This paper presents the methodology for final wall-controlled blasting utilized at the Grasberg Mine. The resulting optimized slopes representa14%and17% increase to bench face angle (BFA) and inter-ramp slope angle (ISA), respectively. The corresponding increase in both copper and gold recovery was more than 40% greater than forecast for each material. The Grasberg open pit mine is located in the remote jungle province of West Papua Indonesia, at an elevation of 4,200 meters(13,780 ft).With a diameter of approximately 3.5km(2.2 mi), anddepthover1.2km(0.7 mi),P.T. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI)has mined billions of tons of rock from one of the world’s largest gold and copper deposits. Grasberg Operation and Engineering implemented a quality driven slope optimization program for the final pushback, with the goal to safely increase recoverable metal through steeper slopes, while utilizing existing infrastructure and equipment. This paper focuses on controlled blasting initiatives, blast monitoring, and as-built slope measurement tracking, although many groups contributed to the success of Grasberg slope optimization. The potential slope optimization area was divided into two sections based on geologic assessment: Area A at radial 200°-270° and Area B at radial 270°-360°. Original slope designs for areas A and B specified ISAs of 51° and 52°, respectively, with all BFAs in the pit at 70°. Through continuous development, collaboration and achievement, the Grasberg final pit accomplished a BFA increase to 80°for all areas, and an ISA increase from 51° to 56°in Area A, and 52°to 60° in Area B.

This paper describes some of the results of previously unpublished research studies conducted in underground operations in Chile and Australia, where cross-hole seismic measurement profiles were interpreted in terms of dynamic modulus. This work dates from a period between 1987 and 1990 and the Author suggests that 30 years on, applying modern day technology, instrumentation and modelling methods, more meaningful, practical and applicable results may be obtained.

Precise and data driven methods of predicting and modelling blast induced vibration intensity are created and applied under field conditions on a routine basis today. These models are fed with controlled field measurements of vibration pulses generated by controlled charges under known geometric conditions. With such models blasting and geomechanical engineers can estimate vibration intensity at established critical points in mine bench geometry (surface mining) as well as within semi-permanent crown and rib pillars (in underground mining).Damage to bench walls and destabilization of large-scale geomechanical structures can be partially attributed to high intensity blast induced stresses on the rock mass and structures that define important features such as safety catch berms and haul roads. In the underground environment, weakening of critical pillars in block caving or Long Hole Open Stoping(LHOS) operations may lead to ore sterilisation. Blast vibration intensity can be linked with physical alteration in critical rock mass volumes within themine. Often the potential for vibration damage is estimated by the calculation of a critical value of vibration intensity, derived from a consideration of laboratory measured rock matrix properties. Efforts to confirm the accuracy of these estimates of critical vibration level include post blast excavation photography as well as the visual examination of rock mass, pre-and post-blast, using video camera observation of the walls of purpose drilled observation holes. These methods clearly indicate a change in fracture state due to the blast induced vibration, however further modelling of geomechanical stability will benefit if seismic measurement data can be interpreted in terms of geomechanically relevant strength parameters. The partnership between Orica and MMG at the Dugald River Zinc mine in Australia has led to the first global field trials and deployment of Orica’s Subtek™ 4D™ (hereafter referred to as 4D) Bulk Systems underground bulk emulsion blasting technology. This technology offers advantages over conventional bulk explosives by extending the range of energy and length of explosive column that can be charged in underground production. 4D gives blast designers energy options between Relative Bulk Strength (RBS) 50 - 150, delivered uniformly along the entire column in most blasthole conditions along with the ability to instantaneously modify the energy within an individual blasthole. During Phases 1 – 3 of the project from October 2022 to January 2023, over 57 tonnes of the 4D Underground emulsion were loaded in 17 stopes. The primary objectives of this phase were to reduce hanging wall dilution and improve stope recovery. While drilling and other parameters remained unchanged, the energy selection was tailored for specific situations, guided by a revision to the site's drill and blast standard. The design used low energy (RBS 50 - 70) in holes adjacent to the hanging wall and high energy (RBS 130 - 150) where stope recovery had historically been challenging, such as at the toes of long downholes. Initial results of the project focused on five stopes selected for their similarity to those used for the baseline data set. Although the 4D data set was small, the post-blast scans indicated favourable results for recovery and dilution. This suggests that selecting and delivering bulk explosive with tailored energy levels can improve stope performance.

