As hydrometallurgy matures as a technology, more of its existing process knowledge will continue to be summarized in the form of detailed mathematical models. This development is happening at a time when major improvements in computer hardware have reduced the cost of computing. The opportunity then exists, through the solution of these process models, to design, control, and optimize hydrometallurgical plants on the basis of the physics and chemistry of its processes and less on empiricism. In this paper, a review of the current capabilities of sensors and phenomenological models for selected hydrometallurgical processes is presented. Future trends, in terms of the control and optimization of hydrometallurgical plants, are then explored. The possibility of simultaneously optimizing plant design and associated process control system performance is discussed.

Presented is a method of continuously producing very narrowly sized particle streams. Currently Sieve Cascadography is a batch method of analyzing particle shape - a form of particle chromatography. This paper introduces and analyzes the continuous Sieve Cascadograph, a device that enables a series of narrowly sized particle fractions to be produced continuously. Properly designed, the continuous Sieve Cascadograph will produce many product streams of particles with as little as one percent difference in particle size within a given size fraction - an order of magnitude better than existing technology permits. By varying operating conditions, the size of the output fractions may be varied.

A chartered bus with about 30 attendees of the just completed 1998 SME Annual Meeting headed toward Green Cove Springs, FL, which the author had been told was located somewhere south of Jacksonville, FL. In conjunction with the meeting in Orlando, RGC (USA) Mineral Sands provided a tour of its facility. The author had worked with heavy minerals on a laboratory scale, performing the usual gravity and magnetic separations, but had never been to a heavy mineral mine and processing facility. Years ago as a metallurgist, the author once applied for a job in a heavy mineral operation in Florida -it may have been the same operation. After turning north on to Highway 95, the endless billboards promoting beach-front retirement communities proved the Atlantic ocean was just a few miles away (although the author never caught a glimpse of it). After another hour, the bus suddenly turned west and continued inland for about 65 km (40 miles). The thought occurred, "We are talking about beach sands, what are we doing heading away from the ocean?" As the bus continued inland, the author was struck by the flatness of the land and by the lakes, rivers and wetlands. He was also impressed by the many fine stands of pine and hardwoods. The office of RGC (USA) Mineral Sands is located about 16 km (10 miles) south of Green Cove Springs. Upon leaving the bus, members of the tour were greeted by Graeme Sloan, general manager, and Elliot Mallard, manager of mining. They provided some general information about the operation, including a slide show. RGC's Florida operation produces four concentrates: zircon (ZrSiO,), rutile (TiO,), ilmenite (FeTiO,) and leucoxene (an alteration product of ilmenite containing 67% to 70% TiO,). With a work force of about 170, the annual production of the above products is about 23,27, 45 and 14 kt (25,000 30,000 50,000 and 15,000 st), respectively. RGC also has other mineral sand operations, in addition to gold and base metal mines, mostly in Australia.

Computers have been used in the minerals industry for about 30 years and, in a few cases, longer. With the explosion of microcomputing during the past 10 years, computers have changed how many minerals producers go about their work. What computer usage trends are active in the minerals industry today, and what can we expect in the future? In general, computer usage is accelerating. Engineers and geologists are becoming increasingly "application literate." Soft¬ware is increasingly oriented to how people work. User interfaces have improved, so most users need to know only a mini¬mum of system commands and structure to work with a computer. Most industry professionals know how to use word processing and spreadsheet pro¬grams. AutoCAD appears to be the drawing program of choice. One reason is availability of training and add-on programs for earthwork, mapping, contouring, etc. Another frequently cited reason for using CAD is the ability to quickly make changes to a map or design, as compared to hand methods. Management is moving toward greater acceptance of computer usage. Computers do not need workman's compensation ... even though they may get sick and take a few days off! Computer hardware used in most minerals-producing companies is strongly personal-computer based and likely to remain so. The 486 personal computers are inexpensive as compared to workstations and provide the power and speed to run most applications in minerals industry engineering offices.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has undertaken a $1.2 billion effort to capture and treat combined sewage overflows from various outfalls along the Detroit and Rouge Rivers in Detroit, Michigan. This program is planned to include a 455,000 m3 (120 million gallon) storage and treatment tunnel which will capture overflows from 19 outfalls along the Rouge River. The tunnel is currently in the conceptual design phase, with the bid date planned for mid-year in 2001,and completion planned for August 2005. The total design and construction cost is currently estimated to be approximately $450 million. Current concepts are for the storage and transport tunnel will be 6.1 m (20feet) in finished diameter, with a total alignment length of approximately 12,200 m(40,000 feet). The main tunnel will extend through the Traverse and Antrim Shalerock formations, while approximately 5,500 m (18,000 feet) of various diameter connecting tunnel will extend through both rock and soft ground. The project will include a total of 10 drop shafts, 13 riser shafts, various connecting structures, and a 455,000 m3/day (20 mgd) pumping station. This paper will present a discussion of the design philosophy, subsurface conditions, the various planned components, and the expected design and construction considerations for the proposed Upper Rouge Combined Sewage Overflow Tunnel.

