A general outline is given for the determination of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, cadmium, bismuth, manganese, uranium, molybdenum, vanadium, sulphate and fluoride by polarographic or amperometric methods in a variety of ores or metallurgical products. The detection of oxygen in gas mixtures by an amperometric method used as a safety device is also discussed. Introduction I N this paper, a general outline will be given of the polarographic and amperometric methods used for the chemical analysis of various ores and metallurgical products in the Chemical Analysis Section of the Extraction Metallurgy Division of the Mines Branch. The methods to be discussed will be confined to those based on the use of normal D.C. polarography and will not include those methods which utilize a cathode-ray, square wave, pulse or A.C. type of polarograph. "The Kemess porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit occurs in the Intermontane Belt of north-central British Columbia. The deposit is in andesitic to basaltic flows and tuffs which may be correlated with the Savage Mountain Formation of the Upper Triassic Takla Group. Most known chalcopyrite and molybdenite is associated closely with a 500-m-diameter zone of intense quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration. A zone of supergene enrichment, up to 30 m thick, underlies a leached capping about 20 m thick. The age of mineralization and the surrounding granodiorite and quartz monzonite pluton is Early Jurassic. K-Ar and Rb-Sr analyses indicate that the mineralization and alteration is slightly younger (l82±6 Ma) than the granitic intrusion (KAr: about 205±6 Ma; Rb-Sr: 190±4 Ma). The low 87Sr/J6Sr initial ratio for the granodiorite is typical of plutons in the Intermontane Belt.IntroductionKemess is a medium to small porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit with significant gold and silver values (Pilcher and McDougall, 1976). Closest road access is 35 km southeast of Kemess. Final access must be by float plane or helicopter. The British Columbia Railway right of way passes 70 km to the southwest of theproperty.A prominent gossan zone at Kemess was staked in 1967 by Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. following detection of geochemical anomalies during stream sampling the previous year. During 1968, 1969and 1971, Kennco completed 232 m of X-ray diamond drilling, conducted geological mapping and carried out geochemical sampling of silts and soils (Stevenson, 1969; B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, G.E .M., 1969 and 1971). Getty Mines Ltd. optioned Kemess in 1975and 1976. They remapped the area and diamond drilled 12 BQ and NQ holes, totalling 2065 m (B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, Expl. B.C., 1975)."

Shutdown is a generic term for what may be called an Outage, Turn Around (TAR) or Overhaul etc. Running a plant shutdown well has always been key to the financial contribution of a mine. However, something important has changed. The post pandemic reality is that it is harder to retain workers and many of those near retirement just didn’t come back to work. This is creating a shortage of experienced people and a workforce that changes employers easily. We are seeing the impact of this manifested in the erosion of established maintenance and supply chain processes that now struggle to yield the plant runtime that could once be taken for granted. The scope, cost and duration of a shutdown varies widely depending on the nature of the work and the equipment being renewed. The PM of an electric shovel might require a week of downtime and cost $100,000. A gold plant may need to go down for 3 days when its time to change mill liners and cost $500,000. A turnaround in a refinery can take more than a month and cost multi millions. Despite the huge differences.

If it were necessary to preface a discussion of the mineral position of the Empire by justifying one's interest in that subject, there are two points that at once suggest themselves by way of vindication. Tremendous Growth of MINERAL Consumption The first of these points has to do with the general question of the world's mineral consumption. Most thinking persons appreciate in a more or less vague way the vital rôle that has been, and is being, played by mineral products in building up the material side of our modern civilization. But, apart from that casual and almost subconscious appreciation, very few have any precise knowledge of the extent to which the growth and the operation of our vast present-day industrial structure has been made possible by, and only by, a tremendous increase in the consumption of mineral products of all kinds. The increasing use of minerals confronts us today at almost every turn. It does not matter in what direction we look-at the expansion and the change in transportation facilities, in the air as well as on land and on sea; at the increasing mechanization, not only in factory and mill but even in our domestic life; or at the constantly widening use of machinery for all phases of farm production-everywhere we meet the same phenomena of rapidly growing uses of equipment produced mainly from minerals. Without resorting to any tiresome statistics, a few figures may suffice to indicate with what enormous strides the world's mineral consumption has been advancing. The figures for recent years may be open to objection on the plea that, ever since the outbreak of the world war, conditions have hardly been sufficiently normal to give us trustworthy data-we have been living under extremes either of depression or of abnormal stimulation. During the last decade before the war, however, from 1903 to 1913, the world was moving along in a quietly prosperous manner; and we have figures, or at least reasonably reliable estimates, as to the growth in mineral consumption during that decade.

