The study investigates the effect of prior corrosive exposure on crack growth resistance behaviour of thin sheet (3 mm thick) aluminium alloy 2024-T3 at slow strain rates. Compact tension specimens were exposed to standard corrosive environments that simulate accelerated atmospheric corrosion attack. Two corrosive environments were considered – an exfoliation corrosion (EXCO) solution and a 3.5 wt% sodium chloride solution. The unloading compliance R-curves of the two-hour EXCO-exposed specimens revealed a significant degradation of approximately 11% in the crack growth resistance behaviour (Kc_e values) compared to the baseline (air-exposed) values. Furthermore, secondary intergranular crack formation was also revealed in the plastic zone ahead of, and adjacent to, the crack tip of these specimens; which formed during the crack growth resistance loading. It is postulated that the observed degradation of the Kc_e values of the EXCO-exposed material is due to hydrogen embrittlement since the exposure times for the EXCO evaluation were limited to ensure that uniform corrosion dominated; that is, significant penetration of corrosion damage and pitting due to localized corrosive attack did not occur. The sodium chloride-exposed specimens revealed a similar degradation (13%) after 24 hours exposure. However, slight intergranular corrosive attack and isolated pitting were observed on the exposed surfaces prior to crack growth resistance loading, resulting in notch effects that could assist in crack growth. Pitting and intergranular corrosion were, however, not observed at the pre-crack tip. The relative contributions of the notch effects and the hydrogen embrittlement during the degradation of the KR performance are, therefore, unclear.

Discrete element methods (DEM) have provided the ability to resolve the complex phenomena experienced by ore within comminution devices such as tumbling mills. The new developments in DEM techniques and the corresponding increase in computational power have made it more feasible to study the movement of individual ore particles as they traverse a tumbling mill. A range of information can be extracted on individual particle impact histories, such as kinetic energy at the time of collision, velocities of individual particles, per-particle stress tensors, impulse, and collision energy. DEM codes have been modified to provide required information that can be analysed in associated software to investigate the impact of varied operational parameters on the resultant granular dynamics. This paper explores the reaction of individual ore particles to the breakage environment within a tumbling mill using DEM techniques and studies the stressing conditions that would lead to either impact or abrasive breakage. It is commonly accepted that three types of aquifers exist in the Bushveld Complex: (a) alluvial aquifers in areas of river courses, (b) weathered bedrock aquifer formed by the in-situ weathering of the bedrocks, (c) fractured aquifers underlying the weathered aquifers controlled by the regional and local fracturing of the crystalline rocks. Hydrogeological studies conducted in the Critical Zone of the Bushveld Complex in the western limb show that the UG2 pyroxenite layer is of a particular interest and has a unique aquifer property. It yields much of the groundwater inflow into some mines and can be classified as the most important aquifer in the vicinity of the mining zone. The UG2 pyroxenite aquifer is restricted to the dipping UG2 pyroxenite unit. The unit weathers more intensely than the surrounding norites and anorthosites and is characterized by deeper weathering horizons (two to three times deeper than the surrounding rocks). For much of the UG2 mining area between depths of 35 ? 80 m, stoping of the UG2 takes place approximately 5 ? 7 m below the UG2 pyroxenite aquifer, and usually there is no groundwater inflow into the mine workings. However, unsealed deep exploration boreholes intersecting the UG2 pyroxenite and reaching underground mine workings, or mine roofbolts penetrating the weathered pyroxenite aquifer from underneath, can result in significant groundwater inflows into the underground workings. The reason as to why the UG2 pyroxenite weathers more than the norites and anorthosites has not been fully studied but is suspected to be due to the bedding planes of the unit and mineralogical composition of the particular pyroxenes forming the unit, which result in preferential physical and chemical weathering under atmospheric conditions. The weathered pyroxenes form sand-sized, rounded grains with improved effective porosity and permeability suitable for the storage and passage of groundwater. The orientation of the pyroxenite aquifer can easily be determined as it dips with the Bushveld layered strata. No-flow boundaries can be assumed on the hanging- and footwall of the pyroxenite aquifer and the flow rates can be estimated using 2-dimentional analytical equations. However, this must be confirmed with strong conceptual models since the existence of a fracture network connecting the pyroxenite aquifer with the overlying weathered and/or underling fractured aquifers can complicate the system, lowering the accuracy of analytical models and necessitating the utilization of numerical models.

