The principal equipment in the catalyst plants at Ludwigshafen-Oppau was inspected and is presented in the form of flow sheets for the manufacture of four of the principal catalysts. The equipment is in many cases of special design rather than stock items that was built by the company and modified in the coarse of the growth of the high-pressure synthesis of hydrocarbons in Germany. It is believed that if the manufacture of catalysts were to be undertaken elsewhere, the selection of equipment for the operations involved could be made successfully from the guidance furnished by this rather general report. Five additional catalysts are described, also. II. CATALYST 5058 FROM FRESH TUNGSTIC ACID In a supply tank of about 2,000 liters capacity, 500 kg. of tungstic acid (W03.H2O) that contains about 92-93 percent of W03 is dissolved at 60-70° C. in 1,500 liters of mother liquor. The solution is-effected by stirring for about 1-1/2 hours. The mother liquor is obtained from a previous, lot of catalyst and is first adjusted to a concentration of 13 percent 1H3 by passing in gaseous ammonia. The solution is allowed to stand without stirring for 1 hour, then is pumped into the saturating vessel through a cloth filter (three-quarters hr. to one hr.). The saturator is purged with H2S and thereafter the solution, which has been cooled to about 75° C., is heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen sulfide with stirring to about 70° C. This charge is slowly cooled to 50°, and then more rapidly to about 20° C. (time of cooling 6-7 hours).

The recovery of heavy minerals by gravity concentration during grinding is practised widely in the minerals industry. Studies have shown that the grade and recovery of the concentrate depends not only on the performance of the concentrator but also on the degree of liberation achieved in the mills and the scavenging action of the hydrocyclones closing the grinding circuit. In the current study, consideration is given to the development of mathematical models to quantify and unify the operations of comminution, liberation, classification and concentration. The models are based on test work done at production scale with gold ore.

"Aqueous biphasic extraction (ABE) processes offer the potential for low-cost, highly selective separations. This countercurrent extraction technique involves selective partitioning of either dissolved solutes or ultrafine particulates between two immiscible aqueous phases. The extraction systems that we have studied are generated by combining an aqueous salt solution with an aqueous polymer solution.We have examined a wide range of applications for ABE, including the treatment of solid and liquid nuclear wastes, decontamination of soils, and processing of mineral ores. We have also conducted fundamental studies of solution microstructure using small angle neutron scattering (SANS). In this chapter we review the physicochemical fundamentals of aqueous biphase formation and discuss the development and scaleup of ABE processes for environmental remediation.IntroductionAqueous biphasic extraction (ABE) is a highly adaptable separation technique that can be used in a wide range of applications. We have been evaluating various types of ABE systems for possible applications in the treatment of solid radioactive wastes (1,2), liquid nuclear wastes (3,4), and contaminated soils (5-7), and in the removal of organics from aqueous salt solutions (8). We have also conducted fundamental studies of the solution microstructure of ABE systems using small angle neutron scattering (SANS) (9).The extraction systems are generated by combining an aqueous salt solution and an aqueous polymer solution. This produces two distinct liquid layers that are as immiscible as oil and water, yet each liquid layer contains at least 70 to 80 wt % water. Some inorganic salts that promote biphase formation with PEG solutions include the sodium/potassium salts of sulfate, carbonate, phosphate, and hydroxide (10)."

Consumption of Diesel fuel oil in the United States has increased very rapidly during recent years. At the present time approximately 5 percent of the crude oil refined in this country is said to be processed for this purpose. This figure represents approximately 20 percent of the total distillate-type fuel oils now being produced in the United States. One factor contributing greatly to the recent increase in consumption of Diesel fuel oil has been the conversion from steam locomotives to Diesel engines by a number of railroads. Other contributing factors are greFl.ter use of Diesel engine8 in buses, trucks, tractors, water craft, and stationary power plants. The growing importance of Diesel fuel oil has resulted in a need by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers for more information regarding the types and quality of Diesel fuels currently being marketed. To supply this information, the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United states Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, have conducted a survey of Diesel fuel all produced in refineries in this country during 1950. Under the agreements, samples of Diesel fuel oil, representative of actual shipments, were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions issued by the Fuel Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines, and that agency has studied the data and compiled them by groups in comparable form as shown in the tables of this report.

