IN his highly interesting paper on "Piping and Segregation in Steel Ingots,"1 Prof. Howe emphasizes the effect of successive phases of internal pressure in the ingot in the evolution of gas, and the consequent formation of blow-holes. From his statements in other places, it may be inferred that he does not here intend to ignore the other variable factor, temperature, but rather to discuss this one more particularly. At all events, it is my purpose not to engage in controversy with Prof. Howe, but rather to contribute, towards the complete elucidation of this important subject which we all desire, my own views and experience. If, in doing so, I specially emphasize other factors than pressure, I need not be understood as denying what I do not think it necessary to discuss fully. Nor, in presenting my own original conclusions, need I be understood as claiming to be the first who ever reached or announced them. Many things are asserted or suggested upon inconclusive evidence; and to confirm such tentative propositions may be as valuable a service as to overthrow them. In the following passage, Prof. Howe adduces analogies, based upon the behavior of charcoal and of water, respectively, which seem to me questionable "In general, the. solvent power falls as the pressure falls ; and in general it rises as the temperature falls. Thus, to heat a solid, for instance charcoal, may expel part of its dissolved gas ; and a tumbler of water drawn cold from the faucet gradually evolves gas, as it stands and warms up on the sideboard." (p. 238.) Charcoal is a solid body, which has the property not only of absorbing gases in large quantities, but also of expelling the thus absorbed gases upon heating. "The United States’ supply of critical minerals has been a concern and a source of potential strategic vulnerabilities for U.S. economic and national security interests for decades (for example, see Strategic and Critical Minerals Stockpiling Act, 1939). More recently, with the rapid increase in the types of materials being used in advanced technologies (Fortier et al. 2018a), and geopolitical events surrounding the supply of rare earth elements (Ting and Seaman, 2013), among other developments, the critical minerals issue has again achieved a high level of visibility within the U.S. government (Executive Order 13817 (2017)).In this paper, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides an overview of its ongoing focus on critical minerals through the agency’s core competencies in mineral information, mineral resource assessments, geologic and topographic mapping, geophysical surveys and mineral resource research. Aspects of the multifaceted critical minerals issue addressed here include:• Identifying minerals that meet the definition of “critical” provided in Executive Order 13817.• U.S. net import reliance for critical mineral raw materials.• Current status of domestic critical mineral resource assessments.• Current status of topographic and geologic mapping, and geophysical survey coverage of the United States.• The Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI) to support future critical mineral exploration.• Critical mineral potential of waste streams from extractive industries.Identifying minerals as criticalU.S. government agencies and other organizations use a number of existing definitions and criteria to identify a mineral or mineral material as critical, strategic or otherwise important. The executive order defined a “critical mineral” to be “(i) a nonfuel mineral or mineral material essential to the economic and national security of the United States, (ii) the supply chain of which is vulnerable to disruption, and (iii) that serves an essential function in the manufacturing of a product, the absence of which would have significant consequences for our economy and national security.” This definition is broadly consistent with that defined by the National Research Council (NRC, 2008) and may be summarized as “essential in use” and “subject to disruption of supply.” Virtually all of the dozens of critical minerals studies conducted since the 2008 NRC report have used some variation of this same definition (Hayes and McCullough, 2018)."