A joint Federal Government-Industry research project on the effect of geology on the fragmentation of rock excavated by blasting in underground developments was conducted at the CANMET Experimental Mine, near Val d’Or, Quebec. A total of thirteen (13) blasts were studied from November 1994 to February 1995. The analysis of each blast was divided into three stages: pre-blast characterization, including structural mapping, assessment of Rock Mass Ratings (RMR), Tunneling Quality Indices (Q), blast design documentation; blast characterization comprising blast vibration monitoring and analysis; and post-blast assessment comprising fragmentation assessment by digital photoanalysis, calculation of half cast factors and measurements of bootlegs.

Blasters with the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) have developed techniques for opening access holes in floating sea-ice where the use of conventional drilling equipment is impractical. The blasting techniques have proven successful in sea-ice ranging from 8 to 15 feet thick. Previous published work has treated in detail blasting holes in floating ice from 2 to 6 feet thick.

A column of stemming material keeps explosion gases at high pressure for longer times in a blasthole. In general, use of appropriate stemming enables the achievement of the desired level of fragmentation and looseness of muckpiles, as well as the reduction of airblast and fly rock. The ejection resistance of a stemming column varies with the type of stemming material employed. In an effort to optimise stemming at Mt Owen Mine in the Hunter Valley, Australia, a trial was conducted to assess the efficiency of two types of stemming materials. Mt Owen mine relies on through seam blasting and stemming quality is important in this challenging blasting environment. Each type of stemming was trialed in different section of a blast. The blast was designed using Orica’s SurveyPlus@, LoadPlus@ and ShotPlus@ software. Measurement was done using high speed filming of the blast and then post blast information was obtained from analysis of the film. Data analysis included determination of the ejection velocities and percentage swell. Digging rates were measured from excavator production rates. Despite the presence of rounded surfaces and finer particle sizes, River Pebble stemming material showed superior ejection resistance. It also appeared to perform as well as more angular and expensive Crushed Stone, a finished quarry product, based on excavator productivity and heave. It was recommended that future blasts at the mine be stemmed with the River Pebble stemming material.

Due to a lack of success in attracting all manufacturers to membership, these organizations did not survive.

Autonomous fragmentation measurement systems designed for shovels have been in operation for nearly two decades, however fragmentation systems capable of performing in the dynamic conditions of the front-end loaders (FEL) were only recently introduced to the market. This paper presents an in-depth evaluation of an automated digital fragmentation measurement system specifically designed to perform under the dynamic operational conditions of the FEL in two of Teck’s mine sites. As early adopters of this novel application, Teck embarked on a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) trial phase, defining a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) to qualify the performance of the digital solution in tough mining operating environments. The KPIs focused primarily on the hardware robustness, quality of image and segmentation, both day and night, availability of the system and sample ratio. The benefits expected from using this technology include increasing the safety of the current fragmentation measurement process, improving the quality of the analysis, increasing the sample representativeness, and using the attributes of the system to create an oversize detection alert to inform the loading operation process. A critical part of the evaluation was verifying the system’s effectiveness on the particle segmentation algorithm as this element often gets overlooked, especially when dealing with the large number of samples autonomous systems can generate; minor misclassifications due to inadequate segmentation are often dismissed as they might not be statistically significant, however systematic misclassifications can cause unacceptable deviation in the data and limit the intended application of the technology. The system’s performance was further validated through several tests that involved identifying objects of known sizes to ensure the reliability on the consistency of the particles’ segmentation.

"Current regulatory limits for blast vibration and airblast control in Virginia do not specifically addressunderwater explosive testing. Underwater detonation of explosives generates an initial shock wave and a gas bubble. The gas bubble expands and collapses several times before reaching the water surface. This expansion and collapse of the gas bubble as it rises to the surface is called a “bubble pulse”. The bubble pulse generates low frequency vibrations that have the most potential for damaging structures and causing blasting complaints even below damage levels."

