After the successful breakthrough at the end of 2006 of both TBMs into the multifunctional site Faido (MFS), in the middle of 2007 the two tunnel boring machines resumed the 12 km long section between Faido and Sedrun. In the roughly a 10 month interval both approximately 465 m long tunnel boring machines were partly dismantled, pushed through the 2.5 km long MFS, rebuilt for the new larger diameter of 9.5 m and reassembled to be ready for operation. In the rebuilding phase, improvements were made to the equipment, especially as a result of experience gained from the previous 14 km long drive in the section Bodio and taking into account the latest information regarding the upcoming 14 km section Faido. Both TBM drives are currently in the rock formations of the Lucomagno gneiss, which stretch over a section of 3.5 km from the MFS Faido to the predicted Piora Syncline. This section is divided into two fold axes of the Chièra Synform, where the Lucomagno gneiss pass from a sub-horizontal into vertical bedding. The drives, with current rock overburdens exceeding 1,500 m and, as known from the excavation phase of the MFS, in part highly disturbed rock formations, are characterized by the locally intense rock squeezing conditions with large convergences in the vicinity of the driving TBM as well as backwards due to the interaction of the two drives. High expenditure for the support measures, reduced driving performances together with extensive extra work associated with deadlines and increased costs are the result. In the paper the previous experience with the TBM drives in the section Faido and the challenges still awaiting us are presented and discussed.

The Brightwater conveyance system includes 26 km of tunnels, a 130 mgd pump station, 2 km of micro tunnels, and a 2.4 km outfall. The tunnels extend from Woodinville to Puget Sound through varying soils in 1 to 7 bars of hydrostatic pressure and depths to 185 m. The tunnel diameters range from 4 to 6 m and include numerous lining systems. This paper highlights major shaft and tunnel design, including dual cellshafts, multiple pipe configuration tunnels, polymer concrete segments, and the use of a one pass lining designed to convey high pressure effluent.

Signal processing is a major challenge for In-Seam Seismic (ISS) technique. Fourier Transform is an important tool for signal processing such as frequency analysis. However, for ISS signal, localized information, especially time-frequency localization is even more important. Wavelet Transform (WT) provides another approach to study the signal as a function of frequency and time. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the application and advantages of WT to seismic signal analysis. Both transmission and reflection signals from coal mine void detection experiments are analyzed. The results illustrate that WT appears to be a powerful and convenient method for the in-seam seismic signal processing.

In addition to compliance with government emissions and reporting requirements, mining and mineral processing companies are increasing energy efficiency to reduce costs and become more competitive in the global marketplace. One of the major obstacles to identifying opportunities for increased energy efficiency is the lack of readily available data on energy use, and more importantly the energy use linked to production data, that identify energy reduction opportunities. As well as energy reduction, mining and mineral processing companies often struggle with the prediction of energy use, and are often penalized for under or over forecasting. Once again, it is the lack of timely information that makes this prediction difficult. This paper looks at expanding the use of a Manufacturing Execution Systems by integrating with Energy Solutions. This will provide automatic, timely information, at a granularity that makes it easier to identify energy reduction opportunities, reduce energy costs, and better predict energy use in a mining and mineral processing operation.

In 2006, McNally International Inc., in a joint venture partner-ship with Aecon Constructors, was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: the Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers and the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS) Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue, both in the Toronto area. These projects comprised a total of 13 km (8 miles) of 2.74 m (9 ft) finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the YDSS. Both contracts required the use of earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) with a precast concrete segmental liner.

The Nchanga Cu-Co ore deposit of the Zambian Copperbelt, is hosted in Neoproterozoic siliciclastic-carbonate sedimentary rocks, and it consists of two orebodies: the Lower Orebody (shale) and the Upper Orebody (arkose). Refractory Cu ores present in the Upper Orebody comprise 150 Mt with average 0.87% Cu, and are characterized by inadequate recovery of copper by leaching. This materials characterization study, conducted on refractory ore samples from the Upper Orebody using optical microscopy, QEMSCAN®, and microprobe, has shown that copper occurs mainly in biotite, phlogopite, malachite, pseudomalachite and goethite. QEMSCAN® has quantified the abundance of each phase and total Cu deportment in each phase.

