"Dedicated to Professor Kurt Leschonski on the occasion of his 60th birthdayAbstractThe kinetics of batch grinding quartz from a feed of 600 by 425 Jim to a product of 80% less than 10 µm have been determined using screening and laser diffractometer sizing for size analysis. The specific rates of breakage decreased by a factor of about three when the material became less than about 100 µm in size, but the primary breakage distribution function also changed to give proponionately more fine material, so that the grinding efficiency expressed as the development of surface area (B.E:T.) per unit of energy input did not decrease. Analysis of the shape of the particles in the 2S x 38 µm size range showed that particles of this size produced by roll crushing or by 8 minutes of grinding of a 42S x 600 µm feed were not different but at long grinding times the particles were rounded. This suggests that the breakage mechanism changes to give more chipping and abrasion and less disintegrative fracture. As the material approached the ultrafine size range it adhered to the mill case and there was no further size reduction. However, a technique for striking the mill case to dislodge the particles was successful in allowing further grinding to 400Jo by weight less than 2 µm.1 IntroductionIt has long been known that it is difficult to accomplish ultrafme grinding in a tumbling ball mill. It has been reported [12, 13] that there is no further size reduction after some hours of grinding cement clinker in laboratory ball mills. Austin and Bagga (1] and Shah and Austin [16] have given an analysis of the kinetics of dry grinding in a laboratory ball mill, introducing the concept of a slowing-down factor K, which is the ratio of the specific rates of breakage at some long time of grinding to the normal specific rates of breakage. They showed that this factor decreased as fine material accumulated in the mill charge. Cottaar and co-workers [8-10] showed that the movement of solid in a dry laboratory ball mill was influenced by the fineness of the solid and by the presence of air, and that evacuation of air from the mill caused particle sedimentation and low rates of breakage.The concept of the slowing-down factor has also been used in wet grinding [17, 18]. At very .high slurry concentrations it appears to be correlated with a steady decrease of mill power caused by the build up of a layer of deposit sticking to the mill case. This reduces the effective mill diameter and, eventually, the balls start to adhere in the layer and centrifuge. A decrease of mill power always indicates less lifting and tumbling of the media and, hence, less breakage. However, slowing-down of breakage rates was also observed at lower slurry concentrations where there was no change in mill power."

The flash reduction of fine iron ore in a dilute-phase system was investigated at 500° to 900° C within a heated stainless steel tubular coil. Alabama brown iron ore and Mesabi semitaconite ore were fed into the coil concurrently with reducing gases of hydrogen and reformed natural gas, so that the velocity of the gas at the reaction temperature was sufficient to entrain and pneumatically transport the solids through the coil. Reduction is very rapid with retention time of the ore in the coil varying from 4 to 15 seconds. Variables affecting reduction are temperature, ore feed rate, and gas flow or velocity. Results of the studies show that a partially reduced product (10-to 25-percent reduction) can be made which, on subsequent magnetic concentration, yields a concentrate containing 64 to 70 percent iron with a 90-to 94-percent iron recovery. Maximum reduction of 77 percent was obtained when hydrogen was used in a four-stage reduction test to yield a product containing 61 percent metallic iron.

The tremendous growth in grinding mill size and horsepower during the '70s demanded advancements in gear cutting technology and equipment for the '80s. Computers are used as an aid in the design and selection of the mill drive system; sophisticated computer graphics are used to create manufacturing drawings; and a new generation of gear cutting machines are used to manufacture the gears. These new gear cutters can generate-cut gears over 40' (12.2 m) in diameter at an AGMA quality level exceeding the currenty acceptable standards. The precision of the resulting gear assures maximum tooth contact, which will result in longer gear set life.

"This paper deals with the corrosion characterization of quartz particlate ZA-27 alloy metal matrix composites (MMCs). Quartz particles of size 50-80 microns are used as reinforcement. MMC's are prepared according to ASTM standards. Composites containing. 2, 4, and -6% by weight of quartz and unreinforced matrix were tested using 1 -N hydrochloric acid: The composite was found to be more corrosive resistant than matrix alloy. In each test the corrosion resistance of both alloy and composites were found to decrease with the exposure time.1. IntroductionMetal matrix composites- (MMCs) offer designers many added benefits, as they are particularly suited for applications requiring good strength at high temperature, good structural rigidity, dimensional stability, and light weight 1-5. The trend is towards safe usage of the MMC parts in the automobile engine, which work particularly at high temperature and pressure environments Particles reinforced MMCs has been the most popular over the last two decades.ZA alloy MMCs have most popular families being represented by. ZA-27 alloy reinforced with ceramic particulate. Although the incorporation of the second phase into a matrix material can enhance the physical and mechanical properties of the base metal, it could also significantly change the corrosion behavior.ZA alloys have been used extensively in industry. This is attributed to their excellent fludity, castability and good mechanical properties. Among the zinc-based foundry alloys, the ZA family of alloy have been widely used during the past few years. ZA alloys have many advantage over aluminium based ones, especially high strength with a low casting temperature 8."

