Minerals for electronic and optical uses divide easily into two sections: 1) quartz and 2) minerals other than quartz. QUARTZ The properties of quartz crystal that make it useful for radio communications were discovered in 1918. Since that time, an in¬dustry for the mining and processing of natural quartz crystal has grown, matured, and been almost entirely replaced by new tech¬nology. The new technology still involves quartz crystal, but ma¬terial that is grown rather than mined. An economic summary of the commercial growing of quartz crystals has a place in a handbook directed to the mineral engi¬neering industry because quartz crystals have long been an impor¬tant commercial mineral, and the raw material for cultured quartz - ¬that is to say, quartz crystals grown through the ingenuity of man - is still natural quartz. Nearly all the natural crystals that have been used for elec¬tronics and optics came from Brazil. The larger pieces which met rigorous standards of quality were used for electronic and, to a lesser extent, optical components. Smaller pieces and fragments were used for vitreous silica. The need for high quality material in quantity led to US government sponsored research and exploration programs in the 1940s. No deposits meeting the very rigid requirements for electronic-grade quartz were found, but other projects resulted in the development of a process for the factory growth of beautiful crystals of prescribed shape, size, and quality. Domestic deposits of appropriate quality were identified to use as raw materials for the quartz culturing process. The development of the cultured quartz crystal illustrates the success that technology can have in adapting a product of the mine to increasingly sophisticated uses. A remarkable achievement per¬haps, but foreshadowed by experiments by Giorgio Spezia (1908), an Italian geologist studying the relative effects of temperature and alkaline environment on the solubility of quartz. Modem radio equipment is most often controlled as to fre¬quency by the presence in the circuit of a separately added crystal¬ - the 1918 discovery responsible for the existence and growth of the quartz industry. The crystal is quartz, but this component is a carefully oriented and prepared slice from a crystal, but not a crystal as recognized by a rock hound or seen in a museum. How quartz operates to control frequencies is not a proper subject for a handbook on industrial minerals, and references should be consulted (Cady, 1964, Mason, 1964). Quartz belongs to a class of materials called dielectrics: those that do not conduct an electric current but permit electric fields to exist and act across them. Quartz shows the piezoelectric effect, which means that when a quartz plate is mechanically deformed against its natural stiffness, one of its surfaces becomes negatively charged, the other positively charged. When the plate is released quickly from the stress, the charges disappear as the plate regains its original shape, but because of mechanical momentum the plate deforms in the opposite direction (to a lesser amount) and the surfaces correspondingly become charged in the opposite direction. By thinly coating the two surfaces with metal and attaching flexible wires, these charges can be brought into an electronic circuit. If the surfaces are suddenly electrically charged by movement of current through the wires, the converse piezoelectric effect occurs and the plate deforms. Carry the thought further and it is realized that an alternating current flowing through the wires responds to the mechanical oscillation. By controlling the thickness of the plate, its mechanical vibration frequency can be varied through a wide range. One type of quartz plate, the AT-cut, has a precisely defined orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the crystal and vibrates on a microscopic scale much as a book would deform when placed flat on a table and the top cover moved parallel back and forth with the hand. At least 17 other orientations have been studied, some of which have preferred uses in various applications (Cady, 1964). The quartz crystal industry is composed of three main segments (excluding fused quartz and quartz used for optical purposes): 1. Natural electronic-grade quartz crystals. Mined quartz suitable for fabrication into piezoelectric units. Zlobik (1981a) esti¬mated the waste to ore ratio at 1:1000 to 1000 000, depending upon the deposit. 2. Lasca. Mined quartz usable as feedstock in the production of cultured quartz. Approximately 0.63 kg of lasca are required to produce 0.45 kg of cultured quartz. 3. Cultured quartz. Cultured quartz is produced from lasca feed¬stock in a process of crystal growth in an autoclave under conditions of heat, pressure, and time. It is estimated that 0.45 kg of cultured quartz is equivalent to 1.4 to 4.5 kg of natural quartz crystal in yield of commercial quartz suitable for slicing into piezoelectric units. 2001, the New Jersey Transit Authority commissioned the JV Merco-Obayashi with the rehabilitation contract of the approximately 130-year-old, 4,200 ft long, partially brick- lined Bergen North Tunnel. The contract entailed the tunnel enlargement, shotcrete and rock dowels initial support according to the NATM, a waterproofing system, tunnel drainage and a cast-in-place concrete lining. The rock conditions encountered required design adaptations and significant modifications of the initial tunnel support. Flexibility, skill and extensive experience on the Authority’s and Contractor’s side finally lead to a success. This paper describes the operations and design modifications carried out.

