This is a tutorial paper on industrially successful approaches for nonlinear process monitoring. Online process monitoring is essential to continuous operation of plants at high efficiency. The problem of process monitoring is one where an impending but undesirable process condition has to be identified and used to alert process engineers. This problem has traditionally been solved by practicing engineers using statistical techniques that detect a change in the underlying correlation structure of process variables. For linear correlation structures, algorithms such as principal components analysis, independent component analysis and partial least squares have been proposed. However, many industrial processes exhibit nonlinear correlation structure between the process variables. In this tutorial we describe various nonlinear monitoring techniques and elaborate on two recently developed methods, namely Support Vector Machine and Local Linear Embedding. The two methods are evaluated by application on two experimental case studies, a SAG mill and a polymer extruder.

Nowadays the biodiesel use is obligate in Brazil, in order to reduce the emissions of fuel burn. However, it is important to analyze which percentage of biodiesel is necessary to keep or improve the lubricant action of fuel for diesel engine, as well which kind of biodiesel give better performance. Therefore, this work aims to analyze the parameters that keep the lubricant action of biofuels, by using the Box-Behnken design type to optimize them. In this design was evaluated the input parameters: the type of the biodiesel (soybean, sunflower and palm), the concentration (5%, 20% and 100%) and the temperature of contact (25°C, 40°C and 60°C). The analyzed output parameters were the percentage of film formation, coefficient of friction, wear scar diameter (WSD) of ball, these output parameters were obtained by HFRR tribometer and they were analyzed applying response surface methodology. With this methodology was possible to determine the simultaneous influence and the interactions between two or more independent variables investigated. The response surfaces generated for the coefficients of friction, WSD, film formation showed a higher lubricant action for higher levels of concentration of biodiesel. An increase in lubricant action was found to high and intermediate temperature.

Short cylindrical charges were detonated in drill holes in rock to determine the effect that decoupling ( defined as the ratio of the radius of the hole to the radius of the charge ) has on the strain - generating abilities of explosions in rock . The amplitude and period of the strain pulses produced in the rock were studied as a function of distance , size of charge , and decoupling . The main results of these studies were that , for a given distance and size of charge , the amplitude of the strain pulse decreases as decoupling increases and the period of the strain pulse decreases at first and then increases as decoupling increases . A simplified theory of decoupling is presented that satisfactorily explains the experimental results . The information presented makes it possible to predict the effect of decoupling on explosiongenerated strain pulses in rock and thus helps the explosives user evaluate the effect of decoupling on his blasting .

The high pressure acid leach process (HPAL) is being commercially used in four plants around the world to treat limonitic laterites. The two major operating costs of the HPAL process are the sulphuric acid and the energy required to heat the pulp to the desired temperature (>240°C). As an alternative to acid injection and steam heating, the in-situ generation of sulphuric acid and heat, produced during the high temperature pressure oxidation of sulphur-bearing materials blended with laterites, has been investigated at the laboratory scale. Various sources of sulphur have been examined, in particular, elemental sulphur, pyrrhotite and a Cu-Ni low-grade bulk concentrate. Under the proper blend ratios, all sulphur sources tested generated sufficient acid to result in equivalent nickel and cobalt dissolutions. A significant improvement to the process economics can result from the addition of sulphur sources containing valuable by-products, such as nickellcobalt andlor precious metals (gold and PGMs). This is especially true in the latter case, when the HPAL can be operated under Platsol conditions (i.e. with the addition of 5-10g/L of chloride), to dissolve the base metals and precious metals simultaneously in the autoclave. Various examples of the application of this concept are presented, together with a brief discussion of its implication on the autoclave design and the downstream processes to recover the values from the leach solutions. Introduction During the past few years, a number of changes in the mine operations at Copper Mountain have taken place. The modernization and mechanization were necessitated and given impetus by wartime and other conditions, which were: (1) The urgent need for copper for wartime purposes. (2) The scarcity of skilled labour for underground work. (3) The increase in labour and supplies cost. (4) The necessity of finding ways and means of increasing the output per man-shift, because of the scarcity of skilled labour and the rising cost of labour. (5) The desire to increase safety measures, reduce the silicosis hazard, and aid mine ventilation. (6) The desire to improve the general working conditions in the mine for all workmen. (7) The desire to reduce the amount of dilution in the ore stream by a more selective yet highly productive method of mining. To this end, mining with diamond drills, and transferring broken ore with slusher hoists, appeared to be the answer to the problem. After considerable discussion and estimation of costs for comparison with those of the operation as carried on at that time, the proposed methods were tried out and, in practice, gave very gratifying results. Reference at this point is made to the paper written by C. H. Brehaut, W. N. Taylor, H. A. Shannon, and R. S. Douglas, which was published in the September, 1945, issue of Mining Technology, by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Inc., and subsequently in commercial mining journals. Since that time some improvements have been made in undercutting an orebody - the first through experiment and practice, the second through making use of the earth's barodynamic or gravitational forces. It is the purpose of this paper to describe and discuss these later developments.

