The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a method of using inert gas to prevent the formation of explosive gas mixtures in auger highwall mining of coal. A combination of gasoline and diesel engine exhaust gases was introduced into the auger drill hole using a short section of pipe located at the collar. Gas samples were taken and analyzed on-site with infrared detectors for oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, and carbon monoxide. Evacuated bottle samples were also taken and analyzed by gas chromatography in the laboratory. These gas results were analyzed for explosibility. Coal samples from various depths were used to obtain the gas content of the coal using the modified direct method. Personal expo- sure to carbon monoxide was also monitored. The highest methane level observed was 9.55%. The levels of inert gas (carbon dioxide and nitrogen) were sufficiently high to prevent any ignition of the methane. Results showed that for all conditions during mining, gas concentrations were nonexplosive. The gas content of the coal was about 0.30 cm3/g. The maximum personal time-weighted average sample for carbon monoxide was 20 ppm. This system provides a safe, inexpensive, simple method for pre- venting explosions during auger mining.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract No. H0178069. The purpose of this project was to enhance the Bureau of Mine's Cableless Electronic Survey System use to aid in the drilling of long (approx. 2000 feet) boreholes in coal. This drilling is performed as part of the methane drainage program. The system that was ultimately developed was field tested and demonstrated in actual in-mine drilling activities. The significance of this system as compared to previous drill survey systems is the fact that it surveys without having to be inserted and removed for each survey point. It is so designed that it can withstand the shock and vibration experience by the drill string during drilling. This means an increased productivity is now possible in that drill operators can determine drill bit positioning in a near real-time environment.

The Bureau of Mines improved removal of selenium from zinc smelter acidic gas scrubber effluent by using zinc dust to precipitate soluble selenium prior to lime neutralization. Lime neutralization alone decreased selenium in the waste water from, typically, 6 parts per million to 2 parts per million, whereas the use of zinc dust precipitant gave an effluent containing less than 0.1 part per million of selenium. The waste treatment operation first was developed on a laboratory scale and later was successfully tested at a smelter site on a 1-gallon-per-minute basis. During the research a simple and rapid means was developed for determining selenium in waste water; the technique enabled visual semiquantitative selenium determinations that later were confirmed quantitatively by X-ray fluorescence.

This report presents the results of a washability study of 322 coal mine samples showing the sulfur forms and distribution in the coals. The samples were collected from mines which were principally utility coal producers. Generally, the data show the total sulfur content of the coals evaluated could be significantly reduced by some combination of stage crushing and specific gravity separation. However, few coals could be upgraded to a final product containing 1 percent or less total sulfur. The complete washability data are presented for each sample processed. A statistical evaluation is included for the coalbeds from which more than 10 samples were collected and for the geographical coal producing regions. A graphical summation is presented for the coal producing regions and selected coalbeds.

The Bureau of Mines undertook this investigation to study methods of utilizing red mud residues from production of alumina from bauxite. Pilot-plant tests were conducted using Jamaican and Surinam red muds. Both the carbon-lime-soda sinter process and electric-arc smelting with coke and limestone were employed to recover iron and alumina. Alumina recoveries of 85 to 90 percent were obtained by the sinter process; although iron recovery was about 80 percent, the magnetic product was finely divided and difficult to separate from the gangue. Smelting red muds in the electric-arc furnace produced a pig iron with 98-percent recovery of iron; up to 84 percent of the A1203 was recovered by leaching the calcium aluminate slag with Na2C03 solution. A titania product assaying 96 percent TiO2 was recovered from the nonmagnetic portion of Surinam red mud sinter by extraction with H2SO4. Leached calcium aluminate slags and brown mud (from the combination Bayer process) are possible raw materials in the manufacture of portland cement.

A technique of seismic refraction data analysis has been developed in which a digital computer is used to generate a two-dimensional model representing a layered-earth depth interpretation. Travel times are picked on seismic records by the human interpreter. These times, together with shot point and geophone locations and refraction layer control information, are submitted to the computer on punched cards. A first approximation delineation of each refraction horizon is obtained by a computer adaptation of the delay-time method. The approximation is then tested and improved by the computer through the use of a ray-tracing procedure in which ray travel times computed for the model are compared against field-measured travel times. The model is subsequently adjusted in an iterative manner so as to minimize the discrepancy between computed and measured travel times. The Fortran program is listed in the appendix of the report together with instructions for preparing data cards and examples of results.

