In this study, the oxidation of low-grade pyrolusite to potassium manganate in alkaline solutions under O2 pressure has been investigated. The effects of different conditions on the high-grade and low-grade pyrolusite leaching process were investigated based on thermodynamic calculation, as well as the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of the low-grade pyrolusite during the leaching process. The results showed that the manganese conversion rates of the two types of pyrolusite were almost the same, and reaching 99% for high-grade pyrolusite and 96% for low-grade pyrolusite under optimal conditions. The optimum condition for low-grade pyrolusite sample JM-2 was achieved as 0.5 MPa of the oxygen partial pressure, 55% of KOH, 14 of the initial alkali-manganese ratio, and ≤ 48 μm of the mineral granularity at 260 °C within 150 min of leaching time and 500 rpm. In alkaline leaching of low-grade pyrolusite, Mn(IV) was oxidized into Mn(VI). The particles changed from large particles to flakes and finally formed crystals. Finally, the shrinking core model was used to fully describe the leaching kinetics of the manganese. It was demonstrated that the leaching of manganese was controlled by the chemical surface reactions and the activation energy which equals 115.9121 kJ/mol.

Relationships that may exist between assays and sample interval lengths when using unequal sample intervals in mine sampling have been investigated as part of the larger research problem of adapting statistical methods to the analysis of weighted average grades. The theoretical relationship between the amount of difference in the weighted and unweighted average grade of ore and the size of the correlation coefficient between assay value and sample interval length was found to be linear. Numerous examples of actual field sample and assay data, which have been obtained by using unequal sample intervals, are documented, and the differences between weighted and unweighted average grades of ore and the correlation coefficients between assays and sample interval lengths have been computed and plotted on graphs. Differences between these actual field data and the expected theoretical linear relationship are examined. It is hypothesized that the use of unequal sample intervals in mine sampling is, in fact, stratified sampling in a statistical context. The sampler establishes stratification by selecting unequal sample intervals on the basis of differences in lithology, changes in rock type, characteristics of mineralization, or differences in metal content. Statistically} methods currently used in mine sampling, involving unequal sample intervals, fail to consider differences in the inherent variances in grade of ore within the various strata established by using unequal sample intervals. Consequently the strata are sampled with different precision. This difference in precision of sampling between strata may account for much of the deviation between the plotted points representing actual field sampling data and the theoretical linear relationship between the amount of the difference between weighted and unweighted average grade of ore and the size of correlation coefficient between assays and sample interval lengths.

The by-product molybdenite technology in Chile is reviewed. Flowsheets, reagents and some operation features for the actual six Chilean moly plants(Chuquicamata, El Teniente, El Salvador, Andina, Las Tortolas and Pelambres), are presented. The chemical and physicochemical factors involved in the depression of copper and iron sulfides during the selective flotation of molybdenite, with sodium sulfide, sodium sulfhydrate, anamol-D and LR-744, are discussed. Advances in technology to solve problems of excess of lime (precipitation with sulfuric acid); excess of residual flotation reagents (activated carbon and kerosene); and optimization of depressant consumption (Eh control, nitrogen and low-oxygen air), are discussed.

A importância do desenvolvimento sustentável, tendo como base um ambiente saudável para as gerações futuras, leva a se pensar em como as organizações poderiam desenvolver materiais menos danosos ao ambiente com boas propriedades e pelo menor custo. A proposta de aproveitamento de fibras vegetais para utilização em desenvolvimento de compósitos de matriz polimérica reforçados pelas mesmas é a motivação da pesquisa visando obter um compósito com melhores propriedades mecânicas e químicas do que sua matéria prima. Por virtude da importância do desenvolvimento desses materiais, a caracterização mecânica da fibra, da matriz e, finalmente, do compósito através de ensaios destrutivos e não destrutivos é fundamental para estudo de sua aplicação. Após a obtenção dos dados, percebeu-se que a adição das fibras melhorou as propriedades mecânicas do compósito resultante. Mostrando, portanto, resultados promissores para o desenvolvimento desses materiais, promovendo assim um material mais barato e de melhor propriedade mecânica, além de uma alta leveza. Em suma, os resultados estão de acordo com o esperado, impulsionando assim um melhor estudo desses materiais, por exemplo, realizando outros ensaios, como ensaios de impacto.