"Pyroclastic rocks are useful guides to volcanic centers due to the tendency of their fragments to increase in size and volume toward the source vent. The felsic rocks of these centers can be the prime hosts of base metal deposits in the Precambrian Shield; their sub-volcanic equivalents are often the focus of porphyry copper mineralization in the Cordillera. Quantitative mapping of pyroclastic rocks has not yet developed into a routine prospecting tool in Canada, however, possibly due to the cumbersome nature of existing manual techniques and their limitation to structurally simple terrains.A rapid pyroclastic mapping method has been developed whereby the field geologist acquires only a down-plunge outcrop photograph, a record of the fragmental deformation ellipsoid and a record of some descriptive features from each station. Mean fragment size and volume percent are obtained later in the laboratory from a photo-enlargement: by means of a digital analyzer. A computer program uses the strain parameters to 'undeform' the field measurements and obtains genetic information from the descriptive data. Results can be superimposed on a geologic map, with values for each station being represented by a dot of a specified diameter corresponding to the size or volume percentile range to which the value belongs.Control traverses were run over the pyroclastic rocks surrounding the Anderson Lake mine and the Flin Flon South main shaft in northern Manitoba. In both locations, the mapping has delineated regular increasing trends in mean size and volume per cent toward the head frame."

Este trabalho visou compreender as características microestruturais de uma liga de NiTi rica em Ni na forma de discos com 10 mm de diâmetro forjados a quente, que foram submetidos a um tratamento térmico de solubilização com distintas temperaturas e tempos de encharque. Foram testadas as seguintes condições: 800ºC/10, 800ºC/120min, 850ºC/120min e 950ºC/120min. Foi observado através dos ensaios de DSC e DRX com radiação de synchrotron que o tratamento de solubilização com 950ºC/120min é o mais adequado para o tratamento de solubilização prévia ao processamento termomecânico a ser aplicado nesta liga afim de produzir no final deste processamento fios ortodônticos.

Miss Gertrude Carey lived next to us in Martinsburg, West Virginia for several years. She was a retired school teacher. She was also a cousin to Messers Dan and Joe Baker who owned and operated Standard Lime and Stone Company, a predecessor of Martin Marietta Corporation. She-was well acquainted with the Baker family and their history. Here is one of the legends she told my wife, Jean, and me. The Bakers were originally Tanners. They had a tannery near Frederick, Maryland. There were several boys in the family and when they were grown each man had specified responsibilities. Will Baker was assigned the duty of locating, buying, and transporting tanbark and lime. As he traveled through Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to locate and buy tanbark, he also talked the farmers out of some pieces of lime, which the farmers had produced in holes dug and filled with layers of limestone and wood. Will Baker took the lime and soaked a piece of hide in the milk of lime. If the lime did not spot the hide, Will Baker would get the farmer to burn some lime for him, and further tests would be made. If these tests were good - the Bakers bought the land. They eventually discovered that the limestone that would make lime that wouldn't spot the hide would also be suitable for producing steel. They began producing lime just outside Harpers Ferry, West Virginia in pots and upright kilns. That stone too small for the kilns was just perfect for railroad ballast. Now you know how "Baltimore Blue Bloods" got together!!

Occidental Oil Shale Inc. has spent the last eight years at its Logan Wash. mine near DeBeque, Colorado, developing its modified in-situ oil shale process for obtaining oil from oil shale. Modified in-situ technology involves large underground chambers, or retorts, which are formed by mining out a minimal volume of rock to allow explosive expansion of the surrounding rock into tile mined void volumes. The resulting rubblized retort volume must contain a fairly uniform particle size distribution and void distribution to permit maximum oil recovery during subsequent in-situ processing operations. The more uniform the rubblized volume of particles, the more oil recovery obtained during processing. The processing involves first igniting the top of the retort and then. injecting air into the top of the retort to drive the combustion front downward through the entire rubblized volume. The oil is continuously collected at the bottom of the retort during the processing.

