On December 26, 1994, at 1:00 am, Santa Fe Pacific Gold's Twin Creeks Mine experienced a major highwall failure involving over 2.5 million tons. The resulting effects of this slide were thousands of ounces of gold that were now deferred and an unstable wall above which made mining the slough material unsafe.

British Columbia (BC) is Canada’s most western province. The landscape in BC is amongst the most beautiful and pristine in the world. Along with its beauty come vast mountain ranges, coastal rain forests, swamplands, deep river valleys, and almost every type of landscape imaginable. These all have, or at one time had, logging roads constructed. Some of these areas should never have had roads constructed due to poor drainage and unstable slopes, but some of the roads could be considered engineering masterpieces. To navigate a vehicle the size of an off-road logging truck down the side of a mountain with an 80°h side slope or greater can be a hair-raising experience. Not to mention coastal rains and/or high elevation blizzards. These factors collectively make logging BC’s most hazardous occupation. People are seriously hurt, sometimes even killed everyday.

During the Summer of 1997, rock excavation was carried out for construction of the Centre Block Underground Services building (CBUS) abutting the most historically significant structural complex in Canada, the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Controlled blasting was required for the removal of 25,000 cubic metres of limestone bedrock within the ten week time window of Parliamentary recess. A test blast program carried out in 1996 had established that close blasting was viable even within the very restrictive limits considered necessary to preserve the structural and cosmetic integrity of these historic structures. In total 300 blasting operations were required to complete the excavation, including the 20 test blasts conducted in 1996. Based on attenuation characteristics established for the site during the trial blast phase, the blasting contractor proposed excavating the CBUS site in three zones. Each zone contained differing drill patterns, depths and explosive loads. Vibration intensities, air concussion levels and displacements across representative existing cracks were measured and recorded at numerous observation points within and around the Centre Block and the Library of Parliament, as well as on the grounds of the Parliamentary Precinct. The blasting portion of the excavation was completed within budget in less than eight weeks, well within the tune window available. Comparison of very extensive pre and post-blast condition surveys revealed no damage to the existing structures on Parliament Hill as a result of these operations.

Rare indeed has a major cross country natural gas pipeline met and surmounted such obstacles as the Iroquois Gas Transmission Line from Canada to Long Island, New York. Of the 370 miles long length a fair estimate has been that 1/3 or 122 miles were across rock country. Spread One, Four and Five were particularly difficult. If is estimated that over 75% of the required blasting was on those three spreads. The term "spread" goes back to the old term of describing a ranch.

HE Chile Exploration Co.'s mine and reduction plant are at Chuquicamata, Chile, on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert, 163 miles northeast of Antofagasta, 80 miles from the Pacific Ocean, and 70 miles from the Bolivian border and at an altitude of 10,000 ft. Guggenheim Brothers started prospecting in -4pri1, 1912, and purchased the main property, in October of that year; the property is now controlled by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., which acquired it in January, 1923. The orebody strikes north 10" east, and has a dip of about 64" west. The length, as far as developed, is approximately 1% miles; the width averages sightless than mile.

Blasting is the most effective and economical tool available to fragment and move rock for most applications. If properly executed, it can improve down-stream operations such as loading, hauling and crushing. It is not possible, however, to have full control over the energy released by the explosives when a poorly designed blast pattern is used. A poorly designed blast can produce serious damage to equipment and create a potentially hazardous condition to people. Advanced mining technology has been developed to address these potential hazards and optimize the blast pattern. This profiling technology can assist with blast planning and provide quick, precise data about the condition of the rock structure to be blasted. The 3G BlastMetrix system presented here uses three-dimensional (3D) stereo photogrammetry to model the rock mass in a fast, practical and safe manner. Through the image overlapping method, a 3D model is created with thousands of points that provide a significant amount of data regarding geology, geometry and topography conditions. The blasting plan can then be made in a way to optimize the rock fragmentation and avoid areas that could create flyrock. This paper is a case study concerning usage of stereo photogrammic surveying and borehole survey systems in a blasting operation at the Brazilian Quarry, Incopel. One 3D image of a drilled bench was generated using photogrammetry survey technology and the borehole survey data collected using the rodded Boretrak borehole survey system. Utilizing the minimum burden profile reports, explosive loading could be done accurately, resulting in an optimized blast with good heave and fragmentation as well as increased safety.

