The White Pine Mine is situated in Ontonagon County, approximately six miles south of Lake Superior, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Figs. 1 and 2). The ore body mined by White Pine Copper Company occurs in the lower - most 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, a series of middle - to upper Keweenawan shales, siltstones, and sandstones. This paper elaborates on the solution of problems in ore grade control and mine planning arising from the presence of an essentially barren sandstone stratum within the ore body.

Sivas-Divrigi flotation plant has a capacity of 90,000 tpy. Beneficiation of the tailings of iron ore magnetic separator seems to be attractive, because of its Cu, Co, and Ni contents. In the experimental work, sulfidic flotation concentrate is produced from these tailings. A roasting-leaching-H2S precipitation procedure is used to treat this concentrate, containing 0.55% Cu, 0.51% Co, 0.74% Ni, and 0.027% Zn. Sulfatizing roasting is carried out in a rotary furnace at 690°C. Roasted product is leached with 10 gpl HzSOl at 70°C and 30% pulp density. For the precipitation of desired metal, H2S is bubbled through the concentrated solution of repeated leaching, under controlled temperature and pH. Final metal recoveries of 91% Cu, 91% Co, and 50% Ni, and 92% Zn are attained. Roasting gases with their 13% SO2 content are suitable for H2SO4 production and the leach residues can be integrated with the iron ore processing plant as they contain 57.4% Fe and very low non-ferrous metals.

Many oil and gas producers find it advantageous to borrow against the value of their hydrocarbon re- serves. This paper considers the requirements for a reserve based loan and the calculations that a bank would perform to arrive at a loan amount. Three of the most common loan structures, i.e. a term loan, a production payment, and a revolving credit/term loan will be discussed. A typical outline for each type of loan is presented. Finally, a comparison of major considerations in the three financing techniques is shown.

"The fortunes of mining companies and their implied value are tied to cycles - both economic and commodity – within which they operate. Hence the determination of appropriate future metal prices is one of the most critical factors faced by mineral valuators especially for advanced projects. Price, and hence revenue, is usually the most sensitive input to the valuation model. Empirical studies of past forecasts show that the success rate for commodity price forecasting is very poor. This paper explores various approaches and comments on their strengths and weaknesses. We conclude that careful evaluation of long-term metal prices is a key element and is hardly a luxury that can be left to simple averages or rules of thumb. INTRODUCTION Discounted Cash Flow (""DCF"") analysis, is well suited for the valuation of advanced mineral development assets, for which there are identified mineral resources and some form of economic assessment (Pre-Feasibility or Feasibility Study). The DCF method is also the most commonly used method for determining value for such assets. It provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash flows from profits (or losses) to the magnitude of the initial cash flow (investment) needed for capital expenditures to purchase or to develop an asset for commercial production. The method proves useful in making investment decisions as it allows for the quantification of the Net Present Value (“NPV”), as well as the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Payback Period on initial investment capital. Valuation by its very nature is a forward-looking exercise. The DCF method attempts to estimate the NPV of expected future cash flows, by selecting factors that will likely affect future cash flow based on informed analysis. One of the most critical and sensitive factors is the determination of appropriate future commodity prices. “The variables that have the greatest impact on a DCF evaluation are the reserves, the metal prices, and the discount rate.”1 The determination of future commodity prices for valuation purpose or during M&A negotiations is a hotly contested issue. There are a number of analysts, institutions and specialized commercial data suppliers that provide both short and long-term commodities price forecasts. Also, the use of an aggregated mean for all available forecasts, or consensus forecasted prices for valuation purposes is not uncommon. The methods used in making forecasts for each forecaster may vary and in many cases may not be publically disclosed. Nonetheless, the aggregated mean of all forecasted commodity prices of reputed institutions is usually taken to “represent the market’s view of likely future commodity prices.”"