"The purpose of this study is to understand how ore loss and dilution affect the mine call factor, with the aim of subsequently improving the quality of ore mined and fed to the mill. It was necessary to know the relationship between ore mined and delivered for processing in order for the mine to operate efficiently. A review of the literature suggested the mine-to-mill integration approach as a standard intervention to address declining mine call factors. A case study was undertaken at a gold mine in the Free State on the influence of the fragment size distribution on ‘free gold’, the effect of ore loss and dilution on the mill efficiency, and time tracking of ore movement from source to the plant. The study revealed that fragmentation, underground accumulation of ore, and dilution have a significant influence on the mine call factor and mine output. It was difficult to quantify the total ore loss due to the time lag between mining and milling, which is extremely variable, when estimating the mine process inventory. However, it was possible to estimate the total dilution with some degree of precision by analysing the daily blast and head grades. It is therefore recommended that mines accept that some gold loss and dilution will always occur during blasting and transport of broken ore, and this loss must be minimized.IntroductionThe mining of high gold grades is obviously very beneficial for the economic viability of an operation, but optimum recovery of the product is required to maximize profits (Chapman and Bindoff, 2010, p. 13). Although integrating these two requirements is very difficult, due to the various activities occurring between mining and processing, it is indispensable. The main driver of this integration is the impact that different ore types and characteristics have on head grade. According to Isokangas et al. (2012, p. 871), mining and processing operations involve a series of well-defined sequential stages that are complementary in an efficiently operating mine, with the performance of one operation affecting that of another. An attempt to optimize each function separately without considering the whole extraction process will not result in the optimum efficiency of the entire mine. Several researchers have developed a proven methodology for revealing these inefficiencies (Dance et al., 2006, p. 1)."

This paper briefly describes a computerised model of the South African electricity system which has been developed jointly by the Atomic Energy Board and the Electricity Supply Commission. The results of an analysis of this system have been subjected to a fairly extensive sensitivity analysis which reveals that up to the year 1990 between 680 and 700 million tons of coal will be required for electric power generation, together with between 7 000 and 10 000 tons of uranium. This result is fairly insensitive to data variations, but the prediction of a cumulative requirement up to the year 2000, of between 1 300 and 1 800 million tons of coal and 25 000 to 70 000 tons of uranium, proves to be very data-sensitive.

"Rio Tinto’s Western Australian expansion, combined with mining within structurally complex geology and increasingly below the water table, presents challenges in effective slope management to ensure safe and economic mining.The Geotechnical Management System (GMS) was developed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) to manage geotechnical risks identified during the design process and implementation, and to ensure feedback based on the ‘as-found’ conditions. The GMS utilizes a risk-based approach to geotechnical risk management and is centred on the geotechnical risk and hazard assessment management system (GRAHAMS). GRAHAMS is used to assess pre- and post-control risk for future potential risks (planned slopes), current risks (as-built slopes), and actual geotechnical hazards (realized risks) identified in the pit. This serves as a core operational risk management tool in identifying and prioritizing key risk sectors and management of critical controls. The system’s database reporting functionality supports effective communication of operational risks to operational personnel, as well as reporting the risk profile across operations to management.A rigorous engagement process between design engineers and sitebased engineers is implemented to ensure that key design assumptions, limitations, risks, and opportunities are understood by the site teams. This information, together with mine plan schedule details, is used to assess the design risk and develop appropriate controls. These controls typically include slope performance monitoring and slope reconciliation. The design feedback loop is closed through sharing of key slope performance and reconciliation data with the design teams.The GMS has been successfully implemented in RTIO pits and is fundamental to successful geotechnical slope management. Improved characterization of design assumptions has allowed for re-assessment of the pit design and improved hazard management in high-risk pits. The GMS, GRAHAMS, and other processes reduce the incidence of unexpected slope instability. Improved understanding of rock mass conditions has allowed for economic optimization through redesign of slopes, allowing for an improved understanding of risk and fewer unexpected conditions (surprises), hence an increased realized value."

