Colloidal interactions play a critical role in mineral processing, including grinding, physical separation (particularly flotation), dewatering, and tailings management. Despite great energy input in comminution to liberate valuables from gangues, heterocoagulation between valuables and gangues would prevent the separation of valuables from gangues. On the other hand, selective coagulation/flocculation to increase the size of desired fine particles could enhance physical separation and dewatering, while dispersion is needed for fine grinding. To control the state of colloidal dispersions by creating favorable conditions, it is of paramount importance to study colloidal interactions in a relevant system and understand underlying mechanisms. This review summarizes recent advances in developing the-state-of-the-art techniques and novel methods of measuring colloidal forces, including atomic force microscope, surface force apparatus, zeta potential distribution measurement, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, and our recently developed integrated dynamic force apparatus. The basic principle of each technique was introduced first, followed by a summary of critical information derived for the relevant mineral processing systems. Finally, the pros and cons of each technique were discussed to emphasize the use of complementary techniques that assist in solving fundamental problems in mineral processing.

The prevention of AMD in situ is more attractive compared to subsequent downgradient treatment alternatives that do not involve source control. AMD source control can be achieved by shifting the microbial activity in the sulfidic rock from pyrite oxidation to anaerobic heterotrophic activity. This is achieved by adding biodegradable organic carbon amendments to the sulfidic rock. This technique was applied in an abandoned mine pool with a pH of 3-3.5. Following treatment, near-neutral pH and decreased effluent heavy metal concentrations were achieved. In situ bioremediation by enhancement of bacterial iron and sulfate reduction is a promising technology for AMD prevention.

Rio Tinto has embarked on a journey to use automation to improve the performance of its surface mines. The driver for automation is to improve the accuracy and consistency of mining processes and less to do with cost savings through labour reduction. A key task in most surface mines is blasthole drilling. The degree to how well this is done cascades through the downstream mining process. It impacts scheduling, excavation, slope stability, material handling, beneficiation and final product blending. Improved blasthole drilling was identified as an objective that has a significant business case in most of Rio Tinto's surface mines. This paper describes Rio Tinto's drill enhancement project that has developed a robust system for automating most of the functions on a Terex SKSS16 drill rig. Automated drilling is currently being used in production at the West Angelas iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A description of the essential elements of the drill automation system is given together with an overview of how automated drilling is performed remotely from the mine office. A review of some of the benefits of the enhanced drill system is given together with the future plans to extend the functionality of the automated drill and the expected benefits.

Comminution within rod mills has been investigated by use of a matrix analysis of breakage processes. A parameter, the number of breakage stages, has been introduced and comminution within all rod mills has been expressed in terms of the number of grinding stages and a function which describes the feed rate, mill diameter, and mill speed. The effect of variation in feed rate, feed sizing analysis and mill speed on the number of breakage stages is discussed, but no general relation is proposed because more study is needed.INTRODUCTIONRod mills are normally used as the first unit of multi-unit systems for the grinding of metalliferous ores and the cost of operating rod mills may be considerable. For both economic and metallurgical reasons, it is therefore necessary that the mills should be operated efficiently and that a knowledge of the mechanism of the size reduction process within rod mills should be as complete as possible. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, sulphur, SO2, off-gas, Zimplats Zimplats embarked on an off-gas sampling campaign in December 2009 to characterise the concentration of SO2 in the off-gas from their 13 MW furnace. In excess of forty isokinetic samples (US EPA Method 8) were taken over seven days. The aim of the sampling campaign was to increase the understanding of factors that influence sulphur release from sulphide concentrates in an electric furnace. Specifically, detailed monitoring was conducted over various operating conditions to evaluate: ? The relationship between SO2 and feed rate (i.e. furnace power) ? The relationship between SO2 and ingress (i.e. furnace freeboard pressure) ? The impact of concentrate bed thickness on SO2 (i.e. blacktop) ? The effect of events such as tapping and converter slag return on SO2 ? The desulphurization reactions that take place in the blacktop A model was developed to predict the SO2 content in furnace off-gas for a particular set of operating conditions. In order to evaluate the impact of random, uncorrelated changes in concentrate composition, ingress and power (feed rate) on the SO2 content of the off-gas, a Monte Carlo approach was adopted whereby concentrate composition, power, and ingress were allowed to vary randomly around selected set-points. The model is primarily based on the release of ?labile? sulphur from the partial thermal dissociation of sulphide minerals with an over-stoichiometric sulphur content (e.g., Fe7S8 decomposition to FeS and S). The main findings of this work suggest that labile sulphur does not fully account for the measured SO2 content of the off-gas, and that limited oxidation of sulphides during melting also contributes to the SO2 content. Details of sulphide oxidation reactions in the furnace remain unclear, and it is currently not possible to provide a theoretical framework for the relationship between the extent of oxidation and variables such as temperature, gas composition, particle size, and residence time in the furnace black top. Through the use of the Monte Carlo model it was, however, possible to constrain the extent of sulphide oxidation to about 1%. This work has shown in practice what was expected in concept, that SO2 in off-gas is proportional to furnace power and ingress rate. The model that was developed consistently slightly under-predicts the quantity of SO2 generated. It also highlights that more work is required to better understand the analytical methods used to analyse for SO2 in off-gas.

