Permeable reactive barriers (PRB) are one of the most promising systems for groundwater remediation. PRB are constructed with the purpose to intercept the contaminated flow and to degrade it as a big reactive filter. The most common type of reactive barriers is realized by excavating a trench and by filling it with a substance able to treat the contaminants dissolved in the water. Another type of PRB is obtained by realizing a line of wells in which chemically active compounds are injected. A new method for barrier construction has been studied at DIGITA?s laboratories. It makes use of the waterjet technology to increase soil permeability and to inject active compounds. This technology is especially suitable in the case of deep contaminated aquifers where traditional construction methods are difficult to apply. The paper describes the experimental apparatus especially designed and constructed and the activities carried out to investigate the relationship between waterjet operative parameters and the penetration of the jet in the soil. In conclusion, on the basis of the experimental results, the economical feasibility of the technique is evaluated.

Nowadays, VR is regarded as a mature technology for real world representation, and it has been already applied in various domains such as architecture, topography, aeronautics, medicine, and lately in the process industry. Several industrial sectors already use VR tools, as the car industry for improving car ergonomics and design and the aviation industry for both pilot and maintenance crew training. It is well known that the mining industry, as well as the process industry, requires people to work in hazardous environments and situations, often inadequately trained owing to limitations in time and resources, building thus the potential for minor or major accidents.

To study the hydrogeological processes that control the movement of water through unsaturated waste rock, an intermediate-scale (8m x 8m x 5m) waste rock pile has been constructed and instrumented. The constructed pile is monitored for moisture content, matric suction, temperature, matrix water chemistry, gas chemistry, gas pressure, rainfall, evaporation, discharge volume and discharge chemistry. The pile is built upon a grid of 16 contiguous lysimeters. The experiment is designed to investigate the mechanisms that create rapid water flow through a pile and its exchange with slower-moving matrix water.

Open-pit mining began at Red Dog in 1989. Mining is expected to continue past 2030 but closure planning is an ongoing process. Geochemical studies of rock and tailings were begun in 1996 as part of development of closure plans to address leaching of metals and ARD. The deposit has many different primary and secondary sulfur minerals in amounts that preclude the use of conventional geochemical characterization methods. This paper will describe development of a specific chemical method to estimate the speciation of sulfur and classify wastes according to reactivity.

The importance and complexity of the ventilation systems in many underground coal mines necessitates the use of digital computers to model the ventilation networks. The modeling procedures used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) utilize the MSHA-modified Penn State computer program. The basic techniques used by MSHA have been described in detail in NESA (now MSHA) Informational Reports 1066 and 1183 (1. 2). Two basic methods are utilized for modeling underground mine ventilation systems. The first modeling method is the use of actual air-flow, pressure, and fan-performance data acquired during a full air-pressure, air-quantity ventilation survey to develop a mathematical model of the ventilation system. The second modeling method is the design of a ventilation system using data obtained from calculation, from past experience, or from technical literature. The latter method would typically be used to design a ventilation network prior to developing a new mine. Regardless of which method is used for modeling, there is a need to know, or to calculate, appropriate resistance values to be used for airways and for the various ventilation control structures. Such data is typically difficult to obtain and this report is an attempt to summarize typical resistance values which may be used in designing ventilation networks for new mines or in simulating proposed system changes in existing mines. Illustrations are presented to show where some of the resistances typically are located and how they are modeled in mine ventilation net- works.