This paper presents a detailed and systematic approach to metallurgy diagnostics using an integrated novel gold deportment technique for complex copper-gold and refractory gold ore bodies. This uantitative gold deportment for these complex ore bodies is a challenging task due to reasons such as lower grades, high variability of visible and invisible gold content in different sulphides and iron oxide phases, significant presence of disseminated and composite carbonaceous matters along with associations of various copper sulphide phases. Gold mostly occurs as "invisible gold" (sub-microscopic gold) as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulphides and other phases. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing and finely disseminated carbonaceous matter adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various process streams. Some case studies are presented in this paper to demonstrate the value of a high confidence gold deportment methodology in developing insights for problem diagnostics and to identify opportunities for metallurgical improvements. A systematic and holistic approach involving different fields of expertise is critical for successful development and delivery of solutions for complex ore bodies. "A computational method based on a continuum-mechanical approach to simulate rock cutting is developed and evaluated. The aim is to obtain the local loading acting at the cutting pick during operation. The explicit FEM is chosen to model the pick-rock interaction. The presented method takes advantage of (i) an advanced material model (ii) a robust contact algorithm and (iii) fast calculations due to parallelization. A damage-plasticity law is chosen and modified with user-subroutines. A user integrated element deletion routine evades critical mesh distortions. Infinite elements at the model boundaries avoid unrealistic deformation wave reflection.INTRODUCTIONExcavation in mining and tunneling is a costly and complex process. Special equipment such as the roadheader (Figure 1) is employed to cut the rock in the excavation process but high material strengths limit their usability (Tockner 1999). Nowadays a challenge is to extend their field of application to harder and more abrasive rock materials. The forces on the pick (Figure 2) are of great importance and determine wear and especially the efficiency of the machine. Figure 2 shows the principle of cutting and the predominant forces. The variation of pick geometry, cutting depth or attack angle will result in an alteration of these forces and determine the efficiency of the process (Tockner 1999). The mechanisms of rock cutting follow the principle of indentation (Kou et al. 1999). Directly under the indenter a hydrostatic stress state evolves causing the material to fail only due to crushing and fragmentation mechanisms. In the close surroundings large strains emerge and tensile cracks are formed but in a further distance the material behaves elastically."

This report summarizes the work accomplished under Bureau of Mines contract H0188068. The contract required design and construction of a high voltage (7.5 KV) explosion proof cable connector for use on underground coal mine drag cables. A connector was constructed with elastomeric phase insulators that provide insulation shielding throughout the connector length. Connector housing was made of flame resist-ant cast poly urethane with no exposed metal components. Electrical and mechanical testing of the completed coupler resulted in satisfactorily meeting most of the design testing requirements.

When one's attention moves from the control of a process unit or from the control of a department of similar units, to the control of an entire plant, two things must change. One is the techniques of control, and the other, the goal or purpose of control. The goal is no longer maintaining a certain quality of product or maintaining a particular flow rate through a process unit. The goal becomes economic - how to make the most money out of the plant. The principal control techniques become those of optimizing, rather than regulating. It is quite common to discuss the control of an entire plant in terms of three levels of control l; regulation, supervision, and optimization. Regulation is the control of inputs to a process unit at desired values. This is accomplished by two or three mode analog controllers or DDC loops. The second level of control is the selection of these desired values, e.g., set-points of the regulation controllers. The third level is to make such adjustments or corrections to the supervisory calculations so as to optimize the plant profit. It is immediately evident that supervisory control and optimizing control are intimately related, and a distinct dividing line cannot always be drawn between the two. Some authors prefer to add even more levels such as adaptive control and management information systems, but we believe our point is well made without further division of the functions which are necessary for complete plant control. To accomplish the economic goal, that is, the optimizing (maximizing) of the profit of a mineral processing plant, the plant should ideally be operated as if it were a separate company, buying its raw materials on the open market and selling its products on the open market. While petrochemical plants endeavor to operate in that manner, unfortunately this is not true of a mineral processing plant. The plant manager has to accept the amount and quality of ore the mining department delivers to him, and the products (concentrates) are delivered to another department of the company for further refining. UPWARDS of 200,000 engineers in this country are sufficiently interested in engineering as a profession to have joined a society, but not over 10% of them belong to any one society. There is a widely-felt need of an over-all organization of all the societies to act as spokesman for all engineers on matters of common concern. On a local basis, over 100,000 engineers in 35 metropolitan areas have organized themselves into local councils, and are doing an effective job of intersocietal co-operation within their sphere of activity. In the last few years much has been said and written about a similar organization on a national scale. Everybody wants iteverybody is talking about it-it's in the air-it's coming-it's inevitable. Although it is no longer necessary to talk about why or whether there should be such an organization, there is no such unanimity about what it should be like. This paper outlines a proposed organization by answering four questions-who, how, what, and who will pay for it.

