Samples of ash from the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mt. St. Helens Were collected from several locations in eastern Washington and Montana. The optical microscope and the combined scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive x-ray microprobe were used to determine the composition and mineralogical characteristics of the samples. In addition, a quantitative image analyzer was used to examine the particle size distribution, and x-ray diffraction was used to identify major minerals. Both polished sections and ultra thin sections (less than 5 ~m in thickness) were prepared to study the mineralogical characteristics. The use of ultra thin sections provided access to microstructural detail. Mineralogically, the samples ranged from almost totally glassy to almost totally crystalline. Crystal-line samples were dominated by plagioclase feldspar (andesine) and ortho-pyroxene (hypersthene) with smaller amounts of titaniferous magnetite and hornblende. Nearly all the samples contained from less than 1 to 3 wt% free crystalline silica (quartz, trydimite, or cristobalite).

"A coal bump is characterized by the sudden failure of one or more pillars and an associated release of kinetic energy. Although the geologic conditions surrounding coal bumps are often similar, their occurrence and magnitude are difficult to predict. This paper presents the development of an approach to assess the potential for coal bumps in room and pillar mines through the use of energy concepts and special consideration of the interface properties between the coal and overlying rock. Back analyses were performed on the widespread collapse of a room and pillar mine with an associated 3.9 local magnitude seismic event. Pillar and mine-scale models were constructed using the distinct element method to simulate the mining stages leading up to the collapse. A variety of loading conditions, material properties, and interface properties were evaluated for their effect on unstable failure of single pillars, and the mine-scale model was used to study the evolution of failure during progressive mining. The extent of unstable failure was quantified in these models by calculating the total kinetic energy released during each mining stage. Through the parametric analysis of single pillar models, it was found that softening parameters in either the coal or the coal/rock interface can individually facilitate unstable failure of pillars, but the combination of the two in a single model produced a much higher release of energy during failure. The results of the mine-scale model further illustrated the trend as the combination of softening parameters in the coal and coal/rock interface produced a series of failures which most accurately reflected the collapse event at the mine. The method of room and pillar stability analysis demonstrated in this study effectively explores the potential for large coal bumps. INTRODUCTION The analysis of coal pillar behavior is challenging because natural variability in geologic conditions requires estimation of material strengths and predicted loads for a given mining situation. Large width-to-height (w/h) ratio pillars and deep overburden present an additional challenge, as the failure behavior of such pillars is more complex and may involve unstable, sudden collapse. Empirical methods have improved the success of coal pillar design for a wide range of conditions, but for deep cover and squat pillar geometries, less accuracy has been achieved in predicting pillar performance (Mark 2000). As with any empirical approach, more back analysis and the consideration of new variables may help improve understanding and accuracy of future designs. This paper presents a study of pillar stability through the back analysis of the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse, which occurred in August of 2007. Pillar-scale models are utilized for the calibration of material properties and assessment of potential instability under varying conditions, and mine-scale models are constructed in an attempt to reproduce widespread failure and correlate with observations at the mine. Special consideration is given to the properties of the coal and the coal/rock interface, and kinetic energy is calculated throughout the course of the simulations to gauge the level of instability when pillar failure occurs. Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks for extracting high-level features from image data. In the present study, a soft sensor is proposed for the prediction of the flotation performance through froth features generated by the use of pre-trained convolutional neural networks. Several state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks (AlexNet, GoogLeNet, VGGNet, ResNet, and SqueezeNet) pre-trained on the ImageNet database are used to predict the metallurgical performance of two flotation systems. The first case study is a batch copper flotation system video-captured over a wide range of process conditions. The second case study is an industrial coal flotation column equipped with a continuous video recording system. The pre-trained networks are used to extract features from the froth images, and these features are subsequently used to predict the flotation conditions and performance. The prediction results by the pre-trained algorithms were compared with the traditional image processing algorithms. This demonstrates the ability of the pre-trained structures to generalize to images outside the ImageNet database. GoogLeNet outperforms other network architectures and provides more accurate predictions of the flotation process behavior and performance.

