Kumtor Gold Company (KGC) currently operates the 500,000 tonnes per day Kumtor open pit gold mine located in the Issyk-Kul region of the Kyrgyz Republic at an elevation of more than 4,000 m. To supplement the open-pit mill feed with high grade underground ore from outside the current pit limits, KGC started pre-production design and development of the underground mine for the SB ore zone in late 2006. The initial phase of pre-production development consists of exploration and haulage declines which, upon completion, will provide ventilation and access to the underground mine. Design and construction of these declines presented many challenges to the project team considering the mines unique location at high altitude, the limited experience with Western underground mining techniques in the Kyrgyz Republic, and the impact of the nearby Davydov glacier and resultant ground conditions. Completion of the exploration and haulage declines was undertaken jointly by KGC and mine contractor, J.S. Redpath Limited (Redpath). The initial phase of development including several ground falls provided detailed information on geotechnical ground types and conditions that were useful in determining the overall mine design and methodology for production. This paper covers the various aspects of the design and construction process of developing the declines under the glacier, minimizing the likelihood of further ground falls, and the journey of both KGC and Redpath which led to the successful breakthrough between the declines on 01 July 2012.

"Temporal and other factors contributing to the occurrence of occupational accidents at an underground coal mine in Turkey between 1992 and 2000 have been analyzed. The time period of the study spanned the transition from hand-worked mining methods (1992 to 1996) to hand-worked mining methods and mechanized mining methods (1997 to 2000).The mine selected for the study employed an average of 5,835 men per year on three separate eight-hour production shifts for 302 d/y (Sundays are not worked, and there are 11 holiday days per year). Production on an annual basis averaged 190,000 tons per year between 1992 and 1996, and 300,000 tons per year between 1997 and 2000.The purpose of the study was to determine which, if any, of the factors studied contributed to the occurrence of accidents so that the mine could take the necessary steps to reduce the risk to the workforce. Regression analysis was used to determine the strength of the relationship between each factor studied and the number of occupational accidents.The strongest relationships observed were between the age of the employee, the day of the week, and the total yearly labour."

Based on analysis of the evolutionary history of the valley in Baihetan, the mechanism of asymmetrical evolution, gradual migration-incision evolved from left bank to the right, is revealed in Baihetan river valleys. The process of in-situ stress evolution is carried out by using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). Consequently, the numerical results which indicate the main regulations of that stress field are as follow: (1) The phenomenon termed "high in-situ stress fold" appears in the bottom of the valley. With the maximum principal stress being 28-34 MPa, the stress increases significantly at a vertical depth of approximately 130 m. (2) The in-situ stress presents zonal distribution along the bank slope. It is apparent that the in-situ stress field consists of stress relaxation zone (SRZ), stress concentration zone (SCZ) and original stress zone (OSZ). The horizontal depth of stress relaxation zone varies from the left bank (roughly 200 m) to the right (about 120 m). Furthermore, the stress evolution of the left bank slope is studied. As a result, it is found that asymmetrical erosion contributes to the difference of the in-situ stress distribution as a critical factor, between the left bank and the right. And for an asymmetrical valley, the evolutionary process of in-situ stress field is a circular procedure, which includes the incision of valley, the accumulation of landslides and the migration of valley.

THE first application of the cementation process took place in the year 1864, according to H. Standish Ball, when a break in the brickwork lining at a depth of 270', in one of the Rhine Preussen pits near Homburg, was sealed by running in milk of cement from the surface by means of a small hand pump. At about the same time Monsieur Portier adopted the method in France for repairing breaks in shaft lining. Figure 1 is descriptive of the Portier system and is of interest when compared with modern practice. During the next thirty years numerous attempts were made to improve the process; the general method used in sinking being to put clown bore holes outside the perimeter of the shaft for the purposes of injection. The cementation process was first recognized as an important as-set to mining in 1896 when Monsieur A. Francois developed his method of boring and injecting inside the shaft below the permanent water level. Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

