Commercial deployment of Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) requires field testing of a scale that can stress the geologic reservoirs. One such reservoir of interest consists of unminable coal seams that exhibit favorable characteristics and depositional environments and lower pressure and temperature than other, deeper, reservoirs. Such conditions can reduce compression costs while utilizing the action of adsorption that offers a more effective carbon dioxide (CO2) bonding than free storage or solution. To ensure the success of such tests, a number of parameters should be accurately determined, such as the seam geometry and stratigraphy, coal porosity and permeability parameters as well as optimum injection conditions. In essence the CO2 injection model should be calibrated for the reservoir characteristics using all available data. History matching calibrations are based on gas and water production from existing wells prior to injection. This paper will present reservoir models that were developed for a pilot--scale 907 tonnes (1000 tons) CO2 injection test that was performed in 2009 through one legacy coalbed methane production well in Russell County, Virginia, USA. The model incorporates a number of individual coal seams about 0.3 m (1ft) in thickness located at depths ranging from 300 to 700 m (1,000 to 2,200 feet). Model calibration was performed through history matching to prior production data, and subsequently the model was utilized to develop different injection scenarios. The developed model was used after injection to calculate CO2 plume distribution patterns that were monitored at the injection test. The paper will present model data and assumptions with a special emphasis on the effect of hydraulic fractures and the skin factor to the coalbed methane (CBM) production model.

"Abstract - Wawa has long been a center of mineral exploration activity and diamonds have been reported in the area since the 1930s. However, diamond exploration did not begin in the area in earnest until 1991. In 1993, Sandor Surmacz and Marcelle Hauseux of Saminex began a prospecting program in the area which culminated in their discovery of the "Sandor" diamond occurrence in an outcrop on the east side of the Trans-Canada Highway. They subsequently optioned the property to Spider Resources Inc. who obtained the necessary exploration permits from Algoma Central Corporation and undertook an exploration program. The diamonds at the "Sandor" diamond occurrence are hosted in the matrix of a spessartite dike composed of actinolite, biotite, and albite. Of the 64 similar dikes that have been sampled and analyzed to date, eight have been found to contain a total of 231 diamonds. Most of the diamonds are of high quality, although they are small.The dikes are non-magnetic and do not have any other geophysical characteristic that can be used to differentiate them from the adjacent country rock. All of the dikes discovered to date have been found by prospecting or by geological mapping by the Ontario Geological Survey. The dikes do not contain pyrope garnet or chrome diopside, two of the commonly used kimberlite indicator minerals. Instead, low Mg, high Cr, Zn-rich chromite, and ilmenites of variable composition, some of which lie within the field of kimberlitic Mg-ilmenite compositions, characterize the diamondiferous dikes. A regional-scale till sampling program for heavy minerals, and geochemical analysis of the <0.177 mm fraction, was used to further define the areas of occurrence of the spessartite dikes and to indicate additional areas for diamond prospecting. Heavy minerals in till that were most useful include: actinolite, chromite, and ilmenite. Geochemical analyses of the dikes show them to contain elevated concentrations of Ni and Cr and to be enriched in Ba, Co, V, Ca, Fe, and Mg relative to the surrounding rocks. Elevated concentrations of Ni and Cr in till occur overlying and down-ice of known lamprophyre dikes."

"This paper is intended to show that grinding media can effect flotation results, and in some instances the results are vastly different. I do not suggest that autogenous grinding is beneficial in the separation of all complex base metal ores, in fact I know of a case where autogenous grinding would be disastrous to any selective flotation. I do however contend that prospective flow sheets and reagent balances of any complex base metal ores should be tried with both types of grinding. I feel fortunate that the paper to be presented later in this meeting by Rene Klymouski will, I think, compliment and perhaps explain some of the results of my research.This paper will be in four parts. The first part deals with a literature survey on the subject. Surprisingly enough, very little information has been printed on the subject. The second part deals with results obtained in bench scale tests on an ore from Chester Mines Limited. It was in these tests that we realized that steel grinding was giving us serious problems. So bench scale tests are shown giving results with a stainless steel grind, a mild steel grind and a grind in a ceramic mill with ceramic billets.The third part of the paper deals with results obtained in the Mines Branch Pilot Plant, when again we ground the ore with three different types of grinding media. Incidentally, this has been the only pilot plant test made at the Mines Branch in which flotation products were made on both steel grinding and autogenous grinding on the same ore. The fourth part deals with two other New Brunswick ores and is intended to show that changing the grinding media effects ores other than that of Chester Mines Limited."