"Replacing the century old rail tunnels that run beneath the Hudson River and carry about 200,000 passengers per day between New York to New Jersey has been a high priority for many years. But after Superstorm Sandy hit the east coast of the United States in 2012, the urgency to replace the tunnels increased dramatically. The Hudson Tunnels project is one of nine projects that make up the larger $30 billion Gateway Project. The Gateway Project has been called the most urgent infrastructure program in the country and the Hudson Tunnels is the most critical part of the project, as it will build a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River and rebuild the existing and deteriorating North River Tunnel that connects New York and New Jersey.“Superstorm Sandy proved the level of resiliency of the tunnels, which was not very good,” Amtrak deputy chief engineer structures James Richter told attendees of the George A. Fox Conference in New York City on Jan. 23. Age and corrosive salts deposited by flood waters from the storm in 2012 have affected interior concrete and copper wiring in the tunnels. “Since then, things have been deteriorating and getting less reliable.”Richter, along with Mohammed Nasim, senior director engineering design, both with Amtrak, spoke at the 2018 George A. Fox Conference where more than 350 tunneling and underground construction professionals attended the conference at the Graduate Center of the City University if New York to share insights about the complexities many of them face on daily basis.Under the theme of “Managing construction of complex underground projects: Strategies for tunneling in populated areas,” the one-day conference featured presentations from some of the top minds in the tunneling and underground construction industry. The presentations touched on everything from the highly technical challenges of constructing tunnels through changing geology while working beneath cities and rivers, to navigating the complex financial issues and contracts that come with the projects that have many stakeholders.All of those challenges, and more are part of the Hudson Tunnels project. It is one of the best examples of the full complexities of a complex tunnel project, with the added pressure of securing funding from state and federal government entities under an increasingly tight deadline."

USE of copper as an intentionally added alloy in steel and cast iron has rapidly expanded with-in the last fifteen years. It is estimated that in 1931 not more than 2000 tons of copper were so used; by 1941, however, this figure had grown to 13,000 tons. Tonnage figures during the war years have been restricted just as copper itself has been restricted, but copper-bearing cast irons and steels have played a part in the production of ordnance equipment. They are used in gun carriages, airplane landing-gear assemblies, scout cars, bulldozing equipment, army trucks, armor plate and many other instruments of war. These wartime applications have their counterpart in many peacetime applications; derricks, dredges, mine equipment, railway equipment, trucks, farm implements, automobiles, and tractors, all usually contain some parts made of copper-bearing steel or iron. An example of this is the Ford tractor which in 1940 contained over 300 lb. of copper-bearing steel castings. To this list should be added corrugated building sheet for exterior use most of which, at the present time, contains upward of 0.15 per cent copper. With the return to peacetime economy and the removal of wartime restrictions, it appears certain that copper cast irons and steels will find increasing application in civilian goods.