"Washington State's diverse geological setting is reflected by its several types of porphyry Cu-Mo deposits. All are associated with calc-alkaline intrusions, and they range in age from Jurassic to Miocene.The largest is the Mount Tolman Mo-Cu deposit located in the Omineca Belt. It contains 2.18 billion tonnes of material averaging 0.093% MoS2 and 0.09% Cu. There are intermediate-size Mesozoic deposits in the Intermontane Belt. The Cascade volcanic arc hosts small- to medium-Tertiary deposits. Among these, of particular interest is the Sunrise breccia pipe, which has been explored over a vertical distance of 1000 m. It contains reserves of 64.6 million tonnes averaging 0.319% Cu and 0.071% MoS2 with significant tungsten values. The Glacier Peak deposits have potential resources of 1.7 billion tonnes averaging 0.334% Cu and more than 0.015% MoS2 and also contain tungsten. The Margaret deposit can be classified as a porphyry Cu-Au type; it has reserves of 200 million tonnes averaging 0.434% Cu, 0.0175% MoS2> 0.27 g!t Au and 1.92 g!t Ag. Drill intercepts of the North Fork deposit also show significant gold values.Mineralization and hydrothermal alteration of these deposits are typical of porphyry deposits, although some differences can be noted. The Mount Tolman molybdenum deposit contains topaz alteration zones and is transitional between a plutonic type and a Climax-type molybdenum system. Other deposits, such as the Kelsey, Mazama, North Fork, and Margaret, are low-sulphide systems that contain significant amounts of magnetite."

Magnesium and its alloys are attractive for use in automotive and aerospace applications because of their low density and good mechanical properties. However, difficulty in forming magnesium and the limited number of available commercial alloys limit their use. The present work reviews the efforts to improve the attractiveness of magnesium through non-traditional processing, and presents results of current work on producing magnesium alloys via powder metallurgy (P/M). P/M can be used to alleviate the formability problem through near-net-shape processing, and also allows unique chemical compositions that can lead to new alloys with novel properties. The surface layer formed on the Mg powders during processing acts as a barrier to diffusion and sintering is problematic. The layer contains oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of magnesium, formed by reactions with the atmosphere. There are several means to possibly overcome this barrier. Alloying additions have been identified that may promote surface layer disruption during sintering. Processing variables such as sintering atmosphere may reduce the layer or allow the formation of less detrimental compounds. Post-sintering processes such as hot working may disrupt the layer and improve density. The experimental effect of all these processing parameters is presented in this paper.

"A 2D finite element modelling (FEM), based on pure Lagrangian approach, is developed for studying the serrated chip formation during high speed machining (HSM) of 7075-T651 alloy. The solution was achieved using a commercial software package, ABAQUS/Explicit v6.13. The Johnson-Cooke (JC) constitutive equation is used to describe the work material behaviour. Moreover, the JC damage equation is implemented into the FEM to take into account for the shear localization during the serrated chip formation. Modified Coulomb friction model has been used to characterize the sliding/sticking effects on the tool-chip interface with the friction coefficient and shear flow stress determined by force calibration and machining data, respectively. The proposed FEM is validated using experimental data obtained in HSM of 7075-T651. The FEM was able to predict accurately serrated chip morphology. The intensity of chip segmentation was found to increase with cutting speed.INTRODUCTIONHigh speed machining (HSM) is one of the most used processes for manufacturing aircraft parts with aluminum alloys. For aluminum alloys, the use of HSM increases metal removal rate and reduces the formation of built up edges and burrs. However, it was found that serrated (also named segmented or sawtooth chip) and discontinuous chips can be produced during HSM of some high strength aluminum alloys, such as 7075-T6 alloy (Rao & Shin, 2001). Many parameters were found to affect the segmented/discontinuous chip formation during the machining of aluminum alloys.There are two cases in which the serrated chip can forms: the first is when machining hardened materials (Morehead, Huang, & Luo, 2007), and the second, when machining ductile materials with a cutting speed higher than a critical value (Barry & Byrne, 2002). Different theories and models were developed in order to explain the formation mechanism of such kind of chips. According to Astakhov (2006), the segmented chip formation is attributed to variations in stress and plastic deformation states, and resulting temperatures on the cutting zone. Liyao et al. (2013) stated that the segmented chip formation was mainly attributable to adiabatic shear instability/catastrophic strain localization. Others (Vyas & Shaw, 1999) suggest that the fracture/crack propagation mechanism is at the root of chip generation."

