Flexible hoses with rated working pressures up to 40,000 psi are used when high-pressure water jets are employed to cut rock or improve the performance of mining machines. Hose failures at such high pressures can result in serious injuries to workers. The Bureau of Mines used fatigue and burst tests to investigate the failure modes of high-pressure hoses at their rated working and burst pressures. Fatigue failure, at rated working pressures, occurred when the inner liner of the high-pressure hose broke, allowing water to seep through the wire wrapping, although the reinforcement wires did not break. At the burst pressure, all hoses failed catastrophically when the reinforcement wires broke. Low-pressure hoses placed over the high- pressure hoses for safety failed to contain water released by catastrophic failure.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments. RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals. Also, miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupational Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include (1) the reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus, (2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers,(3) a diminished ability to monitor the work environment (e.g., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers? compensation and hearing aids.

IN 1944 the Congress passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act that authorized the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Federal Bureau of Mines, to conduct basic research and construct and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and other substances. As a basis for the oil shale investigations to be undertaken in this country, the progress of foreign countries in developing and using oil shale as a source of liquid fuels was studied by the technical missions of the Federal Bureau of Mines. Oil shale mines, retorting plants, and refineries were visited; geological information on the nature and occurrence of the foreign oil shales was obtained; and samples of the oil shales were collected where possible. Samples collected by these missions or acquired by other means came from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Manchuria (China) , New Zealand, Scot-land, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and Union of South Africa. These countries represent a large part of the locations where oil shale developments have taken place. The major omissions are the Estonian, German, and Russian developments.

Six different types of blasting caps, mainly of the type used in coal mines, were evaluated to determine both their 1lF and DC characteristics. Two of the caps were of foreign manufacture. All the American made caps had "no-fire" (0.1% firing probability with 95% confidence, as determined by the Bruceton test) levels above 0.04 watts. One of the caps of foreign manufacture had a "no-fire" level of 0.023 watts. A worst case analysis of blasting cap pick up of RF power in coal mines was performed and safe distance curves were generated.

