In the present study,we used natural fibers malva (Urenalobata, Linn) in 0, 15 and 30 vol.% as reinforcement of epoxy matrix composites to ballistic application. Ballistic efficiency of these composites was assessed by measuring the energy absorbed and residual velocity after impact 9 mm FMJ ammunition projectile, aiming to compare with traditional materials, such as: aramid fabric Kevlar™ used in vests for personal protection. The results showed by visual analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that the main active failure mechanisms in composites were delamination layers and fiber rupture. In test groups can be seen that the absorbed energy and the residual velocity varies with the fiber percentage used. Compared to aramid there is both a gain in weight and cost of the ballistic armor, which makes the fiber malva a promising material applications involving personal protection against 9 mm caliber ammunition.

El presente texto señala la exploración, geología y desarrollo del yacimiento minero Toquepala, ubicado en Tacna. Este constituye un yacimiento porfirítico de cobre-molibdeno diseminado donde la mineralización está subordinada a una chimenea de brecha y a un intrusivo de dacita, ambos genéticamente relacionados a la actividad intrusiva hidrotermal calco-alcalina datada de fines del Cretáceo superior-Terciario inferior. En 1937, se inician los trabajos de prospección y exploración desarrollados en Toquepala, cuando la Compañía Cerro de Pasco ordenó una evaluación geológica, con cartografía regional, perforación diamantina y muestreo. Posteriormente se inicia la segunda etapa con estudios regionales de geología, aerofotografía, ingeniería, excavación de galerías y chimeneas exploratorias y la instalación de una planta piloto de tratamiento de minerales de cobre. Finalmente, desde 1955 a la fecha se ha desarrollado la exploración orientada a mantener las operaciones de producción de minado y expansiones planeadas de la minería.

Although the Sagasca deposit has been known for 76 years, the property was never put into successful operation because of various adverse factors including low market price for copper, legal entanglements, unsuccessful financial arrangements, and an inadequate metallurgical process. Late in 1963, Continental Copper & Steel Industries, Inc., obtained legal control of this property. Since that time there has been a concentrated effort to complete the necessary mine appraisal, process development, and engineering design, and to solve the legal and financial problems to bring this property into production.

