The mining industry collects a significant amount of operational data. However, gleaning useful information from the terabytes of data is difficult, and not just because of the sheer volume of the data. Therefore, an automated tool was developed at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to go through data and apply sophisticated statistical and neural network techniques in order to identify the data streams that are important to a process. This paper presents results from the tool as applied to SAG mill data from a gold mine. The results were compared to results achieved earlier with available commercial modeling tools. The comparison indicates that there was little or no loss in performance by automating the very complicated process of neural network modeling. Therefore, the intent of the exercise, to examine if complicated modeling tasks can be automated, was realized. Mining Engineering, 2011, Vol. 63, No. 12, pp. 52-54. The Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT) was established by mining companies in 2006 to influence manufacturer's equipment design through a process of engagement. 2010 EMESRT member companies include Anglo American, Barrick, BHP Billiton, Centennial Coal, Collahausi, Newcrest, Newmont, Rio Tinto, Vale and Xstrata.Driven by a persistent need for retrofits to new equipment, such as haul trucks, EMESRT initially engaged with Surface Equipment Manufacturers including Caterpillar, Komatsu, Leibherr, Hitachi, Le Tourneau and Terex. These OEMs responded positively to the EMESRT initiative, welcoming the opportunity for dialogue with an aligned industry regarding human factors issues related to equipment design, rather than needing to respond to the disparate range of demands for design modifications previously received from individual customers. This engagement process is about making global sustained changes within the OEM organisations and within the mining companies. It is a very international exercise. For example, over two weeks in September 2010, a total of 21 different miners from ten different companies travelled from Australia, South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Singapore and the United States to engage with OEM counterparts who assembled from the United States, Japan, France, Sweden, Finland and Germany. EMESRT Surface Group representatives completed a whirlwind tour of the major North American manufacturers of mining equipment. Starting in Dallas (Atlas Copco, LeTourneau), this tour passed through Gainesville (Sandvik), Newport News (Liebherr), Guelph - Ontario (Hitachi) and Milwaukee (P&H Mining/Joy Global; Bucyrus), before winding up in Peoria, Illinois (Komatsu, Caterpillar). Over nine meetings, this group engaged with 129 individuals from nine OEMs. The EMESRT group welcomed miners from four non-member companies to come along for the meetings. These companies are Syncrude Canada Ltd, the Kearl Oil Sands Project - Imperial Oil (ESSO), Suncor Energy Ltd and Teck Resources Ltd.Other mining industry sectors have now expanded the EMESRT scope from surface mining to include exploration and underground mining equipment. In 2009, EMESRT was organised into four Technical Groups, consisting of EMESRT member company representatives, to focus on engagement with OEMs of surface, underground coal and soft rock, underground hard rock, and exploration drilling equipment. An advisory group has been formed to coordinate activities between all workgroups and provide strategic direction and cohesion between all activities. The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (UQ-SMI) facilitates and coordinates all EMESRT activities on behalf of member companies. Building on successes with individual Surface Mining OEMs, EMESRT now aims to help OEMs in their transition to a sustainable design process that will incorporate and address specific design philosophies at the concept phase of design, so that significant improvements can be made up front for little cost within the overall budget. EMESRT members plan to educate all stakeholders, internally, within their own companies, and externally, by addressing industry associations, regulators and other end users about new ways of evaluating equipment design based on EMESRT purchasing specifications. This presentation will outline the EMESRT approach and report on progress in 2010.

The newest addition to the Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes copper producing complex is a by-product uranium extraction plant which was placed into service in February 1980. The plant is unusual in that it is placed internal to the copper countercurrent decantation, solvent extraction, and electrowinning plant. The plant reached full production within a month and, to date, has produced continually above design rates.

Ventilation of underground workings consists of establishment of such control of air currents that the underground workers may work in safety, with maximum comfort and efficiency, mad without impairment of health; and that the mine openings may be made subject to such control of air flow as to remove from the workings at ordinary times harmful gases and dusts, and at time of emergency, such as fire or explosion, there may be maintained as much or as little air flow as may be desired covering portions of the mine or the mine in its entirety. Control of air flow is the keystone of any ventilating structure, and this very essential feature is obtainable only by the installation of mechanically operated fans, to ether with other ventilating devices such as doors, overcasts, regulators, etc. Every mine, large or shall, coal or metal, should from the outset be equipped with a fan. While much has been written about natural ventilation and many claims have been made that in specific mines there is sufficient natural al" flow, there are few if any mines, coal or metal, where natural ventilation supplies anything like adequately safe or healthful conditions for underground workers even at ordinary times; and at a time of mine fire or explosion the mines depending upon natural ventilation are practically helpless, and certainly are decidedly dangerous to those unfortunates forced to be in them.