ALBERTA has been generously endowed with oil, natural gas, coal and water power, thus giving power producers a wide choice in the type of plant and fuel which can be used. Therefore, with such a variety of energy sources to choose from, why was coal selected as the primary fuel at Calgary Power's Wabamun steam plant? This part of the paper will cover the circumstances that led the Company to decide in favour of coal. The second part, to be presented by C. F. Doerr, will describe how the Wabamun coal mine has been developed to supply the large fuel requirements of the power plant. Before considering the Wabamun plant, we require a general under-standing of? the Company's electric system and load. In this paper, the compressive strength and failure patterns of reinforced cemented paste backfill (CPB) were studied aiming to promote the stability of backfilled stopes. The concept of ductile backfill was proposed and a series of unconfined compression tests were carried out on both non-reinforced and reinforced cemented paste specimens. Portland cement (3% to 5% by weight of tailings) and five different types of ductile materials (0 to 0.5% by weight of solids) were employed in this experiment for the specimen preparation. The test results showed that inclusion of ductile materials enhanced the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), reduced the post peak stress loss and transformed the failure behaviour of specimens from classical brittleness to ductility. The strength of CPB reinforced with different proportions of polypropylene fibres was compared. The stress-strain curves illustrated that both cement and fibres contributed to the increase of UCS, but higher strain values at the peak stress were achieved by fibre reinforcement. CT sliced images acquired from X-ray computed tomography (CT-scan) demonstrated that the reinforced specimen developed irregular crevices at the edge of cross sections and gained the capacity of bearing large displacements owing to the mobilised tensile strength of fibres. It leads to the potential of avoiding unexpected falling blocks of CPB when adjacent mining occurs. This finding highlights a strategy to improve the self-supporting capacity of the fill mass with less cement usage and reduce the ore dilution rates when excavating to adjacent stopes.

It is known from earlier and recent research that mechanical properties of intact rock like uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Young's modulus (E) and Poisson's ratio (?) are influenced by shape deviations of test specimens as deviations from the ideal cylinder. That impact can be significant at certain level of inaccuracy of specimen preparing, and it should be objectively evaluated and controlled in testing. The effects of intact specimens side straightness, ends flatness, ends parallelism and perpendicularity to the specimen axis, on UCS, E, and ?, measured in several actual ways during laboratory compression tests, were determined by previous research on 90 homogeneous specimens of limestone. In this paper, we subject these new experimental results to Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to model the mentioned dependence, to identify significant connections of variables and to evaluate the conclusions obtained directly from experimental phase. This study indicates how the responses of the model (outputs) – parameters UCS/E/??of limestone rock depend on factors (inputs) – parameters of specimen shape deviations like flatness R, parallelism P and perpendicularity O, assuming modern test machines with spherically seated upper platen. Starting from general RSM model with three factors (R, P, and O), we investigated the multiple linear regression models of specific mechanical property (UCS, E, and ?). Using the NCSS program ("NCSS 2004 and PASS 2005") in several steps, final models with very high coefficients of determination were developed for properties with the most evident effects of specimen shape deviations: nine models for strength UCS and UCS50 (equivalent UCS for specimen with 50 mm diameter), and three models for ?L (Poisson's ratio calculated from axial deformations measured on the entire specimen length). These statistical models with their response surfaces further strengthen and confirm the results and conclusions from the experimental phase. The critical values of R, P, and O are established using an additional statistical analysis to determine the lower and upper engineering limits. These findings set the basis for the new eligibility criteria for specimens of limestone (and similar rock with UCS about 100-150 MPa) in further testing of strength and deformability.

