This paper builds on presentations made at the Conference of Metallurgists (COM) 2015, COM 2017 and Extraction 2018 and associated papers published in the respective conference proceedings. Based on the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” the paper describes how metal mining can be compatible with sustainable development and how sustainability considerations have been applied in the primary copper industry, using several examples of sustainable mining practices from ASARCO LLC operations. Finally, the paper discusses how these considerations might be used in the future by discussing the need for developing a sustainable development strategy and how this strategy can be aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. INTRODUCTION The primary copper industry comprises: mining (also referred to as “extraction”); mineral processing (also referred to as “beneficiation, “milling” or “concentration,”) which includes leaching, solvent extraction (SX), crushing, grinding, froth and flotation operations; and metallurgical processing which includes smelting and converting; refining, which includes fire-refining or anode refining and electro-refining; and electrowinning (EW). There are two routes for producing refined copper: hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical. The hydrometallurgical route comprises mining (open-pit and underground), mineral processing (crushing and grinding — for heap leaching only; leaching and SX) and metallurgical processing (EW). The pyrometallurgical route involves mining, mineral processing (crushing, grinding and froth flotation) and metallurgical processing (smelting, fire refining and electro- refining). The primary copper industry is capital, water, resource and energy intensive with the potential for significant environmental impacts, if the environmental aspects are not properly managed. ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting And Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co-products. Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V (Grupo México) acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills, two leach, SX-EW plants, a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper electrolytic refinery in Texas.

Bench stability is the basis of sustainability in an open pit mining operation. Taking care of the pit walls while maintaining fragmentation results can prove a challenge. In this study, technical proposals have been developed for extra hard rock mass (UCS>175MPa) with presence of unfavorable structural planes in high copper grade zones. The base case shows low compliance of fragmentation results and a significant loss in berm width, with over size boulders causing low primary crushing rates. Paradigms in current drill and blast design were overcome to improve fragmentation results and achieve objectives.

"IntroductionThis paper provides an overview of the coal mining industry in Canada with a description of current circumstances. The Canadian industry is placed in a global context and the future prospects of the industry are described. The export market is very important to the future of Canadian coal production and the essential aspects of the market are explained. Future prospects are very much tied to metallurgical coal exports and some key characteristics of that market are discussed, including major technological changes in the industry. Stability in 1996The Canadian coal industry enjoyed another strong year in 1996 continuing a trend established over the last four years. The strength of the industry is based on a stable domestic industry and a relatively healthy inter- national market. The figures bear out these statements. In 1996 total production reached 75 million tonnes and consumption was 52 million tonnes. The major markets for coal in Canada are electricity generating stations (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia) and the steel industry in southern Ontario. Approximately 11 million tonnes of coal were imported and exports reached a new record of 34.5 million tonnes, mainly from western Canada. Canadian Coal FlowsCanada represents a unique case in the coal world because we both import and export coal (Fig. 1). The reason for this apparent dichotomy is Canada’s geography. Eastern Canadian coal markets are located closer to the eastern United States coal fields and are basically served by them. This is true for both thermal and metallurgical coal. Major imported coal users are the steel industry, electricity generators and other industry including the cement industry in southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, with a little coal imported into Manitoba. Only about 2.2 million tonnes of western Canadian coal move into the east, including both lignite and bituminous coal."

