The World Financial Center is situated on a 60,000 square meter site at Battery Park City at the southern tip of Manhattan Island. The foundations for the buildings and the related infrastructure posed difficult design and construction problems since the site was filled land in the Hudson (North) River. Foundation construction was made difficult by both the geology and the existence of two railroad tunnels which passed under the site. The soils at the site were unsuitable to support construction of heavy structures, and as a result, all of the foundations had to be carried down to bedrock, or the glacial till over rock. Two buildings were supported on piling and special battered caissons which provided lateral support against wind loading. The other two buildings were supported directly on rock, requiring excavation to depths of 19 meters (63 feet) below grade.

Several mineral process modeling and simulation packages are currently available for use in evaluating the performance of alternative process flowschemes. A critical link that has been missing from these packages is the ability to quantitatively model the effect of size reduction on the liberation of the valuable and waste minerals in the ore being processed. Although there have been several approaches taken to this problem over the past 25 years, none has led to a satisfactory conclusion. A technique has been developed for measuring the effective liberation characteristics of magnetic taconite ores, and a program has been constructed which makes use of these liberation characteristics in simultaneously simulating both size reduction and mineral liberation as it occurs in tumbling mills. This is an especially important step in the modeling of magnetic taconite processes, where magnetic rejection of low grade wastes between grinding stages mandates that a predictive capability be available. The current application is specific to magnetic taconite, but it is possible that a similar approach could be used for other types of mineral systems.

"The development of stirred milling technology has proven to be an enabling technology in fine grained metallic deposits. The increased grinding efficiency allows for the economic size reduction required to produce saleable concentrates. This improvement has opened the door to retreatment projects such as reprocessing of historic gold mine tailings. Recently a VXP2500 stirred mill was installed at Casmyn Mining Zimbabwe Turk mine to allow the reprocessing of historic mine tailings. After commissioning, an extensive joint research project between Casmyn and FLSmidth Minerals was conducted to optimize the performance of the mill. This paper outlines the challenges encountered in the optimization program and the outcomes from the joint research project.INTRODUCTION The development of stirred mills has opened up many new opportunities to recover valuable minerals from refractory ores. Stirred mills have already been reported as an enabling technology for the processing of fine grained ores in lead/zinc applications (Pease, Young and Curry, 2005). Historically, conventional ball mills were unable to economically grind material fine enough to produce the required recovery or concentrate grade. This often resulted in the loss of valuable materials to the final plant tailings. The advent of stirred milling has now provided an opportunity which has both economic and environmental benefits, the reprocessing of historic mine tailings. Many tailings stockpiles now contain economic concentrations of gold because of the ability of stirred mills to efficiently and economically grind the tailings to liberation sizes. The primary advantage of reprocessing historic tailings is very low cost processing. Recovering the tailings is usually as simple as pumping the material into the reprocessing circuit. The disadvantage of reprocessing tailings is the low feed grade and greater difficulty in recovery valuable minerals at the same size distribution. The material has already been previously processed so fresh surface area or an increase in metal exposure is required. These are both provided by regrinding the tailings material."

A calibration of the Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator relates the current in the electromagnet and the transverse slope of the chute to the specific susceptibility at which separation is being effected. In addition to providing a rapid measure of the specific susceptibility of minerals and composite grains, the calibration provides a guide to operation of the Frantz isodynamic separator for mineral separation, and to the nature of composite grains. The most sensitive magnetic separation is obtained by using the highest practicable current and transverse slope, and the lowest practicable longitudinal slope.INTRODUCTIONProbably all minerals have a magnetic susceptibility measurable by sensitive techniques. However, magnetic separation between minerals which have low but different specific susceptibilities, and which for many purposes are considered essentially non-magnetic, has only become practicable with the development of the Frantz isodynamic separator.The construction and principle of this highly sensitive separator has been described by S. G. Frantz as an appendix to a description by 'Gaudin and Spedden (1943) of its application to the separation of sulphides constituting mill products.Various publications (e.g. Hess, 1949, Hutton, 1952) refer to its use in separating the mineral constituents of rocks, ores, and unconsolidated sands.As used in this study the Frantz isodynamic separator consists of a vibrating chute mounted centrally between the pole pieces of an electromagnet (Fig. 1). This unit may be inclined in any direction by the universal mounting, and the electromagnet current is continuously adjustable from 0 to 1·5 amperes.

