Reflective in-seam wave detection has the advantages of a far detection range and wide applicability. It has been successfully used in detection of many abnormal geological structures in work-faces, such as faults and collapse columns. However, a reflective in-seam wave is a dispersion wave. It has weak energy and is always covered by the direct in-seam wave. In the past, underground seismic explorations were not able to image the opposite roadway using reflective in-seam waves. To solve this problem, we propose a new method of reflective in-seam wave imaging based on adaptive dispersion filtering. This method processes the reflective in-seam wave using a filter with the parameter of transmission distance. The degree of similarity of the filtered and the explosion signal is used to estimate the transmission distance and image the reflective objects. We test and verify this method using real underground seismic data. This research is helpful for the detection of coal mine goafs and abandoned roadways in work-faces or in front of tunneling ends.

The paper examines the problems that arise in undertaking socio-economic impact studies to meet the requirements of environmental-impact legislation governing new mine development or expansion. An approach to undertaking socioeconomic impact studies is outlined, responses to specific problems are discussed and ways in which the mining company can use these studies to meet its general objectives are explored. The paper concludes by examining how a socio-economic study, as required by legislation, can be used to assist the mining company in achieving some general objectives it will have in developing a mine.

In non-ferrous metal smelting, when the concentrate entering the furnace contains high levels of moisture, energy requirement for heating and drying increases and large volumes of exhaust are produced. To solve this problem, rotary dryers and flash dryers using direct heating, and also steam dryers using indirect heating have all been used for drying concentrate. The focus of this paper is to present the development and current applications of the Kumera Rotary steam dryer. The advantages of this technology are numerous, including reduced heating requirements, environmental friendliness, operation reliability and minimum maintenance needs; making it a top choice for drying concentrate.

The determination of surface tensions and contact angles of coal particles is of great interest for coal beneficiation processes such as froth flotation and oil agglomeration and for the inclusion of coal particles into oil droplets as a means of enriching the fuel. Methods for contact-angle measurements on small irregularly shaped solid particles have not been available in the past. Therefore, we recently developed a novel technique to determine contact angles and surf ace tensions of coal particles. Two types of bituminous and one type of subbituminous coal particles have been tested. The technique used is called the freezing-front technique and it considers the behaviour of the test particles (in the range of 20-250 pm) at the solidification front of carefully selected, well-defined solidifying melts (matrix materials) such as thymol, biphenyl, naphthalene, salol and 2-phenyl phenol.The results show that the technique works well, providing quantitative and detailed information on the wettability of coal particles. The sensitivity of the method is so high that a difference in contact angle of approximately 4 degrees between the smaller and the larger particles is clearly registered.

"A conductivity probe mounted in the shell of the mill has been used to measure the behaviour of the load in the mill as a function of operating variables. It was found that certain properties of the conductivity signal correlate strongly with the per cent solids of the slurry passing through the mill; in particular the angular location ?D of the shoulder of the load is an increasing function of the per cent solids. A method for measuring the viscosity of the pulp discharging from the mill has also been developed. The use of the measurements in mill control is illustrated by simulating various control strategies for open circuit milling. It is shown that the use of ?D allows very tight but imprecise control of the slurry rheology in the mill, while the use of viscosity is subject to severe limitations in speed of response. A cascade control system involving both measurements provides adequate control of slurry rheology within the mill. Applications to closed circuit milling are discussed.IntroductionMultivariable control of milling circuits continues to receive a lot of attention in the literature. Hulbert and co-workers and Niemi, et al. have described the use of Inverse Nyquist Array (INA) techniques while Herbst has recently described the use of Optimal Control. It is significant that in neither of these three projects was any variable associated with the grinding mill itself (e.g. power or properties of the mill discharge) used in the control strategy. Pauw, et al.do, however, use mill power in their multivariable peak-seeking controller for pebble-mill control. Little work has been published on the use of measurements of the properties of the slurry being discharged from grinding mills, in spite of the fact that milling efficiency is known to be strongly affected by slurry rheology».Moys has recently developed a technique for measuring the dynamic behaviour of the load in the grinding mill. This method involves the monitoring of the response of a conductivity probe mounted in the shell of the mill which gives a measurement of the orientation of the load inside the mill. It was found that the load behaviour was strongly influenced by slurry rheology. In this project a technique was also developed for the measurement of the viscosity of the slurry in the mill discharge. It was, thus, decided that it would be worth investigating the use of these measurements in mill control schemes since direct control of the slurry rheology in the mill must inevitably increase the efficiency and productivity of the grinding circuit as a whole.This will be done by using the dynamic responses measured by Moys and Montini to simulate the behaviour of an open circuit ball mill. While the control of open circuit mills is of little interest, this simulation provides a simple but powerful demonstration of the advantage provided by these measurements, advantages which should apply to closed circuit operation of any mill type (including autogenous milling). Investigations into multivariable control of a closed circuit ball mill are currently nearing completion and will be published soon."