Iron ore concentrate is used as the fresh feed of pelletising plants. The green pellet properties depend on iron concentrate characteristics such as particle size distribution (PSD), specific surface area (Blaine value), iron grade, moisture content and grinding methods. The grinding methods affects particle size distribution and Blaine value. To find out the effects of grinding methods on pelletising process, green pellets were produced with concentrates that were reground by means of HPGR (high pressure grinding rolls) and ball mill. The Blaine values of ground concentrates in both types of milling were approximately 1400, 1600 and 1800 cm2/gr. The results of green pelletising tests on a pilot plant scale showed that at the same Blaine values, drop numbers of green pellets produced by ground concentrate inside HPGR were higher than the green pellets produced by ground concentrate inside a ball mill. Also, reground concentrates by means of HPGR, in comparison with ball mill, caused the production of green pellets, at higher wet and dry compression strengths. As a result, it was found that preparing the pelletising feed by means of HPGR led to more positive effects on the properties of green pellets. "This work was carried out to determine the influence of rock properties and drilling machine parameters on the penetration rate at the SJ pit of Rössing Uranium Mine, Namibia. Rock properties (uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity) of samples collected were determined in the laboratory. Drilling experiments were conducted in which feed pressure, air pressure, rotary speed, weight on the bit, and torque were varied to measure their effect on the penetration rate. The uniaxial compressive strength varied from 90–180 MPa for layered marble-quartzite and banded gneiss. Increases in feed pressure, weight on the bit, and rotary speed beyond the optimum level led to a decrease in penetration rate and caused the drill bit to ‘stall’. Results of the study revealed that penetration rate increases with an increase in the feed pressure and air pressure. After reaching a maximum value, the penetration rate begins to decrease despite increasing feed pressure. A very high torque causes the drill bit to stall, since the feed pressure is too high and the air pressure is not sufficient to remove the cuttings from blast-hole at maxium bailing velocities. The average penetration rate varied from 19 to 45 m/h for phase 2 of the pit, and from 17 to 68 m/h for phase 3. The optimum drilling machine parameters obtained in phase 2 and phase 3 were slightly lower than those currently being used at the mine. The trials of the optimum machine parameters will assist in reducing the cost of drilling, which varied from N$29.48 to N$36.31 per metre for the tricone bit. The drillability of rocks depends not only on the rock properties, but also on the drilling tools and operational variables. In rotary drilling, rotational speed, thrust, and flushing are the operational variables, and are known as the controllable parameters. Rock properties and geological conditions are the uncontrollable parameters. The upsurge in cobalt price and demand is propelled by high demand from the electronics and electric vehicle industry. Konkola Copper Mines has cobalt occurring with copper in the ratio 1:10 in ore. The ore is treated in the concentrator and recovered at the smelter as an alloy (Cu 70%, Co 4%–7%, 15% Fe). Subsequent processing of the cobalt alloy is challenging, with very few plants able to treat it, leading to marketing challenges. Konkola Copper Mines sought to improve the cobalt alloy by producing a slag that is easier to handle and process in subsequent processes. Cobalt alloy (3.60% Co, 85.4% Cu) was re-melted in a copper bath four times the mass of the alloy. Silica and lime were added for phase separation and fire refining commenced. Following completion of fire refining and after holding the temperature at 1200°C, cobalt-rich slag was skimmed and blister copper was cast into anodes for electrorefining

Os aços inoxidáveis possuem características essenciais para um bom acabamento quando o que se busca é estética e boa resistência à oxidação. Quando se específica um aço inoxidável, o acabamento é um dos aspectos relevantes que devem ser considerados. O acabamento possui uma importante influência em algumas características do material como, por exemplo, na facilidade da limpeza e na resistência à oxidação / corrosão. Há uma grande variedade de acabamentos. Através de ensaios de oxidação a quente, medição de potencial eletroquímico, medição de dureza a baixa carga (microdureza) e medição da tensão residual via difração de raios x foi possível perceber uma diferença entre os acabamentos 2D, 2B, RO, BB, Nº4 e Nº6. A medição de tensão residual mostrou qualitativamente que o aumento de dureza e o forte amarelamento ocorrido no material com determinados acabamentos é função de uma deformação elástica na superfície imposta durante alguns dos processos de fabricação desses aços. Esse mecanismo é relevante e interfere na resistência a oxidação e corrosão nos casos estudados.

