Alternative material handling methods are allowing material handling operations to be performed with increased cost savings. This allows for higher production levels with better returns. RAHCO International Inc.'s Continuous Mining Excavator (CME) has recently received a lot of attention due in part to its operating efficiency, flexibility, and associated low operating costs. The CME is designed to perform three primary functions. These include material excavation, sizing and loading operations. In many applications, a drilling and blasting process can be eliminated. The CME was developed originally in 1985 for open pit coal mining. See figure I. Since this time, it has been proven an effective system for excavating many other types of materials including friable and sticky materials. It has also been shown to suitably handle hard rock in certain site conditions.

Nonliving waste biomass consisting of Aspergillus niger attached to wheat bran was used as a biosorbent for the removal of copper and zinc from aqueous solutions. Copper and zinc uptake by the biomass obeyed Langmuir isotherms. The binding capacity of the biomass for copper was found to be higher than that for zinc. The metal uptake, expressed in milligrams per grain of biomass, was found to be a function of: •the initial metal concentration (with the uptake decreasing with increasing initial concentration), •the biomass loading (with the uptake decreasing with increasing biomass loading) and •pH (with the uptake increasing with increasing pH in the range of L5 and 6.0). The metal uptake was significantly affected in the presence of a co-ion. The uptake of copper by the biomass decreased in the presence of zinc and vice versa. The decrease in metal uptake was dependent on the concentrations of metals in the two-component aqueous solutions. The effect of copper on zinc uptake was more pronounced than the effect of zinc on copper uptake.

Polysaccharides have been widely used as depressants in mineral processing for decades. They constituent one of the most abundant family of biopolymers. However, only a small number of them have been used by industry so far because of a general lack of understanding of interactions between these polymers and minerals. In this work, adsorption tests, electrophoretic mobility measurements, microflotation and fluorescence spectroscopic tests were performed along with computer simulation to explore the mechanistic aspects of guar gum adsorption and conformation on talc as a function of relevant variables such as ionic strength, pH, solvent composition and polymer molecular weight. From microflotation tests, it was found that talc hydrophobicity decreased markedly due to the adsorption of guar gum even at very low concentrations and reached a plateau below moximum adsorption. Guar gum adsorption on talc was found to be not affected significantly by changes in solution conditions such as pH and ionic strength, ruling out electrostatic force as controlling factor for adsorption. Fluorescence spectroscopic studies showed no evidence of the formation of hydrophobic domains at talc-aqueous interface. Also urea, a hydrogen bond breaker, reduced the adsorption of guar on talc. All of the above results suggest that one of the main driving forces for guar adsorption on talc is hydrogen bonding in preference to electrostatic or hydrophobic force. This information should help toward designing reagents of optimum molecular architecture for efficient depression, dispersion or other such surface modification of particles.

A completed feasibility study executed by an independent agency can benefit a company in two ways. Inside the organization, it verifies the project staffs ideas and their concept of the facility. Outside the company, it can be utilized to obtain equity partners, debt financing, and other forms of credit. It is advisable to bring in a project execution contractor for the feasibility study. A project execution contractor is able to work with engineers to develop the project concept, process flowsheet, and best utilization of the site. By getting an early start on understanding a company's policies and working methods, a project execution contractor saves the company money since it does not have to go through the educational buildup twice. The contractor is a specialist in putting together a bankable document that can be taken to a financing source. It answers all the agency requirements on the first pass. In addition, the contractor can advise an owner on likely financing sources since he works on the worldwide market every day. A less obvious advantage of including the contractor in the study and predevelopment buildup stages is the importance of coordinating finance and technical input. The financing source influences equipment specifications, procurement, logistics, project schedule, cash flow, and liquidity. There are many surprises in store for any manager of a large international project involving worldwide financing and purchasing. The job does not have to be made more difficult by bringing in a contractor after all predevelopment steps are taken. The contractor can still work if the predevelopment steps have been done, even if he does not agree with them. But early contractor involvement is the preferable solution.

Inertization of coal dust with stone dust is a common control implemented within underground coal mines to mitigate the hazard of a coal dust explosion. To achieve adequate inertization, the total incombustible content (TIC) of the coal/stone dust mixture is required to meet certain percentages depending on the risk and relevant legislation. Current methods for determining the TIC of a mixture involves laboratory analysis, colorimetric comparison, or the use of portable instruments. This paper provides preliminary analysis of determination of a sample’s TIC in real-time with chemometric modelling, using portable instruments employing near-infrared (NIR).

The Atlanta Plane Train Tunnel West Extension was excavated at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport using Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM). At its shallowest point, tunnel cover to bottom of Domestic Terminal footings was limited to 6 feet in soft ground. To mitigate risk of excessive building movement due to tunneling-related activities, the columns near the alignment were directly underpinned. Underpinning was accomplished using a combination of grouted mini-piles, installed under low headroom conditions, that supported steel framing spanning over the tunnel excavations. This paper focuses on design and construction of the underpinning system used to mitigate risk from tunneling.

