This paper describes the survey monitoring processes at Venetia, which are discussed under visual inspections, ad hoc investigations, system monitoring and slope stability radar monitoring. This is followed by a description of the main survey monitoring methods. The next section briefly states typical problems, i.e. the atmospheric corrections required to adjust total station distances, maintenance of the system and management of the monitoring process. The paper ends with some important lessons that could be applied to similar monitoring programmes. These lessons are firstly, communication is most important, process a vital part of the system, a champion must take responsibility for the programme and system planning ensures that the monitoring results are needs driven.

"The robust nature of alumina refractory materials presents opportunities for their in-process reclaiming and re-use in non-critical applications. Virgin refractories can be substituted with different quantities of reclaimed materials without compromising the quality of the refractory products. In this study, the effect of reclaimed bauxite on andalusite-containing refractory castables for tundish applications was investigated. The recycled bauxite was formulated in different proportions to replace virgin andalusite in the castables. Standard tests were conducted to evaluate the physical, physicochemical, and thermochemical properties of the formulated products. Static corrosion tests were conducted using tundish slag in order to simulate the actual operating conditions. The results show that the standard flow behaviour, open porosity, and bulk density of samples containing up to 22 mass% reclaimed bauxite were comparable to those of the reference castable. However, high-temperature properties such as static corrosion at 1400°C and hot modulus of rupture at 1500°C indicated that there is an upper constraint to the amount of substitution. The study demonstrated direct potential savings of up to 10% when the reclaimed alumina replacement ratio was increased to 22 mass%. IntroductionAlumina-based refractories can be classified into low-alumina, containing less than 50% Al2O3, and high-alumina or bauxite, containing between 50 and 90% Al2O3. High-alumina refractories have widespread applications in high-temperature metal extraction processes due to their outstanding thermochemical and thermomechanical properties and stability (Rebouillat and Rigaud, 2002; Frulli, 2016). The typical chemical composition of refractory-grade bauxite consists of 85–90 wt.% Al2O3, 5–10 wt.% SiO2, 1–2wt.% Fe2O3, 3–4 wt.% TiO2, 0.4–0.8 wt.% CaO + MgO, and 0.20–0.8 wt.% K2O + Na2O (Nyoka et al., 2013). The thermochemical and thermomechanical properties of bauxite-based refractories rely principally on the conversion of the contained silica and alumina to the highly stable corundum (?-Al2O3) and mullite (3Al2O3· 2SiO2) phases (Rebouillat and Rigaud, 2002; Hill and Sehnke, 2006; Garbers-Craig, 2008; Frulli, 2016)."

Load behaviour in an industrial mill has been measured directly by inserting probes through liner bolts. The data from conductivity probes have indicated the presence of premature centrifuging during manipulation of the load mass. Overloading conditions were also encountered. Overloading and premature centrifuging both reduce the power drawn by the mill. These effects have been successfully modelled.

The authors have conducted several investigations into the prediction of the beach profile of high-density tailings and have found that there are a number of important considerations that need to be taken into account over and above the reliability of the beach profile prediction methodology. These considerations relate to the chemistry of the slurry and specifically the influence of pH and flocculation, both of which have a significant influence on the rheology of the slurry at the discharge point. A number of examples are discussed and a potential testing protocol that will assist in assessing the influence of chemistry ahead of the beach profile predictions is presented. A methodology for assimilating the results of the testing into the likely field situation is discussed, and suggestions are made on application of the results in beach profile prediction. This paper describes the research and development programme to develop a prototype underground auger mining system aimed at developing and demonstrating an underground auger mining system able to provide economic access to thinner (<1.8 m) coal reserves of South Africa. Data concerning the performance of modern coal augers under South African coal mining conditions were gained from a proven surface auger which operated across a range of coal types. These data were analysed and considered in conjunction with historical information regarding previous attempts at building underground augers dating back to the 1950s. Drawing on these data a prototype underground auger mining system, the BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger, was designed and manufactured by the BryDet Development Corporation in collaboration with Eskom and Cutting Edge Technology Pty Ltd with support from Anglo Coal and the Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. The prototype BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger commenced trials in March 2000 at the Matla Mine near Witbank in South Africa. The initial trials were undertaken in an open cut to facilitate the commissioning and training associated with a prototype mining machine. A total of 30 holes was augered in the box cut before the machine moved underground. The prototype BUA 600 first achieved the target penetration depth of 80 m in its third hole. The prototype BUA 600 is a new underground mining system which has passed early testing with ?flying colours? and could provide access to extensive underground coal reserves unmineable by conventional mining techniques both in South Africa and elsewhere around the world.