Flotation processes contain disturbances which make material balance closures difficult to achieve. Lack of closure also arises from instrument errors. A portion of these problems can be overcome by proper equipment selection; the primary measurement installation and methods of initial data filtering are discussed below. The problem of data adjustment has been considered before (2). The technique described here is essentially that of Ripps (2). The technique was expanded to include linearization of non-linear material balance equations. An additional large error detection portion was also added to Ripp's formulation. Ripp's technique is based on a Lagrange-Multiplier optimization method. The Lagrange-Multiplier technique is generally applied when there are equality constraints on the variables. Steady-state material balance equations fit in this category. The basic Lagrange-Multiplier method is described. It is followed by a description of the modified material balance data adjustment technique. An example is presented to illustrate the use of this method.

The hydrodynamics of the leaching solution in leach heaps is known to be one of the important variables in the performance of the heap. The solution hydrodynamics are also important in the decommissioning of a heap where the aim is to flush out the residual dissolved metals and the remaining reagents. Chemical engineers have studied the hydrodynamics of "trickle bed" reactors for 40 years in an attempt to relate the performance of trickle bed reactors to flow conditions. Their work is reviewed with emphases on areas of similarity to heap leaching.

In the garden of national problems recognized by the American public, imports of mineral products is a hardy perennial. Concern for the security of mineral supplies has preoccupied nations since the industrial revolution and the mechanization of warfare. Since 1973, Americans have also been sensitized to the potential economic costs of overseas mineral supply disruptions and the cartelization of foreign production. Though oil prices have plunged since 1981, the import dependency issue remains topical. Political turmoil in Southern Africa reminds us that mineral supply disruptions will occur in the future as they have in the past. Producers of iron and steel, copper, and refined petroleum products seek protection from imports on national security grounds. The Reagan administration is proposing sweeping changes in the management of the federal mineral stockpiles. s an enduring need to take stock of the mineral trade position of the United States. This article considers the changing role that the U.S. has played in the twentieth century in non-fuel minerals trade. We begin by enunciating some principles that are useful in analyzing this trade. The changing pattern of trade in the 1900-1969 period is then reviewed. There follows a more detailed analysis of mineral trade trends in the 1970-84 period. Some consideration is given in the final section to the significance of non-fuel mineral trade for the U.S. economy. THE ECONOMICS OF U.S. MINERAL TRADE The allocation of non-fuel mineral products in the United States has in this century been accomplished primarily through the market mechanism. Except where trade barriers have distorted price signals, this means that mineral supplies have been obtained from the least cost source, with little regard for their country of origin. Mineral prices facing U.S. firms are sensitive to shifts in the domestic supply and demand, but are also sensitive to economic conditions overseas. The balance of trade in each mineral product has depended on the amount that is profitably produced and consumed domestically at the world price. The nation has produced exactly as much as it has consumed only by chance. U.S. demand for non-fuel minerals is derived from the demand for manufactures, farm commodities, and other goods whose production requires mineral products as inputs. The demand for such goods can be quite volatile, and in most industries moves cyclically due to its sensitivity to the level of aggregate economic activity. The supply of mineral products depends on the cost of extracting and processing mineral raw materials. These costs do not vary greatly in the short run. Because of these attributes of mineral markets, U. S. trade in mineral products fluctuates considerably from year to year. Most of this volatility results from shifts in domestic and overseas demand and from changes in exchange rates and trade barriers. Longer run changes in the mineral trade pattern can also be discerned. These depend on secular trends in demand and in the cost of mineral extraction and processing at home and overseas. The United States was originally endowed with extensive reserves of an array of mineral-rich ores and fossil fuels. It is also a nation with an entrepreneurial climate and technological capability conducive to extracting and processing those reserves. Not surprisingly, it has at one time or another ranked among the world's leading producers of a great many mineral products. With a population that is large and an economy that is technologically advanced by world standards, the U.S. has also been a leading consumer of mineral products. Because of its voracious appetite, the bulk of mineral products produced domestically has traditionally been consumed domestically as well. Net exports have been sizable only in those industries in which the nation has enjoyed an extraordinary cost advantage. Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide were two of the early forms of man-made abrasives often referred to as synthetic and were invented at the turn of the century. Edward G. Acheson invented Silicon Carbide in 1893 and Charles F. Jacobs filed a patent for the manufacture of fused alumina from bauxite in 1900. Jacobs' patent provided a method for tempering the alumina by reduction and fusion to a degree of hardness and toughness suitable for abrasive purposes. These two inventions are the basis of the synthetic abrasive industry today. Improvements have been made in the equipment used in the process, however the process itself remains basically the same. In 1904 A. C. Higgins observed that hot spots developed on the shell of the pot furnace used in the reduction of bauxite. He found that by spraying water on the hot spots they could be prevented and, in addition, they failed to return in the same place. Higgins reasoned that the cooling effect of the water caused the melt contacting the metal shell to freeze as an insulating autogenous refractory. This suggested that an improved furnace design could be obtained by using a metal shell which is continuously flooded with water on the exterior surface. Paradoxically, a furnace required to contain tons of molten Aluminun Oxide was thus constructed of nothing but a sheet steel shell with no refractory lining at all. A test of such an arrangement was tried by Higgins with considerable trepidation and was found to be extremely satisfactory.

During the past decade, since the appearance of Popoff's (1966) review of grade tonnage calculations, it has become evident that defining a new method which could be followed step by step by a technician and which would improve reserve estimation was not a simple thing to do. Some concepts have emerged though, and most definitions of ore reserve now require a statement of reliability (USGS, 1975; and Zwarten-dyke, 1976). Exactly how the reliability should be computed is not a straightforward process. It also became apparent that not only was reliability a requirement but that additional questions such as how to predict mining re- serves from geological reserves were to be asked. In fact what became obvious is that specific models have to be designed for each type of mine and for each type of question which is asked. Most methods can be encased within a unique general geostatistical, model, but it takes considerable custom tailoring, and there are still questions that are left unanswered. In this chapter, before giving techniques, we intend to first review what should be required from a grade tonnage calculation done at the exploration stage. If the final objective is still to specify a tonnage and grade, with eventually a reliability, many qualifications have to be made before quoting, and of course, calculating these two numbers. Then the currently avail- able methods will be reviewed and future trends will be shown; finally a few case studies will be given and recommendations about the choice of a model will be made.

Computer technology in the mining activities of our company has been applied in the last decade. In this presentation the experience gained by applying this computer technology in mining spescific applications are reported. Attention is given to the problems phased out and to the methodology used for software selection, centralized and decentralized development, data processing personnel and end users training and support. The paper concludes with a report of the first results obtained and a look at the future developments of the system.

The concept and operation of novel shaft sinking systems utilizing roadheader-type cutter booms, including mucking, conveying, and hoisting installations, are described. Selection criteria, performance data, and economic considerations for various shaft excavators are presented. Various applications of this low-cost and flexible system for civil engineering and mining projects will be discussed. The cutter booms can work in both soft ground and competent rock. Furthermore, the novel excavator can operate in ground stabilized by grouting, cementing, and freezing. The flexible cutting system can be used both for excavation of shafts, foundation pits, slopes, and for tunneling (drifting).

