A technique for the synthesis of mineral processing flowsheets from laboratory batch test data is described and examples of the application of the procedure are given. The procedure requires the collection of kinetic data, the optimization of the flotation time in each separation stage, then simulation of the material balance for a continuous circuit.

A rule-based control system was developed for a 7-foot Hydrocone crusher with automatic set regulation, based on operating data collected in the field. When implemented in a plant PLC, the system was found to behave as predicted. Benefits included a significant reduction in the frequency of control actions, the incidence of power overloads, and the standard deviation of feeder speed, whilst maintaining crusher performance.

The effects of harmonic resonance between the supply impedance and power factor correction capacitors on systems with large harmonic sources, such as mine winders, are well known. The similar effects of resonance with cable capacitance are not commonly encountered and, hence, are not always considered in the design of medium-voltage networks. This article considers some of the aspects of resonance between the supply impedance and the cable capacitance and presents one successful approach to solving the problem.

A finite-element algorithm was developed for an axisymmetric heat-transfer problem involving phase change. The finite-element treatment of the phase-change problem was dealt with by using the enthalpy method. The finite-element algorithm was subsequently applied to model the heat exchange between mine ventilation air and frozen ground in the presence of roof bolts in an underground mine with permafrost. This paper analyzes a single bolt in the problem domain with the convection boundaries at the roof level of the mine airway. A short-term study, comprising the evaluation of roof bolting (friction-anchored type), was conducted, and recommendations were made regarding the applicability of roof bolts as a support system for a given thermal condition.

The mine ventilation system of the Henderson Mine provides a case study of designing and maintaining high-quality respirable air in a large underground mine with over 200 units of diesel-powered equipment. This system was designed with concern for minimizing exposure to personnel of siliceous dust, diesel exhaust, smoke, and potential fire hazards while optimizing general environmental air quality throughout the multilevel/multiheading operation. As a relatively new operation, the Henderson Mine incorporates a modern ventilating plant and mine de- sign as well as state-of-the-art technology where appropriate. Two main ventilation shafts approximately 2,300 ft (701 m) in depth (one intake, one exhaust) will handle 1.8 million cfm (850 m3/s) of air circulated throughout 60 miles (97 km) of drifting, providing the ventilation requirements for more than 25,000 diesel horsepower (18,642 kw) underground.

Within the mineral processing industry, a range of grinding conditions exists which include semiautogenous grinding (SAG),rod milling, and conventional ball milling. Each of these mill environments presents a unique environment for grinding media, requiring the application of specific physical and chemical properties for optimum grinding media performance. The environments are characterized by varying degrees and combinations of abrasive, corrosive, and impact wear. An extensive test program has been conducted to determine the extent wear rates vary between these different applications. Test results are related to production results, ball size, and mill operating conditions.

Simulating a ventilation network of an underground mine can help in solving complex ventilation systems with many features, selecting proper fan specifications, location and settings. Early computer systems running simple network simulations were able to provide solutions to the most common and immediate problems regarding underground mine airflow. The more advanced systems available today can perform more sophisticated modeling and simulation of a mine?s ventilation network and present their results in a more understandable and easy to communicate form. This paper presents a ventilation network case study from an underground mine. All aspects of mine ventilation network modeling and simulation are discussed as well as the results from the simulation process. The algorithms and techniques used are thoroughly explained. Some useful guidelines for the application of ventilation network software are also provided in the text.

The effects of bacterial adaptation and partial replacement of leaching solution on the rate and extent of bioleaching reactions of a complex sulfidic gold ore were investigated. The ore was first concentrated by bulk sulfide, flotation, and the sulfide concentrate was treated by bioleaching using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The residues from bioleaching were treated by cyanidation to extract the gold and silver. Bacterial adaptation before bioleaching significantly increased the rate and extent of bioleaching reactions. Similarly, the daily partial replacement of leaching liquor enhanced to a great extent the leaching rate, and in some cases, increases of up to ten fold were observed. Both bacterial adaptation and solution replacement increased the gold recovery by about 2-fold and that of silver by about 1.3-fold. In this work, more than 95% of the gold and more than 98% of the silver could be recovered from the sulfidic gold ore when bioleaching was used ahead of cyanidation, compared with 18.3% and 52.3% by direct cyanidation.

Single-row bench blasts at a reduced scale in the field were used to study the effects of delay time on fragmentation. Nine shots with a spacing of 21 in. and a burden of 15 in. (S/B = 1.4) and nine shots with a spacing of 30 in. and a burden of 15 in. (S/B = 2.0) were completely screened to determine particle size distributions. Delay intervals between holes ranged from 0 to 45 msec, corresponding to effective delay intervals ranging from 0 to 36 msec per foot of burden. Each shot was instrumented with strain and pressure gages to measure in situ blast dynamics and to evaluate interactions between blastholes. Finer overall fragmentation was produced for shots with delay intervals between 1 and 17 msec per foot of burden. Only for shots within this optimum delay range was it observed that the strains induced by stress waves constructively interacted with strains induced by gas pres- sure from an earlier detonated hole. Coarsest fragmentation resulted at delay intervals less than 1 msec/ft, where stress waves from each hole were observed to interact destructively, and at delay intervals greater than 24 msec/ft, where no inter- action between holes was observed, indicating a condition that can be considered as the firing of single hole shots independently.

