This paper has addressed the issues that constitute major obstacles to the cost- effective and efficient operation of metallurgical vessels from the refractory standpoint. Refractories generally withstand severe conditions of high temperature reactions as well as physical loading/impingement and hence degenerate and need replacement. Scarcity of some refractory materials especially high alumina and magnesite ores in some places, the prohibitive cost and the frequency of replacement of damaged refractories threaten the continued support for metallurgical operations. Some of the causes, prevention and cure for refractory wear have been discussed and rational strategies (short and long term) have been recommended which if implemented should go a long way towards arresting the perennial problems they portend.

"A procedure that is being studied as a potential method for correct disposal of industrial wastes by incorporation on common clay bodies in the fabrication of structural ceramic products as bricks, blocks and roof tiles. The objective of this paper is to present the results obtained with mixtures of unburned sanitary ware wastes with a common clay from Jundiai, São Paulo, Brazil. Preliminary tests of incorporation (1,0% to 30,0% in weight) were made with hand formed spherical test bodies. With the proportion that presented spheres with the higher compression strength after drying and after firing (950°C) prismatic samples were extruded. Based on the ceramic properties of those mixtures an industrial test was performed. Six hundred hallow blocks containing 30% waste were fabricated and presented ceramic properties similar to those without incorporation. Introduction The sanitary ware segment has a very great prominence in South America, placing Brazil as one of the greater producers of the world.. Inside the country, the city of Jundiai, in the State of São Paulo is the greater producer region of this ware. Great part of the material is destined to exportation and daily it is produced high number parts. High exportation requirements make that the amount of powder waste rejects reach astronomical volumes. Until the moment too small part of that material it is re-taken with advantage, because in the own segment, there is not an economic viability, by the fact of the exigencies concerning the quality of the final product [1]. If from one side it exists that material that at the moment is deposited in landfills, or stored at the patio’s factories, from the other side the exigency of adopting exploitation rules, recycling and obedience to Laws relative to the environment as ABNT 10400, therefore it is a material that if well studied, it will certainty have a noble destiny [1]."

Nonferrous metal recycling not only provides energy saving and environmental benefits but also is a significant factor in the supply of various types of metals used in our society. Recycling plays an important role in establishing the sustainability of materials. The total amount of recycled nonferrous metals by weight accounts for less than 5% but their value is larger than 50% compared to ferrous metal recycling which consists of about half of the total metal recycling in weight. This paper describes trends and typical achievements in nonferrous metal recycling and overviews the present and future of nonferrous metal recycling technology and business in Korea.

"The influence of cooling intensity on the solidification structure and ferrite phase content of a new duplex stainless steel (DSS) was investigated by using a thermal simulation setup for continuous casting. The results showed that the characteristics of the solidification structure were similar to their industrial scale manufactured slabs, including chill zone, colunmar zone and equiaxed zone. And austenite morphologies were mainly primary and secondary Widmanstatten sideplates as well as intragranular Widmanstatten plates. In addition, it revealed that the ferrite content increased with an increasing distance from the chill surface and decreased at colunmar to equiaxed transition (CET) position, then the value remained relatively stable at equiaxed zone. Furthermore, the ferrite content presented the same trend with the cooling intensity ranging from 100 mL/min to 2000 mL/min with the values just varying in a slight range.IntroductionThe duplex stainless steel (DSS) is the kind of steel that ferrite phase and austenite phase occupy about 50% respectively, or the content of the fewer phase has to be more than 30% [l]. The success of modem duplex stainless steels is to a large degree due to their higher strength than austenitic stainless steels, higher toughness than ferritic stainless steels, good weldability and high resistance to stress corrosion cracking as well [2,3]. The cost of stainless steel production continues to soar in recent years due to the increasingly higher price of Cr. In order to decrease the production cost, a new type of duplex stainless steel was developed by Bao steel [4]. This newly developed duplex stainless steel had low Cr content compared with 2205 DSS, and was expected to be applied into automobile industry. However, this type of steel was still in the initial stage of development, and the influence of continuous casting process on its solidification process and structure was still unclear, which needed to be studied further. Several works published in literature presented the effect of continuous casting conditions on duplex stainless steel (DSS) 2205, 2304 [5,6]. It was discussed that the cooling intensity in the chill-side had little efficient influence on the phase transformation. In this paper, the effect of cooling intensity on the solidification structure and ferrite volume fraction of this DSS at a given cooling rate was investigated."

