"It is generally agreed that dust characteristics play a role in the development of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Unfortunately, there is a serious lack of information on what the characteristics of mine dust actually are and how they vary among different mining regions, coal seams, etc. This paucity of data can generally be attributed to the serious problems encountered in collecting sufficiently large quantities of dust for conventional analytical procedures.Personal samplers are widely used in coal mines for regulatory and enforcement purposes. Generally, these provide information only on the total (respirable) dust loading in the mine atmosphere and on the mineral matter (primarily quartz) content of the respirable dust. A procedure has been developed by which samples collected with a slightly modified personal sampler can be analyzed for particle size distribution, total mineral matter content and elemental composition, in addition to the standard mass and quartz measurements. These analyses could readily be performed on a routine basis. Shape analysis by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) could easily be included if appropriate shape criteria are established. Extension of the procedure to include the determination of complete size/specific gravity (composition) distributions is quite straightforward provided sufficiently large samples (at least 10 mg) can be collected. Typical sample sizes for a personal sampler carried by a miner for one shift range from about 0.5 to 2 mg.The basic procedure was developed and evaluated using synthetic mine dust prepared in the laboratory. Field tests in three working mines in Pennsylvania and West Virginia have confirmed the applicability of the approach to the real world. Particle size distribution measurements on mine dust collected in the modified personal sampler were found to agree closely with the results of simultaneous in situ measurements obtained using cascade impactors."

1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee coal bed is the most important bed in Grundy County arid is the only bed that has had any sustained production. There is no production, at the present time, from any of the other coal beds in the county. The Richland (Lower Sewanee or Coke Oven) coal bed has been prospected but has never been developed extensively. The Angel coal bed has been worked to a very small extent near Beersheba Springs, Tenn., for local consumption. The Battle Creek coal bed has been worked sporadically near Monteagle, Tenn. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in the Sewaneee coal bed, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 15 millon short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 10 million tons represents coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the bed were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The electrodeposition characteristics of seven binary alloys of titanium have been investigated. The object of the electrorefining experiments with an alloy was to determine the efficiency of titanium separation from individual alloying elements under established conditions. Reported results are only indicative. It is conceivable that numerous duplications of tests might give average maximums that would vary from those noted in this report; however, in the few tests that were repeated, the magnitude of transfer of the alloying elements was of the same order. The results detailed herein are for a given set of conditions. Many combinations of operating variables are possible, and the results achieved under different conditions probably would differ from those reported.

Determination of the aldehyde content of Diesel-engine exhaust gas has proved rather cumbersome and unsatisfactory when carried out in its entirety in field investigations; therefore, studies were conducted with a view to developing methods by which samples might be collected in the field and trans-ported to the laboratory for analysis. Experience also indicated that aldehyde samples collected in water solution and then transported to the laboratory sometimes underwent serious changes in composition if several days elapsed between sampling and analysis. Polymerization of the aldehydes, which takes place readily in dilute aqueous solutions, may have been the cause of such changes. Because of these difficulties, experiments were conducted to find a suitable stabilizer or preservative for dilute aqueous solutions of the aldehydes that occur in Diesel-engine exhaust gas, so that in field studies a known volume of gaseous sample might be collected and brought into contact with water, and the resulting solution of aldehydes analyzed in the laboratory at some later time with reasonable certainty that the results would represent the composition of the original sample,

To improve construction materials for emerging chemical and metallurgical technologies, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the acid resistance of ceramic materials. In the study described here, eight commercial ceramic materials comprising two red shale, two fire clay, a silica, a silicon carbide, a carbon, and a high-alumina brick were evaluated. Samples were exposed to 20 wt-pct HC1 at 50° C for 110 days. The test apparatus designed to evaluate the materials is described. Changes in chemical and mineralogical composition, cold crushing strength, volume, and weight, and leach rates of AI, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Si, and Ti ions were monitored. In general, the statistically significant physical property changes that occurred were small. In many cases, no changes were detected.