Finally. in some instances dynamic isolation my be used prior to installation of the control system to determine the strategy to be used or to evaluate the improvements In process performance expected from automatic control. This paper describes the development of a methodology for making these evaluations. In order to obtain an accurate assessment of Improvements In a short time, statistical methods can be employed. Mineral processing plant, are subjected to many types of both random and deterministic disturbances of various duration. The statistical method, available for process control at analysis are designed to counter the obscuring effects that random disturbances have on such as evaluation. The basis for evaluation and comparison is some freely chosen measures of process performance termed the performance index or objective function. The experimental data used to calculate the performance index should, if possible, be collected by alternately running a circuit Or plant with the two or more type, or control being tested ("serial testing”) or more preferably, by running two circuits with the two type, of control side by side ("parallel testing") . The performance index is a random variable so that when comparing two types of control, statistical hypothesis testing must be used. By testing s hypothesis statistically one accept, or reject, a (null) hypothesis [ ] concerning the mean or variance of one or more performance indices. For example, a hypothesis Ho might be that the mean of a performance index with stabilizing control is larger than with manual control. Defining a Performance Index The performance index, denoted by [ ] , is a measure by which alternative strategies or situations my be cam peered on either s technical or an economic basis (see Table 1). Technical measures are concerned with the effects of control on process variables or outputs or on the deviations of controlled variable, from their setpoints. For commotion circuit, important technical measures of performance are throughput, product fineness and the consumption of liners, media and electrical energy. For flotation circuits important technical .satires are recovery, grade and reagent consumption. Economic measure such a, cost and profit n usually determined from a combination of technical measures and are usually the final factor upon which a decision may be made, although a control system my achieve higher values of technical measure , the control effort expended my be of such magnitude that the economic measures, such as cost, are poor. Running Comparisons Comparison, between automatic and manual control are normally done with data obtained before and after control system Installation, unless ore characteristics remain the same during the period of data collection the results will be biased. By running the test circuit with the control system alternately turned on and curled off until all possible ore type, have been run through the circuit, unbiased result, can be obtained. This mode of testing is termed “serial testing.” An alternative and potentially more powerful and quicker made of testing is "parallel testing" in which two circuits, one with the type of control being tested and one without, arm run aide by side. In this type of testing both circuits process the same ore so that valid results occur sooner than with aerial testing. The data may be averaged before testing or the differences in the performance indices may first be calculated before averaging. However, the two circuits must be nearly identical in their mechanical characteristics otherwise differences other than the degree of control will bias the results. It mechanical differences exist than it my be necessary to adjust one or the circuits prior to testing. Sometimes it is possible to correct far mechanical differences based on Inherent efficiency calculations made with a model. Hypothesis Testing Once the data is collected, hypothesis fencing can be carried out to determine if the automatic control system has resulted in a statistically significant improvement. Of these, 11 were in the industrialized world, 13 in the Third World. By 1985, the number had dramatically surged to a world-wide total of 145, with the greatest growth among the developing countries to 110, an increase of almost 1000%.

Increasing environmental awareness leads to a reflection on the consequences of a non-appropriate use of mining resources. In this sense the determination of the mining requirements for the building industry is the necessary prerequisite to activate planning in mining according to the principles of environmental sustainability. Experience shows that there is a relationship between the production of buildings in relation to the shape of the city and the resulting demand for minerals. The increasingly urgent demand for maintenance and restructuring by existing buildings will stretch further the demand for minerals with an excessive, no longer sustainable withdrawal, which will lead to focussing greater attention on environmental policies oriented to the use of alternative materials including materials from recycling. It is pointed out moreover that the joint action of land use planning and mining planning leads to interesting applications that have significant repercussions on the environment.