A injeção de carvão pulverizado (PCI) é uma técnica altamente utilizada nos altos-fornos pelas siderúrgicas brasileiras, buscando a redução do consumo específico de coque por tonelada de gusa. A combustão do carvão pulverizado ocorre em temperaturas elevadas (em torno de 2.000°C), altas taxas de aquecimento (104 a 105 °C/s), tempo de reação de poucos centésimos de segundos, seguida pela gaseificação na presença de CO2. Este trabalho visa apresentar o andamento da construção do simulador da zona de combustão do alto-forno desenvolvido pelo LASID-UFRGS e os estudos previstos nos projetos em andamento, que contemplam também a avaliação de carvões brasileiros que apresentem potencial de substituição de carvões atualmente importados para injeção em altos fornos brasileiros. A partir do levantamento do estado da arte e visitas técnicas a simuladores em operação, foi discutido um projeto moderno, automatizado, de configuração vertical e que possibilitasse a operação tanto em modo one shot como contínuo. Algumas inovações podem ser destacadas, como a possibilidade de alterar o tempo de residência da amostra carbonosa na zona de combustão do simulador, a medição da temperatura com termopares ultra-rápidos (ms), o controle e aquisição de diversos parâmetros termodinâmicos (P, T, t) e avaliação dos produtos sólidos e gasosos resultantes.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has in progress a study or the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. A major problem of this study is to compare the deliveries calculated from the gas pipe-line flow formulas commonly used, with the metered deliveries from pipe lines in operation. In order to obtain such comparisons a series of tests has bean made on 25 operating pipe lines in Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and California ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Study of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines was made under the general supervision of H. "CANMET’s Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories have developed the Canadian Mining Technology Network (CMT-Net), a website to provide industry with up to date information on technologies in several areas. This paper gives background on the Mineral and Metal Processing sector, describes the steps leading to the development of the websites strategy and gives a tour of CMT-Net. IntroductionThe government of Canada is developing a strategy aimed at fostering the development of value-added activities in the area of mineral and metal processing (MMP). Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Industry Canada will partner in delivering on this strategy. Instrumental in defining the main thrusts of the value-added strategy was a series of consultations held across Canada with representatives of companies and organizations active in the sector. The objective of the consultations was to identify barriers to the development of activities which add value in the sector, as well as point to positive factors.Following the consultations, a discussion paper was produced, “From Mineral Resources to Manufactured Products: Towards a Value- Added Mineral and Metal Strategy for Canada” (Natural Resources Canada, 1998). The paper reviews the sector’s structure and main statistical information, lists some of the positive factors and barriers to value-added activities and defines a new partnership between industry and government that will lead to more valueadded activities. The main objective of the paper is to serve as a discussion document between stakeholders during the development of the strategy."

A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved previous to January 1, 1942, was published In Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The present list covers additional equipment approved during the calendar year 1942. The items have been numbered to indicate the order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gives four air compressors on the Bureau's active list, and the present circular gives the fifth to be approved. Items 90 and 94 under Loading; Machines land Conveyors also appear in Information Circular 7207. These numbers are repeated hero to show that approval was granted during 1942 for additional voltages on machines previously listed one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those which may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that arc available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining. The present paper and Information Circular 7207 together give the complete list of all available permissible .Mine equipment.

"The morphology of the surface of sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite and the adsorption of butyl xanthate under conditions of preliminary treatment of minerals by the products of water electrolysis were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Diffuse Reflection Infrared Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). It was determined that practically all types of treatment by electrochemically modified water (a product of non-diaphragmatic treatment, anolyte and catholyte) lead to an increase of surface roughness of the studied minerals due to formation of small rounded shape particles. In contrast to that, after treatment of chalcopyrite by anolyte, its surface becomes smoother. Various effects of treatment by the water electrolysis products on the adsorption of chemical and physical forms of butyl xanthate on the studied sulfides were established. As a result, the efficiency of the complex of AFM and FTIR methods, as one of the ex-situ approaches for monitoring the surface state of sulfide minerals and direct investigation of BKx adsorption products was demonstrated.INTRODUCTION In mineral processing, copper-zinc sulfide ores are one of the most complex products in view of their mineral composition, fine dissemination, complex inter-growth and the proximity of the technological characteristics of copper, zinc and iron sulfides. For the most complete disintegration, fine grinding of ores to a size of 0.074-0.044 mm is necessary. Consequently, the main method for processing of such ores is flotation, which bases on the difference in physical and chemical properties of the mineral surfaces, in particular, degree of wettability. The separation of copper and zinc minerals and their separation from ferrous and other sulfides, sulfosalts and rock mineral is a very difficult task (Chanturiya, 2000). For the successful separation of copper and zinc minerals in the appropriate selective concentrates, it is necessary to find conditions for the most complete liberation of ore and rock-forming minerals and for increase the contrast in physical and chemical properties of their surfaces. Despite significant progress in the processing of copper-zinc sulfide ores, the problem of the selectivity of the separation of the main ore minerals has not yet been fully solved and requires innovative approaches (Chanturiya, 2015). To date, various methods of preliminary energy processing of complex ores are used: magnetic pulse treatment, impact by high-voltage nanosecond pulses, electrochemical effects (including products of water electrolysis (Chanturiya et al., 2014; Bunin et al., 2015; Chanturiya et al., 2014a; Chanturiya et al., 2016), processing with flotation reagents, etc. Electrochemical treatment of water in various modes allows to obtain products of electrolysis with different oxidation-reduction properties: acid anolyte with a high oxidation potential and dissolved oxygen content, an alkaline catholyte with high reducing properties and a product of non-diaphragmatic treatment with enhanced reduction properties."

