The application of electric arc furnace smelting of lead, antimony, and tin bearing slag from a reverberatory furnace will be discussed. The selection procedure for the 4.0 MVA electric arc furnace in Indianapolis, Indiana is presented. The design criteria for the transformer, electrodes, refractories and associated equipment is presented. The operation of the furnace including chaJ:9ing, bullion tapping, slag tapping, ventilation, slag composition, metal recoveries, and toxic leach results of thra.1 away slag are discussed. Flow charts and the equipment specifications are given.

Characterization of solids containing cyanides is carried out according to recommendations and standard guidelines. Most of these procedures are based on the analysis of leachates collected either on site or after leaching in the laboratory of samples. Unfortunately, these sole results are often insufficient to identify the source of the pollution. To provide 'a more complete characterization of polluted solids, optical and electron microscopy, XRD, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and transmission infrared spectroscopy were combined to analyze leachates and raw or ground samples. This combination of techniques allows the determination of the kind of cyanoferrate complexes are present in the solid state, different from insoluble Prussian Blue, since they do not have the same extraction' behavior. The use of all these techniques to characterize solid samples combined ,to the usual analysis of solutions gives a better understanding of ' the cyanide behavior.

In the present study the open gradient magnetic separation' (OGMS) method has been used to beneficiate the -30 + 100 mesh fraction of two high volatile bituminous coals. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the magnetic separation for cleaning these coals is the subject of this paper. Coal petrography in combination with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffractometry (XRD) were used to characterize the magnetically separated coal fractions. These analyses revealed that the majority of the pyrite and non-pyrite minerals were concentrated in the positive magnetic susceptibility fractions. The bulk of the starting samples (-80 weight percent) were located in the negative magnetic susceptibility fractions and showed significant reductions in pyrite and non-pyritic minerals. The magnetic separation appears to effectively split the samples into relatively clean coal and refuse.

The ever increasing quantities of solid wastes generated by various industries are at the source of the growing need for proper waste disposal methods. Thermal treatment of combustible wastes is a proven technology which permits the reduction of hazardous material having to be landfilled. However, this method is not universally applicable to waste disposal. For example, the transferal of heavy toxic metals into the thermal remediation products is a major issue of public concern. This paper focuses on the analysis of morphology changes from solid sludge to ash which is a product of the sludge combustion. The morphological parameters analyzed were particle size and external surface. They were determined using Jeol 840 Super Probe. The experiments were conducted in a computer-controlled high-temperature combustion system consisting of the thermogravimetric furnace coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (TGA-FTIR). Sludge particles were made of complex fibers trapped in the aluminosilicate matrix. At low temperatures, up to 680 K, the solid residue looked similar to the initial sludge. Between 680 K and 1180 K the sludge underwent intensive burning and steadily changed into powdered ash. At the temperature of 1050 K the ash was composed of separate, flat flakes with sizes ranging from 5 to 20 um. At 1470 K the flakes aggregated into large particles. The surface observed at 1670 K was a mixture of mullite crystals. Such structure could result from the solidification of the ash material after its melting. Morphological changes influenced the distribution of metals in the solid residue. For example, Cr was concentrated in small aggregates. Such distribution should allow for recovery of valuable metals from the solid waste residue.

"The properties of Ni-Mn-Ga films such as chemical composition, crystal structure, microstructure and transformation temperature were investigated with respect to sputtering conditions in the present study. The Ni-Mn-Ga films were deposited on a polyvinyl alcohol substrate with a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus using the NisoMn2sGa2s and Nis2Mn:«1Ga24 targets. After separating from the substrates, the films were annealed at the temperature between 873 and 1273 K for 3.6 ks. The chemical composition of the films depended on the radiofrequency generating power, however, there was no dependence on the heat treatment temperature. Each deposited film had a columnar grain structure. After heat treatment, the width of columnar grains widened and then became indistinct with increasing heat treatment temperature. The Heusler type cubic crystal structure of the fi4n with heat treatment at 1073 K changed to the tetragonal one through the martensitic structural transformation during cooling. The martensitic structural transformation temperature increased with increasing nickel content of films, while the Curie temperature decreased. The film obtained at 200 W using the Nis2Mn24Ga24 target after heat treatment at 1073 K showed one-way shape memory effect through the reverse martensitic structural transformation during heating.IntroductionThe ternary intermetallic compound NiiMnGa has a Heusler-type crystal structure and is an intelligent material, which has a shape memory effect and a ferromagnetic property. The martensitic structural transformation occurs within the ferromagnetic temperature region. The cubic crystal structure of L21 at high temperature changes to a tetragonal one through the martehsitic structural transformation during cooling. The films of this compound can be applied for an actuator of micro-machines."