About 100 mine-waste dumps from past metal exploration and mining in Colorado and Montana were sampled using surficial-sampling methods for laboratory studies of the minus-2-mm fraction. In the laboratory, the composite samples were split into l00g samples that were leached to assess their acid-generation potential and associated release of potentially toxic metals that may degrade water quality in the headwaters of the Animas River watershed in Colorado and the Boulder River watershed in Montana. Two leach methods were studied: a passive leach using de-ionized water, and a more aggressive leach following the EPA-1312 method. The resulting pH values of the leachates using both methods are comparable. The concentrations of sulfate and several, but not all, dissolved or water-soluble metals are higher in the EPA-1312 leachates than in the passive leachates; however, the overall trends of the data are very similar. The passive leach method is less labor intensive and may be more representative of the natural weathering process occurring on the mine-waste dumps, simulating the natural precipitation and snowmelt. Three chemical characteristics of mine wastes studied here provide a relative ranking of mine-waste dumps for the purpose of determining priority for removal or remediation. These characteristics are: net acid production (NAP), sum of dissolved toxic metals (?As+Cd+Cu+Pb+Zn), and dissolved iron in leachates. Ranking can be done evaluating plots of NAP versus the sum of dissolved toxic metals, and NAP versus dissolved iron. These two plots serve as a basis for relative ranking of polymetallic-vein and acid-sulfate mine wastes studied. This ranking scheme may apply to mine wastes from production of other deposit types in other watersheds.

Modern mine ventilation systems have grown rapidly in recent years both in terms of complexity and value for human health and safety. Although computer models are now available to help the design and operation of mine ventilation systems, considerable differences often exist between the computer-based predictions and practical results. Research conducted to compare computer results with practical measurements made in ventilation circuits simulated in a physical model seems to confirm such differences. It is concluded that although a mine ventilation computer model is a very powerful tool, it can be utilized to its full potential only if reliable input data are provided.

The Gulf Coast Region has been the center of extensive lignite exploration and development activity in the past 10 years. Currently, 27.2 Mt (30 million st) of lignite are mined annually, the majority of which is uncovered by large walking draglines. Projections indicate that production could reach 125 Mt (138 million st) by 1990. As mining moves to deeper depths, removal of overburden becomes the decisive factor in mine planning and cost. The geology of a region plays a key role in the selection of an overburden removal system. While alternate stripping methods must be analyzed to determine the most economical and operationally sound method, so far bucketwheel excavator systems seem to be the best method for removing large volumes of soft, unconsolidated material that is found at projected mining depths in the Gulf Coast region. Geology of Gulf Coast Lignites Extent Distribution of the principal tertiary lignite-bearing deposits in the Gulf Coast Lignite province extend from the Texas-Mexico border to the Alabama-Georgia state line (Fig. 1). The lignite-bearing strata includes portions of eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lignites occur primarily in the Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson groups in the Gulf Coast. The uppermost strata of the Midway group in Mississippi and Alabama also contain significant lignite resources. Reserves Commercial lignite seams in the Gulf Coast Lignite province range from 0.6-3 m (2-10 ft) in thickness. The estimated lignite resources throughout the Gulf Coast in seams greater than 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and up to 61 m (200 ft) in depth currently are estimated at 32 Gt (35 billion st). Table 1 shows these resources by state. Quality Lignite quality can vary within individual mining areas and seams. However, trends in quality occur because of the depositional environment, age, and west-to-east geographical location. Better quality lignites occur in the Wilcox group in Texas and Louisiana. Poorer quality lignites occur in the northern regions of the Wilcox group and those of the geologically younger Claiborne and Jackson groups. Environmental Conditions Gulf Coast province environmental conditions are ideal for successful mine reclamation. The lignite occurs in flat to moderately rolling terrain, a topography easily reproduced from the spoil dumps or spoil rows developed during the mining operation. High to moderate rainfall facilitates rapid revegetation. Evidence from current mine reclamation programs and ongoing test plot studies indicate that mined lands can be reclaimed to reach premining productivities. Sometimes productivities are even greater than that of premining conditions. The objective of this study is to develop a better understanding of the collection characteristics of dust measurement instruments used in mine dust control research with respect to properties of quartz and coal dust. Coal and quartz dust of narrow sues, with aerodynamic median diameters being approximately 2 µm, 4 µm and 10 µm, with quartz contents of l0%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%, were released in an aerosol characterization chamber using a fluidized bed aerosol generator. Dust was collected in MSA personal gravimetric samplers with l0-mm nylon cyclones, total dust samplers and Sierra 298 inertial cascade impactors. The samples were analyzed for mass and quartz content. A total of 21 experiments were performed for this study. The mass and quartz collection efficiencies of the total and respirable dust samplers and the impactor were determined. The data show that the amount of dust collected by the respirable dust sampler (respirable + oversize dust trapped in the cyclone pre-classifier) was, in general, less than the amount collected by the total dust sampler. The amount of dust collected by the impactor was higher than that collected by the total dust sampler. Quartz analyses of the airborne dust samples showed that the total dust and respirable dust samplers (including oversize dust) collect less quartz dust than at inertial impactor. The larger the median particle sire of the quartz and coal mixture, the lower the quart content of the dust collected in the samplers. For all three sires, the impactor was a better collector of quartz than the other instruments.