A large open pit iron ore mine in Brazil, which has a heterogeneous lithology, faces a challenge in defining drill and blast patterns to achieve the expected results. The mine needed to obtain an automated representation of the fragmentation curves and correlate them to the respective blasts, lithologies and quality parameters, seeking the continuous optimization of the fragmentation process and its benefits to the subsequent comminution processes. Trials were carried out for 5 months to demonstrate the functionality of an autonomous fragmentation monitoring system that analyzes the granulometric curve of the material throughout the muckpile and makes the results available online and in real time. The system, which contains a binocular camera, a processing unit and an antenna, was installed in a shovel, to evaluate the following KPI's: monitoring failures, monitoring capacity, physical availability and reportability of oversized boulders. The system analyzed 33,060 samples, with an average capacity of 285 photos every 24 hours, 127 during the day and 158 at night, all measured, analyzed, stored, and made available on its online platform, reporting 223 alerts of P80 above 400mm (15.7 in) and 38 particle sizes above 900mm (35.4 in). The inactive and operational hours of the monitoring system corresponded, respectively, to the idle and worked hours of the shovel, according to dispatch data. There were no camera or processor failures, and rain, dust or poor internet conditions did not impact sampling and fragmentation analysis, indicating 100% physical availability of the system. The autonomous monitoring analyzed 139 times more samples compared to the currently used manual method. In addition to increasing sampling representativeness and automating the process, it increases the safety, quality, and productivity of granulometric analysis, eliminating the exposure of people in the mine and human bias in the analyses. Additional analyses were performed by correlating digitally centralized drill and blast data, data from autonomous drills and fragmentation results. Automated obtention of granulometric curves favors quick decision-making and optimization of blasts to achieve better results in productivity and cost reduction in the plant and mine operation. The autonomous fragmentation monitoring system met the need presented by the mine, proving to be a key tool in continuous improvement projects, including Mine to Plant.

The use of angled shot holes can be extremely effective in blasting faces that either have a great deal of toe burden or where it is difficult to give a drill access to a face due to backbreak and face erosion. However many quarry operators are wary of using angled holes because of the perceived possibility of increased flyrock and uncertainty of the driller's abilities to drill at the designed angle.

This paper describes a situation that many drilling and blasting contractors have found themselves in – a client?s fear of the use of explosives. In the summer of 2007 Blasting Services Ltd was asked to undertake some drilling and blasting work in an abandoned quarry that was being restored for a housing development. Previous quarrying operations had left a series of overhangs that were considered unsafe and required removing. The site contractor considered that the best and safest way to carry out this work was by drilling and blasting. Blasting Services Ltd, with the technical assistance of Exchem Explosives, designed a drilling and blasting regime to accomplish this work with a series of trim blasts. The design took into account the close proximity of a structure in very poor condition and the imposed vibration limit of 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.). The faces were profiled, holes drilled and explosives ordered. A few days before the first blast was due to be carried out the client decided that the poor condition of the nearby structure meant that the use of explosives could not be permitted. This decision was made despite the blast design indicating that the vibration level would be well below the 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.) limit.

The main problem in blasting a fly-over spanning a main road is the brief time available for blasting and the removal of the debris, in order to minimize the ensuing traffic disruption in the public highway below. The blasting plan is consequently based on an extreme "time is money" concept, in which speed and public safety are predominant factors. This paper discusses reliable blasting parameters for this type of demolition.

Almost one half of Canada's total land surface is underlain by permafrost. This term describes the thermal condition of earth materials when their temperature remains below 0°C continuously for a number of years. The drilling and blasting of frozen materials requires more energy than the blasting of same in its unfrozen state. The cost of comminution could double in permafrost even with adequate organization, drilling equipment and proper explosives.

