Arsenic, selenium and mercury species are common contaminants in mining aqueous streams and present significant environmental and health problems. The objective of this project is to investigate methods to lower the concentrations of these elements in mining aqueous streams. A new composite media for removal of these elements of concern from mining effluents was developed. The results of bench scale and pilot plant experiments, using the media, indicated removal of arsenic, selenium, mercury and other elements of concern below detection limits.

"The way alarm information is provided to an operator can make a huge difference in the minutes following an upset. Process alarms are often looked at as a way to help avoid catastrophic failure and serious accidents. But knowing that mineral processing is so energy consuming and that raw material is not consistent, all small upsets should also be seen as a catastrophe because they can have significant impact on product cost and quality.This paper will demonstrate how it is possible to use data from process alarms to provide operators with real time, value added information that will help them take the right decision at the right time and in turn, reduce unplanned downtime by 20 to 80% and incidents by up to 50% (number and cost),and optimize energy and capacity usage.In the era of Big Data, living in a world where we are submerged with information, one of the biggest challenges is to find the right information at the right time.Alarm rationalization projects will often focus on alarm quantity, but alarm quality is also very important. It is possible, by following a simple 6-step process to turn “alarms” into truly valuable information for operators. Based on known standards (ANSI/ISA 18.2 and EEMUA 191), this process will capture the knowledge of the best and most experienced operators and process engineers, and make it readily available to everyone, right on time, when it matters the most.INTRODUCTIONWhen spending some time in a modern control room, it is easy to notice the huge quantity of information that is available to the operator. Modern operation stations feature multiple screens with HD capability. These screens display information like process display, history trends, alarms and events list, maps with geo-located information, images from live cameras, etc. However, it is harder to assess whether all this information is really helping operators: Is all the information relevant? Are process screens overcrowded? Is the information easy to understand? Does the operator know what to do with all the information? Are there too many alarms?"

"Industrial flotation is a continuous and often multistage process, where particles of a given mineral species (usually the targeted one), present in different sizes, encounter a large amount of gas bubbles (normally air) to produce mineral–bubble aggregates, which are removed from the flotation device (cell or column) as a valuable product (concentrate). The bubble content inside the cell is characterized by the prevailing hydrodynamic conditions (known as gas dispersion variables), which in turn are known to influence the flotation performance. Although most researchers and practitioners agree that the relationship between the hydrodynamic variables and flotation performance exists, the lack of an adequate method foronline measuring the average bubble diameter has prevented such studies.The aim of this study is to apply appropriate hydrodynamic variables for flotation kinetic modeling (as a key feature of flotation performance) for a given introduced particle size distribution (PSD). In this regard, experiments were conducted in a laboratory flotation column (5.6 cm internal diameter for a total height of 650 cm), and mixtures of quartz (hydrophilic gangue) and talc (naturally hydrophobic mineral), classified in four different size fractions. The correlation between the flotation rate constant and given hydrodynamic variables were analyzed. Results suggest that the relative importance of hydrodynamic variables for flotation rate modeling depends on the PSD. Finally the suggested hydrodynamic variables for each of the various particle size-classes considered were used to produce single variable models for the flotation rate constant. INTRODUCTIONIndependently of the prevailing flotation conditions, the mechanisms for bubble-particle aggregation and the residence time of the phases inside the device must also be considered. In this regard, one of the most used approaches to represent the overall flotation process is as a pseudo-chemical reaction between a particle and a bubble, whose rate (at a given time) is proportional to the amount of remaining floatable species. The proportionating constant is called the kinetic constant or the flotation rate constant."

