"In the present study, electrochemical measurements, especially cathodic potentiodynamic polarization (CPC) and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), have been employed to study the kinetics of ferric reduction on chalcopyrite in aqueous Fe(II)Fe( III)H2SO4 solution at 90 °C and 110 °C. Results from the calculation of speciation in the above solution reveal that, at both 90 °C and 110 °C, the real Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio is much lower than the nominal ratio, which leads to smaller VALUES (for the reversible potential of the ferric/ferrous couple. Exchange current densities of the ferric/ferrous couple were obtained and are on the order of 106 10 5 A/cm2 a t 9 0 °C and 1 07 10 6 A/cm2 at 110 °C, respectively. The Tafel slopes from the CPP method are higher than those from the CPC method at both 90 °C and 110 °C. The transfer coefficients were about 0.360.59 at 90 °C and 0.370.65 at 110 °C. Based on the exchange current densities obtained, the rate constant kc was calculated. It was found that kc at 90 °C was slightly larger than at 110 °C, especially for the results obtained by the CPC method. The average rate constants are 862.17 cm/s for CPC and 65.30 cm/s for CPP at 90 °C, and 477.69 cm/s for CPC and 63.53 cm/s for CPP at 110 °C for nominal Fe3+/Fe2+ ratios ranging from 1:1 to 1000:1. INTRODUCTIONChalcopyrite is one of the most abundant copper-bearing minerals, accounting for approximately 70% of the world’s known copper reserves (Wang, 2005). Most of the currently proposed leaching processes are based on sulfuric acid with ferric ions and/or dissolved oxygen as oxidants. Some of these processes have been piloted in attempts to implement these technologies on an industrial scale, such as Activox (U.S. 5,232,491, 1993), Nenatech (U.S. 5,993,635, 1999), Dynatec (U.S. 5,730,776, 1998), AAC/UBC (U.S. 6,503,293, 2003), Total Pressure Oxidation (U.S. 5,698,170, 1997), CESL (U.S. 5,874,055, 1999) and Galvanox (U.S. 7,846,233, 2010).To date, much effort has been devoted to understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of the oxidative processes (Biegler & Horne, 1985; Córdoba, Muñoz, Blázquez, González, & Ballester, 2008, 2009; Ghahremaninezhad, Asselin, & Dixon, 2010; Hirato, Majima, & Awakura, 1987; Hiroyoshi, Kuroiwa, Miki, Tsunekawa, & Hirajima, 2004; Warren, Wadsworth, & El-raghy, 1982) or the cathode reduction reactions of chalcopyrite itself (Arce & González, 2002; Biegler & Swift, 1976; Biegler, 1977; Nava, González, Leinen, & Ramos-Barrado, 2008), by chemical or electrochemical methods. However, as the most important cathodic processes in chalcopyrite leaching systems, the cathodic reductions of ferric ions or dissolved oxygen are worth measuring due to their effects on the overall leaching rate, as predicted by mixed potential theory."

Gravity gold recovery has been practiced for thousands of years, making it one of the oldest forms of mineral processing. Gold is 19 times heavier than water although the barren rock is generally only 2.7 times heavier. Any potential gold ore needs to be characterised to assess its amenability to a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) process based on well planned and executed test work. Scale up considerations need to be considered in designing a gravity circuit. The economic impact of a gravity circuit should be justified based on the installed cost and likely benefits. Maximising gravity gold recovery results in a faster cash flow, lower operating cost per ounce and higher overall gold recoveries compared to the several weeks required to recover gold adsorbed onto carbon. The advent of centrifugal concentrators such as the Knelson and Falcon, coupled with intensive leaching of concentrates (ILR), has revolutionised gravity gold circuit designs. Considerations associated with the sizing of the centrifugal machines and the percentage of the circulating load (bleed) that should be processed is discussed in this paper. The trends with gravity circuit layout, engineering, as well as optimum dumping cycles, are important areas which require close consideration. Key aspects of these are presented in this paper. There are a number of circuit configurations to be considered, including the integration of different gravity concentrators. Other gravity process design considerations such as fewer modules, the effect of equipment size and enhancement of process efficiency using preconcentration, together with factors that affect OPEX and CAPEX are addressed. Practical considerations of maintenance, security from theft, minimisation of risk and water balance considerations are discussed using different equipment and circuit configurations. The trend towards using gravity recovery in flotation plants is also reviewed. A number of examples are cited and good design aspects highlighted.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents short-range projections of domestic liquid hydrocarbon production through 1980. Appraisal of future crude oil production was made by evaluating the relationship between primary and enhanced oil recovery and the total crude oil producing trends in each of the oil-producing areas of the United States. Future natural gas liquid production was generally estimated by projecting historical production. Estimates of production were prepared for each of the oil producing areas and summarized for the Petroleum Administration for Defense (PAD) districts and total United States. From 1975 to 1980, crude oil production for the conterminous United States is expected to decline from 7.8 to 6.4 million barrels of oil per day (BOPD), and it is expected to increase from 8.0 to 8.2 million BOPD for the total United States. However, these estimates do not include additional production expected from the Elk Hills field in California and the Yates field in Texas. If included, 1980 production for the conterminous United States would be 6.7 million BOPD and 8.4 million BOPD for the total United States.