Blasting effectiveness must be gauged by total production costs. ANFO charges made up in polythene "sausages" are not as profitable as is indicated by the price of ANFO. All-slurry charges are warranted only where blastholes cannot be dewatered effectively, or where drilling costs are very high. An increase in blasthole diameter leads to coarser fragmentation. This effect is most pronounced in tough and massive or blocky strata, or in ground which consists of unfissured boulders in a softer matrix. When ANFO and some slurry-type charges of small diameter are used in plastic-acting ground, charges may fail to detonate through precompression by charges fired on an earlier delay. The optimum blasthole length is rarely less than four times the burden distance. For best results, blastholes should be inclined to the vertical and parallel to the face. Nominal burdens and spacings are often altered radically by the initiation sequence. For best fragmentation, all blastholes must have good effective faces, and should be effectively stagg- ered with an actual spacing:burden ratio in the approximate range 2.0-5.0.

Introduction The Britannia mine is at Britannia Beach, on Howe sound, approximately thirty miles from Vancouver. The first claims were staked in 1898, and a local company was formed at that time to develop them. In 1904, Mr. Grant B. Schley became actively interested in the property and in the following year the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, was incorporated to operate it. This Company was taken over a few years later by the Howe Sound Company, Limited. The mine comprises five more or less separate ore-bodies, which have produced approximately 20,000,000 tons of ore to date. The East Bluff ore-body, with which the present paper deals, is well suited to large-scale mining by means of carefully placed powder blasts. It covers approximately an acre and lies in the slate footwall, in a bay produced by a fault. The hanging-wall side, on the west, forms the face of the Bluff glory-hole, which extends to the 1,200 level. A portion of this ore was available for breaking into this old glory-hole, below which four bulldoze chambers could quickly be built. Mining of this block is complicated by a very soft footwall, which 'runs' badly when broken. In stoping, care is taken to guard against the hazard of dilution by deliberately leaving a small portion of ore on the footwall. Some of this will undoubtedly be lost, but it is hoped to recover a fair amount of it after the major drawing is completed. The deposit occurs in a greenstone which has been highly silicified following brecciation. The chief minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite. Concentrates of copper, zinc, and pyrite are made at the mill. The average grade of ore runs 0.7 per cent copper, 1.5 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold per ton. The rock, which is practically a chert, is extremely hard, but shatters well. Both in stoping and drifting, holes must be closely spaced and powder used generously. Development When development work started in the East Bluff, there were no raises and only one drift on each level in this section of the mine. After blocking out the ore by thorough diamond drilling, a production of two thousand tons per day was set as a goal. To obtain this tonnage from so small an area required a great deal of carefully planned and well timed development work.

The film you see is a slow motion view of a typical half million ton taconite blast at one of Erie's mines. This blast is made up of 220 drill holes and a total of 325 thousand pounds of blasting agent. The second view of the same shot is taken by a remote control hi speed camera located 1500' directly in front of the blast. Shortly you will see some violent camera movement as the air blast shock wave strikes the camera location. As the blasting sequence progresses the rock fly becomes evident, and if you will look closely amidst the clouds of smoke, rock fragments weighing up to 1/2 ton begin to cascade into view. These missles are the chief concern of blast security. The next camera shot at 4000 frames/second vividly describes the primacord firing lines detonating the blast. Travelling at 22,000 ft./sec., this white snake of fire travels to each hole, detonating the blasting agent. Before we get into the matter of blast security, let me locate our operation for those of you not acquainted with Minnesota's iron ranges and tell you something about our company.

The mining method at the Cannon Mine uses heading and bench stopes, which are subsequently backfilled with cemented high-strength fill prior to pillar removal. The dimensions of the pillars, 24 feet wide by G5 to 95 feet high, re-quire careful blasting in order to not damage the rock, compromising pillar strength and complicating later removal. Additionally, the proximity of dwellings makes vibration control a must for good-neighbor relations. A blast monitoring study was conducted in order to optimize bench blasting practices to maximize fragmentation, reduce costs, minimize well damage, and minimize ground vibration.