"The more than 75 research projects funded throughout the first 10 years of the Dust Center's operation have resulted in numerous cumulative findings fulfilling the goals of the Center. These project descriptions present the methodologies and project-to-project relationships leading to their various accomplishments and demonstrate the mesh between project objectives and Center goals.To develop equipment for collecting respirable dust samples.To develop experimental methods for particle-by-particle characterization of morphology, size, and chemistry.To develop experimental methods for overall respirable dust sample characterization of size distribution, chemistry, and crystallography.The project directly addresses the Center's goals to enhance the understanding of the scientific and engineering characteristics of fine and respirable mineral particles found in mining and milling atmospheres and to establish the relationship between natural and cultural factors (mine geology, mineralogy, mining and milling methods, equipment, and control measures) in the generation of fine particles. The project also aims to contribute to the development of control mechanisms for reducing ambient respirable dust concentrations and worker exposures.The work on this project is related to similar work on Coal Mine Dust Characterization (Project No. 2701/MN1) and Characterization of Dust Particles (Project No. 4203/PS3).Airborne dust sampling was performed at the following locations: 1) a sand and gravel quarry in Southern New Hampshire, 2) a welding facility, 3) a ceramic powder facility, 4) a metal powder facility, and 5) the air in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A portable sampling box incorporating two Sierra personal cascade impactors was designed and produced. At a 2-LPM flow rate, the effective cut-off diameters of the Sierra impactors were 10.0, 6.0, 3.5, 2.0, 0.9, and 0.5 mm, respectively, for each stage, and the air passed through a PVC filter after the last stage. In addition, the sampling box contained a total respirable dust filter. The substrates were weighed carefully before and after collection, and the weight increases were recorded. All films, foils, and filters were put in the balance chamber for more than 8 hours to stabilize the temperature and humidity before weighing. A Cash 21 microbalance (±0.001 mg) was used to weigh the Mylar films, SS films, and filters."

After confronting many challenges during the 1990s and 2000s, SRL is embarking on a strategy of growth to recover maximum value from the mine over the rest of its life. Sophisticated linear programming techniques have been used to develop an optimum strategy for extracting SRLÆs many known deposits of economic grade, while considering options for expansion and for a variety of mining and processing methods and combinations. The Alpine-Himalayan system, the only major active tectonic belt mainly exposed in a continental mass, is of increasing interest to exploration geologists as well as to theoreticians. Answers to the broader problems of plate tectonics are being sought in this intricate system where the geosynclinal concept was born and where the geotectonic cycle was first applied to metallogeny. The search is all the more intense because it involves scientists from more than a dozen countries with a stimulating variety in perspective. The international Geodynamics Project has allocated the Alpine-Himalayan system to two separate study groups with one directing its attention to the Alpine-Mediterranean region and the other giving consideration to the Himalayan region. This geographic division is accepted in this paper, with remarks being confined to the former and to the west of boundary zone between the European-Asian and the Southeast Asian plates as envisioned by Dewey and Bird (1970). The region is well-mapped in some parts and it includes some of the most intensely-studied geology, most classic mines, and newest orebody discoveries. Within the region, an Alpine-age copper-molybdenum metallogenic belt extends from Rumania to Pakistan. The belt can be considered in terms of plate tectonics, and there is the possibility of using plate tectonics concepts in exploration.

The Jinping-I double curvature arch dam, located in the middle reach of the Yalong River and with a maximum height of 305 m, is the world highest dam of the same type that has been completed. Since the second and third periods of the reservoir impounding, after which the reservoir water level was raised by about 200 m, a significant amount of leakage was observed out of the drainage holes deployed in the lowest drainage tunnel at the left-bank abutment at EL. 1595 m, with a pressure of 0.3 MPa at one typical hole when it was blocked. In this study, a number of analyses including water quality analysis, digital borehole imaging, tunnel geological mapping and in-situ groundwater monitoring were performed to investigate the source of leaking, the leakage passages and the performance of the grouting curtains. An inverse modeling procedure combining the orthogonal design, finite element forward modeling of the transient seepage flow, artificial neural network and genetic algorithm was invoked to further evaluate the permeability of the foundation rocks whose permeability was underestimated in design, using the in-situ measurements of flow rate and piezometric head. The geological structures that lead to the leakage were identified and the seepage flow behaviors in the dam foundation and the left bank abutment were assessed. Given the connectivity nature of the sub-vertically oriented fractures that induce the leakage event, it is found that some of the drainage holes with relative larger amount of discharge could be closed or blocked for reducing the amount of leakage without remarkably increasing the pore water pressure in the foundation rocks.

