"Emphasis in recent years in western Canada has been placed on the development of large open-pit coal mines, the most notable developments being in northeast British Columbia. However, vast resources exist below the limit of economic open-pit mining, and with world demand predictions of the late seventies in mind, the potential of underground coal mining in western Canada has been investigated. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Plains coalfield of Alberta, and there is optimism that underground coal mines will be developed in the Lethbridge area of southern Alberta.With no existing operations in southern Alberta with which to compare mining conditions, any mine planning and feasibility level studies rely heavily on the engineering/geotechnical data obtained from surface investigation to predict ground control problems and technical constraints on mining. Such investigations have been integrated with exploration drilling programs. Emphasis has been placed on extracting maximum information to provide an over-all appreciation of potential ground conditions and to identify specific ground control problems that could be encountered.The acquired geotechnical parameters are then used to evaluate the mine properties from an engineering standpoint for input into the determination of optimum mine layouts, development directions, mining methods and roadway and face support requirements. These geotechnical studies have been primarily directed toward the longwall mining method, but the acquired data base could equally be applied to alternative mining methods.In addition to the lithologic and structural controls which relate to roof stability, caving characteristics, floor heave and subsidence, investigations have been directed at gaining an understanding of the over-all surface and ground water regime with respect to potential inflow into the mine openings and ground control problems that could be caused by inflows encountered during mining. Experience has shown that soft floor conditions and water control are important factors to be considered in a longwall layout, and without doubt these parameters will play a major role in the design and operation of a successful longwall operation in the Lethbridge coalfield."

"The limited development and application of new technologies to narrow-vein mining is currently impeding progress in the industry to a point where productivity, working conditions and operating costs have reached a critical stage in many Canadian mines.In an effort to foster the emergence and application of new technologies, Université Laval, together with other organizations, has carried out a R&D project focussed on the need of identifying new development pos5ibilities and of facilitating the transfer of technology in matters related to underground mining methods and machinery.The first phase of the study consisted of an in-depth assessment of current practices and problems in narrow-vein mining. The second phase was a state-of-the-art survey of mining methods and equipment, together with proposed modifications and innovations. The third phase of the project concerns the experimental development as well as the principal application of various proposed technologies.This paper presents an overview of the organizational, technical and strategic considerations which guided the University group and it serves as well to introduce a newly-published brochure, entitled ""Underground Mining Techniques of Vein Deposits"", which summarizes such work to date. More specifically, a perspective of technological developments applicable to narrow-vein mining is presented."

Due to continuously growing resource demands and increasing requirements for sustainability, safety and environmental protection on the other hand, the mining industry is being subjected to these additional requirements. Over the past few decades progress has been made in all topics. In 1987, the United Nations published the following in the Brundtland Report: ?development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.?[5] The term ?Blue Mining? means to work sustainably, economically, ecologically, and efficiently while also improving ergonomics, for example by increasing automation. An example of how mining can actively be involved in energy management will be shown. Initial evaluations of underground cavitites were done for purpose of energy storage. The planning and construction of underground pump storage plants both in active and inactive mining operations was also investigated.

This paper presents an overview of the metallurgical work on the Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC), from historical development of the "Main Zone" to present day develoment of the "B Zone". The SLAC, originally discovered by the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) in the northeastern Canadian Shield of Québec and Labrador, is one of the world’s largest deposits of rare earth elements (REE) including yttrium and high field strength elements (HFSE) including zirconium, niobium, and titanium. It is part of a Precambrian, post-tectonic complex of peralkaline granites which intruded along the contact between gneisses and monzonites of the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield. Mineralization of interest at Strange Lake principally occurs within peralkaline granite-hosted pegmatite and aplite sheets and, to a lesser degree, within the host granites, particularly in intra-pegmatitic granites. The highest grade and metallurgically most favorable mineralization is in the upper, open pit mineable parts of the SLAC. Metallurgical development has been conducted under a number of mining companies, and various value metals have been targeted throughout the history of the deposit, including yttrium, zirconium, niobium, and rare earths. Historic processing routes tested have included ore beneficiation, atmospheric leaching, solvent extraction (SX), and metal precipitation. This paper also presents the metallurgical development supporting Quest Rare Minerals Ltd.’s (Quest) 2013 Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and 2014 Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA).

