"Molybdenum, in the form of molybdenite, is a common byproduct of many copper mining and concentrating operations. While the recovery of most copper sulfide minerals is principally liberation controlled, the recovery of molybdenite is much more complex, with fully liberated particles commonly lost to tailings.A geometallurgical investigation was undertaken of molybdenite from the Bingham Canyon deposit with the aim of determining what effects, if any, mineralogy and the mineralogical attributes of morphology, angularity, liberation and size have on molybdenite recovery in the processing circuit. A set of samples was collected from the ores and products of Rio Tinto Kennecott’s Copperton Concentrator. The samples were analyzed by normal polarized reflected light microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy using a Mineral Liberation Analyzer, revealing the presence of two distinct types of molybdenite, which are the two polytypes: hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R). The 2H polytype occurs as textbook-shaped particles in quartz-molybdenite veins located in the core of the deposit, while the 3R polytype occurs as disseminated, ball-shaped particles with a dull or frosted appearance along the margins of the mineralized intrusive body or central core. Each polytype exhibited metallurgical properties consistent with those reported in the literature. The 2H polytype is easily ground, kinetically “faster” floating and displays surface attributes that are amenable to higher rates of recovery. This commonly results in the production of a high-quality molybdenum concentrate under normal operating conditions at most copper concentration operations. The 3R polytype is difficult to grind, kinetically “slower” floating and displays surface attributes that are less amenable to recovery. Therefore, in deposits with higher concentrations of the 3R polytype, modifications to operating parameters may be necessary to improve the recovery of molybdenite.A preliminary investigation into the metal budget of porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits indicated a possible positive correlation between total economic metal budget and polytype content. Higher concentrations of the 3R polytype appear to be more prevalent in gold-enriched porphyries than in molybdenum-enriched porphyries. This may help explain why it is easier to obtain higher rates of recovery in molybdenum ± tungsten-rich deposits, which contain little to none of the 3R polytype. There is a potential for the metal budget of a porphyry deposit to be used as an indication of the molybdenite polytype present as well as its impact on the economics, in terms of exploration, and the processing circuit, in terms of plant design."

Long Operations is located on the eastern slope of the Kambalda Dome in Western Australia. Kambalda hosts nickel deposits that are modelled to have formed from an exsolving sulfide melt from a parental komatiite melt. The nickel deposit model predicts a stratigraphical relationship where massive Fe-Ni-Cu-sulfides are deposited in troughs at the base of komatiite channels. The basal contact of the sulfides is generally tholeiitic basalt. The Kambalda geological sequence form a dome structure with a granodioritic core and have undergone tectonic and metamorphic overprinting, resulting in the formation of upper greenschist to lower amphibolite-facies units.On the basalt-ultramafic contact, within the Long Operations, there are two separate channels hosting seven different orebodies. The Moran orebody is the most undisturbed orebody at Long Operations, with many primary magmatic textures preserved, making it ideal for studies to improve the existing nickel sulfide formation model. Detailed exploration and production infill drilling and systematic sampling indicates consistent nickel tenor variations over the entire Moran orebody. This was also observed in other deposits in Western Australia and was explained as metamorphic variations. Similar variations are observed with some trace elements that cannot be explained by metamorphic overprint but with gravitational segregation in the liquid sulfide. Other more complex trace element patterns (eg Cr) require additional explanations and are partly originated from incorporation of underlain basalt and sediment and partly from gravitational segregation.From a mining perspective, the Moran orebody can be used as an example of modern high-speed mining, but at the same time preserving samples for the future and allowing knowledge from the geological context and geochemical signatures to improve future exploration.CITATION:Staude, S, Marriott, S, Griffith, J, Laming, C, Hammond, D, Stanfield, S and Sheppard, S, 2014. The generalized rail haulage simulator described in this paper is an outgrowth of the need to expand a previously developed single level simulator to permit analysis of production problems where intermediate car storage is used. Many of the ideas of the former single level simulator, which is an integral part of an Underground Generalized Materials Handling Simulator (UGMHS), have been used in model development. In addition, experience gained in applying the earlier model to a variety of operating conditions has been heavily relied on. The generalized rail haulage simulation model can operate as an independent system and, as such, can be used to analyze rail haulage systems using production distributions as data input. In addition, this model is designed to replace the present rail haulage sub-assembly in the UGMHS model and the linking procedure has been integrated into the model. The flow of coal from production sections in UGMHS, for example, fill the mine cars and a condition of no empty cars at a loading station will shut down in by production systems.