"The Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia. It is divided into the Duke Mountain Block on the north east and the Dip Slope on the west. Together, these areas cover 39,503 ha of coal licences.The property is underlain by Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous marine and continental sedimentary rocks. Economic coal measures are contained within the Gates Formation. Exploration of the property began in the early I970s, with drilling commencing in 1975. To date, 255 holes have been drilled and nine adits have been driven to recover unoxidized coal samples.The property has a geological resource potential of 2.8 billion tonnes of medium and high-volatile bituminous coal. Medium-volatile bituminous reserves, totalling 68.9 million ROM tonnes at an over-all strip ratio of 6.3:1, have been identified in three pit areas in the Duke Mountain Block.Construction start-up will commence when sales contracts are arranged. The clean coal will be exported via the Ridley Island Terminal at Prince Rupert.IntroductionThe Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia in the southern port ion of the Peace River Coalfield. The coal field encompasses a strike length of 250 km of Lower Cretaceous coal-bearing strata in which 13 companies have identified several billion tonnes of resources and several hundred million tonnes of reserves. Currently, two companies with contracts are in the construction phase, and are scheduled to produce coal by early 1984. Quintette Coal Ltd. has a contract with Japanese steel mills to supply annually 5.0 million tonnes of metallurgical and 1.5 million tonnes of thermal coal. Teck Corporation (Bullmoose property) has a contract to supply 1.7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually."

"IntroductionIndustrial applications of mica utilize two commercially important varieties of mica: muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite mica is a potassium mica with a general chemical formula, H2KA1(Si04)3 h, and is sometimes referred to as a potas hsilicate. Phlogopite is a magnesium mica having a general chemical formula, H2KMgSi(Si04)3, and is distinguished from the muscovite mica by its decomposition in sulphuric acid.Canada is one of the major natural mica producers in the world. A large tonnage of the mica powders is at present mined and processed in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This Canadian mica is of the phlogopite type. A closely related mineral of the mica family which is widely used in the construction industry is vermiculite. It is a dehydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate characterized by a foliated structure. Expanded vermiculite, which is often referred to as exfoliated mica, is used as many types of thermal and acoustic insulation, as loose fill in buildings, as an aggregate in concrete, as an ingredient in plaster and insulating concrete , and in fire-proofing compositions. Natural phlogopite and muscovite mica powders are used extensively as reinforcing agents in organic polymers. They also have a wide range of applications in commerical products. For example, dry-ground mica powders are used in large tonnage as a surface finish in roofing materials and as a bonding agent in wallboard joint cement. Common products such as paint, rubber, plastics and welding rods contain mica. Recent studies have also shown that mica powders can be added to portland cement in the preparation of concrete products, as they could improve the tensile strength of the concrete products. Is there a relationship among the Sudbury nickel ores, the Cobalt deposits, and the Huronian, Athabascan and North Australian uranium provinces? All are within intracratonic basins, with ore near basal unconformities. There are similarities in the geochemical "fingerprints" pointing to basic igneous rock affiliations. Some show a time relationship to basic igneous activity and to great rift systems. Many basic dykes show radioactivity at their edges. A spatial relationship between the uranium-cobalt-nickel ore at Midwest Lake, Athabasca, and basic igneous rock is reported. These remarks are not meant to imply, necessarily, a direct genetic connection between the basic dykes, etc., and the ore. In some cases, the relationship may be similar to that noted between basic and ultrabasic intrusives and volcanic massive sulphide ore deposits. Crustal thinning in these areas, associated with graben, appears to have favoured volcanic activity, as well as basic intrusives. Probably, the potential of the Huronian should be re thought . Athabascan-type ore may be present . New data on mineralization in Turner Township, Ontario, suggest this. The mineral possibilities of other basins should be reconsidered. It is to be remembered that the Athabascan and Kombolgie basins were neglected for many years. Intracratonic sedimentary-igneous basins contain many of the greatest mineral fields of the world.

