INTRODUCTION Mining activity and basic geometry of open pit mines represent major obstacles in geotechnical mapping. Mining creates a constantly changing topographic base which may require corresponding updates of field sheets before mapping can proceed. The rapid pace of mining operations may also threaten removal of important geologic and engineering features before adequate base maps and surveyed control can be established. Maintaining such control during the mapping process is yet another complication. In addition, basic geometry yields nearly vertical outcrops. Access required for direct observation and measurement, essential to conventional plane table or Brunton techniques, may be impossible on such surfaces. Also, nearly vertical surfaces appear fore- shortened in plan view. This reduction in area provides little room for recording geotechnical detail. The difficulties encountered in open pit mapping can be substantially reduced by utilizing a modified form of plane table photogrammetry. This technique employs photographs taken from the ground as the base upon which details are recorded. The information is later transferred to plan maps using the plane table principal of location by intersection (Davis and Foote, 1953). Any change in topography can be accommodated by simply taking additional photographs. Proper spatial representation in plan view can be determined later when updated maps and surveyed control are available. In addition, horizontal photographs from the ground portray vertical surfaces as they are normally viewed thus providing maximum area for recording details. Any detail which can be identified on the photograph can be located correctly even though the actual feature is physically inaccessible. The technique presented in this paper was developed by the author for special applications at Kennecott's Bingham operation in 1970. The procedure was rapidly adopted for general use and has proven to be a practical tool for detailed investigation of potentially unstable areas (Zavodni and McCarter, 1976) and routine geological mapping (Richardson, 1975). Major advantages, other than those mentioned above, include: The speed and accuracy are greater than for conventional plane table or Brunton methods. The photo- graph represents a view from a station at some distance from the area being mapped. This vantage point allows evaluation of possible continuity of structures from one level to another which may not be evident at close range. To generate a most profitable, ultimate pit limit is generally the first step in mine design. This paper presents a new graph theory oriented, optimum ultimate pit limit design algorithm which will maximize the total undiscounted net profit. This algorithm performs much better than the well known Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm, in terms of the reduction in computation time and computer memory requirements. This algorithm operates on many directed trees in a graph, where each vertex in a tree represents a block in the mine model. The formation of each directed tree is based more on the ore-waste support concept than the geometry constraints alone. The general procedures of the algorithm, programming considerations and two case study results are discussed in the paper.

A comprehensive hydrologic study was completed far the waste rock dump at Equity Silver Mine, BC. Characterization of the hydrologic system included geologic structure. topography, surface hydrology and groundwater systems. The results of the study conclude that the cover system is restricting net infiltration to approximately 5%. However, significant discharge continues to occur from the perimeter of the dump. A three dimensional seepage analysis was carried out to illustrate the influence of groundwater discharge associated with the regional topography and geologic structures. The results of the modelling program show that groundwater discharge occurs from the waste rock dumps when high recharge rates are specified for the surrounding topography- This groundwater discharge strongly influenced by the high hydraulic conductivity assumed far the fractured bedrock. The modelling results are considered preliminary and field drilling and piezometer installation is being conducted to determine the groundwater regime in the vicinity of the waste rock dump.

Described is the application of high- intensity magnetic separation throughout the spectrum of industrial minerals. Performed either wet or dry, the separation has application in both the recovery and concentration of value minerals and in removing deleterious mineral constituents. The various types of magnetic separators along with the design and operating parameters relative to separation response are characterized. The characteristics of specific minerals to magnetic collection and the production of high-grade concentrates are described. Laboratory, pilot-scale, and plant studies carried out on a variety of industrial minerals have demonstrated the effectiveness of magnetic separation as either a primary or a secondary unit operation to achieve product quality.

It is well known that the density and viscosity of a mill pulp have optimum levels for grinding efficiency, and sophisticated control loops are employed to control pulp density in industry. However, these control loops rely on a number of plant measurements, and often the input data will not permit effective determination and control of the mill pulp density. The use of a single remote pulp density measurement has obvious advantages, and it is suggested and demonstrated for laboratory batch grinding that mill noise measurements can indicate the effective density of the mill pulp. In addition, the mill noise is shown to indicate the actual effective pulp viscosity in the mill and hence permit the identification of the dynamic rheological regime existing in the mill. It is demonstrated that mill noise increases with grind time and, at any given grind time, with increasing pulp density in the pseudoplastic range. This increase in mill noise level with pulp density is interpreted as indicating a decreasing pulp viscosity. The results show that the transition from dilatant to pseudoplastic conditions within the mill, with increasing pulp density, can be identified by this increase in mill noise. When the pseudoplastic pulp started to exhibit yield characteris- tics, the mill noise fell dramatically. The technique of mill noise analysis is then used to investigate the effect of a grinding additive on the batch grinding of two ores. With a magnetite ore, the additive was shown to increase the mill noise, and hence decrease the pulp viscosity, in the pseudoplastic region and to increase the effective grinding. The molybdenite ore, however, did not show significant noise level changes and did not show improved grinding efficiency.