"Decreasing gold-in-ore grades is one of the main drivers of poorer productivity and rapidly escalating unit costs. Grinding costs, water use and reagent consumption are all intimately related to the ore grade processed. Various pre-concentration technologies have been developed that can be applied at various stages of crushing prior to ore grinding. This paper will review the amenability of ores to coarse particle barren gangue rejection for fine crush sizes in the pumpable particle size range (i.e., particles between 5 mm and 0.3 mm in size). The liberation of oxide gangue achieved during crushing is evaluated by proxy using sink-float analysis and the deportments of gold, sulfur, and arsenic into sinks and floats are monitored. Amenability of gangue rejection by continuous gravity separation is evaluated after various crushing modes (vertical shaft impact crushing, cone crushing, and HPGR crushing). The potential to identify coarse particle mineral association and liberation using three-dimensional x-ray computed tomography will be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of research in this area is to explore some of the attributes which make some ores amenable to preconcentration, or rejection of a significant component of the feed mass to tailings at a coarse liberation size. Characteristics such as ore type, mineralogy, breakage pattern, particle shape, and liberation characteristics may need to be examined to identify amenability to pre-concentration amenability.It is intended to focus on continuous gangue rejection in the pumpable size range (0.3–5.0 mm) as this remains one of the key opportunities to reduce processing costs through a combination of techniques including screening (for mineral differentiation rather than size classification only) and gravity separation (using jigs). This is to be contrasted to conventional preconcentration as performed with automatic ore sorters."

Blasting is an essential component of most mining operations, and is used to reduce the rock mass to a workable size distribution, as well as to create stable openings and pit walls. Frequently, there is little difference between the designs of blasts to achieve these two functions, though more advanced operations have developed different designs for these very different functions. To assist in the appreciation of how blasting practices can impact on the stability of rock openings and pit excavations, this paper reviews the role of high pressure explosion gases on final block stability. It is assumed that the stability of all surface and underground excavations are, to a greater or lesser extent, controlled by the interaction between discrete rock blocks. Typically, these blocks will be defined by either natural, or excavation induced, jointing.

"A computational model to investigate solid/liquid phase change transitions for binary alloy under directional solidification is presented. Conservation equations are developed by using an homogeneous formulation. A second order accuracy method of time and space based on finite volume approximation has been evaluated by comparing results to spectral solution for time-dependent solutal convection developping in a melted alloy. For extended model to solid/liquid interface effects time amplification of solutal perturbation injected near the interface is described before considering solutal convection is melt.IntroductionThe enthalpy method gives a front fixing approach for energy equation without introducing coordinate transformation. The interfare position is recovered a posteriori [1]. A number of authors have extended this approach so as to include the convection phenomena within the two phase 'mushy region' [2, 3, 4, 5, 6].We have developed a time-dependent enthalpy-porosity formulation for directional solidification [4, 6, 8]. The interaction between solid and liquid phases is modelised by a Darcien type force in the phase change area. The behaviour of the melt is similar with the flow of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium. This force is proportional to the relative phase velocity. It corresponds to a damping force depending on the anisotropic permeability of the 'mushy zone'. The permeability depends on the liquid fraction and on the size of·solidification microstructures. An informative discussion of a new slant on the general approach of continuum mechanics needed to analyze the formation of mushy zone is given in [12]. The method is extended to the presence of species diffusion: the solutal Stefan condition which expresses the solute incorporation or rejection across the interface is accounted implicitly in a species equation valid in all the domain [14, 15]."

The science and technology of roan temperature rechargeable metal hydrides began about 1969 with the discoveries that the intermetallic Compounds LaNi5 and TiFe could be, conveniently hydrided and dehydrided at roan temperature and modest H2 pressures. Subsequently, this lead to the development of a broad family of REE-containing AB5 hydrides and numerous applications that make use of the extraordinary H2-absorption and reaction-heat properties of these materials. Some of the applications include H2 storage, compression and separation, as well as heat pumping, heat to mechanical energy conversion and electric energy storage. This paper briefly reviews the fundamental phenomenology of metal hydrides, the history of the use of REE's in rechargeable metal hydrides, the practical engineering properties of these materials and the applications that have evolved around them. The rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery, a new vial alternative to NiCd cells, stands at the forefront of the applications.