It is stated that the specific character of SPHTS specimens of TiCx consists in crystal lattice strength reflecting the condition of synthesis in ?burning wave?. The use of roentgenographic and other methods of analysis allow to estimate the effect of the conditions of synthesis causing the carbon sablattice defect on the grinding intensity of TiCx -phases. The study of the kinetics of vibratory grinding of TiCx -phases in ethanol and benzene medium allows to establish high grinding intensity of the phases close to stoichiometry and the possibility of producing high dispersion powders (Ssp 4.5-6 m2/g).

AMAX Base Metals Research & Development, Inc. has developed a process for treating copper-nickel mattes to produce copper cathodes and a pure nickel sulfate solution. In this process, the input matte is preleached in a copper sulfate electrolyte bleed solution so as to dissolve nickel from the matte and cement copper from solution. The preleach leaves a substantially pure nickel sulfate solution. The residue from the preleach is roasted to less than about one percent sulfur. A portion of the calcine is leached with sulfuric acid to make a copper sulfate solution for input to the tank house. The residue from this leach and the remaining calcine are smelted to form a bimetallic (copper/nickel.) anode. The anodes are electrolytically refined and copper is preferentially deposited on the cathode while the nickel reports to the electrolyte, A bleed stream is taken from the electrolyte and used in the preleaching of the input matte. This process produces high purity metal streams while consuming less energy and smaller amounts of reagents as compared with other matte processes.

"Microstructure of semisolid slurry of Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloy was investigated with pulse magnetooscillation (PMO) treatment, the results showed that the PMO treatment can refine the crystal structures of Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloy significantly. The discharging frequency of PMO had a great effect on the solidified structure transformation of semisolid slurry of Al-4.5wt. %Cu alloy, and the primary a-Al particles become much finer and rounder with an increase of discharging frequency. However, over a certain discharging frequency, the grains of primary a-Al become coarse.IntroductionOver the last decade, a lot of attentions have been paid on metal rheoforming process [1-4], since it has higher mechanical properties of formed components, strength to weight ratio and age hardenablity. Nevertheless, semi-solid forming is always performed at high solid fractions (40%-60%), so it has the limitation of viscosity, a tends to be difficult to pour semisolid slurry into the hole of the shot sleeve. Therefore, a series of novel semi-solid slurry preparation methods and rheoforming techniques have been invented, such as, semisolid vibration treatment [5], rheocasting [6], pulsed magnetic field process [7], annulus electromagnetic stirring [8], via ultrasonic vibration process [9], equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) process [l0] and straininduced melt activation (SIMA) process [11].The electromagnetic field is characterized by its effective grain refinement, green, convenient manipulation and without contamination of melt. The mechanisms of dendrite was fragmentation by electromagnetic field have also been largely proposed [12-14]. The broken dendrite arms then undergo a coarsening process to provide the globular structures and obtain much finer and rounder a-Al particles. When compared with other external electromagnetic techniques, Pulse Magneto-Oscillation (PMO) has obtained more fuvors, owing to narrower pulse width and much lower energy consumption. Furthermore, the PMO treatment can reach finer grains with shorter time treatment [16, 17]. This work aims to study the effects of different discharging frequency ofPMO treatment on the microstructure transition of the semisolid slurry of Al-4.5 wt.%Cu alloy."

"Anodic copper slimes produced during the electrolytic refining of copper are routinely batch leached to remove copper. At the Amarillo Copper Refinery, an atmospheric leaching process was converted to an autoclave pressure leaching system to improve the removal of copper, reduce the consumption of oxygen, improve leaching times and enhance tellurium recovery. The benefits of pressurized versus atmospheric leaching of slimes were soon realized by obtaining the desired level of decopperization in a shorter time and with lesser quantities of reagents. The autoclave was designed and constructed with a unique oxygen injection system that enables good control of the leaching process and with no plug-ups. Other features include a mass measuring system that balances the quantity of slimes to be leached to the desired final solution concentration based on initial feed concentrations. The end result was a more efficient and controllable leaching process for removing copper from anode slimes.IntroductionThe electrolytic refining of copper consists of an electrolytic cell filled with a sulfiiric acid based electrolyte and pairs of copper anodes and cathodes. When a current is applied, copper in the anode dissolves and is plated onto the cathode. Impurities within the anode that are more noble than copper do not dissolve and end up at the bottom of the cell and are referred to as slimes. Gold and silver are the main slimes constituents of interest because of their monetary value, but there typically are significant quantities of selenium, tellurium, lead, antimony, arsenic, bismuth, nickel, silica and tin. Copper is also present, usually as a metallic or as a reactant with tellurium, selenium, oxygen or sulfur and can range from 10 to 30% of the slimes fall."