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legisla- tion and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Switzerland has been prepared from the best information available in ashington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consuler officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Sitzerland is a small country in which little mining is done, yet it has a voluminous body of mining legislation. There are two salt-mining districts in Switzerland; that at Bez, Canton of Vaud, belongs to the Canton but the deposit is worked by a private company; and those at Schweizerhalle, Rheinfelden and Ryburg are worked by a joint stock company formed by the Cantons interested. Iron ore is mined at Gonzen, Canton of St. Gallen, and large beds of gypsum are worked, mainly for domestic consumption. In general, however, although many kinds of minerals are said to have been found in Switzerland, mining operations are irreguler end relatively unimportant. Even during the world war only about 2,500 persons were employed in mining establishments and most of these were in under round stone quarries. On the other hand, the republic comprises 22 Cantons, of which 3 are divided, making 25 units, and in the absence of generel Federal legislation, each of these units virtually has its own distinct mining la Under these circumstances, it is obviously inadvisable to review the mining lars of Switzerland in the same detail as those of other countries which Lave been digested in this series. For the lars of individual Cantons, as well as for a more comprehensive summary of the Swiss legislation as a whole, the reader is referred to a recent German publication." "Eicosanoids and cylokines produced by the pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM) are key mediators for the defensive role this cell plays in neutralizing the inhalation of particulate dusts and foreign microbes. However, these factors are also mediators of inflammation and their uncontrolled release may cause the lung injury and liorotic changes observed in individuals exposed occupationally to mineral dust. In vitro studies have suggested a link between the production of certain eicosanoids and cylokines released from the activated PAM. To this end, we have studied the release of eicosanoids (PGE2, TXB2 and LTB4) and cylokines (IL-1 and TNF) by cultured PAM, obtained from healthy human volunteers by bronchoalveolar lavage under basal culture conditions and following acute exposure to provocative agents such as the endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and mineral dusts including silica. Studies were also carried out in the presence of specific cyclooxygenase inhibitors. The addition of LPS (10 µg/ml) to the culture medium produced a significant increase in PAM release of the eicosanoids: PGE2 (3.5 fold over baseline), TXB2 (2.8 fold over baseline) and LTB4 (4 fold over baseline). LPS also elicited a 2.5 fold elevation in IL-1 from these cells and a 9 fold increase in TNF release. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor, ibuprofen, significantly inhibited the LPS-induced rise in PGE2, TXB2 and TNF but had only a modest suppressive effect on IL-1 release. Exposure of these cells to silica dust elicited a similar augmentation in eicosanoid and cylokine release which was neutralized by prior exposure of the cells to ibuprofen. These results suggest that the enhanced production of eicosanoids and cytokines by PAM exposed to endotoxins and/or mineral dusts may be linked and that inhibition of eicosanoid release is linked to the production of TNF. IL-1 release however is not effectively neutralized by cyclooxygenase inhibition.INTRODUCTIONThe initial pulmonary cellular response to inhaled mineral dust involves the elaboration of potent inflammatory mediators from the pulmonary alveolar macrophage (1). These mediators include the eicosanoids (oxygenated metabolites of arachidonic acid) and cytokines (intercellular peptides) which are released into the alveolar space by the interaction of mineral dust with the PAM surface membrane. The eicosanoids and cytokines promote local nonvascular and vascular smooth muscle contractility changes, elicit the recruitment of additional mononuclear cells into the alveolar space, and enhance the activation, growth and differentiation of lung fibroblasts (2). In this study we sought to examine whether eicosanoid release and metabolism are linked to cytokine release when PAM are activated upon exposure to endotoxin or mineral dusts. Modulation of these pathways through inhibitory pharmaceutical agents may help attenuate the Injurious effects caused by a sustained release of these proinftammatory intercellular factors (3). To that end, we have studied the in vitro effects of endotoxin and silica on eicosanoid and cytokine release from cultured PAM obtained from healthy human volunteers."

The mining industry utilizes a vast store of knowledge, wisdom, and engineering talent in designing mining systems. However, the complexity of the required systems and the presence of numerous variables frequently necessitates raking important decisions without having adequate accurately detailed information. That many of the decisions made in the past were nearly correct, in the long run, is substantiated by the number of successful mining enterprises that exist in the world today. Subsequent to 1940, the disciplines of operations research and systems engineering were developed. The disciplines have produced methods of providing better information to persons responsible for making decisions.

In connection with its continuing studies of the characteristics of alloys and alloying elements, the Bureau of Mines investigated the crystal structure of fused boron. This report describes how the structure of fused boron was found to be rhombohedral by the powder method for crystal-structure determinations by X-ray diffraction. The determinations of the crystal structure of boron reported in the literature were made on crystals prepared by various methods such as electrolysis, thermal decomposition of a boride, or by hydrogen reduction of boron tribromide. Table 1 summarizes the data found in the literature on the crystal structure of boron. The information shows the following: (1) Three structures have been reported for boron, (2) boron prepared by different processes--or even by varied conditions of a process--produces crystals of different structure, and (3) no information is given on the crystal structure of fused boron.

The four periods of test operation described in Report of Investigations 5219 indicated that planer mining of phosphate rock was feasible. Corrective measures proposed for design deficiencies indicated in test 4 had to be evaluated, however; and, before the attempt to design a prototype production model, it was considered advisable to test the original machine under more severe operating conditions. Planer A was modified, therefore, during the latter half of 1955, and one additional period of experimental operation was conducted in the Anderson mine of the Montana Phosphate Products Company near Garrison, Mont., during the first 4 months of 1956. Test 5 was made in a stope, where the phosphate bed had been offset in a number of places by minor faults. Considerable difficulty was found in negotiating the irregularities caused by these faults, and productionwise the test was not as successful as some of the previous ones. Information obtained, however, was valuable in designing model B.