Measurements of the settling rates and the rheological behaviour of heavy media formed of fine suspensions in water of each of magnetite, ferrosilicon, and galena have been made. For media ranging from 1.6 to 2.8 specific gravity the settling measurements gave initial settling rates of from 0.5 to 0.01 ?cm. 'Per minute for magnetite; from 4.0 to 0.8 cm. per minute for galena; and from 35 to 1.6 cm. 'Per minute for ferrosilicon. These measurements indicate the ?relative stability of the suspensions and should be helpful in establishing the useful specific gravity range for each medium. Measurements of the consistency of the media were made with a Fann Model 35 rotational viscometer. Aibnormal or non-Newtonian behaviour was observed in the case of each media, the apparent viscosity being dependent upon the rate of shear or the intensity of motion. Measurements were made over the rate of shear range of 10? to 1,000 reciprocal seconds. The apparent viscosities of the magnetite media ranged from 450 down to 4?0 centipoise at 2.30 specific gravity, and from 2,450 down to 700 centipoise at 2.80 specific gravity. In the case of the galena media, the variation was from 40, through a minimum of 6, to 10 centipoise at 2.20 specific gravity, and from 950, through a minimum of 180, to 450 centipoise at 3.6 specific gravity. The ferrosilicon suspensions exhibited apparent viscosities ranging from 42, through a minimum of 5.6, to 9 centipoise at 1.9 specific gravity, and from 160, though a minimum of 35, to 85 centipoise at 2.8 specific gravity. The dependency of apparent viscosity or consistency upon intensity of motion is considered to be of particular significance in applications of heavy media where the medium is in rapid motion.

Background- History The most significant change in mining since the late 1970?s has been the emergence of very large scale mining operations , which have been developed to ensure profitability with relatively low grade ores. These large tonnage operations have resulted in the development of larger unit sized machines in all operations of beneficiation, solid-liquid separation and dewatering. Often only a few flotation lines are installed and tonnages up to 25 ktpd and beyond are not uncommon. The increased throughputs have led to the development of circular, reactor type tank designs. The reactor cell system is the most up to date flotation cell design to utilise the principles of circular cell design. The Svedala DV mechanism was specially developed to suit the RCS machine giving good solids handling characteristics and excellent metallurgical performance. Development of UG2 ore type flotation equipment The equipment was developed and optimised by Svedala process from 1995. A higher energy specification was requested by industry. This amounted to 3kW/m3 for installed volume. Existing designs were at 1.5kW/m3. Hence various modifications were required to achieve the required power input. The first 50m3 machines were installed and developed at Impala Platinum?s UG2 circuit over a one year period. Once reliability and performance was achieved, over 300 large volume flotation cells were installed at Anglo Platinum and Lonmin operations as well. Pilot Plant Development The Impala Platinum High Energy pilot plant was commissioned in 2002 and had an installed power exceeding 5kW/m3. It was operated for over a year at the tailings dam booster station and was fundamental to the large scale scavenging plant design. All experience in overcoming mechanical and operational problems was applied in scale up design principles. A very robust mechanism was designed to accommodate the additional power input from installed motors, as well as the high SG (>1.5) of the feed source. The pilot plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.

The general problem of single-phase natural gas flow through porous media has been considered both by mathematical analysis and field experiments. Theoretical studies on the fluid dynamics of natural gas wells resulted in derivations of expressions which permit a ber-ter understanding of the flow mechanism for conditions under which Darcy's law is no longer valid. In applying these results to natural gas production and testing technology, special emphasis war placed on the study of low permeability, slowly stabilizing formations. These applications resulted in a method of predicting the performance coefficients of tight natural gas wells. The calculation of the performance coefficient requires the determination of the "test-index", pkh/µ, the drain- age radius, R, and the effective wellbore radius, rw. Methods for estimating these parameters from field data were also developed. Field data from 15 wells were collected and analyzed. The measured values of the performance coefficients were compared with the predicted values. This statistical evaluation gave a bias of 7.14 per cent and a standard deviation of 11.6 per cent. INTRODUCTION The performance of a natural gas well is determined by the physical properties of the reservoir rock, the extent and the geometry of the drainage area, the properties of the flowing fluid, and the conditions of pressure distribution within the drainage matrix. The relation between the quantity of gas delivered and the pressure drop within the reservoir is characteristic of the behavior of each well and is often referred to as the back-pressure behavior of the well. It is well established that for normal, single-phase gas wells the relationship between the gas delivery rates and the bottom-hole pressure take, in general, the form, Q = c(P3 8 -P2 1)n. ,.......(1) where C is the performance coefficient, and n is the exponent corresponding to the slope of the straight-line relationship between Q and (P2 s, — P2 l) plotted on logarithmic coordinates. The determination of a well's performance by the back-pressure behavior not only permits the production engineers to analyze many operating problems, but also provides necessary information useful and essential to predict the future development of the field.' Important engineering and production problems such as calculation of gas deliverability into a pipeline at a predetermined line pressure, design and analysis of gas-gathering lines, determinations of spacing and number of wells to be drilled during field development to meet future market or contract obligations, etc., all depend, at least in part, on the availability and use of reliable back-pressure curves.' Long range transport of pollutants, particularly of sulphur dioxide and the associated acidic precipitation, has received much attention in the press and in international discussion during the last few years. Studies revealing increasing acidity of lakes and the dying out of fish populations over broad regions of the eastern half of North America have created alarm. In this paper, I will not attempt a description of the acid rain phenomenon. For this r recommend the balanced treatment of the subject by Gene Likens et al (1979) in Scientific Americana For my purposes I accept that the problem is serious and direct my attention to exploring a solution. Ultimately, the key lies in the answer to the question; "What do we do with the enormous tonnages of pollution abatement byproducts, chiefly sulphur compounds, that would arise from pollution control?"' Little thought has been given to this most limiting factor to environmental clean-up. This is symptomatic of a basic flaw in the [philosphy] that under-ins environmental policy. Although this paper is to propose a solution to the abatement byproduct problem, the basic flaw - the firmly entrenched, universally adopted, 'polluter pays [philosphy] as it is currently [understood] - needs some comment.