The Solution Mining review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Solution mining, in its broadest definition, includes all forms of leaching where a lixiviant solution is brought into contact with a metalliferous or non-metallic ore and the resulting pregnant solution is processed for recovery of the valuable soluble material. Technologies such as dump leaching, heap leaching, stope washing and in situ lixiviant solution injection and recovery fit into this definition of solution mining. A publication entitled the US Gold Industry (Dobra and Thomas) reflects the major impact that solution mining techniques have had on precious metal recovery. In 1989 (the last year for which statistics are available), the United States passed Australia to become the third largest gold producing country in the world after South Africa and the Soviet Union. It is estimated that when the final figures are in for 1990, the US will probably pass the Soviet Union in gold output. If the state of Nevada is ranked as a separate country, it will rank fourth in the world in gold production for 1990. A good proportion of this increase in gold production over the past few years can be attributed to the application of solution mining technology to low-grade, precious-metal-bearing material. Solution mining techniques have also made inroads in copper production. Many operations located at former underground mine sites employ in situ leaching as an adjunct to conventional dump and heap leaching practices.

The Gatineau shaft described in this paper was an excavation of about 38 m diameter and 21 m depth constructed in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River just north of Ottawa, Ontario. A large sewage lift pumping station-was to be constructed in this excavation. Subcontractor for the shaft excavation and initial support was Beaver Underground Structures Ltd., of Dorval, Quebec. Mr. William C. Cox of Beaver conceived the idea for the support system used in this excavation, and was responsible for the construction activities. Initial analysis and design concepts for the lining system were developed by Mr. Ronald E. Heuer. Detailed lining design and construction monitoring were the responsibility of Mr. Jean-Michel Loignon. Geologic conditions indicated by two borings within the shaft area are illustrated in Fig. 1. The shaft excavation would be in the sensitive Leda silty clay. The clay is of stiff to very stiff consistency, with an insitu vane shear strength averaging about 115 KPa (2400 psf) and a reported low value of about 87 KPa (1820 psf). Low strength values were from the middle of the clay layer, with higher strengths at the top and bottom. Average shear strength at the level of the base of the excavation was about 137 KPa (2860 psf). Remolded vane shear strength averaged about 20 KPa (420 psf), with a reported low of 13 KPa (270 psf). Based upon average strength values, the clay sensitivity is 5.8. The clay has an average water content of 53% (range 43 to 66%), which is near its liquid limit (average 56%). The clay unit weight is about 1760 kg/m3 (110 pcf). Underlying the shaft site at shallow depth is limestone bedrock within which the piezometric head is approximately equal to the original ground surface elevation. For shaft support, a -cast-in-place concrete wafer system was considered, but was discarded because of time restrictions imposed by concrete placement and curing. Mineral property appraisers engaged in eminent domain actions on properties for which mining is the highest and best use must be fully competent in all phases of mineral resource estimation, mine project development, and mine operations (or retain the requisite competent assistance), as well as educated in eminent domain appraisal (USPAP Competency Rule). Failure to ensure such triggers the issue of appraisal competence and demonstrates a flagrant disregard of the myriad code(s) and guidelines to which the appraiser is subject. The cavalier assertion of some vague, undefined “latitude” in the valuation process does not exonerate the appraiser from a disregard of the USPAP Competency Rule. Lack of independence (i.e., “advocacy”) in mineral property appraisal is the usual result of a weak background in mining and/or appraisal theory. While it is readily apparent to those able to recognize it in reports and testimony, judges and juries cannot be expected to detect or recognize purposefully misleading (or even fraudulent) valuation concepts or testimony. Purposeful deception by the appraiser can lead to specious over-compensation of the property owner (thus victimizing the taxpayer); or, a failure to provide appropriate and just compensation to the property owner – yet, the purpose of an eminent domain proceeding is to leave the property owner no richer or poorer as a result of the taking. This paper highlights some of the deceptive practices encountered in litigation settings and raises issues of competency, professional ethics, and the effectiveness of the inherent enforcement capabilities within those institutions awarding professional certifications. INTRODUCTION The practice of eminent domain mineral property appraisal requires (particularly with respect to undeveloped mineral properties) that the appraiser possess the requisite level of competence in all phases of mineral resource estimation, mine project evaluation, mine development, and mine operation (through closure). To the extent the appraiser lacks such competence, it is incumbent on the appraiser not only to divulge this lack of expertise but also to seek competent assistance in the performance of the appraisal. This competence or expertise can only be obtained through a combination of appropriate and relevant technical education and direct mining industry experience. There exist a number of professional certification and/or credentialing authorities that speak to such competency. In a similar manner, eminent domain mineral property appraisal (as the term implies) also requires that the appraiser possess the requisite level of competence in the practice of eminent domain appraisal. This competence or expertise can only be obtained through appropriate and relevant education, direct knowledge of appraisal theory, particularly as it relates to the concept of eminent domain, and licensure.

