Abstract: The formation and mechanism of rock cavern roof arches are studied and effects of rockbolts reinforcement are evaluated. It is concluded that a self-supported roof arch may be formed by the excavation. To stabilize such a roof arch, fully grouted rockbolts are effective. Tensioned cable anchors may have a negative influence on the arch stability. Zusammenfassung: Die Formation und der Mechanismus von Deckenbögen in Bergkavernen wird studiert und der Effekt von Verstärkung mit Bergbolzen wird bewertet. Es wird festgestellt, dass die Exkavation einen selbst-stützenden / freitragenden Deckenbogen formen kann. Eingegossene Bergbolzen sind effektiv um einen solchen Deckenbogen zu stabilisieren. Spannkabel können unter Umständen eine negative Einwirkung auf die Stabilität des Bogens haben. Résumé: Le mécanisme et la formation de voûtes dans les cavernes rocheures sont étudiés et l'effet du renforcement par boulonnage est évalué. Nous arrivons à la conclusion qu'une voûte autosupportêe peut être formée par excavation. Des boulons entièrement scellés par coulis de bêton s'avèrent efficaces pour stabiliser de telles voûtes. Les tirants d'ancrage peuvent quant à eux nuire à la stabilité de la voûte.

DURING the past 15 years in this country there have been few additions to the literature of lead smelting. After the consolidation of the principal smelting companies at the beginning of this period it became the policy of the larger company not to permit the publication of details in regard to many of its metallurgical processes. This led to similar action on the part of some of its competitors. The result, of course, was a decided decrease in the number of papers written upon the practical side of the subject. Even upon the theoretical side the contributions have been few. It would seem that the industry as a whole has suffered from this general unwillingness to exchange information. While it is true that a given company is entitled to the reward that may come from its own development of a new process, it is also true that a still greater reward might be the result of a free exchange of ideas with other plants. This principle has been recognized for a long time in other metallurgical industries, notably those engaged in the smelting of iron and the manufacture of steel. It is pleasing to note that the leading lead-smelting company has very recently decided to modify its policy of secrecy, and to permit the publication of papers covering some details of its metallurgical methods. The statement has been made that there has been but little progress in lead smelting during the period just referred to. This impression is due in part to the scarcity of papers written on the subject. There has been, it is true, some discussion of the new sintering processes, but with little reference to detail, and to the effect that blast roasting has had upon the industry as a whole. In spite of the prevailing belief, it may be said that lead smelting, in common with other metallurgical industries, has made steady and substantial progress. It is the purpose of the present paper to discuss briefly some features of the industry as it is now conducted, with special reference to the blast-furnace practice in the larger silver-lead smelting plants of the United States and Mexico.

Traditional iron ore wet beneficiation plants are large multilevel structures, often integrated into centralised processing plants. They are characterised by sizeable footprints, substantial water and power consumption, inflexible design and low scalability. Significant design changes that address these issues need to be made before relocatable modular plants become feasible. Firstly, large amounts of processing water are required in standard wet plants, so it is vital that water consumption is reduced to an absolute minimum. Secondly, the process of depositing tailings into tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is environmentally destructive, consumes significant power and requires lengthy approvals to be completed. Thirdly, modules need to be easily and quickly relocatable.The solution to reducing water usage and eliminating TSF requirements is accomplished by providing a tailings dewatering and dry-stacking capability into a separate module. This equipment needs to dewater tailings to a point (typically below 20 per cent moisture) where dry stacking becomes possible – design is mainly driven by material rheology and particle size distribution (PSD). In this respect, a flexible and scalable strategy is employed to dewatering modules, allowing a variety of components such as dewatering cyclone clusters, paste thickeners, fine mesh vibrating screens and filter presses to be used to achieve the necessary moisture level, enabling the final dry stacking to be accomplished by a simple telescopic stacking system. Plant relocatability also requires modules to comply with mass and dimensional constraints, as well as ‘plug and play’ ease-of-use features.For coarse particle upgrade, jigs provide a low-cost and effective solution, whereas fine and ultra-fine Fe units can be recovered using Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS). Recently, sensor sorting – a dry process using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray transmission, laser or other sensors – has begun to make an impact in coarse particle separation, although capacities are still low. The overall objective of a plant is to provide an Fe upgrade of four to five per cent with a feed of up to 4 Mt/a and a recovery of approximately 50 per cent.