The drilling and blasting process is the starting point of any aggregate or mining process. Many people refer to it as the “Primary Crusher” as it will always be more efficient to crush rock with explosives energy than it will be mechanical energy. It is the more efficient use of this energy that is addressed in this paper.

In this paper, we attempt to answer an often asked question, how can metal mining be compatible with the principles of sustainable development. Starting with the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," we make the case that mining is or should be sustainable, using examples of sustainable practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S primary copper producer. These examples cover the entire mining cycle starting with exploration, mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, closure and post-closure and post-mining land use. It is hoped that the presentation will challenge the mining industry to even greater innovation as future mineral development projects are planned.

The purpose of the following research, as originally planned, was to investigate the influence of temperature upon the plate¬amalgamation process. In order to consider the amalgamation process intelligently, it was first necessary to learn the nature of an amalgam. In the performance of this task it was found necessary to consult a large volume of literature and to perform experimental investigations. The conceptions of the nature of amalgams thus obtained have so important a bearing on the amalgamation-process as a whole, as well as upon the possible influences of temperature, that it was advisable to include them in the treatment of the subject. The broader title is therefore used, even though some features of the amalgamation process have been treated very briefly and others entirely omitted, there being nothing new to present regarding them and their development not required for a clear presentation of the matter in hand. I. HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION. Gold was one of the earliest metals known to man. Occurring in the metallic state, it could be picked up in nuggets or washed, as gold dust, front the sand and gravel of streams. Interesting descriptions of the processes employed in early times for the recovery of gold may be found in Pliny's Natural History and in the treatise by Agricola on ores and minerals. But little progress in the treatment of the ores of gold was possible until efficient -crushing machines were devised. Assessments of the stability performance of open pit highwalls have traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work have been reviewed and are generally endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on the observed trends in highwall strain data from the case histories presented.

This method was standardized after considerable experimentation5 on the nature of the fusion of coal ash and the various factors which affect its determination. Reduction in the recovery time required and improvements in safety during a longwall face move have compelled coal mine operators to examine and use pre-driven longwall recovery rooms. The recovery entry is developed at the longwall stop position and supported ahead of time so that the required combinations of standing and internal sup-ports can be installed before the longwall face approaches. A calibrated three-dimensional finite element model, developed in conjunction with an underground test area, provided the critical components and design principals for a comprehensive parametric study. The study indicates that vertical, horizontal, and shear stresses concentrated on the outby abutment pillar corner of the recovery room resulting in deformations in the immediate roof above the primary roof support anchorage level. The results of the numerical model and field site observations indicated that the combination of the internal bolting system and the standing concrete supports are critical for the successful and safe extraction of the longwall equipment. Cable supports installed at and angle over the pillars can help stabilize the disturbed zone above the adjacent fender and outby pillars, however; standing supports are required in most sedimentary roof conditions to increase stability and assure a safe longwall extraction.

"Study of gravity concentrates from the gold-recovery circuit of the Kambalda nickel mill has enabled an assessment to be made of the nature, relative abundance and compositional variability of platinum group element (PGE) minerals and other associated heavy minerals that are present in the Kambalda nickel deposits. The major platinum minerals are sperrylite, PtAs2, and nioncheite, (Pt. Pd, Ni)(Te, Bi)2, and the major palladium minerals are sudburvite, (Pd, Pt, Ni)(Sb, Te, Bi), stibiopalladinite, Pd6Sb2, and palladoarsenide, Pd2 (As, Sb), together with a palladium antimonide and a palladium arsenide that have not been fully characterized. Palladian melonites, which contain up to 10 wt% Pd, and palladian nickeline are also important PGE hosts. Sperrylite and sudburyite are by far the most abundant discrete minerals in the gravity concentrates.Gold occurs as argentian, cuprian and nickeloan—cuprian gold, and as the tellurides calaverite, petzite and auriferous hessite. Silver is present in petzite, hessite and volynskite. Other rare phases contained in the gravity concentrates include native bismuth, altaite, frohbergite, breithauptite, gersdorffite, parkerite, scheelite, tantalite, cassiterite, rutile, bunsenite, gahnite, barite and uvarovite.Descriptions of in-situ occurrences of PGE minerals at Kambalda are rare. Michenerite, PdBiTe, and testibiopalladite, PdSbTe, have been described from a telluride-rich quartz-carbonate vein that intersects massive sulphide ore in Lunnon Shoot. Moncheite has been observed in chalcopyrite-rich stringers, and sudburyite occurs as inclusions in nickeline in a quartz- carbonate veinlet. No discrete PGE minerals have been found within the massive and matrix ore zones in the Kambalda ore- shoots, and the geochemical distribution of PGE suggests that the formation of discrete PGE phases may be related to post- magmatic processes—in particular, metamorphic segregation of sulphides, and the interaction of the ore sulphides, containing PGE in solid solution, with younger hydrothermal fluids. This has led to local redistribution of the PGE, with concentration in footwall stringers and veins, and in reaction zones."