Prior to 1971, there were several clinical trials to evaluate programs for early detection of lung cancer. Among these, the Philadelphia Pulmonary Neoplasm Research Project,(3) the Veterans Administration Study published by Lilienfeld,(7) and the controlled trial of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan showed an overall five year survival rate of 8% for newly detected cases (the same as the national statistic for unscreened patients). In 1971, the National Cancer Institute initiated three randomized, controlled mortality studies using lung cancer screening of persons at high risk (male smokers over 45 years old). The studies are being conducted at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The studies have slightly different designs in the combination of sputum cytology and chest x-rays. At the Mayo Clinic the study group is offered screening with sputum cytology and chest x-rays every four months, whereas the control group is advised to have an x-ray and cytology every year. No reminders are sent, and it is believed that only about 20% of the control group is screened. At Johns Hopkins and Memorial, both experimental and control groups are offered annual chest x-rays. The experimental group is additionally offered sputum cytology every four months.(5) At present all of the programs show that screening can detect cancers that are undetectible by other means. However, at this time mortality rates in the control and experimental groups are not significantly different in any of the three studies. OUR PROGRAM Our clinic is located in Grants, New Mexico and we provide most of the pre-employment physical examinations for the mines operating in the Grants area (Kerr McGee Nuclear, Homestake Mining, United Nuclear, Western Nuclear, and Ranchers). In the examinations, we obtain the previous mining history of the worker, a chest x-ray, a sample of sputum for cytological examination, and a blood sample. We also provide routine annual physical examinations of the workers, with special interest in the detection of bronchogenic carcinoma. In the early seventies, we did not have a definite surveillance program. We did not know whether we should have a program like the one started at Memorial or like the one started at the Mayo Clinic. After long consideration, we decided to have a program that does not demand a sputum cytology and chest x-ray every four months, but that allows as many chest x-rays and sputum cytologies as needed to diagnose lung cancer as early as possible. We believe that, if a screening method for cancer is to be optimally effective, it must detect the process at stages early enough for curative therapy. We order a test depending on the age of the miner, the race, the mining history, the smoking history, the radiation exposure levels, and the results of the previous chest x-ray and sputum cytology. With the help of the computer, we have a list of all the miners who should be watched closely because of age, race, mining history, smoking history, radiation exposure, etc. Examination of the miners is performed at our clinic, where all the records are kept. The sputum is collected there but examined in Grand Junction, Colorado, by Dr. Geno Saccomanno. There are two ways to collect sputum. The best way is to collect three consecutive morning samples. For this, we need the cooperation of the miners. They have to follow these instructions and mail the bottle containing the sample to Grand Junction. "Instructions for obtaining a good cough specimen" The enclosed plastic bottle contains a preservative solution, so do not empty out the liquid in it. When you go to bed, place the plastic bottle at your bedside where it will be handy in the morning. When you first get up in the morning (before breakfast) try to cough up some "phlegm" from deep in your chest, and spit it into the liquid in the bottle. Try coughing several times. If you have difficulty coughing, try inhaling deeply the steam from a teakettle (or home-type inhalator). Keep the amount of saliva (ordinary spit) that you put into the bottle along with the cough specimen as small as possible. Do not collect the "phlegm" or mucous that comes from the back of your nose. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it vigorously for two minutes. If the amount of material you have coughed up is quite small, then keep the bottle at your bedside for three or four days, and each morning try to add another cough specimen. After obtaining your cough specimen, repack the bottle in the mailing container, and attach the enclosed mailing label. It does not require any postage stamps. Unfortunately, some miners "forget" to mail the sample and end up with an incomplete physical examination. To avoid this some companies, like Homestake, request that we obtain the sample in our clinic by forcing cough and expectorant with a nebulizer machine. This method does not give as good a sputum sample as the previous one, but we do get a sputum sample for every miner. A short cut is presented where the average grade above a primary grade cutoff and its associated byproduct grade(s) are estimated by screening the primary and byproduct grades. For the primary variable, choose samples whose grades are above a cutoff of interest. Compute variograms for the subset of the primary variable. Then using this variogram, krige the blocks of interest only using the samples whose grades are above the cutoff. The next step is to screen byproduct grades by choosing byproduct samples whose associated primary grades are above the cutoff of interest. Next compute variograms for this subset of byproduct samples. Then using this variogram, krige the blocks of interest using byproduct sample grades whose associated primary sample grades are above the cutoff of interest. The results are the average grade above a primary cutoff for both the primary and the associated byproduct variables. Using two simulated primary and reference data sets a case study resulted in the screening krigings performing better than the indicator kriging approach in the first case study. A second case study had mixed results with the primary indicator approach performing better than the primary screened approach. The byproduct screened approach performed better than the byproduct indicator approach.

The objective of this study is to classify ore and waste in a selected mine. The support vector machine, was used for the classification purpose, is applied to a zinc ore body in a skarn deposit located in the central region of the Peruvian Andes. The input parameters used for the model are spatial coordinates and the lithological information of the ore body. The input data was divided into training and testing data sets and the performance of the model was tested using the testing data set. The results show that more than 76% of the data could be properly classified by this method. The ore waste maps of the deposit was then developed using SVM model. From the result it was observed that a comparatively very few number of cells classified as ore. The ore is concentrated in small lodes at the middle of the volume of study, and not uniformly distributed throughout the study area. The lithological map of the deposit was also constructed as it was used as an input parameter for the SVM model. The indicator kriging was used for generation of lithological map of the ore body. Empresa Minera de Mantos Blancos S.A. successfully commissioned two copper SX-EW plants in late 1995. The design of these solvent extraction plants is such that chloride tenors of 30-35 g/l can be tolerated in the leach solution with no contamination of the electrolyte. The design was carried out in conjunction with Bechtel-ARA engineers and was based on the successful application of the available technology in the market; this mainly focused on decreasing the aqueous entrainment in the organic phase. This entrainment can reach 20,000 ppm in conventional plants.

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) within the mining industry are becoming frequent events. Large companies and small companies alike are jumping on the bandwagon of merger mania. The results of these mergers have significant impacts on the employees of the involved companies. Comments, observations, and specific examples of the 'peop1e"aspect of mergers are presented in an attempt to answer the question "will it be business as usual?" My answer is a simple NO. This paper attempts to provide support for my conclusion. It has been well accepted for many decades that hard starting of conveyors has associated problems. It is particularity damaging to the belt and splices. Recent measurements of hard starts on a long conveyor with a low modulus belt showed very unusual responses. These included violent accelerations and repeated "whip cracking" of the belt. Laboratory investigations of the very high strain rates experienced by the belt during the whip cracking, show mechanisms for belt damage that are not associated with normal usage. This paper outlines the measurement to show that for long, low modulus conveyors, constant torque controls are inappropriate and time ramp controls are really essential.