The Early Permian Aldebaran Sandstone is the main hydrocarbon reservoir in the Denison Trough. Contained hydrocarbon gas has a wet gas index (C1/CI - C4) of between 0.87 and 0.97 (N=10), and constituent methane has 813CPDB values ranging from -51.5 to -36.2% (N=10). These values clearly indicate that the gas is thermogenic rather than biogenic. Considering the predominantly humic nature and maturity of all organic source material for the gas, the methane 813C values are anomalously low, with typical values for humic methane present in natural gas formed at similar maturity levels significantly higher at -26 ¦ 5%o. This suggests that, in addition to disseminated organic matter in underlying marine mudrocks of the Cattle Creek Formation, methane substantially more depleted in 13C was derived from coal seams of the Reids Dome beds, a thick coal measure sequence which underlies the Cattle Creek Formation and, in the south, the Aldebaran Sandstone. This methane is likely to have S13C values of between -75 and -40 oo, based on the known isotopic composition of dry gas trapped in humic coals of similar rank in the Sydney Basin and elsewhere in the Bowen Basin. In addition to the low methane S13C values, the contribution of coal seam methane would explain the fact that, (1) methane S13C values do not show the normal increase with decreasing gas wetness, and (2)013C%o (ethane-methane) values do not show the expected decrease with decreasing gas wetness. The presence of co-existing, isotopically heavy CO2 (S13C = +2.0 to +3.4%0, N=3) in the Glentulloch and Merivale Fields is consistent with the view that natural gas in the Aldebaran Sandstone is in part coal seam derived.

The TRJV Mine is located approximately 43 miles northeast of Winnemucca, along the east flank of the Osgood Mountains in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, Northwest Nevada (see Figure 1). The Turquoise Ridge Mine is an underground mine, and is a 25% joint venture partner with Newmont Mining. The TRJV mine utilizes the underhand cut-and-fill mining method due to the relatively low rock quality in the ore zones and the relatively shallow dipping 25-45 degree ore body geometries. This paper defines a rehabilitation risk rating system (RRRS) for prioritizing rehabilitation of drifts damaged in the mining processes including long term development drifts providing access to the mining areas. The ultimate use is as a mine planning tool for the organized scheduling of rehab in a timely manner. A few case studies of the most needy rehab areas identified by the RRRS mapping system is presented, and the type of rehab completed design for these areas. Suggestions on improving the rehab risk mapping system include the use of support history and rock mass strength rating factors.

Circular economy opportunities for the mining sector are presented in this paper. A literature review was undertaken, followed by qualitative data gathering through survey questionnaires and unstructured interviews, and stakeholder engagements through workshops. The circular economy opportunities were identified and categorised according to the three circular economy principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. Opportunities aligned with the first principle include increased ore extraction efficiency processes, water recovery and recycling, substitution of raw materials, technology and waste utilisation for carbon capture and biotechnology. The second principle includes opportunities such as zero waste-to-landfill strategies, repurposing of mine waste, re-mining of tailings, recycling metals and processing of residues, and urban mining of electronic waste. Opportunities aligned with the third principle include the adoption of renewable energy, green hydrogen production, repurposing of post mining landscapes, and eradication of alien invasive vegetation. Furthermore, the challenges of implementing circular economy in the mining sector are discussed. The current rate of waste generation from mining activities far exceeds the rate of reuse and repurposing. Recycling of large tyres and characterisation of hazardous electronic waste also pose challenges. The most implementable circular economy opportunities in the mining sector are those aligned with the second principle of keeping materials in use. The high impact opportunities aligned with the first principle of designing out waste and pollution, and the third principle of regenerating natural systems, are more difficult to implement as they require large investments.