An electronic color-sorting machine was tested for recovering colorless glass concentrates from mixed glass products. The tests were made using glass recovered from unincinerated (raw) urban refuse and residues resulting from the incineration of refuse. The results of the study revealed that concentrates analyzing about 86 percent colorless glass could be recovered from mixed unincinerated glass containing 54 percent colorless glass material. Recovery of the colorless glass was about 62 percent. Color sorting the incinerated glass was somewhat more difficult. Multiple-stage processing was required to recover 59 percent of the colorless glass material in a product analyzing 89 percent colorless glass. The feed material analyzed 41 percent colorless glass.

Physiol. 252 (Cell Physiol. 21 ): C677-C683, 1987.-An electrooptical method was developed to quantify superoxide (02) release from single rat pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) during adherence to the bottom of a culture dish. This was done by measuring the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate at 550 nm from videorecorded images of individual cells. Temporal changes in cell optical density, which are proportional to the mass of diformazan produced, were calculated from videophotometric measurements of the change in light intensity over individual cells. Total diformazan produced increased 78 and 1263 with an increase in NBT from 0.5 to 1.0 and 2.0 mg/ml, respectively. Total diformazan produced and maximum rate of production among individual PAM varied two- to threefold providing strong evidence for heterogeneity in 02 production. Specific inhibition of 02 production by superoxide dismutase, iodoacetate, and chlorpromazine significantly reduced the total diformazan produced and maximum rate of diformazan production. Hydrogen peroxide was not involved in NBT reduction, since catalase alone did not significantly change diformazan production. This novel method to quantify 02 release from single PAM should be valuable in analyzing heterogeneity and single cell kinetics of O; production, in assessing the effects of exposure of cells to particulates on O; release, and in relating release to electrophysiological measurements.rat; nitro blue tetrazolium; macrophage heterogeneity; single cell kinetic PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria (24). This process involves ingestion as well as destruction of foreign matter. Phagocytosis is usually accompanied by a respiratory burst that increases cellular oxygen consumption and glucose metabolism in the hexose monophosphate shunt (7), which leads to the release of highly reactive oxygen metabolites at the surface of the · plasma membrane (6, 27). These agents have been implicated in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes (22), but have also been shown to be toxic and have been linked to cancer, emphysema, arthritis, diabetes, and other diseases (17, 22, 30). Toxic effects may be a result of either an abnormally low production of metabolites, resulting in damage to lung tissue by respirable bacteria and dusts, or an abnormally high production, resulting in direct damage to lung tissue by metabolites themselves."

In recent years there has been no loss of life from fires in the underground mines of the Lake Superior district, but numerous minor fires and several serious ones involving loss of property and production have occurred. The iron-ore-producing companies recognize that well-equipped mine rescue stations are a valuable asset against the ever-present ranger of mine fires or the possibility of hazardous atmospheric conditions underground. Prompt action by trained and properly equipped rescue teams is recognized as the prime essential in saving lives, property, and production when fires occur. To achieve this purpose, the mining companies have provided themselves with mine rescue equipment and maintain trained mine rescue crews. This circular describes how one progressive company has provided, maintained, and improved upon such protection for its underground iron-ore mines on the Marquette and Menominee iron ranges of Michigan's upper peninsula. SUMMARY The central mine rescue station of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Negaunee, Mich., has provided the company's mines with competent and well-equipped mine rescue teams. The new central mine rescue station at the Mather mine "B" shaft has the distinction of having underground training facilities provided as a part of the station. The company maintains the largest trained force in mine rescue in the Lake Superior district, and mine rescue training is employed as a part of the accident-and fire-prevention program. One of the most important results has been the promotion of closer cooperation and understanding between the management and the workmen. In addition to the service rendered to company mines, the station and its personnel have given assistance to others. The station and its equipment have also been used for training several nearby community volunteer fire departments. This mine rescue station and its personnel have been a dependable and valuable asset to the community in which it is located.