The paper concerns the calculation of stresses and displacements in working area of room-and-pillar mining system of cooper ore mines. A three-dimensional rock mass model based on the finite element method has been developed. The complete strain-stress characteristic for pillars has been applied, but for the purpose of modeling the curve has been approximated by three segments of lines: - the first represents a behavior of pillar before a failure, -the second corresponds to a progressive pillar failure phase, - the third represents the part of the curve, where the increase of strains do not cause the stress changes, and it is called the residual strength. The criterion of model stability has been derived, which can be useful for predicting rockmass stability. The programs have been built, which allow to calculate stresses in bar elements, displacements in plate nodes, and estimate the stability of the model, which consists of plate elements and one-dimensional elements with a segment strain-stress characteristic. The programs were used to consider two different problems, which are connected with mining design and the exploitation systems.

Somebody sure gave me the wrong title. I can talk much more freely about the impact of the anti-nuclear movement on the DRILLING industry in New Mexico. In a word, it is being "clobbered." It doesn't seem like very long ago that my brothers and I were busy trying to find enough new equipment (and trying to talk bankers into lending us enough money) to keep up with drilling work we could get. Seemed like no matter how hard we worked, and how much money we borrowed, we were always one step behind where we wanted to be. We had so many holes to drill that all our crews were working three shifts a day, and over several states. The nation needed energy, and we were ready to help supply it. Exploration and development drilling jobs were all going full-blast. We had trouble keeping up with them. With luck, we figured we'd be able to get all our equipment out of hock before all the necessary uranium mines were developed.

INTRODUCTION Due to the current depressed state of the mining industry, many mining companies have been forced to operate at less than maximum capacity. This paper will describe how the AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill near Empire and Parshall, Colorado respectively have utilized operations scheduling and budgeting to achieve production targets at minimum operating costs The AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill have been operating most recently at approximately sixty percent of maximum capacity. OPERATIONS SCHEDULING Production Targets. The production targets are tons, operating days, tons per opera- ting day, head grade, recovery, and pounds of molybdenum. One specific objective of operations scheduling is to meet the production target for pounds of molybdenum. Present market conditions dictate that production be adjusted to match sales of molybdenum. Over-production and creation of molybdenum inventories is unacceptable. In summary, the product ion target for pounds of molybdenum must be met, but not exceeded. Capacity. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage open crushing circuit capacity is 48,000 dry short tons per day. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage semi-autogenous primary grinding mill circuit capacity is 38,000 dry short tons per day. All other AMAX Henderson Mi 11 circuits such as rougher flotation, regrind, cleaner flotation, lead leach, filtering, drying and concentrate handling are sized to accommodate the 38,000 dry short tons per day and pro- ducts from same. The tailing delivery system is designed to accommodate tailing from a 38,000 dry short tons per day operation. Constraints. One mill production scheduling constraint is that the mill operating schedule must be the same as mine production, ore haulage and crushing. There is a total crushed ore stockpi1e storage capacity of 240,000 dry short tons. This breaks down to 60,000 dry short tons of crushed ore over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. However, there is only approximately 10,000 dry short tons of live crushed ore available over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits.
