Nuclear detonation data were accumulated, studied, and evaluated by the Bureau of Mines to visualize how nuclear explosives might be used in a shale?-oil industry, The evaluation shows that the Green River Formation at the semi-isolated locale of Piceance Creek Basin, in northwestern Colorado; is thick and widespread enough to warrant consideration of nuclear mining in lieu of conventional methods, Because cost data for nuclear explosions are limited; cost comparisons are made largely by assumptions. Also described are the history of the shale-oil industry, the geology and size of oil-shale resources; and conventional mining methods and processing technology.

The Resource Management Act has been in force now for approximately ten months. This Act, and the Crown Minerals Act which accompanied it, have substantially changed the manner by which mining operations and other resource uses obtain access to resources and are subject to controls of their environmental effects. This paper briefly summarises the key elements of the regulatory provisions of the Resource Management Act. It identifies the types of resource consents required, and discusses these and procedural matters in relation to mining in Otago. It addresses the transitional provisions and highlights inconsistencies and difficulties in the implementation of these provisions. This paper identifies potential future developments in the planning and regulatory environment relating to mining in Otago.

THE iron-silicon alloy series has always been one of the most puzzling among the binary alloys. Examining the well known mechanical properties of the iron-rich alloys only we meet the following situation: The ultimate strength and yield point of alloys worked and annealed under the usual conditions represent nearly a straight line function of the silicon content up to 4.5 per cent. silicon (Fig. 1). Starting at the ultimate strength of 35,000 lb. and at a yield-point of 16,000 lb. for pure electrolytic iron, one reaches a -maximum strength of 93,000 lb. and a maximum yield point of 74,000 lb. at 4.5 per cent. silicon. This corresponds to an increase in ultimate strength by 13,000 lb. per each per cent. of silicon added and nearly the same rate applies to the yield point. The data mentioned are taken from the investigation by T. D. Yensen,1 and while they do not exactly corroborate the results obtained by earlier investigators, they seem to be the most correct. Plastic properties of the alloys are controlled by a much more complicated relationship. Up to 2.5 per cent. Si, the elongation stays close to 50 per cent. (in 2 in.) and the area reduction amounts to 85 per cent., a situation that forms the usual feature of all alloys representing strictly solid solutions. The plasticity of the latter is always nearly equal to that of their base metal. Beyond 2.5 per cent. silicon, the situation becomes much more complicated Yensen observed an enormous drop in elongation and area reduction at about 2.65 per. cent. silicon, where the first hardly reaches 10 per cent. and the second is still lower; he found, however, a considerable recovery in plasticity at about 2.8 per cent. Si and up to. 4.5 per cent. Si it is represented by 20 per cent. for the elongation and 30 per cent. for area reduction.

Traditionally the Pacific Northwest has relied on hydroelectric power, which has been both abundant and cheap. However, comparatively few hydroelectric sites capable of providing low-cost power remain, therefore the need for supplemental thermal generation, perhaps within the next decade, is generally recognized. Based on the present cost and availability of competing fuels, coal seems to be the logical choice for projected thermal power plants. Power companies and public utilities have become interested in establishing reserves of coal for future use. One deposit explored in 1958-59 lies in southern Thurston and northern Lewis Counties, Wash., near Centralia. Drilling, totaling 22,700 feet, proved the existence of 70 million tons of strippable coal--an ample reserve for the projected power plant. The coal, like most others and particularly those of Washington and Oregon, when mined in full seam section by mechanical methods, would require cleaning to make it suitable for use. The amount and nature of the impurities in this coal dictated a thorough investigation of its cleaning characteristics to establish economic factors and to insure proper preparation-plant design. Therefore, arrangements were made through a cooperative agreement to conduct such work at the Seattle Coal Research Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. This report describes that investigation. The results are of interest primarily in connection with the utilization of this particular deposit, but some of the information developed is applicable to other deposits of low-rank coals in the West, because the impurities in these coals differ greatly in behavior from those generally associated with the higher rank coals of the Appalachian field.

