The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig is an enhanced gravity concentrator capable of separating fine minerals and/or minerals with relatively small differences in specific gravity. Since the first commercial installation at the Renison Bell tin mine in Australia, development and improvement in hardware has continued, including the introduction of the high-capacity J1800model Kelsey Jig. The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig is widely applicable to fine mineral recovery duties, with key application areas including mineral sands, tin, gold and nickel. Other areas of application include: iron ore, base metals, chromite, PGMs, soil remediation and scheelite. The latest developments on the Kelsey Jig are discussed together with a review of recent installations involving: • Fine gold / sulphide recovery from leach tailings • Magnesium mineral removal from nickel sulphide concentrates • High-grade zircon recovery from plant tailings

This paper presents the excavation of the Roosevelt Island Valve Chamber, the final of three chambers in Stage One of New York City's Third Water Tunnel. The valve chamber and passageways 13 379.7 cu m (17 500 cu yd) are drilled and blasted. The rock is stabilized by grouted rock anchors. The 6.1 m (20 ft) diameter shaft is drilled, blasted, rock bolted and wire meshed for a depth of 70.7 m (232 ft). Then shaft excavation proceeds with immediate concrete lining for another 120.7 m (396 ft). Two 6.1m (20 ft) diameter manifolds are excavated using heading and bench. The raise drilling of eight 3.7 m (12 ft) diameter laterals occurs during lower shaft sinking.

Diffusion is known to be the main transport mechanism of contaminants in fine-gained soils. To date, it is still common practice to estimate contaminant migration in the Bangkok Clay by means of pure advection models. A series of experiments with various chemical species was performed to determine transport parameters such as the diffusion coefficients and the distribution coefficients. The soil used was saturated undisturbed Soft Bangkok Clay. Column experiments were utilized in a number of laboratory tests involving advective-diffusive migration. Effective diffusion coefficients of different ions were back calculated from the test results. The distribution coefficients were determined from the results of the column tests and batch test. The results indicate that the evaluated parameters are in the range of values obtained from other researchers on similar kinds of soil. Based on this results contaminant migration by diffusion in the Soft Bangkok Clay can now be performed.

Extractive industry (mining and quarrying operations), as other industrial activities, is subject to environment protection laws, regulation and standards such as the Environmental Impact Assessment directive, Natura 2000, Habitats & Birds directive, Water Framework directive etc The European Commission (EC) is aim to strengthen the EU environmental legislation to improve the (environmental and human) safety of mining activities. The mineral processing and the management of the mining waste will be covered by the new amendment of the Seveso II Directive, by a Best Available Techniques reference document (BREF) describing the Best Available Techniques of mining waste management and a new directive on the mining waste management. At the same time initiatives as the environmental liability, the energy taxation for environmental reasons and the natural resources management policy, which will have a positive impact on the protection of the environment, will affect the extractive industry operation procedures.

Column flotation technique is applied for the depression of the magnetic material by the application of an axial magnetic field from chalcopyrite ore. It is observed that an increase in the intensity of magnetic field from 0 to 316.8 oersteds decreased the magnetic content in the froth from 25 to 2 %. . This might be due to retention of magnetic material in the magnetizable zone and the diffusion of nonmagnetics through it. The effect of air velocity increased the magnetic content in the froth and total froth content also. At low gas velocity the tiny bubbles are formed whereas at high gas velocity these coalesce into big bubbles and slugs formed breaks the magnetizable zone. This study opens a new field called 'Magneto-flotation'.

PT Freeport's mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia uses a number of 500 m (1,640 ft) long vertical ore passes to transfer ore from the open pit to the mill. The current tonnages moved are in the order of 125 kt/d (138,000 stpd) and this will be increasing to 240 kt/d (265,000 stpd). This amount of falling rock generates high pres¬sures in the ore bins, when ore feed is terminated the pressure is no longer constrained resulting in back blasting of materials and air the ore passes. Three methods were tested to try and eliminate or reduce this problem; recirculation the entrained air, widening of the orepasses and relieving the pressure the back blast. The final method proved to be the most effective in the short term. As a long term so¬lution the orepasses are currently undergoing widening.

