"LocationThe Strathcona mill ofFalconbridge Limited is located in Onaping, Ontario, 50 km northwest of Sudbury.GeneralOre from the Falconbridge mines in the Sudbury Basin (Strathcona, Fraser, Onaping, Craig and Thayer Lindsley mines) is processed through the Strathcona mill with 8500 t of nickel ore and 1500 t of copper ore being treated daily. Current capacity is -3 Mt of ore at 1.8% Ni, 1.9% Cu combined grade. Custom feeds are also processed. The valuable minerals in the ore are pentlandite (FeNi)9S8, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) with some cubanite (CuFe2S3) and very minor nickel sulphides/ arsenides. Cobalt is present mainly in solid solution in pentlandite. There are small but economically important concentrations of precious metals including platinum, palladium gold, and silver. The common non-sulphide gangue minerals are feldspar, quartz, mica, talc, and chlorite while pyrrhotite (Fe7S8) is the major gangue sulphide. The pyrrhotite contains between 0.6% and 1.2% nickel in solid solution and additional nickel as exsolved pentlandite in micron sized blebs. The nickel and copper ores are batch-crushed in a two stage dry crushing plant and then ground in separate circuits. Concentration by flotation and magnetic separation produces a nickel concentrate assaying approximately 16% nickel plus copper and a copper concentrate assaying 30% copper and 0.4% nickel. The nickel concentrate is trucked as a slurry to the Falconbridge smelter while the copper concentrate is trucked as filter cake to the Kidd Division of Falcon bridge"

My instructions are to introduce the Speakers and to provide a general introduction.I do the latter with humility not only because of a lack of personal experience or because tailings revegation is not well established technology, but because any general statement on a country or industry as diverse as the Canadian Mining Industry is bound to be wrong somewhere.Laying aside normal standards of accuracy I proceed as follows:In considering the question of tailings revegetation, one asks two basic questions:1. What ought to be done?2. Aesthetics is the philosphy of taste. It is concerned with the appreciation of things rather than what they really are. It is much easier to get into an argument on aesthetics than to get out of it feeling you have said something of consequence.Technical criteria can be divided into the following sub-objectives: 1. To isolate the tailings basin so surrounding land is not degraded. The first step here is stabilization of the surface to prevent wind and water erosion."

The roasting process of copper concentrates containing variable quantities of arsenic in a fluidized bed regime was analyzed, considering the technical literature published on the topic in the last quarter century. Although emphasis has been given to the analysis in the fluidized bed regime, other processes have also been considered, under a reducing, neutral or oxidizing atmosphere. The kinetic mechanisms of roasting, as well as the models that have been applied or those likely to be used to explain the kinetics of arsenic removal, are analyzed. Regarding the kinetic mechanisms, those that have been applied to copper concentrates with both high and low arsenic content are included. The roasting kinetic model includes the kinetic data analysis techniques, general models, equations and an estimation of the conversion degree through dynamic, differential and integral methods, as well as particular models for mineralogical components, such as smelter dust and copper concentrates with low and high arsenic content.