Researchers are exploring the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to measure concentrations of gas emissions in situations where such measurements are otherwise extremely difficult to obtain, such as NO and NO2 (NOx) emissions from surface mine blasting. Recently, countries have imposed or are planning to impose surface blasting gas pollution regulations, which creates a need for an improved understanding of UAV-based gas measuring systems. The experiments detailed in this paper were performed to determine if airflow generated by the rotors, also known as downwash, unnaturally alters concentration measurements. Downwash turbulence could create locations of varying pressure, which could affect density-based concentrations as measured by some governing entities, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Demand by precious metals explorationists for cost effective means to target subsurface geologic structures worthy of evaluation by means of drilling has led to the use of the predictor-correlator technique. To locate polarizable targets, the predictor-a localized inhomogeneity in electrical properties-is placed at various locations in the computer-simulated subsurface region, and correlated with the potential distribution observed in the field. The correlation coefficient obtained is assigned to the subsurface location. IP targets are extracted by calculating a second correlation section based on higher-frequency illumination and subtracting it from the first. The locations of correlation difference correspond to the locations of polarizable mineralization.

This paper is concerned primarily with the kaolin deposits extending northwestward from Macon, Ga., which is in the western part of the Irwinton district (fig. 1). These deposits are in a belt of kaolin districts extending along the inner edge of the Coastal Plain from the Aiken district, S. C., southwestward to the vicinity of Macon, a distance of 150 miles (250 km). Large kaolin deposits associated with bauxite also occur in an extension of this belt southwestward from Macon as far as the Eufaula district, Ala., a distance of about 130 miles (208 km). The belt splits away from the inner edge of the Coastal Plain in a southwesterly direction from Macon; the Eufaula district is approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of the contact of Coastal Plain sedimentary rocks with much older crystalline rocks. Structure The strata of Cretaceous and Tertiary age containing the kaolin deposits all dip gently seaward irom the landward edge of the sedimentary rocks. The dip of the Cretaceous strata is about 25 feet per mile (4.9 m per km). The dip of Tertiary strata is about 15 feet per mile (2.1 m per km). In places, the Tertiary strata overlap the older sedimentary beds and rest directly on the crystalline rocks. Faults having a few feet of displacement have been observed in several mines, but no major faulting is known in the area.

Introduction Millions of tons of coal are shipped by rail each year in the US. Loading those trains efficiently is a topic being studied by coal producers and railroads. Alternatives range from volumetric loadouts to systems that weigh the product, using either belt conveyor scales, track scales, or weighbins. Each system has its proper application and each has pros and cons, depending on the volume, nature, and layout of the specific loading facility. In recent years, a batch weighing system has been developed that offers significant benefits to higher volume operations shipping by a unit train. The Unitrain Loadout System (ULS) features a precision electronic batch weighing system married to a mechanical loadout system by a microprocessor-based digital control system. A batch weighing loadout could be designed using analog electronics or even a mechanical weighbin. But it is the adaption and use of a microprocessor that provides the primary benefits of a unit train loading facility. Those benefits are accurate weight determination, optimum car use, overload prevention, speed in loading, optimum labor use, and documentation of the loading process. Unitrain History The first ULS was erected for iron ore applications in Canada during the 1960s. The first domestic system on coal was installed at Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co.'s McKinley mine at Gallup, NM, in 1978. At present, there are more than 20 Unitrain Loadout Systems in operation worldwide. They are loading minerals, concentrates, and coal. Eleven systems are presently in service or under construction in the US. In the last several years, a number of comparable systems have also been installed. As a result, the concept has been well proven and is now commercially available from several sources. Unitrain Operation The basic operation of a ULS involves loading a unit train with individually weighed batches of coal while it moves slowly under a loadout tower. Typical coal systems are designed to load at rates of 2.7 to 6.3 kt/h (3000 to 7000 stph). The contents of each car can be accurately weighed. This meets the requirements of the National Bureau of Standards Handbook No. 44 for static weighing. Also, cars can be loaded within very close tolerances. This optimizes railcar usage and prevents overloads. Principal components of the loadout system are the main feed conveyor, the surge bin, surge bin gates, weighbin, weighbin gate, flood loading chute, control room, calibration weights, and hydraulic and electrical systems (Fig. 1). Main feed conveyor: Coal is delivered from a storage area by the main feed conveyor. The conveyor fills the surge bin. It should be capable of conveying coal at the same rate at which it is being loaded. Usually the feed conveyor is equipped with a conveyor scale that can display rate in the control room and control feed to the belt. The surge bin will typically store 227 to 272 t (250 to 300 st) of coal. If the loadout is installed in an over-the-track silo, there is no need for a surge bin. Four double-bladed, hydraulically actuated gates are incorporated into the bottom of the surge bin. These gates open to fill the weighbin. Automatic pre-act points are selected by the control system. They shut these gates as the desired weight is approached. The final amount of coal is added by a single gate that closes. This results in a weighed batch of coal within ± 0.5% of the selected optimum load per railcar. Thus, if loading 91-t (100-st) capacity cars, the system is set to batch up 90.2 t (99.5 st) batches. Conway’s Law states that unless we intentionally design automation tools around what we need, we will simply replicate our existing processes. While we may achieve some savings this way, there is an opportunity for greater benefits if we re-imagine the way we, as an industry, perform design. This paper examines current technology and shows how even small departures from merely encoding what we currently do could reap significant benefits. From these examples a framework is developed for a new and innovative approach tvo automation that will allow us to design more quickly, to a higher quality, and communicate outcomes more effectively.