United States production of the industrial minerals, ahead of that of the metals since 1946, has shown a steady and rapid growth. By 1963, their value was more than twice that of the metals. Yet papers on the metallic ores continue to dominate the meetings of the Society of Economic Geologists and constitute nearly nine-tenths of the lead papers in Economic Geology. Most of the geological communication that does take place concerning the industrial minerals deals with high-value special-purpose minerals, which are comparable to the metallic ores in geologic complexity. The large-bulk rock products, which are growing fastest in production value, are characterized by relatively simple geology and by thousands of small producing firms, many of which do little or no geological work. The need for geological advice by this very large segment of the industry is bound to increase. In the meantime, a plea is made for more geological communication among those concerned with the industrial minerals of all varieties.

At present, increasing focus of public perception is placed on the environmental and social benefits, risks and impacts of metals and metal-bearing products. To address these issues, the concept of product stewardship has recently been introduced into the political debate. In this paper, results from a survey of existing environmental and social reporting practice in the copper mining, smelting, refining and fabricating industry are presented. In this context, particular emphasis is placed on the reporting practice regarding products and product performance over the life cycle. In a few companies there has recently been a shift towards adopting product stewardship principles and putting them into action. As part of an ongoing exercise within the Non-Ferrous Consultative Forum on Sustainable Development sponsored by the International Copper Study Group (ICSG) key issues of interest to the non-ferrous metals sector are being addressed. The Forum, for example, has developed a series of principles, criteria and indicators that could form the basis for a voluntary, industry-lead product stewardship scheme. Current achievements and way forward of this product stewardship initiative will be presented.

Nearly one third of Australia's total gold product is produced in the Kambaloa - Kalgoorlie - Leonora Goldfields. There are presently some 25 gold mines in the area with the possibility of another six plants being constructed in the next year. Details of the gold extraction techniques used on these mines will be discussed and certain innovative technologies and problem areas will be highlighted.

A copper heap leach model, employing leading edge computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology, is applied to the Zaldivar heap leach operation in Chile in order to explore and analyze the possible impact of operational changes. The effect of changes to the heap operation on copper recovery has been previously investigated and reported by the Zaldivar operation. This paper examines the extent to which a comprehensive heap leach model supports the analysis and conclusions of the published work. The heap is a complex multi-phase process, consisting of a solid static porous media with complex fluid flow, gas and liquid phases, competing solid-liquid reactions, dissolution of minerals and transport through the heap. The model accounts for the physical and chemical features of the heap, including transport and reactions kinetics for the important copper and iron sulfide minerals, ferrous oxidation, bacterial effects, thermal energy, acid and sulfate balances. The model was calibrated to published data on the ore body and employed to analyze the impact of a number of operational changes, including solution flow rate, acidity, lift height, crush size and head grade.

A brittle solid broken by crushing or impact, results in a mass size distribution curve having a straight line segment when plotted on log-log paper. Depending on the mineral, the slope of this straight line segment ranges from a maximum of one for materials like glass and quartz to values of one half or less. Theoretical derivations of the size distribution, such as the Gaudin-Meloy model, yield a slope of one and only one. When the Gaudin-Meloy model is modified to assume that not all cracks terminate on a preexisting surface, the new model predicts that size distribution slopes, depending on the type of brittle solid, will be less than one. There is a measurable physical parameter that will predict the slope. In addition the model predicts that particles from such a size distributions will have negative corners and peaks - indentations. Moreover the model predicts that particle shape will systematically change with decreasing particle size. Finally, this new physical model of comminution may be experimentally tested.

In early 1988, Chino Mines Co. began using a system of economic splits for all materials encountered in mining. All mined material is evaluated as mill ore, solvent extraction electrowinning plant feed, and non-ore material, to determine its disposition. Results thus far indicate a significant increase in financial returns on material mined compared with the copper cutoff grade previously in use. Chino Mines is a partnership between Phelps Dodge Corp. (two-thirds ownership) and Mitsubishi Corp. (one-third ownership). The company produces copper and byproduct metals from the historic Santa Rita del Cobre mining district in southwestern New Mexico. The history of copper production in the district began with the use of surface native copper by native Americans before 1800. Spanish soldiers from Mexico later became aware of this district and mining began in 1801. The district was worked intermittently until 1909 when the Chino Copper Co. was formed, with Daniel C. Jackling as vice president and managing director. Concentrator operations were started in 1911. Kennecott purchased the company in 1933 and built a smelter in 1939. Chino Mines Co. was formed in 1980 when Mitsubishi purchased one-third of Kennecott's holding at the property.