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. Markets and Production Beryllium (Be), an extremely light metal, is used in many specialty applications. It the lightest element in Group 2A of the periodic table, with a specific gravity of 1.85 gm/cc, and a high melting point of 12850C (Calvert, 2004). The functional properties of beryllium are stiffness, strength, dimensional stability, resistance to corrosion from acids, and electrical and thermal conductivity. The ability to reflect neutrons and transmit x-rays, makes beryllium irreplaceable in uses such as precision optical components, inertial guidance systems, and in nuclear reactors (Anon, 1993). Beryllium is used in Cu alloys to strengthen and reduce corrosion in copper wire, and in lightweight oxide ceramics that are used as heat sinks, and as electrical insulators. If an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM is operated effectively tunneling can be carried out producing negligible ground movements. Using the methods given in this paper face losses of the order of 0.5% and less are generally obtainable using an EPB. Operating the EPB TBM in this manner reduces the requirement for the building protection measures used to protect surface structures. This can result in a considerable cost saving for the construction of a tunnel under built up areas. This paper to give guidance on the causes of ground movements around a TBM and the methods of running an EPB TBM that will minimize those movements. Details of how this was successfully done during the construction of the Bangkok Metro are given. Before the present century there existed a fairly persistent demand for the establishment of a Federal Department of Mines, but relatively little was done about it until a considerable number of very serious coal-mine disasters in 1906, 1907, 1908, and 1909 created what might almost be termed a national scandal and virtually forces the Federal. Government to take action to try to solve the problem of the cruse and prevention of such disastrous occurrences. Instead of a Department of Mines, the mining people had to accept a bureau, which was created on July l, 1910; and while the Bureau of Mines was given numerous functions, unquestionably the promotion of safety in the mineral industries was and continues to be one of its main "jobs." The Bureau's organic act was approved in 1910 and amended in 1913. Both the original and amended acts indicated that promoting; the health and safety of the mine workers constituted the chief function of the Bureau, and that this was the construction placed on its activities by those put in charge in 1910 is shown very definitely by the fact that as soon as the Bureau came into existence on July 1, 1910, both health end safety activities were started in its Mine Accidents Division. Before the end of the first fiscal year (June 30, 1911) 6 mine safety stations had been established in various parts of the United States, add 6 nine safety cars had been put into the field; by October 1910 first-aid-training work was being done in mining regions. The Bureau eras able to function so promptly in its safety work largely because sections of the Geological Survey, which had been doing some coal-mine safety work since 1907 or 1905, were transferred into the Bureau when it began to operate in July 1910. On October 30, 1911, a national First-Aid Meet was held at Pittsburgh, Pa., at which first aid and mine rescue were demonstrated. During the fiscal year 1910-11, the first year of the Bureau's existence, 509 persons were given certificates indicating completion of the Bureau's training course in first aid.

Monotonous flood planes flanked either side of the road as we drove in the embassy car from the airport to downtown Seoul. We crossed the brown waters of the Hann River, meandering over mud flats. A great, gnarled tree bore beautiful fall colors of gold. "That is a Ginko Tree, the oldest living fossil, probably a hundred million years old;" said Jean W. Pressler. Compared to other cities of the Far East, the traffic in and around Seoul was sedate. Few motorcycles or bicycles, and little superfluous horn tooting. "This is the best season in Korea. We have long beautiful springs and falls," said Pressler, chief of the mining branch of USAID, and he continued with a briefing on the country.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of leaching zinc from the tailing (-2 mm) of Angouran flotation plant using sulphuric acid. The tails were first calcined at 800¦C for one hour. The effect of factors such as stirring rate, temperature, initial acid concentration and solid/liquid ratio, on zinc extraction were studied. The results obtained show that at the best conditions, about 91 per cent of zinc were leached using a stirring rate of 800 rpm, a reaction temperature of 50¦C, a 30 minute reaction time, a 100 g/L initial sulphuric acid concentration and solid:liquid ratio 1:6 g/ml. The P85 of the feed material was about 150 ¦m and acid consumption was 600 kg/t.