In some parts of the world explosions in mines are more commonplace events. Even in the more developed nations explosions have occurred in recent times. In some cases these mines have significantly lowered their lost time injury frequency rates and as such considered themselves to be ?safe? operations. The consequence of these explosions has been devastating. It is not just the loss of those underground, but also to the families that have lost people in them and the broader community that has lost friends, income, business opportunities, and in many cases support and sponsorships. It begs so many questions, ?What went wrong??; ?Why were the circumstances not foreseen??; ?What could have been done to prevent it??; ?How is it that no one stopped it, reported it, fixed it etc.??. Being held accountable for negligence, should not be overlooked, however this may not aid the processes required to find all the answers. If the nature of explosions is understood, the circumstances and tools to prevent them are readily available then the occurrence and reoccurrence are due to weaknesses or inadequacies of the systems of work or in the implementation of them. This paper restates the fundamentals of gas explosions, examines the options to control the underground environment through ventilation, gas management and monitoring, education and training. Case studies have been used to examine systematic failures in ventilation management. In some of these cases it is not so much, the system that had been developed, but the interpretation and implementation of the system that resulted in the failure and subsequent loss.

"Upon successful completion of the AG/SAG Mill project (Cooper et al., 2001) the Brunswick Mine concentrator was configured with single line processing through the AG/SAG mill, followed by two parallel ball mill and flotation circuits. The Stage Grinding project was undertaken to utilize a pre-flotation stage on the AG/SAG mill primary cyclone overflow and simplify the flowsheet by consolidating the two ball mill and flotation circuits, resulting in single line processing fi-om AG/SAG mill to final concentrate. Concurrently, the reclaim water supply capacity was increased to enable flotation cleaning at lower percent solids.Benefits from the Stage Grinding project include revenue enhancement from increased zinc grade and recovery combined with additional lead recovery. Further benefits included a reduction in the number of process pumps, reduction in loss associated with spillage to sumps and process simplification through efficient use of equipment layout.The Stage Grinding project was implemented in six phases over a period of seven months in 2000. Each phase was commissioned during scheduled concentrator shopdays with minimal additional downtime required. One year after project approval the Stage Grinding project was completed at a total cost of $1 1.8 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is one of the world’s largest leadzinc mines. Milling of ore began in 1964 from the No. 12 orebody, with an expansion in 1966 to accommodate ore fkom the No. 6 open pit located several kilometers away. In 1980 the pit was exhausted and the concentrator rationalized to accept a design feed rate of 10,500 tomes per day from the No. 12 mine. In excess of 100 million tomes have been milled to date, representing over three-quarters of the known reserve. The concentrator employs differential froth flotation to produce lead, zinc, copper and leauzinc bulk concentrates. The ore is massive sulphide, with approximately 20% valuable minerals, 60% pyrite and 20% silicates."