Introduction The US has the largest total (364 Gt, or 401 billion st) and recoverable (182 Gt, or 201 billion st) coal reserves in the world (Steam/Its Generation and Use, 1978). However, progressive coal use in this country has been hampered by environmental constraints, such as restrictions on sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate emissions. Since the promulgation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), it has become apparent that all US coals will require sulfur removal to comply with the new sulfur dioxide emission levels. If more stringent emission standards are imposed, through pending acid rain legislation or amendments to the Clean Air Act, it is likely that the coal industry, and the industrial and utility sectors will look increasingly toward the development of new and advanced coal cleaning technologies to continue and promote the use of coal. Table 1 summarizes the EPA NSPS for sulfur dioxide emissions. Fortunately, the basis for determining sulfur dioxide removal is the Btu and total sulfur content of the run-of-mine coal. Thus, credit is given for any sulfur removed before combustion, e.g., through physical coal cleaning. Unfortunately, physical coal cleaning alone may be unable to produce a compliance coal with respect to the EPA NSPS. Therefore, all industrial and utility coal-fired boilers will require post combustion gas cleanup, e.g., flue gas desulfurization (FGD), to comply with the new regulations. Of these, chemical coal cleaning offers the advantages of providing (1) high quality fuel for combustion (low sulfur and ash, high Btu, and attenuated product variability); (2) a solid fuel product for use in retrofitted gas and oil boilers; and (3) a solid fuel product with multiple end uses, e.g., internal combustion engines, carbon electrodes, coke, or chemical feedstock. Gravimelt process In the Gravimelt process, 1.4 mm x 0 (14 mesh x 0), physically beneficiated coal of about 5% moisture is fed into a 3401 to 3901 C (644 ° to 734 ° F) molten bath of sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Organic and pyritic sulfur and most of the mineral matter in coal react with and are dissolved in a molten mixture of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. The reacted coal sulfur is converted to alkali sulfides and polysulfides, whereas the mineral matter is apparently converted to alkali-aluminum silicates and other byproducts that are water and acid soluble. Coal residence time is 60 to 240 minutes. The sodium hydroxide to potassium hydroxide ratio is about 9:1. The total hydroxide-to-coal ratio is no less than 10:1. The specific gravity of the caustic melt is about 1.8 g/cm3 . Thus, coal is buoyant in the bath, and insoluble mineral matter with density greater than 1.8 g/cm3 would sink. Reacted coal is first water-washed with an equal weight volume of water in a countercurrent mode of operation. The coal is filtered and the filtrate sent for regeneration. The coal is then acid-washed in 10% sulfuric acid. The acid-water/coal mixture is filtered to recover the final coal product, and the filtrate treated with lime to precipitate dissolved mineral matter. The precipitate is filtered from the mixture and discarded. The water is recycled to the plant. Filtrate from water-washing is treated to remove sodium sulfide. The sodium sulfide is chemically treated to produce hydrogen sulfide, calcium car¬bonate, sodium hydroxide, and other products. The hydrogen sulfide is treated to produce sulfuric acid for the acid-washing step. The calcium carbonate is treated further or discarded, and the sodium hydroxide is concentrated by evaporation and recycled to the reactor. The Gravimelt process is currently at the bench-scale stage of development. A 0.9-kg (2-lb) continuous reactor is in operation with a continuous water- and acid-washing section adjacent. The regeneration section is not developed to a meaningful extent, although key reactions have been tested in the laboratory. Process conditions, product recovery efficiencies, etc., however, have not been determined adequately and continuous regeneration operation has not been attempted. Work is now in progress to develop each section to a continuous bench-scale operation in processing coal at 9.1 kg/h (20 lb per hr). Microwave process The carbon and hydrogen in coal are relatively transparent to microwave radiation. However, water, caustic, pyrite, and other mineral matter components are strong conductors of microwave radiation energy at the proper frequency. "This paper proposes a new direction to implement an underground mine communication system. It presents actual underground communication systems and discusses their technological limits. A new system based on a wireless local area network (WLAN), together with its main systems characteristics, is then proposed. This paper also presents an experimental protocol for radio frequency propagation measurements. Finally, the paper describes the projected implementation of a WLAN in an experimental mine. IntroductionDuring the last decade, a number of Canadian mining companies have invested in modern communications systems in order to automate processes and reduce operational costs. Safety of miners is also a concern, regulated by health and safety regimes.Underground communication systems rely mainly on analog technology (especially the leaky feeder). Digital upgrades have been made to modernize this technology using a coaxial or fibre optic cable to transmit voice, documents, commands, controls, and video. Therefore, all wired equipment can benefit from an increase in efficiency from the digital technology.However, when it comes to mobile equipment, the only medium was, and is, still radio waves. With the advent of the wireless local area network (WLAN) standard, one can use a technology similar to that of the cellular phone to connect transparently different equipment. WLAN enables the transmission at rates higher than 2 M bits of voice, documents, commands, controls, identification, and of course, digital video. This technology was developed with inbuilding use in mind. Now, one can try to adapt it to underground mines."

It will be apparent at once that this is essentially the well-known electrochemical series (Table li). The metals at the bottom of the list exhibit great stability and are attacked only by the most violent of chemical reagents. Higher on the list, the metals become more reactive until, at the head of the list, the metals lithium and calcium are unstable in moist air.The reactive metals to be considered lie above manganese. In this group will be found familiar and abundant metals such as aluminium and magnesium, the unfamiliar yet abundant metal titanium, the rare and mysterious metal beryllium, and others of greater or less interest.While these metals exhibit properties as unlike as those of uranium and magnesium, they have in common a specialized and difficult extractive metallurgy. They form compounds of great stability, and their reduction is to varying degrees difficult. There are almost ten billion tons of vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite in Panzhihua-Xichang area. However, iron ores in Hongge, which has the most abundant reserves in the four mine areas in Panzhihua, have not been utilized sufficiently so far. The reason behind this is the relatively high Cr2O3 in the ores (0.49 %~0.82 %), that due to its high melting temperature will negatively influence the blast furnace reduction and slagging process. Therefore, in the blast furnace process, Cr is hope to be reduced into molten iron, which can reduce slag viscosity problems. Slag iron reduction experiments were conducted to quantify the Cr reduction. Experimental results shows that with the increase of TiO2, the content of Cr in the hot metal is decreased when balanced. And during the initial stage of the reduction reaction, the reaction kinetic model is a first-order reaction.

