"Pyrometallurgical furnaces are tapped through tap-holes that are opened with drills and oxygen lances. The lance is often used on its own or as the last step of opening the tap-hole. Interaction of oxygen with molten material inside the tap-hole can occur, and is a phenomenon that is not well understood. As part of a study that focuses on the effect of lancing on flow inside and around the furnace tap-hole, a cold-model validation was done. The validation study focuses on validating the MULTIPHASEINTERFOAM multiphase flow solver in OpenFOAM® for the problem involved. The sensitivity of the model to different materials properties (viscosity and density in particular) is presented with both cold models and the results from flow simulations in OpenFOAM®. IntroductionMany pyrometallurgical operations are carried out in furnaces where molten material accumulates continuously. Once enough material has accumulated and is ready to be removed from the furnace, material is tapped through one or more tap-holes in the furnace. Tap-holes differ significantly in both geometry and materials of construction, depending on the process involved – examples of different types of tap-hole configurations can be found in, for example, Nelson and Hundermark (2014). Tapholes all share one common feature: they are high, wear areas of the furnace. Molten material at high temperature flows through these areas, after which the tap-hole is sealed, usually using tap-hole clay. The purpose of the tap-hole clay is to harden inside the tap-hole and seal it until the next tap.Once ready to tap, a pneumatic drill and/or oxygen lance is used to open the tap-hole. The extent of lancing a furnace tap-hole depends strongly on the type of furnace. In, for example, many blast furnace operations lancing is limited as much as possible, and done only if drilling was not effective. In other operations, such as on small-scale pilot furnaces with short tap-holes, only lancing is used to open the tap-hole."

The main source of Mn in raw materials for SiMn production is Mn-ore and Mn-rich slag from the high carbon FeMn production. The amount of slag per tonne of SiMn metal is mainly determined by the ore/slag ratio. Increasing share of FeMn slag at expense of Mn-ore will lead to larger slag/metal ratio in the SiMn process. High volume of slag leads to an increased consumption of energy and probably to higher losses of metal inclusions in the final slag. Excavation of a SiMn furnace has shown that only modest pre-reduction of Mn-ore with CO gas seems to be obtained. Nearly all reduction of MnO was finished at the top of the cokebed. Dissolution and reduction of quartz obviously takes place in the cokebed zone after the main reduction of manganese oxide is finished. Probably the ?pick up? of Si in the metal is quite fast and takes place as the metal trickles down through the cokebed towards the metal bath. The distribution of Si between SiMn alloys and multicomponent MnO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO slags is mainly determined by the process temperature, the silica content of the slag and its R-ratio = (CaO+MgO)/Al2O3. As an example, the equilibrium content of Si in the alloy will increase by about 6 % if the R-ratio is reduced from 2 to 1, provided constant temperature and silica content. The effect of temperature is also considerable. The equilibrium content of silicon will increase by approximately 6 % per 50°C in the temperature range 1550°C to 1700°C. The equilibrium content of MnO in SiMn slags depends first of all on the temperature and secondly on the silica content of the slag. At 1600°C the MnO content decreases from about 9 % at silica saturation to a minimum of about 3-4% when the silica content is reduced to about 40-45%.

This is my second visit to South Africa, and I am struck by the similarities between our countries. This extends to the professional issues associated with engineering and competencies in particular. I propose to outline two exciting stories today. ? Development of competency standards for professional engineers in Australia. ? Development of a management programme which has assisted professional engineers regain positions of leadership in Australian industry and government. First of all I would like to outline the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia(APESMA).

CODELCO is considering the implementation of high-density tailings management at the Chuquicamata mine in northern Chile for its long term disposal plan. To achieve this, CODELCO commissioned the design, construction, and operation of a 70 t/d pilot plant, fed by existing tailings. The testing programme was completed in May 2011, and consisted of laboratory rheological and characterization assessments, pipe loop testing, beaching trials, and analyses of deposition behaviour for solid contents ranging from 57?68% (w/w). This paper describes the characteristics of the pilot plant, the testing programme, the beach trial analyses, and the resulting beach profile predictions based on the stream power theory. CODELCO also used other predictive beach slope methods, such as the equilibrium slope concept, which are not discussed in this paper. The final beach profile for design will be selected after an expert analysis of all methods has been completed.