"The Key Lake uranium mine is the largest single uranium producer in the world. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco Corporation and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining. Cameco is the operator. Current production is fourteen million pounds per year of uranium oxide (U308).The mine's location is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca Basin approximately at latitude 57° 11 'north and longitude 105° 34' west. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.The mill was commissioned in 1983. A molybdenum plant was constructed in 1989 in response to increasing molybdenum content in the yellowcake or final product. Early test work had showed that the first ore body to be mined, the Gaertner deposit, would present few problems with regards to molybdenum in the product. However, the test work also showed that the higher molybdenum content of the Deilmann ore, the second Key Lake orebody to be mined, would result in increased molybdenum concentrations. Without the molybdenum plant, penalties would become excessive and some product might not accepted by the refineries.This paper will describe the current Key Lake mill process with emphasis on the molybdenum solvent extraction process. It will cover the chemistry of the process, process development in the mid 1980's, and current operating practices.The Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants, crushing and grinding, leaching -counter current decantation (CCD), solvent extraction, yellowcake/crystallization and bulk neutralization (Figure 1. "The objective of an industrial flotation circuit is to separate valuable minerals from non-valuable minerals utilising differences in their flotation recovery rate. Regrinding and reagent addition are particle modification processes which are employed within these circuits to maximise the flotation selectivity of one mineral with respect to the others present in the ore feeding the process.Batch test nodal analysis, or the ability to compare floatability through mathematical combination of laboratory batch flotation test results, is a powerful technique for assessing the effectiveness of particle modification processes on ore floatability in industrial flotation circuits.In this paper, the use of nodal analysis is demonstrated within an industrial flotation circuit. It is used to show that regrinding and staged reagent addition within Teck Cominco’s Red Dog zinc retreatment circuit is beneficial to pulp flotation selectivity. Optimisation of these processes could potentially improve the zinc recovery within the circuit. Lime addition, which is periodically employed to depress pyrite in the circuit, was found to depress sphalerite in preference to pyrite and to result in poorer metallurgical performance in the circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of an industrial flotation circuit is to separate valuable minerals from non-valuable minerals utilising differences in their flotation recovery rate.Different minerals can only be effectively separated using flotation if they are sufficiently liberated from each other (i.e. do not co-exist within the same particles) and have a sufficient difference in surface hydrophobicity. Size reduction processes and chemical addition are utilised before and within a flotation circuit to achieve sufficient particle liberation and to maximise differences in mineral hydrophobicity. In effect, the objective of these processes is to maximise the flotation selectivity of one mineral with respect to the others present in the ore feeding the process."

Nevsun Resources Ltd. Bisha Mine Project is a gold and base metal development project in the Gash Barka region of west-central Eritrea. The project has the potential to be one of the largest industrial developments in the country, and Eritreans have no experience in modern mining. Nevsun recognized early that the success of the Bisha Project would require meaningful consultation and engagement with all levels of Eritrean society. Meaningful engagement required not only full disclosure, but also capacity building from government officials at all levels to other stakeholders who live in the nearby communities. This paper describes the approach used to develop capacity and to help introduce a modern mining culture in a country without previous experience in mining.

Solid fuel, usually coke or anthracite, is commonly added to ground iron ore fines in the pelletising process to reduce the amount of burner fuel required and the maximum firing temperature, while maintaining pellet strength and the productivity of the pelletising plant. However, the use of coke and coal contribute to the production of greenhouse gases (eg carbon dioxide) and are a source of NOx and SOx emissions. Utilising wood biomass / wood char is one methodology CSIRO Minerals is investigating as an alternative to coke and coal, as it is a renewable energy source that is very reactive, has a low ash content and the potential to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from the iron and steel-making process. Previous work has established that charcoal can effectively replace coke in the sintering process (Lovel et al, 2005), and the following experimental work aims to demonstrate that it can also provide an adequate replacement for coke and coal in the pelletising process. The paper presents the results of an experimental testwork program comparing the behaviour of fired pellets containing traditional solid fuels and charcoal. The physical properties of the pellets are compared in terms of their compressive strength, tumble and abrasion indices and the reduction properties. A qualitative assessment of the pellet microstructures is also presented.