D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. Roof support systems have evolved from standing posts and timbers to a generation termed ?big nails? where steel bars are inserted into boreholes and anchored with expansion shells and/or resin cartridges. These systems have been effective but are limited to mining height. Additionally, the properties of steel do not resists shear forces or have the flexibility being required in difficult ground conditions. The next generation of roof support systems is coupling the best parts of the ?big nail? and resin grouted cable bolt systems. This paper will present the advanced technical solutions of the next generation of cable systems that includes an indented high-capacity PC-strand used with a variety of fixtures. Case histories of support applications will be presented.

The innovative Soil-Cement Mixing Wall Technique, developed independently in Japan, consists of mixing in-place soils with cement grout using multi-axis augers and mixing paddles to construct overlapping soil-cement columns. The applications of overlapped soil-cement columns include cutoff walls for groundwater control and structural diaphragm walls for excavation support. The special features of this technique include water tightness, versatile strength design, and efficient installation in subsurface materials varying from clayey soils to cobbles or soft rocks. Through the introduction of two recent subway projects in Japan, this paper presents the design parameters, construction procedure, quality control and performance of soil-cement wall for excavation support and groundwater control.

The Río Agrio of northern Patagonia, Argentina, is highly acidic due to inputs of volcanic gases (SO2, HCl, HF) in its headwaters. The watershed includes a hyper-acidic (pH <0.5) volcanic crater lake, a larger glacially carved lake that is also strongly acidic (pH 2.6 to 2.7) and an acidic river that flows for more than 40 km (25 miles) before its pH is completely neutralized. This unique watershed has many geochemical and biological similarities to acid waters caused by mining. This paper describes the Río Agrio watershed and draws a comparison with some famous acid mine waters. Learning more about naturally acidic lakes and river systems could have important applications to the bioleaching of ores or biological treatment of mine waters. Therefore, it should be of interest to the general community of mining and metallurgical engineers.

In the drive for faster development advance rates, railbound systems can be advantageous, in the right application. Skanska BS, the contractor to mine-owner VSK Mining, is driving an adit access deep into the Volouské Urchy Mountain in Slovakia to access the Gemerská Poloma talc deposit, some 70 km (43 miles) west of Ko?ice, the economic and cultural center of eastern Slovakia. Skanska began driving the Stolna Elisabeth drift in February 2007, extending 25 kg/m (50 lb/yd) rails (with 750 mm or 30 in. between sleepers) into the mountain to provide the main haulage to bring talc ore and waste out of the new mine once it gets into production. It will also be used for personnel transport, and is now almost complete. As a second egress and for ventilation, a 2.5-m- (8.2-ft-) diameter shaft of about 300-m (984-ft) depth will be sunk from surface down into the orebody. Stolna Elisabeth is a 4.2-km- (2.6-mile-) long drift mined at a cross section of some 11 m2 (118 sq ft). The finished profile is 3.2-m- (10.5-ft-) wide by 3.6-m- (11.8-ft-) high. It has been developed on a very slight incline so that water runs down it to the portal. The portal is 450 m (1,476 ft) above sea level and the end of the tunnel is 475 m (1,558 ft) above sea level. Much of the rock through which it has been developed is magnesite with a compressive strength of 150 MPA. The drilling jumbo is an Atlas Copco twin-boom Boomer 282 Raildrill drilling 42- to 45-mm- (1.6- to 1.7-in.-) diameter holes to a maximum length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft), depending on ground conditions. This is a drill jumbo that Skanska has used successfully on a number of projects during its life. The condition of the rock through which this drift has been driven is extremely variable. Five classifications of A1 and A2 and B1, B2 and [ ] B3, where A1 is the most competent rock and B3 is the worst, have been established. The amount of support used, of which more later is determined by the classification of ground conditions. At the time of the author?s visit, the project it was about 40 days ahead of schedule, thanks to high advance rates. For instance 6 m/day (20 ft/d) was the plan for the advance to be achieved in B1 rock, but sometimes the crews have achieved 8 m/day (26 ft/d) ? which is the average for the whole project ? in those conditions. In A1 the best advance rate achieved is 12 m/day (39 ft/d). The loading unit is a Häggloader 9HR-B on crawler tracks with a pony track to run on the rails. This allows the unit to be towed up and down the drift along the rails. To load from the face, the Häggloader lowers the foot of its onboard conveyor system to the floor and the backhoe pushes material on to it. This digging arm-conveyor combination produces uninterrupted, optimal volume loading of the haulage unit, without spill ? a technique offering load capacities as high as 180 m3/h (6,356 cu ft/hour). In August 1996 Barrick Gold Corporation acquired the Pierina property, an advanced stage exploration project, high in the Andean Cordillera of Peru and in November 1998, in a record time of just over two years, poured the first gold. After more than three years of a very successful operation at some of the lowest operating costs in the world, this presentation serves to briefly describe the project through design, construction and start-up and in particular to spotlight some of the challenges that have been overcome in valley heap leaching in a high rainfall, alpine setting.

Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia?s underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for over twenty years. Mortality from Coal Workers? Pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in x-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. To understand this disparity, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among United States coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure, and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above observed differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not show any significant differences. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. Assuming that quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of advanced pneumoconiosis in the U.S., more effective dust control measures, as well an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, need to be implemented to prevent this potentially disabling condition.

Vale Inco Ltd. is trialing several energy conservation initiatives in an effort to minimize costs and reduce green house gas emissions. The Ventilation on Demand (VOD) concept is a major project being carried out in various phases at Vale Inco mines. Due to the complex nature of a dynamic VOD system, Vale Inco is taking a systematic approach of testing VOD system components with milestone evaluations of each project. Coleman Mine was selected to pilot test the functionality and robustness of automated louvers in the underground environment; with the goal of optimizing mine airflow such that ventilation would be available for developing a new ore body. This project involved installing automated louvers in the exhaust raises; and installing variable frequency drive (VFD) starters on auxiliary supply fans. Because the VOD project created efficient utilization of the ventilation air in the 153 OB, the 170 OB is currently being developed without increasing the total fresh air into the mine. This paper describes the louver system component of VOD as applied at the mine.

A high calcium fluid-bed combustor ash has been shown to be an effective binder at dosages of 1 to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 Newtons/pellet (5.0 pounds force/pellet), which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. Addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 to 0.2% of the total powder weight increased the strength of dried pellets by as much as 22% compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

Elemental analysis of slurry streams using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has long been employed. However, detector technology has limited the application of XRF devices. Using detector technology employed on NASA&apos;s Mars Pathfinder to analyze soil samples, Process Control, Inc. has developed an on-line analyzer to mount on a sampling system. The prototype XRF elemental analyzer was installed at Detroit Edison&apos;s Monroe Power Plant in January, 1998 and has been employed to monitor feedstock quality. A slurry system has been developed for flotation control. This paper describes the testing of the analyzer using the new, draft ISO standard for evaluating the performance of online analyzers (ISO/DIS15239).

Train services through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France where scheduled to be fully restored in February 2009 following several months of repairs after a major fire in the tunnel on Sept. 11, 2008. A lorry caught fire on a shuttle train carrying heavy goods vehicles bound for France through the 50-km- (31-mile-) long northern tunnel. The fire, that spread to other vehicles, raged for about 16 hours. The extreme temperatures of up to 1,000º C (1,832° F) caused extensive damage to about 600 m (2,000 ft) of the 7.6-m- (25-ft-) diameter tunnel?s concrete lining, approximately 11 km (7 miles) in from the French entrance. The Channel Tunnel operator, Eurotunnel, awarded the repair con-tract, estimated to be between ?50 to 60 million, to a consortium of Freyssinet, Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires (ETF) and Vinci Energies. Freyssinet was appointed to look after the civil engineering works, while ETF would be responsible for track and overhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for other equipment. The technique of hydrodemolition, which uses high-pressure water jets to remove concrete from various structures, was specified as the method to remove the fire damaged concrete. Freyssinet subcontracted the concrete removal to the specialist hydrodemolition and industrial cleaning contractor Philip Lasserat.