Considerable practical knowledge and effective use of empirical evidence is required in the design of tunnel support systems. In many instances, it is unclear how individual support elements interact with fractured rock and which elements of the support system are critical in controlling and containing the movement of material proximate to the excavation. The present paper outlines a displacement discontinuity approach that allows the coupling of surface constraints, in the form of liner or mesh material, to an explicit representation of time-dependent rock discontinuity creep movements. The method is illustrated for a simple square-shaped tunnel profile in which the fracture zone is mobilized by an imposed stress field. A crucial aspect of the model is the computational treatment of the coupling between the liner material and there presentation of the fractured rock mass. This allows the response of the liner material to be assessed quantitatively in terms of the possible reduction of movement in the rock mass. The importance of installing the liner timeously after the excavation is formed is illustrated in a specific example. A number of computational difficulties in simulating liner-rock interaction mechanisms are identified.

"The aim was to investigate stable pillar design procedures currently in use on chrome and platinum mines, subject them to a critical appraisal, and review some of the alternatives proposed in the literature. It is concluded that these pillar design methodologies suffer from drawbacks that can be detrimental to the mining industry and that an improvement is essential.It was decided that the increased availability of analytical models and failure criteria could be exploited to update the empirical to an analytical/empirical method. The proposed methodology adopted FLAC2D simulations using the Hoek-Brown failure criterion to calculate full stress-deformation curves for typical pillars. The mine stiffness concept was introduced to determine the pillar load, integrating the influence of the pillar and strata stiffness and mining geometry.The proposed methodology was calibrated by comparing experimental and predicted deformations and failure depth of pillars in one hard-rock mine. The conclusion was that the methodology is an improvement over the one currently in use. An improved factor of safety is given by the intersection point of curves for the stiffness of the system and the pillar strength. IntroductionThe paper describes part of the findings of a PhD thesis (Kersten, 2016) on an alternative stable pillar design methodology. This publication contains sufficient information to implement the method for further interpretation and testing. A detailed comparison of measured and predicted data is dealt with in the thesis, and the results show that there is promise in the methodology.The design of stable pillars in mining is of fundamental importance, not only in the Bushveld Complex mines but throughout the mining industry. Wherever mining occurs, pillars are formed at some stage and it is essential to predict their behaviour, i.e. whether they will burst, yield, or remain stable. Although of crucial importance, pillar design still suffers from major shortcomings and weaknesses."

JoughinProduction planning is a subject that lies at the interface between the computing centre and mine management. Discus¬sion during this session was thus largely concerned, directly or indirectly, with communication between computing and mining personnel, and as such was relevant to the symposium as a whole.Mr A. Weiss set the tone of this discussion by referring to `user-orientated systems'. He congratulated Mr Burne in this regard, pointing out that his long-term production scheduling program, as a computer system, was similar in approach to the manual system it replaced, and was therefore easily understood by planning engineers. He asked whether the schedule engineer had his 'hands on' the system, to which Mr Burne replied that the engineer did in fact spend several days running alternative schemes through the computer. Mr Weiss commented on the advantage of having terminals on site for this sort of engineer-computer interaction. He also commented on the flexibility of Mr Burne's approach to scheduling and how preferable this was to a one-step optimization package. This was brought home by a question from Mr H. D. Small: Mr Burne's program sometimes found it necessary to temporarily halt an advancing face, and he asked whether the logic of the program could be altered to avoid this (e.g. by suitably slowing down the rate of face advance). Mr Burne replied that it was in fact easier for the planning engineer to sort this problem out manually. The way in which the computer results were presented made it particularly simple for the production engineer to see how to avoid or remedy a stopped face.On the technical side, both Mr Weiss and Mr H. M. Wells questioned Mr Burne on the handling of grade control by his program. From answers by Mr Burne and his colleague Mr K. H. Thomson it emerged that a spot-check on grade every now and then was all that was necessary at Mufulira, and that the idea of actual grade control was more a question of short-term than of long-term planning."

