The current Queensland Government’s rehabilitation guidelines for post-mining landforms present a hierarchy of preferred outcomes for different areas within the mine site (see Figure 1). Within all areas, restoration of a ‘natural’ ecosystem is clearly prioritised as the preferred end land use, although it is not a mandatory practice. Beyond the official guidelines, there is also an implied preference for renaturalisation echoed in most environmental impact assessments and closure plans (Lamb, Erskine and Fletcher, 2015). In practice, however, ecosystem restoration does not extend to construction of a realistic topographic form, largely rejecting the ‘natural’ aesthetic implied by ecosystem restoration in favour of adopting a functional aesthetic in deference to standard engineering criteria.This presentation argues that the established disconnection between actual and implied landform aesthetics is indicative of a wider problem around end landform planning. It contends that such disconnects are the result of the impact of competing ‘ways of seeing’ (Bradley and Kearney, 2007) the same landscape, and reflect the struggle between, and inclusion of, these differing perspectives within the planning process itself. We propose that recognition of the complexity of landscape perceptions is key to improving post-mining landscape outcomes, and the misalignment between land use values and landscape aesthetics can be addressed by establishing an overarching framework for landscape preferences. As such, we outline the reality of stakeholder landscape preferences, and present a critical response to current planning practices within the life-of-mine (LOM).CITATION:Hine, A and Erskine, P, 2016. Overhand cut-and-fill mining of narrow vein orebodies inevitably leads to the creation of horizontal pillars. As the thickness of the overlying crown pillar diminishes, stresses build up in the pillar. More often than not, this situation causes an increased level of seismicity and possible pillar burst. One well-known strategy to reduce the hazard of crown and sill pillar burst in cut-and-fill vein mining is that of destress blasting. The paper first reviews the methods used for the monitoring and assessment of potential pillar burst in narrow vein cut-and-fill mining. The influence of horizontal stress, mine depth and pillar thickness on stress build-up in the crown pillar is examined through a characteristic narrow vein numerical model. The paper then presents, with reference to three mine case studies, the benefits of destress blasting and the factors affecting its success as a ground control technique.

Removal of S02 from smelter gases is being investigated, using an innovative technique that results in the almost simultaneous recovery and production of elemental sulfur. S02 is removed from the gas stream by scrubbing with suitable aqueous salt solutions or high-boiling organic fluids. The S02-laden liquor is then reacted with H2S Crystalline, high-purity sulfur is instantly precipitated and, after filtration, the regenerated liquor is recycled. The H2S required for the process is produced by reacting a portion of the recovered sulfur with hydrogen or with methane and steam. The chemistry and results of preliminary laboratory research are discussed.

JUST as 85 per cent of the total ore produced annually in the United States comes from the Lake Superior region, so does one of its six producing districts-the Mesabi --dominate that region both as to production and total reserves; also in ore Treatment, Mesabi practice is dominant. Therefore, in discussing future reserves or ore treatment one may visualize one big district with five smaller districts as so many satellites. In considering the future less thought need be given to processes than to, economic policies. For thirty years experimental work has now been in progress and every possible ore-treatment process now known has been given attention. This work was started when there was no recognizable danger of running short of ore because of rapid consumption. Thirty years ago the annual production had just progressed beyond the twenty-million bracket for the first time. Today fifty million tons is considered a small production, and last year the aim was for 65 million. At the recent rate of production the life of the estimated reserves of good ore is about 35 years. All who know the local terrain are convinced that, unlike thirty years ago, the chances for discoveries of new big deposits are nil; treatment of lean ores obviously is to become an all-important topic.

"The increasing use of coated magnesium in consumer products results in creation of coated Mg scrap during product manufacture and after End-of-Life product treatment. Currently this material is generally not recycled, leaving a material resource unused. Closure of the magnesium cycle in a sustainable manner is necessary. In order to do so, the effect of coatings on the recycling process has to be quantified, predicted and minimized. For this purpose metrics have been developed, based on first principles supported by detailed understanding of the recycling process. The developed 3D metric enables quantitative assessment of the recyclability and links coating design, product design and recycling to each other in a visual manner. The parameters that form the metric can be measured and predicted, hence an engineering basis for Design for Sustainability of coated magnesium is provided.IntroductionEvery product progresses through the four phases of the product life cycle depicted by figure 1. In each phase residues are created. Their amount and composition is largely determined by the complex material combinations created/invented during product design in the manufacture phase. Compared to the ideal cycle the magnesium cycle is far from closed (fig. 2). Most noticeable is absence of the link between the EoL phase and raw materials production. A closed cycle only exists for class 1 scrap, which goes from the product manufacture phase directly to production from industrial material and returns to the manufacture phase as magnesium alloys. The four problematic streams are marked by ???. Coated semi-products are present in two of the four residues, namely in rejects and collected scrap. When these semi-products are recycled the amount and composition of the dross and salt slag residue is affected as well.During product design selection of the coating takes place, fixing the coating character¬istics and properties from this moment on for the rest of its life cycle. The choices made in the manufacturing phase are therefore critically linked to the recyclability of coated semi-products as well as the sustainability of the magnesium cycle as a whole. Sustainable closed life cycles, in which the quality of materials is preserved and residue creation and resource depletion are minimized, can be attained by selecting the appropriate alternative during product design. To realize this the effect of design choices on the life cycle and more specific the recycling process has to be known and quantified."

