"The Bureau of Mines has studied blasting practices in metal mines of the Southwest. The investigation of blasting drift rounds showed among other results, that cut-holes in ground difficult to break could be chambered to advantage under some conditions.In open--cut mines, chambering nearly all holes before blasting is the common practice. Two or more free faces are generally maintained in this type of work, and the amount of explosive necessary to break any bench or bank can usually be estimated from the yardage to be moved. However, in blasting drift or tunnel rounds only one free face is available before the cut-holes are shot, and the quantity of explosive required is generally ascertained best by trial.In addition to being the most difficult to break, the cut-holes are the most important of a drift round. When the cut-holes ""break bottom"" less work is required of the other holes, and a full break of the round is generally obtained. In ground difficult to blast, extra care and expense are justified to insure that the cut-holes ""break bottom.""At many mines the work is so organized that all blasting is done at the end of the shift, and a decided advantage would have to be gained to make chambering of the cut-holes economical. Also, in many mines blasting during the shift would not be practical. One or two holes could probably be drilled during the time necessary to do the chambering. However, under certain special conditions, such as in small operations or those where ""leasers"" or contractors are working, drill holes could be chambered should there be an advantage in doing so. Moreover, in some mines it might be practical to chamber the cut-holes at the lunch hour. In ordinary rounds the cut-holes are generally drilled by noon. It would not be necessary to tear down the drill or remove tools from the face to do this work of chambering."

Studies of liquid-vapor equilibria of gas mixtures at the Bureau of Mines Amarillo Helium Plant Laboratory require that the equilibrium cell be maintained uniformly at any desired temperature from approximately room temperature to -320° F. The temperature-control system must also tolerate a substantial heat input, in the form of warm gas flowing into the cell, without loss of control. Temperatures between the sublimation temperature of carbon dioxide (-109° F.) and the boiling point of liquid nitrogen (320° F.) are usually obtained by methods utilizing a hydrocarbon liquid bath cooled by liquid nitrogen.4/5/6/7/ Owing to the fire hazard attending such baths, a safer method of temperature control was desirable.

In overview, the world's mineral industry in 1989 registered gains over its 1988 performance, but these gains were by no means as pronounced as had been those of 1988. The traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely production, trade, and consumption levels, reflected significant growth in most industry sectors from crude material extraction through the gamut of down- stream processing. Growth in market economy countries generally exceeded growth in the centrally planned economy countries as a result of a variety of causes that will be covered subsequently, but even among the centrally planned countries there were some upturns. In contrast to these measures of the soundness of the industry, the situation for nonfuel mineral and metal prices was less satisfactory than in 1988, and low crude oil prices continued as a problem for the all-important petroleum sector, despite some gains during the year. The oil price situation mitigated against price increases for competitive fuels. Although this was unfavorable for fuel producers, it remained advantageous to consumers, including nonfuel mineral producers, processors, and transporters. Thus it cannot be viewed as a negative factor for the whole of the global mineral industry. Global crude mineral output value was estimated at nearly $1,420 billion in current dollars, an increase of 9% over the 1988 level, and an increase in current dollar terms for the seventh consecutive year. Measured in terms of constant dollars, however, adjusting for inflation, the increase was only 4.7% compared with the 1988 level. Despite the prolonged growth trend, the 1989 crude mineral output value level was still 3.2% below the record high set in 1980, which was $1,467 billion in terms of 1989 dollars.

The oxygen bomb-is used extensively for determining sulphur in petroleum, although it has been suspected that the results obtained with this method are somewhat lower than the true varies. In this paper are compared the results given by the oxygen-bomb and Carius methods, the latter being generally accepted as the standard procedure for the determination of sulphur in organic compounds. The Carius determinations given hero were made in connection with a special study of this method.4 Only petroleum oils of the less-volatile type are covered in the present work. Summary and Conclusions. When used with oils containing 2.3 to 0.15 per cent of sulphur the oxygen-bomb method gives results that are consistenly if slightly lower than those obtained with the Carius method. This variation, for the oils used, amounts to 3.1 per cent (on tae basis of sulphur present) for the sample containing 2.47 per cent of sulphur, and gradually increases (as the percentage of sulphur in the oils decreases) to 7.3 per cent for the oil containing 0.15 per cent of sulphur. With the oils studied the presence of ammonium nitrate in the bomb does not influence the results materially.

