The Andacollo gold mine is located near the small town of Andacollo, Chile (population 14,000) in the fourth region. It is approximately 35 miles by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena, and Santiago lies about 300 miles to the south (see map.) Site elevation varies between 3300 feet and 4200 feet. The climate at the site is moderate but arid, with an average annual rainfall of only five inches. Because there is little rain, and the temperature varies only a few degrees (57"F to 75°F); there are no freezing, solution dilution, or pad saturation problems. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

The alliance is in the form of a Rock to Specification (R2S™) service, one of Orica’s Blast Based Services (BBS™). The ultimate goal was to facilitate the rapid expansion of material movement from 26 to 41M m3 (34 to 53M yd3) per annum while maintaining a reliable ore supply to the mill.

In the past few years the world petroleum industry has increasingly felt the weight of changes in the principal economic factors affecting pro¬fits. As a result of, these changes, it has been necessary for many oil companies to acquire certain new facilities in order to strengthen their competitive positions and thereby protect their tremendous investments in crude oil reserves, pipe line facilities, refining operations, and marketing outlets. Principally these needs have been met by new capital outlays. A supplementary, method of acquiring needed facilities, however, has been to obtain existing facilities through complete or partial acquisition of other companies.' properties. It is this method of meeting competitive pressures with which this paper is concerned. This paper presents a statistical breakdown of the mergers and acquisitions which occurred in the oil industry between January 1, 1954, and October 1, 1959, showing the frequency' with which certain types of properties were acquired in each of the years studied. In addition, it discusses the principal economic conditions which stimulated many of these property trans¬fers, comments on the effects of these mergers on the consuming public, and indicates the types of, mergers and the rate at which they may be expected during the next three or four years. The basic data upon which the statistical analysis presented in this paper is based were taken from several published sources. Obviously they are somewhat incomplete because not all mergers and acquisitions were reported However;, a careful search was conducted through, The Wall Street, Journal, The Oil and Gas Journal, Potroleum Week, and The Oil Daily with the result that the data should be reasonably complete and comparable for each of the years studied, It is believed, therefore, that the statistical analysis which' follows provides a reasonably accurate indication of the general trend in mergers and acquisitions during the period studied.

Considerable attention has been, and is being, given to the physics of water-films associated with bubble interactions at surfaces. In contrast, little information on the chemistry of such films has been reported. This communication reports a method using sum frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) to describe hydrogen bonding of interfacial water molecules in water films created with bubbles at hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. The SFVS spectra of water films at hydrophilic silica surfaces differ significantly from the spectra of water at a hydrophobic silica surface. The SFVS spectra indicate that a very ordered water structure exists in water films at the hydrophilic silica surface during contact with a bubble and that the extent of hydrogen bonding increases with an increase in contact pressure. Such structural considerations as well as repulsive electrostatic and Van der Waals forces account for film stability for a bubble at the hydrophilic silica surface. In contrast, the SFVS spectra of water at a hydrophobic silica surface show a lack of hydrogen bonding and are characterized by a distinct absorption at about 3700 cm-1 similar to the spectrum of the air/water interface. These results suggest the presence of a water void, or water exclusion zone, at the hydrophobic surface, as supported by X-ray reflectivity measurements reported in the literature, by atomic force microscopy, and by the results from molecular dynamics simulations. Of course the water film at the hydrophobic surface is unstable with film thinning and rupture upon bubble contact. Under these circumstances it is shown that an attractive Van der Waals force between the bubble and the hydrophobic surface can be expected when the water exclusion zone is taken into consideration. As the thickness of the water exclusion zone increases to a thickness corresponding to the size of nano bubbles, the calculated attractive Van der Waals force increases. Remediation and restoration of offshore marine habitats is a relatively new concept with attempts in European regions largely being instigated by requirements of various strategic directives including Article 2 of the Habitats Directive (1992), the EC Water Framework Directive (2000, Article 2 of the OSPAR Convention (1992) and the developing European Marine Strategy Directive. A field experiment to establish the practicality of various options for rehabilitating the seabed on the cessation of dredging has been successfully set up. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the practicality and effectiveness of gravel seeding as a potential restorative method that can be applied at marine aggregate extraction sites following cessation of dredging. Zone 2, within Area 408 (offshore Humber) was chosen as the experimental site as there is some evidence for persistence of sand which may have resulted from screening operations at this site.