The conventional jarosite precipitation process with neutralization by zinc calcine is widely utilized in the zinc industry. However, it has a significant drawback of causing losses of valuable metals like zinc, lead and silver to the jarosite. This comes mainly from the content of these metals in the calcine used for neutralization. As the zinc plants today want to maximize metal recoveries and minimize the amount of residues, this matter has become more and more relevant for zinc producers. Outotec developed and patented in early 2000 an improved version of the jarosite precipitation process in which the need for neutralization can be minimized, thus the metal losses to the jarosite also can be minimized. At the same time, the iron content of the jarosite increases and the amount of produced jarosite is smaller. The main feature of this process is to start the precipitation from ferrous iron after having reduced all the iron by zinc concentrate in a separate step before jarosite precipitation. Iron is then oxidised back to the ferric form simultaneously with jarosite precipitation. By this method, the formation of sulphuric acid is only half that compared to the conventional method and the need for calcine for neutralization can be avoided. High mixing and oxygen dispersion capability are needed in this jarosite precipitation process. Such capabilities are found in the Outotec OKTOP® reactor series. High performance reactors are not only needed to generate high quality precipitates, but also to maximize oxygen utilization; i.e., to minimize operation costs. Realizing the potential of cutting greenhouse gases (GHGs) associated with mining, a variety of approaches has been proposed for their mitigation. The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has been a key mechanism to assist in implementation of mitigation measures. The objectives of CDM are not only to assist Annex I countries in meeting their GHG emissions reduction targets with cost-effective reduction but also to achieve sustainable development in non-Annex I countries. However, apart from China, India, Brazil and Mexico, many developing countries are still in the stages of formulation or realizing CDM strategies. Projects associated with methane capture and flaring are the fourth most prevalent type of CDM project internationally. This research primarily has addressed emissions abatement and sustainable development aims and effectiveness of registered CDM projects associated with coal mining in China. The paper reviews 30 currently registered CDM projects in China on the UNFCCC database and six other non- Chinese projects. Systematic evaluation involving content analysis of documentary evidence regarding coal mining CDM projects is presented in relation to firstly, quantitative reduction of GHG emissions and secondly, sustainable development outcomes. The projects have been assessed via a set sustainability criteria. Overall it was found that sustainable development goals are only briefly referred to in Project Design Documents, Letter of Approvals and validation documents. Varying types of sustainability initiatives have been implemented with weak to strong indications of effectiveness. This has implications for the future effectiveness of CDM projects in the mining sector, the proposed new market mechanism under UNFCCC, and for assessment of projects under mechanisms established outside the UNFCCC.

"This paper describes the ventilation system used in underground hard rock mines in Sweden and Finland, which is very different than the system used in other major mining countries such as Australia, Canada, South Africa, and USA. The system utilizes auxiliary fans with Variable Speed Drive to distribute primary airflow to working levels instead of regulators that are commonly used in other countries. Descriptions about Ventilation on Demand in this system and ventilation regulations in Sweden and Finland are presented in this paper. This paper also quantifies a comparison between the Nordic and the system used in other countries. KEYWORDS Auxiliary fan, Regulation, Ventilation on demand (VOD), Variable speed drive (VSD) INTRODUCTION The primary objective of an underground mine ventilation system is to provide sufficient airflow to dilute atmospheric contaminants that are produced by mining activities. Typically, a mine ventilation system consists of one to four primary fans, regulators to control primary airflow distribution to levels or panels, and auxiliary fans that distribute airflow to dead-end workings via ducts. Depending on circuit geometry, underground booster fans are sometimes used. This system is widely employed in many countries such as Australia, Canada, USA, United Kingdom, and South Africa. However, mines in Nordic countries such as in Sweden and Finland employ a different system, in which auxiliary fans instead of regulators are used to control primary airflow distribution, as well as distributing airflow to dead-end workings. This paper describes the general layout of Nordic ventilation system, its VOD and heating system, its comparison with the system that is widely used in other countries which is referred as “Non-Nordic ventilation system” in this paper, and the current ventilation regulations in Sweden and Finland. The comparison was quantified by doing simulations using Ventsim Design 5 software. DESCRIPTION OF NORDIC VENTILATION SYSTEM General System Layout Figure 1 shows a schematic of typical ventilation system used in Swedish and Finnish mines. The schematic was drawn by Franzen, Myran, Larsson, and Rustan from Stiftelsen bergteknik forskning (Swedish Rock Engineering Research Foundation) and the English translation is written next to the Swedish terminologies. The system is generally a push-pull system. None of Swedish and Finnish mines use exhaust system. As shown in Figure 1, the primary airflow is distributed to levels by auxiliary fans that are bolted to a bulkhead located in the access to intake raise/shaft. These intake fans are attached to ventilation ducts that distribute airflow to all working faces. The exhaust auxiliary fans, which are not attached to any ducts and also are bolted to a bulkhead located in the access to exhaust raise/shaft, then flow the exhaust airflow into the exhaust shaft. A small quantity of this exhaust air is directed into the ramp, which acts as another main exhaust airway. The deepest level is also equipped with booster fan(s) that draw air from the intake shaft/raise and direct it into the ramp to provide fresh air in the ramp. There is no free split in this system. Figure 2 shows a schematic of a level ventilation layout in the Nordic system. Figure 3 shows a photo of these auxiliary fans."

