The Mexican fluorspar industry is faced with and will face serious problems, some of their own making and others beyond their control. However, they still offer the most secure source of fluorspar for North American' consumers. Since 1975, even in light of declining markets, they have, increased then production capabilities' as shown in Table #1. In analyzing Table #1, we note that Compania Miners Rio Colorado has closed down due to their ore reserves being exhausted. Fluorita de Rio Verde expanded their acid grade fluorspar capacity in anticipation of additional North American business. Campania Miners Las Cuevas presumably increased capacity to meet their North American contractual commitments and to supply their own hydrofluoric acid plant (Fluorex) at Juarez, Mexico. Historically, the Mexican fluorspar industry has relied on the United States as the mainstay for their sales. As shown in Tables #2 and #3, the Mexican share of the United States market has moderately decreased. However, as noted in Table #4 the volume loss is substantial as explained below.

Minerals processing operations use a significant quantity of fossil carbon to provide energy and as reductant. Greenhouse gas emissions from the use of this fossil carbon contribute to the global increase in anthropogenic CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. In the spirit of fostering thinking about a step change in this situation, this paper explores opportunities for the use of sustainable carbon from biomass sources in a range of mineral processing operations. The exploration shows that many common processes are contenders for fossil carbon replacement and that feasible scientific research by minerals processing technologists would add to deeper understanding of the potential for a sustainable bio-carbon based industry. It is also shown that there are many dilemmas on the social, environmental and economic fronts to be solved before a biomass based industry could become a reality.

The pockets of high silica blue dust across the entire high grade hematite deposits in the Bailadila sector bothers the excavation activity due their iron content, which is higher than the threshold value specified by the Indian Bureau of Mines and the agony of stacking them separately due to their fragile & powdery nature. The physical nature of blue dust and its negligible alumina content makes these a potential source of hematite, which is a blessing in disguise. As most of the particles are in the form of an independent grain making it appropriately suitable feed for dry magnetic separation and thus the dry beneficiation has turned a bane into boon by enabling to produce concentrate either suitable for using as DSO or amenable for blending. The emphasis on carrying out dry beneficiation studies in the present context serves the purpose of mineral conservation, mitigates the issues of excavation and stacking as well as conservation of water resource. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot scale dry beneficiation studies carried out on blue dust of 48 – 60%Fe and Silica up to 30% at 25 Kg/hour to 400 Kg/hour, resulting in production of concentrate assaying 60 – 65%Fe. INTRODUCTION High silica blue dust (HSBD) is associated with Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) and is available in abundance in various pockets across the Iron ore body in the Bailadila region of Chhattisgarh state. High Silica Blue dust occurs in the form of free granular particles and also as friable lumps. The chemical quality of this falls under sub-grade category (45 – 55%Fe) and as per the guidelines of Indian Bureau of Mines, these are to be stacked and conserved as future resources of Iron if it can’t be utilized in the present circumstances. Due to its friable nature, stacking of HSBD is a challenge and it is also compounding the problem by polluting the air under high velocity wind conditions. Because of its physical nature and occurrence in pockets pose challenge to systematic mining. The existing processing set up of the operating mines is designed to treat either Direct Shipping ore (DSO) or Run-of-Mine (ROM) have grade >60% Fe. The present practice of beneficiating iron ore fines (<1 mm) comprise combination of two or more processes such as desliming, hydraulic classification, magnetic separation and flotation apart from requirement of grinding depending on liberation characteristics. The HSBD which is predominantly occur as free granular particles, is significantly low in its alumina content. This gives us an opportunity to utilize them by exploring a suitable beneficiation process so that the concentrate produced can be used as a sweetener for alumina rich iron ore/concentrate. Thus, in the present study, an attempt has been made to adopt dry high intensity magnetic separation technique to explore the amenability of the high silica blue dust for beneficiation.

Alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6] is one of the important nonbauxitic resources for aluminum in U.S.A. The major gangue material associated with a unite ore body is quartz. Experimental results indicate that oleic acid flotation of alunite is quite effective in upgrading the ore. The flotation chemistry of the alunite/oleate system has been investigated using various techniques such as: hallimond tube flotation response, measurement of adsorption density using I4C labeled oleated, electrokinetic measurements, infrared spectral studies, contact angle measurements and thermochemical measurements using an isothermal microcalorimeter. Alunite has been found to float readily with oleate in the pH range 4-10.5 and its flotation response is enhanced at higher temperatures. The PZC of alunite has been determined to be at pH 7.2 ± 0.15 which agrees with what would be predicted from solution chemistry and from the flotation response with physically adsorbed collectors. Infrared spectra show a specific peak in the range 1585-1600 cm-1 which has been attributed to the formation of an aluminum oleate surface species. Both adsorption density measurements and infrared spectra indicate that during adsorption multilayers are formed. The heat of adsorption of oleate on alunite has been found to be endothermic and of the order of 4-6 KJ/ mole.