Electric-furnace smelting for simultaneous recovery of zinc spelter and lead bullion from complex lead-zinc sinter was investigated. Reduction of lead and zinc was satisfactory. Condensation of lead and zinc vapor to pyrophoric metal powder in a water-cooled, shock-condensing system produced excellent recoveries. Metal-splash condensation to produce zinc spelter was unsatisfactory. Special smelting experiments differentiated the effects of several smelting parameters on zinc metal recovery. The principal cause for unsatisfactory zinc metal recovery was transfer of iron to the condenser and subsequent degradation of zinc in a mixture composed of lead and an iron-zinc intermetallic compound. Limitations of the process were determined. Slag-resistance open-bath electric smelting of complex lead-zinc sinter is not considered feasible.

Engineered Scavenger Compounds (ESCs), developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, are a novel class of compounds that can selectively recover a desired element from a solid or molten alloy. Lithium titanate (Li2Ti3O7 or L'20-3T'02) is being used as an ESC to recover lithium (Li) from Aluminum-Lithium (Al-Li) alloys. X-ray diffraction measurements have shown that lithium titanate undergoes a phase change from an orthorhombic structure to a hexagonal structure. This change is due to the incorporation of Li in the matrix of the material and the effect of temperature. Although both are metastable, the hexagonal phase that forms during the scavenging of Li from Al-Li alloys appears to be the more stable phase. Recovering Li from the ESC by electrodeposition does not cause the structure to revert to the orthorhombic phase. Both the orthorhombic and the hexagonal structures of Li2Ti3O7 have similar scavenging capacities for Li. This paper proposes a new mechanism for the phase transformation.

Using potassium oleate as a collector and alizarin red S as a modifying agent, selective depression of dolomite from francolite was achieved in an alkaline medium (pH > 9.0). Adsorption of alizarin reds alone on dolomite was found to be higher than that on francolite. Complimentary adsorption experiments of alizarin red S and oleate showed that oleate adsorprion was increased in the presence of alizaring red S. The results are explained in terms of comparative adsorption for the active sites on francolite and dolomite by oleate and alizarin red S and their interactions with dissolved mineral species in solution.

A number of terrane reconstructions conflict with global plate histories or with data from adjacent regional studies. Paleogeographic maps have ignored terranes thus are over-simplified. This paper represents an attempt to "marry" Mesozoic global plate reconstructions and terrane analysis to produce examples of a "third generation" of global plate tectonic maps. The best approach to global terrane analysis involves intercomparison of all regional data and the evolving global model. Data conflicts within and between terranes and regions must be resolved by a system of relative data reliability "weighting." The most reliable and useful data are those which constrain "departure" (rift) and "arrival" (collision) times. Certain ad hoc decisions aid in the analysis (e.g. only one net vector allowed per plate). The maps that follow summarize Early Mesozoic global tectonic history at three critical junctures: 240 MA (Triassic); 180 MA (Jurassic); and 120 MA (Cretaceous). Due to space limitations, maps drawn at 20 m.y. intervals appear elsewhere. A preliminary Middle Triassic reconstruction is presented in Figure 1. Major plates and continental blocks are labeled; smaller blocks are marked with abbreviations. Examination of Figure 1 indicates the necessity of modeling Triassic tectonics with at least 68 blocks. Spalling- off of microcontinental slivers from Gondwanaland is active some 70 m.y. before the actual breakup of the supercontinent. In the SW sector of the Pacific, the Australian margins were embroidered with several terranes (e.g. Sumba) which eventually rifted away and crossed Tethys. The NW sector at this time included 10 microcontinental chips forming a huge archipelago along the Asian margin. All blocks inboard of Indochina collided by latest Triassic. Terranes of the NE sector include several (e.g. Arctic Alaska) along the North American margin, and at least six large blocks (e.g. Stikinia) drifting SE with the Farallon Plate. The SE sector