Two examples are presented to show how first-principles – physical-dynamic, here termed behavioural modelling, is used to build digital twins of unit processes or plant sections. A digital twin equips the metallurgist, engineer, or manager with a powerful tool to conduct model-based design, solve process problems and improve operations. It is particularly relevant in the metallurgical industry where plant behaviour is highly integrated, rates respond to particle dynamics in complicated ways and mineral flows across flowsheet boundaries are variable. The two examples used to illustrate the behavioural modelling methodology are 1) a flotation column unit block and 2) a multi-compartment pressure oxidation (POX) autoclave. It simultaneously accounts for the causality of material and heat flow, takes care of mineral particle dynamics, physical and chemical reaction rates, the plant control system behaviour and operating heuristics. The basic modelling building blocks are briefly reviewed to show how the behavioural modelling attributes constrain the mass and heat flow dynamics to physically realistic values. This is the key aspect that allows project value to be created with minimal input data. Behavioural modelling is especially valuable where the process dynamics are poorly understood or controlled, where data-driven models fail to cope with complex and highly integrated plant behaviour, where quality data is lacking or limited funds are available to generate the data required to fill all the knowledge gaps. The paper uses the flotation column example to show how behavioural modelling and simulation can be used to optimise plant performance, while the multi-compartment POX autoclave model shows how it can be used to diagnose process problems. It also provides a solid basis to add a data-driven component – in other words, it makes a strong case for a hybrid first-principle– data-driven approach to solve process problems, especially where microscopic-level understanding is poor. The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.

The fracturing and movement of rock that occurs in the vicinity of a stemmed borehole charge in open pit mining operations are described by examining the effects of the emitted stress waves – shock and elastic – and the expansion of high-pressure detonation product gases. Three principal modes of momentum transfer to fractured rock are identified, all linked to gas expansion work. This work can be delivered radially (burden), axially (stemming), and in the collar zone (cratering). Flyrock is generated under unusual combinations of blast parameters and rock properties. Although infrequent and seldom predictable, the generation of flyrock can nonetheless be interpreted and modelled in terms of the principal mechanisms of rock projection described in this study. The physical processes underlying these principal mechanisms are identified and will permit the development of predictive models for flyrock velocities.

Tasked with developing a flow sheet for a new resource, one typically turns the experts for help. The advice of an expert can be invaluable in reducing the time and costs associated with characterizing an ore (not to mention extracting maximum information from limited samples). While guiding and optimizing a metallurgical concept study requires a certain skill set, selling a project is something different. The metallurgical specialist is usually not responsible for sharing the results of investigations with potential investors. However, the person responsible for selling the project can ensure that a metallurgical concept study is conducted thoroughly and responsibly without having the ability to do the work, while being sufficiently familiar with the metallurgical aspects to authoritatively sell the project. The process of identifying suitable process routes through to constructing a concept flow sheet and mass balance is discussed as a basic example. From basic mineralogical information and a thorough literature survey, the most likely beneficiation routes can be identified and targeted testing conducted. The final top size will depend on the required product properties (mainly grade), the selected beneficiation technology, and the ore?s liberation properties. Once the required top size has been identified, comminution options can be evaluated. Once again, literature surveys can be used to supplement concept-level comminution property information, and select possible equipment and circuit configurations. Marketing, material handling, and logistics-related information can be used to determine required dewatering technologies. At this stage, enough information is available to develop a concept mass balance and conduct basic equipment sizing..

