A site characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic design of underground structures is presented, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock failure process. It entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing the theory of extremes and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass properties can be estimated using empirical relationships currently available. This results of analyses can be incorporated into the design of underground structures, and then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

In 1917 the Federal Bureau of Mines and the University of Idaho arranged to cooperate in an investigation looking to the improvement of mining and milling methods in the mining districts of the State of Idaho, with an especial view to the wider development of the minerul deposits and greater efficiency in the treatment of the lowgrade ores of the State. This work has been made possible lnrgely through the generosity and active assistance of the mine operators, especially certain companies in the Coeur d'Alene region. As the first step in the work under the cooperative agreement it wa.s decided to gather all data possible on the various mining districts throughout the State, both active and abandoned, in order to ascertain their potential possibilities, especial attention being paid to methods of metallurgical treatment and to the solution of the many metallurgical problems in order to effect a greater commercinl saving. With this plan in view, field work was begun in the latter part of May, 1917, and was continued during the summer. E. K. Soper, formerly professor of mining, University of Idaho, and now dean of the mining department of Oregon Agricultural • College, Corvallis, Oreg., visited the mining districts in central and southwestern Idaho and also some of those in the northern part of the St.ate. D. C. Livingston, professor of geology at the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho, also visited some of the mining districts in central Idaho during the summer; in addition, much valuable information he had gathered on former trips to many other districts is included in this report. Credit is also due Mr. Livingston for the maps covering the State, as well as the bibliography nt the end of each chapter. Thomas Varley, superintendent of the Seattle mining experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, spent a short time in the field, principally in the mining districts in central and . northern Idaho, and made a brief visit to the southwestern districts with Mr Soper. The field work of Mr. C. A. Wright, metallurgical engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in direct charge of the cooperative work, was chiefly in the Coeur d'Alene region. Mr. Wright visited nearly all of the mining districts in the region and devoted most of his time to studying the milling methods. The results of the investigation are set 1iorth in this bulletin. The bulletin aims to give the l9Calities of the various mining districts, and the nature of the present operations and those that have been carried on in the past. The geology is discussed only in a general way, the descriptions being intended more especially to bring out the types of ore deposits and the character of the ores, a knowledge of which is essential in determining the proper treatment of the ores. The writers do not wish to imply that all districts mentioned in this bulletin were visited during the summer of 1917, for a great deal of the material has been gathered from other reports, especially from publications of the United States Geological Survey. However, it is hoped that this report will be of help to those who are interested in mining in the State of Idaho. The plan is to continue the field work and subsequently publish the results of the investigations in much more detail, with greater emphasis given the metallurgical treatment of the ores and the problems involved.

In 1987 Wyoming became the largest coal producing state in the country. The state is known for its extensive coal resources and extremely thick coal seams. Wyoming's coal reserves total about 69.3 billion tons, or 14.2 percent of the U.S. coal reserve. Coal seams range generally from 10 to 80 feet in thickness, although one seam is 220 feet thick. The coal-bearing areas of Wyoming underlie approximately 41 percent of the state's total land area. Wyoming's coal ranges from lignite to high volatile bituminous. Most of the coal produced is subbituminous from the Powder River coal region near Gillette. The presence of coal in Wyoming was discovered before 1834 on the Belle Fourche River. The state's first mine opened in Carbon County in 1865, and with the completion of the trans- continental railroad, the demand for coal increased. Currently approximately 80 percent of Wyoming's coal production is shipped out-of-state to meet the growing demand for low- sulfur coal to fuel electric generating plants. Wyoming received conditional regulatory approval November 26, 1980. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 14, 1983.

The paper refers five examples of executed diaphragm walls with one to five levels of anchorages. For each example a comparison is made between the results of the design using the traditional criteria and the Eurocode 7 recommendations. A comparison is also made with the behaviour of the diaphragm walls during the construction phase. From the referred examples the author presents his conclusions.

