The problem of the estimation of ore reserves is essentially a simple one to describe. Given a set of sample data, at specified locations within a deposit, how can we estimate the value (or quantity) of ore in unsampled areas. The question may be posed of a whole deposit (global) or it may be more desirable to estimate smaller volumes within the planned mine area, e.g. stopes or blocks (local). Many methods have been evolved to tackle this problem, from hand-contouring of values by the mine geologist to extremely sophisticated geomathematical analysis. The main difficulty with any estimation method in this context is that it is almost impossible to check whether the "predicted" value bears a close relationship with the "actual" value. The only reliable way to decide if an estimation method has "worked" is to test the eventual value of ore against the predicted value. This is, more often than not, impossible - even allowing for the time factor involved. To know the "actual" value of a mined block it has to be sampled intensely, and these values with their positions recorded accurately. Alternatively, blocks may be passed through the concentration process individually and these results recorded. In most producing mines neither of these alternatives are practicable or seen to be-important. Another problem with comparing in-situ (so-called) mineable reserves with production figures is the introduction of many variables into the concentration process -- dilution, wastage, possible stockpiling, mill recoveries and so on.

In this paper, numerical approximation schemes, for solution of the mass transfer problem in mine ventilation have been developed by using three implicit finite difference schemes. Results from these schemes have been compared with the analytical solution for spatial and time increments, using the concept of Root Mean Square error. For implicit finite difference schemes, in general, the modified central difference scheme is better than the two other schemes at lower velocity. Also, at lower air velocities, implicit schemes underpredicted the concentration values. At higher air velocities, the Crank-Nicholson and Laasonen schemes provided better results than the Modified Central Difference scheme.

INTRODUCTION Since the first introduction of explosives into mining operations, safety considerations have prohibited the use of machinery in association with the explosives. Only within the last 25 years has this situation changed appre¬ciably; the closest thing to "machinery" used by a powderman in the "old days" was his wooden tamping stick. With the blackpowder and dynamite used during the first 150 or so years of mining blasts, substituting a drill steel or a metal "spoon" invited serious disaster. With the advent of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives (1950s) and water-gel explosives (1970s) for underground blasting, machinery started to play a large part in blasting procedures. The lower sensitivity of ANFO and water gels allows these prod¬ucts to be loaded in a variety of safe ways. Not only has this meant cost savings in labor and blasting materials, but it has also resulted in whole new mining concepts where the limitations of dynamite previously made those concepts uneconomical, impossible, or excessively risky. Increasingly (totally for some mines), the traditional tamping stick has given way to a variety of pneumatic machines for loading explosives and blasting agents. The resulting blasting operations have become safer, more efficient, less uncomfortable for personnel, and a major step forward in mining technology. ANFO LOADING EQUIPMENT Three basic types of loaders are used for ANFO explosives, these being the pressure-vessel loaders, Venturi loaders, and combination loaders. Pressure-Vessel ANFO Loaders ANFO consists of prilled ammonium nitrate (porous pellets I to 2 mm in diam) and fuel oil in the appro¬priate 94 to 6% blend. The material is fairly dry, pourable, and easily conveyed by an air stream. One device or system for handling (hole loading) ANFO is the pressure-vessel loader. ANFO is dumped into the vessel or "pot," and the vessel then is pres¬surized. The ANFO is conveyed out of the bottom of the vessel into a semiconductive hose that has been inserted into the blasthole. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical pressure-vessel loader in use. Applications: The use of pressure-vessel loaders is widespread in room-and-pillar mines, including salt, potash, trona, lead, and other rubber-tired mines where the heavy pressure vessels can be mounted on a vehicle for transport from face to face. The vessel often is large enough to hold eight or more 23-kg (50-1b) bags of ANFO, so several faces can be loaded before refilling. A computer model called the Quality Compliance Model was developed to optimize the mine planning and sequencing in area coal mining with respect to the limit on pounds of sulfur dioxide per million BTU imposed by regulations. The objective of the model is to maximize the amount of high sulfur coal mined from various benches while meeting the specified compl'ance standards. Given multiple seams and multiple benching operations, the mining sequence from each pit is simulated. The rate of mining is controlled such that the in-pit blending will maximize the usage of high sulfur coal and meet compliance standards. The compliant coal can be stockpiled for usage at a later date, or it can be disassociated. This calculation can be based on any given rate of production, i.e., from as small a unit as a unit train to as large as monthly or yearly production.