We argue that a set of majorchallenges to world systems of commerce and politics will coalesce in the next several years. We develop four scenarios which differ according to how these challenges are handled, and which scenario actors play the key roles in managing the transition.

"Thin film multilayer anti-reflection coatings (Si02/Si/Si02) having thicknesses 286/571/143nm were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering deposition technique on 0.5mm thick Si(100)-substrates. Post-deposition annealing is also carried out in the temperature range 150-650°C for 4hr at the rate of 10°C /min. Si Optical window was designed at 4.21lm wavelengths and correlated with modeling software. The films are transparent in the 3-51lffi band of the electromagnetic spectrum, firmly adhered to the substrate. The prepared multilayer thin films are characterized optically and structurally using a spectrophotometer, an atomic force microscope, x-ray diffraction and a scanning electron microscope. Optical and structural characterizations show that the %transmittance is between 60% and 75%, no appreciable change in crystal structure and roughness of coatings vary between 9 and 25 nm when annealed in the temperature range of 150-650oC. Local elemental characterization on the surface of the thin film was carried out using energy dispersive spectroscopy. The quantitative result of energy dispersive spectroscopy has also shown that the ratio of Si to 0 on the film is 0.67: 1.IntroductionSi02 thin films have unique properties in the interfaces with Si and most studied materials in the field of microelectronics and optical devices [1]. Multilayer thin films are using nowadays in the design and fabrication of the shrinking systems with a variety of fields such as optoelectronic devices. The physical properties and parameters can be controlled at scales of microns down to nanometers by using RF magnetron sputtering system [2].Silicon and Silicon dioxide are used as coating materials [3]. These thin films are laid on top of each other in SiO2/Si/Si02 order by RF magnetron sputtering on top of a substrate as given in Table 1."

"A novel technology about interactive roast of complex bismuth sulfide ore with low grade and Pyrolusite was put forward using the low-grade bismuth sulfide ore and pyrolusite as raw materials. The predominance diagram of Bi-Mn-S-O system was drawn by thermodynamic calculations. Stable coexistence area ofBizO3 and MnSO4 and its control condition was obtained. The interactive roast conditions including roasting temperature, roasting time, the ratio of n(MnO2)/n(S), ventilation rate and so on are investigated systematically. The results show that the sulfur-retained ratio reaches about 98%, in which formation rate of MnSO4 was 94.04%, most of the residual sulfur in the ore exist in the form of BhsO32(SO4)10 in the roasting products The optimum roasting conditions were as follows: roasting temperature of 650°C, roasting time of2h, 1.4 for n(MnO2)/n(S) and 140L/h for ventilation rate.IntroductionBismuth is a ""green"" rare metal with the characteristics of safe, nontoxic and low melting point[l].The use of bismuth and its oxides is extending from traditional fields such as pigment, fusible alloy, bismuth class of drugs and metallurgical additives to the high-tech fields such as semiconductor, high-temperature superconducting materials and nuclear power and so on. Bismuth is one of the precious advantageous resources in China which owns the most abundant bismuth resources in the world. Bismuth metallurgical process is divided into the pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy [2-4]. Hydrometallurgy for bismuth is mainly used for the processing oflow-grade complex bismuth ore, whose key steps are oxidative leaching process of the bismuth sulfide ore by strong oxidants(FeCb, Clz, HNO2 etc) in hydrochloric acid system. Therefore, the corrosion of strong oxidants, high demand for equipments and poor operating environment are its inherent disadvantages. Pyrometallurgy for bismuth is mainly used for the processing of high-grade bismuth raw materials or concentrate, which is the main method for bismuth metallurgy at present."

In Chile, a significant amount of mining takes place in varied geographical environments. Mining activity extends from copper and gold deposits located in the Atacama Desert 4.500 meters above sea level to underground coal workings beneath the sea floor. This diversity in location and environment presents many challenges in the development of competitive and environmentally sustainable mining activities. An important future issue will be how to close these mines in an appropriate way once economically exploitable ore reserves have been exhausted. This poses challenges for both the government and companies alike, considering that Chilean law currently lacks legislation specific to mine closure. This paper examines the risks associated with mine closure based on international experience, and identifies those risks specific to Chilean regions. The main regions in Chile where mine closure legislation should be applied are identified.