A comprehensive field program was implemented to evaluate the internal structure and hydrology of two full-scale waste rock piles. The excavation of waste rock dumps for in-pit disposal at the two mine sites provided an opportunity to characterise the in situ properties of the dumps given contrasting geologic and climatic settings. The internal structure and materials within the dumps were observed and sampled as the waste rock piles were being excavated and placed in the open pits for permanent closure. The field program was designed to fully characterise the structure and material properties of the waste rock. The alteration of the material by physical and chemical weathering was also observed. Samples were analysed for paste pH, water content, grain size distribution and geochemistry. In situ density and matric suction were also measured. Soil water characteristic curves and saturated hydraulic conductivity were measured for representative materials. These properties were used to predict seepage pathways through the waste rock and the resulting outflow geochemistry using the finite element model SEEP/W. The materials in the dump at Site 1 were predominantly fine-grained in texture and highly weathered. The presence of dipping beds with alternating coarse and fine materials was evident throughout the profile of the dump. The structure of the waste rock appears to have an impact on the hydrologic pathways within the waste rock pile. The material in the dump at Site 2 was found to be competent and resistant to particle size breakdown. The particles range in size from clay size to large boulders with the median particle size being approximately 125 mm in diameter. The coarse-grained texture of the waste rock resulted in a loosely packed arrangement of coarse particles with little matrix material infilling the pore spaces between the coarse-grained particles. Seepage modelling for Site 1 was completed to predict seepage paths based on observed structure and hydraulic properties measured in the laboratory. The modelling showed that materials with a fine grain size distribution become the dominant pathways for flow through the waste rock pile. The modelling also showed that layers with high silt and sand contents are subject to the highest flow rates. Finer grained clay rich layers have a low hydraulic conductivity and do not convey large volumes of water. Alternately, coarse gravel and cobble materials are unsaturated under values of matric suction that approach the residual water content of the material and do not transmit liquid water. The seepage modelling together with the results of the geochemical analysis show that the dominant particle size that receives the most fluid flow and flushing ranges from fine sand to silt, corresponding to materials with air entry values ranging between 5 kPa to 50 kPa.

THE present lull in engineering activities presents an advantageous moment for inquiring into the position now occupied by geophysics in its various fields of application. The recent over-expansion in all lines of work resulted in an uncritical employment of these methods of exploration which was bound to have its harmful reaction. The pendulum has now swung back, producing a decidedly hypercritical attitude toward the new science that had been recently welcomed so joyfully as the panacea for prospecting troubles. The severe retrenchment in exploration has forced upon us a period of waiting and, it is to be hoped, of profitable contemplation. This can well be employed in trying to pass a reasoned judgment on what position geophysics should occupy in the new geological exploration programs that will inevitably ac- company the looked-for industrial recovery.

A necessidade da aplicação dos aços de alta dureza é recorrente nas indústrias de mineração, visto que esses equipamentos são submetidos continuamente a esforços mecânicos. Por isso o objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar uma amostra de aço Hardox 450 HB soldada pela técnica undermatching com a finalidade de se avaliar a sua soldabilidade, dureza e microestrutura, qualificando a sua predisposição para o uso fabril. Realizou-se o ensaio de composição química, o ensaio metalográfico e o de microdureza afim de se comparar com os dados de fabricantes deste aço e avaliando com os parâmetros de soldagem aplicados a sua susceptibilidade à propagação de trincas. Observou-se que a microestrutura revelada é a martensita com conformação de grãos mais refinados entre o metal de base e o metal de adição. Através da análise química percebeu-se que de acordo com o valor do carbono equivalente, este aço possui média soldabilidade.

Arsenic bearing minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13), which may associate with major copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S) and bomite (Cu2FeS4), usually report to the copper concentrate in conventional flotation due to their similar flotation properties. Arsenic in a copper concentrate causes environmental problems and also problems in the subsequent pyrometallurgical process. Voltammetric studies were carried out to investigate the oxidation characteristics of enargite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bomite. Contact angle measurements and micro-flotation tests were conducted to examine the flotation characteristics of enargite and chalcopyrite under controlled pulp potentials. Selective flotation of enargite from chalcopyrite under varied pulp potentials was conducted to investigate the feasibility of arsenic removal from a copper concentrate. The test results indicate that the non-arsenic bearing copper minerals ( chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite) were easier to oxidise than arsenic bearing minerals ( enargite and tennantite) in an alkaline solution. Enargite floated well at a potential as high as +0.45 V vs. SCE while chalcopyrite was completely depressed at a potential higher than +0.43 V vs. SCE. Selective flotation revealed that enargite can be successfully removed from chalcopyrite through controlling the pulp potential at +0.30 ~ +0.50 V vs. SCE.