The tide has turned. Developments in China that have continued to unfold over the last four years or so have now reached a point where the supply market dynamics of certain industrial minerals have changed significantly. No more is this sea change better exemplified than by the supply market for magnesite, and in particular, its processed derivative grades of dead burned magnesia (DBM), caustic calcined magnesia (CCM), and fused magnesia (FM). But what has compounded the barrage of influencing factors impacting this sector, which include the widespread effects of energy and freight cost increases, has been rising demand from certain end use markets. Clearly, the magnesia market is experiencing bittersweet conditions. But those western producers which have monitored and responded to this market transformation, stand to taste success in the near and medium future. REVOLUTION IN WORLD SUPPLY STATUS In essence, while China, as host to a wealth of magnesite resources in Liaoning province, remains a huge producer of magnesia, its supply dominance on the global magnesia market has been considerably weakened. In future, it will mainly aim to supply domestic, and to some extent east Asian markets. Magnesia consumers outside China are now scrabbling for alternative, ?western? sources of supply. At the same time, magnesia producers outside China that weathered the storm of low cost Chinese DBM and FM imports flooding their regional markets for the last 20 years (and many did not), are busy investing in production capacity increases to meet not just demand from falling Chinese supply, but also demand from end use markets which is picking up. And it is not just a matter of expanding capacity of existing magnesia product lines. In the face of plentiful lower cost DBM and FM substitutes from China over the last couple of decades, many western magnesia producers started to switch their focus to the non-refractory markets (eg. environmental, specialities) which promised lucrative opportunities (and still do) and crucially, a lessening of sales revenue dependence on the DBM refractories market. Now we have the likes of Baymag (Canada), Bommag (Serbia/Turkey), and Kumas (Turkey) not only expanding capacities but seriously considering diversifying into DBM and FM production. Perhaps DSP (Israel), having ceased its famous high purity DBM activity as recently as 2005, might even reconsider a return to the ?other side?. But it?s not all DBM and FM. The CCM and specialities markets are also demanding a response, and so Baymag, DSP, Martin Marietta (USA), Premier Chemicals (USA), Qmag (Australia), MGR (Spain), and Magnifin (Austria) are also stepping up to the market on the non-refractory side. From most accounts, the situation with regard to Chinese supply has been described as one of turmoil, with prices rising, leading to improving opportunities for western producers. The majors are conducting huge expansion programmes, such as Qmag, Magnezit (Russia), and the new look Magnesita (Brazil). Even smaller players such as Causmag (Australia) and Dalmia (India) are looking to increase production. In short, the western magnesia supply sector is witnessing a landmark event in capacity investment and market share penetration as China?s previously dominant role begins to weaken (for a review of western capacity expansions see Industrial Minerals, September 2008, p.28). MERGER & ACQUISITION ACTIVITY Another response of course has been a raft of mergers and acquisitions in order to secure resources and supply outside China. These have included private equity groups taking over Magnesita and Qmag; Imerys entering the FM business through UCM; Peñoles further consolidating the electrical grade FM market by acquiring Minco; Martin Marietta acquiring Morton Salt?s Specialty Magnesia Group; Bomex entering the market through Calmag (now Bommag); LWB acquiring Magnesita; and Magnezit?s pursuit of Slovakian magnesia, with Slovmag aboard while currently wooing SMZ. Interestingly, RHI has gone ?the other way?, and has invested in a state of the art joint venture operation at Dashiqiao, Liaoning, with which it aims to secure high quality feedstock for its Chinese refractory plants. Tata Refractories Ltd has announced intentions to follow suit, and other majors, such as Qmag are known to be interested in seeking options. Naturally, there is now renewed interest from several parties in the idled 50,000 tpa DBM/10,000 CCM Jormag facility, Jordan, and the commercially undeveloped Zhargat project, Saudi Arabia. Elsewhere, there will no doubt be suitors for stakes in SMZ, in Slovakia, and Magnohrom, in Serbia, whose respective ownerships are on the block. THE ?CHINA FACTOR? The ?China factor? has been key to magnesia?s market change, and has significantly influenced prices and availability of material to global markets. Resources & production China hosts the largest share of the world?s magnesite deposits, accounting for 26% or 3,319m. tonnes of predominantly sparry magnesite (followed by North Korea, 24%, and Russia, 22%; Wilson 2008). China accounts for 44% of total world magnesite mined (19m. tonnes in 2007) and 50% of the total world magnesia produced (8.2m. tonnes CCM, DBM, FM; Wilson 2008). Russia follows China at 13% of magnesia supply, illustrating China?s dominance of magnesia production. Apart from one producer in Shandong province, central eastern China, the country?s magnesite resources and production are concentrated around the cities of Haicheng and Dashiqiao in Liaoning province, north-east China. Although there are also producers in the Xiuyan district of south-east Liaoning, the Haicheng-Dashiqiao Magnesite Belt hosts the majority of producers. In total these may number 200-300 of large,