Six US coals and a crystalline quartz were tested in an instrumented laboratory high-pressure grinding rolls machine equipped with 100-mm-diam. rolls. The machine was choke-fed to maximize the capacity. As expected, the specific capacity decreased with increased grinding pressure for each material tested. Among the six coals, there were significant differences in the critical angle of nip, the effective feed porosity and the variation of strain at the gap relative to the grinding pressure. Although a precise correlation was not obtained, the overall effect of these factors was that, at a given grinding pressure, the specific capacity increased as the Hardgrove grindability index of the coal increased. The relationship between the specific capacity and the grinding pressure for a given coal was independent of feed size down to 150 µm. However, smaller feed sizes produced anomalous results, and the flow within the feed hopper was restricted.

On May 15 and 16, 1999, a mine ventilation survey was performed in the 705-m- (2,312-ft-) deep Cayuga Mine, Cargill Salt Division, Lansing, NY. The purpose of the survey was to develop a numerical model of the existing ventilation system and to perform a computer simulation study for long-term environmental and ventilation planning. Because the natural ventilation pressure (NVP) has significant effects on the ventilation system at the Cayuga Mine, there was a need to assess the NVP acting in the mine. Due to the ventilation arrangements in the Cayuga Mine, the authors decided to use the direct-measuring method to determine the NVP by measuring differential pressure across the automatic fan door. This difference in pressure was measured immediately after the fan was stopped and the automatic door was closed to stop the flow throughout the entire mine. To show seasonal changes in NVP, two additional measurement for NVP were performed, one on Aug. 22, 1999, during the hot (summer) season, and another on Feb. 6, 2000, during the cold (winter) season. The successful exploration for Austin Taylor and Gen. McRae from 1931 to 1940 obscured the fact that I was reaching a period of transition. This was true both in personal and business life. It was probably fortunate that I did not realize how great a change must come after I passed the age of 50. In the personal life of our family the change came when both our children left home to go to school or college. This made home a different place and, because of the absence of the children, Dorothy could devote much of her time and attention to the art she loved so well. She could spend long periods in New York, the center of the nation's art life. Vacations at Tahoe and long pleasure trips made the separation from the children less disturbing but it could never again be the same as it had been in the first 20 years of our marriage. The change In my business life was just as complete, though a little more gradual. While work for Bralorne and General McRae made the "bite" of the Great Depression less painful for us than it was for most consultants and their families, the fact that I was getting older made a new sort of work inevitable. I was 50 years old and the total grew rapidly. Planes and automobiles that made travel easier even in the wilds of Alaska and northern Canada still made it possible for me to look at new prospects, but increasingly often I was exhausted at the end of a day's climb and, if the nature of my work did not change there would soon be no more work. Fortunately work of a new sort came a little at a time. As I became a director of Bralorne and president of its American subsidiaries I had to take on more administrative work, and success of these operations made others want to employ me to help direct policy and value mines. Historically, research organizations have made significant contributions to the development and commercialization of new chemical products for the mining industry and examples of commercial results are cited With the recent demise of research organizations within the mining industry and dynamic changes in the industry, the supporting role of R&D groups has become limited or non-existent. Cat- reduction requirements and new raw-material sources offer future opportunities for R&D organizations to continue their effective participation in the commerical development of new chemical products. Two types of underground tests on three types of shield supports, 2-leg, 4-leg, and chock shield, were con- ducted to measure the horizontal movement of the canopy against the immediate roof. In no friction tests, steel rollers were placed between roof and canopy top, while in friction tests normal direct contact was used. Results indicate that the canopy for 2-leg shields always moves forward during setting, whereas there was no forward movement for 4-leg or chock shields. Based on the test results, a model for active horizontal force was proposed.

The paper contains knowledge that have been achieved when the problem of airflow temperature and humidity changes prediction in mine airways was investigated. The substance of physical processes has been consistently applied. The methods of dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures calculations can be applied in any type of mine airway. The exceptionality of auxiliary ventilated airways is in the original solution of so called losing air flowing when a ventilation pipe is leaky. The combination of aerodynamics and thermodynamics solutions enable to determine climatic conditions on projected workplaces with a sufficient accuracy.

Within the world of mining health and safety, increasing attention is again being given to underground fires and explosions. This paper reviews the effects of open fires in mine entries on the ventilation system, and outlines current methodologies of attempting to control such a fire. The particular hazards of a fuel-rich fire are discussed. There appear to have been no really significant advances made in methods of extinguishing mine entry fires in the last several decades. The final section of the paper introduces research that is investigating the simultaneous production of an inerting, cooling and quenching atmosphere by means of a dense water fog.

The Paranapanema Group was created in February 1996 when a group formed by the Brazilian pension funds acquired four companies dealing with nonferrous metals. The new Paranapanema Group, basically related to the tin and construction business, became the sole Brazilian primary copper producer, the second zinc producer and one of the most important producers of copper products, mainly tubes and fittings. To put together such different companies, managed before by family groups and with different cultures and principles, was and still is a big challenge. The strategy of developing and consolidating it as an homogeneous group is based in three pillars: an increase in production, quality and technological improvements on products and market mix and a permanent cost reduction program, using all the potential synergies founded.