The main objective of this work is to optimize the grinding technologies for tantalum ores with high pressure grinding rolls. The selected ore for this study was an altered leucogranite from the Penouta Open Pit Mine (NW Spain). In the present work mono-size experiments have been carried out using grinding rolls with controlled pressure. The particle size distribution has been monitored in the input and output of the high pressure grinding rolls for each experiment. The cylinder pressure that is transmitted to the particles has been determined. New population balance models are presented for high pressure grinding rolls with parameter adjust for tantalum ore. The obtained model uses the physical description of particles under the comminution action of the grinding rolls. The obtained results are in agreement with other models and the errors in the adjustment are low. The selection function proposed for this model describes adequately the breakage probability of the particles inside the high pressure grinding rolls. The presented model can be a good alternative for simulating a high pressure grinding roll process. INTRODUCTIONTechnology for grinding have been improved for many years, introducing new variables and parameters involving energy consumption, mechanical stress analysis of the compression particles or pressure application for optimizing the comminution (Morrell et al, 1997). High pressure grinding rolls is a modern technology that is proven to reduce the operating costs in full scale plants when compared with other milling technologies. Its benefits on energy saving and simplicity in the process have been studied and applied, first in the cement clinker industry (Abouzeid & Fuerstenau, 2009) and after in mining activities, especially in metallic ore deposits (Austin et al, 1991; Guevara & Menacho, 1992; Morrel et al, 1997; Torres & Casali 2009; Numbi & Xia, 2015). "T.L. Leaching ProcessCommercial PerformanceSociedad Minera Pudahuel Ltda. (SMP) has been innovating in the copper producing field with the commercial application of the Thin Layer (T .L.) leaching process in its two operating division s: Lo Aguirre and La Cascada. Since November 1980, SMP' s Lo Aguirre Division has been producing high-purity copper cathodes at a nominal rate of about 16,500 metric tonnes / year, by mean s of the new route of T.L. leaching, followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (TLlSX/EW). This has been the first commercial application on T .L. technology in the world, and the only commercial application in Chile for solvent extraction and electrowinning.By mid -1980, SMP acquired Sagasca Mining Co., renaming it as La Cascad a Division. The existing vat leaching facilities were modified to apply T.L. in the same old vats. The existing scrap iron cementation recovery circuit was kept running for the continuing production of copper precipitates. The modifications in the leaching circuit allowed shorter treatment cycles with a lower acid consumption and consequently, copper product ion increased from a previous historical high of 12,000-13,000 metric tonnes /year to a new level of about 22,000 metric tonnes/ year . These changes have been in operation since March 1981.T.L. Leaching commercial performance, both at Lo Aguirre (TL / SX /EW) and at La Cascada (TL/cementation), has been presented in several recent publications. Real operating parameters and process requirement s were reviewed in detail. A breakdown for TL / SX/ EW economics was also published based on Lo Aguirre' s performance during 1982(41."

ABSTRACTA drilling cost estimation methodology for underground headings is described. This methodology has been developed for percussive hand-held drills. It comprises four models: (1) a drillability model used for the prediction of the drilling period; (2) a model for the prediction of bit and rod lives; (3) an energy model; and (4) a cost model. It makes use of the uniaxial compressive strength ofthe rock drilled, hole diameter, drill type used, operating air pressure, drilling rod length, dead times that may occur during the drilling operation as well as compressor, air distribution network and drilling machine efficiencies. The application of the methodology is illustrated with an example, followed by a short sensitivity analysis and brief discussion."

"The neutral roasting of As bearing copper concentrates is confirmed well established and promising option for the treatment of this type of complex concentrate. The AS elimination by volatilization allows subsequent treatment of the calcines produced in a conventional pyrometallurgical process, by blending this product with standard concentrates.Several tests were performed using the fluidized bed pilot plant at the University of Concepción with different types of concentrates. Calcines, fines from two hot cyclones and flue dust from the ESP were collected. These materials were characterized using QEMSCAN® and the results used for the development of a mass and energy balance which took into consideration the specific chemical transformations that occurred in the reactor.A physico-chemical/kinetic model is proposed to explain the formation of bornite, chalcopyrite and magnetite. The mechanism involves solid-gas reactions between chalcocite, pyrrhotite and gaseous sulfur that without the mineralogical characterization would not have been possible to propose"