The comprehensive scientific development of conventional industrial technologies stimulates the creation of new ones in the next generation. Prof. Akira Yazawa has just accomplished such an important work in the non-ferrous pyrometallurgical field. The results of his successful research are immortal. The research group of the author has conducted since 1985 fundamental studies on the application of sodium carbonate slag to copper fire refining. In the present paper, a calculation method for the distribution ratios of impurity elements between sodium carbonate slag and molten copper will be shown. The specific treatment by sodium carbonate slag will also be presented as an effective way for reducing each impurity content in the molten copper to 0.1 mass ppm, which is the level required for the production of high purity copper. The thinking-out of this evaluation method gets a hint from the Equation (2) in the text which was proposed by Prof. Akira Yazawa.

The Black Mesa coal field is part of the Hopi and Navajo Indian Reservation in Apache, Navajo, and Coconino Counties, Ariz. The field is in an isolated area with the nearest railroad 70 to 90 miles to the south. Travel is restricted by roads that become impassable during inclement weather. The area is a mesa and rises from 500 to 2,000 feet above the surrounding territory. Water is very scarce, and the nearest stream of any consequence is the Colorado River about 90 miles northwest from the center of the field. Coal beds are found in the Mesaverde formation of the Cretaceous age, but they are uncorrelated and range from subbituminous to bituminous in rank. Huddle2/ estimates the reserves of subbituminous coal in Arizona at about 15 billion tons, most of which is in the Black Mesa field. The geology of the field has been reported by Campbell and Gregory.3/ Coal production is small, and the output is used almost exclusively for domestic fuel in the Indian schools, missions, and trading posts.

AN analysis of the bituminous coal situation by an authority who traces the production, mining, safety, markets and labor trends in comparison with other fuels. BEFORE 1918 the production of coal experienced a steady growth, with slight recessions in ouput in only twelve years (1837, 1841, 1852, 1855, 1861, 1874, 1876, 1889, 1894, 1905, 1909, 1914), and in each of these cases the loss was recovered in the following year and the increase continued. In each decade the output was doubled. Prices, while not high, allowed some profit. In 1918 during World War I, an output of 580 million tons was reached and with the exception of 1923 this total was not again reached until 1942, in World War 11. Losses of output in this period were much greater than ever before; in 1932 the total was 270 million tons less than in 1918 or 1923, and the loss after 1923 was not recovered until 1942. The greatest output was 631 million tons in 1947.

It is a pleasure to participate in this Fall meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers to discuss energy conservation trends in the cement industry. Energy is the "life blood" of American industry, and the ability to use available energy resources efficiently may well determine the future of our nation and of its industries. The Federal Energy Administration has classified cement manufacture as one of several energy-intensive industries in the U.S. and has selected the Portland Cement Association to make a detailed study of possible energy conservation measures. Member companies of the Portland Cement Association represent about 85% of the cement producing capacity of the United States and 100% of Canadian capacity. Stated briefly, the purpose of the Association is to extend the uses of portland cement and concrete through research and development, market promotion, education, and public affairs work. PCA's general offices and research laboratories are located in Skokie, Illinois. Our staff of engineers, scientists, and research personnel make the PCA uniquely qualified to perform an energy conservation study of the kind requested by FEA.

A major investigative' program was conducted on the development of an acceptable substitute organic binder for bentonite for the pelletizing of the Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol concentrate. The first phase of the program covered an evaluation of several organic binders in laboratory tire balling in order to identify the most promising potential organic binders. Based on the green ball quality obtained, Peridur C-10, Alchem 8C26 and peat moss were selected for full scale pot-grate testwork. The selected binders were tested with various pelletizing mixes (acid, dolomite, limestone and fully fluxed). The pot-grate test results showed that an acceptable pellet quality can be produced with the use of Peridur C-10.

"This paper will describe the methods and the results of studies to integrate polymetallic nodule extractive metallurgy methods into existing and operating technologies or plants with the aim of reducing the capital cost of deep-sea mining challenges and to streamline the supply chain of raw materials where such opportunities exist (Moa Bay and others). It will also assess the possibility to carry out pre-industrial processing operations with productivity corresponding to pilot mining operation in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (5–10% of assumed annual production) with the use of existing facilities. The present study shows the results of high pressure acid leaching of polymetallic nodules (PN) mixed with laterite non-commercial ore. It also presents PN processing in the presence of ammoniacal tailings obtained from the Caron process. The experiments were carried out according to 24 full factorial design. The regression equations were determined for extractions of Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn. The obtained results show that increasing temperature, the acid/ mineral ratio and the leaching time have a positive and significant effect on extraction of all the studied metals. However, increasing the tailings addition favors the extraction of the Co, Zn and Mn. The extraction of Fe diminishes, while the extraction of Ni is not affected. In the following conditions; 180 min, 260°C, 0.5 kg acid /kg minerals and 2.5 kg PN/kg tailing; the following extractions were achieved; 96% Ni, 90% Co, 97% Cu, 99.9% Zn, 43% Mn and 26% Fe."