During the 9 years ended December 31, 1938, 188 fatalities resulted from preventable accidents in and around the coal mines of Indiana; 173 of these occurred at underground mines and 15 at stripping or open-cut operations. In addition, there may have been other unrecorded fatalities during this period. The two organizations receiving notice of accidental deaths at coal mines in this State are the Division of Mines and Mining and the Indiana Industrial Commission. Only deaths occurring at underground mines employing 10 or more men are reported to the former, as neither strip mines nor underground mines employing fewer than 10 men cone within the purview of the Indiana mining law. The mine inspectors have no Jurisdiction over this latter group of mines and do not inspect them. Fatalities at small "wagon" mines and open-cut operations are supposed to be reported to the Industrial Commission; however, in many instances deaths at small mines are not reported, the only record being a death certificate filed with the county or corporation health officer. Thus, many deaths in small mines escape attention, especially when the victim succumbs some time after the injury was received. The data presented here on fatalities in Indiana, during the past 5 years include several instances in which the only record available is a death certificate; possibly others have been overlooked. From 1934 to 1937 the fatality record was progressively worse, that of the larger underground mines in 1937 being more than twice the average for these mines for the previous 4 years and only slightly less than twice the average for all mines, including open-cut operations. The increase in deaths during 1937 was due to two explosions, with 20 fatalities in one and 2 in the other. The number of deaths in the larger underground mines was considerably less in 1938 than in the previous 4 years, but there was no improvement in the number of fatalities at the small mines, or at open-cut mines.

Red Dog, the world’s largest zinc mine, is located ninety miles north of the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska on lands owned by the Inupiat Eskimo organization called NANA. NANA received a subsurface title over this resource as part of their settlement lands under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and subsequently entered into a Lease Agreement with Cominco in 1982. Cominco, an international mining company focused on zinc, built and operated the mine. NANA’s principle objective in the development of the mine was to have it contribute to the development of sustainable communities within their traditional region. This meant creating job opportunities in a modern economy while preserving the traditional subsistence lifestyles. Preservation of their culture, language, and traditions are as important to the NANA people today as they were through ages past. The principles of sustainable development – matching economic, environmental, and social goals through continuous communications and high commitment to efficient and effective operations – have been core values for the Red Dog Mine from the beginning. This paper will describe how a large mining operation in a remote corner of the world has been able to contribute toward sustainable development in that region.

In spite of all the work that has already been done on ferromanganese deposits, studies on the Atlantic Ocean occurrences are still in their infancy and there is a clear need for investigations concerning the origin, distribution, and resource potential assessment of these deposits. Nevertheless, studies already carried out on northeast Atlantic seamounts indicate the general presence of ferromanganese deposits of hydrogenetic origin, i.e. deposits formed by direct precipitation of colloidal, hydrated metal oxides that are scavenged from the water column on hard-rock substrates. The hydrogenetic precipitation promotes the enrichment of ferromanganese crusts in many trace metals, most of which are of economic interest, such as Co, Ni, Te, rare earth elements, and platinum-group elements and thus ferromanganese crusts are considered an important metal resource.

"Limit states design (LSD), or load and resistance factor design (LRFD), is a method to account for the uncertainty in loads and resistance through a reliability calibration that requires all applicable limit states (strength, service and extreme) to be checked during foundation design. LRFD has been in use internationally for several decades; however it wasn’t until recently that engineers working on highway projects were required to use the method for the design of highway bridges and other appurtenances. Although the bridge community has been using a form of limit states design for structural components since the early 1970s, the design of foundations for bridges, walls and other geotechnical features had long been performed using allowable stress design (ASD), whereby all uncertainty in loads and material resistance is combined in a single factor of safety. While the move to LRFD was viewed as a more rational approach for the design of bridges and structures, the transition to its use for geotechnical engineering has been met by many with confusion and difficulties in application. This article will revisit the history of transition from ASD to LRFD for geotechnical engineering, summarize the status of the transition and issues with its use, and briefly discuss some emerging research opportunities for improving and advancing the design platform.Background and HistoryUntil about a decade ago, foundations and substructures for bridges were traditionally designed using ASD, while the superstructure was designed using load factor design (LFD), a precursor to LRFD that incorporated factored design loads but no risk assessment. This combination led to uncertain and incompatible safety margins in design for the various bridge components. In 1986, the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures (SCOBS) concluded that the standard bridge specifications in use at the time for U.S. transportation projects had significant inconsistencies and gaps, wasn’t up to date with emerging technology and that the development of new specifications was warranted. The proposed solution by the subcommittee was to transition to a more coherent method of design where applicable failure and serviceability conditions could be evaluated considering the uncertainties associated with loads and resistance."