Mining has been typified of late as a boom and bust, cyclical industry operating against a steady decline in the size and quality of mineral deposits. Decreasing deposit grades and increasing costs of traditional mining techniques, all in the face of another commodity downturn, are forcing mining companies more than ever before to seek out new and innovative ways to operate. New technologies are emerging to model, control and track resources through the mining value chain, to move material about mines more efficiently, and to identify and separate ore from gangue early in the extraction process.Discovering such technologies however is only the first challenge for mining companies. Actually implementing technological change successfully has proved to be an even bigger challenge. Like for many industries, fulfilling the promised benefits for the expense and timing envisioned, has not been easy when innovative technologies are introduced.Citing the author’s insights and experiences in a number of emerging technologies, this paper explores barriers to implementing technological change in the mining context. Key elements of a change management framework, first developed for implementing mine management systems, are described to give mining executives insight into how they and their organisations can succeed through technology-driven change.CITATION:McCarthy, B, 2016. "The size distribution of the muckpile formed as a result of open pit blasting operations has a considerable effect on the efficiency of loading, hauling, and crushing. Various researchers have developed specialized computer software that uses image analysis methods for determining the size distribution of the muckpile. However, these methods have some limitations. One of the most important of these limitations is that the very fine fragments in the muckpile cannot be used in the size distribution calculation. In this study, 18 test blasts in total were carried out in two limestone quarries belonging to Batiçim Corp. in Izmir, Turkey. A new model was developed in order to ensure that very fine fragments are used in the size distribution calculation. The size distributions of the test blasts were calculated by both the Wipfrag computer program and the new model. Correlations were established between the muckpile size distributions determined by both methods and the parameters determining the efficiency of the loader. IntroductionThe size distribution of the muckpile formed as a result of open pit blasting operations has a considerable effect on the efficiency of loading, hauling, and crushing. Various researchers have established certain correlations for predicting the efficiency of the operations according to the muckpile size distribution so that production can be carried out economically (Tunstall and Bearman, 1997; Nielsen and Kristiansen, 1996; Workman and Eloranta, 2004; Michaud and Blanchet, 1996; Frimpong, Kabongo, and Davies, 1996; Osanloo and Hekmat, 2005; Molotilov et al., 2010). In these studies, the 50% passing size (X50) is generally used. These methods rely on the correct measurement of the size distribution of the muckpile formed by the blast. The most reliable measurement method would be to subject the entire muckpile to a sieve analysis, but this is obviously impracticable. Therefore, computational method based on image analysis have been developed. These include IPACS (Dahlhielm, 1996), Tucips (Havermann and Vogt, 1996), Fragscan (Schleifer and Tessier, 1996), Cias (Downs and Kettunen, 1996), GoldSize (Kleine annd Cameron, 1996), Wipfrag (Maerz, Palangio, and Franklin, 1996), Split Desktop (Kemeny, 1994), PowerSieve (Chung and Noy, 1996), and Fragalyst (Raina et al., 2002). In these methods, the size limits of the fragments forming the material are determined by image analysis on photographs of the muckpile. However, the computer software has some limitations. It does not take into account the third dimension of the muckpile, nor the size distribution of very fine fragments. In particular, the fragment size ranges below 2.5 to 3 cm cannot be determined, and therefore these cannot be included in the muckpile size distribution. However, the muckpile formed by a bench blast contains a wide range of particle sizes (Tosun et al., 2015)."

THIS REPORT gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of two Tennessee coals, one from the Jellico bed in Campbell County and the other from the Sewanee bed in Marion County. Jellico coal and blends with 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 coal were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. by the BM-AGA method. Sewanee coal was carbonized by the same method at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C.; blends with coals of similar and different ranks were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. The coals were subjected to various physical and chemical tests, including complete chemical analyses, low-temperature assays, and agglutinating, free-swelling, friability, plasticity, and expansion tests. The Tennessee coal field is a part of the Appalachian field, which extends from northern Pennsylvania to central Alabama. The Jelico bed, one of the most important in the State, is part of the Jellico formation, which is above the Lee formation of the Lower Pottsville. Sewanee coal bed belongs to the Sewanee conglomerate and is stratigraphically lower than the Jellico bed.