A new hydrogen production process, named the HyPr-RING, has been proposed. Fundamental concept of the HyPr-RING is integration of water carbon reaction, water-gas shift reaction and CO2 absorbing reaction in a single reactor. Firstly, thermodynamic analysis was done to judge the possibility to realize the process. It was found that high pressure and temperature condition, such as 20 MPa and 1000 K, is required to promote this integrated reaction. Next, experimental verification of the new process was done under the high pressure and temperature reaction conditions. As the results, integration of above three reactions in a single reactor can be done successfully and produced a large amount of hydrogen as estimated by thermodynamic analysis. Experiments showed that organic materials including coal, heavy oil, biomass, plastics can be used in this process. In the gaseous phase, no pollutants such asH2S, SO2, COS are detected so that gas cleanup system is not required for power generation when this process is used. Finally, a process design was made to estimate process efficiency. Theoretically, 1 mole of carbon can generate 2 moles of hydrogen and cold gas efficiency of this process estimated as more than 80 per cent. During galena flotation of Rosh Pinah milled material, metal ions and salts contents of various water resources (deionized, simulated circulated, lead concentrate thickener, lead tailing thickener and borehole) influenced mineral recoveries, upgrade ratios, selectivities, froth stability and flotation kinetics. The various water resources employed during galena flotation caused activation, depression or selectivity effects on minerals due to the presence of different ions in solution. Metal ions in these water resources were adsorbed by the ore, whilst ions associated with gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) were released into the flotation pulp. Lead concentrate thickener water caused depression of sphalerite and pyrite, increased fast floating fractions for silver, copper minerals, sphalerite and quartz (unwanted), and improved slow floating rate selectivity against pyrite and sphalerite. Lead tailing thickener water enhanced sphalerite recovery during galena flotation (unwanted), and increased fast floating fractions of pyrite. Western borehole water did not affect galena recovery, but sphalerite and pyrite recoveries were unacceptably too high. Ions from copper, lead, and zinc salts tended to release high amounts of ions, such as calcium, magnesium, silicon, and manganese from gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) during milling. During galena flotation, lead ions depressed sphalerite, pyrite and dolomite at a lead concentration of 400 ppm, but sphalerite was activated at a concentration of 800 ppm. Sphalerite was activated with copper ions (89% recovery, 2.09 upgrade ratio) and depressed with zinc ions (maximum recovery of 25%). This corresponds with findings in previous investigations. Dolomite and quartz were slightly activated with zinc ions. No evidence was found that lead and copper ions activated any gangue minerals during galena flotation. This article deals with an investigation into the specification and use of appropriate seating systems to reduce whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure in typical vehicles used in the SA mining industry. The EU Directive EU/44/2002 to be legislated in 2005 in European countries, provides legal and economic motivation for this project. The criteria for seat selection can be condensed to the requirements in the directive, which mandates an action level of 0.5 m/s2and a vibration exposure limit of 1.15 m/s2 for an equivalent 8-hour daily exposure period. As part of this study six suspension seats, which the manufacturers claim satisfy the requirements in ISO 70966, were tested to determine the most suitable seat for an articulated dump truck. Six test subjects, three ?light? and three ?heavy? as specified in ISO 70966, were used to estimate the seat transmissibility functions in the vertical direction of the six different suspension seats. Transmissibility functions were measured in the laboratory with two excitation levels of 1 m/s2 and 2 m/s2 r.m.s. in the 0.5?30 Hz frequency range, as well as one spectrum approximating the EM5 spectral class. SEAT values were calculated for road vibration data measured on a typical articulated dump truck. A set of seat selection guidelines that can be followed by vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, procurement officers and and the technical staff on a mine is proposed in this article. It is recommended that additional studies of the use and operating conditions of seating systems in the SA industry, as well as an epidemiological survey be commissioned to gather additional information on this subject. The status of sampling practices in the gold mining industry in Africa was determined as an initial step in a process to standardize sampling practices in the mining industry. Twenty-one gold mines, twenty metallurgical plants, and thirteen laboratories were rated for the potential influence of the relevant sampling errors on each component of the particular sampling system. The findings of the study on the status of equipment, standards, procedures, and management principles were presented in a dissertation (Spangenberg, 20121) and are now used by AngloGold Ashanti?s mines in the quest for correct sampling practices. The information is also used to compile a guideline on leading practice procedures for sampling methods in gold mining. This article uses the case of the Royal Bafokeng Nation to argue that royalties and dividends from mineral resources, if managed well, can provide direct benefits to the surrounding community even while the state collects its share of mining revenues through taxation. The key to this model is the effective management of the resource income flowing into community coffers. Where some of this income may fund urgent interventions in the community, a portion of the income can also be used to establish an intergenerational wealth fund to meet the needs of future generations. As a depleting resource, minerals like gold and platinum are not a sustainable source of income, and must be replaced over time by more regenerative income streams. These strategies and dynamics are manifest in the Royal Bafokeng Nation?s status as both community and quasi-municipality, a labour hosting and a labour sending community, a mine operator and a mine owner. The Royal Bafokeng Nation also owns one of South Africa?s largest community-based investment companies, which channels revenue derived from platinum deposits into a broad investment portfolio that in turn funds an aggressive social development program for 150,000 people living in twenty-nine rural villages.