The neural networks modelling approach is one of the most elegant black-box type methods to model industrial processes. In this paper, this approach is applied to model the performance of the CEZ zinc electrowinning plant. The model that was built was found to exhibit an excellent predictive ability for voltage and current density. The model was also used to investigate the sensitivity of the process to various key variables such as temperature, current density, zinc and sulphuric acid concentration, etc. Optimal regimes for zinc production were identified from the power consumption standpoint.

"The formation of titanium carbide during hot filament assisted carburizing of NiTi alloy was investigated. Phase content and morphology of the diffusion zone were examined by X-ray diffraction, X-ray microanalysis, SEM, and Auger electron spectroscopy. The growth of stable and adherent TiC film was observed. A non-planarity of interphase boundary was noticed. The applicability of the chemical diffusion approach to the analysis of the experimentally observed interface instability is discussed. A criterion, taking into account the influence of growth stresses on the stability of the flat interface, is developed by means of linear perturbation analysis.Introduction.Equiatomic intermetallic NiTi belongs to a class of materials exhibiting the shape-memory effect. The unusual property of this compound promotes its application in many fields, from aerospace technologies to medicine. The relatively high ductility ofNiTi also permits its use as a matrix material in metal-ceramic composites. The objective of this work was to investigate the possible incorporation of a ceramic material (titanium carbide) into NiTi by gas carburizing.Free energy calculations indicate the potential to obtain TiC by carburizing Ni-Ti binary phases. The main obstacle to such a process is the high affinity of titanium to oxygen. At moderate temperatures the formation of TiC is preferable to titanium oxidation only if the partial pressure of oxygen is extremely low [1]. This problem was overcome in this work by the use of hot filament assisted gas carburizing. Due to chemical reactions occurring near the hot filament, the gas mixture, initially consisting of methane and molecular hydrogen, was enriched by atomic hydrogen [2], drastically decreasing the content of free oxygen in the carburizing atmosphere.The second part of this article concerns the theoretical analysis of reasons that lead to the development of the experimentally observed morphology of the diffusion zone. In particular, the influence of the growth stresses on the morphology of an interphase boundary is investigated."

A wide variety of plants are able to extract nickel (Ni) from soils and accumulate this metal in their foliage. Hydrometallurgical processes have been developed to recover Ni in the form of metal or salts, starting from the plant A. murale. They include: (1) a combustion step, to obtain ash containing 15–20% Ni; (2) a leaching step; and (3) purification. That whole flowsheet has been thoroughly investigated, and the processes scaled up to the pilot scale. Another strategy is presented here, consisting of recovering Ni without burning the plant. Ni can be extracted from the dry plant by water leaching, but the leachate is a multi-element solution from which Ni has to be separated. Selective precipitation of Ni hydroxide is not possible since Ni is bound to organic ligands. In this work, the plant leachate is processed by adsorption on the chelating resin DOWEXTM M4195. The results showed that Ni was selectively retained whereas the other main cations were not. Nickel could be recovered at the elution step. This methodology needs to be further investigated but these initial results are very encouraging and open the possibility of Ni recovery by agromining.

In this work, we have elucidated the two-step oxidative reaction mechanism of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol by adsorbing oxygen atom for oxidative decomposition reaction of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol on oxide catalyst surface using ab initio molecular orbital calculation. In the first oxidation, total energies of reaction products have been shown extremely stabilized at all oxidation positions. This reaction occurs due to charge transfer from benzene ring to adsorbing oxygen atom. As a result, 1£ bonding of benzene ring are weakened. However, the benzene ring of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol does not perform cleavage reaction. In the second oxidation, the benzene ring of2,4,5-trichlorophenol can perform cleavage reaction, since the second oxidation obtains larger stabilized energies than the first oxidation.