This publication is the third of a series of reports on hazards and the prevention of accidents at blast-furnace plants that is being published by the Bureau of Mines, Technical Paper 106a being the first and Technical Paper 136b the second of the series. This bulletin, which is arranged in three parts, treats of the causes and prevention of blast-furnace breakouts, explosions, and slips. The first part discusses blast-furnace breakouts, the hazards therefrom, causes, and features of furnace design and methods of operation that tend to prevent breakouts or lessen their number, and points out safety measures to be adopted. The second part takes up the theory and causes of gas explosions at blast-furnace plants and reviews the better methods in use for handling gas. The third part analyzes the causes of hanging and scaffolding in blast furnaces, with the resulting slips that frequently cause injury to the plant and danger to the workmen, describes features of construction and furnace design and methods of operation employed to prevent hanging and slipping, and suggests precautions and safeguards.

In order to meet increasing demands for water supply in the next millennium, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have identified the need for a major new water treatment and transfer scheme. The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. To mitigate and control the combined sewer overflows from 17 outfalls in the City of Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design has revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km(7-miles) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each, and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. This paper discusses the latest development of this tunnel system.

The addition of cement to underground backfill at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, Broken Hill commenced in 1967. A deterioration in metallurgical performance at each concentrator occurred as a result, with increased loss of lead and zinc to residues. Investigations to determine the reasons for this problem and methods to counteract it have been undertaken. This paper outlines the effects of cement on lead-zinc beneficiation at Broken Hill and presents an interim report on attempts to overcome the metallurgical deterioration.

"Abstract A seven storey Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia presented residential apartment complex located in the an opportunity for a novel application of Cutter Soil Mix technology (CSM). The development included a two-level basement for car parking which covered the full site area. However, the basement was also required to extend under an existing single story heritage building. Soil conditions comprised 2m of fill overlying medium dense to dense sands that in turn were overlying a very stiff clay stratum at approximately 14-16m depth. The ground water table was located at a depth of approximately 1m below the natural surface level.A site boundary consisting of a reinforced CSM retention system and was designed and installed to allow the excavation to proceed to basement level. Two rows of temporary soils anchors or inclined struts were required to achieve this. A CSM support system for the heritage building was also designed and constructed to provide temporary support during excavation and permanent construction works. The brief for the contract works emphasised that it was vital that settlements of the heritage building be kept within strict limits.CSM is a relatively new introduction to the Australian construction market, using a modified trench cutter to mix a binder slurry with in situ soils, generally to form cut-off walls, retaining walls and soil improvement works. This project is understood to be first application of the CSM for underpinning work in Australia.This paper discusses the site background details leading to the decision by the client to adopt CSM technology, and the design and construction aspects to meet the challenges offered by this project.Introduction190 Newcastle St is a 7-level residential apartment complex located in the Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia. The development includes a 2 level basement for car parking, which covers the full site area. The Thames Goldfi.eld has been a major gold resource in the west of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, with the Waiotahi quartz vein system forming a large part of the field. Mineralisation is hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks. Both massive columnar-jointed and fragmental volcanic rocks are present. The vein system is dominated by the steeply dipping NE striking Waiotahi-Cambria vein, and associated splays. Hydrothermal alteration increases in intensity from isolated blocks of propylitic altered andesitic material, into the intensely clay altered equivalent. Low rank propylitic alteration is typified by chlorite, calcite and pyrite, with local illite or epidote. Clay alteration is characterised by illite, quartz, kaolinite and pyrite. While broadly forming halos around veining, intense clay alteration also occurs in strongly jointed portions of the hostrock.   Vein textures and the intense illitic clay alteration at Thames are similar to those in some of the other epithermal gold deposits of the Coromandel Volcanic zone, and in deposits of the Philippines, all related to andesitic terranes. Possible causes for textures and alteration being different in these deposits from the more classic Quartz-Adularia-Illite type epithermal systems may be that cooling/mixing rather than boiling dominates fluid evolution. Kaolinite may be also be a product of either of these different fluid types, or has resulted from overprinting of an illitic assemblage by downward percolation of acidic fluid.