The market trend of advanced high strength steel (AHSS) with demand for higher strength products is increasing continuously. The inline cooling technologies have established as the most powerful metallurgical tool to achieve these demands. However, the cooling capabilities of existing hot strip mills, plate and Steckel mills are often not adequate to generate high cooling rates and the cooling accuracy required for the production of AHSS. Hence there have been many developments for an intensive, highly flexible accurate homogeneous cooling technology. Considering the wide variety of strip and plate geometry, Primetals Technologies have developed Power Cooling Technology for strip and introduced MULPIC®4 Technology for the plate production. In this paper we shall discuss these enhanced technologies that provide the inline cooling requirement with examples from the recently commissioned machines.

A tecnologia da fabricação de aços, nas últimas décadas, apresentou grandes avanços, os quais resultaram em melhorias da qualidade, principalmente no que se refere à remoção de inclusões. As inclusões podem ser responsáveis por prejudicar as propriedades mecânicas por meio da geração de trincas ou fraturas entre outros defeitos. O distribuidor do lingotamento contínuo também pode atuar na remoção destas partículas. A eficácia desta função do distribuidor demanda o conhecimento das características do escoamento do aço líquido de modo que se possa propor modificações na configuração do distribuidor. Esse conhecimento pode ser obtido mediante a utilização de modelos físicos para simular os fenômenos envolvidos. O objetivo deste trabalho é, a partir de um distribuidor com jato aberto, construído em acrílico e em escala 1:1, verificar o percentual de inclusões passantes pelo veio com ou sem a presença de bolhas. O trabalho foi executado com e sem tubo longo, sendo o tubo longo empregado para prevenir o arraste de ar para o interior do modelo. Os resultados foram obtidos por meio do ensaio de remoção de inclusões com o auxílio do ensaio de distribuição de tempos de residência. As variáveis utilizadas neste estudo são: presença bolhas e velocidade de lingotamento.

Pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS) and galena (PbS) generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) when placed in water, with pyrite generating the most amount of H2O2. The order of these minerals for generating H2O2 in water is: pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. In previous research, the methods of generation of H2O2 in the grinding mill were studied. In this study, data from experiments were included by using MODDE 9 software for six parameters composed of water, grinding media, particle size; adding collector to the grinding, and adding depressant and pH. Finally the optimal condition was achieved. According to the results, most of the recovery is related to the particle 75 μ size and when using processed water, adding 100% collector and without depressant and pH 10. The most recovery of lead in the case of the use of fresh water is in the case of 100% collector, without depressant, pH 10 and 150 μ particle size. Maximum recovery in fraction size 45 μ in the case of water process is 100% collector, without depressant and pH 10. The nation is confronted with thousands of acres of abandoned coal lands. In Pennsylvania alone, these lands have been estimated to cost $15 billion to reclaim (Pennsylvania Bulletin, 1985). One way to deal with this problem is to provide a mechanism by which the active mining industry can undertake to remine certain of these abandoned mine areas. Remining is classified as reaffecting previously mined areas in order td extract the remaining coal reserves while improving the environmental quality of these lands through land restogation and abatement of pollutional discharges. However, there currently is a disincentive for operators to plan to extract reserves on these abandoned mine lands which have preexisting pollutional discharges. Therefore, they presently avoid them. This is because of the "potentially unlimited liability of post- mining treatment for any discharges that would remain after mining? (Pennsylvania Bulletin, 1985).