Cylindrical samples of pure titanium were subjected to uniaxial compression at room temperature, leading to the formation of three generations of twins. Many primary contraction twins were observed as the initial texture was favourable for their formation. Numerous secondary extension twins formed within the primary contraction twins and some tertiary contraction twins within the secondary extension twins. The orientations of these three generations of twins were determined by electron backscatter diffraction techniques and their associated Schmid factors (SFs) were calculated. The formation of the twin variants selected in each generation and the absence of certain potential variants are accounted for by rotating the twinning displacement gradient tensor expressed in the twin system reference frame into the crystallographic reference frame of the relevant neighbouring grain. The presence of the observed primary, secondary and tertiary twins is explained in terms of the ease of imposing the required accommodation strains on the neighbouring grains. By contrast, certain first, second and third generation potential high SF twins were absent because their formation would have required accommodation by the most difficult deformation mode: pyramidal glide.

"A series of new, grease-based, solvent free open gear lubricants were developed to meet the demanding service requirements of mining equipment. The use of these products has resulted in better performance under conditions of temperature extremes and in terms of longer component lives. They have gained widespread acceptance within the mining communities for such applications as the lubrication of mining shovels, draglines and ball mills.These products are WHMIS non-controlled and are environmentally acceptable. THE Buchans ore bodies are located in central Newfoundland, three miles north of Red Indian lake. The townsite of Buchans was named after a Royal Navy Captain who, while attempting to make contact with the Beothuck Indians, camped in the area in 1820. Ore was first found at Buchans by a Mic Mac Indian, Matty Mitchell, who discovered one of the three small orebodies in the bed of the Buchans river. The Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company, which holds mineral rights in the area, developed the orebody, but was forced to give up the venture because of difficulties encountered in separating the various sulphides. The American Smelting and Re-fining Company developed a flotation process which was capable of economically separating and concentrating the various sulphides, and, in 1926, they took a long-term lease on the property.

During the last decade Antofagasta Minerals? Los Pelambres Mine has dramatically increased its ore throughput following the fast initial phase ramp up through a series of planned incremental expansions. The original 85,000 mtpd, two SAG line plant was commissioned in 1999 and rapidly exceeded nameplate tonnage in only a few months. Following this, the inclusion of a pebble crushing circuit resulted in throughputs in excess of 114,000 mtpd and a recent, final third line SAG and ball mill addition have taken the plant to over 175,000 mtpd even with increasing ore hardness and changing ore feed characteristics. The progressive changes are described in this paper together with how the technical challenges have been met.