Gold processing methods have evolved to such an extent that low grade and complex ores once considered uneconomic are now becoming viable. Constant efforts are underway to innovate technologies in order to improve the efficiencies and cut down the capital and operating costs. The methods are discussed.

Direct observations of intergranular fracture during comminution are very difficult to make. The best indirect method is based on the measurement of interphase area before and after comminution. If intergranular fracture does not occur, the interphase area should be conserved during comminution, but it should decrease if significant amounts of intergranular fracture occur. The interphase area per unit volume can be determined by image analysis from measurements on sections of the unbroken ore and on sections through the particles after comminution. However, the measurements must be corrected for the effects of image resolution on the measured phase and particle perimeters. A correction procedure was developed, and the true interphase perimeter per unit volume was measured before and after comminution in a sample of chromite-serpentinite ore and two samples of Witwatersrand pyritic quartzite. The pyritic quartzite showed no significant evidence of grain- boundary fracture while the chromite-serpentinite showed a significant decrease in interphase area per unit volume of chromite, indicating that intergranular fracture occurred.

1.1 GENERALIZED METHODS OF SUPPRESSING THE INFLOW OF GROUND WATER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS Various methods are used to prevent or minimize the inflow of ground water into underground workings during their excavation. The two most common methods include freezing the saturated rock and grouting using cement, sodium silicate, polyurethane and/or other chemicals. Each of these technologies for combatting the inflow of ground water is effective only under specific hydrogeological conditions. For example, although the freezing of saturated ground is among the more universally adopted methods, it is designed to provide only temporary protection during construction. Before the saturated rock thaws it is necessary to emplace a waterproof liner which is labor intensive, time consuming, and expensive. Consequently, freezing is used only in exceptionally complex hydrogeological conditions, namely in those cases where the water-bearing strata consist of unstable rock or the ground water has an anomalous hydrochemistry. The classical grouting of saturated rock, carried out from the surface or from the face of the underground workings for the purpose of limiting the inflow of ground water during excavation, utilizes both cement and a variety of chemical grouts. Cement grouting has been regarded as the main method of combatting the inflow of ground water in fractured rock throughout the world. In such countries as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Canada, the Republic of South Africa and Great Britain, cement grouting is the main method of reducing the inflow of ground water during the excavation of mine openings. In Great Britain and the FRG, cement grouting has been used in 80% of all shaft excavations. In the Republic of South Africa cement grouting has been used in almost 100% of all the shafts that have been constructed. The installation of grout curtains into permeable water- bearing strata significantly reduces their permeability and increases the rock strength. Grouting has the greatest effect in fractured sandstones, certain well indurated shales, fractured granites, fractured quartzites, and karstic limestones or dolomites. The following principal factors must be considered when assessing the expediency of grouting rock with cement: the geometry of the network of fracture openings, the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the fractured rock, the hydraulic head acting on the water in the rock, and the chemical composition of the ground water. On the basis of the geometry of the fractures and the thickness of each hydrostratigraphic unit, the characteristics of the cement grout are selected. As a rule, the cementing of large fractured zones with high ground water velocities is carried out using inert fillers (sand, mill slag, loam, loess, crushed limestone), special types of cement, setting accelerators, and high cement concentrations in water. Calcium chloride, soda ash, sodium silicate, sodium nitrate, amino alcohols, tin bichloride, trisulphate nitrate, and lumnite are used extensively as the setting accelerators for cement grouts. In the FRG and Poland, special cement injection compounds that embody a mixture of cement and active cement metal salts, water additives and binding substances are being used for the cementing of saturated zones with rapid ground water velocities. These reagents accelerate the rate of structure-forming reactions. In spite of the wide variety of additives used for cement grouts, the effectiveness of the method in large fractures below the water table is either poor or it leads to a very large consumption of cement due to the erosion of the grout through the cracks before it hardens. At the present time, a large number of cement types and brands are being produced by various countries. These variations permit cementing to be employed in a variety of geological conditions. However, both pure cement grout and grouts with fillers constitute unstable systems with a high water loss rate. Therefore during the grouting of finely fractured rock the cement grout's premature loss of a large amount of free water causes its consistency to increase, whereupon the grout solidifies. Consequently, it inadequately penetrates into the fine fractures of the stratum. In addition the high water loss rate in the cement grout causes unreacted cement particles to remain, which greatly reduces the grout hardness and the resulting rock strength characteristics are weakened. As a result, the binding