The Brazilian Regulation NBR 9653 is a guide intended to evaluate mine and quarry blasting effects in urban areas. The first version, written in 1986 by the Committee of the Brazilian Associate of Technical Norms, is currently being revised. Current regulations specify a maximum PPV limit of 15 mm/s (0.59 in/s) without consideration of frequency or type of structures being protected. The present regulation is still a draft and it is not validated. Several different agencies and institutions have participated in the Committee such as the Environmental Agency from the State of São Paulo (CETESB), University of São Paulo (POLI-USP), University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), National Department of Mineral Resources (DNPM), Aggregate Industry (ANEPAC and SINDIPEDRAS), besides a number of industry representatives, explosives manufactures and independent consultants. The present regulation proposes to modify the limits of particle velocity and introduces new definitions and criteria for evaluation of vibrations, as well recommendations to address blast vibration complaints.

The range of composition of gases synthesized from solid fuels which are exchangeable with natural gas on current gas appliances was evaluated by theoretical principles. These principles consider primarily the flashback, blowoff, and yellow-tipping characteristics of air-entraining burner flames. It was found that complete identity between the synthetic and natural product is not necessary. Gases such as may be obtained by hydrogasification of coal and other solid fuels without the removal of unreacted hydrogen offer advantages in flame characteristics. Between 25 to 37 percent hydrogen can be tolerated in the sendout gas.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunneling is an ever-increasing prospect for underground construction, and, with each new tunnel bored, there are unknown elements. When boring through the earth, even extensive geotechnical baseline reports can miss fault lines, water inflows, squeezing ground, rock bursting and other types of extreme conditions. This article draws on the consider-able field service experience within Robbins to analyze successful methods of dealing with the most challenging conditions encountered. Many tunnel projects are located in areas with relatively poor access along the tunnel alignment and bored under extremely high overburden. These two factors often result in limited geological information. It would be reason-able to state that the deeper the tunnel, the greater the lev-el of uncertainties. When faced with these uncertainties everyone involved with the project including the owner, the contractor and the machine supplier must be prepared to tackle geological surprises. This article describes the problematic geological conditions and associated difficulties faced on three separate projects and the measures that were taken to overcome these difficulties.

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2015 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) (Charlottesville, VA) database and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry, and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry.Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2015 as compiled by the USGS; and regional events that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2015 for 24 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys and are based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals, (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash), and other commodities (diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rareearth elements (REE), tantalum, tungsten and uranium).USGS data compilations and analyses are based on information provided by USGS mineral commodity and country specialists, as well as industry contacts and published trade journals. The USGS data summarize exploration site data collected for more than 80 minerals and materials, with a focus on base metals, diamond and precious metals. The USGS analyzed available information to assess the level of exploration activity in 2015 and to report trends in mineral exploration activity for the period 2005 through 2015. These analyses identify where mineral exploration is occurring by commodity and region and the intensity of activity that is taking place in each region for selected mineral commodities, and determines those factors that most affect changes in exploration activity."

Ultrafine copper, gold and silver minerals flotation has become increasingly important because of the rising demand for processing finely disseminated ores. This paper investigates the improved flotation of ultrafine ores from a Troilus Gold project. Troilus is primarily an Au-Cu deposit but contains minor amounts of Ag, Zn and Pb, as well as traces of Bi, Te, and Mo. As a result of ultrafine Cu-Au-Ag dissemination and associated grinding requirements, Eriez’ column/StackCell and Denver benchtop cells were utilized to optimize their respective flotation responses. Enhanced flotation results were achieved using column and StackCell technologies. KAX 51 and SPRI 206 collectors, Na2SO3, and ZnSO4 depressants were the primary reagents employed. In column/StackCell flotation of three main mineral deposit ore composites, the rougher-scavenger-cleaner circuit Cu, Au and Ag flotation recoveries were 90.4~95.8% at a copper grade of 13.6-17.4%, 87.5-95.1% at a gold grade of 101-145.9 g/t, and 88.6-91.8% at a silver grade of 62.6-251.4 g/t, respectively. The benefits of Eriez Column/StackCell flotation technologies include high flotation selectivity and increased recovery due to unique hydrodynamic designs. Specifically, the StackCell design facilitates high turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates to improve fine particle recovery and incorporates countercurrent wash water to significantly reduce hydraulic entrainment of the finest size gangue minerals to the froth product.