Electrolytic production of metallic neodymium is carried out in fused fluoride salts containing neodymium oxide. Two major challenges pertaining to neodymium production are (a) low oxide solubility and (b) possible fluorine gas evolution. A novel iron-based reactive anode is proposed and tested to overcome fluorine gas evolution during electrolysis of neodymium oxide in molten fluoride salts.

In order to determine the optimal process parameters of agitation leaching and provide industrial process design parameters, experiments were carried out on leaching behaviors of copper oxide ore with high mud content. Condition tests show that the main factors affect the leaching efficiency as follows: Temperature, Initial acid concentration, leaching time and particle size. As the temperature increases, the copper leaching rate was increased. At 60 ?, the initial acid concentration 80g / L, leaching time 2h, liquid-solid ratio 2:1 and grinding fineness65%-0.074mm, the optimal copper extraction was 83.15%, the acid consumption was 187.91kg / t. ore. This paper documents a process of data analytics and machine learning applied to coalmine roof convergence data. It follows a publication documenting the formation of the database. For each set of analyses Python scripts were utilised to extract data from an SQL database, with subsequent analyses also executed in Python, utilising open-source tools such as scikit-learn. Preliminary analyses with classic machine learning algorithms included multiple logistic regression, K-nearest neighbours, decision tree, random forest, support vector machine, kernel support vector machine, artificial neural network (ANN), naïve Bayes and multiple linear regression. Results indicated that relationships were complex and non-linear, with the artificial neural network most suitable. An ANN model was then refined through a standard process of hyperparameter optimisation and data augmentation to arrive at a final model. Due to the black box nature of the ANN further insight into how the parameters interacted was sought and found with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP values). SHAP values utilise Game Theory, where each input parameter or feature is a ‘player’ while the data set is the ‘team’. The SHAP value is the impact of each player on the target value, essentially establishing the contribution of each input parameter. The results from all analyses are delivered in the paper, together with insights, applications, strengths, and limitations of the methodology.

The metals titanium and zirconium and their alloys occupy individually unique positions in the catalogue of metallic materials available for engineering applications. Because of the uniqueness of their usage in the aerospace industry, in the case of titanium, and in the nuclear industry, in the case of zirconium, the except- ional resistance of both the metals to the majority of corrosive media is often overlooked. The cost factor in the application of these more exotic metals has, in the past, been a major considerat- ion in the rejection of titanium and zirconium as constructional materials in areas of usage where their superior corrosion resistance strongly favoured them over more conventional metals and alloys. The cost differential, vis-a-vis austenitic stainless steels, for example, is not a trifling matter, being of the order of 6 : 1, when compared on a weight basis. However, if one considers the cost, for, say, sheet product on an area basis, the ratio is redgced to approximately 3.4:1. If one also takes into account the enhanced performance of the more expensive material and the sub- sequent increase in service life and decrease in plant down-time, the economics of the usage of materials such as titanium becomes much more attractive and, indeed, highly competitive,

What is experience worth? Representatives from the Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Societies discussed the question as part of the 1970 Annual AIME Meeting held in Denver, Colo. the week of February 15. Petroleum engineer-consultant, Michel T. Halbouty of Houston, Tex. offered his own clarification of present-day employer-employee relationships in engineering as a whole. "Longevity does not equal experience on the job. Further, when employees are considering salary increases and promotions, job performance is considered all the time; experience two- thirds of the time and length of employment one- half the time." He added, "worth is really what the employee can get for it and experience is essential to survival." Halbouty also noted that salary and responsibility is a function of man's value to his company and is about "as discrediting as grey hair." As far as the engineer is concerned, he reported, the company's ability to pay is, in large measure, not considered. From the company's viewpoint, however, the employee is expected to learn his first year on the job. His second year, he is expected to make his presence felt, Should he require three years to orient himself he might soon be looking for another job. The petroleum engineer pointed out that when the employee wants to know why the salary scale tends to plateau off in later years, most employers react by recognizing that employees "flatten themselves rather than the company flattening them."