INTRODUCTION Present-day Mexican mining legislation involves, not only the latest minim enactment (August 1, 1026), but many other enactments and regulations, principal among which are the Constitution, the Civil Code, the Code of Commerce, the Foreign Law, the Mining Tax Law, and. the Civil Jurisprudence of Mexico--the last-mentioned being based in Dart on Supreme Court decisions. Ere Mexican Federal Government is supreme in mining legislation because, among other reasons, a large part of the revenue of the Government must come from the fiscal control of the mines. All circulars, decrees, and rulings that affect the mines not only have their origin in the Central Government but are administered thereby. Understanding methane emissions in underground coal mines is critical for a safe and productive mine. In addition to reasonable estimation of initial coalbed reservoir parameters, it is also crucial that changes in effective stress due to mining and pore pressure reduction are taken into account due to their effects on porosity and permeability. Primary parameters for estimation of emissions or modeling of the mining environment for this purpose are porosity and permeability which can change dramatically as a result of stress redistribution associated with mining and gas desorption from a large coal volume. These parameters affect the emission rates and ventilation requirements, as well as water inflow into the working environment. Stopping leakage, on the other hand, is a secondary stress dependent factor in estimation of emissions, as convergence of the roof and floor strata, compromising the integrity of the stopping, may result in leakage, making prediction of ventilation requirements difficult. This paper aims to examine the effects of porosity and permeability changes of the coal seam on methane emissions in an underground continuous miner section. The models were developed and executed in a dynamic fashion to simulate an advancing section. Through this process, the changes of effective stress in coal, particularly their change paths, on porosity and permeability were incorporated into the models and methane emissions, concentrations, air requirements, water inflow and possible leakage from the stoppings were investigated using a conventional coalbed methane reservoir model.

This volume is a task-by-task review of work performed in modernizing the BMINES finite element code. Much of the discussion is accomplished by cross reference to the user?s guide, which is Volume I of this two-volume report. The computer program described in this report provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geologic systems by the finite element method. The nonlinear material properties currently available in the code include isotropic, anisotropic, variable modulus, plastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic. Load application capabilities include gravity loading, surface tractions, and initial stresses. The element library includes rods, beams, plane and axisymmetric quadrilateral elements, three-dimensional brick elements, thick shell elements, and plane, axisymmetric, and three-dimensional joint elements. Special features include the ability to simulate excavation and construction sequences by means of element activity. An automatic mesh generator is included in order to simplify input preparation.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, neodymium metal of 99.8 pct purity was prepared by electrolysis of Nd203 salts dissolved in a molten fluoride electrolyte. The metal was electrowon in a molten state at current efficiencies of 50 to 60 pct. Oxygen and carbon were the major impurities detected in the product. During operation of the small-scale laboratory cell, a number of technical problems including anode effect, low oxide solubility in the electrolyte, high neodymium metal solubility, reactivity of the metal with the cell materials, and back reaction of the metal with the anode gases were encountered. Approaches to improve cell operation and prospects for commercial adoption of the electrolytic production of neodymium metal are discussed.