It doesn't take any special acumen to note that US engineering and construction firms are busier than ever with mining projects in this mineral conscious world. This special issue of Mining Engineering takes a look at E&C companies-their expanding role, their special capabilities, and their challenges and problems. ME sent a questionnaire to a representative sample of E&C firms. Information was sought about officers, ownership, and amount of business. ME also asked about types of projects and commodities dealt in as well as market distribution and forms of payment. The accomnanying charts show how the 17 responding E&C firms answered these and other questions. Other ME survey questions, and a review of company literature, yielded information about financing techniques and special challenges for E&C firms. Insights were gained concerning government impacts, customer-generated problems, and promising areas for development-including synfuels-in the minerals industry. These areas are discussed later in this article. Accompanying articles in the special issue discuss the E&C company's role in mining projects, research and development in E&C firms, one approach to contract work used by an E&C firm, and an E&C project case study.

Efficient and re1iable methods of fragmentation through blasting have been sought ever since the introduction of black powder in mining operations, but the pace of investigation became faster with the discovery of nitroglycerine. The development of modern measuring instruments and the need to blast more rock with the least damage has made the study of blasting mechanics and its application more important, particularly since the oil embargo. Investigations into the practical approach evolved by Daws (1909) and the work done to make it more useful is discussed. The work of several investigators is touched upon with particular reference to the development of computer programs to simulate and optimize blasting operations.

The Automated Minerals Information System (AMIS) is an integrated data base system being developed to support the Bureau of Mines minerals information collection and analysis activities. The system facilitates cross-referencing and integration of domestic and foreign information from a variety of sources. The AMIS provides a central source of minerals information that is versatile and responsive to the needs of problem and policy analysts as well as supporting the needs of those involved in data collection and interpretation. As the AMIS becomes fully implemented, it will become an important tool in forecasting and assessing the impact of policy decisions that affect the supply and demand for minerals. The Bureau of Mines has long been the Federal Government's principal source of worldwide information on non-fuel minerals. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of mineral problems and policies as they affect the world's nonfuel mineral resources. To facilitate timely and accurate analysis, comprehensive data on 87 commodities are collected by various Bureau programs. Minerals information is made available through a number of periodic publications including the annual Minerals Yearbook and monthly Mineral Industry Surveys. These data collection and analysis activities have traditionally been supported by over 200 separate information processing systems. The Bureau of Mines has begun to implement a broad information strategy to provide a better response to the mineral problems and issues of the 1980's. The cornerstone of the Bureau of Mines information strategy is the development of the Automated Minerals Information System. When fully operational, we believe that the AMIS will provide the Bureau of Mines with the most comprehensive source of minerals information available anywhere in the world.