Approximately since 1925, the phenomena of grinding and classification of minerals with screens have been studied. In the U.S. iron ore mining operations located in the so-called “Mesabi Iron range,” magnetite processing plants have made progress in the application of high-frequency screens that have allowed them to process low-grade Taconite ores and successfully achieve the economic benefit of these minerals. In the particular case of magnetite minerals disseminated in the siliceous matrix, the main objective is to reduce the generation of particles called “middlings” with high silica contents. Commonly the primary challenge of the metallurgical task is to achieve high recoveries and iron concentrates with low impurities. To achieve this, several studies and industrial applications have shown success in this regard and not only in iron ores, but also in other minerals around the world. The study described in this paper attempts to describe some key aspects that helped develop an effective solution and list the benefits associated with this modern process design by using industry-proven technologies for minerals in Chile that have similar characteristics to the minerals of the iron belt in the United States.

O foco deste estudo é avaliar a capacidade de dissolução das partículas de cal a uma temperatura próxima da fase inicial de sopro do processo BOF. Os testes foram realizados em um forno elétrico utilizando amostras de Cal com diâmetros de 6 mm e 9 mm, 80% e 100% calcinadas em diferentes basicidades de escoria. Os resultados mostram que com o menor nível de calcinação a dissolução foi mais rápida. Podendo ser atribuído a algumas diferenças na porosidade da cal ou um efeito de formação de espuma observado durante os testes devido à evolução do CO2 da calcinação restante. O aumento na basicidade da escória resultou na redução da taxa de dissolução que pode ser atribuída a uma precipitação de fase sólida mais densa na interface das partículas aumentando a viscosidade da escória e reduzindo a porosidade da partícula. A partir de um modelo de regressão linear o nível de calcinação mostrou maior efeito sobre o coeficiente cinético do processo de dissolução seguido do tamanho de partícula. O efeito mais fraco foi a basicidade da escória. Este resultado sugere que a área de contato cal escória parece ser mais significativa do que a viscosidade no processo de dissolução de cal nos presentes experimentos.

A central aim of rehabilitation is to ensure that disturbed land is returned to a post-mine condition that is safe, stable and self-sustaining. This paper describes initial results from a grazing trial at the New Acland open-cut coal mine in southern Queensland (-27.27 lat, 151.72 long) that aims to assess the sustainability and viability of cattle production from rehabilitated mined land compared to production from surrounding unmined lands (Newsome 2014). The grazing trial was established in 2013 by the Acland Pastoral Company, a subsidiary of New Hope Coal, on lands previously used for dairying, beef and crops before open cut coal mining of the Walloon coal measures began in 2002. The area has a mean annual rainfall of 640 mm. This paper describes the design of a wellfield to provide a water supply for a new mine in southern Africa. A hydrogeological investigation was conducted that included the drilling and test pumping of eight wells located within a highly jointed pyroxenite aquifer. The wellfield was designed using a simple probabilistic analysis. This approach allowed the variability of the aquifer parameters to be taken into account. A risk assessment analysis was then carried out to evaluate the level of assurance that a reliable water supply could be provided by the wellfield. The analysis was also used to assess the effects of supplementing the water supply by pumping from nearby flooded workings.

"INTRODUCTION The iron—ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the Marquette in Michigan, Menominee and Gogebic in Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Cuyuna, Mesabi, and Vermilion in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. Accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year but closely approximate each other over a period of years.This information circular supplements, continues, and combines the data in Information Circular 7321,2/ including figures of 1944 and 1945.During the 6—year period 1940 to 1945, inclusive, 481,485,475 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district. 4/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 93,787,648 tons, or 19,5 percent of the total, and employed annually an average of approximately 14,300 men; Minnesota shipped 387,697,827 tons, or 80,5 percent, and employed annually an average of approximately 9,300 men. The tons produced per man employed is much greater in Minnesota than in Michigan and Wisconsin, owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota."