THE White Knob copper-deposits are situated about three miles south of Mackay, on the Salmon River .branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, in Custer county, Idaho. An outline-map of this district is given in Fig. 1. The deposits have been known and spasmodically worked for many years, and a total of over 3.5 miles of tunnels, shafts and other workings has been driven with a view to their development. These extensive excavations have exposed the deposits sufficiently to permit a careful geological examination. The peculiar features which give special interest to this paper are the branching, free-like form of the ore-bodies; the absence of zones of secondary enrichment in the partly oxidized pyritic deposits, and the fact that while the deposits are associated in a general way with the contact of an eruptive rock with limestone, which it penetrates, the garnetization has taken place not in the limestone, as is the usual case, but in the igneous

In the transformation of carbonaceous materials, such as peat, to coals of various grades, the changes are known to be both physical and chemical and the grade of coal finally produced depends on the stage to which alteration proceeded. Those changes, which are frequently spoken of as the results of metamorphism, are due to pressure with accompanying heat and, according to the amount of metamorphism to which the sediments with the included carbonaceous beds have been subjected, there is a gradation from peat to anthracite coal, and even to graphite. The improvement in the quality of the coal as a result of metamorphism is due to an increase of the carbon content of the coal and a corresponding loss of the volatile materials. This rise in the quality of the coal according to the degree of metamorphism is well illustrated by the coals of western Canada. In the Plains area, where the deformation and the attendant metamorphism of the sediments is comparatively small, the coals are lignites, whereas in the mountains, where deformation has been severe, the coals are semi-anthracites. Sub-bituminous and bituminous coals occur in the intervening areas. The same general relationship between the quality of the coal and the degree of metamorphism holds true for the Appalachian basin of the United States, where there is a progressive improvement in the quality of the coals from west to east, that is, from an area of comparatively slight metamorphism to an area of marked deformation in the Appalachian Mountain region. But while it is true that this relationship holds in a general way, it has been found that the improvement in the quality of the coal is not always uniformly progressive, and there may be local variations such that an area containing coal with a carbon content indicating low or medium metamorphism may be surrounded by areas in which the coals are of higher grade. These local variations in many cases can be explained, and they in no way detract from the general rule that, in a region exhibiting a progressive betterment in the quality of the coal from an area of low metamorphism to one of more marked deformation, the quality of the coal, i.e., the amount of fixed carbon in the coal, may be taken as an index of the degree of metamorphism of the coal as well as of the sediments in which it occurs, It has been pointed out (') that certain coals, such as cannels, are unreliable indicators of the varying degree of metamorphism because of the nature of the material from which such coal was derived. Such coals, however, are not known in western Canada and their behaviour need not here be discussed.

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. No entanto, estes aplicativos não apresentam informações importantes como cálculos da incerteza de medição, cabendo uma análise da confiabilidade dos resultados obtidos por esses programas. O presente trabalho se propõe a comparar os valores dos limites de escoamento, de resistência, do módulo de elasticidade e da deformação final obtidos através do software Instron Bluehill® com os valores calculados através da análise minuciosa dos dados provenientes dos instrumentos de medição (célula de carga, extensômetro, sensor de deslocamento). Busca-se, assim, fornecer informações que auxiliem o trabalho de técnicos e engenheiros, além de estimar o erro percentual e desenvolver uma metodologia periódica para a garantia da confiabilidade da máquina de ensaio.

What is your assessment of the status of the mining industry as we see some evidence of an economic recovery? I am optimistic about the short and midterm prospects for the industry and, hence, for the professionals in the industry that constitute the majority of the SME membership. All who will read this interview recognize that the quality of life we enjoy today is largely a result of our achievements in the mining and minerals processing sectors. I believe that the sustainability of that quality of life and the aspirations of other sectors of the global community to attain that same lifestyle will significantly depend on the continued successes of these industries. Looking at some of the traditional economic indicators, we see predictions of continued increases in gold prices during the next 12 months as a new round of quantitative easing keeps real interest rates low and drives excess capital flows from countries with trade surpluses - who have traditionally parked their money in U.S. government bonds - into other investable assets, such as gold. On the fuel side of the industry, we have during the last decade seen a steady rise in the cost of coal, and some of the recent spot prices have seen dramatic increases. Some suggest that coal prices may rise sooner than anyone expects, as global reserves are revised downward. This is based on the hypothesis that some of the main coal-producing countries are overestimating supplies and that coal prices could start rising far sooner than anyone thinks - with obvious serious implications for energy policy. Those forecasters note that, for the past couple of decades, global supply has been dropping at a faster rate than consumption.