THE Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co. is situated at Los Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, about 75 mi. (120.7 km.) South of the international boundary and about 7 mi. (11.26 kin.) east of the town of Nacozari de Garcia. It is situated at an elevation of 5000 ft. (1524 m.) in one of the northward trending ridges that form part of the mountain mass that culminates in the Sierra Madre de Mexico. To the east, south, and west, the topography is rugged and diversified; to the north less diversity exists, ranges of mountains rise sharply out of almost level ground and give the basin range structure characteristic of the southwest. The study is devoted to the earth's surface protection and is aimed at improving the ecological safety of the territories in the mining industry. Identification of the diagnostic signs and quantitative criteria for the disturbance of soil geochemical properties and water chemistry represent an important scientific task in anthropogenically disturbed landscapes in the context of comprehensive exploitation of mineral resources. The study is aimed at geological and ecological analysis of the migration peculiarities of the man-caused chemicals and elements in soils and soil-surface water environment. We received new results. These results assist in estimating the peculiar features of distribution of heavy metals total and mobile forms (Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb), depending on the physical and chemical parameters of the disturbed soils. We obtained the empirical relationships describing heavy metals localization and accumulation processes depending on buffer properties of soils (pH, N, Corg), salinization factor and contamination with oil products. Anthropogenic geochemical barriers spontaneously formed in the area of industrial facilities were revealed in the territories of industrial facilities. These barriers prevent the further distribution of elements and pollutants in the landscapes. This makes it possible to create their artificial analogues in order to limit further migration of pollutants and to immobilize valuable components. Analysis of diagnostic features of soils geoecological state and factors influencing the distribution of heavy metals in the soil-surface water geosystem allows the identification of the geochemical barrier type with the aim of elements immobilization in a limited area of the territory. We applied modern physical and chemical methods of analysis, a package of statistics programs in Excel and modeling techniques. The proposed approach is innovative and therefore can be attractive. The accumulation of useful components losses in mineral resources exploitation is a promising reserve for their recovery from the soil with specifically arranged properties. The methodology of this research is also promising for the prediction of the environmental emergencies of the anthropogenic nature. This is consistent with the requirements of state control of environmental safety in the course of comprehensive exploitation of mineral resources.

Australia contains some of the most productive mining areas and is characterised by ancient landscapes and highly variable hydrology. Historical mining of iron ore, coal and other minerals has targeted ore deposits located above water tables, and elevated above creek lines where possible to reduce cost. The downturn in mining caused by falling ore prices over recent years has triggered a drive to reduce cost, maximise yield and delay capital expenditure associated with opening new mines. So as the ore deposits with more favorable mining conditions become depleted there is an increased focus on mining ore associated with valley floors and creek lines. This is demonstrated by a regional assessment of the extent of Channel Iron Deposits (CID) and Iron Ore (Fe) Mines and Deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia (Figure 1). A large proportion of these mines are, or plan to, target high grade CID ore associated with existing creek systems. Figure 2 shows outcropping and inferred sub-cropping CID extents, which suggests there are vast quantities of CID ore deposits throughout the Pilbara Region, intersected by major creeks which could be mined at some point in the future using creek diversions (Atkinson et al., 2017). A similar picture could also be produced for coal mining in Queensland, particularly in areas such as the Bowen Basin.While creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of these orebodies and extend the life of mine, creek diversions can involve substantial financial, social, environmental and regulatory risks that need to be carefully managed (Markham et al., 2017, Atkinson et al., 2017). This paper discusses the key issues and opportunities associated with diversion decision making. It highlights the importance of using a well-structured assessment methodology that allows key stakeholders to be part of the assessment process and is complementary to material presented in Atkinson et al., (2017). Design considerations for operational and closure designs are presented, as well as mine planning considerations, risks, cost saving opportunities and the benefits of an integrated approach to design. Significant changes in the markets for coal have taken place since World War II, As used in this study the term ?coal? will refer to bituminous coal, The anthracite industry in size, characteristics, and problems differs materially from the bituminous coal industry, These changes have both influenced and been influenced by the mechanization of mines, and by decreased distribution costs, especially in transportation. It is the purpose of this paper to examine these post-war changes, to assess their impact upon the production and distribution of coal, and to explore future market developments in the light of past and present trends and relationships. The layman lacks adequate informatian on the production, demand, and distribution of coal. There are two reasons for this. First, there is a relative lack of statistics coveting the industry, Coal operators and distributors are not required to file with any government agency the type of much more complete statistics filed by the railroads and public utilities with national and State agencies. The Bureau of Mines assembles much useful information on the coal industry, but several areas, including that of investment and finance, have no central depository which can be used to keep the public informed of the nature and extent of the industry and its problems.