"Over the last ten years, several developments have been undertaken to conceive a machine capable of carrying out simultaneously all the mining tasks in hard rock deposits: cutting, mucking, hauling, ground support and dust control.The main advantages of continuous mining over conventional drill and blast is the elimination of the cyclical nature of the actual methods. Other advantages sought are improved stability of mine openings, higher productivity, lower costs, and a cleaner and safer mining environment. Noranda has con-tributed to these developments in a major way. As a member of HDRK, Noranda participated in the development of two mechanical continuous mining machines; the TM60 and the Wirth. Noranda also undertook a development of its own based on the utilization of electricity to break rock. This technology is called plasma blasting (PBT). The concept of plasma blasting is illustrated in Figure 1.When the operating voltage is reached (18kV), the energy is released through a high current switch (500k A) into a coaxial powercable. It is then delivered to the tip of an electrode inserted into a drill hole which is filled with an electrolyte (water). When the energy reaches the electrolyte, it is instantaneously transformed into a high temperature, high pres-sure plasma that produces a shock wave capable of breaking rock(1).After initial testing of the plasma blasting technology in the lab and in the feld, two experimental platforms were constructed. The first one, a test bench, was erected at the Noranda Technology Centre in Pointe Claire, Quebec.(2)The second one is a rock breaker prototype based on a standard diesel-powered carrier (Fig. 2). Each platform was equipped with a 300 kJ pulsed-power module.In 1993, the rock breaker prototype was used for an extensive series of tests in the field. During that campaign, over 700 oversized boulders were blasted. The results of the tests demonstrated that more durable components for PBT were needed. The test bench was then used to successfully develop and test long-lasting components (probe, switch, cable, connector) that can be adapted to industrial platforms leading to the commercialization of the technology."

IN the use of free bubbles with precise temperature control and continuous pH measurement, the contact angle apparatus differs from all previous equipment. Experimental procedures differ sharply from the captive bubble method1,2 of introducing the gaseous phase in the three-phase system. When freed from the tube and captured by a solid surface, a bubble more closely conforms to the spherical ideal set up by the usual mathematical analysis of surface free energy or surface tensional relationships of the forces involved. The assembled equipment, Fig. 1, departs from the usual contact angle apparatus in providing: 1) water circulation for fixing temperature, 2) instruments to measure and record pH during testing, and 3) a system for producing and using free bubbles. The apparatus allows testing over a broad range of closely controlled conditions, and the use of free bubbles gives contact angles independent of operator manipulation, which was unavoidable in the older captive bubble method. A bubble released below the specimen rises through the liquid and contacts the mineral. If the mineral is gas-avid the bubble adheres, developing a finite contact angle. Reaction cells (1), 2x33/8x5 3/16 in. ID, are of pyrex glass 5 mm thick. To prevent optical distortion, the sides are optical flats and are planed parallel to within five wave lengths of light over the entire surface. Special cement is required to withstand chemical attack and thermal shock. The cell is placed in a thermal jacket (2) made of welded aluminum. A water seal for the optical ports is made by using O-rings tightened against the flats of the cell by fine-threaded and adjustable ports, Fig. 2. In-flow water is discharged downward from a manifold located near the bottom of the cell jacket. Water overflows the weirs at each end of the cell jacket, discharging from both sides to a collecting manifold (24). A hose (26) leads the overflow water to the thermal-conditioner well (4), which is recessed to accommodate a reaction cell and two beakers (150 ml). Both the thermal jacket and the thermal-conditioner well are insulated to minimize the effects of temperature differentials. Water, discharging from the thermal-conditioner well, returns to a thermostat bath and pump (3), from which it is pumped to the thermal jacket. The thermostat bath permits temperatures to be adjusted from 1" or 2°C to 80°C and will maintain the selected temperature within 0.2ºC. The investigation focuses on leaching of copper (2 wt%), cobalt (0.5 wt%) and iron (2.4 wt%) from complex tailings material from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The highest recovery of copper and cobalt into the leach solution were 78 and 10%, respectively, under direct leaching with sulphuric acid. Higher recoveries (90% for copper and 96% for cobalt) were attained when the material was pre-reduced with coal for 1.5 h in the temperature range of 700–950 °C. The increased recoveries were due to metallisation of all the copper and cobalt which is in the silicate matrix. The effects of pre-reduction temperature and sample to carbon weight ratios were analysed and found to be important in; (i) achieving high recoveries of copper and cobalt and (ii) decreasing the amount of iron in the leach solution. The samples were characterised by atomic absorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques.