A multistage probability model for assessing the reliability of mineral samples following any number of stages of sample reduction is presented. Sample reduction is the process of alternately crushing or grinding and sampling mineral particles prior to assaying. The final multistage model developed accurately describes the ideal sample reduction practice. This model is based on previously developed and experimentally tested models for a single stage of sampling. The problem is approached through the probability distributions for the various stages of sampling. The probability distribution, moments, and moment relationships for a single stage of sampling are first reviewed, and the useful concept of unit moments is defined. In presenting the models for two stages of sampling, emphasis is placed on the physical description of the sample reduction process which leads quite naturally to its mathematical representation. In this representation, crushing or particle-size reduction between the stages of sampling is viewed as a random process with respect to the number and proportion of particles of the various kinds produced. The physical and mathematical description is extended to more than two stages of sample reduction, and the first three moments for any number of stages are developed. In common sample reduction practice the effects of a finite population (finite amount of material) at each stage of sampling appear to be important in describing the variance contribution of each stage. This is also true for the third moment about the mean. An example is cited in which the skewness increases by more than an order of magnitude when several stages of sampling are considered. This is largely due to the dependence of the multistage third moment about the mean on the variance. In general the model and results should be useful in helping to understand, control, and reduce the random errors that arise in the sample reduction process.

"INTRODUCTION The domestic production of potash has made rapid strides in the past 4 years. In 1929 the United States produced 109,820 tons of potash-bearing material, equivalent to 61,590 tons of pure potash (K20). In 1933 to this had increased to 331,110 tons, containing 143,378 tons of potash, due chiefly to the development of the potash deposits near Carlsbad, N. Mex. The potash ores of that district occur at a depth of about 1,000 feet and as mined consist of a mixture known as sylvinite containing about 40 parts of sylvite (KC1) and 60 parts of halite (NaCl). By careful mining the extraneous material does not amount to more than 2 or 3 per cent. Such ore was used in the experimental work here reported.The usual chemical method for the recovery of potash from sylvinite, while efficient in the production of pure potassium chloride, requires,expensive equipment and is costly to operate. It occurred to the Bureau of Mines that ore-dressing methods, which have been applied to other nonmetallic minerals, might be adapted for the production of a grade of potash suitable for the fertilizer industry. After preliminary study by the Bureau of Mines showed that ore-dressing treatment was possible the investigation was extended under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the Potash Company of America, and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAcknowledgment is here given for valuable assistance in the laboratory of R. Legislation and Government Programs.-On February 4, 1977, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued its final environmental impact statement on the occupational use of inorganic arsenic.2 The statement examined the ramifications of the original proposed standard published in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS).3 The DEIS proposed to limit the exposure of employees to no more than 4 micrograms of arsenic per cubic meter of air as determined on an 8-hour-time-weighted average basis; or a ceiling limit of 10 micrograms of arsenic per cubic meter of air based on a 15 minute sampling period. The purpose of the proposed regulation is to reduce the risk of smelter workers developing lung and skin cancer as a result of exposure. A comprehensive study compiled by the Committee on Medical and Biologic Effects of Environmental Pollutants concluded that "there is strong epidemiologic evidence that inorganic arsenic is a skin and lung carcinogen in man."' In April 1977, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) served notice to ASARCO Incorporated that its Tacoma copper smelter and associated arsenic-producing facilities were in violation of State laws which limit sulfur dioxide and particulate matter emissions. This notice followed the Washington State Pollution Control Hearing Board overturning a prior ruling by the Puget Sound Air Pollution Control Agency (PSAPCA) which had permitted a 5-year variance from the State of Washington air quality standards. In December 1977, ASARCO appealed in court the decision of the Hearing Board.

The spontaneous explosion of charges of nitroglycerin placed in deep wells situated in parts of the Ranger and Caddo fields of North Texas has aroused considerable inquiry among operators end others as to the probable agency, or combination of conditions, which causes the explosion.The method now followed, under certain physical conditions of a well, of setting a charge of nitroglycerin and allowing it to explode spontaneously was discovered locally by accident. In certain deep wells where formations, overlying productive strata, cave upon withdrawal of casing, it has been the practice to fire the shot electrically. In some of these operations the electric wires are broken or the firing system is otherwise deranged by pulling casing or the caving of hole prior to the time for firing. Sucn accidents make it necessary for the driller carefully to clean cavings out of the hole to a depth close to the top of the charge, after which in the normal practice, an attempt is made to fire the charge by dropping a ""jack-squib"", fitted with a fuse and detonator, down the well. Mr. R. L, Fowler, production manager for the Pierce Oil Corporation, reports that a delayed shot was thus successfully tired through four feet of caved material lying on top of the nitroglycerin shells.When a shot destined to be fired electrically fails, because of the above mentioned accidental conditions to the electric firing system, much time is required for the driller to run casing into the hole and clean out caved material. It was during the time of such uncompleted operations that the spontaneous explosions first noted took place. Having noted these spontaneous explosions the well shooters now intentionally place a charge in deep holes, which because of probable caves would otherwise have to be tired electrically, and wait for the charge to go off. No detonators are placed with the charge.