"Coal mining is a thriving industry and 53% of the coal mined in South Africa is used for electricity generation. Mechanization has made coal mining more efficient, but fines generation has subsequently increased. Up to 6% of the run of mine material can report to the -200 µm fraction. Common problems associated with fines handling include dust formation, storage problems, and high moisture levels. A method to turn this material into a saleable product instead of stockpiling it can add value to a company.Briquetting is a pressure agglomeration method where loose material is compacted into a dense mass (FEECO International, 2014). The briquettes must be able to withstand rigorous handling and transport operations without disintegrating. This study aims to investigate the optimum binder and moisture conditions required to produce a mechanically strong briquette using two different binders - a PVA powder (binder A) and a starch powder (binder B).It was found that for binder A the optimum moisture level was 12% to 14%. At this moisture level the greatest compression strength gains were observed, and low amounts of fines produced in impact and abrasion tests. The minimum amount of binder added while still obtaining a strong briquette was 0.5% binder A. For binder B the optimum moisture level was also 12% and the minimum amount of Binder B to be added was found to be 1%. Briquettes that were dried outside reached their peak strength after about four days, whereas the briquettes that dried inside took about 20 days to reach their strength plateau. Hardly any degradation took place on the surface of the binder A film after exposure of 300 hours of artificial weathering. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that neither binder A nor binder B will add to the ash content of the coal fines, as both binders totally decompose above 530°C.Binder B yielded stronger briquettes after 15 days and also generated less fines. An experimental rig has been constructed to produce chloride stress corrosion cracks in Type 304L stainless steel tube samples. The samples are to be used to test possible in situ repair methods in future work. The factor which influences the time to failure most strongly is the sample temperature; the distribution of cracks within the sample is affected by local temperature variations and by the position of the water line. Low-frequency oscillations in stress, caused by the on-off temperature controller, did not appear to influence cracking in these tests.

Viscosity measurement was carried out over a narrow range of silica content around the fayalite composition. A wide range of temperature and oxygen potential was covered where the slag was completely liquid. In order to keep the slag composition and the Fe3+/Fe2+ratio constant, theCO2/CO ratio was kept constant as the temperature was varied. Increasing the Fe3+content has little effect on viscosity for slags with a silica mole fraction of 0.31. At higher silica contents, increasing the Fe3+content brings about a small decrease in the viscosity.

Equipment selection in mining engineering is one of the most important decisions that affects the mine design, production planning and economic parameters in open pit and underground mining. Mine planning engineers generally use their intuition and experiences in decision making. Mostly, linguistic variables (the weather is raining, soil is wet, etc.) come into question and decision-makers may not know how these variables are computed. Since the advent of the fuzzy set theory, these uncertainties are easily interpreted in the decision-making process. The development of computer technology and programming of colloquial language with expert systems have considerably reduced decision-makers? burden. This paper reviews the development of a computer programme software called EQS (EQuipment Selection) that automates equipment selection in mining engineering using fuzzy set theory. The EQS with an introduction of the concepts and theories of multiple attribute decision-making, the fuzzy set theory, and EQS applications to mining industry problems with case studies are presented

In South African metalliferous mines, stoping operations are largely confined to narrow, tabular orebodies making mechanization extremely difficult. Limited flexibility in terms of stope width has necessitated drilling by means of handheld, pneumatic rock drills at most of our operations. As the largest producer of platinum in the world, we drill in excess of forty million stope blast holes per annum. Cleaning of the broken ore is also done by conventional means?utilizing scrapers and scraper winches. Conventional methods such as these carry high costs in terms of risk exposure as well as labour intensity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a long hole stoping system suitable for the narrow platinum reefs. The new system had to be substantially safer and more cost effective than conventional mining. We selected a site that was conducive to mechanized mining and set out the parameters that we considered would meet our requirements. We then conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the conceptualized long hole stoping system in terms of specific goals. An analysis of the proposed system identified the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One of the most critical goals was to be able to create a man-free stope. This would mitigate the safety risk associated with normal stoping operations, as well as the inefficiency cost previously referred to.