A thermal upgrading process by which nickel value can be concentrated in a ferronickel alloy is a possible alternative to treat Sudbury pyrrhotite (Po) tailings with nickel content of 0.5–1.5 wt%. The basis of this process is precipitation of Ni from Po at high temperature once Fe/S ratio in the iron-deficient Po is shifted towards stoichiometric or near stoichiometric FeS (troilite) either by the addition of iron and/or the removal of sulfur. For the iron addition route, the reaction between elemental iron and nickeliferous pyrrhotite to produce ferronickel alloy and Ni-depleted iron sulfide phase plays a critical rule. In this paper, the formation mechanism of ferronickel alloy was investigated using the diffusion couple technique to better understand the nickel diffusion behavior in the iron and sulfide phases.

Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona, USA, is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures exceeding 80¦C in rock with high crystalline silica content, resulting in a very challenging ventilation and cooling system design. This is one of the largest copper orebodies ever found and, with a planned rock production rate of 120 kton/day. The project is currently in its prefeasibility phase and the paper discusses features of the ventilation and cooling system design which includes multiple ventilation shafts with total primary ventilation flow of about 3000 m3/s and both surface and underground refrigeration plants producing more than 140 MW refrigeration capacity. The cooling system features large surface bulk air coolers chilling all downcast air supplemented by an underground secondary air cooler system and a chilled service water system. This will be a very challenging mine to ventilate and cool but this work has demonstrated that it will be technically achievable with the application of existing technology.CITATION:Bluhm, S, Moreby, R G, von Glehn, F and Pascoe, C, 2013. This report is a compilation of results of preliminary concentration tests of seven manganese-ore samples. Six of the seven samples were submitted through the Mining Division, and 1 from Mexico was submitted by H. A. Doerner, formerly chief metallurgist, Region III. These investigations were made to assist development of mineral resources and particularly to aid economical exploitation of marginal or complex ores, from which strategic or critical minerals may be recovered.

The semi-autogenous grinding mill is the bottleneck whenever treating hard and finely fragmented ore at Benguet Corporation&apos;s Kaline Concentrator. Low milling rates result from very high and fluctuating mill power draw. Attempts to use a mill horsepower control loop to regulate feed rate were unsuccessful because of operational upsets caused by fluctuations in feed rate on downstream operations. The objective of the computer control was to maximize tonnage throughput by stabilizing the power draw at a high but safe level without upsetting subsequent operations. The semi-autogenous mill is operated in closed circuit with a stationary screen. Instrumentation consists of a feed weightometer, a power transmitter to measure mill load, a headwater flowmeter and an ultrasonic level sensor to measure the mill discharge sump level. A 64 k-byte FOX-3 Foxboro computer processes field data from various sensors and manipulates the input control variables. These variables are the fresh feed rate and the headwater flowrate. Feed rate is controlled through a supervisor-type computer program aimed at maximizing and stabilizing power draw. The control scheme was according to how the operators responded during an operator-directed automatic control mode. Mill dilution is similarly controlled. Results achieved reflect a 3% increase in tonnage milled because of the reduction in control variability that ensued.

LIX63 in combination with DNNS selectively extracts nickel and/or cobalt from acidic leach liquors with pH values as low as 1.0. Nickel/cobalt and cobalt/nickel selectivities are achieved by varying the relative concentrations of LIX63 and DNNS. Increasing LIX63 concentration retards both extraction and strip-ping rates while DNNS has the opposite effect. Slope analyses of equilibrium data indicate that both LIX63 and DNNS are present in the extracted complexes. Examples of possible flowsheets are presented.