This Bureau of Mines report discusses tests conducted with four different catalytic reactor designs to determine the influences of exhaust treatment systems on emissions from diesel engines. Although there was significant differences in oxidation efficiencies at light to intermediate engine loads, all four catalysts were very effective in reducing emissions at heavy loads. Compositional determinations included carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, aldehydes, sulfur dioxide, sulfates, and particulate loading. Particulate size, exhaust odor intensity, and the character of the unburned hydrocarbon component were also determined.

The reduced need for traditionally trained and educated personnel in the mining industry is systemic to the changing mining industry. Universities and other training institutions are meeting the traditional skill needs required by the industry, but are the skill needs going to be the same in the near future? The answer may be no. Mining is changing because of increased liabilities and costs of environmental and safety is-sues; lower grades of minerals in traditional mining activities and the advent of new bio-chemical processes and robotic equipment. More productive and economic alternatives, and larger, more sophisticated and automatic equipment, are also changing the industry. Engineering is more specific, accurate, precise and expensive. Measurement is more thorough and timely of progress, production, costs and productivity. And, the industry will likely be engaging in more undersea mining, possibly space-based processing, less human interaction and more remote control of events than was previously thought possible.

A “Terra de Sucata” é o coproduto gerado pelo processo de beneficiamento de sucata na indústria siderúrgica. Atualmente, a aplicação desse coproduto é limitada pela falta de uma caracterização completa do mesmo. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho visa à caracterização de tal material para viabilizar o levantamento das possibilidades de aproveitamento do mesmo. A amostragem foi feita em uma usina siderúrgica localizada na cidade de Cariacica, no Espírito Santo. Foram realizadas análises via Difração de Raios-X (DRX) e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura acoplada à Espectroscopia de Energia Dispersiva (MEV/EDS). Além disso, foram feitas a determinação de pH, distribuição granulométrica, teor de umidade, densidade e análise elementar. A partir desses experimentos, observou-se que se trata de um material bastante heterogêneo em termos de morfologia, composição e granulometria, o qual apresenta 6,43 ± 0,15 de pH, 4,53% ± 0,92% de teor de umidade e 2,25 g/cm³ ± 0,25 g/cm³ de densidade. Esse material é composto pelos elementos ferro, alumínio, silício, cálcio, zinco, magnésio, manganês, fósforo, enxofre, carbono, titânio, potássio e sódio. A partir da análise de DRX, foi possível identificar a presença das fases quartzo, hematita, calcita, óxido de ferro (II) e outras.

"This is a report on the combined application of ""long-chain"" flocculants and classifier cyclones in the field of slimes treatment, with emphasis on the simultaneous thickening and clarifying of industrial effluents, at low cost. The principle of the process described below involves: (1) the formation of small floes of relatively great strength, by sequential dispersion and conditioning, with average floe size of about 1501 microns; (2) the floes being of sufficient strength to withstand the shearing forces operating within a cyclone and consequently behaving as solid particles with an equivalent diameter (Stokes) that exceeds the size cutpoint of the classifier cyclone; (3) the removal of flocculated solids by means of a classifier cyclone the size cutpoint of which permits effective separation of these solids from the water. Results of test work to date indicate that a broader use of cyclones in industry is possible with the above types of flocculants because the submicron particles and colloidal material are readily collected and clear water is produced, with the attendant advantages of compact construction and low cost that are characteristic of centrifugal separation. The process generally permits classifier cyclones of medium throughput capacity (e.g. 12-in. diam.) to be used for clarifying effluents that contain minus 10-micron particles."