INTRODUCTION In any mining operation all possible steps should be taken to increase efficiency. One area for improvement is mine planning and design, particularly in the area of equipment selection for room-and-pillar systems. Be- cause of the availability of a wide variety of face machines, a fair degree of selectivity can be exercised in the choice of equipment for a particular job. However, this choice must be made on the basis of quantitative facts and forecasts related to the mining application. The purpose of this section is to develop and analyze the details of the mining process. Some specific areas studied include the relationship of system design to productivity, suboptimization as a result of equipment changes, and measurement of system performance. The plan of work leading to a quantitative description of these study areas is based on the growing interest in total system design using simulation as an analytical method (Manula, 1963). CHARACTERISTICS OF PRODUCTION OPERATIONS FROM ROOM-AND-PILLAR SECTIONS For a given mining method, raw production in a given section of a mine is primarily dependent upon the coal seam thickness, roof and floor conditions, methane emission, the mining methods, and the man-machine element. Average section production varies from 300 to 800 st per shift for conventional and continuous mining in high seams and from less than 100 to 300 st per shift in low seams. Since the reject varies from 0 to 40%, these figures must be decreased by the appropriate percentage to reflect the amount of clean coal mined. Personnel requirements per production section per shift for the various methods are listed in Table 1. Table 1. Production Personnel Method No. Method No. Conventional 12-1 5 Longwall 9-14 Continuous 9-1 2 Shortwall 9-12 MINING VARIABLES To evaluate the constraints and interrelationships for various mining methods, it is necessary to categorize the variables which underlie system production potential. Seven critical independent variables which determine production can be identified and categorized (Suboleski, 1978) : Seam Height The five categories are as follows: less than 36 in.;. 36 to 55 in.; 55 to 100 in.; 100 to 180 in.; and greater than 180 in. Floor Quality Floor quality ranges from : Excellent: Smooth, hard, grades less than 1 to 1 % % , and dry. Good: Smooth, soft but dry, with grades less than 3 % . The floor will deteriorate, but cautious operation can prevent it. There may possibly be heaving at some later time. Fair. Soft and damp. There is occasional interference with equipment operation; requires the use of four-wheel drive shuttle cars; ruts with regular use, and may have adverse grades of 5 to 7%. This may be coupled with slippery bottom and/or occasional steep rolls. Poor: Soft and wet. Requires blocking of the bottom to support equipment. There are frequent steep rolls and grades in excess of 7%. Roof Quality Roof quality ranges from : Excellent: Men are able to work under the unsupported top during the initial production cycle if legally permitted. Good: The roof is bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern with short bolts (442 in.) or <seam height if the seam >42 in., or requires posting with no bolts on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern. There are no falls. Average: The roof is normally bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern, but with long bolts (>seam height or >6 ft.). There are infrequent minor falls or there may be an excellent roof which is difficult to drill. Fair: This type often requires spot bolting in addition to the regular pattern or bolting with planks. The roof conditions require shorter than planned cuts, or narrow cuts. Poor: This type requires bolts plus crossbars and posts, or installation of yielding supports or truss-type support. It is almost certain to fall if this is not done. Methane Liberation This ranges from none detected to low (no buildup at the face, even with minimum ventilation requirements) to moderate (the curtains must be extremely tight and tubing close to the face or methane will build up to 1 % during the loading of the car) to high (methane will build up to 170 if the miner is operated at the normal rate, even with proper ventilation). Hardness of Coal Coal hardness falls into the following categories: Soft: Soft coal is easily cut by a continuous miner. A plow could be used by longwall. Average: Coal of average hardness could be easily cut by a miner, and a shearer would be used in the longwall. Moderate: Moderately hard coal causes difficult cut-

There are many methods available for the estimation of geologic parameters (Popoff, 1966; Barnes, 1980). In the last decade a new and relatively sophisticated technique using statistical theory has emerged: geostatistical kriging (David, 1977; Journal and Huijbregts, 1978; Rendu, 1978). An interesting property of geostatistical estimation is that when a geologic parameter is estimated for a given volume, not only is the estimate generated but an associated measure of certainty is produced as well. This statistical measure of estimation confidence is called the estimation variance. While the concept of an estimation variance is universally considered to be a good idea, mining engineers and geologists do not currently have the tools to incorporate it into their planning and quantitative analysis. This paper attempts to develop and present some of the necessary tools required to incorporate estimation uncertainty into mine planning. Geologic uncertainty is portrayed as an economic business risk. This risk is objectively characterized, and-the associated cost is quantified. Geologic delineation sampling is viewed in this light as an economic commodity with an associated cost and value. A coal mine planning example is used as a focus in this presentation. The data used is real, though it has been modified to maintain data security and project anonymity.

The simultaneous use of two or more families of collectors can sometimes improve one or more key flotation performance indicators, especially if the ore under consideration contains several minerals bearing the same metal. The maximum amount of collectors that can be used is limited by the need to maintain a high concentrate grade and selectivity. Therefore, when more than one collector is required, an experimental design that allows variations of both the proportions and the amounts with respect to other process factors has to be selected to find the optimum dosage. This type of design is known as "process factors in mixture amount experiment". It is a powerful design suitable for discovering the existence and evaluating the magnitude of the interactive effects between various flotation parameters. This paper elaborates the principles on which such a design is based, and demonstrates its usefulness with a case study.