In January 2008 Chirano Gold Mines Limited committed to expansion of the Chirano Gold Project from its existing design capacity of 2 Mtpa ROM ore to a new design value of 3.5 Mtpa. In addition to increased throughput, the design had to contend with increasing ore hardness and competency, while at the same time make cost effective use of existing equipment with minimum disruption to existing production. The solution adopted involved some novel approaches including tertiary crushing and operation of the SABC circuit in overflow ball mill mode and parallel elution with a common acid wash column. This paper describes the approach taken to the design of these elements to achieve a cost effective and safe capacity expansion.

If you are contemplating starting a small coal mining operation there is a good possi¬bility that you can not afford it. If you, have already started, you may be on the road to bankruptcy. If you are a small but well established operator you may be trading dollars, or even dissipating your capital, equipment and other assets. A bleak outlook? Yes! Meant to be discouraging? No! Just a reminder that, with todays costs of doing business, high interest rates, rapidly increasing costs and decreasing sales prices, a small businessman/miner had best watch closely or he will be mired in something worse than a soft bottom - namely a cash and credit shortage, and in too many instances In recent times, bankruptcy. We will not dwell on what happens once you are that far gone, though I could cite a good example. But, let us look at what should be done to avoid such a catastrophe.

The Optimum Production Rate (OPR) is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of a mineral deposit. The OPR cam also be expressed as the Optimum Mime Life (OML) in years since the expected mime life is determined by dividing the OPR per year into the estimated ore reserves. Unfortunately, very little time and effort has been directed towards the determination of the OPR. Instead, "rules of thumb" are often applied to select a mime life without due consideration of the economic implications of such a selection. A "justification" for a particular production rate is often based on a pre-conceived arbitrary requirement for a mime life of 5, 10, or 15 years, for example. In this paper it is demonstrated that such arbitrary selections for high-grade/low¬-tonnage mines (such as many underground gold/silver deposits) often lead to sub¬optimal results. In fact, am apparently uneconomic deposit at am arbitrary production rate may be economic at the OPR. Consequently, investment opportunities may be overlooked if one analyzes mime' properties based on arbitrary production rates.

The performance of Knelson Concentrators (KC) used in gravity gold circuits often rely on manufacturers recommendations for selecting operating parameters such as, fluidising water flow rate and cycle time. These parameters are not only dependent on the machine parameters but also on the feed characteristics such as, size distribution of the gold and gangue particles and the composition of its constituent minerals. Particles entering a KC experience a centrifugal acceleration due to the high bowl rotational speeds. The required centripetal force to maintain a circular orbit is provided by the fluid drag force created by inwardly moving fluidising water and the Bagnold?s force arising from the particle/particle collisions. When the fluidising water flow rate is low particles move towards the outer rim of the bowl forming a packed bed within the grooves. On the other hand, if the fluidizing water flowrate is high the bed expands and some particles would move towards the centre of the bowl and gets carried to the tailings stream, thereby reducing the amount of material retained within the grooves of the bowl. Based on a force balance on a particle captured within the KC, a criterion which can be used to predict the amount of material recovered in the bowl has been derived and validated by experimental data. It has been shown that this criterion may be used to demarcate the transition of the bed from a packed-bed state to a fluidised state depending on the fluidizing water flowrate. By identifying the conditions for the optimal expansion of the bed comprising different constituent mineral particles, it is possible to estimate the optimal fluidising water flow rate that would maximise gold recovery while minimising gangue recovery. It was also observed that the accumulation of valuable mineral in the bowl takes place by the displacement of the gangue particles in the bed by the incoming heavy mineral particles. The kinetics of this segregation process was also studied using synthetic mineral mixtures. The experimental data suggests that this process follows first order kinetics and that the build up of heavy mineral reaches a maximum which could be used to identify the optimal cycle time. In this work, the suitability of the above model in optimizing the performance of a KC have been reviewed. Also the necessity and merits of testing an unaltered feed samples in a larger KC as op-posed to the commonly adopted GRG test has been discussed.