Introduction This paper presents in detailed form the results of settling tests that were published in a few preliminary notes in the April 1949 issue of the Bulletin (p. 166). Carborel is the trade name for sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose and aluminium carboxymethyl-cellulose produced by the reaction of monochloroacetic acid on the alkali cellulose to form an ether. The water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose has been known in Europe for several years as sodium cellulose glycolate and has been marketed under several trade names. These cellulose ethers, however, are relatively new in North America, where the name carboxymethyl-cellulose is often abbreviated to C.M.C., or they are referred to as cellulose gum. The particular grade of Carboxel used in the settling tests in the mill of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is the high-viscosity sodium carboxymethyl- cellulose known as Carboxel H.V. It is a white, fluffy powder and is hygroscopic, although not deliquescent. Carboxel solutions in water are colourless, odourless, and resistant to beat and light. They are stable to alkalies, but are precipitated by acids when the pH is reduced below 4.0, and also by solutions of soluble lead, iron, copper, aluminium, and chromium salts. Solutions of Carboxel exhibit the properties of hydrophilic colloids.

ALL mine ore here must be concentrated before shipment, which involves selective flotation. Three products are made: lead, zinc, and pyrite concentrates. The equipment and practice are so well outlined in the accompanying flow sheet that only a few amplifying remarks are necessary. After crushing at the mine to approximately 4 in., the ore is carried by aerial tram about 4 1/2, mi. to the mill. From 1800 to 2000 metric tons per day, excluding Sundays, is thus transported. At the mill, the buckets are hand-tipped into the bins. After crushing to pass a ¼ -in. square opening, the ore may be stored in reserve crushed-ore bins or ball-mill feed bins as desired. Total bin capacity at the mill is about 4000 metric tons. The concentrator is arranged in three independent grinding sections, each fed from its own storage bin. Grinding operations follow standard practice, with ball mills in single-stage closed circuit with classifiers, the overflow from which is delivered to the lead circuit rougher flotation machines,

"Abstract - MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic data collected over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide deposits have been modeled using three modeling packages. The EMQ package is a quick inversion tool which indicates that the Iso body is a dipping, plate-like body. The New Insco body is inferred to have a geometry somewhere between a dipping plate and a sphere. The Maxwell package was used to refine the properties of the plate-like body at Iso. The EMIGMA package was able to identify which parts of the New Insco orebody were more conductive. It was observed that the most conductive parts correspond to copper-rich zones and the next most conductive to pyrite-rich zones. The EMIGMA package was also used to show that a thick-prism model might be more appropriate for the New Insco orebody. Gravity modeling constrained by the known geology was successful in identifying the denser sulfide zones. The densest zones appear to be pyrite rich. Magnetic modeling identified diabase dikes. Over New Insco, a small magnetic anomaly was attributed to pyrrhotite-rich sulfides. There was only a weak magnetic anomaly over the Iso body, consistent with the nonmagnetic sulfides logged in the holes drilled at that location. Au-dessus du dépôt New Insco, on observe une faible anomalie magnétique correspondant aux sulfures non magnétiques observés dans les carottes de forages à cet endroit."