Traditionally, mineral sands are evaluated by preparing several mineral products using a combination of heavy liquid-, magnetic-, and electrostatic methods. Whole-rock assays (WRA) are then conducted on ilmenite, rutile and zircon products in order to determine trace element contents, which may affect project feasibility. Combined methods can be time consuming, expensive and even outdated due to the use of banned and toxic chemicals such as clerici solution. Coupled with large field-sample quantities, these procedures can potentially introduce unacceptable sampling and related errors. Modern mineralogical analysis techniques can provide complete mineralogical inventories on a single THM product, reducing the amount of processing involved in satisfactory characterization of early exploration samples. A small exploration sample can be processed to produce a small THM concentrate using readily available gravity/density methods. In turn, the THM product is submitted for Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) and mineralogical inspection by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and microscopic evaluation. Modal mineralogy and textural data can be determined using optical methods, automated image analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) based systems. Benefits of automation are reproducibility and the capability of rapidly analysing thousands of particles as opposed to manual optical methods. Automated systems include the use of Automated Digital Image Analysis (ADIS), and SEM-based systems such as the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) and QemSCAN. For detailed mineral chemistry, microanalysis techniques ranging from electron microprobe (EMPA) to Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Laser Ablation Mass-Induced Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) are used. Examples of these automated and analytical methods are presented. ADIS at SGS-Lakefield Research uses optical characteristics to identify and measure mineral species in THM samples; rutile, pseudorutile, ilmenite and leucoxene can be distinguished. Analysis of a single THM product provides bulk modal mineralogy and grain size distribution of particles and the individual mineral grains. Textural information is also obtained detailing mineral associations as well as degree of alteration. Where textural and chemical resolution renders mineral identification ambiguous, SEM-based methods offer better resolution. Examples of this ambiguity are shown in this paper, which leads to QemSCAN as the preferred method where within-grain variability is concerned. Sampling and measurement strategies are followed to meet study objectives, providing a value-added framework for a sequential, cost-effective strategy, which will meet due diligence and bankable accreditation criteria. Studying a THM product by electron microprobe and LAMICP-MS may reveal potential fatal flaws related to mineral chemistry. Low detection limits in the range of 200 to 500ppm are possible using electron microprobe analysis for suitable matrixes (U, Th in zircon). For the detection of ultra low level elemental contaminants, LAM ICPMS is the most accurate method of evaluation. Elements including U, Th, La, Ce, Nb, and V in Ti-minerals can be determined down to 50 ppm.

Currently, the Bear Canyon Mine is facing the challenge of excessively high coal and rock temperatures in one of its headings. In Mine No.3, the air temperature at the 6th Right panel reached 36.4ºC and the coal 83.9 ºC. Due to these severe work conditions, the mining plan has been altered by changing the mine direction to avoid the high temperatures. To investigate the problem, drill holes were developed from the entries and the rock temperatures monitored using K-type thermocouples. The measurements confirmed the existence of localized “hot spots” in the mine. This paper presents a summary of ventilation surveys that were conducted in this mine. It includes the results of coal and rock temperature measurements from drill holes, interpretation of results using a heat flow simulator and the identification of hot spot areas. It also includes a summary of methods that were developed to reduce the hazard and control the problem.

Nickel is recovered as a by-product of the platinum-producing process operated by Anglo Platinum. The metal is mined mainly as sulphide minerals contained in platinum ores. These pass through the concentrating, smelting and converting process route and nickel is finally recovered by electrowinning. Smelting of the concentrated ore in the electric furnace produces a melt with a high slag to matte ratio. The resulting furnace slag is granulated and later milled and floated to recover matte. A project was initiated to investigate the distribution of nickel in the slag in order to improve recovery. Slag samples were examined using a combination of chemical and mineralogical techniques. The granulated slag was found to consist mainly of a silicate glass phase, which reflects the composition of the molten slag in the furnace. Nickel occurs as free matte granules, as matte phases locked inside the glass, and in the glass phase itself. Whereas nickel in the matte is as sulphide, most of the nickel in the glass phase appears to be oxide- bound(i.e. in solid solution). Milled slag as flotation feed showed recovery-limiting features such as free matte with oxidized surfaces and unliberated matte inclusions in the slag. The biggest nickel losses, assuming no tapping problems, are in the glass phase solid solution. Only around 40% of nickel would be recovered from the slag, even under ideal conditions. Spoon and pot slag samples were also examined to see if casting and crushing would improve recovery. Although larger and therefore more easily recovered matte phases formed, nickel partitioned into crystalline silicate phases, limiting the maximum theoretical nickel recovery to 70%.