The phenomenon of spontaneous combustion is one of the major hazards encountered in underground coal mines both from the safety aspects and on economic grounds. Every occurrence, however small, if not tackled effectively in the early stages can develop into open fire, or explosion of gas or coal dust. In terms of economy, even dealing with small incidents may be costly in terms of labour and materials, and in case of a sealing off of a district being necessitated, the loss of face equipment and sterilization of reserves is potentially great. Therefore, expense and effort in prevention and detection of such heating, together with a high state of readiness for dealing with likely event, is completely justified and may be considered as a sound investment. In order to achieve this investment, it may be worth to pinpoint the centre of the fire occurring due to autogenously heating which is supposed to be great assistance to inert it at a least cost and time. Therefore, it is the aim of this work to model the spontaneous combustion in the goaf.

Shotcrete has become a strategic component of support in underground mines. The ductility of reinforced shotcrete makes it a safe and economic means of surface support under adverse static and dynamic loads. The ability of ductile shotcrete to sustain load at large deflections enables excavations in squeezing conditions to be stabilized and the safety in excavations subject to rock bursting, to be assured. A Shotcrete Working Group was formed to find the configurations of fibre reinforcement that would give shotcrete the same ductility as when reinforced with mesh. Beams and panels reinforced with various types and lengths of fibre were accordingly tested. A single mix design consisting of river sand, ordinary Portland cement, fly ash, condensed silica fume and gunite dust and segregation suppressant was used. Steel and polypropylene fibre varying in length from 25 to 50 mm were used in nominal contents of 5 % and 0.5% by mass respectively. Beams, panels and control specimens were shot into specially made formers. Suitable mixing procedures were developed for the different types of fibre. The test specimens were shot in a semi-dry mix process. The shotcrete was cured until tested 28 days after shooting. The fibre contents and uniaxial compressive and Brazilian tensile strengths of the shotcrete were determined from the control specimens. The beams and panels were tested in bending in specially manufactured test rigs. The beams were examined for simple supports and fixed ends. The panels were fixed in a manner that simulated underground conditions and were loaded statically under uniform pressure. The beams were loaded and the corresponding deflections measured up to failure. The panels were loaded up to mid-span deflections of 150 mm. The results are presented in the form of load-deflection graphs. The peak loads and ultimate deflections for the fixed end beams were considerably larger than for the simply supported beams for the various types of fibre considered. None of the beams tested, however, were able to sustain load at relatively constant value beyond the peak load. The panel tests showed that 40 mm and 50 mm long steel fibre and 30 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm long monofilament polypropylene fibre reinforcement gave shotcrete the same ductility as mesh.