Introduction The Porcupine district of northern Ontario has yielded over $300,000,000 in gold during its twenty-three years of mining operations. It thus ranks among the foremost gold producing areas of the world. Of this $300,000,000 already produced from the District, the Hollinger mine has furnished over 60 per cent and stands as one of the greatest gold mines of all time. In 1929, the Hollinger Directors decided to supplement the current geological and development work by an intensive investigation of the geology of the mine. This special study, begun in June of that year, was completed in October, 1932. An account of the geology of the mine in a degree of detail commensurate with the intensity of the study is in course of preparation. But the widespread interest manifested at the present day in gold occurrence generally, in Canadian gold deposits, and in the specific results of the investigation at Hollinger, appears to justify the immediate presentation of a highly abridged summary of our principal findings, insofar as they relate to the more general and scientific phases of the geological situation. Those conclusions having direct bearing on operating and exploratory policy are not dealt with here. The present preliminary paper, therefore, records chiefly the conclusions reached, with little incorporation of supporting argument or evidence. While intended to give a reasonably balanced perspective of Hollinger geology, the condensed presentation naturally emphasizes those views which are not in complete accord with accounts hitherto published regarding this district.

"In May 2015 the New Monte Bianco aerial cableway, operating on the Italian side, have been completed. It connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 metres above sea level (m a.s.l.)) with the intermediate station at Pavillon de Mont Frety (2160 m a.s.l.) and with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3460 m a.s.l.). A new underground link between Helbronner Peak and New Torino Refuge has also been built. The link is divided into two different sections: the first one, a 70 meters deep vertical pit created using the “Raise Boring”, descends underground from Helbronner Peak station; the second section, a 160 meters long sub horizontal tunnel, emerges at Torino Refuge. After a first introduction focused on the general layout of the project, the paper will present the geomechanical survey aimed to evaluate the effect of permafrost on the stability of intensely fractured granitic mass. Finally, it will describe the relevant issues related to the highest construction yard in Europe (3400 m a.s.l.): difficult conditions such as extremely cold and windy weather and restricted spaces. INTRODUCTION The new cable way connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 m a.s.l.), close to Courmayeur, with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3462 m a.s.l.) and its territory, as well as links with France and, through the French territory, with the town of Chamonix (1000 m a.s.l.). The overall layout is divided into two sections (as shown in Figure 1): the first section, “Pontal d’Entreves – Mont Frety”, has a length of 1700m, elevation differential of 886m, a capacity of 800 persons/hour and cable cars for 80 passengers; the second one, “Mont Frety – Punta Helbronner”, has a length of 2630m, elevation differential of 1276m, a capacity of 600 persons/hour, and cable cars for 75 passengers. The new system is designed for fully rotating cable cars moving at a constant rate of 9.0 m/s. The track requires constructing special cables supports, three for the first section and two for the second one."

It is becoming increasingly difficult to secure local aggregate resources that meet quality standards and local restrictions without conflicts with other land uses and environmental regulations. The successful integration of natural-resource information into land-use decisions is becoming increasingly important as the needs for both land and resources become more numerous, complex and urgent. Well-reasoned decisions about land-use are crucial to the Nation if infrastructure resources are to remain economically available. Provisions for uninterrupted future supplies of aggregate should be made using proper long-range planning that incorporate a multiple land-use program. That program would include identification and protection of natural resources, strategies that will permit development of resources according to future market needs and environmental considerations, and the beneficial reclamation of mined-out areas.

Completion of the Hall Street Coal Transfer Terminal in St. Louis marks the beginning of a major shift in the movement of coal to the power generating stations of the Midwest and South Central regions of the United States. The location of the terminal is significant. The 10 million ton- per-year facility is the first high capacity rail-to-barge transfer terminal to be built on the western shore of the Mississippi. This terminal and others to follow will link the massive coal fields of the West with the high coal consuming markets adjacent to the 25,000-mile Inland Waterway System.

The mine and treatment plant of the Teziutlan, unit of the Mexican Corporation, S. A., are located at Aire Libre, in the District of Teziutlan, near the northwest edge of the State of Pueblo, Republic of Mexico. The property is leased from the Teziutlan Copper Co. The town of Teziutlan is the terminus of a branch railroad starting from Oriental Junction or the Mexico-Jalapa-Veracruz narrow-gage system of the National Railways of Mexico. A branch line 18 km in length from Teziutlan to Aire Libre belongs to the Teziutlan Copper Co. and is leased and operated in conjunction with the mine.