"The Eglinton Crosstown Line was conceived as the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, a partially underground light rail line, announced in 2007 as part of the Transit City plan, which included the implementation of six other light rail lines across Toronto.There were 43 stops planned for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, 13 of which would be underground . For those underground stations a lot of specialty foundation works needed to be carried out. King piles, soldier piles with lagging and secant piles were mainly required fulfilling the tasks of installing the retaining wall system.The paper will focus on the original design and alternative solutions, discussing the benefits and limits of these. It will also explain the installation process in general as well as some specific features related to specific site conditions, e.g. limits in installation depth, soil characteristics etc. The required equipment will be explained showing the benefits and limits.INTRODUCTIONThe Eglinton Crosstown project is a 19-kilometre LRT line that will bring much needed relief to the transit woes of Torontonians. Traversing the city in an east-west slice across the midtown artery of Eglinton Avenue, the Crosstown rail line involves a combination of 15 underground stations and 10 atgrade surface stops. It is one of the largest transit infrastructure projects under way in North America today. Aecon has joined partners ACS Infrastructure Canada, Ellis Don, and SNC-Lavalin to form Crosslinx Transit Solutions (Crosslinx).As with many of today’s mega public transportation projects, the Crosstown LRT follows the Public- Private Partnership (P3) model. Aecon is an equal partner in the $5.3-billion Crosslinx consortium to develop the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project in Toronto. Upon the LRT's completion in 2021, Metrolinx, the region’s transit authority and also the project client/owner, will turn to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to operate it. The impact of this highly anticipated LRT line on commuters in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is expected to be dramatic and immediate once the first train leaves the station five years from now. In fact, Metrolinx is estimating that within its first 10 years of service, the Crosstown line will be carrying 5,500 passengers per hour (in peak direction) and making 100 million passenger trips annually."

Foreword Following the explosion in the Hillcrest mine, which occurred in the evening of Sunday, September 19th, 1926, and in which two men lost their lives, the writer was invited by the Hon. J.E. Brownlee, Premier of Alberta, to conduct an investigation into the causes of the disaster, and to make such recommendations as seemed advisable with a view to minimizing as far as possible the chance of future explosions in this and similar Alberta coal mines. Accordingly, the mine was visited, and extensive investigations were made underground on October 21st, 2.2.nd, and 25th, in company with Mr. John T. Stirling, Chief Inspector of Mines for Alberta, Mr. Moses Johnson, District Inspector for the Crowsnest Pass District, Mr. J as. A. Richards, Inspector of Mines, Edmonton, and also Mr. Thomas Davies, manager, and other officials of the Hillcrest mine. Hearings of the coroner's inquest were also attended on October 20th and 23rd, when testimony regarding the explosion was given by various witnesses. The following paper summarizes my general observations in tracing the place of origin of the explosion, and my efforts to determine the cause of ignition. Certain recommendations arc also made, and the writer invites discussion on these and the other matters dealt with in the paper.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. It describes briefly mining practices at the Sunrise iron mine of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp., Platte County, Wyo. The Sunrise mine is in the Hartville iron district in east-central Wyoming (fig. 1). The district covers part of the Hartville Mountains, a region of moderate relief in which erosional features have been formed by the dissection of a low plateau. Altitudes vary from 4,300 feet along the North Platte River to 6,000 feet in the uplift. The climate is semiarid, with hot summers and winter temperatures below zero for short periods. Grasses, cacti, yucca, and low desert shrubs grow at lower elevations. Cottonwood and boxelder trees and willows grow along permanent streams; juniper and coniferous trees are confined to the higher elevations.