The Bureau of Mines investigated molten salt electrorefining 'n helium atmosphere cells as a means for the production of ductile vanadium. 'Electrolytes composed of NaCl-VCl2, LiCl-NaCl-VCl2, BaCl2-KCl-NaCl-VCl2 KCl-LiCl-VCl2, and CaCl2-NaCl-VCl2 were tested. Two electrolytes, KCl-LiCl-VCl2 and CaCl2-NaCl-VC12, were selected for laboratory-scale production tests. A molten salt electrorefining process was developed for the production of ductile 99.6 percent vanadium from a commercial 90-percent grade. Using the CaCl2-NaCl-VC12 electrolyte, an 87-percent recovery of ductile vanadium was made; an 85-percent recovery was made with the KCl-LiCl-VCl2 electrolyte.

"The pastefill circuit at the Bell Allard Mine in Matagami, Quebec started up in August 1999. The surface pastefill plant produces a cemented paste which is sent underground by gravity through a vertical pipeline in the mine ventilation shaft. Difficulties with paste flow during the start-up highlighted the importance of understanding paste rheology and the effect of operating procedures on line wear. By June 2000, the original circuit had been modified to include a paste pump to transport the paste to the shaft.The steps taken during the paste plant commissioning are discussed. The final flow sheet is presented, focussing on the use of instrumentation to ensure full column flow and proper distribution underground. Resistance modelling and accelerated curing of samples are examined as possible ways of predicting paste resistance to ensure compliance with the mine’s paste specifications.INTRODUCTIONCommissioning a new plant can be difficult and time consuming. The start-up of Noranda’s Bell Allard paste backfill plant was no exception. Since the first day it went into operation, the paste circuit could not meet the tonnage and paste quality requirements of the mine because the paste would not flow by gravity into the vertical pipeline in the mine’s ventilation shaft.Diagnosis of the pastefill problems proved difficult. It was only when the rheology of the Bell Allard paste was understood that the flow problems were solved. To ensure that the paste placed in the stopes meets mine requirements, two methods of paste resistance prediction are being developed."

"IntroductionThis paper presents an overview of the industry status, describes current potash industry practices at three mills, and summarizes developments that have taken place since the previous review by Banks (1985).The commodity potash is produced in both New Brunswick and Saskatchewan from the evaporite ore sylvinite. This ore is a mixture of co-crystallized halite, NaCl, and sylvite, KCl, and a minor assortment of silica, carbonate, sulphate, and clay minerals. Carnallite, KMgCl3.6H20, is also dispersed throughout the bedded deposits and can affect the recovery of sylvite for fertilizer and industrial uses.Canada continues to be a principal source of supply of agricultural and industrial potash products. Figure 1 shows the sector performance between 1989 and 1997 in the context of the world supply and demand situation as reported by Prud'homme (1997) of Natural Resources Canada.Potash industry output is traditionally measured as the quantity of potassium nutrient and reported as tonnes ofK20. Mineralogically, the principal form of potash produced in Canada is sylvite, KCl, and 1 nutrient tonne K20 corresponds to approximately 1.64 tonnes of sylvite of agricultural grade, about 95% KCI. In 1997, the Canadian industry milling capacity was 13.4 million metric tons (Mt) ofK20 (22 Mt KCl) while the actual production was 9.0 Mt K20 (14.8 Mt KCl). Worldwide milling capacity in 1997 was 35.9 Mt K20 (58.8 Mt KCl) and global consumption was 25.3 Mt K20 (41.6 Mt KCl). Canadian producers can deliver about 35% of the global demand for potash commodities"

"Damaging seismicity associated with deep faulting in both mining and civil excavations not infrequently occurs without warning, and often before proper mitigation measures have been put into place. Severe squeezing is also a common problem for excavating through deep major faults. While both problematic conditions are difficult to predict and characterize, there is often a need at pre-feasibility and feasibility level to more reliably estimate the possible level of risk posed by such geologic structures. This paper introduces some structural geologic techniques that have potential application for both mining and civil applications for aiding forewarning of the extent of these types of problem.INTRODUCTIONEncountering adverse faulting at depth in deep excavations, whether for mining or civil purposes can create serious economic and safety impacts. For deep mines or for deep tunnel projects, measures are available for aiding prediction of the extent of possible influence that large scale faults could create, but these techniques are rarely if ever applied as part of routine site investigation programs, or even as part of risk assessment evaluations. Several well established structural geologic methods of palao-history reconstruction have potential application for aiding forewarning of the extent of these types of potential problem by allowing estimates to be made of:• controlling stress orientations that might engender reactivation movement;• principal stress magnitudes that could lead to failure initiation, and• probable mechanisms of fault deformation - brittle (bursting) or plastic (squeezing).This paper explores several structural geological and rockmass characterization techniques that have application for unravelling fault structure of importance to deep engineering projects. Their application for mining or tunnelling purposes is advocated in conjunction with conventional rockmass characterization assessment approaches using GSI, RMR and/or Q to aid early recognition and definition of potential adverse ground condition behaviour associated with intersection of significant faulting at depth."

