"INTRODUCTION AND RESUME Arizona asbestos mines are the only sources on the American continents of iron-free chrysotile spinning fiber that meets the Navy specifications for asbestos fiber for use in covering electrical cables. Rhodesia normally supplies the bulk of this grade of asbestos at about half the Price of Ari zona spinning fiber. The acute submarine menace in 1942 focused attention on the danger that imports might be cut off and that a sudden demand for greatly expanded production might fall on the Arizona mines to supply the tonnage of this essential material needed for war production.A joint preliminary investigation of Arizona asbestos deposits was made in August 1941 by J. R. Thoenen, senior mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines and A. E. Granger, a geologist of the United States Geological Survey. A more extended investigation of the numerous asbestos mines and prospects, which are scattered over 25 townships of difficult terrain in Gila County, was begun by the senior author in August 1942.The Geological Survey assigned two geologists (Newton Chute and A. F. Shride) a few weeks later to study the geology as an aid in selecting the mines for the Bureau's exploration projects. Six mines were selected for exploratory work because it was desired to prove reserves of ore where production could be started quickly if urgent demand should arise. Acceleration of production is normally slow because of adverse operating conditions. First, the mines are at distances of 35 to 100 miles from Globe, the shipping and supply point, and the roads are few and poor. The mine openings start in steep canyon walls, so that mining supplies usually have to be packed in and the product packed out over 0.5 to 5 miles of burro trail. Second, most of the ore deposits are small, and the ratio of rock broken to spinning fiber recovered is very high, usually exceeding 200."

To initiate this project a critical evaluation of the pre-sent phosphate mining industry in the Western phosphate field was conducted. Mines were visited, mine operators were interviewed and pertinent literature studied. Three phosphate mining enterprises were reviewed and mining cost estimates prepared. The report discusses the present state of phosphate processing, rock alteration and location. New ideas and concepts are proposed to improve the recovery of phosphate rock from the Phosphoria formation. The report evaluates two variations to the present phosphate open pit mining methods, which were developed to improve the economics of mining phosphate and to better accomplish necessary reclamation and accelerate the time for environmental recovery. A material handling system using conveyor haulage will eliminate the need for trucks. Terrace haulback utilizes safety benches to haul and dispose of waste in the mined out pit. Ore will be removed from the pit via an inclined, cable-supported mobile conveyor.