"Plastic Filled Valley (PFV) wire rope represents a significant development over the design of conventional wire rope. A sealing thermoplastic is impregnated under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure into a conventional lubricated wire rope to produce a lattice of plastic which surrounds and separates the strands from each other and from the core. Metal-to-metal contact is thereby alleviated and the lubricant is sealed in. The wear resistance, rope breaking load, fatigue resistance and crushing resistance are all increased. The result is a rope which offers exceptional service life.Laboratory tests carried out in Canada and at the University of Stuttgart, in West Germany, confirm the increase in fatigue life. The field trials conducted so far have indicated that the results obtained in the laboratory can be duplicated in the field.IntroductionIn times of double -digit inflation, the consideration given to operating costs throughout industry commands considerable attention. The same can be said of the mining industry. A set of large-diameter wire ropes used on the huge draglines in strip mining can cost in excess of $100,000. Because a machine may use three sets of rope s each year, it is clear that the costs of wire rope can contribute a considerable percentage to any operating budget. As wire rope is a product which is used extensively throughout the mining industry, it would appear timely to turn our attention to any ""Method of Extending Wire Rope Service Life"" in order that wire rope life can be optimized and wire rope costs can be minimized."

La découverte de nouveaux gisements métallifères constitue le point de départ du développement de l'industrie minérale. Or, au cours de ces dernières années, le nombre de ces découvertes a fortement diminué dans les territoires classiquement explorés, entraînant une recrudescence de l?exploration dans les terrains géologiques de grade métamorphique élevé (e.g., Province de Grenville, Grand Nord du Québec). Ces derniers ont été traditionnellement considérés comme stériles à cause (i) de la monotonie apparente des gneiss qui les composent, (ii) de la difficulté d?identifier leurs protolites, (iii) des changements importants dans l?apparence des gîtes recherchés reliés au fort degré de déformation et de métamorphisme et (iv) des théories qui prônent un lessivage important des cations et des métaux d?intérêt économique par les processus de déshydratation des roches lors du métamorphisme régional (Weaver et Tarney, 1985; Vokes, 2000). Cependant, l?avancée des connaissances dans la compréhension des gîtes métallifères et de leurs terrains hôtes gneissiques intensément métamorphisés, montre que les systèmes géochimiques des roches altérées demeurent robustes (p. ex. ; Trägårdh, 1991; Craig et Vokes, 1993; Geringer et al., 1994; Schandl et al., 1995; Zaleski et Peterson, 1995; Vokes, 2000; Blein et al., 2003, sous presse). Bien sûr, les sulfures peuvent être localement remobilisés et même fondre, mais cette remobilisation n?implique pas forcément la disparition du gîte hôte (Williams, 1990) et peut s?avérer, bien au contraire, bénéfique pour la rentabilité d?un gîte en augmentant sa teneur en minerais (Marshall et al., 2000). Jusqu?à présent, dans les terrains métamorphiques, les contextes sédimentaires et plutoniques ont été reconnus et respectivement explorés pour les gîtes de type SEDEX et les gîtes magmatiques de Ni-Cu. L?étude de gîtes de métaux de base et précieux intensément métamorphisés (faciès des granulites) et leur comparaison avec des gîtes équivalents peu on non métamorphisés a permis d?établir, au cours des dernières décennies, des outils pour l?exploration des terrains de haut-grade métamorphique (Vokes, 1991, 2000; Slack et al., 1993; Spry et al., 2000). Ces outils sont basés sur la reconnaissance de roches diagnostiques d?une circulation ou d?une exhalation de fluides hydrothermaux telles que les méta-exhalites (formation de fer, coticules, tourmalinites, roches riches en quartz-gahnite, en apatite, en barite ou en staurolite zincifère) (Spry, 2000; Spry et al., 2000). "Those who submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments.A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including reasonable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects."