Differences exist between public perception of construction blasting and quarry blasting. In general, people are able to tolerate short term inconveniences much better than long term ones. The paper focuses on the public perception of quarry blasting in St. Charles County, MO. This expanding urban environment has seen new legislation targeting preexisting quarry operations that have been in place for many years. A survey was made comprising interviews conducted to gauge perceptions of persons with varying demographics. Interviews covered topics involved with quarry blasting and its reporting methods. The purpose of the interviews was to determine public perception of blasting and how best to report results of vibration measurements. The use of different, less technically complicated measurement scales for vibration and airblast was considered as an alternative reporting system. The question for the industry is, “Has our past haste in adopting complex scientific scales and units been detrimental to us?” In other words, are we reporting the correct things? For airblast, the decibel scale was evaluated against millibar in the public eye. Peak Particle Velocity was also compared to that for displacement. Current legislation in the county is based on complaint levels rather than damage criteria. The complaints most likely not only come from ignorance to the affects of blasting on structures, but also sparse understanding of the units used to report these affects. The past practice of treading softly as an industry has been proven to be a poor choice, and education of the public as well as lawmakers on all levels is necessary. The Mississippi Valley Chapter of ISEE has begun to conduct seminars to this end. One educational seminar has taken place for officials and lawmakers in the St. Louis area, and others are in the planning stages. The focus of this paper is to gauge perception of the damage criteria reported today, and locate focal points for future education of the public in rapidly expanding suburban environments.

Homestake Mining Company's Open Cut Mine is located in Lead, South Dakota, in the northern Black Hills. The mine is within 300 feet of occupied residences on the south end, and within 1200 feet on the north end. Mining began at the north end of the open pit in October, 1983, and blasting related complaints began almost immediately. Noise and ground movement comprised the majority of the structural damage claims. As a result of these complaints, Homestake purchased a recording seismograph and began monitoring nearly every blast. In addition, the company hired a consultant to review Homestake's blasting and monitoring practices. He was also asked to do a single, one-time study of the cracks in six homes. This initial work led to Homestake monitoring all blasts with three seismographs and having South Dakota School of Mines and Technology do a year-long study of crack development and propagation in five homes in Lead.

"Efficiency of blast operations depends on fragmentation, overbreak, muckpile profile anddisplacement, vibration, airblast, flyrock and damage to wall or slope stability. To provide all these conditions at the optimal level, determination of rock mass properties (in-situ block size, joint spacing and orientation) is the very first step during design stage of rock blasting. Image analysis software is used not only to determine the fragmentation level of muckpile but also to characterize the bench face. In this study, an image analysis software was used to determine apparent block size of bench face and to measure blast fragmentation of muckpile. The source of errors and the vital points to be taken into consideration were explained for bench face characterization andfragmentation measurement. Since it provides much better results than previous techniques and it is not intrusive to production process, image analysis technique is considered as one of the most efficient and preferred way for fragmentation analysis. Besides these advantages, there are some weak points of image analysis software. Lighting is one of the most important factors for photographs captured for in-situ block size analysis and fragmentation analysis. Lighting determines shadow formation. In an ideal image, particles are clearly delineated by soft shadows. If shadows are too strong (dark), analysis suffers. Appropriate scale should be replaced onto blast muckpile during site measurements. The location of the scale in image affects the results of analysis. Also, the densityand orientation of discontinuities should be considered during application of image analysis technique to characterize bench faces. In this study, image analysis software was applied in thesandstone, limestone quarries of Istanbul region and an open pit boron mine. All image analysis, evaluations and results were made based on the site measurements."

In the center of Helsinki - capital of Finland - extensive blasting operations were carried out during the years 1982 - 84. At the corner of the streets Mannerheimintie and Simonkatu - in the Forum block - about 125,000 cu.m. of rock were blasted to give place for a new modern shopping centre (Fig. 1). Added to this amount of rock another 10,000 cu.m. were blasted for a transport tunnel to an adjacent underground bombshelter (Fig.2) which is to be used as a parking place in peace-time. The blasting work was demanding and difficult to carry out due to old buildings surrounding the work-site as well as computers and other sensitive equipment installed in some of them.