The approximate effective silicon radii in ternary Laves phase alloys with transition elements and silicon were found to range between 1.16 and 1.21A, i.e., considerably smaller than the atomic radius calculated for elemental silicon. The atomic radii were found to increase with the size of the transition element atoms in the structure. It has been noted by Aronsson1 that silicon in solid solution in iron, cobalt, and nickel has an effective CN 12 atomic radius of approximately 1.20Å, a value very much smaller than the CN 12 radius of 1.34Å derived from the interatomic distances in elemental silicon.7 The unusually short metal-silicon interatomic distances in transition element monosilicides and disilicides have been also pointed out by various investigators.1 A similar tendency was observed by Nevitt in Cr3O type silicides.2 Recent work on Laves phases in ternary systems of silicon with transition elements4"8 suggested that extensive Laves phase fields may occur in such systems.8 It has been pointed out by Laves7 that the MgCu2 and MgZn2 type structures lend themselves particularly well for the determination of the effective radii of the component atoms. In these AB2 phases the B atoms are arranged in close packed straight lines, and their distances are related in a simple manner to the lattice parameters.8 The present work was undertaken in order to find out whether or not the B transition element in such AB2 Laves phases can be replaced to an appreciable extent by silicon. In cases where extensive substitution proves to be possible, the "average atomic radius for the B site" at various silicon contents was to be determined, and the effective atomic radius of silicon calculated by extrapolation to complete replacement of the B component by silicon. The following ternary systems were studied: Ti-Mn-Si, Ti-Fe-Si, V-Co-Si, V-Ni-Si, Nb-Fe-Si, Nb-Co-Si, Ta-Fe-Si, Ta-Co-Si, and Mo-Fe-Si. In all of these alloy systems, the Laves phase solid solutions were found to extend over a considerable range of silicon content. As previously reported,4"8 in the V-Co-Si, V-Ni-Si, and Mo-Fe-Si ternary systems Laves phases do occur, even though there are no corresponding binary Laves phases. In stabilizing the Laves phase, silicon acts as if it were decreasing the effective electron concentration of the alloy.8 A more detailed study of the boundaries of the Laves phases in the V-Co-Si and V-Ni-Si systems has been made and will be published elsewhere. In both cases, the elongated Laves phase fields extend parallel to the B-Si side of the composition triangle, clearly showing that silicon is substituting for cobalt, respectively, nickel over a wide range of compositions. The binary Laves phases NbCo2 and TaCo2 have the cubic MgCu2-type structure. It was found that, in both ternary systems with silicon, again the MgZn2-type hexagonal Laves phase is stabilized and that this phase extends to high-silicon contents. In each ternary system at least three Laves phase alloys of the composition A(B1_xSix)2 were used, x here denoting the fractional substitution of the B-transition element atoms by silicon. The alloys, listed in Table I, were prepared by arc melting in argon. Each specimen was water quenched after a homogenizing anneal of 3 days at 110(FC, except for the Mo-Fe-Si alloys, which were annealed at 1200°C. Metallographic examination showed that most of the homogenized alloys consisted of a single phase, although some had minor amounts of a second phase, as shown in Table I. X-ray diffraction patterns were prepared using an asymmetrical focusing camera of large resolution and Fe Ka radiation. "Any burning carbonaceous material, unless supplied with enough oxygen for complete combustion, will liberate carbon monoxide. Since tobacco in its many different forms consists largely of carbonaceous material, and duo to the conditions under which it is smoked (burned), carbon monoxide should be liberated. That this is true has been shown by Armstrong.***** who found that undiluted smoke from cigars contained in some tests more than 3.00 per cent carbon monoxide, the amount present depending upon the size and closeness of packing of the tobacco during manufacture and on the rate of burning.****** Cigarets gave much less CO, varying from 0.06 to 1.40 per cent. The rate of consumption and carbon content of the tobacco are not g.ven, so that a correlation of the values reported to conditions in closed spaces where people might be assembled are difficult, if not impossible.The Bureau of Mines is interested in the general question of carbon-monoxide hazards from tobacco smoke, mainly with regard to mine ventilation. In non-gaseous mines, especially metal mines, the question arises, whether, if groups of miners are permitted to smoke while working at unventilated faces or entries, would the accumulation of tobacco smoke in these places create an' additional hazards the to carbon-monoxide poisoning. The results should, in addition be of general interest in connection with ventilation of building and inclosed places where people may be assembled and smoking is permitted. Separation of dolomite from phosphate is the most challenging problem in phosphate mineral processing. Over 50% of the future phosphate reserves in Florida contains too much dolomite to process using the current industry practice. The FIPR Institute has collaborated with worldwide experts in the field to address this issue. As a result, the industry is now offered with three feasible options. Optional 1 involves crushing and grinding of high-dolomite phosphate pebbles followed by dolomite flotation at slightly acidic pH using a new collector that does not require phosphoric acid as a phosphate depressant, achieving a final concentrate analyzing less than 0.9% MgO at about 87% P2O5 recovery. Option 2 offers three methods for reducing MgO content in the concentrate from the Crago process, including adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step, dolomite flotation of the cleaner concentrate, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand. These methods could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20-40%. Option 3 is a gravity separation technique using an innovative separation jig, and may well be the ultimate solution to the problem. INTRODUCTION Magnitude of the Dolomite Problem With the depletion of the higher grade, easy-to-process Bone Valley deposits, the central Florida phosphate industry has moved into the lower grade, more contaminated ore bodies from the Southern Extension. The phosphate deposits in the Southern Extension may be divided into two zones: an upper zone and a lower zone. The upper zone is readily processable using the current technology, but the lower zone is highly contaminated by dolomite. Geological and mineralogical statistics (Hassan and Bogan, 1994) show (Table 1) that more than 50% of the phosphate resource would be wasted if the lower zone is bypassed in mining, and about 13% of the resource would be wasted if the dolomitic pebbles in the lower zone were discarded.