"Latin America is facing a rapid increase in internet use. Penetration with electronic equipment is in some countries approaching the level of industrialized countries. There is an evident need to resolve the management of “end-of-life” computers and other electronic equipment. Several studies in Latin America assessed the increasing e-waste quantities and confirmed the importance of a sustainable e-waste management. This paper gives an overview on the status on e-waste management in Latin America, explains the challenges for establishing an e-waste management system in a developing country setting and highlights the social and economic potential and the possibilities of a regional approach.IntroductionGlobal ICT-Trade and generation of e-waste from ICTThe global production of electronic devices and particularly of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) faces the biggest industrial expansion of the history: OECD figures show that global trade of ICT technologies has reached 7.7% of the gross world product by 2004, the major proportion accruing from China [1]. In 2006 an estimated 230 million computers and 1 billion cell phones have been sold worldwide which corresponds to a volume of 5’848’000 t [2]. As a consequence, Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), or e-waste, is by far the fastest growing waste component. It reaches more than 5% referred to Municipal Solid Waste and e-waste generation in developing countries according to UNEP is expected to triple by 2010 [2].According to the OECD e-waste is “any appliance using an electric power supply that has reached its end-of-life” [3]. The European WEEE directive [4] distinguishes 10 categories of ewaste: Big household appliances, Small Household Appliances, IT and Telecommunications Equipment, Consumer Equipment, Lighting Equipment, Electrical and Electronic Tools, Toys, Leisure and Sports Equipment, Medical devices, Monitoring and Control Instruments, and Automatic dispensers. In this paper e-waste and WEEE are used as synonyms. Focus will be laid on e-waste from IT equipment (IT-waste), corresponding to category 3 of the European WEEEDirective."

Stainless steel is increasingly used as a cathode starting sheet. It was shown earlier that even when depositing copper on copper, a substrate-influenced zone appears in the deposit structure, followed by a transition zone and finally by the electrolysis-influenced structure. On copper, the substrate-influenced zone has a thickness of twenty micrometers and on titanium, eventually more than fifty micrometers. Initial nucleation and growth have a considerable influence. In this paper, copper was deposited in a channel cell on four different 304 stainless steel substrates: mechanically polished and anodized, respectively, at 0, +400 and +800 mV/SHE in 1M H2SO4 at 20°C. Copper was deposited under electrowinning conditions after solvent extraction (SX) (40 g/l Cu++, 180 gh/l, H2SO4, 20 or 60°C). The results showed that, although Auger surface analyses of the substrates were only slightly different one from another including the oxide thickness, nucleation and initial stages of growth were very sensitive to the surface treatment of the substrate. Potential step and current step methods gave similar results : progressive nucleation followed by 3D diffusion controlled growth. The highest nucleation frequency was observed on stainless steel anodized at 0 mV/SHE, under various electrolysis conditions. The potential influence of these findings on industrial practice is discussed.

Dissolution of gold with sodium bromate solutions of various compositions was studied by using a rotating disc technique. The role of bromide ion, acid and externally added bromine was examined. It was found that sodium bromate could not dissolve gold in the absence of either acid or bromide ion, or both. When acid was absent, no bromine necessary for gold dissolution could be produced. When bromide ion was absent, formation of soluble gold bromide species, AuBr,-, was not possible. Bromate concentration had a complex effect, and it was dependant on bromide ion concentration. For fixed initial bromide ion concentration, gold dissolution rate increased with sodium bramate concentration increase until certain level, beyond which further increase of bromate concentration decreased the gold dissolution rate. The negative effect of bromate was explained by the depletion of necessary bromide ion. Sulfuric acid concentration effect was a function of initially present bromine.

"Steel industry has been expanding every year, consequently there has been an increase in waste generation in this area. Thus, companies in this sector are finding it difficult to give a correct destination of waste. For example, only in a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter are generated about l8kg of dust per ton of steel. The aim of this work was the characterization of dust generated in the BOF converter. The characterization was performed by chemical analysis (titration for iron and its oxides and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy for other elements), scanning electron microscopy, size analysis using Mastersizer 2000 equipment and X-ray diffraction. It was observed that dust is composed mainly iron in form of magnetite, metallic iron and wustite with approximately 99% of the particle size below 100 µm.IntroductionToday, steel is a important metal for the world. It can be produced for two routes, blast furnace/ basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter and electric arc furnace (EAF) [1].First route, the iron is produced from the reduction of iron ore and coke for fuel injection and! or natural gas for a production of pig iron in blast furnace. The pig iron is sent until BOF converter to perform the blowing of oxygen to obtain the steel. In the second route, the steel is produced using scraps or direct reduced iron (DR!) using electric arc.During steel production are generated a lot of wastes like slag, sludges, scraps and dust [2]. Only in the first six months of201O, world steel production totaled 706 million tons [3]. According to Watson and Wang [4], some 10 to 20 kg of dust is generated per tonne of liquid steel produced. Thus, the reuse of these wastes can be a great to companies, because it reduces the amount of raw material to be extracted and reducing disposal costs [5,6]."