"Gravitational forces have been found to be an important factor in defining the particle collection efficiency curve of inertial impactors for large particles. In general it was found that if the parameter G = gW /V 0 2 (g is the gravitational acceleration. w is the nozzle diameter and V 0 is the average fluid velocity at the nozzle throat) in greater than 10-3 the efficiency curve would shift to lower panicle sizes. No effect could be seen for lower values of G.IN'IRODUCTIONInertial impactors have long been used as classifiers for airborne particles. By proper design of the nozzles and flow rate it is possible to classify particles with a fairly sharp cut in the particle size range from approximately .02 µm to 50 µm. Because of inertial impactors wide usage they have been extensively studied calibrated and evaluated. Most of these studies have been experimental calibrations of single stages using monodisperse aerosol particles. However, due to impactor simplicity. i.e. a jet of particle laden air impinging upon a flat plate with large inertia particles crossing the streamlines and impacting upon the plate the impactor also lends itself to theoretical evaluation.The most comprehensive method for analyzing impactors theoretically is to use finite difference solutions to the Navier-Stokcs equations and solve for the velocity components and pressure at node points of a grid placed over the area of interest. Using iteration and relaxation techniques the value of the velocity vectors can be determined at these node points with good accuracy. Once the velocities arc known, theoretical particles of known size can be placed into the now field and their trajectories determined by analyzing their equation of motion using numerical methods.Rader and Marple (1985) have performed theoretical analysis on impactors and have included such factors as Ultra-Stoksian .drag and the physical diameter of the particle in their analysis. However, even with these· factors included, there appears to be discrepancy · between the experimental and theoretical results when the particle size is larger than approximately 4 or 5 µm. One possible reason for this discrepancy could be the effect of gravity on the particle as it passes through the impactor. Therefore, a program was initiated to study the effects of gravitational forces on the collection· efficiency of particles in impactors. The results of that study arc presented here."

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a laboratory and field corrosion test¬ing program to determine materials of construction for the leaching and gas-sparging crystallization environments of the clay-HC1 process in order to more fully utilize the alumina from domestically available kaolinitic clays. Laboratory tests were used to determine the corrosion rates of 22 metals and alloys by weight-loss measurements in these two environments of the process. The results of this laboratory study were used both to suggest metals and alloys for field testing and to determine the effect of the individual solution components on the corrosion behavior of the metals and alloys. Results from the field tests were used to recommend Ta, Ta-2.5W, and Ta-10W for con¬struction of the agitators for the leaching process. The metals and alloys recommended for construction of the gas-sparging crystallizer heat exchangers were Ta, Ta-2.5W, Ta-10W, Nb, Nb-1Zr, Nb-3Zr, Nb-28Ta-10W-1Zr, Nb-10Hf-1Ti, and Zr for the first stage and Ta, Ta-2.5W, Ta-10W, Nb-28Ta-10W-1Zr, Nb, Nb-10Hf-1Ti, and Zr for the second stage.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the development and application of a computer model of aquifer hydrology associated with in situ leaching of uranium. The model provides uranium resource developers with a simulation of leachant flow characteristics in a preproduction or pilot five-spot leaching operation. Various types of aquifers are modeled using closed form solutions of the partial differential equations describing the change in fluid head (pressure) as the leaching operation is carried out. User-supplied descriptive input consists of aquifer, well, and leachant flow characteristics. Numeric and graphic outputs such as isopressure, iso-velocity, and isotime contours are available. A typical application is shown.