Kriging is an interpolation technique for predicting unobserved responses at target locations from observed responses at specified locations. Kriging predictors are best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) and the precision of the BLUP is assessed by the mean square prediction error (MSPE), commonly known as the kriging variance. Both the BLUP and the MSPE depend on the covariance function describing the spatial correlation between locations and on specific parameters. The parameters are usually treated as known, whereas in practice they invariably have to be estimated and the empirical BLUP (that is, the EBLUP) so obtained. The empirical or estimated mean square prediction error (EMSPE), or the so called ?plug-in? kriging variance estimator, underestimates the true kriging variance of the EBLUP, at least in general. In this paper five estimators for the kriging variance of the EBLUP are considered and compared by means of a simulation study in which a Gaussian distribution for the responses, an exponential structure for the covariance function, and three levels of spatial correlation ? weak, moderate, and strong ? are adopted. The Prasad-Rao estimator obtained using restricted or residual maximum likelihood (REML) is recommended for moderate and strong spatial correlation and the Kacker-Harville estimator for weak correlation in the random fields.

The main users of computerised financial evaluation tools in the mining industry are the mining investment analyst, the mine manager together with his financial manager and the mining student (undergruadate and post-graduate). The mining investment analyst's needs mainly centre around the-micro and macro aspects affecting the mining industry in general. The mine manager needs a tool to assist him with the planning, reporting and controlling of production, costs, efficiency, productivity and cashflow. For the mining student studying Financial Evaluation, the main need is for a computer program which will assist him in learning the basics of the subject. This paper concentrates on the needs and objectives of the course Financial Mine Evaluation, the approach to which is presented. Emphasis is placed on the practical computing sessions and the role of the FCS-EPS package as a training tool.

Outsourcing of specialist and non-continuous services is common practice in international mining operations. There is an increasing trend towards this practice in South Africa as a result of the major organisational changes that have taken place in the industry, and as lower revenues and production cost pressures have reduced profit margins. Many specialist functions have been outsourced in the industry for a long time, an example being shaft sinking, which is undertaken by specialist shaft sinking contractors. In the professional services area, some activities have been outsourced, for example the design and construction supervision of tailings dams, but mining related activities such as geology, mine planning and scheduling, engineering, ventilation, and rock engineering, have traditionally been carried out by in-house staff. In this paper some of the industry problems which have led to an increase in outsourcing of professional services are considered. Then the pros and cons of outsourcing are dealt with before outlining the factors which should be taken into account in choosing an outsourcing partner.