"INTRODUCTION The Central District of the Florida phosphate industry is located in southwest Polk and southeast Hillsborough Counties, with the Southern Extension lying in western Hardee, eastern Manatee and northwest De Soto Counties. (Lawver, 1983) Figure 1 shows the major phosphate formations in Florida. Almost all Florida phosphate production has been in the Central district with additional production from a mine in the Northern District. The Central District is comprised of the Bone Valley Deposit, a relatively thin layer of high grade ore which has been the main source of phosphate mining for decades, and the Hawthorn formation, a thick but low grade formation which covers most of peninsular Florida. (Lawver, 1983) Florida phosphate producers use the Crago process where calcium phosphate is floated with anionic, fatty acid type collectors followed by cationic reverse flotation of silica with amine type collectors. The phosphate matrix is put through various size separation techniques to obtain a typical -28 Mesh (< 700 µm) particle size for fine flotation and a -16 mesh (< 1190 µm) to +28 mesh (> 700 µm) particle size for coarse flotation. In some cases this coarse fraction can be sent to shipping as an intermediate product. The +16 mesh (>1190 µm) to – ¾“ (19 mm) fraction is sent to shipping as a final product called pebble. Figure 2 demonstrates a simplified diagram of the mining and processing of calcium phosphate (matrix) through a Central Florida mine. Particle size and mineralogy are important considerations in the Crago process for two main reasons, the mass of the particle and the particle surface area. Both of which are dependent on the coordination of the anionic collector to available Ca2+ sites on the minerals’ surface. The increased surface area, and available Ca2+, of the smaller apatite particles will allow for more fatty acid molecules to coordinate than the larger particles, with a lower availability of Ca2+. So, the larger particle would require more collector to be introduced in the system to sufficiently cover the apatite particles to produce a surface sufficiently hydrophobic to attach to air bubbles allowing flotation to occur. (Guan, 2009) The Bone Valley deposit has very favorable flotation characteristics when compared to other mining ores around the world. The matrix of the Bone Valley is relatively high grade, BPL (Bone Phosphate in Lime) values typically range from 6-18%, BPL recoveries, from such a matrix, can often be achieved above 85+% with fatty acid based collectors dosed below 1 #/ton. As mentioned, the sizing is an important step as there is also high grade apatite in the +16 mesh (1mm) that is screened to a final product grade, 60-65% BPL. The lack of quartz in the larger size fraction has allowed the Central District to produce high quality, low cost phosphate product, called pebble, through effective screening with no further beneficiation. Gold deposits in South Africa are invariably associated with uranium bearing minerals. Although it is low grade uranium by international standards, averaging around 0.3 kg U3O8 per ton of ore, recovery of uranium as a by-product improves the overall economics of gold extraction. Moreover, the current high uranium prices as well as increased demand due to renewed interest in nuclear power provide significant incentives for dedicated uranium production. An understanding of the uranium leaching response to changes in operating conditions is an important first step to-wards optimisation of uranium recoveries. In South African acid leaching plants, uranium dissolutions higher than 90% are difficult to achieve, and the chemical origin of this limit is not clear. To study leaching behaviour, an important consideration is the mineralogical characteristics of the ores. Typically, a diagnostic leaching approach can be followed. In this paper, a mineralogy-leachability explanation is presented to rationalise the difficulty in exceeding 90% dissolution from low grade uranium ores on the basis of a simple diagnostic leaching method. It was found that brannerite was the main reason for the existence of a dissolution limit in Witwatersrand ore and that chemical liberation was more effective to increase end dissolution compared to physical liberation. The findings from these investigations will form guidelines for developing economically viable flow sheets for improved uranium recovery, at least in a South African (Witwatersrand) context.