14.1 INTRODUCTION From the time the last recoverable gold is extracted from ore on a heap leach, the ore - now spent ore - changes from being the resource, indeed the raison d'etre of the operator, to a potential liability. The spent ore contains process chemicals and constituents leached from the ore both in the interstitial pore water in the heap and on the surfaces of spent ore. If these chemical species were released to the environment, it could have a potential impact on the quality of both surface water and groundwater resources. Accordingly, the spent ore must be left in a condition where it does not present a potential environmental liability. This can be accomplished either on a decommissioned pad or, if the heap leach is operated as a load/unload scheme, in a waste facility. In general, the residual cyanide level in the spent ore is the perceived controlling factor when determining whether the leached material is suitable for abandonment. Regulatory authorities set permit conditions for heap leach abandonment in terms of residual cyanide levels, for example, Smith and Struhsacker (1987). This chapter discusses cyanide degradation and methods for detoxifying a heap leach in order to meet regulatory limits/permit conditions for abandonment. Cyanide degradation and detoxification by "natural" processes are described initially, based on the chemistry and geochemistry discussed in Chapter 13. This leads to a review of chemical treatment processes for detoxification of spent ore. The advantages and apparent disadvantages are then appraised. 14.2 NATURAL DEGRADATION AND DETOXIFICATION For the purposes of discussion, "natural" detoxification processes can be divided into two alternatives: • Passive abandonment (the so-called "do nothing" option); and • Water In the first alternative, the spent ore is merely left on the leach pad to age; the second alternative involves the flushing of the spent ore with water.

In spite of extensive research and accumulated experience from mining operations, appropriate coal strength values for pillar design remain debatable. Coal strengths determined in the laboratory on standardized samples vary widely among various coal seams with poor repeatability. Penetrometric in situ strength testing obtains multiple measurements at multiple horizons within the coal seam to provide a strength profile. Alliance Coal has used that method in many of its mines for pillar design. Pillars in these mines perform well. This paper presents a series of case studies and discussion of issues related to coal pillar design. The analysis demonstrates that the proposed default in situ strength of 900 psi is appropriate when no other data exist. However, in the case of appropriate strength measurements combined with analysis of pillar structural composition, differing values can be used successfully. In areas where the penetrometric derived in situ strength is greater than the standard 900 psi in situ strength, reserve recovery has been optimized as required by law without compromising safety.

John C. Greenway was responsible for much of my success in the seven years from what I called the end of my apprenticeship in exploration until I entered the Army in World War I. I first met Green- way on my return from Promontorio and, as he was replacing Powell, he was to be my boss. Even at first glance you couldn't help liking and trusting him. He was tall, well built, and erect-an old Yale athlete. After college he became a captain in the Rough Riders and a friend of Theodore Roosevelt, distinguishing himself in the Cuban campaign. He made good friends in all ranks of the Rough Riders, some later becoming leaders of industry and others following Greenway where-ever he went. After the Spanish War Greenway worked for iron mining companies around the Great Lakes and when the directors decided that Calumet and Arizona needed a new manager the ones who were also prominent in Oliver Iron Mining Co. selected Greenway It was a lucky choice for Greenway and for me. He became the best manager among those who ran the big copper mines He was open-minded in encouraging discussion and even opposition-until he made up his mind. Then, in military fashion, everyone must follow his decision without question. I think this is an essential of good management. Unfortunately a few did not feel this way and they had to leave. It was characteristic of those times that respect for the boss was so great that in the 16 years in which he was one of my best friends I, like all under him, always called him "Mr. Greenway." Soon after he arrived Greenway asked the leading mine operators in the southwest, Dr. Louis D. Ricketts and James S. Douglas, son of the Dr. James Douglas who had made Phelps Dodge great, to do special work for Calumet and Arizona. I found later that the object of the study was to determine the terms on which the half-dozen Warren District properties of Calumet and Arizona were to be joined in one