This paper describes the problems encountered and the steps taken to solve them in milling an ore containing relatively large amounts of pyrrhotite. A complex and greatly lengthened flotation circuit was required to recover the pyrrhotite. A very low pH had to be maintained in the cyanide circuit in order to get good recovery of the gold and maintain reasonable cyanide recovery. Introduction The papers that follow deal with recently completed major improvements in practices at the Sullivan operations in Kimberley. The papers have been prepared by members of the Consolidated Engineering Staff and outline the construction programme which has been in progress for the past three years, entailing an expenditure of some millions of dollars. Four major operational changes have been brought about in the mine and concentrator. They are: (1) A change in backfill procedure for filling stopes below the 3900 level. (2) A 12,000-ton,per-day sink-float plant at the concentrator. (3) A new haulage system from the mine to the concentrator. (4) A completely new crushing plant and ore storage facilities located underground. A brief outline of the background and history leading up to this overall project will be given to show how each started as an independent betterment and how they were finally co-ordinated into one major programme. The first of these, namely, the necessity for backfilling stopes below the 3900 level, was the most pressing problem. All filling to date bad been done above the 3900 level, where mining was carried on in an irregular pattern of open stoping. Stopes below the 3900 level were first opened in 1940 and are being worked on a regular pattern of panel sub-level open diamond drill stopes. The two areas are separated by a sill pillar traversing the entire length of the vein at the 3900 level elevation.

In this paper, the differential equations governing the mass transport and the electrochemical reaction in a cathode catalyst layer of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are solved based on the polynomial series expansion method. Explicit expressions for the polarization curve as well as for the distributions of oxygen, current density and overpotential are obtained when a quadratic, cubic or quartic polynomial is employed to approximate the oxygen concentration distribution. These kinds of explicit solutions are desirable for MEA design and diagnosis purposes. The comparison between the conventional numerical approach and the explicit solution approach proposed here shows that satisfactory accuracy can be reached by the first four terms of the polynomial series. The effect of the catalyst layer thickness on the accuracy of the obtained explicit polynomial solutions is also discussed.

During this, the Centennial year of the discovery of the Hall-Heroult process, it seems appropriate to review some of the developments which have taken place in Canada and to explain why it has become an important world centre for the production of primary aluminum. For many years after it was recognized that the element aluminum existed, scientists were frustrated in their efforts to isolate it. In the early 1800s H. C. Oersted and Frederick Woehler prepared small quantities sufficient to measure some of the physical properties. A quasi-commercial process involving reduction with metallic sodium was developed by the French scientist H. St. Claire Deville in 1855 but the cost was very high ($30. 00 per kg). It was not until 1886 that Charles Martin Hall in the United States and P.L.T. Heroult in France, more or less simultaneously but completely independently, discovered the process which is essentially that in use today. Some of the early pioneers in the industry quickly recognized the potential of the hydro-electric resources in Canada as economic energy suppliers for aluminum production. The first commercial production in Canada was in Shawinigan, Quebec in 1901, only 15 years after the process was discovered. Subsequently operating plants were established at nine different locations in Canada (Quebec and British Columbia) (Table 1). Operations continue today in all locations except one (La Tuque). The table shows present plant capacity which for the older plants was reached in an evolutionary manner including replacement of obsolete capacity or upgrading and modernization of existing designs.

The McArthur River deposit is a structurally-controlled unconformity-related uranium deposit. The mineralization is situated at the intersection of a pronounced fault zone, referred to as the P2 fault zone, and the unconformity between Paleoproterozoic Wollaston Group metasedimentary rock and Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic Athabasca Group. Mineralization is variably hosted within the Athabasca Group fault wedge and the faulted basement, consisting of twelve zones covering a strike length of 2,700 m. The main P2 fault zone consists of several reactivated foliation-parallel faults containing narrow seams of graphitic clay gouge that are separated by highly cleaved, graphitic wall rock. The mine grid east-dipping P2 fault zone is characterized by reverse offset of the unconformity surface. It varies from a single discrete fault to splay offsets consisting of two to three individual splays. The combined vertical offset along the P2 fault zone is a maximum of about 80 m. The fault has emplaced a wedge-shaped sequence of Wollaston Group metasedimentary rocks into the Athabasca Group. Foliation-oblique faults occur throughout the McArthur deposit trend. Steep east-northeast trending faults generally exhibit apparent oblique dextral sense of shear. Less common, and possibly conjugate, are steep faults trending east-southeast with an apparent sinistral sense of shear. Offsets are generally less than 10 m on these structures. South-trending and shallow west-dipping brittle faults with offsets less than 1 m are also observed while rare steep, north-trending faults are also noted locally and played a critical role in development of the Zone 2 basement-hosted mineralization.