This paper evaluates the application of post consumer glass as a cementing agent in underground mine backfills. The underlying theory indicates that glass is pozzolanic and, when used in a finely divided form, behaves as an activator to generate binding products, thus contributing to the development of backfill strength. The objective of this study was to evaluate the strength performance of backfills when Normal Portland Cement is replaced with various percentages of post consumer glass. The study evaluated the performance of backfills prepared using tailings from three mines. Each backfill was prepared using unique recipes, and were evaluated at cure times of 7, 14, 28, 56, 112 and 224 days. Laboratory work involved visual, physical and chemical material characterization followed by strength evaluations. Results of strength assessment revealed that backfill prepared with glass is reactive and can contribute to the strength of backfill. The results also indicated that the reactivity of glass may be affected by the incorporation of slag within the recipe, the availability of lime and the level of hydration of the binders. The study concluded that, at 15 % glass replacement of NPC, backfill prepared with mine tailings, NPC and glass can achieve improved or equivalent strength performance compared to backfill prepared tailings and NPC alone.

IN THE operation of most mines, hoisting ropes, made of steel, play a very important part in the conveying of men and material between surface and the underground workings. It is obvious that, in order to maintain a maximum degree of safety, certain restrictions must be placed on the loads that may be carried by hoisting ropes, as well as on other factors that may affect the life of the rope. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest ?a new method of defining the necessary restrictions. The three main stresses in a hoisting rope are the static stress, bending stress, and dynamic stress. Crushing stresses, which are also present, are largely indeterminate and may best be allowed for by proper grooving of drum and sheaves, by adequate inspection of cross-over points, and by limiting the number of layers on the drum. They will, therefore, not be considered in this analysis. In the ?recent Ontario regulations, the limiting conditions for the main stresses are specified separately. The static stress is limited by setting a minimum static safety factor of 5.0 The dynamic stresses are allowed for by specifying a minimum capacity factor of 8.5, which has the effect of increasing the safety factor required at smaller depths in a uniform manner. The bending stresses are limited by calling for a drum-dia./rope-dia. ratio of at least 60 for ropes up to 1 inch in diameter and 80 for ropes greater than 1 inch in diameter. One disadvantage of this method is that the controls are too rigid and do not allow the operator sufficient freedom of action within safe limits.

Minerals processing organisations will be more and more under intense competitive pressure. Major changes are being experienced with intense respect to resources, processes, production strategies and markets. As result of international competition, only the most productive and cost-effective operations will survive. That is why operators in the minerals industry have always aimed to obtain better performance from their processes along the mineral extraction cycle starting from exploration up to the smelting step if any. A principal ingredient and perhaps the most important one in the process of evolution toward improved productivity is the achievement and implementation of an error-free production synonym of an ignorance-free operation. This is, at the same time, a guarantee for quality, a minimising factor for waste materials production, handling and disposal, and a maximising factor for labour utilisation. The notion of ?error or ignorance-free? -usually identified as a ?made in Japan? manufacturing mythology, will sound, at first impression, like a pious ideal, to be striven for but impossible to attain. Nevertheless, the introduction of measurement and detection technology in the minerals industry along the last century should benefit from the today?s sensors and control systems that explosively expanded beyond their traditional production base into far-ranging commercial ventures. The fastness and spread of those technologies will play an important role in the survival of innovative plants. Their role in information assimilation, and control of operations to maintain an error-free production environment, will help many plants to stay effective on their competitive course. In this paper the feasibility of the zero process ignorance concept as applied to the comminution circuits will be discussed and the challenge behind this ambitious move toward improved productivity will be outlined. Examples of pre-competitive R&D projects started at COREM in order to fulfil this prerogative will be presented.