Introduction Air conditioning is a term which has come into common use only during our generation. By definition, it means the positive and accurate control of temperature, humidity, movement, purity, and component constituents of the atmosphere within an enclosure. Claiming such results for Noranda's ventilation system, or for that of any other large mine, at present would be an idle boast. However, we are working toward that end with considerable success. Modern underground ventilation at Noranda dates back about six years. The later development of air conditioning is in its fourth season, but still in the experimental stage. Various ingenious methods have been devised to cool mines which, because of climatic or geological conditions or depth, are excessively warm. A few installations have been made to warm intake air during the winter months where this is necessary. However, the method currently in use at Noranda is unique in that it accomplishes both ends by one process. This method utilizes the freezing and melting of ice to equalize year-round temperatures. Mining Methods While a discussion of mining methods at Noranda is not proposed in this paper, a brief summary may be in order. The Horne mine of Noranda Mines, Limited, has been developed by six shafts, four of which are now active. The most recent, an internal shaft, extends to 6,000 feet below surface, but all of the ore mined to date has come from above the 3,000-foot level. Figure 1 shows a model of principal ore bodies. The area mined is relatively small in plan, considering its vertical extent and the tonnage per vertical foot. Most of the ore lies within an ellipse about 600 by 1,000 feet. While this has certain advantages, the mining of such massive orebodies has presented many problems.

"As there are only limited numbers of bored pile constructed in sandstone and siltstone in Thailand, load transfer and settlement behavior of a pile in these rocks are still not fully understood. Major factors which influence the performance of the pile in the sedimentary rock should be systematically investigated. The objective of this paper is to analyze load distribution and load-settlement behavior of bored pile in sedimentary rock. Interpreted data was obtained from instrumented load testing results of large-diameter bored piles. These piles were drilled in aeolian soil and socketed in sandstone or siltstone, having socketed length varying from 1 to 3 times the pile diameter. Factors that influenced pile settlement behavior, consisting of rock type at the pile base, socket length, at-rest earth pressure and rock conditions, were analyzed. For interpretation of results, analytical solutions were used to estimate load bearing capacity and calculate settlement of each pile. According to test results of mobilized unit skin friction in siltstone, relationship of 0.1 – 0.3 square root of the unconfined compressive strength of rock appears to reasonably capture the measured shaft friction. Note that shaft movement in siltstone layer was not fully mobilized as maximum pile head settlement was still less that 1% of the pile diameter.INTRODUCTIONExtensive research of bored pile construction in soft soil in Thailand and Myanmar (Boonyarak et al., 2016; Aye et al., 2015) has been carried out. However, behavior of bored pile in weak rocks such as sandstone and siltstone is still not fully understood. Unit skin friction and unit end bearing of piles in these weak rock were reported by Horvath et al. (1983) and Pells and Turner (1980), respectively. Further research is still required to minimize variation in data presented in their study.This paper presents interpretation of load testing results of instrumented piles. These piles were excavated in aeolian deposit in the Northeast Thailand. Some piles were socketed in sandstone or siltstone. Analysis results of load-settlement, shaft shortening, pile settlement estimation, factor for calculating shaft friction and end bearing are reported. Discussion and explanation of pile behavior in sandstone and siltstone is provided.BRIEF INFORMATION OF THE PROJECTProject locationsThe construction sites are located in Khon Kaen and Nakhorn Ratchasima Provinces in the Northeast Thailand. Bored piles in this project were designed for supporting elevated structures for railways, overpasses and U-turn bridges for vehicles. IN these days of the spectacular in research and technological accomplishment, it is easy and natural to overlook some of the applications to everyday life of recent developments of a more pedestrian kind, or to fail to realize that sometimes two or three of the latter may be combined to serve a novel purpose in fields other than those in which they grew. The present remarks are to point out three such developments which might be combined to apply to an everyday function of the A.I.M.E. as an organization. By its Constitution, the A.I.M.E. is organized "to promote the arts and sciences connected with . . . minerals and metals, and the welfare of those employed in these industries . . .; to hold meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate . . . among its members the information thus obtained . . .; and to . . . maintain . . . a library." By these words of Article I the profession of mining and metallurgy is recognized to involve many arts and sciences, of which the art and science of exchanging information is a leading one. As to methods of preparing or securing papers, the Constitution is silent.

"The testing of explosives for permissibility for use in coal mines was begun by the technologic branch of the United States Geologic Survey in February, 1909, and continued by the United States Bureau of Mines from July, 1910; this testing has been carried on from year to year as the explosives were submitted by manufacturers. As a result of these many years of testing for permissibility a large amount of data has accumulated regarding the characteristics of permissible explosives. The manufacturer expects a sample of explosive submitted for test to meet the requirements for permissibility, otherwise the sample would not be submitted. However, in spite of the careful regulation and preparation of the formulas a certain percentage of explosives fails to pass the gallery tests. It is therefore interesting to note the proportion of failures at the gallery for a given composition of explosive. The fact should be emphasized that this discussion deals with all explosives submitted for test, both those which passed the tests and those which failed to pass. Explosives that failed to pass the tests were never designated as permissible explosives and have never appeared on any list of explosives permissible for use in coal mines.The Bureau of Mines classifies permissible explosives in two ways, according to the quantity of poisonous gases produced and according to the characteristic ingredient of the explosive.4 In this paper only two types of the latter classification are considered, as follows:"