"The planning and design of mining panels in the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc., Lanigan Division mine Block B involved a number of investigative techniques. The techniques utilized to gain insight into the viability of mining included2-D and 3-D seismic surveys, longhole drilling, exploration wells, photo lineament, magnetic and gravity surveys, and actual room excavation.IntroductionPotash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS) owns and operates four potash mines in the province of Saskatchewan. The Lanigan Division mine is located 110 Ian east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, near the town of Lanigan.The Lanigan Mine commenced production in August 1968under the ownership or Alwinsal Potash of Canada Limited. The mine was purchased by PCS in 1977.Lanigan Division's productive capacity is 3.4 million tonnes of product per year. Ore is extracted from the "" B"" zone or Layer III or the Patience Lake member of the Prairie Evaporite, more than 1000m below surface . The Patience Lake member (approximately 20 m thick) consists of potash interbedded with salt. The average run-of-mine ore grade is 21070 K20 (Fig. I).The mine was initially developed using the room-and-pillar technique. Improvements in mining resulted in the use or extensible conveyors in long panel rooms."

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been gaining a significant edge in the construction industry over the last decade. BIM allows gathering all building information in one shared database that can help all construction entities better understand, integrate and visualize all work progress from inception to operation of the building. The main purpose behind BIM is to bring all project participants together (Client, Architect, Contractor, Consultant) since the initial stages of a project allowing them to cooperate and work as a team in the promise of an increased productivity, reduced cost, enhanced quality and faster delivery. However, a full-fledged implementation of BIM tools and benefits is not yet achieved in the construction industry and remains a debatable issue for researchers and practitioners in the construction field. This paper aims at assessing BIM awareness and usage in the Lebanese construction industry through conducting interviews with contractors, architects and consultants that are key players in the Lebanese market. A comprehensive literature review about BIM adoption in some developed countries and in the surrounding region is also provided in order to better evaluate the Lebanese industry status in comparison with foreign industries. This research sheds the light on BIM awareness of the different construction parties in the Lebanese market, assesses the extent of its current use, identifies the pertaining implementation challenges, and provides recommendations to enhance BIM role in the Lebanese construction industry.

This paper gives an estimation of the future requirements of the western world in relation to energy re-sources. It then goes on to outline the role that atomic power -with its basic raw material, uranium -will play in supplying these energy requirements. Canada's position in this picture is covered, and some interesting forecasts are made. Introduction I T is possible that the following remarks will appear to have more to do with power than uranium. However, to fully comprehend what is in store for the Canadian uranium mining industry, we must be able to estimate the potential requirement, and, to do this satisfactorily, a thorough understanding of the circumstances that will give rise to that demand is necessary. The growing need for electrical energy will play by far the major role, as large tonnages of uranium will be required for its generation. The nuclear weapon has, up to the present, comprised the major market for uranium.

"The mining and metallurgy industry is highly energy intensive and one of the largest energy users in Canada. Energy costs are also a major component of total production costs in this industry as described in the 1990 Report of The Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC). For some plants, energy costs are reported to be up to 30% of total production costs. Therefore, a reduction in energy costs provides an opportunity to improve industry profitability. The specific energy intensity and production costs can be reduced by using modem energy efficient natural gas technologies. In addition, these technologies often improve product quality and increase productivity. Natural gas not only offers economic benefits, but is also environmentally benign as compared to other major energy sources. Emissions of NO"", CO2 particulates and SO2 are lower with natural gas than other fossil fuels.This paper provides a brief overview of some state-of-the-art gas technologies for the mining and metallurgy industry including cogeneration, oxy-air-fuel burners, ceramic immersion tube heaters, direct gas contact process, low NOx burners, and energy efficient liquid heating systems.CogenerationCogeneration is defined as the simultaneous production of electricity or mechanical power and useful process heat from a single fuel source. One of the primary considerations in selecting a cogeneration system is the relative quantities of electrical and thermal energy which are to be produced. Two types of systems are discussed below."

Great advances have been made in rubber-lined pumps for the pumping of mill pulps. The Canadian Allis Chalmers alone report ov.er 300 such pumps put into service during the past four years. Pumps in which both the casing and the impeller are rubber covered have proved most economical in handling the usual run of mill pulps, effecting large savings in power, maintenance, and shutdown costs. For the handling of pulps containing comparatively large, sharper edged /articles, rubber-lined casings with hard iron impellers have been developed by the pumping departments of Hollinger and Noranda. These rubber-iron combination pumps show an appreciable reduction in overall pumping costs as compared with the all-rubber and the all-iron pumps. The power efficiency is lower in rubber-iron than in all-rubber pumps but higher than in the all-iron pumps, with lower replacement costs due to the cheap iron impellers used. Where continuous operation is essential, however, and duplication of units to take care of shutdown time for replacement of parts is not within the expenditure budget of the company, all-rubber pumps are being used t0 a greater extent. As in all items pertaining to milling operations, the economics of the situation must be studied as closely as the technical details, to arrive at the most advisable practice.