"IntroductionREEFS of Silurian age are recognized in southwestern Ontario, both in outcrop and from subsurface information. This paper deals with the so-called 'pinnacle' reefs which are known only in the subsurface. For the purpose of this paper, the pinnacle reefs are arbitrarily defined as those structures having a height of over 250 feet and a length of less than two miles. This definition eliminates numerous mounds and other broader, more subdued, structures of less certain origin, found in subsurface beds.The term 'pinnacle reef' is perhaps unfortunate, but it is in common usage in Ontario and is used elsewhere for different types of reefs. A new name is justified by the unusual environment and structure of the Ontario reefs, but it is unlikely that any other term would gain acceptance. Rather than propose a new term which would be ignored or result in further confusion and misuse, the name 'pinnacle', as defined above, is used in this paper.Pinnacle reefs have been found over a fairly large part of southwestern Ontario. The known reefs of this type parallel the southeast edge of lake Huron and •follow the strike of the structure contours which circle the Michigan basin (see Figure 1). In total, twenty-five such reefs have been discovered in southwestern Ontario."

"A gravity concentration process has been applied to ores from the Clogau Mine, north Wales, the Tyndrum deposit, central Scotland and an alluvial ore from Leadhills area of Scotland. In the case of the Welsh ore and the alluvial deposit the gold grains in the concentrate and tailings streams have been characterised in terms of their three dimensions.In the case of Welsh ore, the thickness of a gold grain has been shown to be the single most important factor in determining behaviour in a gravity concentration operation. Six indices were used to quantify the overall geometry of the gold grains and those which incorporate a thickness term have proven to be effective in predicting the destination of gold particles within the concentration circuit. It is proposed that the most simple of these, the Heywoods flakiness ratio, has potential for the control of milling operations as an alternative to the established practice of characterising the size of the mill discharge.The effect of grain geometry on the recovery of fine gold has been studied using Tyndrum ore. The recovery of gold by gravity concentration increased from 20% to 70% when the criteria used to design the milling operation was the prevention of over grinding of gold grains.The destination of alluvial grains in the concentration circuit did not show such dependence on shape, and this has been attributed to the effective classification of all the gold grains in the sample by fluvial action producing a population of similar geometric characteristics."

"An Expert System has been implemented to assist operators in applying knowledge about froth conditions in the control of the flotation circuit at Highland Valley Copper. For some time, the personnel at Highland Valley Copper have recognized that froth type is a useful indicator of good operating conditions. However, the operating strategy based on froth type recognition is an ad-hoc skill in which different operators use a variety of terms, features and procedures to identify and solve problems. The first phase of this project developed an on-line consultative system to advise and tutor so that the diffuse expertise could be rationalized and consolidated into a standardized format.The second phase has brought this knowledge into a real-time environment to advise the operators on the floor in identifying froth types and troubleshooting corrective action. This paper describes the steps taken to acquire the knowledge, to design the required system features and to implement the real-time version of this system.INTRODUCTIONThe use of expert systems in the mineral industry has been gaining popularity in recent years. Minnova Inc, Les Mines Selbaie, Wabush Mines, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan are just a few examples of Canadian mining companies that use expert systems to monitor or control their plants. Applications in the field of flotation include Brenda Mines (Edwards, 1992), Mt Isa Mines Ltd (Lacouture et al, 1991), Outokumpu (Karhu, 1989) and Kidd Creek (Burrows et al., 1989).Expert systems are defined as ""computer systems that apply reasoning methodologies on knowledge in a specific domain in order to render advice or recommendations much like a human expert"" (Turban, 1988). The main areas of application are diagnosis, training, process monitoring and control, and design. There are basically two main types of expert systems: Consultative systems, which are off-line applications in diagnosis and design, and on-line realtime systems, used for supervisory process control and real-time advising."