"The East Bull Lake gabbro-anorthosite intrusion is one of several Early Proterozoic layered mafic intrusions occurring along the Southern Province - Superior Province boundary in the Elliot Lake - Sudbury region, Ontario. The base of the East Bull Lake intrusion comprises abundant plagioclase cumulates (Leucogabbronorite Zone) hosting two distinct styles of sulfide mineralization: (1) disseminated magmatic sulfides, and (2) disseminated to massive, structurally controlled sulfides. Both types of mineralization are enriched in Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni. The host rocks to the sulfide mineralization display a range of interesting features including nodular textures, dendriticpegmatitic mafic pods, inclusion-rich zones (pyroxenite, anorthosite and granitic inclusions) and magmatic breccias. Disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite occur in concentrations of up to 100/0 within erratically distributed gossan pods near the base of the intrusion. The sulfides were originally precipitated from intercumulus liquids, but were subsequently recrystallized and locally remobilized along fractures during the major period of metamorphism and deformation that affected the East Bull Lake intrusion. The base- and precious-metal tenor of the structurally controlled sulfides can be explained by extensive remobilization and reconcentration of the pre-existing magmatic sulfides in the vicinity of a major shear zone. Both styles of sulfide mineralization locally contain ppm abundances of POE + Au and are generally Pd- and Cu-rich, although both display large variations in Pd:Pt and Cu:Ni ratios. The magmatic sulfides are more strongly enriched in POE and contain up to 1470 ppm Pd in 100% sulfide. Several factors, including source characteristics, magmatic processes (crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization) and post-magmatic interaction with hydrous fluid, have influenced the present distribution of POE, Cu and Ni in the East Bull Lake intrusion.The magmatic sulfide occurrences from the East Bull Lake intrusion compare favorably with marginal-type deposits from rift-related intrusions (Noril'sk-Talnakh region, Siberia; Duluth Complex, U.S.A.) in terms of their distribution, but are most similar to reef-type POE deposits with respect to their base- and precious-metal geochemistry. The combination of high POE tenors and large tonnages that is observed for the POE-Cu-Ni mineralization from the East Bull Lake intrusion suggests that a good potential exists for the presence of economic concentrations of Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni in the intrusion. On a global scale, the East Bull Lake intrusion is part of a suite of Early Proterozoic plutons, many of which contain significant volumes of stratiform and/or marginaltype POE-Cu-Ni mineralization. The East Bull Lake intrusion is also one of the oldest mineralized intrusions derived from a sub-Superior Province mantle source region that has given rise to several significant magmatic POE-Cu-Ni deposits during the period 2.5 Ga to 1.1 Ga."

This paper, after a brief introduction to the mineralization and structure in the mine area, outlines the methods now being employed for grade control at Bethlehem Copper Corporation. Sampling, subgrade drilling, blasting and the actual outlining of the ore are among the topics covered. The paper concludes with a summary of the results obtained, showing a reduction in dilution and an improvement in the grade of the copper ore going to the mill. Introduction T HE Bethlehem property is located in southern British Columbia in the Highland Valley about 30 miles southeast of the town of Ashcroft. The property is located within the Guichon batholith. The rock comprising the batholith is a massive, coarse-textured diorite, which, at Bethlehem, has been intruded by a younger quartz diorite, porphyries and breccia, referred to as the "Younger Complex." Mineralization, consisting of chalcopyrite and bornite with minor pyrite and molybdenite, occurs as disseminations, fracture fillings and coarse blebs. "IntroductionThe western region of North America has long been considered a dynamic market supporting such diversified industries as lumber, agriculture, cement, and electronics. In recent years however, the region has also been the focus of a great deal of activity in the extender and filler mineral s business from companies seeking to position themselves to take advantage of the large demand for these materials both here and abroad.Extender and Filler MineralsExtender and filler mineral s include 15different products used in numerous end uses. The nine most important extenders and fillers are listed in Table I. These products range in price from under $50 a ton to over $4,000 a ton and basically represent the following three different types of minerals:Particulate products-Calcium carbonate; Kaolin; Silica.Platy minerals-Talc (Montana, Canada); Mica.Fibrous minerals-Talc (California, Eastern U.S .A.);Wollastonite.What distinguishes these products from other industrial minerals? For one thing, an important feature of extender and filler minerals is that they are used primarily in such consumer non-durable good s as paper, paint, plastics, sealants, and rubber which traditionally do not react as violently to swings in the economic cycle. In addition, these minerals are sold principally on key physical properties, usually brightness, particle size and shape, oil absorption, and hardness. As part of the physical minerals segment of industrial minerals, extenders and fillers are traditionally the most stable group and typically the most profitable. Studies by C.H. Kline over the past decade on extender and filler minerals has revealed historic average profitability (expressed as a percentage on sales) nearly double that of most other industrial mineral s.The demand for these minerals in the western region (Fig. 1), closely follow s the areas of greatest population concentration. These markets include pulp and paper, mainly in the Pacific Northwest, and paint, around Los Angeles and San Fran cisco. Other significant markets for extender and filler minerals in western North America include joint cements, carpet backing, and plastics, mainly PVC pipe."