Various seam conditions had been examined during longwall production at RAG German hard coal mines. Based on the field data a prediction method was developed considering separation planes as influencing factors for roof falls at the face. The characteristics, orientation, and density of separation are important factors on the occurrence of roof falls. In addition to geological influences, the performance parameters and geometry of support must be considered and optimized for the prediction and prevention of roof falls in a longwall face. Based on detailed macro- and microscopic investigations of e coal seams considering various ranks of carbonization, the origin and characteristics of separation planes are determined and a strata-specific influence on roof fall is interpreted. It was assessed that the coal face fracturing and displacement caused by the stress depend on the floor and roof strata conditions due to activation of the existing separation planes. Field studies are shown giving an idea of influences by advance rates of the longwall face, support delay and hydraulic pressure to the roof control in longwall faces in depth of more than 3000 ft. The analysis includes the application of specific software developed for longwall roof fall prediction as a result of a European research project. The software allows a laminar graphic display of roof fall probability, which is used for recognition of risk areas and risk management.

Biohydrometallurgica1 processes in the areas of coal desulfurization (Hoffman, M.R., et al., 1981) and recovery of metals from metal sulfide ores (Lundgren, D.G. and Malouf E.E., 1983) are well known. In addition other areas of potential interest to the mining industries have been outlined (Spisak, J.F., 1979). For instance, scientists involved in this interdisciplinary field have endeavored to apply microorganisms to the problem of effluent sulfate disposal. This chapter assesses the feasibility of utilizing a particular two stage anaerobic microbial process to convert effluent sulfate to orthorhombic sulfur. Strong emphasis is given to the possibility of substituting this bioprocess for alternative gypsum synthesis and disposal methodologies commonly practiced by companies which emphasize sulfuric acid or ammonium sulfate leaching processes.

In the last five years Eldorado Resources Ltd. (ERL) has undergone a major expansion and modernization of its uranium refining and conversion plants. A new refinery for processing yellow cake to UO3 was constructed at Blind River in northern Ontario and started up in 1985. Its rated capacity is 18,000 t/a uranium as UO3. At Port Hope, Ontario, ERL's new UF6 conversion plant has been constructed. This plant started up in 1984. It utilizes the novel, wet-way process to produce UF4 and gives the company a UF6 production capacity of 14,500 t/a U. Also at Port Hope is Eldorado's ceramic UO2 powder production facility, commissioned in late 1980. It has a capacity of 1700 t/a uranium as UO8. With the completion of these capital projects, Eldorado has the largest and most up-to-date refining and conversion facilities in the western world. This paper reviews the refining process and process design. The methodology used to start up the Blind River plant is described as are some startup difficulties, solutions that were developed, and the resultant current operation.

Introduction The US coal mining industry is in the midst of a serious economic crisis. To overcome increased operating costs, operators must take advantage of technological advancements in mining systems and equipment. A relatively new concept available to underground operators is that of extending the cutting depth for continuous mining machines (continuous miners). This system is referred to as deep-cut mining, and may be described as mining cuts to depths greater than the standard 6 m (20 ft). Productivity is increased through the reduction in continuous miner tram time since the machine stays longer in each working face. To successfully implement a deep-cut mining system, three problems must be overcome: Exposing personnel to unsupported roof, methane removal, and controlling respirable dust. Remote control cutting The solution to the unsupported roof problem is remote control. Recent advances in remote operation, especially in radio remote controls, have resulted in what is generally accepted as a safe and reliable tool. By installing remote control on the continuous miner, the operator and helper can now be stationed in a supported area. This allows for improved visibility while cutting coal. With this in mind, the limiting factor now becomes the position of the haulage equipment operator. North River No. 1 uses Joy 21SC shuttle cars and Jeffrey 4110 diesel ramcars. These cars are pulled against the bumper of the continuous miner. Thirteen meters (43 ft) can be cut with the shuttle car and 14 m (45 ft) with the Ramcar before the operator of the car is inby permanent supports. By loading away from the bumper, about 1.5 m (5 ft) can be added, bringing total cut depths up to 14.5 and 15 m (48 and 50 ft), respectively. Methane removal The second problem involves methane removal, and the line curtain-to-face distance. In other words, how to maintain the line curtain to allow sufficient ventilation to remove methane and not expose workers to unsupported roof. The solution, in most cases, is to use a blowing-type ventilation system. Unlike the exhausting system that, to be effective, must be installed within 3 m (10 ft) of the working face, the blowing system can be effective at greater distances from the face. Numerous studies have documented the advantages of a blowing-type ventilation system over an exhausting system. Furthermore, a blowing system can be significantly improved by in¬creasing the velocity of the air delivered without increasing the volume of air. With this greater ventilation efficiency, it is possible to secure ventilation plan approval from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for a greater curtain set-back distance. This eliminates the need for personnel to travel inby permanent supports to extend the face brattice. The distance from the face MSHA will approve, however, is on a mine-by-mine basis. MSHA will evaluate the particular mine's face methane liberation rates, along with the specific proposals regarding face ventilation volumes and velocities. Dust control The third problem is controlling respirable dust. This is actually a result of the solution to the second problem. In the blowing system, while mining on the slab cut, both the continuous miner and haulage units are located on the dusty side of the line curtain (Fig. 1). In the early 1970s, underground operators virtually abandoned this system, in order to comply with the 2 mg/m3 (0.87 gr per cu ft) federal dust standards. Lithium-bearing lepidolites from three deposits in the province of Goias, Brazil, were investigated to determine whether there is a correlution between the lithium content of the mineral and the color of lepidolite and associated tourmaline. Such a correlation can be a useful guide to field geologists for outlining high-grade lithium ore zones. It was found that mauve-pink lepidolite associated with pink tour-maline, and brownish lepidolite associated with black tourmaline have high lithium contents, but that the color of lepidolite is not due to lithium. The pink color of lepidolite and tourmaline is likely due to Mn3+, and the brownish tint of lepidolite and black color of tourmaline to Fe3+. Lepidolites appear to be lithium- rich when the lepidolite and associated tourmaline contain relatively high amounts of Mn3+ and/or Fe3+.