The temperature dependency of the low-density viscosity coefficients, ?°T, of helium and of nitrogen, 100° to 1,000° K, is correlated with empirical equations, and the temperature and composition dependencies of the low-density viscosity coefficients, ?°T, of helium-nitrogen mixtures are correlated with the Chapman-Enskog expressions by using the Lennard-Jones (6:12) potential function. The residual viscosity, ?T,P - ?°T (the difference between the viscosity of a compressed gas and the dilute gas at a given temperature), was found to be a function of the thermal pressure coefficient, (?P/?T)V, and two parameters, a and 1, which are characteristic of gas composition. The equation ?T, P = ?°T + a [(?P/?T)V]ß represented 1,340 higher pressure experimental viscosity values with a mean absolute deviation of 0.86 percent, and this equation was used to compute viscosities of the gaseous helium-nitrogen system for a range of temperatures and pressures including those encountered in Bureau of Mines helium purification processes and in a crude-helium conservation gas reservoir. Tabular viscosities for helium, nitrogen, and 13 helium-nitrogen mixtures are presented for 110 temperatures, 133° to 740' K, and 49 pressures in the range 1 to 240 atmospheres. The accuracy of the tabulated viscosities varies because correlation parameters were obtained from experimental data of unequal reliability. It is estimated that uncertainties in the computed viscosity values are ±5 percent for the region 325° to 740° K, ±2 percent for the region 183° to 325° K, and ±5 percent for temperatures below 183° K. The latter uncertainty may rise to y10 percent as critical conditions are approached.

Production of crude petroleum in the Middle East (southwestern Asia) and in South America has increased greatly during recent years and has become a significant factor in the world's production of crude oil. Crude oil from fields in the Middle East increased from 256,164,000 barrels in 1946 to 305,833,000 barrels in 1947 and 417,201,000 barrels in 1948. Production from South American fields increased from 446,417,000 barrels in 1946 to 518,652,000 barrels in 1947 and 574,837,000 barrels in 1948. Crude-oil production from Canadian fields increased from 7,726,876 barrels in 1947 to 12,370,875 barrels in 1948, most of the increase being attributable to two fields, Leduc and Redwater, both represented by analyses in this report. Present indications are that production of crude petroleum from all these regions will continue to increase.

Underground roof geology reconnaissance is being conducted by CONSOL Inc. to enhance mine productivity. Often, roof instability within mine entries is the consequence of highly variable geology that cannot always be detected from information provided by widely-spaced surface core holes. Utilizing a combination of roof drilling data, geophysical logs, and borehole camera and fiberscope observations, roof geology mapping is conducted within longwall development entries in areas of specific concern prior to commencement of longwall mining, Depending on the uniformity of the site-specific roof geology, data point spacing along the longwall development generally ranges from one to five crosscuts. Surface core hole data are correlated with the roof geology mapped underground to validate the underground observations. Detailed roof geology maps can then be produced to enable ground control engineers and mine management to select cost-effective ground control techniques. However, this procedure is not necessary or useful in all situations and it is employed only when there is strong geologic evidence to justify a closer inspection.

"I. IntroductionThe alveolar surface of the lung is covered by two populations of pneumocytes, type I and type II epithelium. The type I cell, which accounts for most of the alveolar surface area and provides a highly specialized barrier for gas exchange (Rannels et al., 1991), is poorly understood. Although approaches to type I cell purification have been discussed, they have not been applied widely because of the lack of phenotypic markers to monitor isolation procedures (Dobbs et al., 1988; Danto et al., 1992). In contrast, the type II cell has been studied extensively, largely because of the development of reliable procedures for its isolation and primary culture. Investigations based on the use of purified populations of cultured type II cells have provided convincing evidence to support a role for the pneumocytes both in the maintenance of normal lung function and in the response of the lung to injury (for review, see Rannels and Rannels, 1989).While type II cells can be isolated by a variety of approaches, the protocols used most commonly are modifications of the gradient method of Dobbs and Mason (1979) or of the panning method of Dobbs et al. (1986). Purification of the cells based on density gradient centrifugation is reliable and consistent, with yields of 30 to 40 X 106 type II cells per rat of 230 g body weight. Isolation procedures applied to a minimum of three to four rats provide the best results, as lower cell yields are common with the use of fewer animals. Toward the goal of maximizing minerals and metals recovery from domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has conducted in situ corrosion studies at the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resources Area (KGRA) in the Imperial Valley, Calif., to evaluate and characterize materials of construction for geothermal resources recovery plants. General-, pitting, and crevice-corrosion characteristics of 13 commercially available alloys were investigated for periods of 15 and 30 days in seven process environments expected to be found in typical geothermal resources plants. Stainless steel alloy 29.4, Inconel 625, and the Hastelloys G, S, and C-276 were the most resistant to general corrosion, did not pit, and exhibited little susceptibility to crevice corrosion. Stainless steel alloys 430, E-Brite 26-1, and 6X had low general corrosion rates, but pitted and were susceptible to crevice corrosion. Stainless steel alloy 316 L had a low corrosion rate, but corroded intergranularly, pitted, and was susceptible to crevice corrosion and to stress-corrosion cracking. Titanium-1.5 nickel and TiCode-12 had low corrosion rates, did not pit, and were not susceptible to crevice corrosion. Carbon and 4130 steels had high corrosion rates, pitted, and had high susceptibilities to crevice corrosion. The major scale-forming mineral on the corrosion samples in most of the process environments studied was galena mixed with lesser amounts of other minerals.