Introduction The post World War II nuclear arms race and interest in nuclear power generation resulted in a significant demand for uranium in the 1950’s. This led to the development of uranium solvent extraction technology and uranium became the first metal to be recovered on a large scale by solvent extraction (SX) (1), interestingly more than 100 years after the extraction of uranium from an acid nitrate solution using diethyl ether was first reported by Peligot.(2) For a variety of reasons discussed elsewhere (3,4) there have been upheavals in the supply demand picture and price for uranium since the 1960’s. (Figure 1) The low price of uranium from the mid 1980’s until 2004 resulted in a depression of new resource exploration and mine development along with uranium mine / mill closures and decommissioning. People with skills in uranium processing could not find suitable employment and many experienced engineers and metallurgists took jobs elsewhere or retired. This resulted in a significant brain drain with respect to uranium processing technology.

The underground ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant provides unparalleled ability to ensure safety of the workers, public and environment. Although small spatially, it can vary the airflow from 66,000 acfm to 460,000 acfm. It can automatically incorporate HEPA filtration in the event of radioactive contamination. Remote-capable regulators individually control the four main splits, and can be adjusted from the surface if necessary. A ventilation remote monitoring and control system provides real-time information. Future areas of concern include DPM compliance, system psychrometry, logic-based-real-time mine ventilation simulation and automation using PLC technology. This paper discusses the evolution of this system.

M Y DUTIES, as a member of the Department of Franco-American War Cooperation of the French High Commission were to study the copper and brass industries of America from the mining of the various non-ferrous metals to the semi-finished, or finished materials. In the pursuit of these studies, it was my privilege to visit a number of industries and organizations in different parts of the country. I first visited most of the Eastern copper refineries that were supplying the Allies with vast amounts of metal. These works are producing their material by the multiple or the series process, although the first method predominates. But, regardless of the process employed all the plants attain an exceptionally high standard of quality in their production. One of the points that particularly attracted attention was the manner in which improvements could be traced from the older worlds to the more recent ones. The impression was that, thanks to a spirit of broad-minded cooperation between the principals of the companies and frequent exchanges of views between members of the staffs, all persons interested benefitted by the experience thus gained, to the advantage of the community at large.

The best method to minimise disturbances from traffic to the neighbourhood and in Urban is probably to go underground. For obvious reasons this will cause vibrations, noise and other environmental effects which need very strict regulations and quality assurance in order to complete the work successfully. One project is “Southern Link”, a part of a ring road system. The system of tunnels includes 16 kilometres of tunnels right beneath the south part of the city of Stockholm. At least 20.000 people will be or could be affected by different kinds of disturbances and pollution such as vibrations, noise, gas and groundwater. Another project is the “Arlanda Link”. A new railway with three stations has been built under the existing and running to Arlanda airport with its terminals. Authorities have carefully judged these projects, which cause complaints from neighbours due to disturbances. The blasting operations are professionally managed by the contractors and controlled by consultants to keep the regulations according to the Swedish standards, which are well described in the tender documents by risk analysis and technical descriptions. In spite of that, one conclusion is that it is not always possible to go underground without exceeding stipulated regulations with existing technique. "In 2001, a pile trial site was established at Limelette in Belgium consisting of 25 displacement screw piles and 5 driven pre-cast piles. Interested parties were invited to participate in a pile prediction event, whereby they would submit predicted static load test behaviour in the form of load settlement plots. These predictions could be based on soil investigation results supplied by the organizers, or dynamic load test measurements.Following the submission deadline, the organisers released the results of static load tests for comparison.Of all the six participants, including Statnamic, the SIMBAT method was independently accredited with achieving the best predictions.This paper examines at the differences between SIMBAT and other systems, and presents the correlations from the Limelette trial.INTRODUCTIONThe Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) initiated an ambitious research programme involving the construction and testing of some 60 trial piles spread between two sites, a clay site at Sint Kateline Waver and a sandy site at the BBRI headquarters at Limelette. The project was financed largely by the Belgian Ministry of Economic affairs. (ref 1.) This paper refers only to the second site.At Limelette, six different types of displacement pile were installed: one driven pre-cast and five cast in place screw piles - Atlas, DeWaal, Fundex, Olivier and Omega. The Clyde Power Project, and its Clutha Valley Development forerunner, has taken widespread investigations for various hydroelectric purposes both along the valley floors upstream from Alexandra and on the higher schist terrain. As part of this work the nature and extent of many of the alluvial deposits have been resolved and the ages established with varying precision. Gold values have been approximately appraised in some areas as an element of environmental assessment.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Arizona, Sandia National Laboratories, and Zonge Engineering and Research Organization, Inc., conducted cooperative field tests of six electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods to compare their effectiveness in locating a brine solution simulating in situ leach solution or a high-conductivity plume of contamination. The brine was approximately 160 m below the surface. The testsite was the University's San Xavier experimental mine near Tucson, AZ. Geo- physical surveys using surface and surface-borehole, time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) induction; surface controlled-source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT); surface-borehole, frequency- domain electromagnetic (FEM) induction; crosshole FEM; and surface magnetic field ellipticity were conducted before and during brine injection. The surface TEM data showed a broad decrease in resistivity. CSAMT measurements with the conventional orientation did not detect the brine, but measurements with another orientation indicated some decrease in resistivity. The surface-borehole and crosshole methods located a known fracture and other fracture zones inferred from borehole induction logs. Surface magnetic field ellipticity data showed a broad decrease in resistivity at depth following brine injection.