Three water-spray ventilation systems were tested to determine their effectiveness in diluting methane at a room and pillar coal mine face. These systems were: the shrouded nozzle, the spray fan, and the conventional nozzle system that is normally supplied with continuous miners. The testing was carried out in two stages. The air-moving capacities of the nozzles were first evaluated in a duct. The duct tests showed that: (1) the volume of air moved by the nozzle is controlled by the type of nozzle, the space around it, and its location relative to the duct wall; (2) the spray fan nozzles or the shrouded nozzles are both capable of moving air quantities up to 6400 cfm (3.02 m3/s); and (3) when the shroud was removed from around the shrouded nozzle, its bare nozzle moved between 9 and 65 percent more air. In the second stage of testing, a full-scale evaluation of the three systems was conducted. The three spray systems were mounted on a continuous miner which was positioned in an aboveground simulated mine entry. The simulated face tests gave the following results: (1) the standard nozzle system, which is mounted on the front end of the miner, is inadequate for diluting methane; (2) under the best testing conditions (lowest methane emission rate, highest primary ventilation airflow, and closest brattice set back), the slight improvement given by either the shrouded system or the spray fan is the same; and (3) under the worst testing conditions (highest methane emission rate, least primary ventilation airflow, and farthest brattice set back), the spray fan gave superior performance.

Traditional methods for mine waste management produces two waste streams and the construction of separate disposal facilities. Tailings impoundment design is usually controlled by physical stability problems. Alternatively. the waste rock offers high stability characteristics but hydraulic properties that create ideal conditions for oxidation. The problem of oxidation is significantly reduced for tailings due to a fine texture that augments water saturation. This paper introduces concepts for the co-disposal of tailings with waste rock and evaluates the physical behaviour of an integrated waste system. 'he potential benefits of co-disposal are shown for a typical mine such as Equity Silver.

The past few years have seen the introduction of mini-computers on an increasing scale at collieries in the British coal industry. These are being used for controlling underground transport systems, coal preparation plants and fixed plant (pumps etc.); and for monitoring the mine environment and face operations.. A separate mini-computer (termed a primary computer) is dedicated to each of these functions. The overall system under which these computers operate is a common one which is applicable at all collieries. The information collected by the primary computers, other than that required for immediate control, will be fed to a secondary computer for analysis and processing. This overall concept, called MINOS. (MINe Operating System) is being developed by the National Coal Board's Mining Research and Development Establishment (M.R.D.E.). Eventually most of the data required by the system will be captured automatically. For example, the fact that a delay has occurred on a face, together with the duration of that delay, will be detected automatically via transducers link linked to a primary computer. However, the reason for that delay will, in all likelihood, have to be recorded manually. Such a system is currently under development with the first trial installations now being made.