With the gradual depletion of the natural-gas pools of the Kansas district, together with the uncertainty of further cheap fuel developments, some of the western zinc companies turned to the coal fields, attracted by their permanency and the success of the Matthiessen & Hegeler Co. and the lllinois Zinc Co. Being then confronted with the problem of using a relatively high-priced fuel, although the ultimate supply was very great, the fuel economies of the kilns and furnaces became of far more importance, and the more modern equipments, as a result, embodied distinct gaias in this phase of the business. In addition, there have been some pronounced advances in the actual making of gas from these coals. Increased efficiency in gas making has contributed its hare to lowering costs and those plants located in the higher priced fuel districts have probably been obliged to study these economies somewhat more closely. Naturally, many beneficial changes have resulted in both practice and apparatus in these sections. On certain western coals, for instance, the actual saving in fuel consumption has been 50 per cent. By this is meant that, where about 1.75 tons were burned to smelt 1 ton of oxidized ore, 0.7 to 0.9 ton is now required. While comparisons by T. R. Ingalls1 of fuel economies in smelting in this country and Germany before the war may, in general, be correct, they do not appear to do justice to the more progressive American practice. It is doubtful whether German plants were substantially bettering these fuel ratios. Data furnished by Bender and Frams do not afford records averaging less than 0.9 ton coal per ton ore on materials from 40 per cent. to 50 per cent. zinc. Fuels As producer fuel, Illinois, Indiana, and Kansas coah offer a wide range of material, although varying much in their amenability to gasscation. As part of its overall program of coal-carbonization research, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals from various fields of this country. Few of the coals included in this survey are used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke, although some well-known coking coals necessarily are tested to provide comparative data, particularly on blending properties. The overall objectives of the study were given in detail in a previous report.3/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes, as distinguished from economic considerations, depends primarily on (1) the available reserves, (2) chemical composition, (3) preparation characteristics, and (4) carbonization behavior. These items are considered in selecting coal for carbonization tests.

This paper describes a new mine backfill method based on a newly invented binder with several years of test results from laboratory and on- site applications. The new binder has several advantages over traditional Portland and slag cement binders. One tonne of the new binder can replace two to three tonne of Portland cement when used to consolidate backfill and can result in the same compressive strength within seven days. When comparing backfill slurries of the same pulp density, the new binder attains more volume of in-place backfill mass than Portland cement because of the high crystallisation of water, resulting in tightly filled stopes. The crystallisation of the water provides for less or no de- watering in the backfill stope and easier transportation of the backfill slurry. Pastefill performance can be achieved by using pulp densities typical of a hydraulic backfill and the new binder, all the while transporting with the same ease of hydraulic fill.

I. Introduction The experimental work described in this paper was carried out during 1967 and 1968 in an inclined reinforced concrete adit which had been driven during 1965 and 1966 to provide primary access for a new gypsum mine. The new mine was situated near the village of Sherburn-in-Elmet in central Yorkshire in an area of extensive post-glacial plains of deltaic and lacustrine origin. These plains cover a large area of this part of Yorkshire extending inland from the coast for a distance of about 35 miles. The gypsum deposit at Sherburn dates from Permian times and it is considered" to have been associated with the western-most edges of the ancient Zechstein Sea which was also responsible for the formation of the extensive evaporite deposits in north-east Yorkshire. The gypsum deposit, which varies in thickness from 10 to 15 feet, is extremely pure and it occurs quite close to the surface; in the Sherburn area the overburden is only 120 feet thick. The proximity of the deposit to the surface, however, tends to give a somewhat false idea of the magnitude of the problems associated with its extraction. These problems were all related to the nature of the overlying strata. As has already been mentioned, the surface deposits are post-glacial and they consist of an extremely large number of thin layers of varved clays, fine silts and sands extending down to a depth of 75 feet. From the bottom of the post-glacial deposits to the seam, a distance of about 45 feet, the strata consists of a succession of marls, weak sandstones, and siltstones, which although they are inherently incompetent materials, are appreciably stronger