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. MIGRATOM is a third-generation PC-based computer program developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for geophysical tomography. Like its predecessors, BOMTOM and BOMCRATR, MIGRA TOM was developed to enable users to address a variety of mining-related problems by mathematically reconstructing the distribution of physical properties in a rock mass, using measurements of travel time or amplitude of wave energy propagated through the rock mass. Examples of applications include lithologic characterization, fracture detection, fluid monitoring, stress evaluation, and blast assessment. The resolution and accuracy of tomographic reconstructions generally depend very strongly on the geometry of source and receiver locations. In many practical applications, such as cross-borehole tomography, limited coverage results in nonunique reconstructions. MIGRATOM follows the precedent of BOMTOM and BOMCRATR in allowing the user to constrain the inversion, in order to reduce the nonuniqueness problem. A new approach to application of constraints implemented in MIGRATOM is based on fuzzy logic techniques. Refraction of wave energy is modeled in MIGRATOM using an approach based on Huygens' Principle. Propagation of a continuous wavefront is modeled as a constructive interference phenomenon, which obviates the shadow-zone problem that affects conventional ray-tracing calculations. MIGRATOM has been tested with both synthetic and field data sets.

THE reconnaissance of the Goldfield mining-district, described in this paper, was made in May and June, 1905, and, though this time was too short for a complete report, the work accomplished may serve as a basis for more thorough future research. Dr. Berkey has examined the rocks collected by myself, and I am using his classifications. As a result of further field-work, and Dr. Berkey's examination of the rocks, this paper is an elaboration and correction of my views expressed in the Gold-field Sun, May 12, 1905. The sketch-map, Fig. 1, illustrates the geology of the Goldfield mining-district. Goldfield is an eruptive complex, consisting of alaskite (binary granite), hornblende-andesite, hornblende-dacite, rhyolite, pyroxene-andesite, pyroxene-dacite (sometimes containing, a small quantity of olivine), quartz-felsite, olivine-pyroxene-ande¬site, and basalt. Considering this list to be arranged in the order of eruption, the age-sequence of the rocks conforms to Richthofen's law, formulated in 1868. From his observations in Europe and America, propylite, andesite, trachyte, rhyolite and basalt, occurring together, succeed one another. In a general way, the medium and more acidic rocks precede the most asic-a result supposed by some to have arisen from their relative position beneath the surface, and due to a rude stratification by gravity in the original cooling magma during the older history of the earth, or to the same differentiation occurring during a quiescent (molten ?) period preceding eruption, being aided by the ease with which acidic rocks, mixed with water vapors, become fusible. This paper, a follow-up to an earlier study, gives the history of Canadian developments in mineral processing from 1921 to the fall of 1964. It deals extensively with comminution and flotation, and then goes on to cover the fields of gravity concentration, magnetic concentration, cyanidation, the processing of uranium ores, and instrumentation. Several outstanding examples of installations are given. The paper concludes with a discussion of present-day trends in mineral processing. Introduction T HE history of the developments in mineral processing in Canada from its earliest times to 1920 has already been published by one of the authors (1). The present paper is thus a logical follow-up to bring this history to date. From 1834 to 1920, mineral processing in Canada, as elsewhere in the world, was in its formative stage. This, however, prepared the ground for developments that have resulted in a mining empire from the Atlantic to the Pacific, a mining empire which could be said to be almost on par with that in the United States.