Slag samples taken from adjacent to the furnace wall of a submerged arc ferromanganese smelting furnace have been found to contain high concentrations of K2O. To characterize the phase equilibria relevant to these slags experimental studies have been carried out to determine pseudo-ternary sections of the form ?MnO?-CaO-(SiO2+Al2O3) with a fixed Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.65 and 6.0 wt% K2O for temperatures in the range 1523-1673 K. In the pseudo-ternary section investigated the primary phase fields are found to be mullite, 3Al2O3?2SiO2; corundum, Al2O3; spinel, MnO?Al2O3; manganosite solid solution, (Mn,Ca)O; dicalcium silicate,2CaO?SiO2; gehlenite 2CaO?Al2O3?SiO2; anorthite CaO?Al2O3?2SiO2; kalsilite KAlSiO4 and leuciteKAlSi2O6. It was found that the presence of K2O in the slag decreases liquidus temperature in the anorthite and gehlenite primary phase fields. The manganosite primary phase field is expanded in the direction of increased (Al2O3+SiO2) and the liquidus temperatures in the manganosite primary phase field are increased significantly with the presence of K2O in the slag.

The research described in the paper was aimed at providing standardized information of cases of failed and intact coal pillars in the form of databases to researchers. It also offered the opportunity to take stock of the pillar stability situation in coalmining and to review the impact of the application of the safety factor formula for pillar design. It was found that the physical parameters of coalmining have not changed substantially over the last four decades. However, changes in the controllable parameters like pillar width, pillar width-to-height ratio and percentage extraction have all moved toward the more conservative side. Scrutiny of the database indicates that of all the failures recorded, only 23 occurred in panels that were mined after 1969, when one can assume that the safety factor formula was fully applied. If the pre-1969 practices had been continued, at least 144 collapses would have been expected. There has thus been a substantial reduction of pillar collapse cases, justifying the cost paid for the formula, which has shown to be in the region of 600 million tons of coal. It is evident that that are distinct differences in the natures of the failures among different coalfields. This justifies the attempts to derive seam or coal field specific strength formulae and is a topic that should be pursued.

Chlorine-containing minerals are commonly present in coal. Associated minerals such as pyrite can undergo exothermic reactions. Consequently, it is of great significance to study the effect of inorganic chloride on the spontaneous combustion of coal. In this study, the effects of five inorganic chlorides (sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and zinc chloride) on the spontaneous oxidation of coal were investigated. Analysis of the gaseous products of coal oxidization at low temperatures (323K to 453K) showed that the presence of inorganic chlorine in coal markedly decreases O2 consumption and the generation of CO and CO2. Samples of raw coal and chlorine-loaded coal were oxidized for 36 hours under the same experimental conditions. Infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy results showed that inorganic chloride can inhibit the oxidative decomposition of some functional structure components (methyl, methylene, methine, and hydroxy) in the coal. The influence of inorganic chloride on the oxidation characteristics of the functional groups in coal during spontaneous combustion was investigated using benzyl alcohol and 1-phenylpropanol as model compounds, which were tested under the same experimental conditions as the coal samples. The oxygen consumption of model compounds with and without the addition of inorganic chloride further suggested that inorganic chloride may hinder the oxygenolysis of these structures during low-temperature oxidation. This phenomenon can be attributed to the radical reaction from the perspective of radical chemistry. It can therefore be concluded that inorganic chlorides play an inhibitory role in the spontaneous combustion of coal.

It has been established that significant time-dependent stope convergence may occur over time periods of hours and days in certain hard-rock gold and platinum mines. The source of this time-dependent behaviour appears to be associated with both pre-existing discontinuities and with mining-induced fractures that form near the stope face. These induced fractures may be associated with blasting processes and may also be formed in response to high stress concentrations in the unmined regions immediately ahead of the stope face. In shallower platinum mining operations, time-dependent behaviour is, however, observed to be much less marked unless some form of specific mining-induced fracturing occurs. One particular case of considerable interest is the time-dependent behaviour that is found to be associated with the formation and deployment of crush pillars. The purpose of the paper is to present a simple limit-equilibrium computational model of this behaviour that is sensitive to both the formation sequence and the size of planned crush pillars in a mine layout. This model provides a useful means to optimize the sizing of crush pillars, and at the same time may be used to identify potentially hazardous circumstances in which pillars may not crush in a stable manner.

Modelling languages with risk analysis have been available for decades, but in the past their use has been very expensive, requiring large mainframe computers and lots of computer time. Today, PCs and laptops have incredible power, which makes interactive risk analysis affordable and viable for all enterprises, whether small or large. ?What is risk analysis? ?What is Monte Carlo simulation? ?What kinds of computer models need to be created to use risk analysis and Monte Carlo simulation effectively? This paper addresses these questions and illustrates, with a practical example in the mining industry, how risk analysis techniques can be used to support decisions in the climate of uncertainty.