The following is a progress report on a continuing study being made by the Sanitary District for purposes of developing reliable data for predicting costs and progress on future tunnel contracts. All data available to date on five separate tunnel contracts has been analyzed. All were machine-mined in soft ground, all used steel ribs and wood lagging and finished inside diameters varying from 5'6" to 6'6". Basic data regarding progress per shift, hours mined per shift, hours of downtime per shift, cause of downtime and type of soil mined were reported by the District's resident engineer at the job site. Figure 1, Weekly Mining Report is an example of the form used. Data regarding manpower and equipment used during tunnelling operations was also supplied by the resident engineer during the course of construction. Soil type being mined was verified by the resident engineer during construction, by visual observation, and compared with data listed on a previously prepared soil profile. The Alton Coal project, located in south-central Utah, lies at one point just over six miles from Bryce Canyon National Park. This region of the southwestern United States has been called the "Golden Circle" of national parks and monuments. Can a mine be inserted into this region so that it does not intrude on this spectacular landscape? The Alton Coal Project is a proposed surface coal mine designed to serve as the fuel source for the Harry Allen Power Plant, a 1,000 megawatt generating station planned for a site 25 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The mine and the power plant will be connected by an underground pipeline through which coal will be transported in slurry form.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is used in the paper, plastics, paint, rubber, caulks, and sealants industries. The favorable properties of GCC include high whiteness and brightness, low hardness, and outstanding rheology in water systems. The quality of calcitic GCC ores, which include chalk, limestone, and marble, is dependent on calcite purity and the nature and quantity of ancillary minerals. Wet and dry grinding is used in the manufacture of GCC. Ore processed by optical sorting, flotation, and/or particle size classification has higher brightness and lower abrasion. GCC markets are a function of the product's properties, purity, and cost.

After being closed for three years, Specialty Minerals Inc.'s Port Inland limestone facility reopened in the spring of 1992 as a commercial limestone producer. In 1990, Specialty Minerals, a division of Pfizer Inc., bought Port Inland's reserves and equipment from Inland Steel because of the strategic value of the limestone for the production of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC). Specialty Minerals' project team faced many challenges in reconstructing the Port Inland facility. Many traditions and norms had to be overturned to achieve the productivity, flexibility and cost necessary to survive in today's competitive minerals environment. Port Inland's history Inland Steel built Port Inland in 1930. It was operated as a captive source of metallurgical grade limestone for the steel industry until its closure in 1989. The facility is located in the Upper Pen¬insula of Michigan on the north edge of Lake Michigan. Operations consist of a deep water port facility with crushing, screening and stockpile storage for 453 kt (500,000 st) of finished product at the port. Ninety-nine percent of the stone is shipped by lake boat to ports within the Great Lakes. The operation is unique in that both metallurgical dolomite and limestone are produced on site.

Electroplating is a widely utilized but little understood process. The fact that the average person is in contact with dozens of plated items daily without even being aware that they are electroplated is evidence of the success of the process. Although a complete explanation of electrodeposition involves thermodynamics and modern theories of bonding and catalytic reactions, in its simplest form the process conforms to the following description. A metal salt dissolved in water partially dissociates into negatively charged and positively charged ions. In the case of nickel sulfate dissolved in water, for example, a portion of the salt dissociates into positively charged nickel ions and negatively charged sulfate ions. If an electrical potential is applied between two electrodes in this solution, the nickel ions migrate toward the cathode and the sulfate ions toward the anode. The negatively charged cathode has a high concentration of electrons, which combine with the positively charged metal ions to form neutral metal atoms with a stable electron configuration. These insoluble atoms thus form a deposit on the cathode.