The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, is investigating chemical and biological decontamination of complex wastewaters such as tailings pond water containing 280 ppm CN and 5 ppm Se as well as significant concentrations of arsenic, copper, iron, silver, and zinc. The most effective chemical procedure involves cyanide oxidation using hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite followed by selenium reduction using ferrous hydroxide. The effluent contains <l ppm CN and 20 ppb Se; concentrations of other major contaminants meet EPA drinking water standards. Preliminary research indicates that biological cyanide oxidation is possible even in highly alkaline solutions (pH 10.5) containing high cyanide concentrations; indigenous bacteria destroyed 85 pet of the cyanide. Exploratory research shows that other bacteria removed up to 79 pet of the selenium from chemically oxidized, low-cyanide water. These promising results may lead to a final processing scheme that involves a combination of chemical and biological techniques.

A paper is presented in which an innovative biological process is described for the treatment of cyanide-, metals-, and nitrate-contaminated mine process water. The technology was tested for its ability to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and immobilize metals in wastewater from agitation cyanide leaching. A pilot-scale demonstration is described in which a pilot plant was constructed to demonstrate the technology on a mine process waste stream at a mine in Nevada. The demonstration was performed Jointly under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), which is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is jointly administered by the U.S. Department of Energy&apos;s (DOE) Western Environmental Technology Office (WETO) and the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Demonstration Program under Interagency Agreement Number DW89938513-0 I-0. MSE Technology Applications, Inc. (MSE) located in Butte. Montana, was the contractor responsible for conducting the project, and Pintail Systems, Inc., of Aurora. Colorado, was the technology provider. The pilot-scale unit was field-tested at the Echo Bay McCoy/Cove Mine southwest of Battle Mountain, Nevada. The biotreatment process was considered to be successful in destroying cyanide in the mine process water. The process was also determined to be effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized, and nitrates were successfully removed from the mine process water. As a result of conducting these pilot-scale tests, the biotreatment process was concluded to be an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

We evaluated a new process for remediation of acid rock drainage (ARD). The process treats ARD with intermittently fluidized beds of granular limestone maintained within a continuous flow reactor pressurized with CO2. Tests were performed over a thirty day period at the Toby Creek mine drainage treatment plant, Elk County, Pennsylvania in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Equipment performance was established at operating pressures of 0,34,82, and 117 kPa using an ARD flow of 227 L/min. The ARD had the following characteristics: pH, 3.1; temperature, 10 OC; dissolved oxygen, 6.4 mg/L; acidity, 260 mg/5; total iron, 21 mg/L; aluminum, 22 mg/L; manganese, 7.5 mg/L; and conductivity, 1400 uS/cm. In all cases tested, processed ARD was net alkaline with mean pH and alkalinities of 6.7 and 59 mg/L at a CO2 pressure of 0 kPa, 6.6 and 158 mg/L at 34 kPa, 7.4 and 240 mg/L at 82 kPa, and 7.4 and 290 mg/L at 117 kPa Processed ARD alkalinities were correlated to the settled bed depth (p<0.001) and CO2 pressure (p<0.001). Iron, aluminum, and manganese removal efficiencies of 96%, 99%, and 5%, respectively, were achieved with filtration following treatment. No indications of metal hydroxide precipitation or armoring of the limestone were observed. The surplus alkalinity established at 82 kPa was successful in treating an equivalent of 1136 L/min (fivefold dilution) of the combined three ARD streams entering the Toby Creek Plant. This side-stream capability provides savings in treatment unit scale as well as flexibility in treatment effect. The capability of the system to handle higher influent acidity was tested by elevating the acidity to 5000 mg/L with sulfuric acid. Net alkaline effluent was produced, indicating applicability of the process to highly acidic ARD.