This paper presents a study on the ability of the King stratification modelto describe density stratification patterns that are achieved under idealizedconditions. Tests were conducted in a batch jig using artificial particles inseven density classes. All particles in a density class had essentially thesame density, size, and shape. Tests were conducted for particle systemsinvolving from two to seven components. Good agreement was obtainedbetween measured and modelled data to an extent that gave strongendorsement of the mathematical appropriateness of the core equation inthe King model. Somewhat ambiguous results were found with regard toclaims about the independencies of the single experimentally-determinedparameter required by the model.

"BASF Mining Solutions has developed a new-generation copper solvent extraction reagent that offers significant benefits over standard extractants currently available to the industry. As the name suggests, the new hightemperature (HT) extractant can be used at a higher operating temperature, but also exhibits significantly lower degradation rates, greater copper-toiron selectivity, and is totally nitration-proof compared with the standard extractants. Pilot-plant trials have also shown that lower aqueous-inorganic entrainment can be achieved. This paper investigates the technoeconomic benefit of using the HT extractant as an alternative to the standard extractant in a high-temperature application. The results of the technical evaluation showed that the use of the HT extractant reduces the extractant addition requirements and bleed volume from copper electrowinning; this smaller bleed requirement further reduces acid and limestone consumption, leading to a reduction in valuable metal losses. The results of the economic evaluation showed that the use of the HT extractant represents significant cost savings over that of the standard extractant. IntroductionCurrent solvent extraction (SX) reagents employed for the extraction of copper from typical pregnant leach solutions (PLS) at ambient conditions function well with minimal long-term effects on the extractant’s performance (Taute et al., 2015). This performance, however, deteriorates at elevated temperatures due to the degradation of the reagent’s hydroxyoximes. The degradation mechanism, acid-catalysed hydrolysis of the oxime, is accelerated by high temperature. This has a knock-on effect where the increase in degradation products increases the organic viscosity, leading to increased entrainment, crud formation, and ultimately to an increase in SX reagent consumption (Bender, Emmerich, and Nisbett, 2013).SX reagents also show an increase in the co-extraction of iron as the ferric concentration in the PLS increases. Co-extracted iron is transferred to electrowinning (EW) during stripping of the loaded organic and can adversely affect EW current efficiency. Iron in the EW circuit is typically managed by bleeding the electrolyte; however, this can lead to excessive consumption of EW reagents such as acid, cobalt, and mist-eliminating surfactants. The electrolyte bleed can also affect upstream consumption of reagents, such as lime, due to the high acid concentration recycled to leach."

A brief summary of the propagation characteristics of rock provides the necessary understanding to design effective radar surveys. Measurements of the electrical properties of the major Bushveld platinum-bearing horizons and their host rocks show that radar is an excellent tool for both short -and longer-range mapping. Experimental work confirms the performance predictions. High frequency, 500 MHz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a first-rate tool for mapping features in the hangingwall of the orebody, locally known as a ?reef?, for the purposes of determining hangingwall stability. The triplet chromitites above the UG2 have been clearly mapped, as has the Leader Seam above the UG2. Borehole radar at lower frequencies has been used over longer ranges to map reef elevation. Potholes in the UG2 are clearly distinguished in range and elevation to within metre accuracy. The nature of the slump in the various footwall horizons is also apparent. In future, as GPR is routinely applied, it is likely to become used for other purposes. Borehole radar is being developed to operate at higher frequencies, which will allow it to be deployed from boreholes that are within 5 m of the target horizon. A study carried out in the iron basin of Lorraine (North-East of France) highlighted the existence of under-oxygenated and noxious gas emissions (carbon dioxide, radon…) in vast built-up areas related to former mine workings. Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes in buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. The influence of varying amounts of magnesia, silica, and alumina in iron ore sinter on its mineralogy, reducibility index (RI), reduction disintegration index (RDI), physical breakdown (AI and TI), and production properties (coke breeze rate) were examined. It was found that the mineralogy of iron sinter can more easily be predicted from its chemical composition than from the RI, RDI, AI or TI. Anticipating the consequence that varying amounts of MgO and SiO2would have on sinter properties is complex, and not necessarily predictable. High concentrations of Al2O3in the sinter result in high concentrations of the SFCA phase, but with drastically deteriorated properties. This study also confirmed that the form in which fluxes are added to the raw material sinter mixture affects the mineralogy and properties of the produced sinter.