"The U.S. Bureau of Mines established on August 15, 1983, The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust (Dust Center) within the Mining and Mineral Resource Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University, and in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Minnesota. In 1986, Michigan Technological University (MTU) was awarded a grant through the Dust Center. The center's research program has been developed with recognition of the stated objective of the Federal Mine Safety and Health law, which is ""... (to) permit each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of his entire adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis of any other occupation-related diseases..."" The Dust Center's program is designed to foster an accelerated attack through fundamental research on problems confronting the control of respirable dust in mines. The interactions of the universities and the research program components in the characterization of coal seams, respirable dust particles and the workers lungs are depicted in the logo of the Dust Center.The primary goal of the Dust Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling, and the interaction of dust and lungs. The Dust Center's research program explores these concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniques that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The work concentrates on: (1) control of dust generation; (2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways; (3) characterization of dust particles; (4) interaction of dust and lungs; and (5) the relationship of the mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. The fundamental aspects of this work are applicable to the control of respirable dust problems in both hard rock mines and coal mines, and to other dusts such as those generated by diesel equipment. Achieving the Dust Center's goals also involves the training of engineers and scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students through their respective institutions, and technology transfer to industry. The distribution of personnel in the various universities are presented in Table 1. A directory of Dust Center principal investigators is presented in Appendix 1. A summary of degrees granted and mineral sector employment is presented in Table 2. The subjects of theses developed under the various research projects are presented separately in Volume 7. The center research is fully compatible and complementary with the existing and ongoing U.S. Bureau of Mines activities (see Volume 2). Additionally, the expertise and facilities of the NIOSH--Division of Respirable Disease studies are available as a result of the existing relationship between NIOSH and West Virginia University. Figure 1, Respirable Dust Center Projects and Activities, presents the various projects in the five major areas of investigation and the scope of characterized dust samples, the suite of tests, the sampling and dust generation methods, and the size, chemical and mineralogical analysis performed in the center. Table 3 presents a summary distribution of the 95 publications and presentations that have emanated from the center. In addition there are more than thirty presentations made at each annual Dust Center review meeting. The titles, authors and location of presentation for publications supported by the Dust Center are presented in separate publication volumes for 1984 (Volume 3), 1985 (Volume 4), 1986 (Volume 5) and 1987 (Volume 6)."

This review was initially motivated by the author’s own experience in attempting to reconcile run-of mine production tons with the Coal Resource and Reserve estimation of mineable, in-situ tonnages. The primary scientific measurements and observations that are collected during exploration at the beginning of the value chain will have a profound effect on the future of the mining operation. Due diligence must be exercised during the planning of a new mine and during the life of an existing mine. The comments provided by the technical and economic assessment group of Venmyn Deloitte confirmed the need for this critical review. They found the reporting of Coal Resources in South Africa to be inconsistent. This was particularly problematic in the Waterberg Coalfield in Limpopo Province. In this coalfield there are two types of coal deposit present. The first is comprised of the thick intercalated, cyclic coal and shale/mudstone sequences of the Volksrust Formation. This overlies multiple coal seams within the Vryheid Formation, each of which is thick enough to be extracted as an individual raw coal unit. On the other hand, the interbedded coal and shale seams of the Volksrust Formation require beneficiation to separate the coal from the shale. The review examines practices and methods, investigates alternatives, provides checks and balances, and tests these against actual production reconciliations. In conclusion, the best estimates of the mineable, in-situ tonnage will be obtained from the air-dry raw material density. These estimates should be adjusted afterwards to allow for free moisture content. The adjustments are derived from reconciliation data. The greatest contributing factor to the over-estimation of Reserve tonnages is the moisture content of the raw material. This fluctuates significantly under varying conditions in situ, as well as upon exposure to the natural environment. The air-dried density of the raw material includes inherent (structurally bound) moisture within the matrix. It provides credible tonnage estimations of raw material available while also providing an indication of voids within the volume of material being assessed. The calculated solids percentage can be used to adjust the specific gravity, which is determined via the Archimedes principle. This will supply a representative estimate of the material to be mined.
