The analysis of water produced with crude petroleum has interested oil producers since inception of the industry. Records of the first analysis of mineralized water produced from an oil-productive formation are obscure, and references to the first use of brine analyses to assist in solving problems of petroleum production are not available in the technical literature. However, many early reports of the Federal Bureau of Mines5-8 and Federal Geological Survey,9-11/ as well as articles in engineer and geological journals12-14/ placed special emphasis on the importance, interpretation, and application of water analyses. One of the earliest applications of water analyses, and still a major one today, is for identification of intrusive waters in oil wells. This may be done by comparing the chemical constituents of a sample of water indigenous to the oil-productive formation with those of samples from upper, water-bearing formations within the same general area. Some earlier investigators recognized the need for Analyzing samples of all waters encountered in drilling operations. Ambrose15/ stated, in part, "In wells being drilled, the engineer should grasp every opportunity to get a true sample of water from each sand. . .," and, "The waters of each oil field are chemically different from those of another field." The validity of the latter observation and the importance of the former one have been borne out by comparing the results of analyses of many samples and noting the differences in relative concentrations of like constituents of waters from the a geological formation in different localities or oil pools.

Horizontal holes are drilled underground into coalbeds to control methane flow from ribs and active face areas and to make gas pressure measurements in coalbeds. Gas pressure measurements are made by drilling the same hole incrementally. After each increment, the hole is filled with some type of packers and allowed to reach equilibrium before a gas pressure reading is taken. As the length of hole increases, more packers are required to effect a seal and obtain a reliable pressure measurement. Problems have been encountered in obtaining satisfactory packer seals due to the friable nature of the coalbed. New methods of packing the holes must be used. Therefore, this project was established to evaluate materials and develop a new technique in which a semiliquid and/ or rigid type grout could be placed in the hole to provide satisfactory sealing.

Heat-dried municipal sludge was applied to a barren burned anthracite refuse bank in 1974. Sludge was applied at rates of 0, 40, 75, and 150 dry metric tons per hectare" Ten species of trees were planted and five species of grasses and legumes were seeded for evaluation. One plot was also irrigated with sewage effluent. The 150 t/ha sludge application rate produced the best overall herbaceous vegetation growth response. The 40 and 75 t/ha sludge application rates produced the best tree seedling growth response. Foliar analyses for trace metals indicated no phytotoxity problems. Analyses of leachate water at the three-foot soil depth indicated that the sludge applications did not impair water quality. Results of the study indicate that treated municipal sludge can be used to revegetate land disturbed by mining activities without adverse effects on the vegetation or water quality.

This instructors guide is intended for use in a course which teaches metal and non-metal mine inspectors to perform surveys for inhalation contaminants in above ground metal and nonmetal mine work areas. The handbook entitled "Handbook for Surveys of Inhalation Contaminants in Above Ground Metal and Nonmetal Mining and Processing Work Areas? is used as a manual during the course. The manual contains a survey check list, rules for determining if sampling is required, a list of most frequently encountered contaminants, a list of candidate contaminants and their sampling conditions, and a description of control procedures and devices. There are several experiments in this guidebook which the trainees perform to acquaint them with the sampling systems.

An overall summary and the individual reports of eight workshops to determine research and development needs in western mining ore presented. Problem areas are identified, and recommendations regarding priorities, funding sources, and prime movers are made. The objective of this contract was to identify research and development needs for advancing mining technology as well as health and safety measures for western U.S. Surface and underground mining. This was accomplished by convening a series of workshops where problems could be thrashed out by producers of trona, uranium, open pit copper, underground salt (from the Midwest and New York), underground metal and nonmetal, etc. In addition to problems, future priorities, funding, and the desicion as to who should be the prime mover on R & D were discussed.

A survey of in-situ methods for determining bulk electric properties of coal is given. Largely because of the strong dependence of coals properties on operating frequency, different sensing methods have to be adopted for different applications. Evaluation of both established and feasible methods is made in this report from the viewpoint of physical set-up, probing depth, and the type of inversion involved.