ABSTRACT It is critical that historical processes and concomitant exposures to specific nickel substances be understood because some diseases linked to inhalation of certain nickel-containing substances have a long latency between first exposure and disease onset, and because nickel substances vary significantly in their toxicological properties. A discussion of the smelting history and related processes at Vale Canada’s (Inco’s) Copper Cliff, Ontario, smelter is integral to the understanding of these processes. The post-1950 processing history, equipment, propensity for aerosol formation, operational procedures, and ventilation controls used by Vale Canada in roasting, smelting, converting, and copper-nickel separation is discussed.

In India, despite its natural abundance, demand for coal exceeds its countrywide supply due to failure to achieve high production targets, especially in opencast mines, which are responsible for 94.98 percent of total raw coal production in the country. Employment of technological solutions, such as surface miners, is key to achieving higher coal production and productivity in an environmentally friendly manner, especially in populated areas adjacent to the mining zone. This technology eliminates blast hole drilling, blasting and primary crushing units, thus reducing related environmental hazards like ground vibration and fly rocks.

OZ Minerals owns and operates the Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator in South Australia, built in 2008 and commissioned in early 2009. The concentrator operates via semi autogenous grinding in a thirty four foot ThyssenKrupp Polysius mill followed by a twenty four foot Polysius ball mill in closed circuit with hydro cyclones, designed for an ore throughput of eight million tonnes per annum. The main aspects of designing the circuit are discussed along with the issues faced in the early stages of operation. A review of the optimization strategy applied to the milling circuit such as cyclone optimization, advanced process control strategy implementation and reline management to improve availability is then discussed highlighting areas of significant process improvement that have seen the plant exceed nameplate throughputs above nine million tonnes per annum.

In describing accounting methods at Lake Shore Mines, it is the intention of the writer to limit the discussion to the principal features of the system used in securing cost figures and other statistics. The subject can be conveniently treated under the following divisions: (1) Time-keeping and Labour Distribution (2) Supplies: Handling and Distribution (3) Method of Assembling Data for Cost Purposes (4) Details of Operating Costs Time-Keeping and Labour Distribution After a new employee has gone through the routine of being &apos;hired on&apos;, he is assigned an employment number corresponding with the group applying to his occupation. This is for identification purposes in the plant and time office. He is also given an individual serial number, the use of which will be refer-red to later. On entering and leaving the plant, each employee passes through the clock room adjoining the time office, where he registers the time in and out on time recorders, on the clock card (Figure 1) bearing his name and number. It is the duty each morning of the time clerk to extend the hours worked by each employee, as indicated by the clock for the previous day, and at the end of the half-month period the total hours are multiplied by the rate and entered in the space provided for total wages at the bottom of the card.

The Adra tunnel near Naramata BC experienced a fire in 2010 that burned timber sets within the tunnel and caused severe spalling of rock from the roof and tunnel walls. The nature of the damage is documented and efforts completed to rehabilitate and open a portion of this tunnel to the public are described. The use of shortcrete and rock bolts is a technically and economically superior support system to timber sets as well as being far more fire resistant.

The project was to develop an area within the existing West County Wastewater Treatment Plant which would enable the construction of a new Raw Wastewater Pump Station (RWPS) with a footprint of approximately 85 feet by 190 feet and a foundation depth of about 82 feet below grade and a new Short- Term Detention Basin (STDB) with a footprint of about 80 feet by 130 feet and a foundation depth that varied from approximately 3 to 24 feet below grade.. The excavation support system had to be designed to withstand both normal and the 100-year flood elevations. A Reinforced Soil-Cement Wall (RSW)was chosen to provide a hydraulic barrier which consisted of a single row of soil-cement elements installed along the perimeter of the area to be excavated. Steel wide flange beams were installed on 4 foot centers to support construction loads and be resistant to the lateral forces of the soil and hydrostatic pressures. The RSW was installed to a maximum depth of 104.5ft using a triple-auger drill rig with mixing paddles with a 2ft key into weathered shale providing a cutoff wall consisting of 53,150 square foot of treated soil. The project was to provide the initial design of the excavation support for the pumping station excavation support system and groundwater cutoff. There was 534 linear foot of soil-cement-bentonite wall installed and 106 - 80 foot long W21 x 121 wide flange beams installed on four foot centers into the alignment of the wall. Each element was drilled down into the weathered shale to obtain groundwater cutoff. Derek R. Guthrie Water Quality Treatment Center Pumping Package is the site for a new pumping station that will service Louisville, Kentucky residents. After unplanned long term exposure into the winter, the effects of freeze thaw cycles were evident.