The establishment and survival of different grass species and cultivars on various phytotechnic treatments at a limestone quarry was studied. The treatments applied were: a) bare soil, b) bentonite, c) bentonite-straw and d) asphalt-straw. According to the results, significant differences were found among species and cultivars, growing on different treatments as far as plant growth and survival are concerned. The seed germination was higher on bentonite -straw and asphaltic-straw than on bentonite but the plants survival were higher on bentonite. Lolium perenne had higher seed germination rate and better establishment than the other tested species at all treatments. However, the survival rate of Agropyron desertorum and of the cultivars palestina and chrysopigi of Dactylis glomerata was higher than of the other species.

Underground coal mines have several dangers, one the most hazardous of which is the possibility of an explosion caused by the ignition of methane gas. To reduce ventilation costs, coal mines have the option to close off abandoned areas that are no longer active with structural seals to keep an explosion from propagating into working areas of the mine. These seals must be designed to withstand different pressure levels based on the potential of the atmosphere behind the seal to become explosive, either 50 psi (345 kPa) for inert atmospheres, 120 psi (827 kPa) for non-inert, and over 120 psi (827 kPa) for special cases. Though seals have been designed to resist the overpressure, none have been evaluated for their resistance to the impact of heavy objects. Underground explosions produce high velocity gasses that, traveling through mine openings, may propel objects in the mine at a high velocity causing them to impact and damage the mine seals. Seals damaged in this manner may no longer hold the pressure they were originally rated for and may fail during subsequent explosions or leak explosive gasses into active workings. To test the effects of impact on mine seals, a projectile generator and two seals have been constructed. The projectile generator is a 12-inch (30.5 cm) inner diameter steel pipe with a 4-inch (10 cm) wall, is 8.5 feet (2.6 m) in length, and sealed on one end. Projectiles are propelled by a charge of black powder with a wooden wad and are held in place by foam sabots in the bore. This system, combined with the large bore, allows firing of many different potential projectiles that may be found in an underground mine at a high velocity into the seals. The velocity of each projectile is measured by an infrared chronometer which can later be used to determine its impact energy. Impact effects on the seals are measured using strain gauges, LIDAR scans before and after impact, high speed cameras, and visual inspection. The focus of this paper is on the projectile generator design and initial testing.

Rock burst has always been a major problem in deep underground engineering with high stress, and rock burst strength evaluation has become an important research topic. To effectively predict the rock burst hazard in underground rock mass engineering, a cloud model (CM) rock burst intensity evaluation method based on the CRITIC method and order relation analysis method (G1) was proposed in this paper. First, a rock’s uniaxial compressive strength σc, tangential stress σθ, uniaxial tensile strength σt, ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to tensile strength σc/σt (brittleness coefficient), ratio of tangential stress to uniaxial compressive strength σθ/σc (stress coefficient), elastic deformation energy index Wet, and depth of cover H were selected as evaluation indices of rock burst intensity. Ninety-five groups of rock burst measured data at home and abroad were selected, and the objective weight and subjective weight of each index were calculated by using the CRITIC method and G1 method, respectively. The comprehensive weight was determined according to the combined weighting method of game theory, and the sensitivity of each evaluation index was analyzed. By utilizing a forward cloud generator, the membership degrees of different rock burst grades were calculated, and then the rock burst intensity grades of the samples were evaluated and compared with the evaluation results of the CRITIC-CM method and G1-CM method and the actual grades. Finally, the rock burst classification ability of the model was analyzed. To better verify the accuracy and reliability of this model, the rock burst case of the W39 line in the Chengchao Iron Mine was analyzed by using this model. The research results show that the rock burst evaluation results based on CRITIC-G1-CM are basically consistent with the actual rock burst grade, and the rock burst intensity grade evaluation model has good practicability and reliability.