The newly discovered South Arturo deposit is a Carlin-type, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located on the Dee Mine property at the north end of the Carlin Trend in Nevada. The Dee Gold Mine was discovered in 1981 by Dee Delamar, a Cordex geologist. The property was put into production by Rayrock Mines in 1984. During its 16-year mine life, the Dee Mine produced about 18.6 t (600,000 oz) of gold from oxide ore at an average production rate of about 1.24 to 1.55 t/a (40,000 to 50,000 oz/year). In October 1997, Bar-rick Gold Exploration acquired the right to earn a 60-percent interest in the Dee property from Dee Gold Mines through an exploration farm-out agreement. Barrick Gold Exploration began exploration activities on the property in 1998 and vested in its 60 percent operating interest in 2004. However, the discovery hole at South Arturo was not drilled until July 2005 from atop the historic mine dumps located 300 m (985 ft) south of the Dee openpit. The discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 75.6 m (248 ft) of oxide mineralization grading 1.9 g/t (0.055 oz/st) gold beneath 260 m (855 ft) of dump material and post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Oxidation within the deposit extends to depths greater than 610 m (2,000 ft). The deposit has passed the prefeasibility test and is presently in the feasibility stage. Exploration is on-going to enhance or enlarge the known deposit. The current resource for the deposit stands at 40.4 t (1.3 million oz) of gold. The South Arturo discovery is an example of an historic mining property yielding a new discovery through the diligent application of area selection criteria of the model type and persevering when early results were generally negative. Barrick?s original exploration pro-grams on the property were focused on the discovery of deep, high-grade sulfide deposits that would likely be mined by underground methods. As it turns out, South Arturo is mostly oxidized and will be amenable to mining by openpit methods

Introduction Gold mining on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly dependent on low-grade refractory sulfide ores that contain large amounts of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). Gold is usually present as sub-microscopic particles dispersed evenly throughout the sulfide matrix. Without some form of preoxidation, efficient recovery of this finely disseminated gold through cyanide leaching is hampered because the surface of the sulfide particle becomes passivated and impervious to penetration of the cyanide. Traditional methods for recovery of refractory gold from arsenopyrite ores include roasting and autoclave leaching. A modem alternative method is to preoxidize the mineral using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans prior to attempting to re- cover the gold through cyanidation. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite ores presents a problem in the mobilization of large quantities of arsenic, present both in the +5 and +3 ionic states. Dissolved arsenic species pose a dual problem: they are -1 to the bioleaching process itself through inhibition of bacterial activity, and they also pose an environmental threat. The arsenate anion (AsO2) has been shown to be more toxic to living organisms, including Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, than the arsenate anion (AsO43) (Collinet and Morin, 1989). There is some disagreement as to the fate of arsenite in bioleaching solution. Mandl, Matulova, and Docekalova (1992) reported that dissolved arsenite concentration was constant during a long-term bioleaching study of chalcopyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Torma and Oolman (1992) report that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been found capable of oxidizing As3+ to As5+. The solid products of arsenopyrite/pyrite bioleaching include jarosite (MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 where M can be K+, Na+, NH4+ or H3O+), scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O), ferric hydroxides, and ferric hydroxysufites (Carlson et. al., 1992; Van Breemen, 1982; Lazaroff et. al., 1982). The particular species formed is a function mainly of pH. Little study has been performed on the effect of solid products on bioleaching. Pesic and Kim (1993) showed that Thiobacillus ferrooridans cells served as a nucleation sites for jarosite particles, which grew rapidly and eventually killed the cell. Most bioleaching studies are performed at low pH&apos;s (<2.0) under uncontrolled conditions. By studying bioleaching of arsenopyrite under controlled pH conditions and at higher pH&apos;s (2.0 to 3.0), the distribution of iron and arsenic between the solid and liquid phases can be controlled, and their effects studied. The objective is to develop a bioleaching process that operates at high efficiency while keeping amounts of dissolved heavy metals low. Pesic, Stohok, and Torma (1993) demonstrated the usefulness of this approach in the leaching of cobaltite (CoAsS) concentrates. Materials and Methods The focus of this study was the bioleaching of arsenopyrite ore by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The parameters studied included the effects of pH, and the effects of arsenate (AsO43 and arsenite (AsO2). pH studies included pH set initially but not controlled, and pH controlled continuously with NaOH or LiOH. Bioleaching results from two strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with different adaptation histories were compared. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in 150 ml stirred glass reactors using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans adapted to arsenopyrite ore, supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These bioreactors were innoculated with stock cells grown on arsenopyrite ore for 14-16 days. Typical elemental breakdown for this ore was: As, 9.90%; Fe, 18.60%, Stot, 9.26%; Suifide, 7.50%; SiO2, 25.90%. Mineralogically, the ore contained both arsenopyrite and pyrite. Bioleaching efficiency was measured by withdrawing bioleach solution samples at selected intervals, filtering, and measuring the amount of dissolved cobalt, iron, and arsenic by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Because the precipitation of iron and arsenic at higher pH&apos;s would lead to unreliable results, a 100 mg tracer of cobaltite concentrate from the Blackbird mine in southern Idaho was added to solution. Dissolution of the cobaltite tracer was used to indicate bioleaching of the bulk arsenopyrite ore. An equilibrium study was carried out at 1873 K to ascertain the effect of carbon in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-MnO-FetO slag systems on their FetO and MnO activity coefficients, representing the slag?s thermodynamic potential for steel reoxidation. Both ?FetOand ?MnO showed not only a sharp increment, but also a simultaneous slow decrement by increasing carbon content in slag, suggesting opposite roles of the carbon according to its stable forms. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) was introduced to clarify the stable forms of carbon in slag. XPS results prove that carbon dissolves in slag as carbonate, and carbide ions under oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, respectively. It was concluded that carbonate ions increase ?FetOand ?MnO, and that carbide decreases them. This paper suggests an application method of the present results to actual ladle refining processes, in order to enhance steel cleanliness without decreasing (FetO + MnO) content in slag. Risk and dispute resolution are linked. Dispute resolution techniques are brought to bear on a dispute - which is an outcome of a risk being wholly or partially realised. There has been an increasing awareness by business of risk as a component of doing business. There is an accompanying awareness of the need to manage risk - including legal risk. Many companies have undertaken a systematic review of their potential risks and endeavoured to put in place systems to help to avoid or manage risks. A legal risk management program will not prevent disputes arising. However, such a program should prescribe how that dispute will be managed. The management of the dispute will involve consideration of the dispute resolution procedure to be adopted. The most appropriate processes will take into account the practical, personal and commercial considerations surrounding the dispute and be as efficient, cost-effective and user friendly as achievable in the circumstances for the benefit of all the parties. Carrying on business in South East Asia, whether as an explorer or a mining operator, brings additional considerations to bear in legal risk management and the dispute resolution process. A significantly different perspective is required due to the varying nature of the legal systems in many South East Asian jurisdictions. These jurisdictions often have relative uncertainty as to the law. This impacts on the dispute resolution processes and also raises further timing and cost issues. The authors contend that this is all the more reason to endeavour, as practically as possible, to adopt a legal risk management and dispute resolution profile which will provide business with the greatest prospects of maintaining control of the dispute resolution process. This presents a greater chance of a successful outcome to the dispute. In these times of increasing pressures on profitability because of low mineral prices, all costs of a minerals business are being reviewed. In such times, a significant legal dispute may have even greater potential to adversely impact on the companies concerned, together with the careers of the people involved. In this paper possible approaches to managing disputes and a case study a legal dispute in which Freehill Hollingdale and Page were involved are discussed. The dispute concerned an international mining company developing a gold mine in Indonesia and one of its contractors in Indonesia. Described is how that dispute was resolved. This achieved a very satisfactory result for the client - all things considered. Given the æadditionalÆ problems associated with ascertainment and enforcement of ærightsÆ in South East Asia, the longer the parties can retain control over their dispute the better off they will be. For this reason, the authors set out in this paper the main additional dispute resolution tools available - that are appropriate for use throughout South East Asia.