properties of the cement are utilized perhaps up to 60%. The remaining portion is left in the grout as a filler. All these conditions significantly decrease the efficiency of the isolation effort both with respect to strength and cost. In order to expand the cement grouting method, re- search is being conducted to improve the quality of cement grout, to increase its range of application with respect to permeability control, to reduce its water loss rate and to increase its capacity to withstand the erosive and corrosive effects of poor quality ground water. INTRODUCTION In this chapter, the term "down-the-hole drill" (DTH drill) is used as a generic name that encompasses the various trade names and other references such as "downhole drill," "in-the-hole drill," etc. This chapter is limited to a description of DTH drills used in stoping large underground ore bodies. DTH drills differ from conventional drills by virtue of the placement of the drill in the drill string. The DTH drill follows immediately behind the bit into the hole, rather than remaining on the feed as with ordinary drifters. Thus, no energy is dissipated through the steel or couplings, and the penetration rate is nearly constant, regardless of the depth of the hole. Since the drill must operate on compressed air and tolerates only small amounts of water, cuttings are flushed either by air with water-mist injection or by standard mine air with a dust collector at the collar. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT Mine managers have long known the economies enjoyed by quarry and open-pit operators in producing large quantities of ore. The savings are due primarily to the availability of massive equipment, capable of drilling large blastholes to reduce the amount of drilling, increase the fragmentation, reduce secondary blasting, and im¬prove the flow of the product. In an attempt to reduce underground mining costs, various methods are used for long-hole drilling, includ¬ing standard pneumatic percussion drifters and diamond drills. These systems have their shortcomings; percus¬sion drills are limited to small hole sizes and they ex¬perience excessive deviation and significant loss of energy with increased depth. The diamond drills provide deeper and straighter holes, but only at high cost. Both systems suffer from high noise levels, low penetration rates, and poor explosives distribution, among other problems. When the mining companies approached the drill manufacturers for a compact and portable large-hole jumbo for underground use, they specified not more than 1 % deviation on 60 m (200 ft) of vertical hole and a penetration rate of 15 m/h (50 fph). On Dec. 23, 1960, a test unit was placed in service in Montana and met the performance criteria. Though lacking the so¬phisticated features available today, the economies of surface blasting were brought underground. Unfortunately, the first system did not gain immedi¬ate acceptance in the industry. Among the factors con¬tributing to its demise were resistance to change, the need to alter development methods for the ore bodies, and a lack of flexibility in moving the rig from setup to setup and from level to level. In 1972, the mining industry again challenged the drill manufacturers to provide a workable jumbo that would combine compactness, ease of maintenance, relia¬bility, and efficiency, all on a self-propelled chassis. The manufacturers responded by providing improved jumbos, which have been accepted with enthusiasm throughout the mining industry. Today's DTH jumbos are capable of drilling from 100 to 200 mm (4 to 8 in.) diam holes that can be reamed to even larger diameters. The holes can be drilled to depths of 150 m (500 ft), depending upon ground conditions and the capability of the jumbo to retrieve the steel and drill. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical DTH jumbo. APPLICATIONS The uses to which DTH drill jumbos have been put are quite numerous, with new uses being found regularly. For convenience, these uses may be classified as primary blastholes and nonblasting holes. Primary Blastholes The original purpose for the development of the DTH jumbo was for drilling primary blastholes that could be mined by open-stope methods. Prior to the advent of the DTH jumbo, extensive development was required before production drilling could begin. Sub¬levels were required to allow access for column-and-arm stopers or ring/fan jumbos, to the extent necessary based on the effective penetration of the chosen machine. With the DTH jumbo, the mine engineer is able to reduce preproduction time and development costs. How¬ever, the most significant saving results from an im¬proved cost per ton of broken ore in the production phase. To utilize a DTH system, only a top heading and drawpoints are necessary. The top heading can be the width of the ore body with a 3.7-m (12-ft) back. A drop-raise pattern is drilled and shot to begin the stoping operation, providing a free face for subsequent blasting. A typical layout is illustrated in Fig. 2. The advantages of this system include: 1) Drilling and blasting are independent operations, and blasting can be performed at a rate congruous with the mine's ton-per-day capacity. 2) The development layout is simplified. 3) Good explosive distribution is achieved, provid¬ing more uniform fragmentation. 4) Environmental conditions for operators are im¬proved, including improved safety with all work directed downward (not overhead), lower noise levels, little fog, and a reduced dust count. 5) Improved production per manshift. 6) Simplified and easier operator work cycles. 7) Reduced cost per ton of product. 8) Fewer holes lost due to ground shifts. Nonblasting Holes With the introduction of the compact DTH jumbos, other practical uses became apparent, including the drilling of: 1) Holes for sand fill, from level to level and from level to stope. 2) Drain and dewatering holes. 3) Power and communications cable holes.