"Pillars left to ensure the stability of major underground coal mine infrastructure (shafts, drifts) often contain substantial quantities of coal. Recovery of this coal is an efficient use of the resource, but often presents safety hazards; pillar extraction destabilizes the protected structure, and can make its use dangerous. In this study, the stability of an active shaft at an underground coal mine situated in the Soma- Manisa region of Turkey was investigated during the recovery of the coal in the shaft safety pillar.A proprietary three-dimensional finite element analysis model (ANSYS) was used. An elastic-plastic material model utilizing the Drucker-Prager failure criterion was employed. The three-dimensional Drucker-Prager formulation was preferred over the two-dimensional Mohr-Coulomb model because it was thought to more accurately represent the strain hardening behaviour shown by most geologic materials.Stresses and deformations formed around the shaft support were estimated using the model and the results were verified by in situ observations. The results show that stress distributions around the shaft and the subsidence of the shaft support are influenced by the location location of the extraction front and the break angle of the overlying material."

For slope stability, knowledge of major and minor discontinuity sets that form the rock mass fabric is paramount for pit slope designs. Due to the increased awareness of health and safety in mining projects, efforts have been made to limit structural mapping in order to minimize the risk to personnel associated with approaching potentially unstable areas. Recognizing the importance of such safety precautions, Golder Associates Ltd. is applying a combination of techniques including 3D photogrammetry, conventional mapping and drilling with core orientation to enhance structural data collection. Photogrammetry uses digital photographs to produce a virtual model of a rock mass surface. The application of these techniques will be exemplified through an expansion design of an existing open pit. A comparison of stereonets obtained using these techniques showed some agreements, but also highlighted limitations of each method. The application of photogrammetry was found to be very useful in complementing the other existing techniques.

"This paper deals with the organization of the central office technical areas and the role played during the feasibility studies, construction and operating phases of Les Mines Selbaie.HistoryThe Engineering Department was originally formed as a part of the Exploration Department, to examine the feasibility of advanced exploration prospects being brought to the company. In 1968, with the discovery of the South Bay property in northwestern Ontario, the department became part of a Mining Division and was expanded, so that it could provide more advanced mine feasibility studies, control of construction engineering and procurement and initial mine design. As is generally the case, the mine design function was handled with in-house capability, while plant, mill and const ruction functions used outside consultants.The 1974 discovery of the Selbaie deposits, started a period o f growth in the capabilities o f the department. The complex nature of these deposits, required that skills were added in the mining, metallurgical and plant areas. During the early feasibility study period these skills were provided by the engineering company of the parent group, but when it was realized that production from the deposits was likely, permanent staff was added."

"Since all gold mills must sooner or later be cleaned up for permanent shutdown it was felt that a record of what was done at one mill might be of some help to those who will have to do the same job in the future,In cleaning up the mill of Delnite Mines Limited, I had an advantage that most mill superintendents will not have in that I started up the mill and was there until it was shut down, It was also known for two years approximately when the shutdown would be and for a year almost the exact time. This, of course, made careful planning possible and enabled me to get advance information that wouldn't have been available had the shutdown come unexpectedly,Early in 1964 calculation of ore reserves and the known number of working places available indicated that the mine would run out of ore sometime in August or September but not later than October, The time of course would vary with the number of competent miners that could be retained until the shutdown. Since the mining method used exclusively on the ore then remaining was cut and fill, it was known that once mining operations ceased it would require at most two days to crush and grind the last of the ore.In March 1 964 I took samples of the concrete floor under the precipitation presses, in the flux room and furnace room of the refinery and from the assays obtained proved that there would be no profit in breaking up the concrete to recover the gold from it, Samples taken from the top half inch of the concrete floors assayed less than 0, 10 oz per ton,"