"Horizontal wells in coal seams, Qinshui basin, China are prone to wellbore instability problems induced by drilling, completion and production operations due to the presence of natural cleat network, anisotropy with regard to permeability, brittleness and mechanically weak property of the coal rock. The mechanism of wellbore instability in coal seams is very different from that in conventional formations, the traditional wellbore stability study methods therefore, are not proper for wellbore stability analysis in coal.In this study, the mechanism and controlling of wellbore stability of coal seams in the Qinshui basin was investigated through theoretical modeling, laboratory experiment and field operation. Firstly, a new physical model of wellbore stability for highly-cleated coalbed was proposed, considering the combined effect of mechanical mechanism and reservoir characteristics, specifically, taking the effect of reservoir pore pressure in the vicinity of the wellbore on the wellbore stability into account. Then experiments on the triaxial stress evaluation were conducted at laboratory where rock mechanical parameters such as Poisson's ratio, Young's modulus, compressive strength, tensile strength, angle of internal friction and cohesion ability were measured respectively. The in situ stress at different depths in four wells of Zheng 1-303, Zheng 1-308, Zheng 1-309, and Zheng 1-310 in the Zhengzhuang were calculated, and the collapse pressure and formation breakdown pressure were predicted through the theoretical model we developed. Finally, by comparing the maximum collapse pressure and minimum breakdown pressure of the four wells in the coal as well as in the roof and floor of the coal seams, the fluid weight window for safe drilling in each coal seams was determined, and appropriate approaches against anti-sloughing in coal seams, Qinshui basin were applied in the field operation.The wellbore stability was found not only related to the wellbore pressure, but also affected by the pressure in the reservoir through the theoretical model. The fluid weight window for safe drilling in each coal seams varies with the coefficient of wellbore stability in the model. The laboratory experiment results indicate that the roof and floor of 3 # coal in Qinshui basin has high breaking strength, high heterogeneity, and are easy to collapse and breakdown. In addition, the whole rock mineral analysis shows that 3 # coal in the Duanshi block has high clay content, resulting in the phenomenon of hydration swelling as clay encountered water, and leading to unstable coal and extreme large drilling uncertainties. Due to the effect of the unstable rock mechanical properties of the roof and floor formation on the wellbore stabilizing, drilling parameters, drilling fluid performance and BHA were optimized during the drilling process according to the formation properties, rock mechanical properties and drilling techniques in the field operation."

Various types of service robots have recently been developed for guarding facilities, caring for the elderly, carrying objects, and cleaning buildings. As barrier-free facilities improve and their use expands, these robots have more space within which to move inside buildings. Yet robots that move autonomously rely on position-detection systems. Though improving rapidly, these systems are far from perfect in determining positions in certain situations, especially when robots navigate large areas or cross various locations. Our group is working to solve this problem by developing a position-detection system using random-dot patterns on a floor. First, we construct a floor with a random-dot pattern and register the positions of all of the dots into a database. As the robot moves across the floor, a camera on the robot captures an image of the floor beneath it and crops the dot pattern in the image. The cropped dot pattern is matched to the dot patterns in the database to determine the position of the robot and the direction in which the robot is facing or moving. In this paper we propose a self-localization system and matching algorithms derived from a space technology and present the results of several experiments.

Gypsum in Manitoba is quarried from the Jurassic Amaranth Formation a1 Gypsumville and Harcus; it has been mined near Amaranth and Silver Plains. At Gypsumville, gypsum is carbonate- free but has thin clay laminae between gypsum layers; the rock is folded in places, and some anhydrite is present. At Harcus, gypsum contains scattered dolomite, both as patches in a penemosaic pattern and as thin layers; small chalcedonic concretions also can be found. The quarry at Harcus was opened late in 1978 and currently produces about 100,000 tonnes annually. The two inactive mines near Amaranth operated from 1932 lo 1963 and from 1967 to 1970, and contain a central anhydrite layer. The mine near Silver Plains was flooded from an underlying artesian aquifer in 1975 and has not been reopened. Manitoba gypsum is used in cemem plants in Mani1oba and Saskatchewan and in wallboard plants in the three Prairie Provinces.