Os materiais cerâmicos são essenciais para o desenvolvimento da humanidade. O homem os utiliza para os mais variados fins, desde a confecção de utensílios domésticos até a produção de peças de alto desempenho tecnológico. Neste sentido, são extremamente necessárias à produção de pesquisas científicas para prospectar novos materiais para a indústria cerâmica. As argilas são consideradas o principal componente para fabricação de massas cerâmicas. Para produção de peças de cerâmica branca, revestimentos e outras categorias cerâmicas onde a coloração clara é prioridade, usam-se argilas cauliníticas. Todavia, esse tipo de argila possui pouca ocorrência na esfera terrestre, em comparação com outros tipos, tais como as argilas de coloração vermelha. Por tal motivo, encontrar novas jazidas de argila caulinítica para abastecer à indústria ceramista é extremamente imprescindível. Nesse sentido, objetiva-se com esse trabalho caracterizar uma argila caulinítica proveniente de uma jazida localizada no município de São Gonçalo do Amarante, região metropolitana de Natal-RN. O referido trabalho configura-se como a primeira parte de uma caracterização do material estudado. Sendo reservado para esse artigo os ensaios físicoquímicos e na segunda parte os ensaios tecnológicos. A caracterização fisioquímica foi realizada através das seguintes análises: DRX, FRX, Análise Granulométrica (AG), Dilatometria e ATG/DTG. Os resultados obtidos demostram a viabilidade técnica da utilização do material para fabricação de produtos cerâmicos, tais como: telhas, lajotas, revestimentos e outros materiais cerâmicos.

Antimony oxide ores are important antimony resources, but their recovery is still a problem. In this paper, the adsorption behaviour and mechanism of dodecamine and quaternary ammonium salt on the surface of cervantite and quartz were investigated. The flotation behaviour of cervantite and quartz using quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine as collectors was studied by single mineral flotation experiments. The adsorbed amount was measured and infrared spectroscopy was used to study the ability of several cationic collectors to float cervantite and quartz. The results show that quaternary ammonium salts can simultaneously float the cervantite and quartz. It is difficult to achieve separation of the two minerals using quaternary ammonium salts as collectors. At pH>10, dodecylamine can float quartz but not cervantite, which can achieve reverse flotation separation of the two minerals. The difference between the abilities of quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine to float cervantite and quartz lies in the different ionisation properties of the two reagents. Quaternary ammonium salt is a strong electrolyte that is completely ionised in the pulp and exists mainly in the form of quaternary ammonium ions. "Vanadium has been produced from a variety of sources. This metal is known to make aqueous solutions of complex speciation as a function of vanadium concentration and pH. Considering the method of leaching, the impurities in the pregnant leach solution, and the planned vanadium product, different extractants and flowsheets can be applied for solution purification. This paper reviews the purification of vanadium leaching solution using organophosphorus, solvating, and amine extractants. This review focuses on vanadium separation from iron, molybdenum, and uranium, which are often present in vanadium resources such as primary ores, fly ashes, and spent catalysts.RÉSUMÉ Le vanadium est produit à partir de diverses sources. Ce métal est connu pour permettre des solutions aqueuses de spéciations complexes en fonction de la concentration du vanadium et du pH. En tenant compte de la méthode de lixiviation, des impuretés dans la solution mère de lixiviation et du produit de vanadium planifié, divers agents d’extraction et schémas de traitement peuvent être mis en oeuvre pour purifier la solution. Le présent article étudie la purification de la solution de lixiviation du vanadium au moyen d’extractants organophosphorés, solvants et aminés. L’étude cible la séparation du vanadium du fer, du molybdène et de l’uranium, lesquels sont souvent présents dans les ressources de vanadium telles que les minerais primaires, les cendres volantes et les catalyseurs usés."