This manuscript describes the Kivcet treatment of lead-bearing materials having high contents of copper and zinc. The tests were carried out on bulk concentrates from the Zyrianovsk Mining and Concentrating complex, "Kazzinc" JSC (Kazakhstan) with the following composition: Pb 37.6%, Cu 10.4% and Zn 6.8%. Two properties of the concentrate were under investigation: their calorific value and their desulphurization rate. By adding flux, the charge properties were brought close to the properties of high-grade lead sulphide concentrate. The charge was melted with high productivity. To ensure high copper recovery, Waelz residue was added to the charge. The residue contained more than 20% carbon and about 30% iron metal. The residue was partially replaced by coke that facilitates high copper recovery into the matte. The smelting achieved a production rate of 20 t/h with one burner. Lead recovery into the lead bullion was 88.8%; copper recovery into matte was 92.3%; zinc recovery into slag was 75.5%; and zinc recovery into the fume was 5.1%.

The paper describes the design and operation of pulsed columns as replacements for conventional mixer/settlers. The advantages, which the columns offer, include a reduction in real estate for the plant, elimination of diluent evaporation, containment of noxious vapors and reduced crud formation. In addition to the description of operation, the paper presents the findings of laboratory tests of pulsed columns extracting copper from pregnant leach solutions and also delineates potential advantages of the pulsed column in copper solvent extraction.

"A mathematical model was developed to study the role of orifice shape in the detection of inclusions in LiMCA (Liquid Metal .cleanliness Analyzer) system. The fluid flow field within the ESZ was obtained by solving the Navier-Stokes equations. The trajectories of entrained particles were calculated using the equations for motion of particles. A numerical study of the effect of orifice shape on signal shape generated by inclusions passing through orifice showed that the signals in a parabolic orifice are gaussian in shape, while those in a cylindrical orifice are trapezoidal in shape. This signal shape difference needs to be taken into account when performing particle discrimination. Orifice shape influences also pass-through fraction of inclusions. Finally, a study of the orifice shape on critical conditioning currents suggested that as the polynominal coefficient of the parabolic orifice increases, the critical conditioning current, which is also the maximum operating current, decreases dramatically. These critical conditioning currents also increase as the fluid flow velocity within the ESZ increases. IntroductionThe presence of non-metallic inclusions in metals often leads to impaired mechanical properties such as a reduction in fatigue strength, and to processing problems such as tear-offs in deep drawing and increased breakage rates in wire drawing operations. Similarly, inclusions cause a variety of surface defects in rolled or extruded products.Prior to the development of the LiMCA system (1) at McGill University in the early 1980's, it was not possible to measure inclusions, in situ, in liquid metals. Compared with other techniques, such as sedimentation, filtration and metallography, which require considerable amounts of labor and time, the LiMCA method has the advantage of providing not only information on the volume concentration of inclusions, but also on the size distribution of inclusions immediately and quantitatively."

The Tyrone copper solution extraction and electrowinning plant was the first such facility built by Phelps Dodge Mining Company in 1984. Over the next 20 years, the aqueous flow rate capacity of the plant has been expanded from the original design of 12,000 gallons per minute (gpm) to 34,000 gpm to meet production goals in the face of declining copper grades in the leach solutions. The ability to process higher aqueous flow rates through existing equipment comes at the expense of increased organic loss through entrainment to raffinate. These losses of organic (diluent and extraction reagents) can account for up to 10 percent of the plant?s total operating costs. With the recent dramatic price increase of petroleum-based products, these operating costs due to losses are sure to increase. This paper will discuss recent improvements at the Tyrone SXEW plant that have resulted in a 40 percent reduction of organic losses. These improvements include picket fence modifications, new fence materials, organic recovery systems, and operational practices within the solution extraction process.