"The pressure oxidation of sulfide minerals at temperatures above 200°C enables the extraction of base metals, improves the extractability of gold from refractory ores, enables solubilisation of PGEs and can be used to hydrothermally upgrade base metal-containing feeds. Fundamental studies reveal that the solution chemistry (and mineralogy of the solids) during pressure oxidation can be manipulated with outcomes that include (1) increased leaching rates, (2) lower oxygen requirements and (3) the formation of chemically more stable residues. This paper presents examples describing how these outcomes might be achieved based upon fundamental investigations.INTRODUCTION The application of pressure oxidation to the processing of gold ores and concentrates dates back several decades and continues to be the process of choice at operations such as Pueblo Viejo (pyritic gold) which host the largest autoclave of its kind in the world (Barrick Gold Corporation, 2016). Commercial application to the processing of base metals and PGMs resides with long established processes such as the Sherritt process, ore specific applications such as by Noril’sk, at Sepon etc. or has not proceeded to date beyond pilot scale testing (e.g. Phelps Dodge, CESL, Activox, Platsol). Recently there has been significant interest in hydrothermal upgrading options for concentrates including the NONOX and Toowong processes (Rohner et al., 2016; Weidenbach et al., 2016). The latter options suggest directions where sound knowledge of the underlying fundamentals enables novel outcomes and efficiencies to be obtained. It comes as no surprise that investigations similar to those underpinning these developing processes can be traced back several decades. It is not the subject of this paper to provide a historical perspective of the relevant autoclave chemistries but rather, to present some potential opportunities suggested by studies in our laboratories. Topics to be discussed in this paper include (1) control of metal extraction rates, (2) control of iron-residue composition and (3) control of sulfur oxidation and hence acid generation and oxygen requirements. The work described will focus upon the pressure oxidation of a nickel concentrate."

I. INTRODUCTION Lawyers are a cautious breed; and it might be expected that a paper concerning a broad and complex area of legal regulation, prepared by lawyers for presentation to a predominantly non-legal audience, would commence with several caveats. Ours are the following: First, we have written a broad (and, in some instances, simplified) overview of the regulatory system and of some of the more important requirements generally applicable to uranium mine and mill wastes in the United States. Our paper is not a legal opinion setting forth all of the governmental requirements that would have to be met by any particular mine or mill. Similarly, we do not imply that the requirements we mention are necessarily applicable to each and every mine and mill in the country; depending on the facts, some of the requirements may be inapplicable or avoidable through exemption or variance proceedings. Compliance decisions and strategies for particular facilities must be considered on a site-specific basis. Second, we have undertaken merely to describe the regulatory framework and some of the generally "applicable" requirements which have been promulgated and proposed by administrative agencies. We express no opinion on whether, under the U.S. Constitution and statutes, the existing and proposed agency regulations are valid in general or as applied to any particular mining or milling operation. There are, of course, procedures for judicial review of agency action; and newly promulgated environmental regulations have frequently been challenged, with varying degrees of success, before the courts. For us even to begin to consider such issues would expand an already forbiddingly long paper to totally unmanageable proportions. Third, in light of the subject of this Conference we have limited our paper to the legal framework and requirements applicable to uranium mine and mill "wastes" -- primarily mine overburden and waste rock and mill tailings (including waste tailings solution). We treat operating discharges (e.g., emissions from yellowcake drying) only peripherally. ArcelorMittal Prijedor is a goethitic iron ore mine located in the north-west of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which mainly supplies ArcelorMittal’s European subsidiaries. Annual production of the asset stands at the level of 1.5–2.1 million tons of iron ore product which is sent to ArcelorMittal Zenica steelmaking plant. Two types of products with approximately 50 per cent Fe are generated in Prijedor through a process composed by crushing, screening, and magnetic separation stages. Within this process one of the tailings produced is called ‘ultrafines’. The ‘ultrafines’ product corresponds to the desliming hydrocyclones overflow in Prijedor plant, which is classified in a size fraction below 25 μm and corresponds to about 5 per cent of feed. This material is richer in iron than the coarser size fractions of the ore but do not present a good performance in concentration processes. In this way, several studies have been carried out during the last years to find solutions to use the ‘ultrafines’ material without success. In this context, the possibility of dehydroxylate the goethite contained in the material transforming the mineral into hematite and thus increasing the iron grade of the final product was investigated. During the research, several dehydroxylation tests with different temperatures and time of exposure were performed. Using dihydroxylation process at temperatures higher than 800°C it was possible to produce a material with 43 per cent Fe from the original 39 per cent Fe ‘ultrafines’ sample. In addition, the dehydroxylation tests confirmed that goethite becomes completely transformed into hematite at 400°C (with an exposure time of 60 mins) and material is completely sintered at 1200°C. A simulation study based on dehydroxylation tests results showed that it would be possible to use a ‘ultrafines’ product with Fe grade higher than 45 per cent to produce a material with 50 per cent Fe through a complete dehydroxylation process.