The demand for high-grade iron ore has increased the importance of beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. The captive mines of Tata Steel Limited, India has reserves of Banded Haematite Jasper (BHJ) ore assayed 40% Fe, 40% SiO2 and <1% Al2O3. QEMSCAN study has revealed haematite and quartz as a major iron bearing and gangue mineral phases respectively. Liberation characteristics have showed 80% liberation can be obtained at particle size below 10µm. In the present study, reverse cationic froth flotation of BHJ using ether diamines is explored in Denver-D12 flotation cell. Polynomial response surface regression equation coupled with six-factor Box-Behnken design of experiments is used to generate the correlation between process separation efficiency and flotation parameters. Flotation studies of BHJ indicated that concentrate of 62% Fe can be achieved with 62% Fe recovery from Jig concentrate at optimum conditions. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effectiveness of long holes drilled in solid virgin coal in degasifying an area of the Pittsburgh coalbed showing that horizontal holes drilled into a virgin coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove methane gas in commercial quantities from the Pittsburgh coalbed. The in situ pressure at a depth of 214 feet into the coalbed and the average gas and water flows from the five degasification holes were 3 lb/in2 gage and 860,000 ft3/d and 1.7 gal/min, respectively. On June 19, 1975, after 593 days of degasification, a compressor was installed and pipeline quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipeline. As of June 1, 1976, after 1,022 days of degasification, over 753 million cubic feet of gas had been drained and 117 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company for use in the local community of Wadestown, W. Va. The gas drained to date is six times the gas estimated to be in the area subtended by the holes. Methane emissions at the working face of 1 West mains, Federal No.2 mine has been reduced by 50 pct, proving the value of methane drainage by horizontal degasification holes drilled from shaft bottoms ahead of mining.

En ese sentido, a medida que la interconexión de la economia mundial avanza, es más difícil que países en desarrollo aprovechen las fuerzas lucrativas de la demanda global para lograr una sostenibilidad social y ambiental. En consecuencia, los países en desarrollo contienen un peso ambiental desigual en relación con los países desarrollados qie importan materias primas. Como ejemplo de ello, el precio del oro aumentó, así como la minería aurífera informal y no industrial en los países en los países en desarrollo y el mal manejo del mercurio en el uso del oro, repercutió en el medio ambiente y los mismos mineros, al igual que el problema de la deforestación. Por ello, se plantea un programa para enfrentar dchos problemas en la región de Madre de Dios y reducir el aumento de la minería informal.

Bulk density tests were made on a Western U.S. coke oven plant blend to obtain bulk density control data that would be directly transferable to plant practice . Maximum bulk density values were obtained at zero surface moisture . Increase in surface moisture to about 6 percent decreased the bulk density to a minimum value . Increase in the fine grinding of the blend , at constant surface moisture , decreased the bulk density . The effect of oil on bulk density was observed with five oils at concentrations ranging from 1/8 to 1-1 / 2 gallons per ton . Maximum bulk densities were obtained within the 1 / 2- to 1 - gallon - per - ton range . Essentially the same bulk densities were obtained with petrolatum- and nonpetrolatum- containing oils . Storage effects were observed on samples tested at selected intervals from 0 to 56 days . No significant change in bulk density took place if no surface moisture was lost during storage .