This paper illustrates the use of variography and moving average plots as an aid to analysing variations in the process that can be used to direct the improvement efforts. The hydrometallurgical processes used in manganese metal production consist of sequential unit operations that include milling and reduction of manganese ores. Leaching of the reduced ore, is followed by solid-liquid separation, residue disposal, solution purification and electrowinning of manganese metal completes the process. The nearly 250 integrated process control loops rely on reports of pH, flow pressure, level, temperature and chemical analyses. Metallurgical accounting, reconciliation and process control is achieved through monitoring of the chemical and mass balances within the manganese reduction plant, requiring approximately 50 000 analyses of solids, powders and liquids each month. The largest numbers of samples are taken in the cell house. Changes and variations monitored by sample statistics ensure that the manganese products comply with predetermined specification limits. Optimising the information-value of the approximately 50 000 samples in the manganese plant is carried out in tandem with ongoing process optimisation. Variographic analysis of daily sampling data suggests that the cyclical behaviour evident in the moving average plots is only a reflection of random residual variability and not a reflection of true underlying variability related to cyclical phenomena. Low resolution in the variogram of daily sampling data masks the short-range variability that emerges when hourly data are analysed. Hourly samples collected over a 39-day period (giving 941 sample data), helped identify short-range cycles in the process. The relative distribution of variability for daily sample intervals, indicate that 57 per cent arises from V[0], 18 per cent from V[process] and 16 per cent from random residual variation. V[0] includes all the uncontrolled sampling error arising from a poor sampling protocol, the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. This confirms the suspicions regarding the suboptimality of the sampling protocol and the way it is implemented. The absence of long-term trends in the leach suggests that short-term variation (less than one day) dominates the process. While the control charts indicate that the overall processes are maintained above the lower specification limits and the target values, there is nevertheless a considerable amount of variability in the system that overhangs the processes and threatens to impact them negatively. Although the variability in the leach is above the prescribed limits, the volatility is a matter of concern because it seems to be uncontrolled. The comparison of the various sources of variability in data collected on an hourly basis suggests that the short-term random variability (V[0]) accounts for almost 50 per cent of the variability in the process. The main source of this variability is due to errors in the sampling protocol and is probably related to the size of the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. Remediation of FE and GSE will probably lead to a reduction in V[0], whereas V[process] could be mitigated by reducing the biases associated with DE and EE in particular.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Concentrator is located 28 kilometers east of the city of Timmins, Ontario. Two types of ore are treated; 'A' type, a copper-zinc-low silver ore producing copper and zinc concentrates, and 'C' type, a copper-lead-zinc-high silver ore producing copper, lead and zinc concentrates.The ore is processed at a combined rate of 12,400 metric tonnes per day through four parallel grinding and flotation divisions. Three divisions treat the 'A' type ore and the fourth treats the 'C' ore. Each division is fed from its own fine ore bin.This paper reviews the grinding section with specific emphasis on grinding media consumption and the factors affecting it as related to 'A' type ore. At Kidd Creek there was an awareness that grinding media consumption varied on a weekly and monthly basis. The reasons for this variation was usually attributed to ore hardness as evidenced by short term variations in the circuit feedrate and head assays. However, there has been a diversity of opinion published in recent years regarding the factors contributing to steel consumption. This initiated a study of historical Kidd Creek operating data, from the period 1970 to 1986 inclusive, to determine the effect of various operating parameters on media consumption. The results of the study could then be used as a baseline for future media consumption testwork."

The room-and-pillar mining method is used extensively in underground limestone mines in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. The rock mass is typically a near-horizontal, bedded deposit at relatively shallow depth. A survey of 34 mines was conducted in which data on roof spans, rock mass properties and support practices were collected as part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health research project into ground control in limestone mines. The average room width is 13.5 m (44 ft), accommodating large mechanized equipment. The results show that the immediate roof beam can consist of many individual layers and can contain several near-vertical joints. In spite of the room widths, the roof is naturally stable in many mines. Observed roof instabilities can generally be related to excessive horizontal stresses or unfavorable geological structures that cause block fallout or beam failure of the bedded roof rocks. The survey showed that the rock mass quality of the limestone does not vary significantly throughout the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. Roof conditions and the need for support were found to be closely related to the thickness and competence of the first layer of limestone in the roof. The findings highlight the need to identify local geological structures and the roof beam characteristics so that support alternatives can be evaluated. Monitoring and observational technologies that are available for identifying potentially unstable roof are presented, which include: roof characterization using the Rock Fall Risk Index, automated logging of roofbolt hole drilling, microseismic monitoring and displacement monitoring.