This paper reviews various bauxite classification schemes with respect to the differences in texture, composition and geological associations of the deposits. It demonstrates that a techno-economic classification, based on: a) associated rock type - lateritic versus karstic, b) content of aluminum ore minerals - gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore, and c) gangue minerals (iron oxides etc.) has a geological basis with natural cut-off points for the bauxite types identified. Thus, this scheme is seen as applicable to bauxite resources. It also provides a basis for their rational exploitation taking into consideration the long-term interests of both the bauxite producing and consuming countries. Against this background, the industrial mineral or non-metallurgical grades of bauxite are seen as localised and relatively rare occurrences. Their consumption should, therefore, be aimed toward the specific (hence more remunerative) products as indicated by the bauxite characteristics.

3.1 INTRODUCTION As heap leach precious metal projects become increasingly common in the United States, federal, state and local regulatory agencies are beginning to take a closer look at the short- and long-term environmental consequences of this recovery technology. From an operator&apos;s point of view, there is seemingly a confusing regulatory maze to be navigated and a plethora of permits and approvals to be obtained prior to commissioning a heap leach operation. The degree of difficulty associated with obtaining permits for a heap leach project depends largely upon the state in which the project is located. Permit acquisition is generally easiest in those states most familiar with heap leaching technology. For example, heap leaching is well understood in Nevada, and heap leach operations are relatively easy to permit, although permitting conditions in Nevada have recently become more stringent. However, many states are just beginning to become familiar with heap leach operations. Many of these states such as Idaho, Colorado, South Dakota, Oregon, Montana, Washington and South Carolina are in the process of drafting regulations and establishing guidelines for heap leach projects. In most cases, these regulations specify design and operating criteria as well as reclamation and decommissioning procedures. This chapter provides an overview of the regulatory and permitting aspects of heap leach operations. Permitting requirements for projects developed on federal land are discussed in detail. &apos;The state and local regulatory atmosphere and permitting requirements for various states are also presented. The chapter concludes with a generic permitting strategy. 3.2 KEY ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS The primary concern of most local, state, and federal regulatory agencies is the use, storage and transport of sodium cyanide (NaCn), and potential cyanide contamination of surface and groundwater resources. The toxicity of cyanide to people, fish and wildlife is also an important issue. Unfortunately, in the public eye, cyanide heap leaching has some emotional impacts similar to those associated with radioactivity and uranium mining. This perception and the general lack of understanding of cyanide can lead to unnecessary concern about cyanide contamination, further complicating the regulatory environment.

"Optimization techniques are successfully used in many different fields such as engineering, physics, economy, and politics in order to enhance the performance of the systems. In concrete technology, Aggregates are prepared by mixing the water and cement in proportional quantities. In order to obtain desired quality control parameters, the determination of the ingredients ratios is one of the important problems for the optimization. Additionally, in the quarries where the aggregate quality constantly changes, blending optimization must be made to obtain a sustainable aggregate quality. This study showed that linear programming, which is easy and which includes many aggregate properties, cannot be used in terms of some aggregate properties. Therefore techniques such as nonlinear programming or genetic algorithm must be used. INTRODUCTION Concrete is a used construction material and made by mixing the aggregate, cement, and water. The concrete properties are directly related to the properties of these materials in blending. The quantity of aggregates in concrete is approximately 70 percent of the concrete’s volume. Therefore, the most important material is aggregates. The extraction of aggregate materials in quarries is more problematic because of variable bedrock properties. Therefore, the quality of the materials changes and the characteristics of the concrete are also influenced directly. In terms of sustainable use of natural resources, produced aggregate materials which have different qualities should be used optimally (Adiguzel et al., 2014). Nowadays, in the solution of the blending optimization, various optimization techniques are being used such as linear programming, nonlinear programming, and genetic algorithm. In this study, blending optimization techniques especially used for concrete aggregates blending have been summarized, and the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques have been introduced. BLENDING PROBLEMS Blending is a frequently encountered problem in process-type manufacturing such as mining, refinery, food industry, chemical industry and metal industry (Sakalli 2010). Blending is a commonly used method in lots of practical solutions (Sarker and Newton 2008). Several optimization techniques are available for blending problems (Furman and Pardalos 2009). The most important issue is to blend with minimum cost. The blending problem is a special linear model which was developed to solve this problem. In blending optimization research, linear programming is a widely used method (Adiguzel et al. 2011; Bascetin and Adiguzel 2011)."