A group of gold deposits in southeastern Ecuador, near the town of Zamora, have become the focus of intensive mining activity, due to their extremely high gold grade (unconfirmed reports of about 50 g/t or 1.4 oz per st, or more). The deposits at Nambija and other prospects in the district are hosted by a sequence of sedimentary and volcanic rocks that are present within a large xenolith orpendant within alkalic phases of the Jurassic Zamora Batholith. The xenolith, unknown in size, is composed of various island arc lithologies (limestones, shales, sandstones, tuffs and flows). All have been altered to some degree by skarn-hornfelde alteration assemblages. Mineralized areas appear to be localized within a linear zone containing tectonic and intrusion breccias that cross-cut a complex calcic skarn assemblage developed within the xenolith. Although the nature of the host rocks appears to have exerted some control on mineralization, the high-grade ore is concentrated along north-northeast trending breccias, faults and dikes that crosscut the flat-lying stratigraphy and skarn alteration as suggested by the strong linear trend of workings in the district.

Lead and Zinc concentrates are being recovered at Rajpura- Dariba (Distt. Rajsamand, Rajasthan, India) from a complex multi metal sulphide deposit since 1984 by selective flotation employing a large number of reagents. The cost of concentrates' production has been high. Due to the increased availability of concentrates world over and to be competitive, it is necessary to reduce cost of production. An effort has been made by the R.D. Department of Hindustan Zinc Limited to bring down the cost by resorting to production of Bulk Pb + Zn concentrate with enough Ag to make it attractive to the smelters. This paper gives an account of open cycle testing and locked cycle testing in the Dowa Continous Mini Flotation unit. The metallurgical data generated in the mini flotation unit indicate the possibility of obtaining smelter-acceptable bulk concentrates containing Pb+Zn 45%, Ag 400 ppm and graphite carbon about 3%. An in-plant trial in the 3000 TPD concentrator indicated that there would be savings through dispensing with and reduction in some reagents, lower power requirement, etc. Also, a substantial increase in revenue is expected due to higher recoveries by resorting to bulk concentrate production as against individual concentrates.

For our company, S&B Industrial Minerals S.A., restoration of areas which were mined and the effort for bringing up again a balance of nature is an important priority over the last 3 decades. The successful qualitative results of restoration works have delivered to nature over 1.700.000 m2 of surface after mining activity. Our fundamental method in order to achieve the best results for restoration of mined areas is the use of local plants (bush or tree type). Grass and herbs are installed by using the method of hydroseeding. Small trees and bushes are produced and they grow up at our fully owned Milos nursery and they are installed during winter when weather conditions are suitable. During the initial stages of restoration activities a great amount of surfaces, adequately shaped, are delivered by the mining department covered with top soil. These surfaces are suitable not only for the local nature community but also for a combination between natural and agricultural environment. The above fact was a great chance to create small horizontal agricultural cultivations as pilots inside the restored areas. At the beginning the agricultural items that could potentially be installed in these pilot areas were studied and examined analytically. The following agricultural items were finally qualified to be furthermore researched: 1) Vineyard (Vitis vinifera ) 2) Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) 3) Jojoba (Simmonsia chinensis) 4) Olive tree (Olea europea)

The minerals industry, comprising producers and users of industrial minerals and metals, aggregates and ornamental or dimensional stone, oil, gas and derivates as well as coal and by-products, provides vital inputs to Europe's economy and social well-being. Because of their great diversity, minerals and their derived products are necessary for almost every aspect of life. The European Technology Platform on Sustainable Mineral Resources (ETP SMR) unites hundreds stakeholders from industry, the re-search community, public authorities, the financial community, regulators, consumers and civil society around the major technological challenges to the sector, in order to jointly act towards a common vision. The Platform will contribute to strengthening one of the fundamental pillars of the European economy and society. The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) of the ETP SMR is designed to act as a realistic and inspirational guide to defining a comprehensive research programme that will mobilise stake-holders and ensure that European competences are at the forefront of science & technology worldwide. It will help to stimulate investment in research and provide guidance for policy options. The SRA shows the way the mineral industry has to proceed in forthcoming decades if it is to serve European society in the way necessary. Without a strong European minerals industry, the future development of the EU economy risks to be curbed significantly.