"A continuous improvement initiative was identified at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine’s (KCGM) Fimiston open pit with the goal of reducing bench turnover time and increasing shovel digability by improving fragmentation around previously mined-out stopes. In the past, a higher number of blasts than normal would be required to get through a single excavation area where stopes were present. This is due to the limited reach capability of the drilling fleet from safe ground into restricted areas requiring the drilling of the shot to be done in a staged manner. In addition, the holes that were able to be drilled in the area did not remain open long enough to be loaded with explosives as a result of the poor ground conditions surrounding the stopes.Over the last 18 months, KCGM has trialled drill additives to improve blasthole stability, as well as introducing a remote drill rig allowing holes to be drilled in areas previously inaccessible by manned drill rigs. This has resulted in improved penetration rates in bad ground conditions, improved drill hole stability, better shovel digability, and an overall reduction in bench turnover of at least ten days on the benchmarked 126 days average per bench. KCGM is now in the final stages of the improvement project with the installation of a drill monitoring system on the fleet to allow live data transfer back to the office for analysis, as well as providing improved accuracy on drill holes in restricted areas.Citation:Michaud, C and Kavanagh, D, 2016. The selection of the main mineralised zone (MMZ) concentrator milling circuit has followed a comprehensive route over the preceding 10 years. Many knowledgeable parties have contributed and assisted in developing the milling circuit according to the best available information. The final selection of the flow sheet was completed after DRA conducted a techno-economic study on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous (AG) milling. The results from all the above mentioned work indicated that it is possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding circuit. The flow sheet was designed to treat the main mineralised zone (MMZ) arising?s from both underground and open cast operations and incorporates a fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuit. Commissioning of the 375ktpm concentrator at Nkomati Nickel began in August 2009 with the first ore reporting to the mill on the 15th of September 2009.

"The Line 5 Extension, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is currently the most important investment in public transportation by Sao Paulo’s state government. It will connect the south part of the city to the city center, crossing through four other major Metro lines and stations; all currently in operation. The total extension of the line is 11 km (6.8 mi), and includes a new parking yard for the trains and 11 new stations. The Brooklin Station, one of the new stations due to be open and operating in 2016, has a unique geometry of five secant shafts.The original design included constructing five secant shafts stabilized by two plastic slurry walls using conventional grab technology. One slurry wall, along the Santo Amaro Avenue, was to contain the contamination plumes, and another was for temporary support to enable the excavation of the shafts. The final retaining wall design was changed to a concrete structural diaphragm wall that reduced the construction time of the shafts by half, allowing the contractor to meet the construction schedule. This solution also avoided dewatering effects in a geological region characterized by Quaternary sediments and environmental contamination plumes. It was the first time that a hydromill was used in such a situation in Brazil. The hydromill, by overcutting the panels, increased the quality of the joints, and decreased the probability of having seepage into the shafts. The hydromill also created a seepage barrier and avoided movement of the contaminated plumes.The GeologyLocal geology is composed of a superficial Quaternary soil, basically soft organic clays and sands and gravels. From the depth of 8 m (26 ft) until 18 m (59 ft), geology is composed by tertiary medium compact sand with thin silt-clay layers. From 18 m (59 ft) down, there are alternations between compact silt-sands layers with very hard clays layers. Each is approximately 5 to 10 m (16.4 ft to 33 ft) thick.The Initial Basic DesignThe original basic design of the Brooklin Station was to be constructed from five 40 m (131 ft) diameter intersecting circular shafts, all in a line along the axis of the Metro tunnel, in 555 days. In the excavation sequence, the odd shafts were first excavated, waterproofed and had part of their inside cast-in-place structure built before the even shafts were excavated. During the excavation of the even shafts, part of the odd shaft’s support was demolished and connected with the even support. A 0.8 m (2.6 ft) thick plastic slurry wall, acting together with the wire mesh reinforced shotcrete support, ensured the excavation stability around the five shafts."

Longwall mine instrumentation for measuring abutment stress distribution, mining induced immediate roof stress change and deformation, and primary/secondary support loads and deformations provides critical guidance for the design of gateroad chain pillars and roof support. Field measurement results are also recognized as the best way to calibrate numerical models that have been used to study the failure and support mechanisms. International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) started in 1981 and since then, there were 26 papers published in the proceedings discussing the stress and load measurements as the face advanced using various field instrumentation techniques. The focus of this paper is on summarizing the analyses of the data published in these papers. Stress/load change monitoring included the following categories: gateroad chain pillar, abutment pressure, bolt load, and pre-driven recovery room. The data shows that the magnitude of stress changes as the face advances varies considerably from panel to panel and mine to mine. However, regardless of types of stress changes, pillar stress, abutment pressure, and bolt load, there exists a rough trend of stress increase as the face advances, generally consisting of three stages, i.e., stress/load (1) initially increases steady or slowly, (2) increases rapidly, and (3) increases reaching the peaks and dropping down slowly or sharply. The stress/load increases start earlier during the second panel mining and are larger than the first panel mining. This review makes it easy for the interested persons to find valuable data for other similar projects.