INTRODUCTION Dense medium processes have been used to separate coal and ores for over a hundred years. In fact Sir Henry Bessemer first patented a process in 1858. In recent years, their importance relative to other gravity dependent processes has increased. This is particularly true in the coal industry where over 60% of all preparation plants operating in 1984 in North America (1) contained either dense medium vessel or cyclone circuits. In addition, the stringent product quality demands of the consumer, together with increases in mining costs, dictate that the cleaning circuits be both predictable and efficient. Dense medium systems are the most predictable and efficient of all gravity- dependent processes. The majority of the text of this chapter will be concerned with dense medium applications as they relate to the coal industry. However, the techniques and calculation procedures can be applied, in general, to all non-coal minerals (such as diamonds, marginal iron and lead-zinc ores and gravel) which take advantage of a difference in specific gravity between the saleable product and the reject. The object in dense medium cleaning is to produce a liquid whose effective specific gravity is between that of the concentrate and the reject. In which case the lighter product will float to the surface and the heavier product will sink to the bottom. Unfortunately, this simple process becomes complicated by the following practical necessities: (a) collecting and removing the float and sink products from the medium without disturbing the free settling effects; (b) maintaining and controlling the specific gravity of the medium; (c) separating and reclaiming the medium once the products have left the separating vessel; and (d) separating finer sized particles which take longer to fall through the dense, and often viscous, medium. As a result of the last issue (item d) two main types of dense medium separators have evolved: dense medium vessels and dense medium cyclones. Dense medium vessels are essentially large baths through which the dense medium flows at a relatively slow velocity. The lighter products float to the surface and are carried out of the vessel by the medium flow. The heavier products sink to the bottom of the vessel and are physically transported out either by means of a conveyor (usually a chain conveyor) or a rotating, lifting arrangement (Figure 1). This paper shows how the efficiencies of size-reduction processes depend on the mode of particle constraint and energy transfer within the comminution device: namely, whether the process consists of single-particle loading, confined-particle-bed comminution or loose- (unconstrained-) particle grinding. The relative efficiency of single-particle comminution, ball-mill grinding and particle-bed comminution in the recently invented high-pressure roll mill is evaluated by making use of the self-preserving nature of the size distributions of comminuted products. The highest energy efficiency can be achieved by utilizing a hybrid two-stage system in which the material is first ground in the high-pressure roll mill and then the ball mill.

The Building Products Company is Phoenix based and owned by Mission Clay products of California. Building Products is the only manufacturer of vitrified clay pipe in Arizona. The marketing area includes Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and California. Building Products, promoted by Arizona Public Service, was formed in 1970. Raw-materials prospecting was undertaken for 2 years, after which a $5-million plant was built. Initially, a satisfactory vitrified product could not be made with the raw materials then in hand. Subsequent prospecting and testing led to an acceptable raw-materials mix. Testing to upgrade the final product is a continuing process. The basic raw-materials supply must be adequate, secure, and capable of sustaining close tolerances in the final product. These needs are met by mining four geologic materials at three different localities: (1) refractory aluminous shales (two horizons-one pit) Colorado Plateau Province (Mogollon Rim); (2) less refractory aluminous materials from late Cenozoic lacustrine materials near Dewey in the Transition Zone (TZ); and (3) Precam¬brian "slate" from near New River along the southern edge of the TZ. Other additives include grog (ground-up, broken pipe) and barium carbonate that ties up what gypsum there is. Calcium magnesium carbonates are deleterious components that are minimized by careful selection of the mined products. The raw materials are blended and mixed, ground to 12 mesh, mixed in a pug mill, depleted of air, extruded into pipe ranging from 6 inches to 42 inches in diameter, transported to a hot-air drying room, fork-lifted to an appropriate kiln, and fired at a 1900-2000° F range. The "Rim" kaolinitic shales, being the most refractory ingredient, stabilize the pipe during the firing process. They are very plastic, and therefore facilitate extrusion. The Dewey clay fuses at a low temperature and forms an impervious glasslike binder. It also is plastic. The "slate" forms platy particles that tend to orient themselves during laminar flow. This provides strength for both the green and dried product. It doesn't absorb water, which helps the drying process. Grog remains stable during firing, and therefore helps to control shrinkage. The development of appropriate raw materials and proper mixtures has been done empirically.

A new separator, known as the Hydrofloat cell, has been developed to overcome limitations of traditional flotation cells in recovering coarse particles. In this process, small air bubbles are introduced into a hindered "teeter" bed of fluidized solids to create light bubble-particle aggregates that can be separated based on differences in density. Laboratory tests conducted with coarse phosphate feeds indicate that the Hydrofloat cell is capable of increasing BPL recoveries by nearly 20% over conventional flotation methods. Based on these encouraging results, a pilot-scale Hydrofloat cell was fabricated and installed at a central Florida phosphate plant. Test data collected using the pilot-scale unit suggest that the BPL recovery of the plus 35 mesh plant feed can be increased by more than 40% through the application of this new technology. This improvement is particularly beneficial due to the very high grade (-73% BPL) of the plus 16 mesh particles in the Hydrofloat concentrate. This article describes the theoretical basis for the development of the Hydrofloat cell and provides an overview of recent laboratory and pilot-scale test results.