In-stope backfill will cure under effective stress, which develops due to a combination of mechanical consolidation (free draining material) and ??chemical consolidation?? (self-desiccation mechanism). A good knowledge of all the drainage and consolidation characteristics of cemented paste backfill is crucial for a better design of underground backfilling sequencing. From many of the existing results and studies done by various authors, as well as the availability of some in-stope backfill pressure data measurements during and after filling, it is possible of developing a procedure of backfilling sequencing. Hence, the objective of this study is to provide a guide for underground backfilling sequencing in the view of preventing the development of excess pore pressure that will affect both the stability of the barricades and the strength development of the backfill. This will be possible by considering the interaction between consolidation/drainage rate, filling rate and binder hydration rate.

"Abstract- The Century mine in northwest Queensland,Australia, is a major sediment-hosted zinclead- silver orebody, located within the western Mount Isa Basin. Stratiform, carbonaceous shalehosted mineralization is developed within Proterozoic shale and siltstone sequences of the Lawn Hill Formation. CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) discovered the Century deposit in 1990 and open pit mine development commenced in 1998 under the ownership of Pasminco Century Mine Limited (PCML). The deposit contains an identified mineral resource of 105 Mt @ 12.1% Zn + 1.7% Pb + 46 g/t Ag (Broadbent and Waltho, 1998) which is currently being mined at a rate of 5 Mt/y.In December 1998, an exothermic reaction was observed between explosives spilt onto shale drill cuttings from a blasthole. This reaction is referred to as ‘reactive ground’ and has the potential to cause premature detonation of explosives in a charged blasthole with catastrophic consequences. The incident led to a subsequent geological and geochemical assessment of the different rock types at the Century deposit and their potential reactivity with ammonium nitrate-based (AN) explosive products. This assessment was conducted in an attempt to characterize zones safe for blasting with uninhibited AN-based explosive products. A direct result of this study is a set of procedures outlining the use of different AN-based explosives in areas defined as potentially reactive or non-reactive for the different lithologies present. Black shales contained in both the waste and mineralized sequences contain the sulfide mineral pyrite (FeS2), which is thermodynamically unstable with AN contained in commonly used explosives. The potential reactivity of partially weathered pyrite can ultimately result in the decomposition of an AN-based explosive. It was determined that only pyritic black shales showed any potential to react with AN, irrespective of their position in the stratigraphic sequence. Other lithologies present at Century, including Proterozoic sandstone and Cambrian limestone, are classified as non-reactive with AN. This is a geological risk management situation present at the Century mine."

Due to the detrimental effect of platelet iron-rich intermetallics on mechanical properties (particularly ductility) in cast alloys, it has been essential to transform these phases into Chinese script morphology. In the present work, the effects of Mn and/or Si addition and cooling rate on the phase transformation of the iron-rich intermetallics in 206 cast alloys with different Fe contents ranging from 0.15 % to 0.5 % were systematically investigated. The results obtained showed that platelet ß-Fe and Al3(FeMn), Chinese script a-Fe, Alm(FeMn) and Al6(FeMn) can be observed in the 206 cast alloys, depending on the Fe, Mn and Si contents as well as the cooling rate. It was found that the addition of either Mn or Si favors the formation of Chinese script iron-rich intermetallics but inhibits the precipitation of the platelet phases. In addition, the combined addition of both Mn and Si has a synergistic effect on the phase transformation. Furthermore, there exists a critical cooling rate to effectively suppress the formation of platelet iron-rich intermetallics for a given alloy. The threshold cooling rate decreases with increasing Fe, Mn and Si contents. Casting process maps are established to correlate the intermetallics precipitated with alloy chemistry and cooling rate for 206 cast alloys containing various Fe levels.

T-he Ojibway Salt Mine near Windsor, Ontario, produces almost two million tonnes of97% pure rock salt annually. The salt is mined from the middle F horizon of the Silurian Salina Formation. The salt beds have a gentle dip into the Michigan depositional basin. There is no evidence of deformation. The rock salt is buff coloured and has a number of thin carbonateanhydrire bands. Secondary salt crysrallization occurs throughout the mine.