A short survey is given of the Iron Age smelting sites and smelting furnaces that have been found in South Africa. An attempt is made to classify South African smelting furnaces by the inclusion of functional characteristics such as the numbers and positions of tuyeres. An affinity is suggested between the Venda (eastern Transvaal) type of furnace and an East African type. The principles of the smelting process in South African Iron Age furnaces and the characteristics of the smelting products are discussed. Results of metallographic and chemical analyses of 19 iron specimens found at South African sites are given and compared with those from sites in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, Mocambique, and Nigeria. The carburization and steeling of iron during primitive smelting and forging are discussed.

MacGillivray Mr President and gentlemen, I would like to congratulate the authors on presenting a most interesting paper on a very important subject. After several attempts at finding suitable reserves to extend the life of Welgedacht Exploration Company's Utrecht Colliery a block of coal rights was acquired south west of the town of Utrecht. A study of these reserves showed that they would enable a satisfactory return on capital invested to be achieved. It was decided therefore to open up what is now called the Zimbutu section of Welgedacht Exploration Company, to produce 41 000 metric tons of coal per month. The decision to open this section was taken in August, 1968 and due to certain allocation requirements it was necessary to bring it into production by the 1st of January, 1970. Fortunately a fair amount of statistical data had been collected prior to August, 1968 from the old Utrecht Colliery in anticipation of opening a mine and a fairly detailed rechnical report had been prepared. As a result the dead line was only missed by four days. Main features of the Design A feasibility study was carried out on three possible shaft positions and the final position was selected from these three on economic grounds. As the coal seam at the selected shaft position was only 21 metres below the surface it was decided to sink two twin incline shafts to enable rapid establishment of through ventilation and alternative hauling arrangements for quick development. This also allowed the final vertical ventilation shaft to be placed at some distance away to avoid the nuisance of fan noise. Second outlet requirements are also very well met by these twin inclines. Again on the basis of economics and also due to the uncertainty of roof conditions it was decided to use hand loading methods underground. However, to allow for future possible conversion to mechanised loading, should this become economical through rising wages, a conveyor belt was installed in the hauling shaft. This conveyor belt is fed from an endless rope haulage in the east companion by means of tipplers, a bin and a feeder. The main development heading was left clear for the future installation of a conveyor belt which would afford easy conversion to mechanisation.

Understanding the contribution of geophysical variables is vital for identifying ore indicator regions. Both magnetometry and gamma-rays are used to identify the geophysical signatures of the rocks. Density is another key variable for tonnage estimation in mining, and needs to be re-estimated in areas of change when a boundary update has been conducted. Modelling these geophysical variables in 3D will enable investigation of the properties of the rocks and improve our understanding of the ore. The Gaussian Process (GP) was previously used to generate 3D spatial models for grade estimation using geochemical assays. This study investigates the influence of the following two factors on the GP-based autonomously generated 3D geophysical models: the resolution of the input data, and the number of nearest samples used in the training process. A case study conducted on a typical Hammersley Ranges iron ore deposit using geophysical logs, including density, collected from the exploration holes, is examined in this paper.

Minera La Parreña, S.A. de C.V., Milpillas operation is an underground mine designed to process 8 352 tons of ore per day for the recovery of copper through crushing, heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning facilities. In order to optimize copper recovery during leaching, the ore is crushed to 13 mm and subjected to primary sampling every 15 minutes for metallurgical accounting. At the same particle size, primary sample goes to secondary sampling and then, the secondary sample is crushed to 2 mm before tertiary sampling. The tertiary sample is sent to laboratory where a final sample is obtained and pulverized to 106 microns for copper assay. This paper shows a review of sampling strategy focused on minimizing or eliminating sampling errors and an experiment designed to determine copper head grade profile as well as the best sampling frequency.

A method is proposed to estimate the gold content of the ore in the size intervals during size reduction. The method uses the population balance model to trace the gold deportment through the size fractions and monitor the generation of liberated gold grains during the size reduction. The model is calibrated using batch grinding test results of a gold ore. Preliminary results show that the model can be calibrated with a minimum of parameters compared to conventional grinding-liberation models. Keywords: simulation, liberation, gold, exposure, grinding