The initial intent of the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) was to improve worker health by providing more information about the hazards of chemicals used in the workplace. However, the impact of the HCS goes well beyond worker right-to-know. There are direct costs associated with compliance. In addition, labelling and hazard communications can provide a competitive advantage to producers of minerals that have not been identified as hazardous. Often, the lack of hazardous information about a substance is due to the lack of scientific study, rather than an indication of product safety. Currently, industry and regulators sometimes give known hazards greater weight than unknown risks.

The 34th Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals gave members a chance to see the geology of various stone and ore deposits displayed graphically in quarry walls and also provided an opportunity to hear and see first-rate papers and posters on the geology of industrial minerals. Also, some field trips passed through areas of spectacular scenery. As a bonus, participants saw scenic mines, some of which are "pretty as a picture." Watercolor paintings prove it. At the Oklahoma Forum, the writer displayed a number of paintings of mines and other landscapes seen during previous Forum trips. These paintings and this brief article are part of a crusade to prove that some mines and geologic vistas are scenic wonders and belong in our visual heritage. It is a plea to save some of our best geologic exposures for future geologists, tourists, and artists.

Mineral liberations that would be obtained by grinding an ore to a specific size can be predicted by analyzing unbroken ore pieces, and mineral liberations in ground ores and mill products can be determined directly by image analysis. Predictions of mineral liberations are made by measuring size distributions and textures of mineral grains by image analysis and using liberation models. Ground ores and mill products are analyzed to determine the proportion of mineral that is liberated, and the data are used to evaluate mineral behavior during mineral beneficiation. The liberation data for minerals in a suite of mill products from a circuit are processed by a materials balancing technique to calculate recoveries of minerals in different types of particles throughout the circuit. The liberation-materials balance data define mineral recoveries; define the behavior of an ore in a concentrator, pilot plant or bench test: and indicate whether recovery improvements are possible and/or feasible.

This paper discusses the results of an investigation carried out in an underground mine to characterize the volatile by-products adsorbed on airborne particulates following the detonation of four common explosives including ANFO. The primary objective of this study was to determine if any organic amine compounds, particularly nitrosamines, and any polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were produced and trapped in the dust that a miner might inhale during the workday. The production of these substances is of great concern because of their suspected carcinogenic nature. The results of the study indicated that a large variety of the by-products are adsorbed on the particulates generated, and thus remain airborne following the detonation of explosives. The major by-products retained by the dust were bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, and aliphatic hydrocarbons with carbon chains ranging from C12 to C28. One explosive, a water gel, produced the polycyclic aromatic compound, trimethylnaphthalene. No nitrosamine compounds were detected.

Introduction Coal preparation plants are continuously losing clean coal in their refuse and contaminating their clean coal product with impurities. This is due to the lack of a system by which the immediate efficiency of the cleaning operation can be determined at any given time. Moreover, the advantage of developing tagging/ tracing techniques would be a reduction in the time and money spent in evaluating the performance of advanced cleaning techniques. Currently, conventional sampling and testing, on-line analyses, and computer information systems are the major tools with which engineers analyze and control the efficiency of processing plants. Conventional sampling and testing is an effective analysis technique but it is slow. On-line analysis provides information on quality parameters rapidly, but these parameters do not provide all of the necessary information. The use of tagged particles in coal preparation plants may provide the necessary link between diagnosis and the application of computers to process control. In this work, a novel technique that uses tagged particles to generate partition data is presented (Leonard et al., 1982). Individually prepared tagged particles are added to the feed and detected in the product or refuse port of specific gravity based processes. Providing that a computer can interpret the output of a detection device and trace particles with predetermined physical properties through the coal preparation plant and that the trace particles actually represent desired raw material, sufficient partition data can be provided for computer analyses and control of processing efficiency. Coal tagging technique The use of tagged particles in coal preparation operations are in the early stages of development. Though there is a brief history of particle tracing in the mineral processing industry (Gardner et al., 1986; Foreman and Amundson, 1976; Poston et al., 1962), the concept has not yet been applied to the analysis and control of processing plant operations. Several methods for tagging coal particles have been identified. These include magnetic, radioactive, and fluorescent techniques. As far as the magnetic tagging of coal particles is concerned, a method has been developed to manufacture synthetic magnetic particles of various sizes and specific gravities. Ideally the synthetic particles would have identical size and density as the coal particles being separated.