A pilot plant paste thickening campaign was conducted at the Anglo Platinum Limited Mogalakwena South Concentrator plant in South Africa in order to determine the water saving capability of P&TT technology. In the process a simple water consumption model was developed for estimating the overall water consumption of the mine. The model indicates that for the Mogalakwena tailings, significant water savings are achieved by discharging thickened tailing directly to the TSF but only at densities where free water release at the TSF is close to zero. The scope of this project was to research, develop and eventually produce a personal occupational hygiene and safety exposure monitor system to assist in recording and analysing various stress factors that could affect the health, wellness and safety of employees, i.e. that could result in injury or ill health of workers, create stress build-up within individual workers that could negatively affect worker alertness and safety, and, may even result in permanent disability or death. Utilized systems at the time were all reactive, whereas the DOHEMS (Proactive Digital Occupational Hygiene and Safety Exposure Monitoring) System enabled the measurement of exposure (and associated risk) in a proactive manner via real-time exposure and digitized recordings. The idea of the development was to create a unit that is so cost effective, small and light that every worker can use a system on a daily basis. The development will eventually replace current, bulky and expensive monitoring equipment. The device must be a portable battery operated device and monitor the immediate working environment by periodic sampling for vibration, noise, toxic gasses (NO/NOX/CO/VOC, etc.), body temperature and heart rate. The samples must be time and date stamped, utilizing a real-time clock (RTC) synchronized with the closest regional secondary time source and related to synchronized real-time video captured samples. These samples are then recorded onto a rugged non volatile storage device with the capacity to store a vast number of samples covering the entire working shift of eight (8) hours plus. The system has been fitted with a clear visual local alarm indication system, indicating any excessive exposures or stresses, for the worker?s supervisor to respond to. This system allows for a pro-active approach. The system is also a wireless system (to the external environment) so as to not affect the mobility of an employee and flameproof to allow for use in explosive environments. The world mineral industry has over the years experienced growth in the production of nickel (Ni) due to its use not only in the catalytic industry but mainly also to its demand in the stainless steel production industry. Hence there is a need to produce more pure and marketable grades of Ni through the use of efficient purification routes such as solvent extraction. The V10-LIX®84-IC system resulted in nickel (Ni) extraction isotherm shifting to lower pH levels. The pH window of opportunity for the extraction of Ni subsequently increased in solution containing magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) even though the system also resulted in slight shifts to less positive pH values for Mg and Ca curves. Results showed a synergistic effect of LIX®84-IC when added to V10 for all elements, Ni, Mg and Ca. The pH50 values for elements Ni, Mg and Ca in the V10-LIX®84-IC system were 2.95, 8.10 and 7.70 respectively. Comparing results obtained when using V10 alone produced ?pH50 for Ni, Mg and Ca being 3.35, 0.15 and 0.70 respectively, which was a confirmation of the synergistic shifts for all the elements. The ?pH50 (Mg-Ni)value was 1.95 with no synergism and 5.15 with synergism and that for ?pH50 (Ca-Ni)was 2.10 with no synergism and 4.75 with synergism. This showed that the Ni-Mg separation factor was relatively larger than the Ni-Ca. Improved loading and stripping kinetics were also observed. In rock cutting mechanics, the effects of the rock and coal brittleness on the efficiency of cutting bits are examined by many researchers. There is no universally accepted brittleness concept as a measure of cutting efficiency. The effect of the brittleness on rock cutting has not been completely explained. The aim of this study is to correlate the relationships between Specific Energy (SE) and brittleness concepts. The applicability of various brittleness measurement methods for rock cutting efficiency has been investigated. In this study, the raw data derived from previous experimental studies were used, and the relationships between SE and brittleness concepts were investigated. The two previously used brittleness concepts, which are named as B1 (the ratio of compressive strength to tensile strength) and B2 (the ratio of compressive strength minus tensile strength to compressive strength plus tensile strength), and a new introduced brittleness concept named B3 (the area under line in relation to compressive strength and tensile strength) were evaluated in this study. The relations among these brittleness concepts for rock cutting efficiency were established using regression analysis. There is no correlation found between the SE values and the brittleness of B1and B2values. But, the SE is strongly correlated with the brittleness of B3. It was seen that the suggested brittleness of B3concept could be used as an indicator in rock cutting efficiency analysis.

Rock density determinations are necessary for ore resource evaluations from estimated block grades in g/t. Rock density depends on the mineral composition and, thus, it is specific for each rock type. The rock density distributions for different rock types are often symmetric. Hence, the arithmetic mean is a good approximation for the average density for lithological units. However, there may exist spatial variation in density values due to alteration, fracturing and original heterogeneities such as layering. This study compares the kriged density model with the one with constant density values for different lithological units in the evaluation of metal amounts in rock blocks. The case study consisted of rock densities measured from the drill cores at Ahmavaara PGE deposit in northern Finland. The used Ni contents were simulated in accordance with the spatial distribution of rock densities. The Ni amounts in 2x2x2 m3blocks are higher for the kriged densities than for the average densities. The difference is increasing with the increasing metal amounts due to the nonlinear correlation between Ni content and rock density. The final effect on the resource estimation depends on the cutt off grade and prices of the metal, for example, for a very valuable metal the small differences are significant

It is an honour to be invited as a speaker to this ICCR conference and a pleasure to be with you here in South Africa. I have been asked to talk about the competitiveness of coal versus other energy alternatives. Coal supplies nearly one-quarter of the global primary energy. Its most direct competitors are gas, nuclear and renewables. Oil is predominantly for transport fuels. Fuel oil is competitive with coal when crude is below its long-run average price and has some niche opportunities. But I will confine my comments to nuclear, renewables and particularly natural gas as the most potent current competitive threat to coal. Competitiveness is more than just cost and price; there is environmental acceptability, security or reliability and increasingly image. These factors are more of a spectrum than discrete issues. Dollars and cents remain the key issue for competitiveness but one must recognize the impact of politics in sustainable development and energy security.