The largest reserves of palygorskite in the world are located in Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces in East Central China. The deposits are Middle Miocene in age and range from 3 to 6 m in thickness. The deposits are the alteration product of basaltic volcanic ash. The Chinese Geological Survey estimates the palygorskite reserves are in excess of 200 million tons. The elongate particle shape results in unique colloidal properties. Large quantities are exported to Japan, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, Australia, and West and Gulf Coasts of the United States. The markets include agricultural carriers, paint, joint tape compounds, animal feed binders, catalyst support, drilling muds, and suspending agents for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and medicines. The viscosity is high and the quartz content is generally 5% or less.

Augered-Cast-in-Place piles have been used successfully for many deep foundation applications. The four case studies discussed herein describe ACIP pile projects where problems developed during ACIP pile installation requiring changes to the method or sequence of installation. The case studies illustrate the importance of understanding existing subsurface conditions and project constraints when considering the use of this pile type. Ground loosening and over-excavation of soil during the augering process, a significant concern for fine to medium sands and non-plastic silts below the water table, can significantly impact adjacent structures. This risk needs to be evaluated during the pile selection process and generally can be mitigated, but not eliminated, by requiring the use of piling equipment with high torque and slow auger rotation speed to advance the auger with minimum amount of rotation. In some applications where high lateral stresses in the soil are present such as at the base of retaining structures, the use of ACIP piles may not be appropriate if structure movement is unacceptable. On the other hand, ACIP piles have been successfully used to support deep foundations in preconsolidated varved deposits where the new structure was designed to accommodate recompression settlement.

The upper amphibolite-grade mctasediments of thc rinaroo area, North Queensland, form part of a regional aurcole to the large Tinaroo Batholith and are the stratigraphic equivalents of the Hodgkinson Formation of gencrally low metamorphic grade. There is no evidence of any lithological unconformity.The higher grade metasediments have a more complex deformation history than is typical for thc surrounding region and this may bc due to one or a combination of two factors; an additional strain componcnt associated wilh the intrusion of Ihe Tinaroo Batholith, or a more marked finite strain response to the overall regional stress field within hotter. more ductile rocks.Four deformational events can be characterized within Ihc Tinaroo Area. Close to Ihe Tinaroo Batholith D1 and D2, arc so strongly developed that they disrupl the continuily of Ihe original Iithological layering. In the aureole region, D1 is strongly overprinted and its original fabric intensity is obscured, but both D2 and D3 display a mappable decrease in intensity away from the granite margin. These three deformations occurred during Carboniferous or early Permian time. D4 is later and only patchily developed.The broad, moderate pressure metamorphic aureole surrounding the Tinaroo Batholith is a typical of the CairnsCooktown group of Permo-Carboniferous granitoids. which usually develop narrow, lower pressure contact aureoles. Two periods of metamorphism are distinguishable. The first reached peak temperatures somewhat greater than 520°C, the second temperatures around 620-630° C immediately adjacent to the granite contact.Several cale-silicate lenses containing scattered scheelite mineralization occur within the area. Scheelite appears to have crystallized at the same time as the cale-silicate minerals, its appearance coinciding with the intrusion of the Tinaroo Batholith. Unlike many "skarn-type" scheelite deposits, the scheelite-bearing cale-silicates are Fe-poor, with no positive correlation between total Fe and W.