Pneumatic sinking of caissons has been established from mid-19th century. The technique of pneumatic sinking has been applied on many projects for underground construction up to depths over 20m below groundwater level since that time. Volker Staal en Funderingen, a known deep foundation contractor in the Netherlands, was awarded two contracts in 2015 for sinking in total 2 caissons in Hamburg (Germany) to large depths (over 30 m (100 ft) and two projects near Amsterdam (the Netherlands). The latter concerned two gate chambers for the world’s largest sea-lock, one of them was 55x81 m2 (180x266 ft) to a depth of 25.5 m (84 ft), which would mean a world record for pneumatic sinking! But with depths and dimensions like these, the deployment of personnel is the main limiting factor for production, despite all developments to date. It was decided to develop a remote controlled process, including the necessary equipment and monitoring systems. Monitoring not only the kinematics of the equipment in the working chamber and the production parameters related to the excavation but also of the structural behaviour of the sea-lock gate chambers was essential for approval of this innovative execution method. The lay-out and the sizes of the largest caisson the structural integrity was extremely critical for torsion and bending moments. A displacement controlled execution by the observational method was therefore required. In engineering a new approach for modelling the semi-continuous failure mechanisms of the soil was needed to understand the sensitivity of the excavation process and to define limit values for the execution. In the paper these structural and geotechnical issues will be explained together with the experiences during the execution.

Soil contamination by organic compounds is one of the most concerned issues on polluted soil. It is well known that there are limited methods to remediate the contaminated soil on site. Especially, the in-situ method for contaminated soil is too difficult to de-contaminate the organic pollutant. In this study, the fundamental ability of soil remediation, which aimed to decrease oil concentration in, in-situ process, have been researched by using a high pressure gas generated from ?crush composition? on artificially oil contaminated soil. The n-hexadecane (n-C16H34) and other organic compounds were selected as soil oil contaminators, gravimetric analysis by soxhlet extraction and GC-MS were used as qualitative and quantitative analysing methods. For the experimental examination, the influences on the difference in the concentration of n-hexadecane (and other organics), the tamping amount, position and repetition of crush composition in soil, and scale (size) of experimental model were investigated. The n-hexadecane concentration reduced by the explosive effect of crush composition showed a reasonable decrease of about 30 wt%~60 wt% compared to the initial n-hexadecane. The removed amount of n-hexadecane and distance from explosion point of the crush composition was related in scale and model of contaminated soil.

IT Is commonly recognized that a given material may be described as ductile or brittle only with reference to the conditions of test. Thus under the usual test conditions quartz is brittle, but under high pressures it is ductile. Salts that are brittle at room temperature become ductile at elevated temperatures. Pitch, brittle with respect o rapid loads, flows at low rates of loading. Pearlitic steel, ductile under the usual conditions of test, may be embrittled under the proper conditions of combined stresses, temperature, and rate of loading. EARLIER INVESTIGATIONS A clear analysis of the conditions necessary for plastic flow and for fracture was first given by Ludwik,1 who introduced two types of stress, the "flow stress" and the "stress at fracture." These stresses may refer to tensile or to shear stresses, or, in fact, to any type of stress. Ludwik considered these two stresses to be independent of one another, functions of the conditions of test and of the prior history of the material. For the purpose of analysis, both a flow stress and a stress at fracture can be envisaged as functions of strain over the entire range from zero to infinite strain. Thus, the material is brittle if the stress at fracture is less than the flow stress and ductile if the reverse is true. According to Ludwik's analysis, the problem of determining the effects of combined stresses, of temperature and of strain rate upon the behavior of metals reduces to a problem of determining the effect of these variables upon the flow stress and upon the stress at fracture. In the present paper, methods are described for determining the effects of two of these variables, temperature and strain rate, and examples are given of the dependence or now stress and stress at fracture, upon these two variables. The effect of combined stresses will be discussed in a succeeding paper. The flow stress may be determined from a load-diameter curve. Load-diameter curves were obtained over a wide range of temperature and over the limited range of strain rates obtainable with the lever-type Riehle machine used. The. curves were then converted to an extremely wide range of strain rate by making use of the equivalence of the effects of changes in strain rate and changes in temperature, previously proposed2 and demonstrated' by the authors. According to this principle of equivalence, strain rate E and temperature T affect the flow stress only through a single parameter p of the form: p = EeQ/RT [I] In this equation, R is the gas constant (2 cal. per gram mol per deg. C.), and Q is a heat of activation, which varies from material to material, and may depend upon the strain, but not upon the strain rate or the temperature. There is associated with every value of p a flow-stress curve. Combinations of strain rate and of temperature that give the same p have the same flow-stress curve. Therefore, merely by changing the temperature of test, the effect of changing the strain rate may be obtained. Thus, under isothermal conditions, the material will behave the same at