The Mine Safety and Health Administration has conducted tests to determine the effectiveness of two methods for reducing diesel particulate emissions in underground coal mines. Both methods involved collection of the particulate material before being released into the environment. One method utilized a disposable pleated paper filter attached to the tail pipe; the other utilized a reusable wire mesh screen attached to the tail pipe. This paper describes the instrumentation and testing used to evaluate both control methods. Results of respirable dust and diesel particulate measurements made underground are presented and analyzed.

Characterization of an ore or mill product is routinely performed by time consuming and tedious chemical analyses, sink-float separations, etc. Additionally, these types of tests do not provide data concerning the interrelations and interlocking of the mineral constituents. This paper discusses some of the applications and capabilities of the Minerals and Material Science Research Center at The University of Alabama. Back-scattered electron images of coal, oil shale, complex suldfide, and tantalium ores were acquired using a JEOL 8600 electron microprobe with a NORAN (formerly Tracor Northern] 8500 image analysis system. Methods of analysis and typical results are discussed.

Cyprus Pima is a medium-sized open-pit copper mine located 35 km (22 miles) south of Tucson, AZ. The ore body was discovered using geophysical prospecting methods in 1953 and was originally worked as a small underground mine followed by small open-pit operations. As mining equipment grew larger and the economic ore grade dropped, the operation grew in size, through four expansions, to the present 50 500 tpd (56 500 stpd) milling rate. The remaining stripping ratio is about 2.5 to 1. Mining equipment includes 11 electric shovels ranging in size from 6 to 15 m3 (8 to 20 cu yd) and 42 diesel-electric haulage trucks ranging in size from 89 to 223 t (100 to 250 st). Mine planning is performed at Cyprus Pima to serve several functions. The most important is to plan ahead, one year at a time, to predict the ore grade and stripping requirements on a month-by-month schedule. This yearly plan is necessary for budget preparation and is revised once each quarter to incorporate variations in actual production experienced during the preceding quarter.

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of machine driven soft ground tunnelling projects. This increase is largely due to the technological development of slurry and EPB Shield systems. A new generation of soft ground tunnelling machines, markedly different from those of five years ago, now overcomes ground conditions that until now were too costly and impractical to undertake. The paper reviews the latest soft ground tunnelling machine developments in material transport, guidance and control, seismic surveying, soil conditioning, settlement control, cutting tool applications and variable mode operating systems. Specific projects where this technology has been applied will be highlighted.

Over the years, improvements have been made in the recovery of nonferrous metals, including improvements in the areas of mineral processing, pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy to extract cobalt as a byproduct from host minerals containing mainly nickel, copper and associated precious metals. At present, the technological emphasis is on solvent extraction coupled with electrowinning (SX-EW) for lateritic sources of supply within the Southern Hemisphere, such as in Australia and New Caledonia. Although sulfide-bearing ores, such as those found in Canada and Russia, will serve as a viable long-term source for cobalt, a ubiquitous metal, the future trend is anticipated to be in the implementation of compact and efficient SX-EW facilities that apply state-of-the -art innovation with environmental compliance This paper serves to collate the known practices for the recovery of market-grade cobalt by means of electrowinning from either an aqueous sulfate medium or chloride medium after upstream leaching, solvent-extraction and solution-purification procedures. For completeness, other commercial production techniques for the recovery of cobalt as a sulfide or oxide product are included in the summary of current cobalt processing practices.