Conventional flame channelling operates continuously at over 120 db --flame-drill channelling at a maximum of 95 db. The latter process was developed under this program. Individual drill holes are spaced to leave narrow rock webs. Sound and dust passing from the hole are effectively treated by a muffler and water injection.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted a full-scale test of a composite polyurethane-aggregate seal in a hydrostatic chamber at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine. This composite seal consisted of a polyurethane and limestone aggregate core that was formed between two concrete block walls. In the hydro-static chamber test, water is used to pressurize the seal. During the test, the maximum average water pressure the seal was able to withstand was 18.9 psi. Further, the seal began to yield at an average water pressure of only 17 psi. At the time of the test, the minimum seal design requirement was 20 psi under 30 CFR4 75.335 (2005). Therefore, based on this test, the seal did not meet the regulatory minimum design requirement. Uniaxial compressive tests conducted on samples from the polyurethane-aggregate core revealed that both the compressive strength and the elastic modulus of the material were much less than that for polyurethane only with a density of 10.0?12.0 lb/ft3. The significant reduction in the strength and stiffness of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture results from the formation of a soft polyurethane foam around each piece of aggregate. The formation of the soft foam seems to be caused by residual moisture from the aggregate. The moisture also caused the density of the polyurethane in the polyurethane-aggregate mixture to be less than the design requirements. The lower density of the polyurethane in the mixture, along with the formation of zones of pure polyurethane only, resulted in the overall seal density being less than the design requirements. During seal construction, steps were taken to control the moisture, but were not successful. An analysis of the seal failure showed that the calculated shear stresses at failure and the estimated shear strength of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture are fairly close. This suggests that the strength properties of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture along with a weak zone of poorly bonded aggregate controlled the maximum pressure the seal could withstand. At the time of the seal testing, the minimum design requirement was 20 psi, as specified at 30 CFR 75.335 (2005). New emergency temporary standards for seal designs were promulgated on May 22, 2007, with a minimum requirement of 50 psi under specified conditions. However, it will be shown that the evaluation of the polyurethane seal performance as designed to meet the older 20-psi criterion can be relevant to the design requirements under the new standards.

To promote greater use of abundant domestic raw materials in the manufacture of synthetic mullite, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a comprehensive investigation to determine the effects of the impurity oxides TiO2, Fe203, and alkali on physical properties of sintered mullite-forming mixtures. The first part of the report presents the results of work covering a major area within the mullite study; namely, the effect of impurity oxides on volume stability, one of the outstanding characteristics of mullite refractories. The volume stability of 20 compositions in each of 3 alumina- to-silica ratios, which blanket the range commonly found in purchase specifications, has been determined following procedures of Navy Specifications B-15606 A for Grade A high-alumina refractories. Results indicated that so long as 5 percent of impurities are combined approximtely in the proportions of 3 percent Ti02, 1 percent Fe203, and 1 percent alkali, sintered mullite-forming compositions in the almina to silica range tested will be volume stable. A permissible tolerance of one-half per- cent in each impurity oxide provides a range that includes values common in the natural minerals from which sintered mullite may be made. Within the total range of 5-percent impurity mixtures, a greater number of volume-stable compositions were obtained by increasing the alumina-silica ratio.

Under this program two tape recording and triggering systems were developed and delivered for use in the Bureau of Mines microseismic program. The systems are designed to improve the effectiveness of the Bureau owned Sangamo 3500 series and SABRE VI instrumentation tape recorders. The system is designed to capture random microseismic data, digitize and temporarily store these data, start the tape recorder; and then transfer the data to magnetic tape for permanent storage. The system is designed to pack data on tape such that the tape may be simply played back through galvo drivers onto an oscillograph such that a continuous series of analog records, with corresponding time of day information, are reproduced without excessive oscillograph paper waste or the need for the operator to search for valid events.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining 'engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven manganese properties in Grand and beery Counties, Utah. These were supplemented by five samples submitted by property owners. Since all of the ores were too low-grade for use in producing ferromanganese for steel manufacture, some means of beneficiation was required to produce marketable concentrates, and metallurgical studies were made on each of the samples.Most of the ores Investigated are similar in one respect: At least part of the 'manganese oxide areas contains minute inclusions of gangue. This occurrence materially enhances the complexity of the ore, partly by .increasing the complexity of mineral association, but largely through making manganese-quartz liberation more difficult. In such ores, there is a marked tendency for the manganese minerals to be retained as shells or coatings on the surfaces of quartz particles when crushed. Particles of this type represent considerable loss of manganese in tailing, if gravity-concentration methods are employed, or tend to' float, thus carrying an appreciable quantity of gangue into the concentrate, if treated by flotation.Plus 48-percent manganese sinters were made from some of the ores tested, but, in general, intimate association of manganese minerals with silica limited the degree of beneficiation attainable."