HAVIC is a collaboration of investigators from North America, Sweden, and Finland having a scientific mandate from NIOSH, to study the exposure response relationship between vibratory tool exposure and adverse health effects. Five cohorts, the Suomossalmi forest workers cohort, Volvo truck cab workers, Connecticut shipyard workers, and matriculating dental hygiene students and experienced dental hygienists have been under study. In the case of shipyard workers, there was survey and tool exposure data from 1988, although detailed subject testing was only available within the timeframe of the study. The truck cab assembly workforce was an inception cohort that had been followed from 1994 along with age-matched controls. The Finnish forest workers had cumulative health data on a cohort (n=52) that had been studied from 1976. For a subset of these subjects, there was detailed tactometry testing in 1990, 1995, and 2003. Accordingly, there was historical as well as new prospective data for the industrial cohorts. The Suomossalmi cohort was reassembled only for our study, which precluded follow-up evaluation and because of retirement is almost certainly the last time this historic group will be studied. The study features are: • Characterization of the exposure response relationship for hand-arm vibration through a study design, incorporating multiple cohorts, some having existing historical data, • Selection of cohorts to include different types of vibration: oscillatory (forest workers) impact (truck cab workers), high frequency (dental hygienists) and mixed (shipyard workers), • Inclusion of two inception cohorts: dental hygiene students and Swedish truck cab workers, • Methods for multi-site and historical integration A description follows. [ ] Methods The study included surveys, physical evaluation, and a selection of battery of “best tests” (cold challenge plethysmography, multi-frequency tactometry, segmental sensory nerve conduction velocity [SNCV]1,2,3) applied across groups to quantify responses to exposure. Exposure monitoring included exposure characterization through daylong data logging at the individual level. Workers at each site were instrumented with a microcomputer-based Vibration Exposure Monitoring (VEM) system, developed at the Biodynamics Laboratory of UCHC and about the size of a police walkie-talkie, to record user-specific tool-operating times, vibrations, and grip forces throughout all, or a representative part, of their workday. More specifically, data logging methods involved the direct monitoring of work cycles, involving tool operation time and measures of tool vibration, namely the root-mean-square (RMS), root-mean-quad (RMQ), and root-mean-oct (RMO), and grip forces, each calculated per minute. For this study, the questionnaire was homogenized with other vibration studies4,5,6. Cross-translation was directed by the multi-lingual investigators, and then reviewed by the study team. The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure., but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo,, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of intolerability which -accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a nonodorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter's presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

It is estimated that more than 1 trillion cubic feet of methane is contained within the coals of the Mary Lee group in Jefferson, eastern Tuscaloosa, and southern Walker Counties, Ala. Most of this methane will be encountered by mining. Coals of the Mary Lee group are presently being mined at depths exceeding 1,000 feet and will in the near future be mined at even greater depths, where the problem of methane gas affecting the mining operations will be acute. It is calculated that approximately 90 pct of the methane is at depths greater than 1,000 feet, and over half of the gas is contained within only 12 pct of the study area which is under more than 1,500 feet of over- burden. Degasification in advance of mining will increase mine safety, reduce ventilation expenditures, increase productivity, provide an additional energy source, and make it possible to mine parts of deep coalbeds that probably could not otherwise be mined.

"INTRODUCTION The property of the Silver Spot Mines Co. is in the Boston Hill area within and adjacent to the southwest corner of Silver City, N. Mex. The area was visited by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ in 1941 and 1942 during the investigation of possible sources of manganese. The area was visited again in November 1944 4/ to study the possibilities of geophysical exploration of the manganiferous-iron deposits. This geophysical work was performed in 1945 5/, confirmed the existence of known deposits of manganiferous-iron ores, and indicated the probable extent and situation of others.The Silver Spot property was churn-drilled from 1926 to 1929 during exploration for manganiferous-iron ores. The sludges from a number of the holes indicated low-grade lead-zinc mineralization. Lead and zinc minerals also were found on the dumps of some of the old shafts when the property was visited by D. H. Mullen, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines late in 1946. A diamond-drilling project was proposed. It was started in April 1947 with the intention of investigating the best of the known ore indications as shown by the old churn-drill holes and thus gathering new data upon which to base future work. Only one hole was drilled before the project was terminated because of lack of funds and time."

This report gives general expressions for evaluating various thermo-dynamic properties applicable to a two-component system, including liquid-vapor equilibria. In addition, expressions are developed for some of the quantities useful in making thermodynamic consistency checks on phase equilibria data. These formulas were developed from the general principles of thermodynamics and are expressed in terms of the compressibility factor, which is assumed to be an explicit function of the molal density, the absolute thermodynamic temperature, and the composition.

The top-slicing system of mining, has been used ever since the present operating company took control of the property in 1903, the main level and sublevel layout being chanced only as local conditions required and the use of mechanical equipment increased.