Cameco has studied the concept of underground milling of high-grade uranium ore. Compared to conventional milling on surface, the underground milling scheme appears to offer significant cost savings and a lower environmental impact. "In 1997 when Royal Oak Mines Inc. went into receivership, the mineral processing technicians (mill operators) who had been working at Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for most of their career walked out with no credentials to serve as testimony of their knowledge and skills.As a result of new diamond mining activity and the establishment of socio-economic agreements, mining industry representatives approached the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), Government of the Northwest Territories, in 1999. They requested support and direction to promote training and recognition for mineral processing technicians at BHP’s (BHP Diamonds Inc.) Ekati mine. ECE recommended the development of occupational standards and certification.This paper describes the development process and end products that resulted from this collaborative project between industry, government and education. In addition, industry representatives involved in the project share their views on the development process and the benefits of standards and certification.The conclusion invites industry members to support national occupational standards and certification with their associated benefits: standardized training in the workplace and institutions, proof of competence for hiring, recognition of prior learning, and a nationally and internationally recognized credential.INTRODUCTIONSwiftly changing labour market demands are nothing new in the North. The fur trade and mineral discoveries have brought employment to workers in a feast and famine cycle for decades. In the late 1990s, the Giant, Con, Lupin, Polaris and Nanasivik mines were nearing the end of productive runs. Many experienced workers found that without credentials, they had no proof of their abilities to offer prospective employers."

"Inco Metals Ltd. (Manitoba Division) operates a mining, milling, smelting and refining complex, 500 miles north of Winnipeg in central Manitoba. The Thompson Mill is presently operating at 12,000 S.T.P.D. on ore from both underground and open pit mines. The ore is treated in two separate milling and flotation circuits utilizing a common crushing system which is located inside the main mill building. The milling facility employs approximately 43 operating employees, 30 maintenance employees and 20 staff in supervisory or process development roles.In recent years an increasing awareness of the potential hazards of contaminants in the work place has made it mandatory that all employers maintain careful and accurate records of the work environment to which each employee has been exposed during his working career.The importance of this record keeping and general observation of the work place cannot be over emphasized. Proper monitoring of the work place provides an accurate and complete record of the contaminants and physical agents to which an employee is exposed during his work career. This can aid in studies which might be conducted in the future and can also be used as a basis for instituting improvements to the workplace."

"A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MURRAY BROOK MINERAL DEPOSITDuring the mid-1950's intensive exploration activity in northern New Brunswick followed the discovery of the world class Brunswick base metal deposit. Using the prototypes of modern airborne geophysical and geochemical exploration techniques many mineralized areas in the Bathurst-Newcastle area were quickly identified. This base metal - silver camp is situated within the metavolcanic - metasidementary rocks of the Tetagouche Group which forms a roughly circular caldera-chaped voloanio complex of Ordivician age.One of the early results in the exploration history in the camp was the discovery of the Murray Brook Deposit by Kennco Explorations, (Canada) Limited. During routine ground checking of geophysical anomalies, most of which turned out to be graphitic schist, the discovery of some copper bearing float was made by the exploration team. This encouraged the company sufficiently to carry out a regional stream sampling program which lead to a large anomaly associated with a hematitic gossan. Diamond drilling of a weak Slingram anomaly over the gossan zone resulted in the discovery of massive sulphide lenses. This was followed in 1956-7 with an intensive drilling program. The result was the delineation of a potential ore body containing an estimated 23 million tons with an overall grade of 0.44% copper, 0.86% lead, 1.95% zinc, 25.73 g/tonne (0.91 oz/ton) silver, 0.28 g/tonne (0.01 oz/ton) gold. Within this package were higher grade zones of copper and lead-zinc mineralization approaching ore grades.A thick blanket of gossan was present and is reported to have caused the drillers considerable trouble as they attempted to penetrate it to get to the underlying sulphides. The gossan, consisting of iron oxides and silica fragments sits on top of the massive sulphides and attains a remarkable thickness of 45.5 meters (150'). Early work had suggested that the gossan was enriched in gold and silver. If this were the case and if the precious metal could be leached out with cyanide, then mining and recovering those values might be economic.With this in mind Northumberland Mines Limited optioned the property from Kennco in 1985. Preliminary leach tests indicated that indeed the gold in particular leached readily. Subsequent drilling of the gossan (using triple core barrel technology for better recovery of the easily ground core) indicated 1,536,363 tonnes (1,690,000 tons) with an average grade of 1.05 g/tonne (0.037 oz/ton) gold and 42.13 g/tonne"