The purpose of this study was to develop procedures to measure Bingham flow properties for mine tailings and to use these to predict the possible consequences of a hypothetical tailings flow failure at the Tenmile Tailings Pond at Climax, Colorado. The consequences of such a failure were found to be minimal, and the failure itself highly; unlikely. Values of Ty (Bingham yield shear strength) and np (plastic viscosity) were measured for 10 materials using results obtained from vaned coaxial viscometer tests and triaxial tests.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and, (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coal and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke. This is the third of a series of reports giving results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. This report covers Pike County, Ky., which comprises parts of the Harold, Williamson, Matewan, Gilbert, Pikeville, Regina, Hurley, Pound, and Clintwood quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale of 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate but which may contain reserves based only on geologic inference, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

This report presents a description of the Prototype Demonstration Vehicle developed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. JO 366003, "Improving Man Transit Safety". This vehicle was constructed to assess the feasibility of a set of equipment related guidelines which were drafted in Phase I of the same contract. State-of-the-Art improvements were embodied in such areas as collision survivability, occupant comfort, and multiple mode (on and off rail) operation. The electric battery-powered vehicle carries a twelve man section crew at speeds up to 12 mph. The description of the demonstration vehicle is presented in Volume I. Safety Guidelines are presented in Volume II.

This report presents the results of in-mine studies to determine the severity of dust sources in conventional mining operations. Three underground coal mines were surveyed using gravimetric samplers and GCA RAM-1 continuous dust monitors. Two additional mines were surveyed using only GCA RAM-1 monitors. Data on dust control methods were acquired during the survey, also. The results indicated that cutting/drilling and loading out were the dustiest operations during a conventional mining cycle. Roof bolting, shot firing and product transport were less severe dust sources.

A detailed experimental study of breakage kinetics in a batch rod mill indicates that while the system is inherently nonlinear, the feed disappearance kinetics for the finer sizes and the coarser sizes at high holdups is well represented by first-order behavior. The set of breakage distribution functions was found to be normalizable and independent of particle holdup in the mill. The size discretized initial breakage rate functions were found to be inversely proportional to particle holdup and almost directly proportional to particle size. A linearized grinding model that results from the first-order Taylor's series expansion of the breakage rate expression was found to give good simulations of the mill product size distributions without recourse to any parameter improvement routines. Material transport through rod mills was evaluated by investigating the effect of operating variables on the holdup and residence time distribution of particulate solids flowing through the mill. Identical experiments performed in a continuous ball mill helped delineate the fundamental differences in particulate transport through these two types of mills. Mechanistic interpretations of the observed transport phenomena are presented, and their implications in the context of tumbling mill analysis and design pointed out.

The primary purpose of this contract was to evaluate methods and techniques by which the size distribution acid concentration of mining-related dusts can be measured. One result has been the development of a portable, battery-operated optical particle counter/ multi-channel analyzer system which can he used to determine the size distribution and concentration of mining aerosols. One important aspect of this program has been the development of a calibration technique which relates the output of the optical particle counter to the penetration of the particles through an impactor: This results in a calibration curve in terms of the aerodynamic or Stokes' diameter or the aerosol particles. Using this technique, calibrations were performed on coal, silica, Arizona road dust, potash, and rock dust (corer ore) aerosols. Another task of this program was the calibration and evaluation of the GCA respirible dust monitors (RMD) 101-1 and 301. The results of evaluation showed that the instruments were within the manufacturer's specification of ±25% of the true mass concentration up to about 15 mg/m , if the dust particles were in a size range from about 0.7 to 10 µm aerodynamic diameter. Particles smaller tan about 0.7 µm were not collected by the instrument and particles larger than about 10 µm were lose in the inlet. Other tasks included performing field studies in cooperative research programs with the Bureau of Mines personnel, development of a portable polystyrene latex generator for use in optical particle counter calibrations in the field. The incorporation of impactor classification devices on the inlets of aerosol mass measuring instruments to give mass size distributions, and a study of the density of coal particles as a function of the particle size.