As an academic in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Toronto, Torstein made solid contributions to the advancement of knowledge pertaining to production and refining of both nonferrous and light metals, and to the development of inquisitive and innovative young people in extractive metallurgy. In this profile, the authors highlight aspects of Torstein's rich personality and of his contributions to his field of expertise.

In 2016, a 3.7-ML magnitude event caused by mining activity occurred at a longwall mine in southwestern Virginia which was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and felt by local residents. The event was the largest of its kind since a global mine design change by the operator was instituted in 2008 following three large events in 2005, 2006 and 2007 (3.4, 4.3, and 3.4, respectively). Two of the three pre-2008 events (2005 and 2007) damaged ventilation controls in the mine which fueled a mine fire. In 2016 the mine’s management requested researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to access geological data and determine what parameters could possibly lead to events of a magnitude of 1.0 ML or greater. The influences of these factors on the occurrence of stress and gas phenanena in mining exploration are considered.

"How well is the Canadian coal industry able to expand in the tough competition with other fuels in Canada and with other suppliers in the international, metallurgical and thermal coal trade? Coal production as a whole decreased between 1950and 1960 and, although there has been a tripling of production since then, underground production continued to decrease until 1975. This trend has been reversed to a certain extent as a result of the modernization of mines in Cape Breton, but in 1978 over 85% of coal production came from surface mining.Against this background, the paper reviews current Canadian mining operations as described in papers presented at the 1979 CIM Annual General Meeting. Conclusions are then drawn regarding some of the longer-term mining applications in relation to the latest coal demand forecast, which indicates a potential Canadian production requirement of 160 million tonnes per year by 2000. IntroductionThe Canadian 'coal industry is experiencing a period of expansion and a new record for production is set with each passing year. This growth pattern over the last IS years has been based on two main markets-the generation of electricity in Canada and the export of coking coal to Japan. Supply to those markets has entailed either the development of mining, coal preparation and transportation systems for the delivery of large volumes of products with predetermined specifications or the establishment of minesite plants designed specifically to suit the characteristics of the coal in the adjacent deposits (Fig. I).Coal is a low-value commodity in relation to its bulk, and the economics of coal use become progressively less attractive with increasing distance from the producing mine. The transportation component in the export trade and in the movement of western coal to Ontario is a major cost factor. In the latter case, it approaches the cost of coal produced at the mine. In addition, the .international competition among coking coal producers chasing diminishing markets in a worldwide steel recession as well as the competition from U.S. coals and other fuel s for Canadian thermal coal have introduced a tight set of parameters to govern mining practices in all parts of the country. Some appreciation of the required changes in mining techniques brought about by declining traditional markets and the rigorous demands of the new bulk markets can be gained by comparing production from surface and underground mines over the past 25 years (Fig . 2)."

The cover (cap) over the tailings pit at Nabarlek uranium mine must be structurally stable as it will act as a barrier to radon gas emission and have to contain other long-lived radionuclides. Structural stability is primarily an issue of erosional stability in the context of a design life of thousands of years. The primary agent of erosion is fluvial, dominated by rainwash, overland flow, filling and gullying in the local area. Other agents of erosion are of less concern although biogenic agents of erosion (eg termites and windthrow) may enhance fluvial activity. Several methods may be used to assess erosional stability. They fall into two main categories, namely erosion modelling and geomorphic modelling. The former is illustrated by the Universal Soil Loss Equation in which parameters describing aspects of the geotechnical and hydrological properties of the rehabilitated surface are used as input for the modelling of erosion rates. The latter is illustrated by estimates of gully and valley erosion using empirical models. Estimates of the erosion rates and stability of the Nabarlek cover are presented. The two main techniques are complementary and it is argued that rehabilitation design must make use of both approaches when estimating erosion and geomorphic stability. More recent developments in geomorphic modelling using numerical techniques incorporate both approaches.