"It has been recently suggested that the exceptionally high antitumor and antibacterial activity of natural fredericamycin A (FMA) is related to its ability to spontaneously generate the superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (""OH) radicals in aerobic solutions [Hilton, B. D., Misra, R., & Zweier, J. L. (1986) Biochemistry 25, 5533]. With a view to understand the mechanistic details, attempts were made to reproduce earlier electron spin resonance (ESR) evidence for the oxygenated free radical formation in well-aerated solutions of natural FMA in dimethyl sulfoxide and dilute H 20 2• Little or no evidence was obtained for the formation of the 0 2- and methoxy (""OCH3) radicals, while the detected formation of the 'OH and methyl ('CH3) radicals was attributable largely to mechanisms not involving FMA. These results thus reopen the T question regarding the mechanism of its exceptionally high tumoricidal-bacteriocidal activity. This paper reports on an electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated free radicals in solutions of natural fredericamycin A (abbreviated as FMA) which has recently been reported to be a highly potent anti¬tumor antibiotic (Pandey et al., 1981; Warnick-Pickle et al., 1981). The impetus for this undertaking was provided by recent reports (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) suggesting that the strong tumoricidal activity with high therapeutic—toxic index of FMA was related to its ability for the spontaneous generation of superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals. For example, the suggested mechanism for the formation of 02- by FMA was (Hilton et al., 1986)FMA-OH + O2 FMA-O + H+ + 02-Here FMA—OH is simply the FMA molecule emphasizing the —OH moiety which becomes FMA-O, the free radical rep¬resenting the oxidized form of the drug. While some other highly effective anticancer drugs in current clinical application, such as bleomycin, are also thought to exert their antitumor effects via the formation of reactive drug-based or oxygenated free radicals (Carmichael et al., 1985; Gianni et al., 1983), FMA was considered unique in that only in this case the free radical formation was thought to be spontaneous, rather than through a metal- or an enzyme-activated process (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986). Thus it was suggested (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) that FMA could be the forerunner of a new class of anticancer drugs. However, we noted that while the hypothesis seemed plausible, the reported ESR spectral evidence appeared to be ambiguous. Because of the high significance of the earlier conclusions (Stinson, 1986), we undertook a systematic ESR study of the radical formation in FMA solutions, and as discussed below, our conclusions disagree with those reported earlier."

"INTRODUCTION An exposure of large beryl crystals in pegmatite on Beryl Mountain, in Sullivan County, N. H., was the basis for investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the extent of the beryl mineralization and to expose other parts of the same zone that were favorable for additional beryl-rich shoots. Testing by surface cuts, trenching, and tunneling was conducted by the Bureau of Mines from August to December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. Improve the performance of waterjet nozzles used for water-jet-assisted cutting to optimize rock cutting efficiency. Approach The performance of a longwall shearer equipped for water-jet-assisted cutting was evaluated during an earlier study (Tech News No. 277). Waterjet nozzles were used to direct the solid streams of water that impacted the rock near the tip bits. The maximum water pressure that could be delivered to the nozzles was about 6,000 psi. Due to the "break up" of the solid stream of water, some of this pressure was lost before the water reached the rock. The pressure could have been increased by moving the nozzle closer to the bit tip but) moving the nozzle too close increases the possibility of damage to the nozzle. Study Results A test apparatus was built to measure water pressure at the location of water jet impact (see illustration). The target, a tungsten carbide plate with a 0.013 inch diameter orifice, was placed at the location of water jet impact. A pressure transducer, used to monitor impact water pressure, was positioned under the plate. Water pressure at the nozzle was maintained at 6,000 psi. The distance between the nozzle and target was varied from 2 to 5 inches.

Time-domain reflectometry has long been an accepted and used method for locating electrical faults in electrical cables. The process has, however, required the use of equipment that is somewhat complex and difficult to use. The skill level needed to operate such equipment is high. Therefore, the use of the time-domain reflectometry process has been limited to selected locations and controlled environments. The process, however, has great potential for mine system applications. The ability to locate and repair trailing power cable without removing it from the mine would result in great savings in cost and employee-hours. Therefore, an automatic microprocessor-controlled time- domain reflectometry system was developed to reduce process complexity and skill level needed to operate the unit. The theory of operations is discussed along with the computer analogies used in the unit. The present unit capabilities are presented and future areas of application and research are discussed.