Abandoned coal mines have many underground space resources, such as roadways, shafts, and gobs. Among them, abandoned roadways are the best gas storage space for underground compressed air energy storage (CAES). However, CAES caverns have high air pressure and strict sealing requirements. Therefore, the stability and sealing of abandoned roadways under high internal pressure must be analyzed. Afterward, the suitability of abandoned roadways used for CAES caverns should be evaluated. In this study, the numerical simulation software FLAC3D was used to calculate the stress, deformation, plastic zone volume, and pore pressure of surrounding rock in an abandoned roadway under 10 MPa internal pressure. The influence of buried depth, surrounding rock grade, and in situ stress state on roadway stability and the effect of surrounding rock permeability on roadway sealing were analyzed. Results showed that the stress, displacement, and plastic zone volume of surrounding rock were affected by high internal pressure when the buried depth was less than 300 m, but high internal pressure had little effect on them when the buried depth was more than 300 m. The suitable range of buried depth was more than 300 m. The optimal choice of surrounding rock grade was I and II, followed by grades III, IV, and V. The optimal choice of in situ stress state was σH > σh > σv, followed by σH > σv > σh and σv > σH > σh. The sensitivity of the stability evaluation parameters was ranked in descending order as follows: buried depth, surrounding rock grade, and in situ stress state. When the surrounding rock permeability was less than 1 × 10− 14m2, the 24-h air leakage rate of the roadway was less than 1%. The suitable range of surrounding rock permeability was less than 1 × 10− 14m2.

Dense medium separation (DMS) is one of several preconcentration methods used for early waste rejection from run of mine ores at relatively coarse particle sizes prior to additional milling and beneficiation. DMS has been used extensively in the coal, diamond and iron ore industries but lab scale and pilot test work has demonstrated successful separation and upgrading of other minerals such as lead, zinc, copper and lithium based ores using DMS. This paper reviews historical dense media systems, results from the pilot scale Condor DMS system as well as associated laboratory heavy liquid separation (HLS) test work.

IN THE preliminary design of a coal washery, the most important factor to evaluate is the ash content of the final product. The ash content permissible may be imposed by market demands, but, in the final analysis, sooner or later - as most consumers today are buying coal on a &apos;heat value&apos; basis - the coal operator has a certain margin of latitude. and the ash content of the coal to be delivered can be determined on the basis of maximum returns and highest profits. A few years ago, the most desirable separation was selected on the basis of the plus-minus 0.10; that is, the most desirable gravity of the separation was selected at the point showing a minimum amount of near gravities in the raw coal. The reason for this was an expected wide error over these near gravities. Today with the recent development of cry accurate, automatically controlled cleaning apparatus, a much larger latitude is possible, and the most desirable gravity of separation can be selected, almost exclusively, on the basis of the economic factors involved. To illustrate these new methods of investigation we shall give two examples, based on actual coals from the western United States.