One of the advantages of the market¬place, economists believe, is that it automatically generates information which would otherwise be hard to come by. For example, supply and demand signals imply something about private and social sacrifices and benefits. This information is seldom perfect, and can neglect some costs and benefits, but it nevertheless is crucial data. Moreover, marketplaces can also eliminate the need for some information. For example; since market participants are voluntary actors, only those transactions are culminated in which a mutual gain occurs. This eliminates the need for some cost-benefit calculations. A corollary to this standard economic doctrine is that whenever a government or other party supplants a marketplace, it must generate some of the information either lost or newly-needed. (Schultze, 1977) In 1981, following a ten-year moratorium the United States government resumed leasing of publicly-owned coal. When the government designed this program, the goal was to guide the marketplace, rather than merely to respond, as a landlord, to the market&apos;s wishes. This goal has been modified somewhat, due both to the changing political climate and to the practical difficulties of implementing so ambitious an undertaking. Nevertheless, during this period of program design and implementation, part of the challenge of creating and using the necessary information fell to the professional modelling fraternity.

INTRODUCTION The mine hoisting equipment that is selected and installed at a mine is for the lifetime of the mine and, therefore, it is extremely important that a proper choice be made. Several types of mine hoist designs, including double drum hoists, single drum hoists, friction hoists, and various special designs of these, are available to¬day. Each has advantages and disadvantages and they should only be used in suitable applications. Drive systems for mine hoists must be evaluated together with the mechanical systems for each hoist application. It does not make sense to properly select the hoist mechanical system and then choose a drive system that turns out to be a bottleneck. MINE HOIST TYPES There are two basic types of mine hoists available in the world today: the drum hoist, on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe) hoist, which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Drum Hoists Single Drum Hoist: A single drum hoist (shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1) can be used as a service or production hoist with the cage or skip in balance with a counterweight (Figs. 2 and 3). It can efficiently service one or more levels, since the location of the counterweight at any time is not important. As a pro¬duction hoist with skips in balance, the single drum hoist is best used for single level hoisting. All rope adjustments for proper spotting must be done manually for the single drum hoist. This has to be done periodi¬cally to compensate for rope stretch. A variation of the single drum hoist is the divided drum hoist. If multilayer winding is necessary, the single drum hoist must have a divider to allow a sep¬arate compartment for each rope. If a counterweight is used with a divided drum application, the counter¬ weight rope can be wound on a smaller diameter (Fig. 4). Consequently, it moves a lesser distance than the main conveyance and rope adjustment problems are re¬duced. Double Drum Hoist: A double drum hoist in oper¬ation is shown in Fig. 5. Double Drum Hoist With One Drum Clutched: As a service hoist with cage and counterweight, a double drum hoist with one drum clutched (Fig. 6) can serve several levels efficiently. The advantage of having the clutched drum is that it allows rapid adjustment of ropes due to initial stretch. Some users may prefer the single drum hoist with manual rope adjustment, while others consider the added expense of the second drum and clutch is justified to make rope adjustments quickly. The value of this feature for a particular application should be discussed with the hoist manufacturer. As a production hoist with skips in balance for a multi¬level operation, the clutch can be adjusted for efficient hoisting from any level. Double Drum Hoists with Both Drums Clutched: There are also double drum hoists that have both drums clutched (Fig. 7). The main advantage claimed for this type of hoist is that if something happens in one of the two compartments, the hoist can operate in the other compartment to raise and lower men and sup¬plies. This feature is particularly favorable if there is only one shaft entrance to the mine. Multiple Drum Hoist: The multiple drum hoist, a South African innovation, is a type of drum hoist about which everyone should be aware. Basically, it uses two hoist ropes per conveyance which at great depths per¬mits use of smaller ropes and smaller drums. There are none in use in the United States today. However, they should be considered in very deep mines. Friction (Koepe) Hoists This hoist (Fig. 8) was introduced to the mining world by Frederick Koepe in 1877. In this chapter, a review is made of the various stages of an exploration program, mineral rights acquisition methods and the partners involved in an agreement, the after- tax cash flow approach using present value discounting principles, the establishment of computerized financial models for assistance during the negotiating stages for a mineral property, and the various evaluation techniques and their specific applications during different phases of an exploration program. A set of examples is shown encompassing the initial target-seeking stages to the ultimate feasibility study stage.