Industries in general and the mining industry in particular have become more safe than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction through job design, work procedures, and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control has to be practiced in a manner which is consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, among which are the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to (i) review the role risk analysis in safety management with references from mining and other industries; (ii) discuss the risk measures appropriate for injury analysis; (iii) present a set of analytical tools to injury experience data in under-ground coal mines; (i v) apply these tools on case study example; (v) discuss the results of the case study; and (vi) amplify the application limitations and the future research needs.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has conducted research to improve the nondestructive testing (NDT) of wire hoist ropes. Losses in the diameter of a wire hoist rope are used as one criterion for judging when a rope should be replaced. Losses are determined by periodically measuring the rope diameter and comparing this measurement with the original measured diameter; when the diameter reaches a specified minimum at any point along its length, the rope must be retired. Generally, these measurements are made at randomly selected locations along the length of the rope, using a hand caliper. To provide more accurate measurements and to allow measurements to be taken continuously along the length of a hoist rope, an optical diameter-monitoring system was built for the USBM under contract. Continuous measurements are preferable because, when combined with continuous electro-magnetic NDT results, they can indicate whether losses in metallic cross-sectional area originate from external wear or internal wear and corrosion. Tests of the system showed that the instrument met specifications when measuring wire rope at low rope speeds but was inaccurate at speeds over about 30 m/min (100 ft/min). This report describes the prototype system, presents the results of the test program, and describes the capabilities of the system.

"IntroductionIN THE preceding paper we have learned about Canada's resources of metallurgical coal. There is an adequate amount in Nova Scotia, a very large reserve on the eastern flank of the Rocky mountains, and a strictly limited supply on the Pacific coast. Added to these is an unknown quantity of coking coal in the Peace River district, at present rather isolated but possibly capable of industrial development in the future.The chief use of metallurgical coal is to make iron and steel. For this, an adequate supply of iron ore is required. So we should now scan the Canadian supply of iron ore, the possibility of its increasing use at home, and the probable markets abroad.Trade in iron ore tends to be international, as is the case with many other raw materials. The present tendency with iron and steel, in contrast, is to keep its manufacture within national boundaries, and there is no evidence that this will change much in the years to come. We should keep these two points clearly in mind when considering the disposal of iron ore from Canadian mines. We should remember, also, that the modern blast furnace and steel plant has such a large output that a correspondingly large population, reasonably compact, is needed to consume its products.Large Ore Supply in East, Small in WestCanada has now four major iron ore fields, well situated to serve adequately the eastern half of the country. Wabana .and Labrador are well placed to serve overseas markets and plants on the eastern seaboard and eastern interior of the United States and Canada."

Enhance Fine Particle Flotation by Hydrodynamic Cavitation Difficulties in fine particle flotation are well documented. Microbubble flotation has been found to greatly improve the recovery of fine particles and in situ gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cavitation incorporated in the design of modern flotation machines has shown great performance in fine particle flotation and potentially in coarse particle flotation. In this presentation, we will provide an overview on gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cavitation and its role in fine particle flotation with focus on the progress made in our research laboratory. Hydrodynamic cavitation was achieved and the critical role of dissolved gases in the liquid was elucidated by visualisation in a high intensity agitation cell. The in situ gas nucleation on fine particles by hydrodynamic cavitation was identified by zeta potential distribution measurement in model systems. Gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cativation was found to effectively aggregate hydrophobised fine particles thereby leading to enhanced flotation kinetics. This is an abstract only. No full paper was prepared for this presentation.