"The surface tension represents an important property for the modelling of high temperature processes. In this study the surface tension of two Al2O3 – CaO – SiO2 model slags and the influence of the admixture of 5 up to 30 wt.% FeO were studied. The surface tension measurements were carried out using the sessile drop technique on BN substrates under Ar atmosphere (10-6 atm O2) up to 1500 °C.IntroductionThe aim of VIRTUHCON1 is the virtualization of high temperature conversion processes, a task that requires thorough understanding of these processes. In many of these conversion processes slag plays an important role to control the properties of the product, to protect the reactor lining or simply as waste. Slag surface tension is one of the materials properties that is needed for the description of such processes, since it influences the interactions between the components in the reactor, e.g. at the slag – Fe interface in the blast furnace.Surface and interfacial tensions have thus received considerable attention in research, but the number of investigations in this particular pseudo-quaternary system is surprisingly low. Furthermore, the literature data are subject to different measurement conditions and techniques which complicates the data analysis and comparison.The slag atlas [1] offers a compilation of the available literature until 1986 (shown in Table I), but literature search has not revealed more recent studies of this system until now. For example, Elliott and Mounier [2] determined the surface tension of ACSF slags using the double tube maximum bubble pressure technique at 1200 °C. They kept their slags in contact with Cu-S-F mattes, and the slag therefore contained a certain amount of sulphur which acts as a surfactant and lowers the surface tension. The compositions of their slags were scattered over a wide composition range and they did not use a common ACS base mixture for their tests, either. The surface tension values vary between 417 and 446 mN/m, but due to the reasons just mentioned no trend in the measurements can be observed and the influence of FeO admixture on the surface tension cannot be deduced. Further information including the temperature dependence is available from Pavlov et al. [3], Ishchanov and Shushkov [4] and Murav’eva and Kaplun [5]; the diagram on page 446 in Ref. [1] has been drawn from these sources. Both positive and negative temperature coefficients are reported in these works. SiO2 is the only pure constituent that has a positive temperature coefficient [6], but a correlation of the temperature coefficient with the SiO2 content was not found to be conclusive."

Heap leaching with thiosulfate is only used in one location for the treatment of a refractory preg-robbing gold ore initially pre-treated with bio-oxidation. The chemistry of thiosulfate leaching is complex. Further work is required to develop a better control of the system. A mild refractory gold ore containing pyrite and chalcopyrite was used in this study to investigate the use of thiosulfate as an alternative heap leaching technology. Preliminary bottle rolls tests indicated that similar gold extraction was obtained with cyanide and thiosulfate. In the column leach test, effects of thiosulfate, copper and ammonia concentrations, and their ratio on both gold extraction and reagent consumption, were assessed. The range of reagent concentration were: 0.1 - 1.0M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03 - 0.10M CuSO4*5H2O, 1.0 - 6.0M NH4OH. The solid-liquid ratio was in the range of 0.83:1 to 5: 1. Best results showed that 72% of gold was extracted in 50 days with 0.3M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.05M CuSO4*5H2O and 6M NH4OH or a combination of 1.0M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03M CuSO4*5H2O and 3M NH4OH. The reagent consumption at solid/liquid ratio of 3:1 was 37 - 48.6 kg/t (NH4)2S2O3 and 0 - 0.62 kg/t CuSO4*5H2O. The results of thiosulfate leaching were also compared with cyanide leaching.

Kosaka Smelter & Refinery has a history of more than a century as a metallurgical department belonging to Kosaka mine. It has treated for a long time the "Black Ore" or the complicated concentrates dressed from it. The "Black Ore" is composed of black sulfides. It contains not only valuable metals such as gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc but also some impurities like arsenic, antimony and bismuth. With the development of Kosaka's floatation technology, five kinds of concentrates (copper, zinc, lead, pyrite and barite) have been separated from the "Black Ore" but the separation was not complete and each concentrate contained some unfavorable impuritie. In 1980s the highly appreciated yen and the drop of the metals priees forced many domestic mines to close their operations. Since then Kosaka Smelter has changed its way of operation to a custom smelter. Now more than 95% of copper concentrates are imported to take advantage of this technology of "Black Ore" treatment. It mainly treats the raw materials that contain high gold and silver like the "Black Ore". Recently, Kosaka has been working on the recycling of the metals from the printed circuit board scraps and sludge which contain some precious metals. The volume of the recycled metal is continuously increasing.

A new technique for the removal of tramp-elements from steel scrap has been required from the viewpoint of saving energy and protection of environment. In order to obtain fundamental information on the removal of copper, tin and zinc from molten iron, the extraction method by using of phase separation in the liquid Fe-Pb-C system was investigated at 1453K. A mixture of iron, lead and carbon melted in a carbon crucible separates into two phases of lead and iron containing carbon. The compositions on the miscibility gap in the Fe-Pb-C system are 95.4%Fe-4.5%C-0.1 %Pb and 99.9%Pb-0.I%Fe. The distribution ratios of copper, tin and zinc between the lead and the iron phases, Lx [mass%X in molten Pb]/(mass%X in molten Fe), are 2.2, 2.2 and 1.4, respectively. Seventy percent of copper and tin from iron scrap can be eliminated with comparable lead addition. Gold, silver and palladium are enriched in the lead rich phase, on the contrary platinum and rhodium are more distributed to the iron rich phase than to the lead phase.