"Abstract — The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units. © 2012 Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. The application of biologically assisted methods for metal extraction in the mining industry has a long history, but development of modern techniques has been relatively slow. There is, however, a resurgence of interest in the industry with the recent development of methods to successfully treat base metals concentrates. Two major pilot plant programs for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates have been initiated in the past year and results from one are beginning to be released. This paper provides an overview of methods that have been applied in the past; from the earliest deliberate applications of the technology, through the copper and uranium heap and dump leach applications, the more highly engineered agitated tank leach gold applications and the developments currently taking place in the industry.

"INTRODUCTION A report giving experiments dealing with factors affecting the floatation of the most commonly occurring silver minerals was published years ago. At that time we could not obtain suitable samples of many of the so-called sulfo-salts of the base metals, which are generally silver--bearing and which comprise an appreciable percentage of the natural silver ores. Since Leaver and Woolf's work was published, samples of impure tennantite and enargite have been obtained, and considerable experimental flotation work has been done with synthetic mixtures prepared from these samples. During the present national emergency, research dealing solely with the recovery of gold and silver must necessarily be curtailed. However, many deposits of strategic minerals and critical base metals contain an appreciable amount of gold and silver, the recovery of which would aid greatly in recovering the strategies by taking care of a considerable part of the cost of treatment. Because of this, the recovery of precious metals should not be overlooked entirely. As the Bureau of Mines is now utilizing all of its facilities for the development of increased domestic productions of strategic and critical minerals, this is the last report not concerned primarily with such minerals that will be published until the war ends."

Titanium is a metal of increasing worldwide strategic importance. The Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) at Montana Tech of the University of Montana is currently directing two titanium research initiatives. The first program, Titanium Extraction Mining and Process Engineering Initiative (TEMPER), is focused on producing low cost titanium through the identification and development of new mining, beneficiation and extraction technologies which will significantly reduce the cost of titanium production. This will directly benefit worldwide commercial applications. Secondly, CAMP is evaluating new technologies for fabrication of titanium utilizing the Free Form Titanium Fabrication (FFTF) initiative. These technologies may drastically reduce the cost and time to manufacture titanium components. Because of the high strength to weight ratio of titanium coupled with its superior corrosion characteristics, these programs will be of vital importance to expanding the commercial and strategic applications of titanium. An overview of these two new titanium initiatives will be presented in this paper.

In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Pyramid RARE II area (No. 5023) covering 23,500 acres (9,500 ha) of E1 Dorado National Forest and 7,900 acres (3,200 ha) of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (fig. 1). The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal mineral deposits in the area. Samples taken from silicified and limonite-stained metasedimentary rocks and aplite dikes were void of precious or base metals or uranium. Placer samples from stream gravels contained no gold values. Molybdenite occurs in quartz stringers within quartz monzonite near Grass Lake, adjacent to the area; no extension; were found in the area.