A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the effects of various kinetic test protocols on sulfate production, NP depletion and time to acidity. Six test protocols were evaluated including standard humidity cells, non-aerated cells, tall cells, shaken cells, simulated precipitation cells, and NP depletion columns. The study indicates that test protocols which disrupt the oxidizing environment, such as extreme wetting and drying cycles, shaking the cells, or the high addition of acidic water will create an unnatural environment that affect the results. Trickle leach and non-aerated test protocols create an oxidizing environment that more closely represents field conditions and are therefore recommended.

Combustion synthesis, or self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), reaction systems are discussed with respect to thermodynamics and kinetics. In particular, the effect of the process parameters, e.g. particle size, [All] ignition and combustion temperatures, on these self-sustaining reactions is discussed. Combustion theory is used to investigate the effect of the overall actuation energy of the SHS reaction on the combustion front propagation rate and in obtaining a clearer understanding of the transition from stable to unstable propagation. Finally, examples of the application of combustion synthesis to advanced materials processes are made, in particular the synthesis of Ni-Ti-X intermetallic shape memory alloys, TiC-AI2O3 and ZrB2-AI203 ceramic composite materials.

Diesel-powered underground mining equipment is generally accepted as the most productive, safest, and most efficient equipment used in underground mining operations. Widespread application of this equipment to underground mining is restricted, however, largely because of the difficulty of controlling the diesel engine exhaust emissions. This paper briefly examines control devices currently available for underground application, and also discusses the theory and mechanics of controlling diesel emissions with particulate traps and filters.

Over the past several years, Newmont Gold Company (previously Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corporation) developed a new technology for the flotation of refractory auriferous sulfide minerals which is referred to as the N2TEC flotation process. Starting in April 1997, the first commercial flotation plant utilizing N2TEC technology was successfully commissioned at the Lone Tree Mine near Valmy, Nevada. The Lone Tree flotation plant was designed to process 4,085 mt/d of ore producing 494 mt/d of sulfide concentrate. A flotation tails leach CIP circuit was added to recover cyanide-soluble gold from the flotation tails. A portion of the flotation concentrate is blended with whole ore feed to the Lone Tree autoclave, up to the limit imposed by the current oxygen plant capacity. The remainder of the concentrate is shipped to either the Twin Creeks autoclaves or the Carlin roaster for subsequent oxidation and gold extraction. This paper discusses the results achieved in the commercial flotation plant compared to pilot plant testing and engineering design flotation modeling. Capital and operating cost information are also presented.

Because the nickel contained in lateritic nickel ores does not occur in an identifiable mineral, it is generally accepted that these ores are not amenable to beneficiation. For this reason, such ores are either directly smelted or leached to extract the nickel. In this paper, a process for enriching the nickel content of the lateritic nickel-bearing chromite overburden, normally a waste material generated during chromite mining, is described. In this flotation process, a nickel preconcentrate containing >1.1% Ni was obtained from material containing as little as 0.36% nickel. An empirical relationship was developed to predict the grade of nickel that can be obtained.

Relatively simple techniques have been developed which enable the electrochemistry of sulfide minerals to be studied with particles varying in size from above 100 pm to less than 1 pm. Both oxidative and reductive processes have been studied wing the minerals pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite. It has been shown that it is possible to completely oxidise or reduce the minerals during a single voltammetic sweep. The resulting voltammogram produces peaks which are characteristic of each mineral and can be used to qualitatively identify the minerals. In the case of chalcopyrite, it has been demonstrated that the charge involved in the anodic oxidation can be quantitatively related to the amount of copper dissolved. Quantitative information can be obtained using peak fitting techniques. Interesting differences in the behaviour of the minerals in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids have been observed, particularly in the case of pyrite for which a second major peak is obtained which has been attributed to the oxidation of elemental sulfur in the presence of chloride ions. The technique offers the possibility of providing mineralogical information of individual particles based on an electrochemical voltammetic finger print.

Flotation circuits of a range of complexity are in use for a large number of ores. Since each ore is different and end-product quality requirements are not necessarily the same, circuit configurations of varying complexity are designed. How- ever, certain basic types of circuit configurations can be identified based upon the flotation behavior of the ores. These basic types can be combined to develop the specific f lowsheet configurations for a given ore. This chapter begins with a brief discussion of basic flowsheet configurations. Examples of the flowsheet configurations for a number of specific ores bearing different minerals are then described.