Borehole Mining (BHM) is a remotely operated underground and underwater method of extracting (mining) mineral resources by high-pressure water jets. It can be carried-out from the land surface, open pit floor, underground mine and floating platform or vessel. The method is currently in use in mining and exploration of such natural resources and industrial materials as: uranium, iron ore, quartz sand, gravel, coal, poly-metallic ores, phosphate, gold, diamonds, rare earths, amber and several more. Yet another application of Borehole mining technology is construction of subsurface collectors, ground walls and storage for compressed or liquefied gases, oil and other products.

The CCS technique involves the compression of emission gasses in deep geological layers. To guarantee the safety of the site, C02-corrosion of the injection pipe steels has to be given special attention when engineering CCS-sites. To get to know the corrosion behaviour samples of the heat treated steel 1.7225 42CrMo4, used for casing, and the stainless injectionpipe steel 1.4034 X46Cr13 were kept at T=60 °C and ambient pressure as well as p=lOO bar for 700 h - 8000 h in a C02-saturated synthetic aquifer environment similar to possible geological on-shore CCS-sites in the northern German Basin. The isothermal corrosion behaviour obtained by mass gain of the steels in the gas phase, the liquid phase and the intermediate phase gives surface corrosion rates around 0.1 to 0.8 mm/year at ambient pressure and much lower about 0.02 to 0.2 mm/year at 100 bar where the C02 is in its supercritical state. Severe pit corrosion with pit heights around 4.5 mm are only located on the 42CrMo4 steel. Main phase of the continuous complicated multi-layered carbonate/oxide structure is siderite F eC03 in both types of steel.

Enclosed cab filtration systems are typically used on mobile mining equipment to reduce miners? exposure to airborne dusts and diesel particulates generated during mining operations. Various filter configurationscan be used within the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of cabs to remove the airborne contaminants. The air cleaning performance of cab filtration systems is highly dependent on the efficiency of the air filters, the number of filters used and their placement within the HVAC system. This paper shows how to mathematically model cab filtration systems and illustrates a methodology for developing other cab filtration system design models. Node diagrams of several filtration system circuits are illustrated with their mathematical models at steady state airflow and concentration conditions. Laboratory and field data are presented to demonstrate the validity and utility of modeling enclosed cab air cleaning performance. In March 2003, Phelps Dodge started up an innovative pressure leach facility for processing copper concentrates at the Bagdad mine in Arizona. This paper describes the development of the concentrate leaching plant at Bagdad and the operational results from start up to present. Optimization efforts and an approach to mineralogical modeling of the concentrate to calculate oxygen utilization are also presented.

In the first paper on the Russell process presented by Mr. Stetefeldt, in May, 1884 (Transactions, xiii.), the process was treated from a purely theoretical standpoint.. 111 his second paper of October, 1886 (Transactions, xv,), the details of the plant, the chemicals used, and the manipulation in both mill and laboratory were treated. The aim of the present paper is to present economical results recently attained, new data affecting the preparation and manipulation of ore in the mill, and a more complete and systematic scheme of laboratory work. This paper is compiled mainly from Mr. Russell's notes of his own experience. Many of these notes, particularly those relating to work at Cusihuiriachic,* Mexico, have been upon work directly under the personal observation of the compiler, who takes pleasure in thus presenting to the Institute, data and considerations of much interest and value pot only to users of the Russell process, but to mill men generally. The description of the chemicals used and of the preparation of the mill-solutions being' in part the same now as when Mr. Stetefeldt's second paper was published, some use is here made of portions of that paper. No theoretical matter is here given. For a treatise containing also the theory of the process the reader is referred to Mr. Stetefeldt's complete work on " Lixiviation of Silver Ores by Hyposulphite Solutions," now in preparation. To facilitate the consultation of this paper, the following synopsis and index is prefixed. The figures in parenthesis indicate the page of this paper on which the subject is treated.