In July 1947, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Air Materiel Command, started an investigation of zirconium alloys with the object of determining the suitability of such alloys for high-temperature applications. This report covers the preliminary study of about 25 zirconium-rich alloy systems with respect to preparation, fabrication, tensile properties, metallographic structures; constitution, and heat resistance. Obviously, each system could not be investigated thoroughly, and this publication can be regarded only as a first approach. The more promising individual alloy systems will be studied in greater detail and reported in subsequent publications. The study of zirconium alloys on such a scale has been made possible by the U.S. Bureau of Mines developments in the past 5 years On producing zirconium metal. This basic process is similar to that developed by Kroll for producing ductile titanium metal and consists essentially of reducing zirconium chloride by means of molten magnesium. The Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory at Albany, Oreg., has produced several thousand pounds of ductile metal in this manner and has a pilot plant producing over 300 pounds of metal per week. Alloys were prepared by melting Bureau of Mines zirconium and the best available grade of alloying element in graphite, with suitable provisions for preventing oxidation. The ingots were quartered longitudinally and sheath-swaged at 850° c. to 3/8-inch diameter rod. Two of those rods were send to Wright Field for room-temperature and 1,200° F. tensile properties. The remaining two sections were used for metallographic, hardness, heat-treatment, and heat-resistance studies. The salient features of this investigation are summarized in table 1.

Environmentally assisted cracks in linepipe steels are initiated either as a result of stresses in combination with environmental effects, as in stress corrosion cracking (SCC), or as a result of trapped hydrogen in the steel, as in hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). To understand better the mechanism of the crack initiation process, key metallurgical and environmental elements that can affect the cracking phenomena were investigated and are reviewed in this paper. The complexity of both cracking phenomena results from the dependence of SCC and HIC on multiple metallurgical, mechanical, and environmental parameters that may all influence both crack initiation and propagation; e.g., composition, microstructure and non-metallic inclusions in the steel, applied stress, water chemistry in the field, and ionic concentrations in the groundwater near the pipe surface to name a few for SCC. In addition, for HIC phenomena, one can add the concentration of H2S in the fluids transported in the pipe as well as concentration of CO2, pH, etc. In this paper, cracking of linepipe steels is analyzed critically, with particular attention to the crack initiation process. The paper is divided into two parts: The first part covers SCC and the second covers HIC.

Selenium (Se) based materials find wide applications in rectifiers, solar cells, photographic exposure meters, data storage devices, xerography and anticancer agents. They are also used in the glass industry to eliminate bubbles and remove undesirable tints produced by iron. In addition, Se is highly reactive towards a wealth of chemicals that can be potentially exploited to convert Se into other functional materials such as CdSe, ZnSe, Ag2Se. Here, we report a review of structural investigations of Se based materials in glassy and nanostructured forms. Glasses having varying amounts of Se and Tellurium (Te) were doped with group IV and V elements such as antimony and tin. Structural changes accompanying the composition variation were characterized with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. At the same time Se-Te nanoalloys were synthesized in aqueous micellar phase using Na2SeO3/Na2TeO3 as the Se/Te source. Morphology change from nanoparticles to nanoribbons was investigated using Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM/TEM) techniques. Structural investigations were also done for well defined morphologies of Se based nano-biomaterials obtained in the presence of water soluble protein bovine serum albumin (BSA).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine suitable construction materials for use in brine and steam environments produced from high-salinity geothermal brines. The high-temperature, high-salinity geothermal brines in the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resources Area (KGRA) are a valuable source of energy and mineral values. The brine and steam produced from them are corrosive and cause early failure of many common materials of construction. Mass-loss and electrochemical corrosion measurements were conducted on over 60 metal alloys in brine and steam environments produced from geothermal well Magmamax No.1, located at the Salton Sea KGRA, at temperatures from 1800 to 2150 C, and in synthetic Magmamax brine at 105° and 232° C. General corrosion, crevice and pitting corrosion, and stress corrosion were examined along with the effects of dissolved gases. The alloys with the most acceptable corrosion performance in high-temperature, high-salinity geothermal environments were the high-chromium ferritic stainless steels, the Inconels and Hastelloys, and the titanium alloys. Specific alloys that performed well in wellhead brine included Fe29Cr4Mo, E-Brite 26-1, stabilized Fe26Cr1Mo, 6X, Inconel 625, Hastelloy C-276, Hastelloy S, Hastelloy G, Ti5OA, TiO.2Pd, and TiCode 12.