Five wells have been drilled in the Basker/Manta Block of VIC/P19, Gippsland Basin, resulting in sub-economic Intra-Latrobe Group oil and gas discoveries at Basker-1 and Manta-1. A total of 21 individual hydrocarbon bearing sandstones were intersected by the two wells. These reservoir sand bodies were deposited by fluvial processes in a lower coastal plain environment. The modelling of sand body orientation and geometry is a critical component in the evaluation of the two accumulations. Seismic resolution of the thin (average 2 m to 5 m) sand bodies is inadequate for mapping their orientation and distribution. Dipmeter data has been successfully applied to the problem of orienting the sand bodies using FMS images acquired during the drilling of Gummy-1 and reprocessed HDT data from Basker-1 and Manta-1. Prediction of lateral extensiveness (geometry) of individual sand bodies has also been attempted. Interpreted palaeocurrent direction from all three wells is dominantly from the NW to the SE. Reservoirs in the Manta-1/Gummy-1 area are interpreted to be predominantly channel sands, deposited by relatively low sinuosity streams. As such they would tend to have a laterally extensive, elongate geometry. Sand bodies deposited in the Basker-1 area show a predominance of laterally accreted cycles deposited by meandering streams. Channel geometry may then be limited in the downstream/upstream direction by internal permeability barriers such as clay plugs.

Uranium exploration over a wide area of the Southern Frame Embayment, South Australia, has defined a number of Lower Tertiary fluvial palaeochannels incised in older rocks. The buried channels contain similar stratigraphicsequences of interbedded sand, silt, and clay, probably derived from the adjacent uranium-rich Olarv Provinee. Uranium mineralization is pervasive within two major palaeochannels, and four small uranium deposits have been found in the basal sands of these channel sequences, at the margins of extensive tongues of limonitic sand.One of the channels is examined in detail with respect to channel morphology, stratigraphy, and rock alteration and the geology and ore controls of the contained uranium deposits are described.A geochemical zonation reflected by variation in limonite, pyrite, carbon, and humic malleI' is defined across one of the deposits. A genetic model is proposed suggesting formation by a uraniferous geochemical cell which migrated down the stream gradient and concentrated uranium on its lateral margins adjacent to the channel bank.

Qualitative analysis of three mineral samples from northern Mozambique was accomplished by X-ray diffraction (XRD), microscopy, scintillation, and magnetic determination. Chemical characterization was accomplished using ICP-OES and pressed powder XRF after dissolution using microwave-assisted digestion and flux fusion. The samples consisted of a mixture of minerals with tantalite as the major component, with minor amounts of microlite, quartz, mica, accessory garnet, and tourmaline. Incomplete dissolution was obtained using microwave digestion, with maximum recoveries of 90.25 ± 0.06% and 88.90 ± 0.04% for Nb2O5 and Ta2O5 respectively. Complete dissolution using Li2B4O7 resulted in recoveries of 98.5 ±0.2% Nb2O5 and 100.4 ± 0.3% Ta2O5.

Current practice in mining frozen, underground placers is to support the mine openings by leaving remnant pillars, which are kept frozen to maintain their stability. These pillars may be partially extracted depending on mining conditions, but this practice may be risky, and roof falls are common. Instead of allowing the mined-out areas to cave, the extracted entries could be filled with waste material, which would then be frozen, using cold ventilation air. A finite difference model for analyzing the effects of various parameters on the freezing of backfill in underground mines in the Arctic has been developed and tested. The model also accounts for properties unique to a frozen rock mass, including those that change with temperature. Examination of the characteristics of ice-cemented mining waste materials as backfill indicates that with proper engineering control, a backfill system can be designed for use in production mines. The system will allow increased extraction ratio while maintaining the stability of underground openings with minimum heat impact on the surroundings. These simulated results establish the relationships among the strength, the temperature, and the freezing characteristics of a given material. When coupled with site observations these relationships will facilitate the optimal design of ore pillar recovery methods.