[The Bureau of rides is making a general study of the occurrence of the Clinton red iron ores of Alabama. In the course of this study, it developed that the iron-ore seams of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas were virtually unexplored., and the nature and extent of the ore deposits were undetermined. As a part of the work of the project, the Bureau investigated the occurrence of red iron ore in the .areas. Eighty-four channel samples, representing 317.6 linear feet, were taken from l2 locations along the outcrop of the red iron-ore seams, Ten diamond-drill holes, amounting to 3915.5 linear feet, were drilled. In these areas, commercial- and marginal-grade ores of minable thickness have been shown. It is estimated that 4,500,000 tons of indicated ore and 6,700,000 tens of inferred commercial-grade ore averaging 5.1 feet thick, 47.6 percent Fe, 26.1 percent insoluble, 0.1 percent CaO, and 0.04 percent P; 7,200,000 tins of inferred marginal grade ore averaging 6.1 feet thick, 36.2 percent Fe, .35.0 percent insoluble, 3.9 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P; and 18,500,000 tons of ferruginous sandstone averaging 12.2 feet thick, 19.2 percent re, 50.1 percent insoluble, 9.6 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P are present in the areas.. All tonnages are estimated as gross tons of recoverable ore in place, based' on 65-percent mining recovery. In accordance with established policy of the Bureau of Mines of publishing factual data as soon as possible after completion of field work, this description of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas is presented. A unique, regional grid of deep (12 - 14 second record length), seismic reflection and refraction data has been recorded by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) across the offshore Gippsland Basin and parts of the adjacent Bass Basin, in southeastern Australia. These data have been combined with onshore mapping to produce a new model for the development of the Gippsland and adjacent Bass Strait basins. Overall, the Gippsland Basin contains up to 12 - 14 km of sediment in an ESE-trending depocentre bounded on its north and northwestern margins by a detachment ramp, and on its southern side by a relatively linear, listric fault system. The basin, together with the adjacent Bass and Otway Basins, appears to have formed as part of a linked, largely- strike-slip to 'transtensional' system, which started to extend through Bass Strait, probably during the latest Jurassic. Each of the basins developed by movement on a common detachment or detachment complex, which produced headwall extension at their western ends, in the areas now occupied by the Strzelecki Ranges, Otway Ranges - Torquay Sub-basin, and Robe Trough. Adjustments and reactivation from the mid Cretaceous of several postulated microplates in the region, largely in response to Tasman Basin rifting, gave rise to the wrench-related and compressional structures which form the major petroleum targets in the Gippsland Basin. However, the same process formed largely extensional stuctures in the Bass Basin. Our interpretation of the tectonic history of the Gippsland Basin leads us to the conclusion that there may have been several phases of petroleum generation and migration, and that potential petroleum traps appear to exist in the deeper section, in structures sometimes not reflected at the top or near-top Latrobe Group levels.

The literature pertaining to the electrochemical reaction at the anode during electrolytic reduction of alumina by the Hall-Heroult process is not in universal llgreement about the gaseous product. The possibility of electrochemical formation of CO at the anode was examined using existing data. Although the thermochemistry favours co-evolution of CO and CO2 with CO as the major product, the mechanism of the reaction shows this is unlikely. Since the origin of CO can be more logically explained by non-electrochemical mechanisims, it is concluded that CO2 is the only product from the electrolytic reaction at all current densities.

The first test pile for the carrier pier and south wharf at NAVSTA Puget Sound was driven on December 27, 1989, and the final pile was tested on February 26, 1990. Implementation and modification of the test pile program were done by the owners (WESTDIV and ROICC-Everett), the engineers (ABAM and Hart Crowser), and the contractor and his subcontractor (General Manson Joint Venture and GRL). The site is located as shown on Figure 1. SUMMARY OF THE SOIL CONDITIONS A soil profile along the pier is shown as Figure 2. The soil units can be generalized as follows: ? Upper Silts - Fill, sandy silt, and clayey silt extending from the mudline to an elevation of about -80 feet; ? Intermediate Sand - A medium dense to very dense silty sand unit which is about 30 feet thick near the shore, but thins and disappears offshore; ? Lower Silts - Sandy silts and clayey silts in a medium stiff to stiff condition; ? Deep Sand - A very dense overconsolidated sandy soil encountered at an elevation of about -145 feet.