Dilute and remove dust that cannot be confined.This discussion will be concentrated on the second approach, namely, confining and disposing of dusty air.Dust BehaviourBefore delving into actual design principles a brief discussion on behaviour of dust should be helpful. For prevention of silicosis only respirable dust, ranging in size from < 0.5 to 5u needs to be controlled. As particles of this size have insignificant mass and momentum they follow air movements very closely. Consequently if contaminated air around dust sources is confined within enclosures and leakages maintained, strongly indraft dust is automatically controlled and capture velocities are of no concern.Dust SourcesAt metal mining operations ore is prepared for wet concentration by crushing it to mostly <3"" in size. This usually involves a jaw crusher, one or two cone crushers, one or more screens and several conveyors. Dust is actually produced only by the crushing action but it is liberated also when numerous fine particles contained in the ore stream are dispersed by surges and vibration at the discharge of the crushers, screens and headpulleys of conveyors. Furthermore, dust is dis¬persed when the slime adhering to the underside of the return portion of belts becomes dry and is rendered airborne by vibration and by cleaning floors especially where the slime has dropped."

"Significant capacity increases to meet new production demands can often be fulfilled through debottlenecking of an existing production facility, rather than the more expensive option of building new plants and facing new environmental and infrastructure challenges. To achieve that goal, it is important to model and calculate the existing ultimate capacity of each processing plant area, and that of each key equipment sector within the plant areas. This paper describes a methodology of how process modeling tools can be used to simulate the processing steps, how to estimate their existing and ultimate capacities, and how to determine the sweet-spots (minimum cost points) for a plant expansion – leading to a road map of the subsequent debottlenecking project implementation.The debottlenecking technique is presented through a generic work-flow narrative which can be applied to different mineral processing studies, starting with establishment of heat-and-mass balances, drawing a bottleneck diagram, brainstorming capacity increase options, and preparing a cost-capacity curve. Hatch has successfully applied this technique to a number of plant capacity studies, with great benefits to our industrial clients.INTRODUCTIONWith the softening of the metals and minerals prices, and the escalated costs of building new processing plants, it is now economically more viable to improve and debottleneck the existing facilities, rather than build new ones. However, spending new money on old plants requires careful considerations, in order to identify the most economically advantageous incremental steps of improvement and the best potential returns on investment. Process modeling, hand in hand with plant measurements, can identify the best scenarios to balance the three aspects of plant capacity (nameplate, utilization and yield), both at the global and the individual system and subsystem levels."