THE little town of San Nicolás, Tamaulipas, Mexico, lies approximately 60 miles east of Linares, situated in the State of Nuevo Leon, and 150 miles SE. of Monterey, as shown in the sketch-map. Fig. 1. The place is reached from Monterey by the Tampico train as far as Linares, a distance of 92 miles, and then by coach the rest of the way. It is situated in a narrow valley between low hills, the houses forming one main street and a plaza. It is peopled by about 500 inhabitants. The climate is temperate, the thermometer ranging from 90° in summer to a few degrees below freezing-point in winter; but this severe weather only lasts a day or two at a time, when the " northers " blow. There are no streams in the vicinity, but water sufficient for the use of the people is obtained from wells. The rainfall is about the same as that in the rest of NE. Mexico. The rainy months are July, August, and September. The rest of the year is practically dry, with an occasional showery day or two during the winter, when a " norther " is blowing. Timber is abundant in many localities. There are two varieties of oak, besides mesquite, ebony, "maguira," "patol," and a number of other kinds of trees indigenous to this region. I. HISTORY. On the discovery of the silver-lead hearing veins occurring in this district, the mining-camp of San Nicolás was founded in 1767 by the Spaniards, and numerous mines were opened and worked for a distance of abort 3 miles east and 5 miles west of the town. "INTRODUCTION The major objective of our research is to help reduce the incidence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP). To that end, this project is designed to improve our understanding of the processes that lead to pulmonary dysfunction following mine dust exposure, and how those processes might be interrupted or attenuated. The response of the lung ' to inhaled particles is complex, and the course of development of disabling CWP is slow and unpredictable. From among the numerous cellular and molecular interactions involved in the pulmonary response to inhaled particles, this project is focussed on the role that the pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM) may play in regulating the activity of fibroblasts.The PAM is the lung cell that has the most immediate and the most obvious interaction with inhaled particles. Within a short period after particles are arrested in the alveolus of the lung, they are phagocytized (engulfed) by these specialized cells. The PAM then has a diverse potential repertoire of subsequent activities. Which reaction actually ensues is determined, in large part, by the nature of the phagocytized _particles. Activated PAMs produce a variety of products that may affect adjacent lung tissue, including superoxide free radical, elastase, collagenase, prostaglandins, platelet activating factor, etc. Those may well be important in the pathogenesis of CWP, but they are beyond the scope of this project. Background information that is cogent to this project has come primarily from investigations using animal models of silicosis and asbestosis. PAMs that have ingested silica particles synthesize and release molecules that control the behavior of surrounding cells. One such mediator is interleukin-1 (IL-1), a molecule that plays a central role in many aspects of the response to injury. It can stimulate fibroblasts (the cells that help to hold tissues together) to release the enzyme collagenase, resulting in breakdown of the structural collagen fibers that support the lung tissue. IL-1 also stimulates fibroblasts to undergo mitosis and to proliferate, which is an initial stage of fibrosis. Certain stimulants cause PAMs to release fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) that are distinct- from IL-1. Under other circumstances activated PAMs synthesize and release molecules that stimulate fibroblasts to accelerate synthesis of collagen fibers, thus contributing to fibrosis. Although these observations provide a valuable precedent for analysis of the mechanisms involved in CWP, their relevance to CWP cannot be assumed since most of those studies involved macrophages or fibroblasts obtained from tissues other than the lung, and because almost none of them have used CMD as the stimulating particles. Therefore, the goal of this project is to learn how exposure to CMD affects the behavior of PAMs, and in turn how products of dust-exposed PAMs affect fibroblasts and the process of fibrosis in the lung."

"The Lake St. Joseph Iron Deposit is in Northwestern Ontario. Exploration to date by Steep Rock Iron Mines Limited has indicated an ore reserve of 683 million long tons. Metallurgical investigations have proved that suitable oxide pellets and/or superconcentrates can be economically produced from this ore. Studies of the Lake St. Joseph iron ore deposits have covered the period 1956-71, and have embodied applications of the improvement in mining and processing technology over this period. Market demand in the early 1960's for high-grade oxide pellets as a replacement for natural iron ores for the blast furnace first drew attention to the potential of the Lake St. Joseph deposit. The current market trend toward utilization of sponge iron to replace steel scrap as feed to electric furnaces and cupolas now suggests that the deposit can better be exploited as a prime source of superconcentrates."

The Federal Bureau of Mines has conducted laboratory experiments simulating underground gasification of coal to study the feasibility and mechanism of the process and determine the chemical and physical characteristics of a coal-bed during gasification. Laboratory and small-scale field experiments also were made to investigate the properties of coal and other factors affecting the electrolinking-carbonization method of preparing a path through a coalbed before gasification. Laboratory experiments simulating underground gasification of coal: Experiments with a laboratory retort indicated that bituminous-coal deposits could be gasified in place to produce a combustible gas.