A review of induction motors characteristics, adjustable frequency controller fundamentals, and three commonly used controllers is presented. General application guidelines for the three different types of controllers; variable voltage input , current source input and pulse width modulated are then reviewed in detail, and an example of the economic benefit of this technology is discussed. IntroductionSoon after static DC variable speed drives were well established in industry, a need for static AC variable speed drives was seen. The first technical papers describing possible systems appeared in the mid-1960s, with commercially available units arriving in the early 1970s. Without exception, static AC drives are substantially more complex than their DC counterparts, but they have some very desirable properties. As compared to DC motors, AC motors are less costly, physically smaller, more reliable, require less maintenance , easily sealed, have good load regulation, are able to run at higher operating voltages, and have little danger of over-speed runaway . These properties are particularly desirable in explosion-proof, submersible or difficult accessibility applications.Variable speed AC drives are now a proven technology. available in packages from Sub-horsepower to hundreds of horsepower, from 115VAC to 4160 VAC. This paper covers the principles of operation of three common types of controllers, application criteria, motor consideration and finally an example of how an AC variable speed drive can pay for itself in terms of energy savings."

After a description of the computer system and language of implementation, the logic and scope of current model sub-routines are presented. This is followed by a presentation of examples on the current applications of the model to public policy evaluation, including benefit-cost analysis, fiscal analysis and evaluation of the effects of public infrastructure investments made in support of mining projects.IntroductionThis presentation has been developed in response to a number of requests from coal mining companies and various public agencies who have indicated interest in understanding our application of contemporary analytical techniques to public policy in the coal sector. "This paper proposes a biconcave shape bond model for the distinct element method (DEM) to simulate cementation between two circular particles in geomaterials. Rather than an original parallel bond model between particles, the proposed model adopts the more realistic shape of cementation and considers the elastic response of cementation under external loading. The stress field and force-displacement relationship of the biconcave shape bond is based on Dvorkin’s theory, and three modifications are adopted: (1) A superposition method is applied to improve the correctness and symmetry of the stress field, and it also provides a method of addressing the status when both connected particles rotate; (2) To simplify the input parameters, the tangential movement is replaced by the normal deformation and rotation between particles; (3) To accelerate the calculations, variables are extracted in analytical procedures, which provide an efficient method for applying the bond model with only one matrix inversion. With these three modifications, the new biconcave shape bond model is created.To assess the validity of the proposed model, this study compared the elastic deformation in a single bond with an elastic analysis performed using the finite element method (FEM). After verification of the proposed model, a series of sensitivity analyses was performed to explore the effect of bond shape and the differences from the parallel bond model. For a single bond, the results showed that a biconcave model can represent the mechanical behavior of a biconcave shape bond and is effective with different bond shapes. The stress fields calculated by the biconcave model were more similar to the FEM results than those obtained using Dvorkin’s theory. The width and thickness of a bond have a considerable effect on its stiffness, and the variation of thickness decreases with the width of the bond. In addition, the required parameters can be acquired directly from real bond material rather than using the back analysis procedure for parameters.The biconcave model was further implemented in DEM software Particle Flow Code 2 Dimension to certify its applicability in geotechnical engineering. Using this model, a series of uniaxial compression test simulations was performed to analyze the macroelastic responses of specimens. The results showed that the macrotangential elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio had a regular tendency, and they agreed with the stiffness variation in a microbond. This finding can assist in determining correlations between microand macroproperties and provides an innovative method for simulating the behavior of cemented granular material."