A deposit 10 mi (16 km) southwest of the area contains copper and silver minerals in the Triassic Wild Sheep Creek Formation which probably underlies basalt lava flows covering the study area. Abundant basalt in the area can be crushed and used as aggregate, but suitable deposits closer to markets are widely available No sand, gravel, coal, oil, gas, or geothermal resource, were Identified. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Sheep Divide RARE II area [10 mi (16 km) west of the Snake River] encompasses 7,100 acres (2,800 ha) of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Enterprise, Oregon, is located 23 air mi (37 (m) west of the area. Peripheral access is provided by the highway from Joseph to the community of Imnaha, Oregon, then south to the study area by the graveled Upper Imnaha Road (fig. 1).

"INTRODUCTION Ethyl mercaptan (CH3,CH2SH), a combustible organic liquid of the thioalcohol type, is employed at an odorant in many types of fuel gases and dangerous atmospheres, which in themselves are devoid of characteristic odors, to give warring against leakage of such gases or atmospheres into places where they might constitute health or explosion hazards.Ethyl mercaptan has a penetrating disagreeable odor resembling that of onions, garlic, hydrogen sulfide, or rotting cabbage, that exceedingly low concentrations of it can be detected. The of odorants as a beans of detecting leakage of gases and atmospheres has been investigated extensively by chemists and engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and numerous reports as to its value have been published."

"INTRODUCTION The use of gasoline engines as the motive power for lift trucks, tractors, and other types of mobile equipment operated in enclosed spaces, such as industrial plants and warehouses, may create a hazard because of the carbon monoxide present in the exhaust gases of the engines; gasoline-powered equipment should not be used in mines or tunnels. Because the equipment is mobile, local ventilation usually is impracticable, and general ventilation of the spaces is nec-essary to dilute and remove the carbon monoxide. To estimate the rate of ventilation required in such situations, information is necessary on the concentration of carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas and the rate at which exhaust gas is produced under given operating conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present data that may be used in making estimates of ventilation requirements.COMPOSITION OF GASOLINE-ENGINE EXHAUST GASThe exhaust gas of a gasoline engine consists mainly of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, oxygen, and unburned hydrocarbons (usually reported as methane), together with the nitrogen present as a residue from the air sup-plied for combustion. 3/ The exhaust also contains water vapor resulting from combustion of the hydrogen of the fuel. The water-vapor content is not included in exhaust-gas analyses calculated on a ""dry"" basis and is not involved in the estimation of ventilation requirements."

The Bureau of Mines is evaluating the thermodynamic properties of helium and helium-containing mixtures. Twenty-two compressibility runs were made with helium at 0° C and pressures to 800 atmospheres using a Burnett-type apparatus. Data from the 22 runs were treated simultaneously and as separate runs while different functional forms and weighting factors were used. A fourth-degree-polynomial equation in the pressure gives a statistically satisfactory representation of the compressibility factor when the data are treated simultaneously and a weighting factor of Pr-3/4 is used. The second virial coefficient of helium at 0° C from this investigation is 11.997±0.015 cm3 mole-1. The stated uncertainty is the random error standard deviation. Compressibility factors determined by this investigation are precise to better than 0.01 percent and are believed to be accurate to better than 0.02 percent.