The Airborne Thematic Mapper is an eleven channel digital scanner which acquires image data in the visible, near infra-red, short wave infra-red and thermal infra-red wave- lengths. A description of the system is presented which includes details of the operating wavelengths and performance parameters of the scanner. Consideration is also given to the aircraft installation requirements. During January 1984 the scanner surveyed the mineral rich areas of Leonora, Laverton and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. This is a region of intense exploration activity for gold and base metals. Some 30,000 square kilometres were systematically surveyed in a period of ten days. This scanner was flown at 7,000 metres altitude giving a ground pixel size of 17.5 by 17.5 metres. The flight line spacing was 8 kilometres. The overall project took some thirty days from conception to completion. The planning and execution of this operation are described in detail. The resulting magnetic tapes provided 11 channels of digital image data over a 30,000 square kilometre area and a variety of image processing techniques were employed in order to capitalise fully on the results. The imagery provides a powerful tool for the geological mapping of the terrain. The data can also be used to monitor the environmental effects of mining operations.

Shortly after becoming one of the van-guard of mine-developers in the State of Virginia, during the year 1883, I called the attention of the Institute to certain deposits of pyrites, which have been largely worked since. In all cases these deposits are covered with iron-ore (limonite), extending 40, 50 or 60 feet from surface to water-level. The several classes of brown iron-ores are found almost continuously along a prominent ridge of mineral-bearing slates, which can be traced from the James river northeasterly to the North Anna, the Rappahannock and the Potomac rivers, crossing the counties of Louisa, Spottsylvania and Stafford. Outcrops are plainly discoverable from end to end of this belt, also, in places, to the right and left of it, and at intervals there are evidences of workings, some of them for known purposes and others of unknown age and meaning. These old workings have an interest aside from the minerals they may contain or may have yielded. I have been engaged during the past five years in the collection of facts concerning them, which might determine definitely the site of those iron-furnaces, placed by tradition within reach of " the towne called Germanna," which were the first ever built in this State or on this continent. The events which led to the establishment of this important industry are sufficiently narrated in a paper written by Mr. R. A. Brock, Secretary of the Virginia Historical Society, and printed in the Proceedings of the National Museum, 1885, page 77, from which I quote the following : " To Virginia, the first of the English settlements in America, belongs the honor of inaugurating within her limits, as a colony, that most important industry, iron manufacture. The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern QuTbec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed by ultra-fine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultra-fine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulfides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 ¦ and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3 per cent S, 0.07 per cent Cu and traces of antimony (0.03 per cent). The mineralogical characterisation showed the presence of 65 per cent gangue minerals, 23 per cent pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6 per cent arsenopyrite, 2.2 per cent pyrite and 0.08 per cent chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05 per cent) and sphalerite (0.03 per cent). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3 - 5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20¦C and for 72 hours extracted 97.0 per cent Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7 per cent Au extraction. A 16-hour pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-hour cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5 per cent. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0 per cent. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2 per cent. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80 per cent. Efficient cyanidation of an ultra-fine sulfide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultra-fine sulfide concentrates. The high addition of lead nitrate would certainly make cyanide destruction easier; consequently reducing the effluent treatment costs and making possible to meet the discharge regulations criteria.CITATION:DeschOnes, G and Fulton, M, 2013. In an effort to recover Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) that had leached into bedrock below the Hudson River in Upstate New York, a shaft and tunnel complex was designed that would allow installation of inclined and vertical wells into the zones of contamination to recover PCB’s by gravity. A joint venture of Merco Inc., of Lebanon, NJ, and Obayashi Corporation, of San Francisco, CA, was awarded the contract for constructing the first Tunnel Drain Collection System in the world. Conventional drill and blast techniques were the most economical method to construct the project but due to the presence of PCB’s and community concerns, innovative drill and blast practices were needed.