The valorization of alkaline waste materials from thermal processes utilizing intensified mineral carbonation routes is investigated. The principal advantages of this approach are the chemical stability and storage safety of mineral carbonates, the opportunities for process integration presented by the technology, and the potential for conversion of low-value materials into useful products. Treatment and disposal of steel slags are a costly burden on steel plants. Sustainable solutions for Argon Oxygen Decarbonisation (AOD) and Continuous Casting (CC) stainless steel slags and Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) steel slag are desired. An integrated on-site mineral carbonation approach is envisaged as a favourable solution.

"Raman spectroscopy as an instrumental technique for the determination of silicate structure is widely accepted. This method was utilized for analysis of structural modifications associated with the addition of network modifying species. Silicate melts are described by the extent of oxygen bridging. Therefore, understanding the effect different oxides have on modifying the silicate structure will provide valuable information regarding the removal of boron from silicon in slag refining processes. Samples ranging from CaO/SiO2 = 0.56-1.2 were evaluated with and without varying concentrations of B2O3. The addition of CaO to SiO2 revealed Q2 species constitute 45% of the Qn species and addition of B2O3 to the high concentration CaO system results in an increase in Q2 and a decrease in Q0 . The disappearance of the Raman band associated to the three-member ring in the low concentrated CaO system indicates boron addition and destruction of the ring.IntroductionExtensive studies on the structure of silicate systems have been performed using Raman spectroscopy with consensus on the Raman shift associated with different bridging oxygen units [1]. Most of these studies are motivated by the lack of a fundamental understanding of the processes involved in petrology. Due to this, an opportunity exists to build on the knowledge obtained from these studies and conduct more research on slag structures relevant to industrial applications, as these systems are often compositionally similar to magmatic melts. Raman spectroscopic studies of industrial slags will provide insight into the possible structural modifications necessary to enhance removal of impurity species from the metal phase to the slag phase."

O presente trabalho teve o intuito de avaliar, em planta piloto, a influência da perda de pressão de sucção dos gases de exaustão nos parâmetros de produtividade da sinterização, consumo específico de combustível, rendimento da mistura total e qualidade do sínter. Foram realizados testes com diferentes valores de pressão de sucção dos gases de exaustão controlados em 1.200, 1.000 e 800mmH2O. A partir dos resultados dos testes avaliados foi possível verificar a influência da perda de pressão de sucção dos gases de exaustão no desempenho do processo de sinterização e seu impacto na qualidade do sínter produzido. Os resultados demonstraram que com o aumento crescente da perda de pressão de sucção dos gases de exaustão ocorreu significativa queda de produtividade da sinterização, queda dos valores de índice de degradação sob redução (RDI), queda do consumo de combustível e aumento dos valores de índice de redutibilidade (IR), rendimento da mistura total e teste de tambor (TI).

Commercial grade gypsum beds up to 16 feet thick is present in southwestern Indiana. The major deposits are found at a depth of 350 feet to more than 500 feet below the surface. The ore body averages about 75 to 95 percent gypsum. Two companies are currently exploiting a deposit which underlies an area of several square miles near Shoals, in Martin County. Another deposit has been located in southwestern Owen County but has not been developed. The Indiana Geological Survey is currently drilling in Greene County and is considering further exploratory work in Perry end Dubois Counties.