This paper describes the development of a process for producing manganese and iron pellet concentrates from low-grade manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna range by a two-stage sulfatization-reduction roast. First, the manganese minerals (7.5 percent manganese) were converted to water-soluble manganese sulfate by roasting in sulfur oxide gases at 700° C, then, the hematitic iron minerals (31 percent iron) in the hot sulfatized are were reduced to magnetite with simulated reformed natural gas in the temperature range of 350° to 425° C. Batch tests were made in a 3-inch-ID by 6-inch-long, gas-heated, stainless steel retort, and continuous countercurrent experiments were performed in a 2-inch-ID by 10-foot-long, electrically heated shaft furnace. Manganese sulfate was removed from the roasted product by leaching with water, and over 90 percent of the manganese was recovered in an oxide product (65 percent manganese) obtained by precipitation, drying, and thelmal decomposition of the sulfate. An iron oxide concentrate (60 percent iron) with an iron recovery of 75 percent was obtained from the water-insoluble residue by magnetic separation.

Anaconda initiated an extensive underground exploration and discovered a super gene copper blanket which was developed into a small open-pit mine-mill operation that ran from 1970 until the depletion of the copper ore in 1974. East West Minerals, an Australian public company, purchased the mine in 1986 and operated for only seven months producing a single bulk lead-zinc concentrate. In 1995, Breakwater acquired the Restigouche Open pit and Caribou underground deposits. Breakwater began milling operations in July 1997 but Caribou Mine failed to commercialize production, and the company decided to shut it down in August 1998, because of declining metal prices. The mill was plagued by mechanical and design problems, but deficiencies in metal recoveries prevented the operation from reaching desired levels."

At the beginning of the 20th century, barite was a mineral of minor importance in the United States. Its primary use was to extend lead oxide in white paint. Barite also added the special qualities of hiding power and flatness to paint. Because white lead sometimes turns black or yellow and barite does not, ground barite became a pigment on its own merit. Barium chloride was added to bricks before fi ring to stop efflorescence when exposed to weather. Barium carbonate or nitrate added luster and brilliance to glass. Barium chemicals were added to refining sugar, enameling iron, making oilcloths and paper collars, and in the manufacture of paper, artificial ivory, rubber and lithopone. Lithopone became a major paint ingredient in the 1920s; its use lasted until the 1950s, peaking at 150 kt (165,000 st) of barite in 1937 and 1947 for the manufacture of lithopone. Later in the 20th century, titanium dioxide replaced lead oxide, barite and zinc oxide in the coatings industry. In the 21st century, barite is used as a filler, extender or weighting agent in products such as paints, plastics and rubber. Some specific uses include its use in brake and clutch pads for automobiles, automobile paint primer for metal protection and gloss, to add weight to rubber mud flaps on trucks and to add weight to the cement jacket around petroleum pipelines under water. In the metals casting industry, barite is part of mold release compounds. Because barite significantly blocks X-ray and gamma ray emissions, it is used as aggregate in high density concrete for radiation shielding around X-ray units in hospitals, nuclear power plants and university nuclear research facilities. Ultra-pure barite consumed as liquid is used as a contrast medium in medical X-ray examinations. Barite is the raw material for barium chemicals, such as barium carbonate, which is an ingredient in faceplate glass in the cathode-ray tubes of televisions and computer monitors. In the 21st century, barite industrial uses accounts for an estimated 78 kt/a (86,000 stpy) in the United States.

Only a minimum amount of illumination is generally provided for many types of mobile surface mining equipment. This condition presents a hazard to operating personnel working on and around such equipment. To reduce this hazard MSHA has proposed safety regulations requiring minimum levels of illumination for hazardous zones on and in the immediate area surrounding surface mining equipment. This report describes a Bureau of Mines sponsored project demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of providing dragline illumination in compliance with the proposed MSHA regulations. A description of the computer aided design, on site installation and field evaluation of individual lighting systems for each of three different size draglines is presented