Comminution continues to be the most capital-intensive unit operation in mineral processing. The fundamental purpose of comminution is to liberate the valuable minerals so that they can be economically concentrated into saleable products. Declining ore quality characterised by lower grade and increased complexity requires significant energy consumption for comminution. Low-grade magnetite ores are typically fine-grained and require fine to ultra-fine grinding (P80 ~ 30 - 40 µm) to enhance its liberation from the typically siliceous gangue matrix. Historically, this has been achieved using multi-stage crushing and grinding technologies, which require high energy consumption with low energy efficiency. This motivated innovations in energy efficient technologies for comminution. Such technology has been developed in the IMPTEC super-fine crusher. It is an innovative, dry (with the potential to be operated wet), media-free, energy efficient crusher that can to reduce 10 mm feed particles to 19 – 30 µm with very low recycle loads. In this study, the mineralogical and physicochemical characteristics of crushed magnetite ore using the IMPTEC super-fine crusher have been investigated in comparison with those of rod milling. The super-fine crusher generated higher liberated magnetite minerals in the – 300 + 212 µm and < 45 µm size fractions compared to rod mill. Both comminution devices generated large low-grade hematite and goethite middlings. However, the rod mill produced higher locked/unliberated hematite and goethite compared to that of the super-fine crusher. Quartz mineral had the highest liberation irrespective of the comminution device used. The super-fine crusher generated higher entrapment of other minerals within the silica matrix compared to the rod mill. The breakage mechanism of the super-fine crusher which is predominantly through high compression with shear, generated improved mineral liberation in the coarse size fractions compared to the predominant abrasion and attrition breakage mechanisms of rod milling. The higher mineral liberation generated by the rod mill is potentially due to the prolonged batch milling of the ore compared to the single-pass open circuit of the super-fine crusher.CITATION:Baawuah, E, Kelsey, C, Kelly, J R, Addai-Mensah, J and Skinner, W, 2018. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi caracterizar a camada de óxido formada na superfície externa de tubos de reforma retirados de serviço após diferentes tempos de operação, em função da temperatura em que os mesmos estão expostos que varia com altura dos tubos. A caracterização consistiu da análise morfológica da camada de óxido utilizando um microscópio eletrônico de varredura de alta resolução e mapeamentos de composição química por EDS para verificar a distribuição dos óxidos presentes na mesma. Observou-se que a distribuição dos diferentes óxidos apresentou uma sequência padrão e que a camada de óxido aumenta com a temperatura e tempo de operação, bem como a camada subsuperficial empobrecida de carbetos de cromo.

"There are significant ground support hazards to both personnel and equipment when longwall equipment must mine through cross-panel entries. Backfilling support strategies are often cost prohibitive. Additionally, it is often very difficult to install backfill material in full contact with the mine roof in backfilled entries. This paper will demonstrate the use of fiber-reinforced concrete crib material as a method for standing support in longwall cut-through entries. Despite conceptions of poor performance in potentially high convergence environments, fiber-reinforced concrete crib material can be used in longwall support environments subject to high abutment loads and convergence. Central to the proper design of these supports is the use of yield material between crib layers and at the mine roof/crib interface. The placement location of cribs within the cut-through entry has a significant effect on the main roof behavior and associated ground conditions in the longwall abutment zones. It is particularly important to engineer the proper load displacement characteristics of the installed crib to support expected ground conditions. The cost of fiber-reinforced crib supports is less than 50% of backfilling methods.INTRODUCTIONThe design and execution of a longwall cut-through is perhaps one of the most difficult and risky endeavors in the field of ground control. The magnitude of abutment loads and potential for ground failure present a significant safety hazard to underground personnel. In addition, there is significant financial risk, with replacement costs of face equipment exceeding $200 million. Faced with these consequences, it is both advisable and common for an engineer to design ground support with a significant margin of safety. This paper outlines a robust support system that possesses a significant margin of safety along with significantly lower costs than most other support systems employed in similar conditions.SITE PARAMETERSThe mine site described in this study operates in the Herrin No. 6 seam in southern Illinois. The seam height is typically 76- 84 inches. Mining height in gateroads and mains is typically over 96 in, and typical mining height on the longwall face is 82 in. The overburden depth is 950-970 feet in the area of the longwall cutthrough."

Através de ensaios de compactação a forma de ocorrência da água pode ser inferida. A água no estado pendular e funicular ficam retidas por capilaridade no leito. Parte da água instersticial e a água livre podem ser drenadas, por gravidade ou com aplicação de vácuo, mas nunca atingindo o valor de umidade onde ocorre um mínimo na curva de densidade aparente.

There exists a wide array of industrial by-products that can be shown to produce beneficial responses in the soil/plant environment. These materials range from clean coal technology residues produced in the generation of electric power, particularly those high in gypsum, to mineral 'fines' produced by the aggregates and crushed stone industries. A number of these materials will be examined in relation to potential nutritional interactions in soils and crops with emphasis on trace elements. The significance of utilizing these materials in agriculture as a component of sustainable agricultural systems will be discussed.

Adverse water-quality impacts of uranium mining and milling activities on both surface- and ground-water resources in the Grants Mineral Belt have recently been documented.1 In some cases, the impacts resulted in violation of existing regulations and license conditions and have endangered public health. Unfortunately, industry-sponsored ground-water monitoring programs do not adequately record the actual impacts of mining and milling on ground-water quality.

This case study provides an example of how social marketing was applied to meet the needs of business customers. Federal regulations require that all companies develop a written program to track hazardous chemicals at their sites. The HazCom Writer, created by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is a software tool designed to help companies prepare their required Hazard Communications (HazCom) written plan and list all hazardous chemicals at the company's worksite. The social marketing goal was to provide a product for small- to medium-sized companies to use for federal HazCom rule compliance. The HazCom Wm'ter is a direct NIOSH response to customer and stakeholder needs (including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the mining community, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration- regulated companies).