The objectives of this study were to document the hydrologic impacts of longwall mining on streams, identify the factors affecting the extent of stream dewatering, and develop empirical trends to predict the extent of dewatering and recovery of streams in advance of mining. This study on stream impacts is a companion to a stud; conducted on ground water impacts from longwall mining, which was done as part of the same research project at the&apos; same locations and times. The study areas are three mine sites in north- central West Virginia. Mine A, located in Upshur County, has relatively thin mine overburden under the valley streams (105-115 feet). Stream monitoring there continued the earlier work of Cifelli and Rauch (1). Stream dewatering was severe with streams often going dry over the longwall panels during baseflow conditions. The lost water was probably flowing to the mine. Dewatering began in streams over the mine entry areas adjacent to the panels and as much as 380 feet from the nearest panel edge. The angles of dewatering influence ranged 22 to 72 degrees with respect to the nearest mined panel edge. Discharge then typically increased as the streams- flowed across the panel edge, but then decreased again over the panels. These streams were often ponded by local reversals in hydraulic gradient caused by land subsidence, and often dried up after flowing a few hundred feet across the panels. This occurred over panels that were previously mined up to eight months before. Mine B, located in Monongalia County, has relatively thick mine overburden (475-485 - feet) under the major stream. Stream dewatering was severe there during warm season baseflows, with complete dewatering occurring then over the longwall panels. This dewatering occurred over mined panels up to five years old, probably in response to a major anticlinal axis lineament and fracture zone in the stream valley. Mine C. located on the West Virginia -Pennsylvania border, has relatively thick mine overburden (about 585-630 feet) under the monitored streams there. stream dewatering was only partial, and these streams typically recovered their lost discharge downstream of the mine, indicating that lost water was not recharging to the mine. Only longwall panels less than one year old were associated with stream dewatering.

Metallurgical accounting is key to the control and production planning process of any mining operation. This is even more crucial for complex operations involving mining, concentration, smelting, refining and marketing. The tracking of multiple metal product and contaminant components through the operation can improve process predictability and inventory management. Appropriate use can be made of æhigh quality dataÆ for strategic reserve utilisation, mining operations, milling operations, etc. This information enables the optimisation of all aspects of the mining and processing operations. This case study discusses a metal balance implementation for WMCÆs Olympic Dam operations; a large integrated mining, concentration and refining operation, which used an existing off the shelf statistical data reconciliation package developed for the oil industry. It was extended to track and balance the metal co-products across the entire integrated mining, mineral processing and refining plant. The key benefits discussed are tight integration with existing data collection systems, formalisation of previously informal processes, and leveraging the development and support available for a widely used package. The project provided a solution for the site metallurgical balance spanning the mine and processing plant. The solution facilitates a bridge between the planning and production worlds, using a common data model across the site.

The economics of pellet plant operation, in terms of fuel and power consumption, flexibility in the selection of the cheapest fuel source, system availability, maintenance costs, and the simplicity of process design, contribute to the determination of building and profitably operating a pellet plant. Design innovations, sup- ported by actual field data, have been initiated into the GRATE-KILN System design to positively address these factors. This paper presents the recent state of the art design concepts which have helped the GRATE- KILN System assume worldwide acceptance status.

Porphyry copper deposits are the most important source of copper and also gold within the orogenic belts. These deposits are characterized by low grade copper ore (0.2% to 1% copper) and host precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. A characterization tool has been developed for complex porphyry type copper-gold deposits with an aim to quantify copper and precious metal deportment. This quantification is a challenging task due to low grades and also due to the presence of both visible and invisible precious metal content in different sulphide and non-sulphide phases. Studies were initiated on various complex, ore deposits and also on samples representing various processing streams such as flotation and leach products. This paper presents the development of a systematic approach to diagnostic metallurgy using state-of-the-art optical and automated mineralogy, micro-probe, dynamic SIMS and TOF-SIMS analysis for quantification of invisible and visible precious metals content in various species. The relevance of this characterization to metallurgy will also be briefly discussed in this paper.