"Since milling began in 1912, the Dome mill, now part of the Porcupine Joint Venture (PJV), has been expanded several times, the most recent increasing the milling rate from 3,500 to 11,500 tonnes per day. Dome uses conventional crushing and grinding followed by gravity concentration to recover free milling gold. A cyanidation/CIP process recovers the remaining gold in the gravity tails.Over the past few years, continuous gravity improvements have increased the gravity recovery from 20% to nearly 50% of the plant feed gold. This paper describes some of the factors that have contributed to this dramatic increase, and suggests how gravity recovery can be further improved. Gravity circuit availability has been improved to >98% with the implementation of a preventative maintenance program. More Knelson concentrators have been added to the circuit, and in 2002, an Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was installed to replace the shaking table. In 2003, the entire gravity circuit was audited to evaluate and quantify the circuit performance. The metallurgical and mechanical operating conditions of the gravity circuit are now well understood, and areas for further improvement are well defined.INTRODUCTIONThe Porcupine Joint Venture was formed in 2002 between Placer Dome Inc. and Kinross Gold Corporation. One of the goals of the JV was to use the milling capacity of the Dome mill to process ore from Placer Dome and Kinross mines in the Timmins Camp. The PJV Dome Mill utilizes gravity concentration, cyanide leaching and carbon in pulp gold circuits to recover gold. Gravity recovery has been used in some form at the Dome Mill for most of its existence, first using conventional jigs, these being replaced in 1993 by two Knelson Concentrators, one for each of the two grinding circuits in the Dome mill. Over the years more concentrators have been added to improve the gravity recovery, most recently in 2002 for a current total of five. Also in 2002, an Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was added to process the Knelson concentrate, replacing the shaking table."

Safe underground mine backfilling with hydraulic fill requires efficient fill drainage and stable fill retaining walls or bulkheads. If any or both the above two requirements are not satisfied, such a backfilling operation creates unsafe conditions and may lead to backfill retaining wall failures. Mine backfill retaining wall failures are always associated with economic losses, fatalities and interruption to mine production. Mining industry wants to either reduce or eliminate these fill retaining wall failures. The fill retaining wall failures could be effectively avoided through the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining walls and engineered drainage systems through the retaining walls. This paper presents the experience of the author in developing, implementing, and monitoring several hundred fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining walls at a mine in Australia with the highest safety standard. The details on the mine backfill drainage system and fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining wall designs are also presented.

The emergence of Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) in the Canadian mining sector has been read by many as a positive governance innovation. Negotiated directly between mineral resource developers and Aboriginal communities with limited government interference, IBAs serve to manage impacts associated with a mining project and deliver tangible benefits to local communities. Notwithstanding their increasing use and significance, limited systematic analysis has been undertaken to determine whether they are, in fact, working. This paper reports on the effectiveness of a number of IBAs negotiated in support of three northern Canadian diamond mines, drawing on evidence from time-series data, key informant interviews, and focus group meetings in Yellowknife and Dettah, NWT, and Kugluktuk, NU. While some deficiencies were apparent and perceptions of effectiveness varied somewhat by Aboriginal community, the IBAs were generally found to be meeting their objectives, especially with respect to the delivery of benefits. For Aboriginal communities affected by mineral development in the Canadian North, this represents a significant change to typical outcomes of the past. Moving forward, research on IBA effectiveness needs to adopt a longer timeframe and begin to gauge the degree to which IBAs are able to address long-standing concerns associated with hinterland resource extraction beyond their agreement-specific objectives.