Health surveillance efforts indicate that the development of lung disease and overexposure to respirable dust in underground coal mires continues to afflict mine worker. Results from the most recent round (1992 - 1996) of the Coal Worker's X-ray Surveillance Programs indicate that approximately 8% of the examined miners who had at least 25 years of mining experience were diagnosed with Coal Worker Pneumoconiosis (CWP) (category 1/0+). During the period between 1995-1999, mine operators and MSHA inspectors collected 9968 and 1365 dust samples respectively, from longwall designated occupation (DO) personnel. Analysis of these samples showed that 1970 (20%) of the mine operator samples and 25.8 (19%) of the MSHA samples5 exceeded the 2 mg/m3 dust standard. The continued development of CWP in coal mine workers and the magnitude of respirable dust over-exposures in longwall mining occupations illustrate the need for improved dust control technology on longwalls. Figure 1 illustrates the major longwall dust sources as determined in the early 1990's.4 This article describes the ongoing research to find ways to minimise shearer dust levels as a function of changes in dust control parameters, and research to determine the impact of high air velocities on shield dust entrainment.

This report describes a high-speed streak camera technique for measuring the lateral shock pressure generated by a cylindrical explosive charge detonated from one end. Experimental data show that the magnitude of the lateral pressure is approximately 50 percent that of the pressure generated from the terminal end of the charge for three explosives studied.

This circular has been prepared for the guidance of safety engineers, shot firers, and coal-mine inspectors concerning multiple blasting with short-delay (millisecond-delay) detonators. These special precautions are suggested in addition to those normally followed in blasting, as outlined in the Federal Mine Safety Codes 5 6/ and in Miners' Circular 58.7/ INTRODUCTION The use of short-delay blasting has been proposed for promoting safety and increasing the rate of production in coal mining. Ideally, short-delay blasting, as compared with equivalent single-shot blasting, reduces exposure of the shot firer to dust, fumes, and weakened roof; as compared with equivalent simultaneous blasting, it reduces roof disturbance.

Alternatives were developed to the conventional ammoniacal carbonate leaching-steam stripping procedure for recovering copper as an oxide from contaminated scrap metal. By entraining air bubbles in the leach solution, the copper dissolution rate was increased to 1.5 g/in2 of copper surface per hour, compared to 0.5 g/in2/hr produced by conventional agitation in stirred tanks. Using entrained nitrogen gas bubbles for agitation in conjunction with powdered sulfur not only resulted in rapid dissolution but also simultaneous precipitation of the copper from solution as a high-grade cuprous sulfide.

The Sutherland copper prospect is situated in Floyd County, Va. The immediate area was prospected around 1850, and one of the adits possibly dates from that time. Little or no ore has been mined from the deposit. The deposit is a mineralized sulfide zone occurring in mica schist and consisting mostly of pyrrhotite with minor amount of copper. A magnetometer survey of the deposit by the American Metal Co. in 1939 showed an anomaly that was thought to indicate a zone: of secondary enrichment. The Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled 14 holes, totaling 913 feet, and opened an adit during February and March 1943. No appreciable copper values or indications of secondary enrichment were found.

"The Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust was established in August 1983, at the request of the Bureau of Mines, to conduct research that affords ""...each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of (his/her) adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupational disease"". The Center consists of the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRI) of The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WVU) in association with the MRIs of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). (FIGURE 34) Michigan Technological University (MTU) is also affiliated with the Center in the area of diesel particulates.The Center brings together experts concerned with particles causing potentially disabling or fatal diseases including pneumoconiosis (""black-lung""), silicosis, and asbestosis. The latter is of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace. The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling, and the interaction of dust and lungs. The research program of the Generic Mineral Technology Center explores these scientific, engineering or medical concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniquesand technology that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The work concentrates on five areas (FIGURE 35):"