"The Glencore Raglan mine Concentrator, located in Quebec’s Nunavik region, has been in operation since 1997. The nickel metallurgical plant was originally designed to process 100 tonnes per hour of ore to produce 130 000 tonnes of nickel concentrate per year at 16% Ni. The increased grinding capacity and the discovery of rich ore bodies have increased the annual production to more than 190 000 tonnes of concentrate at 19% Ni. In 2014, the Metallurgical group, with support from BBA, implemented an expert control system on the flotation circuit. This project was initiated to cope with the high variability of the concentrator’s feed. Increasing the plant recovery and final concentrate grade were also important project objectives. The implementation of the expert system ensures better control of concentrate inventory while maintaining maximum plant throughput. This paper describes the successful implementation of the new control system, the control technology selection and the flotation circuit optimization. It will also discuss the performances obtained with this new approach and the improved process stability.IntroductionThe Raglan Mine is located in Northern Quebec along the 62th parallel. It has been in operation since 1997 and was originally designed to produce 130 000 tonnes of concentrate annually at 16% Ni. Wardrop Engineering and the Placer Dome?s Campbell Mine Design Team utilized leading edge directional raise boring techniques and an innovative, remote controlled application of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete ground support to achieve improved mine ventilation and a superior, safety focused secondary emergency egress. While more standardized methods may have provided a sufficient solution to either the requirement for a ventilation raise or for a traditional escape ladder way, innovative methodology ensured both objectives were met with a single, enhanced solution. Placer Dome committed to provide a solution that minimized energy consumption, optimized air delivery and facilitated an escape way focused on minimizing the negative physiological aspects associated with mine evacuation. The project was successful in providing a new airway, returning 47 m3/s (100,000 cfm) from the 39 Level to 30 Level, minimizing risk to the raise equipping crew and providing a fully equipped escape hoist. The resulting secure escape environment provided an efficient means of evacuating personnel working at depth without necessitating a potentially dangerous exhausting climb to surface. The project has substantiated, that optimized safety focused design can be achieved without jeopardizing project economics.

A discussion on simulation tools to aid the development of robotics platforms is presented. The focus of the work is towards mining robotics platforms where operations are typically in unstructured, unpredictable environments and a high degree of dependability in their operations is required. It is argued that a test-based development approach leads to more robust solutions and faster development cycles than traditional single-track field-only development and that the key enabling technology for this development paradigm is the judicious use of simulation tools. The future direction of simulation for use in online applications such as active planning and as a means to assist tele-operation in high latency communication applications is also brief y considered together with the requirements for a useful simulation environment in terms of the simulator architecture. Finally, a case study is presented on the application of the discussed methodologies to an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for earth-moving tasks, which is being developed in an accelerated time frame with a transient development team.

This paper presents the results of a unique study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) from 2016 to 2019 to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations on shale gas well casing integrity and underground miner safety and health. At both deep and shallow cover instrumentation sites, surface subsidence measurements, subsurface in-place inclinometer measurements, and underground pillar pressure measurements were conducted as longwall panels were mined. Comparisons of the deep and shallow cover test site results with those from a similar study under medium cover reveal an interesting longwall-induced response scenario. Under shallow and medium covers, measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are one order of magnitude higher than those measured under deep cover. Conversely, measured vertical compressions under deep cover are one order of magnitude higher than those under shallow and medium covers. However, FLAC3D simulations of the casings indicate that, in all three cases, the P-110 production casings remain intact under longwall-induced deformations and compressions, which has serious implications for future mine design in areas where shale gas wells have been drilled ahead of mining.

Demolition blasting next to an active railroad can be very challenging because of track safety, blasting vibrations, potential track fouling by blast debris, and short work windows on a live track. Recently, in eastern Washington, one of the major railroad companies has been aggressively constructing a second main track to accommodate the expected increase in rail traffic of natural resource products. To accommodate construction of the second line, the railroad company used blasting demolition techniques to remove an old railroad trestle pier on the Milwaukee Road that was in the footprint of the new track bed. The trestle bridged the present rail line and flanked the track with two massive 550-ton (499 tonne) twin-columned steel reinforced concrete piers. The railroad contracted with a specialized contractor to remove the south pier using blasting demolition techniques. The blasting design presented the following challenges: blasting during live track conditions and short work windows; designing a V-notch blast pattern to ensure the pier fell away from the live track; drilling, loading, and timing of the shot; maintaining blasting vibrations at the track below 4 in./sec (102 mm/sec); maintaining ambient overpressure noise below 133 dB; control of fly rock and debris; and track protection and emergency debris removal plan.

De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.