About 20 percent of world gold production has been contributed by gold deposits in Archaean greenstone belts, of which ca 2100 tonnes of gold has been produced from Archaean greenstone belts in Western Australia (Phillips, in press). These deposits are, therefore, important exploration targets and an under-standing of their nature and genesis can help to formulate exploration strategies and delineate potential targets.A literature survey of Archaean granitoid-greenstone terrains indicates that a wide variety of lithologies host gold deposits. The major part of production from the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia, has come from mafic volcanics andintrusives (70% of production),with significant contributions from BIF-hosted ores (15%) and low production from sediments, felsic volcanics, porphyry intrusives and granitoids (Groves et al., in press). The history of gold and silver analyses shows an interesting duality. On one hand, classical chemical and instrumental methods have evolved to meet changing needs, but on the other hand, the age-old and somewhat empirical fire assay has remained a popular tool. Inasmuch as gold and silver generally have been present in ores at low concentra¬tions, methods have been challenged by a need for sensitivity and selectivity coupled with reasonable assay time. A progressive increase in the importance of low grade materials as ore sources has led to the need for improved methods. Assays of these materials are required for process control and accounting in operating plants as well as for guiding research and development activities. The analytical response to these needs is evidenced by numerous reviews published through 1977-¬e.g., cf Kolthoff and Elving (1966), Beamish and Van Loon (1966, 1972, and 1977), Young (1971) , Mallett (1970), and Sen Gupta (1973). In this paper we present a brief sketch of the history and status of various gold and silver methods. A more detailed summary of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is Given, as this method has gained in popularity more than other assay methods. AAS methods currently in use are summarized and discussed briefly. This paper is not meant to be a detailed review, as are the above mentioned publications. Rather, we borrow from those works and more recent papers to report trends in gold and silver analyses (particularly in AAS). Also, we discuss some selected poten¬tial problems, and problems that have been experienced by this laboratory.

"Advances in technology provide educators with valuable tools to enhance their teaching and efficiently deliver content to larger audiences. University educators are often encouraged to become more “research intensive” and to increase student enrollment. Faced with these pressures, there is a tendency to use technology to improve teaching efficiencies rather than to enhance existing teaching approaches. Practical learning in applied engineering courses would suffer greatly if hands-on experience is not emphasized. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of new technologies applied to learning, and methods to incorporate more hands-on experiential teaching techniques to applied mining engineering courses.RÉSUMÉ Les avancées technologiques fournissent aux éducateurs des outils intéressants pour rehausser leur enseignement et livrer efficacement de la matière à de grands auditoires. Les éducateurs universitaires sont souvent encouragés à devenir plus « axés sur la recherche » et d’augmenter l’inscription d’étudiants. Face à ces pressions, il y a une tendance à utiliser la technologie pour améliorer l’efficacité d’enseignement plutôt que de rehausser les approches existantes d’enseignement. L’apprentissage concret dans les cours d’ingénierie appliquée souffrirait grandement si l’accent n’est pas mis sur l’expérience pratique. Vanadium, although widely spread in minute quantities through the crust of the earth, is found in few places sufficiently concentrated to be economically mined and prepared for use. Most rocks carry from a trace to a few hundredths of a per cent of vanadium oxide, and coal ash may carry about as much as the rocks, Much of the "coal" quoted in the literature as carrying vanadium has been asphaltite, and in other ccal the vanadium is of late introduction. The ash of the petroleums, though usually present in very small quantity, may carry a large percentage of vanadiun, so that production of vanadium from it has been seriously considered. Naturally the ashes of soze asphaltites similarly carry vanadium.' The great deposit at Minasragra, Peru, to which further reference will be made, is probably an altered asphaltite. Ilmenite and cther iron minerals usually carry vanadium 10 and some has been saved from the minette ores of France. 11 Many veins that carry lead copper and zinc minerals also carry a little vanadium, which, especially if the veins are in a comparatively dry region, such as the southwestern United States, northern Mexico, Northern Rhodesia, Southwest Africa, or Spain, collects in the oxidized parts of the veins as vanadinite,

Denison Mines Limited has been processing uranium ore in the Elliot Lake area for the past 20 years. As the original concept of uranium processing has been modified somewhat over this period, the present paper will describe the current recovery practices at the Denison mill from crushing through concentrate drying and packing . Special emphasis will be placed on the leaching, ion exchange and precipitation sections of the process, with consideration being given to the entire circuit. Descriptions will be given of equipment now being used and control strategies will be discussed.

