The desensitization of an explosive column by the action of a previous detonation (adjacent borehole, deck or detonating cord) is a vital concern to the explosives industry. Previous reports to this symposium and in other places have addressed this issue. However, this work has been mainly concerned with model or simulated conditions. No systematic study has appeared that utilizes an actual borehole environment. Thus the relation between this work and expected field performance is somewhat uncertain. The present paper attempts to partially resolve this difficulty.

Often blast damage litigation involves structural damage which clearly is not blast related. The fact that structures are observed to be damaged when blasting has taken place in the near vicinity of these structures does not necessarily mean that the damage was caused by blasting. If careful blasting and seismograph records were kept by the blaster which decisively indicate damage is not blast related, then other causes of structural damage need to be assessed. These include problematic soil characteristics and long-term changes in climate or subsurface soil moisture. This paper presents the evaluation process required to investigate soil problems leading to damage often attributed to blasting.

The Continuous Reflectometry for Radius vs. Time Experiment (CORRTEX) system was developed by the Los Alamos National Laboratory for determining the energy released in a nuclear explosion by measuring the position of its shock front as a function of time. The CORRTEX system, fielding techniques, and the methods and software for data reduction and analysis were developed over a 15 year period with hundreds of measurements made on nuclear tests and high explosive experiments. CORRTEX is a compact, portable, fast-sampling, microprocessor-controlled system, based on time domain reflectometry, requiring only a 24 volt power source and a sensing element. Only the sensing element (a length of 50 ohm coaxial cable) is expended during the detonation.

BLASPA is the name for a computer code which can assist in the rapid optimisation of blasting procedures in an open-pit mine. BLASPA is based on a mathematical model of the blasting process, a model which has been developing since 1963 as a result of blasting research carried out at the College Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean under sponsorship of the Defence Research Board, and in co-operation with the mining and explosives industry. The model presently includes the following aspects: (1) Geometry, i.e. spacing, burden, bench height, collar, sub-grade drilling; (2) Explosives, i.e. types and grades of explosives, distribution into bottom and top load or decking, size of hole and coupling; (3) Hookup, i.e. parallel or angled firing, delays, location of primers. Computer costs are very small, by comparison with purely spherical AEC codes, so that any number of simulations can be carried out very efficiently. The system has already been used to carry out thousands of simulations for over 40 mines in Canada and abroad. It will be explained how such simulations become a useful guide for a mine's blasting engineer who wishes to optimize his blasting and drilling costs.

There have been numerous international instances over the last several years in which pumping emulsion explosives has resulted in accidents, apparently as a result of increased thermal sensitivity under these conditions. The key questions for the explosive industry are (1) what are the parameters that influence the sensitivity of emulsion explosives and, (2) how do these various parameters interact. To address the sensitivity of emulsion explosives to various parameters, a study was undertaken using an accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC) and a heat flux calorimeter (HFC). The effects ofthe addition of ammonium nitrate (AN) prills and different grades of aluminum (Al) on the thermal behaviour of emulsion explosives were determined. Additionally, changes in pressure, atmosphere (inert or oxidizing) and sample vessel material were assessed for their impact on thermal sensitivity. Addition of AN prills, fine granular Al or atomized Al did not affect the onset temperature for exothermic decomposition, so that the maximum “safe” temperatures for emulsions containing these additives will be similar. There were differences in the rates of self heating, however: AN prills decreased the rate of self heating, whereas atomized Al increased it. The emulsion formulations containing atomized Al produced small holes in titanium vessels. This phenomenon did not occur in Hastelloy C vessels, providing a reminder that materials of construction need to be carefully considered for equipment used to manufacture or handle emulsion explosives.. Both ARC and HFC experiments gave lower onset temperatures in air than in argon. We attribute this to oxidation of the oil phase by air. This result is significant for dry-running pumping conditions, where emulsion is heated in the presence of excess air.

Air transport is limited to 1.4 explosives on cargo aircraft and 1.4S classified explosives on passenger aircraft, so most samples cannot be transported by air. Ocean transport is a possibility, but due to stowage and segregation regulations of the IMDG code, a very expensive one. Road transport is often the only solution, but high explosives require special trucks with licensed drivers. The solution to these logistic problems is solved by creating a 1.4S (Class C) classification for all high explosives, when packed in special containment vessels.

Cast blasting can be designed to utilize explosive energy effectively and economically for coal mining operations to remove overburden material. The more overburden removed by explosives, the less blasted material there is left to be transported with mechanical equipment, such as draglines and trucks. In order to optimize the percentage of rock that is cast, a higher powder factor than normal is required plus an initiation technique designed to produce a much greater degree of horizontal muck movement. This is a significant change from normal blasting practice where fine fragmentation and sufficient muck movement were the prime requirements to permit efficient excavation.

Section 709 of Public Law 95-87, "Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977," requests the National Academy of Sciences to determine if the standards of the act are applicable to minerals other than coal. The Academy has established the Committee on Surface Mining and Reclamation to respond to this charge. The committee is, itself, organized to be responsive to the varieties of minerals, environments, mining systems, and locations that are representative of U.S. mining systems. It is not the charge of the committee to write trial legislation, but to indicate whether or not technology, extant or proposed, is available to meet the standards of the law, and at what cost. It is within this set of conditions that the committee will examine blasting.