The Fording River Operations of Fording Coal Ltd. in southeastern British Columbia is producing 45 million long tons of clean metallurgical coal for shipment to the Japanese steel industry on a 15 year contract. The mine employs conventional truck/shovel operations as well as a walking dragline to mine coal in two mining areas. The coal is processed by conventional means to produce 3.0 million long tons per year of medium volatile coking coal.

THE successful exploitation by opencut methods of the low-grade porphyry copper deposits is due to the economical handling of large tonnages. Large tonnages are possible only if the rock material is broken so that the large power shovels can operate with minimum delays. This is particularly true at the New Cornelia mine, where the dense, hard, tough rock material creates problems not encountered in most of the porphyry copper mines. The introduction of churn drills at the New Cornelia for primary drilling, in 1936, necessitated a complete change in the methods of breaking ground as formerly air drills had been used. The blasting operations are of particular interest because of the handling of great quantities of high explosives in safely and efficiently fragmenting the hard rock material. ROCK FORMATIONS At the New Cornelia mine the rocks are quartz monzonite with a diorite border facies intruding a rhyolitic series. Overlying these formations is a fanglomerate formation composed of boulders of monzonite, diorite, rhyolite, and other types of rock of unknown derivation. (The word "fanglomerate" is used in this paper in referring to the local conglomerate type of rock formations.) The ore body is approximately 4800 ft. long and 2800 ft. wide, and is of the disseminated type. Mineralization occurs principally the quartz monzonite and to some extent in the adjacent diorite and rhyolite. The principal ore minerals are chalcopyrite, bornite, and a small amount of chalcocite. Over a considerable area the quartz monzonite is extremely hard and siliceous in character, owing to pegmatitic zones of alteration. The hardness of the ground depends on the intensity of the silicification. In a small area in-the pit, the monzonite contains an abundance of pyrite accompanied by sericitization and is soft and easily fragmented. This is true also in the remaining oxidized portion of the ore body. The diorite and rhyolite formations, like the monzonite, vary from extremely hard to very soft material, but on the whole are easier to fragment than the monzonite. jointing is prevalent in all the rock formations and plays an important role in the blasting efficiencies. In the fanglomerate formation, numerous well-defined joints, widely spaced, tend to make the ground blocky when blasted. This is a deterrent to good fragmentation. In the other rocks the joints are more numerous and are closely spaced, except in localized areas where the formations are extremely hard. These descriptions indicate that the lowest blasting efficiency will be obtained in the harder formations, from which the major portion of the mine production is obtained; namely, the monzonite and rhyolite. The fall of rock from strip coal mine highwalls continues to be the largest single source of fatal accidents, so methods to improve highwall stability through improved blasting practices were investigated in the field. This paper covers the results of a project to improve, using existing and proven technology, unstable highwall conditions through better blasting practices in Appalachian strip coal mines. Better borehole blasting agent distribution and optimization of burden, spacing, and delay periods allowing satisfactory breakage with minimal backbreak were the objectives. At a selected field site, geologic conditions were closely examined with regard to joint orientation and spacing, and resulting slope stability considerations. Utilizing surface blasting concepts of trying to achieve flexural failure of the rock mass both horizontally and longitudinally by appropriate relationships between burden, spacing, and hole length, as well as delay time sequence to achieve optimal confinement and breakage, successful results were achieved. A test series of eight blasts was completed and the resultant highwall monitored by repetitive photography. Actual blockfalls could be measured and the stability for each blast design thus quantified. The study of drilling and blasting economics along with equipment performance led to an economic model of blast parameters and the identification of blast design cost benefits. The work demonstrated that small strip mining companies are able to achieve a more stable highwall excavation utilizing presently available technology, equipment, and explosive products at improved operational cost and safety.

THE blasting practices described are fairly representative of those employed in the coal mines of Eastern Canada. As such, they may be of interest to Western Canadian coal mine operators. The treatment of the subject is general, no attempt being made to discuss blasting operations at any particular coal mine in detail. All the mines dealt with are mining bituminous coal and are classified under the Coal Mines Regulation Act of the Province of Nova Scotia as 'closed light' mines. As such, they are required to use only 'permitted' explosives and to apply them in a 'permitted' manner, except where authority is given by the Mines Department to do otherwise.