An accurate assessment of the vertical stress on a coal seam at depth is important for mine design. Vertical stress calculation techniques presently available either are not sufficiently accurate or cannot handle complex surface topography. Therefore, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a computerized method to calculate vertical stress exerted on surfaces at depth that includes the effect of topography. Two input data sets are required: a digital elevation model containing topographic elevations and a coal seam file defining coal seam elevations at depth. Boussinesq's equation then quantifies the vertical stress resulting from topography. The computerized method was tested on a coal seam overlain by a complex topography where a vertical stress map encompassing several square miles was produced. Results show that depth mitigates the affects of surface topography, while the coal seam topography has a direct effect on the vertical stress. In comparison to the computerized method, the direct stress method overestimates stress under hills and underestimates stress under valleys. The largest difference between the two methods occurs under the steepest topographic relief. A limitation of the computerized method is that stresses cannot be accurately determined near an outcrop.

The purpose of the research is to explore this novel foundation method, which involves the installation of closely spaced piles in a perimeter arrangement with a body of soil enclosed in the centre. "NIOSH recently completed a 15-month study at an underground limestone mine crusher booth which evaluated three research parameters: (1) the effectiveness of a single-filter filtration and pressurization system for improving the air quality inside the operator booth, (2) comparing the effectiveness of ? > 99 and ? > 95 experimental prototype filters in the system, and (3) evaluating the use of three different pressure monitoring devices to determine the performance of the filtration and pressurization system over time. The protection factor was quantified monthly using particle counters in the respirable dust range (0.3–10 µm), and gravimetric dust samples were gathered at the beginning and end of the overall study. Under static conditions and after outlier removal, the single-filter filtration unit installed offered a protection factor between 8 and 216, depending on the filter type and loading condition. The particle counting analysis shows that the ? > 95 filter offers a protection factor greater than 4-times that of the ? > 99 filter when evaluated over 60 minutes. The booth pressure monitors provided data that proved to be a valid indicator of system performance over time. INTRODUCTION Designed and installed correctly, enclosed cabs, operator booths and control rooms offer mine workers protection from physical hazards, such as flying rock, debris, and noise, as well as a more comfortable environment in regards to temperature and humidity [1]. But while it may be easier to quantify whether the A/C unit is working (measuring the temperature) or observe whether the cab offers protection from flying debris, it can be somewhat more difficult to quantify its performance in reducing respirable dust hazards. For over 15 years, NIOSH has been conducting applied research to improve the air quality inside of enclosed cabs of mobile equipment [2-5]. This work has led to the identification and mathematical modeling of enclosed cab filtration systems [6]. The same principles that govern the performance of filtration systems on mobile equipment are applicable to stationary enclosures such as operator booths and control rooms [1, 7]. Stationary enclosures are similar to enclosed cabs; however, the volume of the work area can be significantly larger. In addition, workers who perform their duties in stationary enclosures tend to stay within the room for a greater percentage of the day, as opposed to workers on mobile equipment who may enter and exit frequently. Structural integrity can be easier to maintain as well, as there is typically less vibration and stress placed on these compartments as compared to mobile equipment. In addition to offering protection from dust and flying debris, enclosures must ensure that workers have a healthy supply of fresh air to avoid elevated levels of CO2, which are known to cause headache and dizziness, impairing cognitive function. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) states that enclosures should have no more than 1,100 ppm of CO2 when outside levels are 400 ppm [8]. In addition, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ASABE) recommends a minimum airflow for enclosed cabs of at least 42.5 m3/hr (25.0 cfm) per person [9] to ensure an acceptable level of CO2."