The year 1991 recorded unprecedented change throughout the world; war in the Middle East, economic recession in key industrial nations, upheaval in Eastern Europe, and the disintegration of the former U.S.S.R. These issues and growing environmental concerns will affect the entire world mining industry. Environmental issues continue to have an ever greater effect on industrial minerals. In the United States, major issues involving the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the recent Stormwater Rule by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) affect many types of mineral operations. Significant developments include an important decision in 1991 by a Federal Appellate Court to overturn EPA's asbestos ban on certain products, partly on environmental grounds, and proposed legislation that would overhaul or abandon the 1872 Mining Act. On a global scale, prominent issues include environmental concerns over mining in the Antarctic and Arctic regions and a cutback in plans to clean up the Kola Peninsula in the Commonwealth of Independent States (C.I.S.).

After a long series of laboratory and in-mine tests, a cost- effective, mineworthy, reduced-noise auger miner cutting head was de signed, fabricated, and field-tested by Wyle Laboratories under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Compared with standard auger cutting heads, the new heads reduced noise by 10 dBA at the jacksetter's position and by 6 dBA at the operator's position. This report contains detailed fabrication instructions, including engineering drawings, that show how a standard auger cutting head can be modified to produce a reduced-noise auger.

Alternatively are they a necessary evil'? Exploration geologists are a much higher profile group but then again the higher they are the bigger they Bill. At a mine site they are reluctantly being accepted as equals by mining engineers given the requirements of the `Code' in the reporting of Ore Reserves. How best can mining geologists service their customers? Are more revealing questions to be answered in who are their customers? In the past mining geologists lived isolated existences pouring over plans and sections, now with user-friendly software packages available and the use of LAN, mining geologists and mining engineers talk electronically - God forhid what the future might hying - they might even talk to accountants and metallurgists!

Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended 524 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than one metre in width to pipes with a surface area of 128ha. The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments.

Cyanide speciation and behavior have been examined at three active heap leach operations, three heaps undergoing rinsing, and three sites with cyanide contaminated groundwater, all in the southwestern U.S. Data from these studies demonstrate that strong cyanometallic complexes of iron and cobalt can play ?an important role in cyanide behavior throughout the lifetimes of heap leach operations. In active circuits, we find evidence that significant amounts of cyanide combine with iron and cobalt to form strong cyanometallic complexes, and that these species can be adsorbed, probably onto iron hydroxides, or precipitated as insoluble cyanometallic compounds. When spent heaps are rinsed, the release of this cyanide is likely controlled by the slow kinetics of desorption from, or dissolution of, solids that have gone largely uncharacterized. We find evidence that strong cyanometallic complexes can give rise to transient free cyanide in some settings by rapid photo dissociation where heap rinse effluent is exposed to sunlight in open channels or translucent sample bottles. Thus, these species can complicate the ,preparation of spent heaps for decommissioning, even where regulatory standards ?are based on weak acid dissociable cyanide. There is a critical need for information on the form and stability of adsorbed and precipitated cyanide in spent ore heaps, on the concentrations of strong cyanometallic complexes in mineral processing effluents -particularly the complexes of cobalt, and on the natural attenuation of iron and cobalt cyanometallic complexes in both surface and subsurface waters.

Recovery of tin and copper from concen trates containing cassiterite, stannite and chalcopyrite was studied in laboratory-scale tests designed to simulate continuous operation of the matte fuming process in which tin is recovered as SnS fume while copper accumulates in the matte. Charges made up of 300g of mixtures of the concentrate and siliceous flux were added at a uniform rate in pelletized form to crucibles containing 300g of matte and 50g of slag (both of which were recovered from previous tests), while blowing through the matte with air or oxygen-nitrogen mixtures at a rate of 3 to 5 1/min. Accurate material balances enabled the effects of process operating conditions on tin recovery and sulfur utilization to be deter- mined. When operated correctly, the matte fuming process gave tin recoveries exceeding 90 percent in spite of wide variations in the copper content of the matte and in the operat- ing conditions. Deterioration of tin recovery was associated with undersaturation of the slag with respect to silica, and with high partial pressure of sulfur dioxide (greater than approx- imately 0.2) brought about by oxygen enrichment of the blowing air. The utilization of sulfur varied widely in low grade mattes. Copper in excess of approx- imately 10% promoted formation of SO2 by the commonly accepted reaction: FeS + 1-120 2= FeO + S02 while in copper-free and lower grade mattes a substantial fraction of the oxygen was consumed in the alternative reaction FeS + i 02 = FeO + z S2.