Abstract. Study on nonlinear damage localization process of rocks under water chemical corrosion is a more interesting topic in rock mechanics research world widely. It is very important in estimating long term stability of rock engineering, design of nuclear waste repository and its performance estimation, geothermal and petroleum development. This paper reports that new development of study on the topic, including methodology, results of meso-mechanical test, real-time CT scan test and acoustic emission test, temporal fractal behaviors, neural dynamic modeling and chemical-induced damage law, etc. This paper also discusses the research directions of the topic in the near future. Zusammenfassung. Untersuchung zum durch die chemische Corrosion induzierten Schaedigungsprozess ist einer der Trends im Gebiet der Felsmechanik. Sie ist zugleich ein sehr wichtiges Forschungsprojekt u.a. fuer geotechnische Langzeitstabilitaetsanalyse, Langzeitsicherheit eines Endlagers, Erdwaerme- und Erdoelfoerderung. Dieser Aufsatz stellt die neusten Entwicklungen in den folgenden Teilgebieten zusammen: Untersuchungsmethoden, Laborversuchsergebnisse der Mikromechanik, der Computer-Tomographie und der akustischen Emission, zeitabhaengige Fraktaleigenschaften, Modelle fuer die Nervendynamik sowie Modelle fuer chemie-induzierte Schaedigungen. Zum Schluss werden kuenftige Forschungsschwerpunkte bzw. –richtungen diskutiert. Résumé L’étude du processus de la localisation de l’endommagement du à l’érosion chimique est un thème d’actualité pour la mécanique des roches. Elle est également un sujet de recherche d’importance dans l’évaluation de la stabilité à long terme des ouvrages rocheux, l’analyse du system de stockage des déchets nucléaires et l’évaluation de son comportement, l’exploitation de l’énergie thermique et pétrolifère, etc. Cet article présente le développement actuel dans ce domaine, incluant la méthodologie d’étude sur le processus de la localisation de l’endommagement dû à l’érosion chimique, l’analyse des essais mécaniques avec l’observation microscopique, du balayage en temps réel (CT), et de l’émission acoustique. On aborde ainsi modèle des caractéristiques fractural du temps, le modèle de la mécanique dynamique neural, ainsi que la loi de comportement d’endommagement dû à l’effet chimique. Enfin, les perspectives relatives à ces études sont présentées et discutées.

The authors have proposed and discussed storage of low temperature materials such as LNG, LPG and frozen food in rock caverns. In this case, as the rock mass around the caverns will receive effects of low temperature, it is necessary to consider the thermal behavior and the stability of caverns. In this study, strength and deformation characteristics obtained by the uniaxial tension test and the compression test at low temperatures were discussed. Using the results, temperature and stress distribution around caverns when LNG was stored, were analyzed. Then thermal behavior of the rock mass around caverns was discussed. Die Autoren haben Lagerung von Niedertemperatur-Materialien wie LNG, LPG und tiefgefrorenen Nahrungsmitteln in Felskavernen vorgeschlagen und diskutiert. Da in diesem Fall die Felsmasse um die Kavernen den Effekten der niedrigen Temperatur ausgesetzt ist, ist es erforderlich, das Thermalverhalten und die Stabilität der Kavernen zu berücksichtigen. In dieser Untersuchung wurden Stärke-und Deformationseigenschaften, die durch ein-axialen Spannungstest und Kompressionstest bei niedrigen Temperaturen erhalten wurden, diskutiert. Mit diesen Ergebnissen wurden Temperatur- und Stressverteilung um die Kavernen bei Lagerung von LNG analysiert. Dann wurde das Thermalverhalten der Felsmasse in der Umgebung der Kavernen diskutiert. Les auteurs proposent et discutent l'entreposage de matériaux à basse température, tels que le GNL, le GPL et des aliments congelés, dans des cavités rocheuses. Comme, dans ce cas, la masse rocheuse entourant la cavité subit les effets des basses températures, il est nécesaire d'étudier le comportement thermique et la stabilité des cavités. Dans cette étude, les auteurs discutent des caractéristiques de résistance et de déformation, obtenues par essai de tension uniaxial et essai de compression à basse température. En se servant des résultats, ils analysent la répartition de la température et des pressions autour des cavités, lors du stockage de GNL. Ils discutent ensuite le comportement thermique de la masse rocheuse autour des cavités.

This circular deals primarily with the various methods of longwall mining used in some mines in certain districts of the Middle Western States. In some instances underground methods were considered comprehensively, and in others only the actual methods of mining and face advance were noted. Results obtained by the mines in output per man were compared only on the basis of an operating day, since idle time and number of men employed would not, be comparable due to the great difference between mines in different districts. Man-hours per ton per operating day are noted in a general way. Material and power costs are not included. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The information used in preparing this paper was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the presidents and other officials of the comparnies operating the mines described. The approval of the executive of each property was obtained for publishing this manuscript, and the accuracy was checked.