The Washoe plant, 1 in Anaconcla. Mont., together with the local street-railroad, ranches a. foundry and machine-shop a brick-plant and the Montana hotel, form a property under one management; to which should be added the mines in Butte owned by the company, from which part of the ore-supply of the plant comes. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co., controlled by the Amalgamated Copper Co., was reorganized under the laws of Montana in 1893. A map of the plant, showing the numerous departments and illustrating the details of tracks, pipe-lines, and charging-stations for compressed-air locomotives, is given in Fig. 1.

Solvent extraction of iron from zinc refinery liquors has been investigated before, mainly on the MEHPA / HC1 stripping combination. Leakage of chloride into the zinc electrolyte and the costs of handling the ferric chloride eluate have prevented this option from being adopted. This work explores the stripping of the ferric loaded organic phase with nitric acid to take advantage of the possibility of regenerating up to 6N nitric acid, and clean spheroidal hematite production by autoclave treatment of ferric nitrate solution. The work was carried out with DEHPA (di 2-ethyl-hexyl phosphoric acid) in kerosine. Degradation testing proved the DEHPA to be very stable, when exposed to nitric acid solutions up to 6N and temperatures up to 70" C over a period of five days. Ferric iron was removed completely froma synthetic hot acid leach liquor, irrespective of the DEHPA concentration. Stripping the ferric turned out to be the problematic step. Although the stripping efficiency was considerable better at 50 than at 20° C, it decreased with increasing DEHPA/Fe ration in the organic phase. Eluates of no more than 5-10 g/l ferric nitrate were produced. surprisingly, nitric acid was found to be a less efficient stripping agent than sulphuric at equivalent normality and its efficacy levelled off above 4N. It was concluded that DEHPA does not appear to be the S.X. reagent to take advantage of the low cost autoclave decomposition of ferric nitrate opportunity in zinc hydrometallurgy and that another S.X. reagent, also resistant to nitric acid, but based on weaker compound formation is needed.

The XCVIIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at Spokane, Wash., beginning Monday, Sept. 27, 1909, as already announced in Special Circulars of May 8 and Aug. 14, 1909, and in the Bulletins for June, July, and August. The meeting will be preceded by a tour through Yellow stone Park and visits to Butte and Anaconda, and will be followed by visits to the Coeur d'Alene district, to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition at Seattle, to the mining- and smelting-plants near Salt Lake, and to the iron- and lead- and zinc-plants at Pueblo. The special train for the party' will leave Chicago, September 16, and return about October 12. Details of the itinerary are given later in this announcement. The Secretary of the Spokane Local Committee is Lyndon K. Armstrong, 615 Hyde Block, Spokane, Wash., to whom should be addressed all inquiries concerning local matters. The control of the papers and proceedings will remain in charge of the Institute office, as usual. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the many courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the excursion party be made larger. Exceptional facilities to visit the many mines and smelters have been freely provided; and members are requested to make all reasonable effort to attend the meeting at Spokane and participate in the excursions. Blasting accident data over a 30-year period (1980-2010) are summarized and presented for all types of surface and underground mining operations in the USA. The historical record of injuries from blasting accidents in all types of mines continues to show a significant decline. The overall decline in mine blasting injuries in the U.S.A. has resulted from advancements in blasting technology, training and improvements in blasting products and blasting processes. Some of the technology advancements such as safer blasting agents and computerized bulk vehicle loading, electronic detonators and remote operated blasting systems, and computerized blast design have and continue to significantly contribute to improvements in the historical blasting safety record. Also, the progress of significantly improving the safety of mine blasting has resulted from the combined efforts of miners, mine companies and operators, miners, unions, explosive and blasting product manufacturers, associations such as the International Society of Explosives Engineers and the Institute of Makers of Explosives and various government agencies.