Casting imperfections, such as porosity, in cast aluminum components greatly influence their fatigue properties. The effect of porosity on the fatigue life of 319-F and A356-T6 aluminum alloys was studied, where the porosity characteristics on the fracture surfaces of fatigue-tested samples were examined using SEM and image analysis. The results show that porosity has the most detrimental effect on the fatigue life: 92 % of all tested samples fractured due to porosity acting as the main crack initiation site. In the absence of casting imperfections, other microstructural aspects such as slip bands can be responsible ( 4 % ). The porosity was investigated in terms of the pore size at the sample fracture surface and its location i.e. near the edge or close to the interior. It was found that porosity located far from the sample surface (edge) has less influence on the fatigue crack initiation, and the fatigue life decreases as the size of the pore located at the sample surface increases. "A practical picture of the effects of stress and of the structural environment in an extraction area in a bedded deposit is described, and the main factors of ground control where principles of rock mechanics can be applied are discussed. Reference is made to early work in Europe, where systematic rock mechanics studies started in coal mines, as well as to the early work in the Canadian coal mines.During the past two decades, considerable theoretical and experimental knowledge, pursued both in the laboratory and in the field, has accumulated throughout the world, but the state of the science still does not permit application of substantiated theory such as is found in the design of above-ground structures, largely because of the complexity of the rocks. The mining engineer, as oppm1ed to the civil engineer, is constantly faced by exposures of new ground that is often subject to unpredictable discontinuities. However, the rationale already developed by rock mechanics principles and experimentation provides concepts and information that may be useful in selecting mining layouts. These concepts and existing measuring techniques can also assist ground control as mining progresses.Many of the bedded deposits, much as coals and evaporites, have pronounced deformation properties, and there are limitations in making stress measurements within short distances of mine openings or extraction areas. On the other hand, the measurement of movement of the hanging wall (roof) and footwall (floor) of roadways and extraction faces, as well as the sides of pillars, provides a most useful tool in assessing ground stability.This paper is to be regarded as a brief progress report with particular reference to Canadian applications of rock mechanics to bedded deposits."

In a recent paper [1], the present authors discussed calculated energy consumption numbers in copper sulphide concentrate smelting for four different smelting technologies. For the present study, from among these technologies, they selected the Noranda/Teniente continuous bath smelting followed by Peirce Smith (PS) converting route to investigate the impact on total energy requirement of some key process variations, such as tuyere injection of dry concentrate vs. slingering of wet concentrate over the molten bath, continuous converting vs. conventional batch PS converting and commercially proven slag cleaning alternatives. In their calculations, the authors used the same thermochemical model and methodology used in their earlier paper. This approach to explore plant design options provides an interesting basis for evaluating flowsheet modifications that could lead to significant copper smelting energy savings. The METSIM software was used in the present paper to carry out heat and mass balance computations for 8 different flowsheet configurations. The results are presented and discussed in the paper with respect to copper recoveries, energy requirements and CO2 emissions.

Load-haul-dump vehicles (LHDs) are extensively used in underground mining, however, equipment design and operating conditions contribute to restricted operator sight lines. The inability to clearly see people, objects, or hazards around the machine has contributed to a number of accidents including fatal injuries. In order to identify vehicle design characteristics resulting in restricted and blocked sightlines, line-of-sight assessments are traditionally completed in the field. However, field methods are unable to evaluate lineof- sight under dynamic operating conditions, and are limited in their ability to provide feedback on the impact of various operator characteristics such as sitting height. Results of this research show computer simulation and virtual reality can be successfully used to evaluate line-of-sight during the operation of LHD vehicles. In order to benefit from virtual reality applications, the work environment, LHD vehicle, and human posture need to be represented as accurately as possible. A computer simulation program with ergonomic analysis features, Classic JACK 3.1, was successfully used. Threedimensional CAD models of LHDs were developed from manufacturer specifications and pictures taken from LHDs currently in use. The LHD models were imported into the JACK environment, a digital human was positioned in the cab of the LHD vehicle, and the vehicle and human were driven over a typical mine route. Real-time feedback in the JACK program was used to identify what the operator could see under different operating conditions. Machine characteristics and operating scenarios resulting in impaired line-of-sight were successfully identified with this method. The JACK program could also provide real-time feedback on the human’s joint forces and torques, strength requirements, postural comfort, and metabolic energy expenditure. As a result, this method could be used to successfully evaluate musculoskeletal injury risk factors along with system design recommendations to improve workplace safety and productivity in any setting. The LHDs evaluated in the JACK software package can also be combined with mine models and imported into other VR software packages (e.g. Blender) in order to enable viewing in Laurentian University’s Virtual Reality Laboratory. The VR models using these packages can be viewed in stereo to provide better appreciation of spatial vision issues.