"A numerical conditioning analysis for mineral recovery estimation was performed for industrial flotation plants, considering the copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and iron (Fe) separability. A modified relative condition number, ?, was presented that allowed sensitivity analysis to be evaluated for the component recovery by means of an analytical formula. This closed form made it possible for the error propagation to be determined from feed, concentrate and tail grades with different orders of magnitude. The ? parameter can be evaluated using available grade data from the design criteria or historical mass balances, in which the variability is typically unknown. Reconciled data from different Cu/Mo concentrators were employed to evaluate the effect of small numerical disturbances in the grade data on the mineral recovery estimation. Higher error propagation was typically observed for Fe. The Mo minerals presented numerical problems, mainly in second cleaners and in the first cell of rougher banks. Lower condition numbers were observed for Cu due to the higher flotation rates.Mass-balance data reconciliation without redundancy was evaluated for a typical Cu/Mo flotation circuit using relative error minimization. Significant relative errors in the mineral recovery estimation were obtained with nonreconciled data in ill-conditioned problems. Negligible improvements in the mineral recovery estimation because of the data reconciliation with regard to the nonreconciled approach were obtained in well-conditioned problems. In addition, the improvements in mineral recovery estimation by using Cu, Mo and Fe in the data reconciliation were nonsignificant with respect to using only the best-conditioned component in well- and ill-conditioned problems.Despite the effort in data reconciliation and data repetition, poor performance may be obtained in ill-conditioned problems, which can deteriorate the flotation rate characterization. The error propagation has a negative impact on the mineral recovery of the first cell, which may significantly bias the flotation rate characterization of both valuable and nonvaluable elements.IntroductionMass balances have been extensively used in flotation processes to determine the mass flowrates (production) and mineral recovery (efficiency) of valuable minerals. Simple relationships for steadystate processes based on the feed, concentrate and tail grades can be obtained by taking a black-box approach. However, the calculation of concentrate flowrates from different components of the system, such as size fractions, chemical elements or minerals, does not satisfy the mass-conservation principle because of measurement errors (Smith and Ichiyen, 1973; Romagnoli and Sánchez, 2000). Mass-balance data reconciliation allows for obtaining a unique solution that satisfies the total and component mass balances, making small adjustments to the process data and taking advantage of the information redundancy (Narasimhan and Jordache, 2000). This methodology, which is based on a constrained weighted least-squares minimization, has proved to be robust when measurement errors are normally distributed, in the absence of gross errors.Commercial software has been developed to conduct massbalance data reconciliation in flotation processes, including MATBAL (Algosys, 2002), BILMAT (Algosys, 2013), JKMultibal (JKTech, 2013), BILCO (Caspeo, 2013) and HSC Chemistry (Outotec, 2013), which accomplish the reconciliation using known data accuracy in the optimization problem. The data accuracy can be obtained by sampling a stream n times in a run, known as repeats, each with independent chemical assays. Some unmeasured variables can be estimated using the measuring redundancy and sensor location. At present, grade and flow rate sensors may be incorporated in flotation to conduct real-time mass balances. Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. The lack of an integrated approach makes the profitability of metallurgical plants lag behind that of other industries despite technical advances that have occurred in recent years. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart” operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. Combining real-time infrastructure with portal technology is becoming an accepted methodology. This paper introduces real-time portals and team sites to support decision making by work- groups which require both real-time and documentary information from manufacturing assets, vendors, head office and the Internet. Workers get insight from the overall process effectiveness index based on key variables such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. Real-time portals and smart clients are part of any real-time performance management (RtPM) solution. Three case studies in large metallurgical complexes are presented. The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative-Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) has established a Pit Lake Committee to enhance the science and understanding for the long-term management of pit lakes. Participation in this new committee is from members of federal and state agencies, industry, and academia, including numerous individuals representing 10 states. Work has begun on a pit lake literature search and review, database, classification, and sampling and monitoring procedures document. Coordination with the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) has been established. Future work will include preparing a prediction and assumption verification document, a report identifying variables upon which water quality is dependent, and an applied remediation technologies document, including an evaluation of the effects of backfilling.