Certain radionuclide ions (e.g., TcO4) exhibit unusually strong Affinities toward the polymer-rich phase in aqueous biphase systems generated by combinations of salt solutions with polymers such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(propylene glycol) (PPG). Thus, aqueous. polymer ,phases could potentially be used to selectively extract these ions during pretreatment of radioactive tank wastes at Hanford. To help develop a fundamental understanding of the interactions between various ions and polymers in aqueous solution, interaction enthalpies between sodium -perrhenate and a random copolymer of PEG and PPG (UCON-50) were measured by microcalorimetric titration. An entropy compensation effect was observed in this system in which changes in enthalpic interactions were balanced by entropy changes such that the interaction free energy remained constant and approximately equal to zero.

"In the Sukinda Valley of Orissa, India, the total quantity of nickel ore reserves comprising of both lateritic and chromite over burden(COB) have been estimated at around 231 million tonnes containing 0.3 to 0.9% Ni. While mining of one tonne of Chromite ore, around 6-7 tonnes of chromite over burden are removed. These overburden materials are disposed as waste materials, which causes lot of environmental hazards and ecological imbalance. India imports a large amount of nickel and ferro-nickel to meet its growing demands in various sectors. For import substitutions, efforts have been made to produced ferro-nickel from the lean deposits of nickel bearing lateritic ores/ chromite over burden materials by reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation and then the nickel rich magnetic fraction is smelted to produce ferro-nickel. It has been possible to produce ferro-nickel of grade varying from 4-25% nickel.IntroductionDuring mining of chromite ore, large quantities of overburden materials are being generated. The materials amount to approximately 10 million tones per year contain around 0.3-0.9% Ni, 0.02-0.06% Co, 20-50% Fe and 4-9% Cr2O3 depending upon the location and the depth of the mine. These materials presently do not find any application for the extraction of nickel due to lack of a suitable technology. The materials are also unsuitable for ferro-nickel making because of their very high iron to nickel ratio. The country is seriously looking for a suitable technology to utilize these resources as its entire domestic requirements of nickel is met though imports. In this connection, a systematic approach has been made at the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar to develop a process for ferro-nickel making from this indigenous resource."

The electric arc furnace process is a common method to produce high TiO2 slag from ilmenite. The pre-reduction process was proposed in recent years in order to reduce electricity consumption. In order to enhance the pre-reduction degree, high energy ball milling was proposed to improve the specific surface area of the ilmenite prior to reduction. In this study, the carbothermic reduction behavior of milled ilmenite concentrate was investigated. It was found that the ball milling method can result in a higher reduction rate and improved metallization of iron. The metallization of iron increased with increasing the time of ball milling. The metallization of iron with milling reached 89.49% when the time of ball milling was 70 min., while the FeO content decreased with 70 min. of milling from 11.84% to 4.76%.

"Codelco-Chile in the last decade has carried out industrially-oriented research as an alternative to the traditional batch-type converting process. In a first stage carried out preliminary evaluations in a rearranged Peirce Smith (PS) converter, and then an exploratory test in a “Convertidor Teniente” (Teniente converter, TC) for the Codelco-Chile Continuous Converting Process. However, the validation test for this process in the TC was delayed up to the second quarter of 2007 where the validation studies were done satisfactorily.Thus, the objective of this paper is to present the results of the campaign tests validating the Codelco-Chile Continuous Converting Process in the TC1 of the Codelco Norte smelter.The results of charging the solid or liquid matte or high grade matte (“white metal”) by Garrgun, or by mouth of the 22 m x 5 m TC1 are presented. Some features of the industrially validated process are discussed, and the pilot test results of the matte injection are also presented."

The essential features of an image analysis system for the measurement of mineral liberation are described. Good procedures for image acquisition and image processing prior to image analysis are defined. The basic stereological methods for the measurement of volume fraction, surface area per unit volume, particle size distribution and liberation spectra are given. The appropriate methods for fractal correction when measuring perimeters of irregular features and for frame correction when measuring linear intercepts are developed. Practically useful and accurate procedures for the stereological correction of particle size and liberation distribution methods are given.

A novel technology characterized by higher extraction of vanadium and recovery of valuable elements was developed to recover vanadium from stone coal. The brief flow of the novel technology mainly includes low temperature sulphation roasting, water leaching, recovering potassium, aluminum, copper and selenium, solvent extraction enrichment vanadium, precipitation of red vanadium, removal sodium from red vanadium and calcinations. The total recovery of vanadium reached 76.3%, which was higher than the current applied technology. The novel technology was environmentally-friendly and could extract vanadium from the stone coal, in which the content of V2O5 was less than 0.8%.