This paper is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on the quarrying, crushing, and grinding of limestone for cement manufacture. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total coats. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers, as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. "INTRODUCTION Sporadic beneficiation tests have been made on the Birmingham (Ala.) red iron ores for the last 55 years. Now, gravity-concentration plants are in operation, of tables are in use. A major problem, as seen by the present writers, is to obtain a coarser concentrate and add to the recovery without increasing the quantity of slime. The oily practicable solution found so far is to recover, by means of concentration (hydraulic) classifiers, the coarse concentrate normally lost in the table middling and, by a similar method, to recover middling particles from the table tailings The size and shape of the coarse concentrate Particles combine to cause them to report in the table middling rather than in the table concentrate. Similarly, mineral is lost in the tailing. Because of this, the nature of the ore, the deportment jerking table, plant tests on classifiers and tables, and the suitability of small concentration classifiers to treat table zonal middlings are discussed herein.The work was done by the Southern Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala."

To solve the problem of large deformation of deep soft rock roadway, taking the soft rock roadway of no. 1 coal mine in New Shanghai as an engineering example, the deformation mechanism of surrounding rock of deep soft rock roadway is analyzed by combining theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field test, and the control countermeasures centering on deep and shallow dense drilling are put forward. Through theoretical derivation, based on the masonry beam theory, surrounding rock structure S-R stability principle and composite beam principle, the length, angle, and spacing of deep and shallow dense drilling are determined. Through numerical simulation, the deformation evolution process of soft rock roadway surrounding rock after dense drilling pressure relief is reproduced, and the influence of drilling parameters (drilling spacing, dip angle) on pressure relief effect is analyzed and compared. The field application test and monitoring verify that the deformation control measures of deep and shallow dense drilling broken roof surrounding rock have a good effect of large deformation control of soft rock roadway, and provide a new support means for the safety and stability control of soft rock roadway.

The Bureau of Mines compiled information for the nonspecialist about natural gas liquids recovery from hydrocarbon streams in natural gas processing plants. Attention is directed to the impact of the technology of processing and the quality of gas processed in view of the increased availability of natural gas for processing. Significant changes in product and market trends within the natural gas processing industry are highlighted. Fixed capital-plant costs for grassroots, refrigerated-oil absorption and conventional adsorption schemes, adapted from published studies, are presented giving ranges of cost estimates for medium-sized plants. Marketed products of the natural gas processing industry are briefly discussed in relation to automotive air pollution problems and approaches to their control.

Prior research has suggested that the source of respirable silica dust in underground coal mines is typically the immediate top or bottom lithology adjacent to the mined seam, not mineral matter bound within the mined coal bed. Geochemical analyses were applied in an effort to identify the specific source rock of respirable quartz dust in coal mines. The analyses also demonstrate the compositional changes that take place in the generation of the respirable dust fraction from parent rock material. All six mine sites were mining coal with relatively low mineral matter content, although two mines were operating in the Fire Clay coal bed which contains a persistent tonstein. Interpretations of Ca, Mg, Mn, Na, and K concentrations strongly suggest that the top strata above the mined seam is the primary source of mineral dust produced during mining. One site indicates a mixed or bottom source, possibly due to site specific conditions. Respirable dust compositional analyses suggest a direct relationship between the quantity of mineral Si and the quantity of quartz Si. A similar relationship was not found in either the top or bottom rocks adjacent to the mined seam. An apparent loss of elemental Al was noted in the respirable dust fraction when compared to potential parent rock sources. Elemental Al is present in top and bottom rock strata within illite, kaolinite, feldspar, and chlorite. A possible explanation for loss of Al in the respirable dust samples is the removal of clays and possibly chlorite minerals. It is expected that removal of this portion of the Al bearing mineral matter occurs during rock abrasion and dust transport prior to dust capture on the samplers.