"This paper describes the use of terrain and soil information in the planning of mine developments, particularly in satisfying many of the existing provincial regulatory requirements. It is also noted that, if properly used, this will provide a solid data base for cost-efficient and environmentally acceptable land use.IntroductionIn planning the development or expansion of a new or existing mine, engineering alternatives are judged on many factors, one of which is the environmental influence. Ecological investigations, ensuring consideration of a rational approach to managing land use and environmental impacts, should be carried out prior to a final decision being made on mine development. The Pit Slope Manual (CANMET, 1976) suggests that both baseline aquatic and terrestrial data be collected and interpreted in such pre-mining surveys. In British Columbia, planning procedures now exist which incorporate biophysical studies to help identify, assess and manage major environmental impacts associated with mine development.Methods outlined in the Guidelines for Coal Development (E.L.U.C., 1976) have been successfully applied in recent years. Following this example, the Inspection and Engineering Division of the B.C. Mineral Resources Branch prepared guidelines to help expedite the development of new base metal mines (Procedures for Obtaining Approval for Metal Mine Development; Ministry of Energy, Mines and PetroleumResources, 1979).The metal-mine guidelines require the proponent of a new mine development project to prepare a two-stage assessment proposal which systematically moves from a preliminary feasibility study (Stage I) to a final project design (Stage II), including application for regulatory approvals. One purpose of the Stage I report is to provide a description of the existing environmental conditions that could be affected by the proposed development. A preliminary environmental impact assessment should also be reported. The Stage II report will contain detailed assessment and management of environmental impacts."

"The Polaris mining operation (Fig. I) is located on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian Arctic, an area with a very limited shipping season and a hostile climate. The operation consists of the underground works, barge-mounted concentrator facilities, concentrate storage and shipping facilities, a personnel accommodation complex and an airstrip.The electrical energy for the operation is provided by four 2.3 MW diesel-generators installed on the barge. The power is distributed through a 4.16 KV system connected directly to the generators and to the large motors. All other loads are supplied at 600 V or 120 V.The power plant has been designed as a Total Energy System with maximum energy efficiency and thus designed for maximum heat recovery. The waste heat recovered on a year 'round basis is expected to be sufficient for the process heating and drying as well as the space heating for offices and accommodations. The engine cooling system consists of two glycol-water loops, a "" cold"" loop for charge air and lube oil cooling and a ""warm"" loop for jacket water cooling. Each loop is complete with heat exchangers f or heat recovery and out-door forced air radiators to dispose of excess heat. A water loop in the concentrator area transfers the heat from the jacket water loop and the exhaust gas boiler to the space heating equipment, the process and the heating system for the accommodations. Part of the exhaust gas is diverted to the concentrate dryers.IntroductionThe Polaris Mine is a highly mechanized, trackless mine with access through a decline. Drill equipment is electrically powered to minimize fumes and heat. Dry development and production drilling eliminates the need for an underground water supply system.The concentrator, power generators, work shops and auxiliary facilities are located on a barge which is beached in a prepared berth on the shore of Crozier Strait. Oil storage tanks, concentrate storage and accommodation buildings are built on shore. The concentrate storage building ha s a 12-month capacity and is fed from the concentrator by a conveyor system.The accommodation building houses up to 240 people, includes administration office, dining and recreation facilities. The complex is housed in on e interconnected building with public use areas alternating with accommodation units.At full production annual concentrate shipments will amount to about 220,000 wet tonnes. This will be accommodated by about 8 shipments during the regular shipping period-August 15 to October 15. Re-supply of general cargo and fuel will be carried out annually in about 3 shipments within the same period."