Our program has been dictated by the necessity of broadening our markets through converting potash chemicals to fertilizers more in demand than potassium chloride. To this end, we have undertaken studies on methods of preparing potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate by rather simple conversion. When mixtures of sodium and magnesium sulphates are reacted with potassium chloride, the ratio of sodium to magnesium is quite pertinent. A range of ratios has been selected and the conversions of potassium chloride to sulphate have been assessed by cyclic operations. Results from experimental procedures for producing potassium nitrate are also avail-able. The influence on recovery for systems including organic solvents is assessed for a variety of situations.

O consumo do carvão mineral no mundo se encontra em aumento nos últimos anos, devido ao aumento dos preços dos combustíveis fósseis. No caso do Brasil, o carvão mineral é de baixa qualidade contendo, por exemplo, elevado teor de cinzas. Desta forma, o beneficiamento do carvão mineral gera uma quantidade grande de rejeito (RJ) que em contato com a água da chuva é responsável pela conhecida formação da drenagem acido. Alguns trabalhos vêm sendo propostos para contornar este inconveniente, alguns voltados para o aproveitamento do enxofre contido, outros pensando na geração de um possível condicionador de solos ou ainda na obtenção de absorventes para tratamento de efluentes. Dentro deste contexto, o presente trabalho estuda uma possível utilização do rejeito de carvão mineral do sul de Brasil através da extração de Ácido Húmico (AH) e a subsequente utilização deste no tratamento de efluentes. O trabalho reporta o uso da eletrooxidação do RJ seguido da caracterização do AH obtido por analise elementar e espectroscopia de 13C RMN CP/MAS. A etapa de aplicação do AH foi conduzida através de uma avaliação sobre a remoção de Pb+2 contido em uma solução sintética. A extração do AH consumiu cerca dos 12% da massa do RJ e a sua caracterização indicou um componente aromático de 54%, seguido pelos grupos alifáticos (34%). A proporção de grupos contendo oxigênio foi relativamente da ordem de 6% de O-alquilo, 3% de COO- e 3% de C=O.

"Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a recognized tool to evaluate various processing routes for metal production. Declining ore grades and higher specific energy requirements for primary metal production put greater emphasis on recycling. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of steel and aluminium metal production were quantified with recycling scenarios using material recovery facility (MRF) data from the database of SimaPro LCA software. The GHG footprint of the MRF is relatively minor compared with that of associated transport during collection (i.e. 10 times more than MRF) of curbside recyclable material. Additionally, if the bulk recyclable material is sent overseas (i.e. Australia to China) from the MRF for further processing, the GHG footprint of shipping can significantly be larger compared with the sum of the collection and MRF (assuming electricity is from same source). Thus opportunities exist for reducing GHG emissions from secondary metal production if it is processed close to the MRF.IntroductionIt is a challenge to recycle metals significantly, although theoretically infinite recycling is possible due to their elemental nature. Leaks from the metal stocks in society occur through corrosion, wear and dispersive uses, or via land filling or similar activities that return metals to the earth. In order to provide a technically sound and transparent assessment of metal recycling, a methodology such as life cycle assessment (LCA) should be used. By taking a life cycle perspective, the beneficial recycling properties of metals can be evaluated in a manner that enables appropriate comparisons with other materials or product systems that do not have recycling loops. In practice, mixtures of primary and secondary metals are often used in new products, and also at the end-of-life various processing methods are used for recycling.The difficulty of introducing recycling into LCA is to set the right boundaries for the different flows ending in different product systems. It is a question of which observed material flow belongs to the first product system and which one to the second or subsequent systems. Recycling can be part of any product LCA. However, it is often a complex issue which requires specific considerations. As pointed out by Yellishetty et al. and Birat et al. [l, 2], LCA practitioners are left with much freedom in allocation of environmental burdens to account for recycling, thus making subjective judgments on recycling and allocation of credits to recycling. This often makes it difficult to compare the results of LCA studies conducted by two different practitioners even on the same processes. As LCA is often used to define policy in government, business and society circles, it should be based on a sound, objective and unbiased description of recycling."

The results of tests on oxidized lead ores from two properties are reported in this paper. The investigation was on a small laboratory scale only; no pilot-plant tests were made. One sample, from the Magajupa Mining Co., near Duenweg, No., contained coarsely crystalline and disseminated galena and cerussite, so both tabling and flotation were considered in the beneficiation. By this treatment of an ore containing 11.5 percent lead, a recovery of 79.5 percent of the lead was made in a concentrate containing 73.3 percent lead.