The recruitment and retention of future talent into the explosives industry is becoming increasingly important. One potential area from which future talent can be recruited is local student chapters. Many of the student chapters are closely connected with engineering programs. While this makes sense and both entities benefit from these arrangements, there is a trend of job placement primarily in the engineering industry. Before the explosives industry can begin to compete with other industries, it should be determined what is drawing the students into these other fields. The work presented in this paper sought to better understand the collegiate student population from which a portion of future explosives professionals will emerge. This was done through the use of an anonymous online survey distributed to the student members of the International Society of Explosives Engineers, as well as, members of SEE student chapters. The survey contained questions about future job and career plans, ideal job placement, and expectations of salary. The purpose of the survey was to determine what these students expect or require from a career in the explosives industry. This information can help steer recruitment activities and job offers. Through understanding what is incentivizing these students who have accepted or plan to accept jobs in other industries the explosives industry can better posture itself to be more competitive in recruiting from the collegiate talent pool.

The Bureau of Mines is studying blast delay timing influences on rock fragmentation in a series of tests that started in 3-ft concrete blocks, progressed to 45in-bench reduced-scale tests in massive dolomite, and has now included 22-ft-bench full-scale tests in a thin-to-thick horizontally bedded dolomite. This paper discusses the full-scale test results and how they compared to the concrete block and reduced-scale studies.

The use of explosive charges for generating seismic energy has been around for a long time. For oil-field work or crustal studies, when the target of interest is many thousands of feet deep, the surface waves and similar phenomena are of little consequence. In mining applications, however, when the target is a few tens or hundreds of feet deep, the return signals are often masked by these waves and an accurate interpretation is difficult or impossible.

An important factor to consider during blast damage investigations is whether the structure was constructed on collapsible soils. Traditionally, these soils have been considered to be soils such as loess deposits, which occur along the Mississippi River in locations such as Vicksburg, MS. However, recent research into collapsible soils has indicated that a number of soils may also fall into this category. A collapsible soil is any soil that is susceptible to large decreases in bulk volume upon saturation.

In many mining situations the energy released by an explosive is far too high and results in over fragmentation and excessive damage to the surrounding strata. Laboratory experiments have demonstrated that the shock energy of an explosive can be significantly reduced by surrounding it with an attenuating material such as a foam. The effect of this reduction in shock energy on fragmentation has been determined using model materials. A four fold reduction in the amount of minus 8mm material relative to an air decoupled charge of the same weight was obtained for a foam attenuator.

Today I would like to share with you some blasting practices used in the thick coal seam mines of Northeastern Wyoming. I will begin by giving you a general overview of a thick seam coal operation at The Carter Mining Company's Rawhide Mine. I will then discuss the blasting procedures used at this operation. The Rawhide Mine is one of 13 mines operating in the Eastern Powder River Basin of Northeastern Wyoming. Approximately 23 billion tons of recoverable coal lies in the Powder River Basin. The Rawhide Mine is currently producing approximately 8 million tons per year. Rawhide is the 9th largest coal mine in the United States according to 1982 production. We also received the 1982 Sentinels of Safety Award for being the safest surface coal mine in the United States. Rawhide's permitted capacity is 24 million tons.

I have attended two Explosives Engineers’ Conferences in the past 4 years. The first was in Brighton, England with the European Federation of Explosives Engineers in 2005 and the International Society of Explosives Engineers in New Orleans, USA in 2008. At both of these conferences I listened to papers presented on European and English training methodologies and ideologies. As I have been training Shotfirers for the past 18 years in Queensland and the Northern Territory for some 8 years previously, I would like to present our methods of training in Queensland, which I believe is among the best in the world. In Queensland, this training is carried out by a training organisation that is registered by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts under the guidelines of the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF). Not only is this Registered Training Organisation (RTO) required to operate under these very comprehensive guidelines, but also those designated by the Explosives Inspectorate of the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy.

Secluential blasting is one of the most popular methods in blasting. tiowever, it is well known that an emulsion explosive can be dead-pressed by dynamic pressure generated by the previous detonation. It is difficult to gain the expected blasting performance due to tb.e malfunction of explosive caused by deadpressing and shock desensitization. Such malfunction of an explosive is undesirable for safety blasting operation. Voids in the emulsion explosives will considerably affect the performance of explosives such as sensitivity, detonation velocity (DV), pressure-resistance and so on. To clarify the detonability and the performance of precompressed emulsion explosives, the DV was measured. Three types of microballoon or micro bubble ; two types of glass microballoon(GMB), resin microballoon@MB) and chemical gas bubble ; were used as sensitizers for the sample emulsion expiosives. The underwater explosion test was carried out to load dynamic pressure into the sample explosives. The dynamic pressure was generated by the detonation of a donor explosive, and the DV of the sample explosives as acceptor was measured by ionized gap terminals. The dynamic pressure level and initiation interval for the donor and the acceptor were chosen as experimental factors. The detonability was carefully investigated at short initiation intervals taking into consideration the interaction between same delays caused by the deviation of the ignition time of the electric detonators. From these experiments, the following results were obtained ; A) The DV of precompressed emulsion explosives was low compared with that of uncompressed emulsion explosives in all pressure conditions. B) The decrease of DV in the sample explosives sensitized by GMB s was larger than that of DV in the sample explosives sensitized by RMBs or chemical gas bubbles. C) The recovery of the detonability occurred rapidly in the sample explosives sensitized by RMBs and chemical gas bubbles. However, a long period was needed for the recovery of detonability in the sample explosives sensitized by GME! s. It was concluded that the type of microballoon and micro bubble significantly influenced the detonability of precompressed emulsion explosives.