The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) recommends that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of spoil material on reclaimed surfaces should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate efficient tree root growth. However, the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose spoil material could cause instability. Successful application of the FRA on the flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine site are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor any type of slope movement. Quarterly surveying of the monuments were done to quantify slope movement, either horizontally or vertically. The methodology developed in this research for field slope movement monitoring was validated using computer model results. Analytical models based on the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and numerical models based on the finite element method (FEM) were developed for slope stability analysis. The LEM analysis was done using the Geo-Slope/W program following the simplified Bishop method. However, numerical models were developed using the PLAXIS computer program following the Mohr’s Coulomb failure criterion and strength reduction technique. The slope stability analysis was performed for two different scenarios: first with the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose graded spoil material and second without top loose graded spoil material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems, due to 1.22 m (4 ft) loose graded spoil that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes.

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that utilizes gravitational force for mining massive, steeply dipping, and deep-seated ore deposits at a lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. Since caving is a dynamic process, the design of an effective ventilation system is a challenging task, and therefore, estimation of airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. The complex and dynamic nature of caving also makes it difficult to predict the airflow resistance by using traditional approaches. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

As environmental laws and regulations become more complex and the economic cost of non-compliance becomes greater, periodic assessment of environmental compliance, identification of potential liability and implementation of any necessary remedial action should be a standard part of the operational methods of any successful business. The title of this paper "Environmental Audits, A Shield, A Sword or A Trojan Horse?" is intended to draw attention to the fact that environmental audits can be used positively to shield a business operations from actual or potential environmental liability; can be used proactively as a 'sword" in both a marketing context ("do business with us because we conduct our business safely and professionally?) and as a mechanism for developing positive relationships with environmental regulators; and, used negatively, as a "Trojan horse", by developing information which those same environmental regulators (or the public) use in an enforcement context against your business or that of your clients. This paper will discuss the concept of environmental audits in general; the pros and cons of conducting the same; and the role of the attorney, as part of the "audit" team, to insure, to the greatest extent possible, that the audit process is productive from both a managerial and legal perspective.

Effects due to some metal cations, such as Ca2+, Mg2+,Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Al3+ etc., which are produced in the pulp when the complicated ore is dipped in the deioned water, on the flotation of chalcopyrite and galena with the isopropyl thionocarbamate as collector have been studied. It is found that chalcopyrite floatability is not influenced by these cations, and the cations can be di-vided into three types according to their effects on the purified galena?s floatability with the same conditions, as activator such as Cu+; as depressant such as Al3+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ , unaffective such as Mg2+ and Ca2+.

Os ganhos adquiridos nesta nova condição de processo vão desde o aumento da recuperação mássica (de 90 a 95 para 100%), menor investimento no Capex e Opex, além dos ganhos na área ambiental como a eliminação da água na rota do processo e das barragens de rejeitos com consequente facilidade na obtenção do licenciamento ambiental. Sublimation of ZrCl4 is important for the production of nuclear grade metallic Zr in Kroll’s process. The sublimation kinetics of ZrCl4 was investigated by TGA under both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. The sublimation rate of ZrCl4 increased with increasing temperature under isothermal conditions. ZrCl4 sublimation was confirmed to be a zero-order process under isothermal conditions, whereas it was first-order kinetics under non-isothermal conditions. The activation energy of ZrCl4 sublimation under isothermal conditions was 21.7 kJ/mol. The activation energy for non-isothermal sublimation was 101.4 kJ/mol and 108.1 kJ/mol with the Kissinger method and Flynn- Wall-Ozawa method, respectively. These non-isothermal activation energies were very close to the heat of sublimation (103.3 kJ/mol). Sublimation occurs by two elementary steps: surface reaction and desorption. Therefore, the overall activation energy of ZrCl4 sublimation is 104.8(±3.4) kJ/mol. The activation energy of the surface reaction and desorption steps are proposed to be 83.1 kJ/mol and 21.7 kJ/mol, respectively.

There have been major changes in the makeup and nature of the uranium exploration industry in recent years. Significant price increases precipitated an increase in exploration activity-according to the Department of Energy, exploratory drilling in 1977, by 140 companies, was almost 8 million m (26 million ft). This represents a 37% increase over the prior year's drilling. Projections for 1978 indicate at least 9 million m (30 million ft) of exploratory holes will be drilled in the US. Exploration expenditures in 1979, including land acquisition, drilling, and other costs, were estimated by DOE at over $236 million. Domestic expenditures for 1978 are estimated at over $250 million.