"The crushed-stone industry has long been troubled with the problem of producing a more or less cubical product for use as concrete aggregate. Its seriousness varies widely for each producer, depending upon the character of the rock employed for raw material and the ultimate use of the crushed stone. For many construction uses, such as the macadam or bituminous-concrete- type road, flat pieces are not objectionable and may even be preferable to more cubical rock. However, most specifications for concrete require that the stone must be reasonably free from flat and elongated pieces.The rigid specifications set by many contractors have resulted in the rejection of coarse aggregate that, except for the presence of an excessive amount of flat and elongated pieces, would be entirely acceptable. In many instances, if an efficient, economical method of removing flat and elongated pieces were available, local producers could meet the requirements of the contractor and thus eliminate the necessity for importing more cubical material.A brief investigation of the problem of removal of flat and elongated pieces from crushed aggregate, carried out at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, indicated that it is mechanically possible to remove flat pieces from crushed rock.TEST EQUIPMENTA number of mechanical devices are used by the coal industry for separating slate from coal; these depend upon the difference in shape of the crushed slate as compared with the coal. Such devices as shutter screens, spiral separators, and the Norman picker would be suitable for removing flat pieces from crushed rock in the same manner as they are used by the coal industry. None of these devices was immediately available for testing purposes, so an attempt was made to construct a simple device that could be used in commercial operations."

This study was made to determine trends in fresh water usage by California petroleum refineries, to forecast fresh water requirements to 1975, and to evaluate water conservation practices. Statistical data used in the study were obtained largely from published sources and from records of selected companies. An adequate sampling of the State's refining capacity was obtained, and the data were extrapolated to the total California refining capacity. A breakdown of the data was then made on the basis of the following refining regions: (1) the Los Angeles Basin and Southern Coastal region, (2) the Southern San Joaquin Valley, and (3) the San Francisco Bay area. An unpublished forecast of crude oil input to refineries by a major oil company operating on the West Coast was used as a basis for predicting fresh-water usage. The 1963 fresh water intake by California petroleum refineries was 84 million gallons per day. This is expected to increase to 128 million gallons per day by 1975. The fresh-water to crude-oil ratio is increasing in all regions except the Southern San Joaquin Valley. At present, the supply of fresh water available to almost all of the State's petroleum refineries, mostly from surface sources and company-owned wells, is adequate, although shortages may develop within the foreseeable future. Present conservation methods are centered around the following four objectives: (1) minimum intake of fresh water of the lowest possible quality commensurate with sound technologic practice; (2) optimum recirculation; (3) proper treatment before discharge; and (4) substitution of air cooling for water cooling.

"The flow properties of the blast furnace slag bearing high TiO2 at high temperature like the viscocity may change a lot due to the formation of the carbonitride inside, causing serious problems on the separation between the metal and the slag. Therefore, the critical condition of the formation of Ti(C,N) in blast furnace is vital importance for the ironmaking process with iron ore bearing titania. In this study, the formation of Ti(C,N) in blast furnace and the influences of various factors on the Ti(C,N) formation are investigated by FactSage. It is found that the mass of Ti(C,N) would reach the maximum at 1480 oC, and the product is mainly TiN below 1620 oC, while it is mainly TiC above 1620oC. The order of the factors by the importance from strong to weak was: temperature, the content of TiO2 in slag, basicity of slag, the content of MgO and Al2O3.IntroductionThe titanium dioxide (TiO2) in iron ore bearing titania will be partly reduced by carbon to titanium carbonitride (Ti(C,N)) in blast furnace, causing serious problems on the separation between the metal and the slag because of the change of flow property. Therefore, the critical condition of the formation of Ti(C,N) in blast furnace is vital importance for the ironmaking process, especially for the smelting of iron ore bearing titania. Extensive experimental data in regard to the formation of Ti(C,N) has been reported in numerous papers[1-6]. However, only some discrete data can be obtained by experiment, and it is difficult to detect the mass of Ti(C,N) in slag. In addition, the experiment is difficult to be proceeded when the temperature is above 1600oC. Therefore, it is very difficult to make clear the critical condition of the formation of Ti(C,N) by experiment."