"Abstract - Detrital minerals of upper mantle origin occur in Holocene conglomerates, pediments and antmounds, and in Oligocene conglomerates in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. The minerals are derived from disaggregated eclogite and peridotite, and are similar to minerals found in mantle- derived igneous rocks such as kimberlite and lamproite, the primary host rocks for diamond. The Green River Basin bisects the lamproite fields of the Leucite Hills (Wyoming) and Kamas (Utah) and overlies the Archean Wyoming craton, which makes the region favorable for diamond occurrence. Lamproite is the favored host for the indicator minerals because unusual high-Fe salitic diopside macrocrysts from the antmounds and from the ~1 Ma old Leucite Hills lamproites to the northeast are compositionally identical. The salitic diopside is uncommon in other igneous rocks and could be a new indicator mineral for use in lamproite exploration. The Green River Basin indicator minerals are eroded from the ~29 Ma old Bishop Conglomerate, whose source area is the Uinta Mountains to the south. No continuous mineral train exists between the Uinta occurrences and those in the Green River Basin. Assessment of the minerals using established and new geochemical criteria indicate that they formed in an oxidizing upper mantle and were transported to the surface by either kimberlite or lamproite. The existence of cogenetic diamond is unlikely based on the mineral chemistry, but selective removal of diamond indicator minerals through weathering and fluvial transport cannot be excluded. Diamonds and mantle garnets are present in the northeastern Uinta Mountains, but they originated as part of the Diamond Hoax of 1872. A representative mineral assemblage from the true igneous host of the indicator minerals is required to fully establish their economic potential. Post-Oligocene erosion and Pleistocene glaciation have hindered efforts to locate a bona fide igneous source for the indicator minerals. Résumé - Des minéraux détritiques provenant du manteau supérieur ont été trouvés dans des conglomérats, des pédiments et des monticules de fourmis de l’Holocéne, et dans des conglomérats de l’Oligocène du Green River Basin, au sud-ouest du Wyoming. Ces minéraux sont issus du démantellement d’éclogites et de péridotites, et sont semblables aux minéraux trouvés dans des roches ignées provenant du manteau, comme les kimberlites et les lamproïtes. Ces dernières sont les roches hôtes du diamant. Le Green River Basin recoupe les champs à lamproïte de Leucite Hills, au Wyoming et de Kamas en Utah, et il surmonte le craton archéen du Wyoming, connu pour la présence de ses diamants. "Recently, the arsenic grade in copper ores has been increasing year by year. Arsenic bearing minerals (enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13)) coexist with typical copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). The removal of arsenic from copper ores that contain relatively high arsenic content is essential due to its adverse impact on the environment and the resulting economic consequences. In this study, arsenic removal and dissolution behaviour of Cu and As from enargite (Cu3AsS4) were investigated using ferric sulphate (Fe2(SO4)3) solutions containing sodium chloride under high pressure oxidation conditions. The effects of numerous parameters including the concentration of Fe2(SO4)3 and NaCl, temperature, total pressure, leaching time and particle size were studied while other variables such as pulp density and stirring speed were fixed at 100 g/L and 750 rpm. The results showed that more than 60% of the copper was dissolved in a 0.1 M ferric sulphate solution under the high pressure oxidative conditions, whereas the leaching rate of arsenic was less than 20%. SEM observation revealed that elemental sulphur was deposited on the surface of enargite forming a passivation layer and the residue was agglomerated. Those phenomena may cause a decrease in the copper leaching rate. It was found that more than 80% of copper was dissolved in the ferric sulphate solution in the presence of 0.34 M sodium chloride under the conditions optimized, whereas the dissolution of arsenic in the mixture did not exceed 2%. XRD analysis of the solid residues from the leaching experiments used ferric sulphate and mixtures of ferric sulphate and sodium chloride showed arsenic to be present as scorodite (FeAsO4).INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been an increase of the arsenic (As) content of copper ores due to the gradual depletion of high grade copper ores. In some copper deposits, arsenic occurs in the form of minerals such as enargite and tennantite. The removal of arsenic in ores containing copper is critical to the production of pure copper and the management of the environmental challenges caused by the smelting process. Due to the environmental risk caused by arsenic emission and the deteriorated quality of the copper product, smelting of enargite concentrates is not an effective method for the extraction of copper (Padilla et al., 2010; Safarzadeh et al., 2014; Long et al., 2012). Therefore, a number of studies have been carried out to develop arsenic removal technologies from copper ores using various methods such as hydrometallurgy (Curreli et al., 2009; Tongamp et al. 2010), pyrometallurgy (Dalewski., 1999; Padilla. et al, 2012) and bio-oxidation (Ehrlich, 1964; Sasaki et al., 2010). Several hydrometallurgical leaching processes like sulphuric acid, alkaline sodium sulphide and sodium sulphate and ferric sulphate leaching have been developed to treat enargite ores and concentrates. The requirements determining the design of the Söderberg electrode columns used in base metal applications are different to those of other industries. There is a strong trend to position the contact shoes above the furnace roof in order to reduce the risk of water leakages directly onto the furnace bath. Tenova Pyromet has adapted its proven electrode column design for application on base metal electric furnaces based on these requirements. The design modifications implemented as well as considerations regarding the overall electrode-roof-furnace arrangement are discussed. Equally important is the management of the Söderberg electrodes to prevent over or under baking. Tenova Pyromet has developed the AutoFurn™ furnace controller to not only optimise furnace operations, but to improve electrode management. An overview of the electrode management control philosophy implemented by AutoFurn™ is provided, focusing on intelligent electrode regulation, slipping and baking. INTRODUCTION Tenova Pyromet has developed an electrode system for use in base metal furnaces, which builds on the experience that Tenova has gained during the past 30 years with electrodes in the ferroalloy and base metals industries. In base metals applications, an important safety consideration is the minimization of water within the furnace and on the furnace roof. In addition, direct contact between copper equipment such as contact shoes and pressure rings and the contents of the furnace is discouraged. In a 3 phase AC furnace, three electrode columns transfer the electrical energy to the furnace bath. Both Söderberg and prebaked carbon or UHP graphite electrodes are in use in base metal furnaces. In each column, the electrode is held in position by a hydraulic slipping and regulating device, a pressure ring and contact shoes. The electrodes can operate in a submerged-arc or brush-arc configuration, where the electrode is immersed in the slag or a short distance above the slag (Mc Dougall 2013). The electrode equipment is divided into an upper and a lower electrode assembly. The self-baking Söderberg electrode is made from lengths of steel casings that are added to the top of the electrode column and welded into place. Carbon electrode paste is added to the inside of these casings and is baked to form a solid tip in the region of the contact shoes. The working platform that surrounds the area where new electrode casings are added, is electrically isolated from the building and each electrode is isolated from the others to ensure the safety of the personnel who perform the electrode casing additions.