"In October of 1980, Fording's 15 000-ton capacity clean coal silo was put into operation. The silo was unique in that it was designed to allow the mass flow of material, coupled with a sophisticated computer-controlled dynamic loadout/weighing system.On May 1, 1982, an explosion, attributed to a methane buildup, devastated the top of the silo. .As a contingent plan to minimize the effect of the production loss the conveyance to the silo top was reconstructed and the silo' was back in operation by mid-June 1982, although the silo top was left open to prevent further methane buildup. As dust emissions occurred during loading ofthe silo, an extensive study was undertaken to establish dust control for the silo, while at the same time providing methane detection and control.The study, conducted for Fording by the Cambrian Engineering Group of Calgary, involved an extensive search and investigation of existing coal silos. The study concluded that there IS no universally accepted method of controlling methane emissions in coal silos.The study also produced a unique conceptual design for handling methane, while at the same time, protecting the environment . Fording's Clean Coal SiloThe silo, located at Fording Coal's Fording River metallurgical coal operation, is utilized for the storage and load out of cleaned thermally-dried metallurgical coal.The silo was constructed in 1979 and 1980 to reduce unit train loadout times and to facilitate the handling of “special shipments"" of coal. The silo went into operation in October 1980, under manual control and utilized computerized, automated loading by February 198I.The silo is 21 m in diameter and 76 m high, with a nominal capacity of IS 000 live tonnes. The coal storage portion of the silo is 21 m in diameter and 48 m high, utilizing 2 steep-angled hopper outlets allowing mass flow of the stored coal during train loading. Each hopper has a control gate and a discharge chute, one chute for bulk loading, the other for trim loading of coal into the rail cars."

"Major swings in the silver price since 1979, along with the ever constant fight to maintain ore reserves has forced United Keno Hill Mines Limited through several unique series of events in order to survive in the 80s.This paper is specifically meant to be a description of safety and productivity improvements achieved to ensure the survival of a silver mining community ill the Yukon. There are, however, other events and conditions that must be described to complete the story and this paper attempts to do that as well IntroductionUnited Keno Hill Mines Limited, a subsidiary of Falconbridge Limited, is the only silver producer in the Yukon. Operations are located in north central Yukon, in and around the small town of Elsa, latitude 62.5 °, about 275 road miles from Whitehorse. The Arctic Circle is about 185 miles due north of the town.Temperatures in 1986 ranged from a high of 28.5°C in July to a low of -37.0°C in November, however, much lower temperatures have been recorded in previous years. Due to the mountainous terrain the town of Elsa is completely in the shade from mid-November until early February, a period of about 12 weeks.The Elsa area, as is most of the north, is considered semiarid with an average precipitation level of about 15 inches. "Dust collectors are used to reduce airborne dust levels generated during crushing at a mining operation and their adequate maintenance is required to ensure effective control of health and safety hazards associated with dusty conditions. Although the pitot traverse technique is commonly employed to balance these dust collectors, the use of an alternative-the equilibrium concentration tracer gas method-is proposed in this paper. This method, which uses sulphur hexafluoride as a tracer gas, can be used to balance airflows in dust collectors and to determine hood collection efficiency accurately and effectively. This technique also reduces some of the errors inherent to pitot tube measurements. The equilibrium concentration tracer gas method, described in this paper, is proposed as a viable alternative as it is faster, more reliable, and amenable to automation. This approach has been used in a variety of mining situations to determine volumetric flow rates in underground openings, leak age through mine stoppings, the effectiveness of face ventilation, pollution migration patterns, mine air recirculation rates, and rock porosity."

"Performance testing of prepartion plants is referred to as plant audit. It evaluates plant performance under normal operating conditions and is aimed at improving yield through knowledge of actual process performance and interactions between different processes in a plant.This paper describes the program to evaluate the performance of several Canadian preparation plants. The performance test requires the planning of a sampling campaign that would include all circuits in the plant. Samples are analyzed to determine washing characteristics (screen and float-sink), ash and per cent solids of feed and products of separation units in the plant. Performance characteristics are established based on analysis and material balance. Specific recommendations can then be made to improve recovery, and identify and explain potential causes of apparent deficiencies.The objectives of the program are to reduce the cost of production by improving recovery of clean coal and, in tum, to reduce disposed tailings, establish baseline information on coal preparation plants performance in Canada, and define R&D work needed to optimize plant operation."