It appears that the competition for increasingly scarce international mining investment capital will continue among developing countries. Indeed, there is growing evidence this competition may be on the verge of becoming destructive and cutthroat in nature. While this may be viewed as good news by short-term, speculative investors, it could have dangerous repercussions for international minerals producers over the long-term. It seems there has been a continuous parade of traveling foreign delegations touting the virtues of mineral investment in one country or another. These pitches all contain the politically correct key words, such as macro-economic reform, political reform, privatization, liberalization of laws governing mining and related investment incentives, reconciliation of ownership and right-to mine issues, and tax reform specially tailored for the minerals sector. Unfortunately, some of the information being trumpeted is based on plans, concepts or hopes for change rather than actual reforms approved by all necessary governmental entities. In yet other situations, the information provided consists of half-truths at best. Too often, potential minerals investors, faced with metals and minerals prices hovering near their recession lows and the need to offset old, high-cost operations, desperately want to believe all they hear about investment alternatives cast in a near-utopian setting. However, the virtues being proffered for mining investment abroad do not eliminate the need for careful scrutiny of subtle variations of traditional risks associated with foreign investment that can drastically affect the economic viability of mining projects.

Introduction The US Bureau of Mines' (USBM) world reserve/consumption ratios (Table 1) indicate that, if the world is relatively peaceful in the next two decades, there should be ample world supplies of minerals to permit rising standards of living for increasing world population. But it must be remembered that most mineral reserve estimates are conservative and that normal mining practice is to develop a ton of ore reserve for every ton mined. It should be noted that "reserve," as used in this paper follows the definition given in US Geological Survey (USGS) Circular 831, 1980; "that part of the reserve base which could be economically extracted or produced at the time of the determination." In addition to accurately determining the geologic parameters of mineral deposits, a judgment as to whether that deposit is a "reserve" per se involves consideration of many other factors. These factors were recognized nearly a century ago by a well-known mining engineer and later President, Herbert Hoover. In "Principles of Mining," 1909, Hoover wrote: "Unfortunately for the mining engineer, not only has he to weigh the amount of risk inherent in calculations involved in the mine itself, but also that due to fluctuations in the value of metals. If the ore is shipped to custom works, he has to contemplate also variations in freights and smelting charges ...In a free market, the law of supply and demand governs the values of metals as it does that of all other commodities. So far, except for tariff walls and smelting rings, there is a free market in the metals under discussion. The demand for metals varies with the unequal fluctuations of the industrial tides. The sea of commercial activity is subject to heavy storms, and the mine valuer is compelled to serve as weather prophet on this ocean of trouble. High prices, which are the result of industrial booms, bring about overproduction, and the collapse of these begets a shrinkage of demand, wherein consequently the tide of price turns back." Current supplies and use There have been ample supplies of most mineral materials to permit several-fold increases of world production of common major mineral based minerals (steel, aluminum, copper, and cement) over the past three decades. Motor vehicle production is a major consumer of mineral materials. However, in the last decade, down-sizing to facilitate improved fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions has reduced the weight of the average US-made automobile 15%, to 1.5 t (3200 lbs). Also in the US, there are 92 million dwelling units, or on average, fewer than three persons per dwelling unit. Construction is another major consumer of materials in the industrialized developed countries. It will also be a major consumer of materials worldwide as less developed nations seek to improve their infrastructures by adding roads, bridges, railroads, airfields, ports, and housing. Fortunately, a large number of traditional common materials, many of mineral origin and also many of agricultural origin, are readily available for construction. The mid to late 1980s saw a modern day global gold rush that largely focused on the mature mining countries of the United States, Canada and Australia. This gold rush led to a large number of new discoveries in these countries and phenomenal growth rates in annual gold production. For a variety of reasons, however, gold exploration and development activity appears to have peaked in these countries. The drive for mineral investment is, instead, growing in lesser explored countries (LEC). LECs, particularly those of Latin America, are currently enjoying greatly increased attention from North American mining companies. They are becoming major consumers of mineral investment capital and are important markets for exploration and mining skills. Through sole ownership, joint ventures and subsidiary companies, Battle Mountain Gold now operates or controls gold mines in the United States, Chile, Bolivia and Australia. And it has been or is an active participant in gold exploration or development projects in seven other countries, six of which classify as LECs. In selecting new country entries and opportunities for mineral investment, there are several factors to be considered and parties to be satisfied - shareholders, corporate management, financial institutions and host country governments. This article, though, focuses on some of the more practical concerns of the exploration unit as a whole and the exploration geologist in particular. The exploration unit's "new country" concerns primarily relate to exploration potential, ownership security, quality and availability of data and the ability to operate efficiently. The following material reviews each of these concerns and how they impact the new country entry decision, exploration strategy, chances of success and human experience.