The influence of passageway fires on ventilation flows was investigated in three horizontal fire tunnel s: 1. a laboratory-scale fire tunnel network, 2. a small-scale fire-plume tunnel, and 3. a large- scale simulated mine gallery. Wood was used in the first and third tunnel and gas-burners were used in the second one to generate passageway fires. Experimental measurements included gas mass flow rate, velocity, temperature and pressure in the passageways and exhaust fans. The overall and local effects of the fires were investigated by comparing these measurements obtained before and during the fires. Results show that a passageway fire essentially increases the flow resistances of the passageways of a tunnel flow network by virtue of volatile fuel mass injection and high combustion temperatures. The ventilation air flow rate is consequently throttled to lower values than that before the fire. At severe throttling, reverse flow occurs. Conditions for reverse flow are characterized by two Froude numbers based on gas velocity and density upstream of the fire, and height of the passageway. The Froude numbers and the characteristics of the passageway fire are necessary to analyze mine ventilation/fire interaction and to predict mine ventilation patterns during fires.

Groundwater inflow and impacts have become major aspects in the permitting and operation of many gold mines. First, the hydrothermal or placer genesis of many of the orebodies being investigated or produced today almost guarantees that mines will be "wet", involving groundwater control as part of operations. Second, the style of ore deposition a1 so often involves a1teration of the host rock, resulting in relatively weak, low permeabi1ity materials that require extensive groundwater pressure control for stable mining. Third, the location of many mines in arid areas guarantees that impacts on water resources will be matters of key focus during permitting and operation. However, groundwater control and protection is a technically difficult area and often involves managerial decisions and activities that do not fit comfortably into traditional mining. In an attempt to overcome some of these difficulties, this paper provides a guide to mine managers and hydrologists as to appropriate strategies for designing, setting up, operating, and evaluating groundwater programs at gold mines that get the job done and are cost effective.

Gold mineralization at the Mercur Mine was controlled primarily by structure and secondarily by lithology in Mississippian-age sedimentary rocks. Gold was localized where Sevier-age high angle northeast-striking faults are intersected by younger northwest-striking fault zones. The Lulu Graben is a northeast- striking fault zone composed of a south-dipping master fault coupled with subsidiary or antithetic faults. The Twist Fault zone, a sinuous, low-displacement , north-striking zone of fracturing, bisects the graben. Large- tonnage disseminated ore bodies formed east of the Twist Fault zone within silty, thin-bedded, bioclastic carbonates. West of the Twist Fault zone, gold was restricted to rock near peripheral faults surrounding a subvertical collapsed pipe developed within the graben. An overlying thick carbonaceous shale capped the ore zone. Presence of abundant limited- displacement faulting and of hydrothermal jasperoid is associated with cartonate-hosted disseminated gold. Conversely, increased fault displacement and widespread brecciation are associated with reduced dissemination of gold into normally receptive carbonates.

Inflation has received much attention due to its effect on capital budgeting, associated cost overruns, and declining real profits. This study focuses on the effects of inflation on the evaluation of a mining investment and the estimation of a mining project's revenues. The study indicates that the best method for estimating future returns is the fore- cast dollar scheme. In this scheme, the metal price was held constant, and the operating costs were "inflated" along a historical regression line. The conclusion was reached by comparing the "actual" performance of a 3000 tpd (tonnes per day) lead mine model with 'its estimated performance during four time periods (1950-1960, 1955-1965, 1960-1970, 1965-1975). The individual data files for each time period and estimating method (6 files by 4 time periods) were pro- cessed by a suite of cash flow computational and investment analysis sub- routines. The analysis presumed that the mine was part of a large corporation which could utilize the expensed, development and exploration costs and any investment tax credits, in the year that they were incurred.

[show of hands] A considerable number-more than about half the room. Of those plans, how many of them do you consider as meeting your needs and being successful? [show of hands, far fewer, general audience laughter] You have all at least heard the word "gainsharing." Some of you undoubtedly aren't quite sure what gainsharing is, while others obviously have gainsharing plans in place and are looking for ways to improve them. In the short time I have now I'll be able to give you a precursory look at gainsharing and some brief ideas on where to look to improve your current plans. Over the years, I've found that it is often best to explain gainsharing by comparing it to other forms of employee compensation