Zincor operates four Lurgi fluidized-bed roasters at its roast-leach-electrowin refinery in Springs, South Africa. In 2006, Zincor?s four roasters had reached ages ranging between 26 and 38 years, while the expected life of this type of roaster is generally 20 to 25 years. Roaster 3 was the first to be rebuilt in 2006 because its condition had deteriorated the most. Roaster 4 is being rebuilt in 2007 and the last two roasters will be rebuilt over the next few years as necessary. The main damage to Roaster 3 was caused by buckling of the roaster steel shell. This caused the freeboard and dome areas to shift, resulting in cracks in the dome brick lining and crumbling of the bricks lining the freeboard. The steel shell buckled owing to the combined effects of excessively high operating temperatures and corrosion. These were caused by the following two main factors: ?Thicker external insulation was installed during a previous maintenance shut, which resulted in an increased steel shell temperature and exacerbated the normal metal fatigue ?SO2/SO3 containing gas that had permeated the brick lining passed through its dew point during frequent planned and unplanned shuts over the life of the roaster. This caused acid formation between the refractory brick lining and steel shell, resulting in corrosion of the shell. The initial plan was to replace only the damaged areas of Roaster 3, but when it was dismantled more damage was found, and the roaster was rebuilding from the tuyeres upwards. During there building the opportunity was taken to modify the design of some of the brickwork to extend its life and make future repairs easier. This paper discusses the mode of failure of Roaster 3 and the lessons learnt during its dismantling and rebuilding.

"This paper introduces the mineralogical analysis of certain polymetallic copper-zinc ore in China with the aim of improving the flotation process. The main valuable elements, mineral phases and compositions of run-of-mine ore were inspected by the X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and chemical analysis. For a deep known of the old process defects, Mineral Liberation Analysis system (MLAs) was employed to investigate the minerals liberation degree of selected key slurry points. Analysis results show that the run-of-mine ore belongs to the original copper-zinc polymetallic symbiotic ore at low oxidative level, which mainly contains 0.16% Cu, 4.43% Zn and 0.88% Sn. Gangue minerals are mainly silicate minerals, and zinc mineral is sphalerite. MLAs test illustrates that about 86% sphalerite has been dissociated in zinc flotation feed. In the current flotation process, over grinding of sphalerite monomer and insufficient liberation of intergrowths are the key problems need to be solved imminently. Up to this point, a new process consisted of two steps roughing unit is submitted in this research. It contributes two positive effects on zinc flotation performance: (i) separating sphalerite monomer timely to decrease overgrinding; (ii) improving zinc minerals intergrowths liberation efficiency. Flotation results indicate that the zinc concentrate grade increased 0.90% and the recovery improved 0.96% in the new flotation processINTRODUCTION Mineralogical analysis mainly focusses on solving mineralogy problems in minerals processing, assisting in minerals behaviors prediction and control for separation engineering (Falkovich, et al., 2001; Hillier, et al., 2003; Schouwstra and Smit, 2011). Process defects searching becomes its ordinary work, and flotation optimization appears to be its targets gradually. For example, Lucky Friday mine company (Idaho America) fails to obtain qualified lead concentrate as the change of ore properties (Nadoll, et al., 2011). Mineralogical analysis ascertains that there are too many dissociated sphalerite, pyrite and gangue particles exist in lead concentrate. According to this, more cleaning units are added to solve problems effectively. Kanowna Belle mine (Australia) takes a flash circuit in operation successfully with the aim of optimize flotation process, under the helps of mineralogical analysis and industrial test (Newcombe, et al., 2013). Lotter N.O. (2011) gives a deep description on how mineralogical data assisting mineral processing engineers to design and optimize flowsheet. For decades, quantitative and automated mineralogy techniques (Andersen, et al., 2009; Gu, et al., 2012; Oghazi, et al., 2009; Yu, et al., 2007) get well developed and hugely improve the veracity and repeatability of minerals properties measurement.