"Based on plant mineralogical data & circuit modelling, a pilot plant campaign was conducted at Strathcona Mill to identify options for improving the performance and operating flexibility of the copper-nickel separation circuits. Emphasis was given to options for combined treatment of the two feed streams (primary nickel ore rougher concentrate and copper ore circuit concentrate) to obtain more flexibility in the use of existing column flotation capacities. The pilot test results demonstrated that circuits which incorporated preconcentration prior to column flotation gave the best metallurgical results. Maximum column carrying rates were also related to the preconcentration. Predictions that increased circulating loads from the column scavengers would improve copper-nickel separation performance were confirmed.IntroductionThe copper-nickel separation circuits at Falconbridge's Strathcona Mill produce a high grade (>30% Cu) copper concentrate most of which is treated at the Falconbridge Kidd Creek smelter near Timmins. The remaining nickel concentrate which still contains approximately 20% of the feed copper is combined with other lower grade nickel/copper concentrates and shipped to the Falconbridge nickel smelter. The separation is required because of the limited capacity for copper processing in and downstream from the nickel smelter. Since no nickel is recovered at present in the Kidd smelter, the challenge is to minimize the nickel content of the copper concentrate.At present there are two independent separation circuits treating the rougher concentrates from the copper and nickel circuits as shown in Figure I. The minerals treated are mainly chalcopyrite and pentlandite but there is up to 25% of the copper present as cubanite in the copper ore. The circuits were kept separate because the flotation rates and froth characteristics were very different, probably because of the presence of cubanite and the large difference in the concentrate grades feeding the circuits."

"Use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment was widely known. Bond also described its application for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Bond Work Index efficiency also has been used extensively by industry, but until now without concise standard methods, or a formal guideline, for doing so. The Bond Efficiency Sub-Committee of the Industrial Comminution Efficiency work group of GMSG has produced such a guideline, which is appended hereto. It covers the methods and provides examples of how to calculate the Bond Work Index Efficiency of most industrial grinding circuits. Bond Work Index testing equipment and methods are also provided.Comminution is responsible for a major portion of mineral processing plant energy consumption and operating costs. Bond Work Index efficiency provides valuable means, first, for benchmarking one’s plant performance against others in the broad industry, and hence defining the extent of the opportunity for improvement. Secondly, improvements in circuit efficiency with implemented changes can be quantified and monitored as part of continuous improvement efforts. These two important business activities are thus facilitated, and, in the absence of any other accepted method, otherwise would be lacking without the existence and application of this standard for comparison. While often loosely applied in the past by plant metallurgical staffs, the increased precision offered by this guideline provides much clearer definition of both the conceptual and statistical meaning of these measurements. Even a small improvement can be enormously financially important, but only if differentiated by measurement. This guideline was thus intended to provide industry improved means to differentiate comminution circuit efficiencies. Carbon footprint reduction is coincidental, but nevertheless can be substantial.The next steps are: (1) to establish standard reference testing materials and one or more laboratories to serve as bases for reference testing; (2) to establish the accuracy of relative circuit Work Index Efficiency determinations; and (3), to develop and provide a public data base of industrial comminution circuit Bond Work Index Efficiencies."