Consider a set of points, some of which are anomalous (larger than a specified cutoff value), located on a plane. Whether some or all of these points are clustered to form one anomaly or more or, alternatively whether these points are scattered at random, may be investigated by measuring perimeters of convex hulls. A convex hull is the smallest convex polygon that will encompass a group of points. (Examples of convex polygons are triangles, rectangles, and all other regular polygons.) A set of anomalous points is selected and the perimeters of the convex hulls of this set and all its subsets are measured and compared with tabulated values of perimeters for each subset size. For a given subset size consider those perimeters which are less than the tabulated perimeter. If the number of convex hulls is greater than the maximum number expected by chance, then the chance that any one of the observed-hulls-is a nonrandom cluster is the ratio of the observed number to the sum of the observed and the maximum number expected by chance. Otherwise, the points are evidently not clustered. If many sample points are anomalous, an alternate model defines various configurations of contiguous points and compares the observed number of configurations per unit area with the expected number. Applications are discussed in several fields of geology and geochemistry-including geochemical exploration surveys and heavy mineral spatial distributions--as well as in mining (dust control) and medical geography.

About 300 tons of gold ore per week was being produced in February 1934 by Thomas D, Herron and Con Laster from the old lake Superior and Arizona workings; the ground was leased from the Magma Copper Co. The workings adjoined but were not a part of the Magma mine. The lessees had been employees of the Magma Copper Co, at the time the Magma closed down for the summer of 1932. Work on the lease began in July 1932 on an exposure of $2-per-ton ore disclosed in a drift; after a few hand-drilled rounds were blasted the gold content increased to about $30 per ton. Extensive sampling by pannings elsewhere of exposed portions of the vein indicated that other ore shoots existed. The last work previously done in the mine was during the World War, when lessees mined a number of small shoots of copper ore. In some of the stapes the copper miners had left a quartzose streak on the hanging wall that carried $15 per ton of gold. This material did not look as if it cried values and evidently never had been sampled. The first shipment of gold ore was made on September 28, 1932. Up to April 1, 1933, 3,778 tons had been shipped and from September 1, 1933, to January 31, 1934, 3,125 tons.

Exhaust emissions were measured from 25 aircraft turbine engines using Jet A fuel. Analytical apparatus, procedures, and results are described. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and aldehydes were measured at engine operating modes representing power levels used in airline operation. Carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and aldehyde emissions were highest at idle and lowest at takeoff; oxides of nitrogen were lowest at idle and highest at takeoff. Of the total oxides of nitrogen emitted, nitrogen dioxide constituted from 10 to 100 pct, depending on the exhaust gas temperature. Engines retrofitted with smoke-reducing burner cans produced less carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and aldehyde emissions, and slightly more oxides of nitrogen then engines with standard burner cans.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a quantitative Analysis for pyrite in coal by X-ray diffraction that can be accomplished in little more than 1 hour. To minimize the sample analysis time, data processing has been completely computerized with pertinent output information displayed on a VR12 cathode-ray tube display. Use of this computerized system is not only advantageous during the experimental stages of the pyrite analysis project but would also be essential if the X-ray diffraction procedure is accepted as a standard method of analysis.

The basic concepts of reliability predictions are introduced along with the reliability models and assumptions used for this particular evaluation. The results of the reliability predictions are for ground-fixed and naval-sheltered environments.

The Bureau of Mines is currently developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in unburned urban refuse. One important phase of this research deals with recovering Mastic from shredded refuse using in electrodynamic separation process. The results of this study have indicated that mixed plastic concentrates analyzing 99.4 percent plastic can be consistently recovered from the light material fraction of shredded refuse, leaving a mixed paper traction analyzing 99.9 percent paper. Recovery of the plastic exceeds 99 percent.

A hydraulic scaling rig was placed in operation at the Bureau of Mines oil-shale mine near Rifle, Colo., in 1953. The rig consists of a self-leveling platform mounted on a hydraulic-powered boom. The boom is mounted on the bed of a diesel truck. The equipment provides a movable work platform from which two men can work in safety and comfort while barring loose rock from the backs and walls of the rooms, pillars, and haulageways. INTRODUCTION As a part of its synthetic liquid fuels program the Bureau of Mines has developed a mine in the richer oil-shale beds of the Green River formation near Rifle, Colo. An important part of the work of the Oil-Shale Mining Branch is investigation of techniques for low-cost mining of oil shale on a commercial basis. It is evident that scaling loose rock from the high backs and walls of the mine represents a portion of the direct mining cost. This paper describes the development of a scaling rig for operation in the upper heading of the mine, which is 39 feet high.