The Bureau of Mines designed a cell having four variable compartments in series to facilitate analysis of multicomponent mixtures. Use of the cell considerably decreases the time required for differential absorption analyses. A solution of a major component is placed in each compartment, and the light absorbed by each of these components is varied by increasing or decreasing the path length of the appropriate cell. Simple calculations then establish the amount of the component present. In analyzing unknown mixtures, compensation is made for compounds known to be present, and the differential spectrum representing components not accounted for is recorded and analyzed.

Provide optimum visibility of mining operations while maintaining protection and comfort for machine operators. Approach A cab with hydraulically powered variable-height control was developed and used on a loading machine in underground operations. How It Works The cab is attached to the vehicle on a horizontal trunnion located near the forward end of the cab. A hydraulic cylinder, controlled by the operator from inside the cab, pivots the cab about the trunnion providing variations of up to 16 inches in elevation. The nominal tramming position of the cab is with its underside 6 inches above the mine bottom. From this position the cab can be pivoted up, or down, so that its back end is elevated 10 inches, or lowered to the floor. (See Figure 1.) The cab encloses the operator for protection against both overhead and lateral obstructions, and it raises or lowers, allowing the operator to select the most advantageous cab height. The cab is angled inboard 30 degrees to the machine line of direction. The operator's seat swivels to allow view of the conveyor during loading. All controls are located within the cab and move up and down with it.

An economical, remotely operated (automated), temporary roof support (ATRS) has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for use on a single, fixed-head roof-bolting machine (squirmer) that operates in low coal seams (less than 42 in thick). The ATRS eliminates the need for squirmer operators and helpers to go under unsupported roof to set or remove temporary support prior to or during the roof-bolting cycle--a task that annually accounts for approximately 20 pct of all roof fall fatalities. The ATRS can be adapted to any squirmer used in the U.S. low coal fields. A prototype ATRS was field-tested at Imperial Colliery Co.?s Mine No. 20 in Eskdale, W. Va. The Mine No. 20 amended roof- control plan, which requires the use of the Bureau?s ATRS as temporary support during face bolting, has been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor.

Sudden, violent failures of rock around mine openings influence access, ventilation, and safety in both hard-rock and coal mines. To develop predictive tools for assessing the potential for violent failure, the authors initiated a comprehensive study using (1) multiple linear regression and numerical modeling analyses of geological and mining conditions at 25 sites to identify the most significant factors contributing to stress bumps in coal mines and (2) investigations of the geological and mining factors contributing to rock bursts in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho, particularly the influence of preexisting structures on rock bursts. Twenty-five factors were initially considered in the study of coal bumps. The most important variables were identified as (1) mechanical properties of strata, (2) gate road geometry and/or gate pillar factors of safety, (3) roof beam thickness, joint spacing, and stiffness characteristics, and (4) stress gradients associated with previous mining and anomalous geologic conditions. In the Coeur d'Alene district, burst damage related to preexisting structures results primarily from (1) sudden buckling and crushing of rock layers where surfaces of development and production openings lie at low angles to bedding, faults, or other planar structures and (2) disturbance of loose ground caused by seismic fault-slip on preexisting faults or previously sheared bedding planes that intersect veins near pillar-stope margins.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop and improve mining methods for mining thin coal beds, to increase productivity, and to increase the recovery of coal. German coal planers and a modified longwall system of mining were introduced into American mines and are bringing about increased productivity and better recovery as compared with the conventional methods displaced. Since the first installation, 4 additional planers have been purchased by coal companies and over 1-1/2 mil¬lion tons of coal has been mined by them, using the modified longwall mining method. INTRODUCTION Except from 1932 to 1934, the growth of mechanical loading in underground bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States has increased steadily. The amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground mines has increased from 0.3 percent in 1923 to 79.6 percent of the total underground production in 1953.3/ The use of new and improved mining machines and auxiliary equipment, together with new techniques in mining methods, usually has resulted in increased productivity.