ONE per cent. of ash in a ton of coal has been so little considered that in many circles it has been positively ignored. Even P. T. Barnum had never heard of it, or he would have had one on exhibition alongside the Cardiff Giant and the White Elephant. One per cent. of ash is closely related by both those freaks of Barnum in that it is "stone" and, in its aggregate, it is the greatest "White Elephant" that the American public now supports. Some of you may have paid Mr. Barnum for a look at the "petrified man" (named the Cardiff Giant by the gullible wise men of the early seventies); but it is certain that everyone of you is now paying for the support of the great White Elephant that is being constantly carried by our railroads all over the country-at the public's expense. " One per cent. of ash in a ton of coal" requires 120,000 open-top railroad cars each year to transport this use- less stone giant from its native bed in the coal seams of the bituminous regions to the coal bins of the consuming public.

Abstract A division of part of the Canadian Shield into provinces believed to represent former mountain belts is attempted, special emphasis- being laid upon radioactive age determinations, the relation of Archaean to Proterozoic rocks, and the structure of the Grenville province. Original data on the distribution of radioactivity within several batholiths and their connection with ore deposits are' presented. The possible growth of continents and a theory which explains the shape and distribution of the world's younger mountain and island areas are discussed and applied to the Canadian Shield in an attempt to explain how the growth and present structure came about. The relation of the major mining camps of northeastern Ontario to fault zones is discussed in the light of this theory. Introduction The valuable symposium issued by this Institute to celebrate its jubilees emphasizes the important role of major faults in determining the location of many ore deposits in the Canadian Shield. Many of these faults are known to extend for long distances. It is therefore widely appreciated that it would be of great value if the pattern, ages, and causes of these faults were better understood. This would be particularly useful if the relations of the major fault systems to petrological and metallogenic provinces and to former mountain belts could be established. Each year the volume of available data, and hence the chance of reaching a fuller solution of this problem, increases. This article is a review of the present situation. It is accordingly based almost wholly upon the work and ideas of others, which are gratefully acknowledged. Naturally, responsibility for the selection and marshalling of the data is the writer's.

EDUCATIONAL trends as reflected in curricular changes are of interest and importance in engineering educa¬tion both as matters of record and as considerations for the future. The data on which the evidence of this report is based were obtained by sending questionnaires to all schools in the United States granting the undergraduate degree in mining engineering, metallurgy, or metallurgical engineering. The questionnaire had two parts, one inquiring as to the general nature of revisions made or planned, and the other asking for information on specific courses added to or dropped from the curriculum, or given more or less time than formerly. The frequency with which curricular changes are made, even in normal times, is notable. Although it was expected that the period since 1939-40 would show numerous revisions, it was somewhat surprising to find that of 62 mining or metallurgical curricula in existence in 1939-40 and reported in the present survey, 58 had been revised or are shortly to be revised, 52 having already been changed during this period. Moreover, approximately half of the mining schools that have already revised their curricula, and probably a similar proportion of the metallurgical schools, are about to make further important changes.

"The asbestos orebody is contained within ultrabasic rocks of Precambrian age, being located in the continuous permafrost zone of the Quebec Ungava Peninsula, some 300 miles north of the tree line at approximate latitude 61'49' and longitude 73°58'.The asbestos deposit is at the western tip of a folded ultrabasic sill complex which trends northeast and covers an elliptical area 4.5 miles wide by 15 miles long. Locally. the asbestos occurs in. a completely serpentinized dunite rock. The principal rock types in the vicinity of the ore-body originally consisted of dunite, peridotite and pyroxenite, all of which have experienced at least two periods of alteration, so that no fresh rock now remains.The main ore zone in the open pit is approximately one quarter mile in length, 150 to 200 feet in width, and plunges at 25 to 30 degrees in a northeast direction below surface, to a vertical depth of at least 1,200 feet, Consider¬able tectonic activity resulted in favourable structural conditions which culminated in the formation of the ore zone in its present form.The deposit consists principally of cross-fibre ""gash type"" veins which vary in length from several inches to several feet. The principal fibre vein direction is parallel to the dip of the enclosing serpentinized dunite and sill complex.Some of the problems encountered during diamond drill¬ing in permafrost are briefly discussed."