The Bureau of Mines is cooperating with the U.S. Department of Energy in a directional degasification project at the Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. This project is designed to combine the highly successful underground horizontal degasification technology with surface drilling methods. The objective of this program is to demonstrate that directional drilling can be used as a technique for degasifying coalbeds ahead of mining to reduce the hazards of methane-air explosions in coal mines. The directional hole at the Emerald mine is designed to start vertically and enter the Pittsburgh coalbed horizontally. A 3-inch-pilot hole entered the Pittsburgh coalbecl at a vertical depth of 999 feet, The hole will be reamed to 8-3/4 inches in diameter, and 5-1/2-inch casing will be cemented in place. Three individual 3-inch-diameter, 3,000-foot horizontal gas collection holes will be drilled into the coalbed in a “bird foot” pattern. A corehole and vertical dewatering hole have been completed at the anticipated coalbed intercept. The dewatering hole was drilled to130 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed, a depth of 900 feet, and 880 feet of 7-inch-OD casing was cemented in place. Seven vertical holes for monitoring the extent and progress of degasification have been drilled within the horizontal drilling area.

The continuing high-level performance of the domestic mineral and mineral fuels industries during 1966 was sustained by the longest business upturn in the Nation's history. Spurred by consumer demand at home and the defense production requirements of the Viet-Nam war, the rising trend of economic activity during the year was reflected in the upward movements of the major economic indicators. At yearend the gross national product (GNP), representing the value of all goods and services produced, stood at $740 billion, $58 billion greater than in 1965. Corrected for price changes, the real value of GNP in terms of 1958 dollars was $648 billion and represented an annual increase in economic activity of 5.4 percent. Some 74 million persons were employed during the year out of a total population of 196.8 million, while unemployment fell below 4 percent. The Federal Reserve Index of Industrial Production averaged 156 for 1966, up 13 points from the previous year. However a jarring note in the 1966 expansion, and one which affected the mineral industries in particular, was the increasing pressure on prices and the threat of inflation. From 1961-65 economic growth was facilitated by relatively stable wages and prices and only mild inflation. During the period average wholesale prices hardly moved while average consumer prices rose only about I percent per year. But this long run of relative price stability ended during 1966 when consumer prices rose 2.9 percent and wholesale prices were up 3.2 percent from the previous year.

Australia and the United States both have large, modern underground coal mining industries. Many companies have invested in both countries, and there is growing awareness that technological developments in one country can rapidly affect the other. Yet the ability of technology to pass between the countries depends on comparability of ground conditions. Many Australian observers believe that their ground conditions are significantly poorer than typical U.S. conditions, but some U.S. professionals are not convinced. The author recently visited 10 Australian longwall mines and two room-and-pillar mines. Each mine visit included determination of the Coal Mine Roof Rating, roof support installed, pillar design, and an in-depth discussion of ground control experience. The Australian conditions observed are compared with an extensive data base from U.S. mines. The paper also offers observations on geotechnical data collection, monitoring, and the roles of the mine inspectorate and research community.

A 180° magnetic deflection residual gas analyzer mass spectrometer with a mass range of 2 to 200 amu was used to study the nature of gases evolved during arc and electron-beam melting of certain reactive and refractory metals. The partial pressure of residual gases over molten Mo, Hf, Ti, and Fe, was found to be similar: Water and hydrogen were evolved from the samples and from the furnace components, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide resulted from deoxidation of some of the melts. Argon and acetone were residuals in the system, and methane was a decomposed organic compound from the oil diffusion pump.

"An active list of permissible explosives was published in September 1935 as part of United States Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 32S6, under the title ""Active List of Permissible Explosives and. Blasting Devices Approved. Prior to July 31, 1935."" This list included 154 brand names,Changes in the list that have been authorized subsequently placed 24 addi¬tional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a re¬sult of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Eight permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present active permissible list contains 170 brand names.
